This might get lost in the General Discussion, so I’m reposting here.
Hey Folks,
Full Disclosure – I am Will’s dad…
-He has 5 to play 4, long story – AF Prep is like 5th year of High School. Navarro was “safