Home Baseball #3 Oregon State @ #20 Arizona

#3 Oregon State @ #20 Arizona

385

6pm tonight.

Should be a great series. Gut says Boyd wins, Wetlzer loses, and Moore is a wildcard, but not a strong feeling on any of that. So, I am thinking 2-1 best case, but who knows, Beavs have confidence and are playing well. They've also been hearing about their weak schedule, so that could motivate them further.

Stream available at:

pac-12.com/live/arizonawildcats.aspx or http://pac-12.com/live/arizonawildcats2.aspx

Regarding television availability: Oregon State and Arizona got word from the Pac-12 earlier this week that Sunday's game will no longer be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks. The three-game series, however, is slated to be streamed for free via Pac-12.com.

Yay for the Pac-12 Network?

I have to say, the baseball streams are nice and high quality. Love that Mike Parker isn't doing the games (had to throw that in there).

  1. Stoked for this series. Gotta get 2 at least.

Unrelated: Lyle Moevao will be a grad assistant next year, helping out with running backs, which seems odd.

      • He needs to get his foot in the coaching door some how. It’s also good if he does have coaching aspirations to broaden his football knowledge and learn other positions.

      • I think Lyle fits well with Bray and the other newer guys. Has to help further with the mental attitude and aggressiveness of the team.

  2. Arizona’s three starters this weekend, Konner Wade, James Farris and Cody Moffett all have good ERA’s, but are all guys the Beavers can hit. Arizona has the type of ballpark the Beavers hitters should thrive in. They have a lot of line drive, gap to gap hitters and this ballpark has enormous gaps in the outfield. I think the Beavers are going to score their fair share of runs this weekend. I think both offenses will hit well, the bullpens may decide who wins this series and both are good. I think the series is a toss up with it being Tucson, but I think the Beavers find a way to squeak out two wins this weekend.

  3. Don’t like the safety squeeze play there, let Gordon swing away, him hitting into a DP isn’t likely, don’t let Arizona be able to escape the inning

  4. Nice to see Keyes pull a ball with some authority. Slowly starting to see Keyes be the guy we all saw 2 years ago. He’s had good at-bats all season, now starting to hit the ball hard and I like his approach at the plate.

    • As Beavgopher said, the little scoreboard is nice too. However, it would be nice to see some replays as are shown on the Beavs feeds.

  5. Idea for the logo. Create a badge in the shape of a shield. Make the background tartan. Put a Beaver on it. Use the badge small, medium and large in different combos for all sports and blow it up for tee shirts. Cut back on the assorted stripes, two tone facemasks and other gimmicks. I

  6. I’ll take it! Nearly a complete game, pitching and hitting really came through tonight. Defense and base running provided some “teachable moments”.
    GO BEAVS………….6-2 alright!

  7. UNC loses their first, 4-1 to Miami at home. Florida State loses to Maryland, 5-3. UCLA and dawgs suspended due to fog.

  8. Good V! Tomorrow I agree with Angry is a toss up as Wetzler is pitching, hopefully we pull that out and clinch the series.

    • Wetzler’s slow starts are a real concern, coupled with the “pitch count” thing; its a good thing Casey didn’t need to use much bullpen tonight.

BTW, seems like the pitch count for Wetzler should be in the 70’s or so now that he has a couple starts behind him.

Nice to see the bats coming alive tonight, it could take 6 or more to win tomorrow.

    • I like that design. I wish we had a team playing on the court that was worth watching though.

I also like the idea of the tartan print in the endzones of the football field. That would be a cool and unique look as I can’t think of anybody else off the top of my head that uses that on their field.

    • I don’t like it. The black key with the orange semi-circle looks like a giant penis ready to give the Beaver a money shot. Did Nike design this?

    • Not sure the article is actually saying CR is someone they SHOULD look at.
BTW, did you see the qualifications of some of the others on the list? Amaker and Drew, in particular, seem head and shoulders above CR.

      • I agree Jack, but I may take that statement a step further; Faith is avoiding looking for the truth or accepting it if presented because you’re afraid of what you might find.
I know this is digressing from the original statement of CR and NW but you’re statement caught my eye.

        • It does digress. But I only made the statement in the face of the digression itself.

There is no god, and there is no heaven. I have only questioned the thoughts of the poster from there.

  9. Wow, JRod with a bouncing throw to second fails to cut down the stealing runner. 2 out runner at second.
Ground out then ends the 1st, 0-0

    • Big issue the last year+ with Jake is he doesn’t get low enough when blocking pitches. Thus pitches go right between his legs a little too often. Something he’ll have to improve.

  10. Aside from Andy Peterson’s fly ball to left, the Beavers aren’t getting good swings on Farris just yet. Scoreless after 2 1/2 innings

  11. Tyler Smith rarely chases bad pitches and he swung at a pitch way out of the zone. Not like him. 1 down and a runner on for Conforto

    • Yup, and to top it off there don’t seem to be any replays to let ya see what you may have missed the first time around.

  12. DP to end the 4th, hopefully that changes momentum.
Cats pitcher throwing very well, lots of pick off attempts though. Wishful thinking that he tires.

    • Keyes, not really a big threat to steal, takes second. Looked like an accurate throw would have gotten him.
Joey follows with a walk, so runners at 1 and 2 with one out for Peterson.

  13. Walk by Jansen and a couple runners on with 1 out for Peterson. Big at-bat, if Peterson can get this in the gap, could end up being a really big inning

  14. Beavers ground out and runners move up to 2nd and third with 2 outs. Beavers got fortunate there, could have been a DP if 2nd baseman comes up with it cleanly. Big 2 out at-bat from Gordon here

  15. Worst part about the camera angle is it’s hard to tell if the home plate ump misses calls on some pitches, but that last pitch appeared it may have been high.

  16. Gordon makes it easy on Farris, two fouls and looks at a too close strike for the K, so much for the mo. But, I do believe, Farris is beginning to tire……missed a few high and puffing a bit as he headed for the dugout.

  17. Dylan Davis gets aggressive on the bases and forces the catcher to make a perfect throw to get him and he can’t. On third with no outs

  18. Runners on the corners here for Jake Rodriguez. Wouldn’t surprise me to see them send Keyes to keep from hitting into a DP here

  19. Conforto has been spectacular again this season and Dylan Davis has been great as has Tyler Smith, but Kavin Keyes’ performance this year might be my favorite. Swinging it well, has a great approach at the plate, not chasing pitches, he might be running the bases better than anyone, playing great defense. He’s such a smart player and it really shows this season. Nice to see him bounce back this year and play to what he’s capable of.

  20. Andrew Moore getting through 6 would be ideal. Then you can bring in Schultz, Bryant and Engelbrekt and close this one out.

  21. I admit, I don’t watch a ton of baseball, so maybe this is normal and I just don’t realize it, but why the hell was there an official standing in the infield while the Beavs were just pitching? Seems like he’s asking to have his head taken off, or at the very least, interfere with the game.

    • Any truth to the rumor that he went to several Horton camps to learn?

Actually, this year that was just the second HBP for Max.

  22. Hayes a one out walk, we’d all breath easier if he could be brought home.

I’m betting we see two more pitchers for the Beavs, no need to hold back with no mid-week game coming up.

  23. Keyes almost got that one past the ss, still made an infield single. One out, runners at 1 and 2, really would be big to bring in at least one.

With all the throws over to first by the AZ pitchers (both tonight and yesterday) they really haven’t shown anything better than average moves, certainly not what one would call outstanding. Hope I haven’t put the hex on!!

  24. Really bad at-bat from Jake Rodriguez. Last thing OSU needed was a strikeout, got to get that runner in and he didn’t get the job done

  25. Yeskie’s pitching decisions tonight have been a bit odd. Brocker comes in, then Bryant for 2 batters and now Schultz. I don’t see much reason to take out Bryant in this spot, throwing well and he hasn’t thrown many pitches.

      • OK. I just looked it up and it is a rule change this year. “…When a pitcher starts an inning he shall pitch to the first batter until such batter is put out or reaches base unless a pinch hitter is used or the batter or pitcher injures himself.”

Since that was the first batter of the inning Bryant had to finish the at bat.

  26. correction. Scott Schultz not Brandon Jackson. They attempted to bring in Jackson with a 2-0 count to the first hitter but the umpires would not let them. Not sure why.

  27. OT – Some of my tribe made it to the Corvallis Boys/Girls event held by OSU FB today. All players encountered were excellent ambassadors for the Beavs.

  28. If anyone hears Casey comment on the umps decision to not let Schultz come in with two balls on the first batter in the ninth please share the quote/link here. We’d all like an explanation of the ruling.
    Thanks.
    GO BEAVS, bring the brooms!

    • it is a rule change this year. “…When a pitcher starts an inning he shall pitch to the first batter until such batter is put out or reaches base unless a pinch hitter is used or the batter or pitcher injures himself.”

Since that was the first batter of the inning Bryant had to finish the at bat.

  29. Probable Starters: OSU LHP Ben Wetzler (0-0, 2.70) vs. ARIZ LHP Cody Moffett (2-0, 2.00)

    12pm start.

Don’t like this matchup for Wetzler fwiw.

  30. Tyler Smith killed a chance at a big inning by hitting into a DP. With the leadoff man on for Tyler Smith, doesn’t seem like he’s particularly good in those spots. May want to start bunting to put a runner in scoring position for Conforto.

      • They will, but then you got runners on first and second and 1 out for Dylan Davis who has performed extremely well this season. Opens the door for a very big inning if teams decide to pitch around Conforto.

  31. Conforto did hit that home run, was a bit confusing for a second, 1-0 Beavers, had a chance to be an even bigger inning though.

  32. 2-0 Beavers after an inning and a half. Had a man on third with 1 out and probably should have gotten a 2nd run in the 2nd inning. Can’t blow chances like that. Surprised Casey didn’t try to squeeze Casper home.

  33. Joey Matthews doesn’t execute with a man on third and one out in the top of the inning, then throws a ball to third with runners tagging which allows the runner from first to move up to 2nd. Bad baseball.

  34. I know Davis is having a great year and Casey probably doesn’t want to hit lefties b2b, but I would probably prefer Hayes hitting 4th and Davis 5th. Although Hayes flied out there, I just like his approach with men on base more. Dylan is way too aggressive with men on base. He starts swinging at everything and gets himself out. Came through last night but just not sure his approach is best to hit right behind Conforto when Michael gets walked. Hayes has pop, so it’s not like you’re missing the pop if Hayes moves into the cleanup spot

  35. 2-1 Beavers after 3 innings. I hope they have Painton getting warmed up. If Wetzler struggles again in the 4th, I’d pull him and put in Painton.

    • Maybe. You never really know what you will get from him the following inning. One inning he looks like he’s in a good groove, next inning he walks 3 guys

  36. Wetzler steps aside for Childs having pitched around 80 pitches. Being pulled as much for pitch count as for the game situation. IMHO.

  37. Luck o the Beavs, AZ third baseman double clutches and throws away the attempted sac by Gordon. Runners at 2 and 3, Keyes coming up aa PH.

    • What happens when you execute. Teams eventually will make a mistake and the Beavers capitalized and could hang a big number this inning.

  38. JRod just keeps on playing the game. Cuts down the runner with a throw which was not entirely on target. One out none on now for AZ.

  39. Conforto fails to pick up the ball 2 different times, if he picks it up cleanly and the runner tries to go to third he’s probably out.

  40. That may be the first triple given up by the Beavs this year. Conforto had trouble picking up the ball, otherwise it would have been very close at third.

EDIT: turns out that was the third triple given up this season.

  41. Looked Max was getting squeezed, forced him into a 3-1 count and had to throw one over the plate and it’s an RBI single. 7-4

  42. Really the first time all year the bullpen has struggled with their command like they have today. Probably got to get Schultz in there to put this game away.

  43. Rlley Moore is really due, but after several foul balls finally flies out, 2 down with runners on 1 and 3, need to get out of this inning with at least a 3 run lead.

  44. Allright, Schultz gets a 5-3 third out, on to the ninth.
3 outs to go and (for now) a 4 run lead, I like the Beavs chances.

    • No kidding. In fact, I’m glad it’s baseball season in 2013 and not in 2002… where we would all be whining about how shitty a coach Casey is and how piss poor Barnhart must be as an AD to allow such a pathetic coaching performance.

    • UNC and Vandy won their series with Vandy sweeping. The Beavers should stay #3 in Baseball America’s rankings. I think they’ll be #1 at some point this season though.

      • Really? Seems they should jump to #2 in that case. In BA, Vandy should jump to #1. Beavs should jump NC since NC lost a game and Beavs swept a ranked team on the road. I’m thinking Vandy, Beavs, NC.

Not sure how USA Today will play out. They should jump at least 1 spot, but those SEC schools get leeway.

          • FSU and the Gators rarely play nonconference games outside of the state of Florida. They pad wins early in the season and do alright in conference play. Allows them to be able play regionals and super regionals at home. ACC and SEC have been doing that for years and have no reason to really change that.

  45. Kendall Rogers coming to Corvallis for the ASU series per twitter:

Absolutely can’t wait to see #OSU next weekend up in Corvallis. That club is playing an excellent brand of baseball right now. #Pac12

  46. And:

    Aaron Fitt ?@aaronfitt
Now that is loud. RT @d1baseball: No. 4 Oregon State defeats No. 21 Arizona 8-4, sweeps series

  47. Great game by Jake. The bullpen showed they are human, giving up a few runs. The defense is still a slight concern, but they do make their share of plays some don’t make. The pitching is very deep, what a luxury to decide between Engelberkt, Brocker, and Bryant. What I like the most is a quiet confidence and business like approach the team has. Very focused. Can’t wait for next weekend!

  49. Try this again

3-0 weekend + In n Out + Culver’s cheese curds + getting to see my family soon = WINNING! pic.twitter.com/4yZpotcMNV

      • Yes that to. The time of three and four year college players who are now in the NBA hall of fame.
Quality of the play was much better.

        • I actually did cry watching that last night at the part where Valvano gave his last public appearance at NC St at the 10th anniversary of the title team. Glad to see that the Jimmy V Foundation has been so successful!!

  50. I don’t care about rankings right now. It’s standings season.

3-0 with a sweep of the national champs at their house is a decent start.

  51. A bird in the tree is worth soup in the pot… on Tuesday.

Baghdad Schiff predicts the American now.

    World to end at 8.

    News at 11.

  52. The excitement continues to build here at Casa de Bonehead. Will we make it into the CBI??? Being on the bubble is too much to take! The phone is ringing off the hook with old friends asking me to use my connection to score them the easy to get tickets.

Just think of how good it would be for the program to play in the post-season; extra practice time, enhanced reputation for recruiting and maybe even a shiny CBI Championship trophy! Just imagine where we would be in five years!

OH wait….we bought up all that crap back in 2009 and look what happened. Never mind. Batter up. JB

  53. I think we keep #2 in the CBN and move up to #3 in the Coaches’ poll with LSU’s loss. We go from 1/1 in the RPI/NPI indeces to 5/1 this week while Vandy goes from 8/8 to 1/4.

    Totally worthless fantasy extrapolation:
If we continue to win 15 then drop one, then we lose the first game in the Utah series, the last game against Stanford, and the second game in the final series of the CWS… for a national title and a 61-4 record. It all depends on if and when the UP game is rescheduled. We might lose to them on April 10 then the Saturday game against Stanford and the first in the CWS finals for a 62-4 record.

I think I’d take the second fantasy first.

    • I think Parker is losing it. Listening to some of the BB casts, sounded like he was expecting us to blow it in the second half of games. Yes, we usually do, but he should try to be positive …. at least try.

      • Then there is Jay Reese, did you hear him getting upset over the slow pace of the AZ pitcher? Thought he might have a stroke!

I still contend Jay does an OK job, working solo and still able to share a few insights. Misspeaks some game facts occasionally but eventually gets it right.

One thing I believe we all agree, Jim Wilson makes listening to either Parker or Jay a lot easier!

        • Jay is much improved but it still bugs me when, “the pitch to Smith… inside…. strike one!” Is it too much to add “corner”?

    • Riley’s version of the no huddle and hurry up aren’t the same as everyone elses. Hurry up to him means normal game speed. Just like when he tried to have Katz run the option it looked off.

      • Riley no huddle features players hustling to the line of scrimmage, only to stand there until there are 5 or less seconds left on the shot clock. Might as well spend that time in the huddle rather than standing there giving the D time to read your formation. Its no huddle but not hurry up.

  54. Still waiting on the coaches’ poll, but we remain at #2 in the CBN with the same 494 points. Only UNC changes points from last week in the top five, losing one to drop them to 496. Only MissSt and ASU are dropping while remaining in the top 25.
    http://warrennolan.com/baseball/2013/polls/week/6

Does Conforto pull in honors for Pac POW? He was 8 for 19 with 5 runs, 4 RBI and 2 HR. Rodriguez at Cal was 5 for 19 with 3 runs, 9 RBI, and 2 HR. And Wazzu vs. ASU put up some large numbers, though they seemed to be spread out over several players for the week.

    • They had a coach who couldn’t get them to the NCAA’s. Why would they want another one.
Carmody was not a bad coach.

    • No CR mentions at sippinonpurple.com
Maybe the source is the same one that had Riley interviewing with Wisconsin. Let’s start tracking any jets from Chicago to Corvallis.

    • LOL … I think CR gets another year. But when the Oregonian is calling him on the carpet there must be rumblings. Maybe Obama will find him a cabinet post. Sec of defense, lol.

      • I’m sure there’s definite rumblings. There has to be when my basketball adverse wife asks “is he going to get fired?”. Me: “He’ll be around next year, but they’ll have to make the tourney, or he’s gone”. Her: “then maybe he should hire some new assistants”. It has to be at full saturation if my wife is saying this.

  55. Ok, Jack etal ….. whats the prognosis for the Pac teams in the NCAA tourney??

None seeded higher than 5 or 6 I think. No respect, but conf seems weak this year. Any likely to fare well? Or just do a quick farewell?

  56. Nikegon kinda got screwed. They match up decently against oSu, but only on the frontcourt. Artis and Loyd are going to have their hands full with Smart. And none of it matters because St. Louis will smoosh whichever team wins. StL is just really talented and on a “win one for the Gipper” kind of tear. And they are big and fast and tough as nails.

UCLA can go to the Final Four or lose their first game. My guess is that Billy Donovan puts Howland out of his misery… yet again… and for the final time as the Bruins’ coach.

Cal has the talent to go to the Sweet 16 against faltering UNLV and Cuse. And they could be world beaters by knocking off Indy. But it’s Monty in the post-season. UNLV rolls unless Monty has a couple seven foot twins hiding under his bench.

Zona could also go far if they could play as a team. But they’re sucking big enough to lose to Belmont. Again, it doesn’t matter. UNM will kill either team in the round of 32 then roll them for loose change.

CU is the intriguing one. They match up well with everyone in their sub-bracket… even Miami. I personally don’t think they make it past the first weekend. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see them playing in the regional final either.

I’m gonna say everyone but Cal wins their first game, then maybe UCLA or CU go to 16, with CU being a Cinderella in that scenario.

  57. P12 network adds 8 Beaver baseball games:

Beaver Baseball ?@Beaver_Baseball 27m The following games are scheduled: Sun vs. ASU, April 9 vs. Oregon, May 4 vs. Cal, May 18 vs. Oregon, May 19 vs. Oregon and May 24-26 vs WSU

      • All are still available via live stream. I think they added the games because they see how many people are watching the live streams. A nice way to gauge the market and then adjust.

This P12 network has been great for me. Sucks to be satellite subscriber.

        • No, they are not. All games on the Pac-12 Network are only available online for people whose cable provider has Pac-12 Network, for the rest of us no video.

          • There’s a hypothesis about town which states that the Pac 12 sucked in NCAA seeding because everyone on the selection committee had DirecTv.

  58. Just noticed, ASU appears to be in a dogfight with Texas Tech. T9 and just broke out of a tie, now ASU ahead 7-6. Note: ASU has committed 3 errors in 8 innings.
Looking forward to an exciting weekend at Goss.

  59. @aaronfitt 39s
Arizona State closer Ryan Burr walks four and hits a batter; walk-off walk gives Texas Tech an 8-7 win. Seesaw ballgame.

ouch, that is going to sting.

    • I’m of two minds on this result. An ASU win would, in a small way, bolster the image of the PAC12, OTOH, this kind of a loss is likely to impact the mental state and team chemistry of ASU.

Right now anything that works in the Beavs favor is fine with me and if they can keep things going the stature of the PAC12 won’t be much of a factor late in the season.
      GO BEAVS!….one at a time!

      • 2-3 in their last 5 but one of those wins was against New Mexico and ASU was very lucky to win. If the Beavers jump on them early in game 1 on Friday night, things could turn bad for ASU fast in the series. Facing a confident Beavers team when ASU is struggling with their confidence is a recipe for disaster. I wouldn’t expect this Beavers team to lose any focus, they seem pretty determined and focused and have been that way all season.

  60. Joe Lopez transfers to PSU. Thoughts? He was on the two-deep last year, and I would think we would want all the depth we can get at DT, JC guys notwithstanding.

    • I think this is more of an indication that the JC guys will qualify and be here. 5 DTs on the roster with 2 JCs coming in for spring. Plus one more in the fall puts DTs at 8 guys. More than enough.

Lopez didn’t do much so his loss won’t be anything really.

Besides, it’s a numbers game as well. Kirkpatrick listed 70 players on scholarship. I’m not sure if Lopez was a scholarship guy, I don’t remember him being one. With 4 guys already enrolled (Harlow, Nelson, Delva and Hautau). They have room for 15 more. Signed 25 minus the 4 already in, leaves 19 guys for 15 spots.

Curious to see who else will leave or hopefully, some guys will just greyshirt. Mattison is a good candidate for that and I think Hungala is a question mark too.

      • Question for the more knowledgable: do grey shirts still get things like school and living expenses paid for in order to keep them on campus? Mattison does seem like a likely grey shirt candidate but given his personal life story it sounds like he wants to get to Corvallis as soon as he can.

        • Once they enroll full time, they become full scholarship players. I believe that if they come early, they have to pay their own way and cannot take more than 12 credits. Otherwise their athletic clocks start and he’ll have basically wasted a year.
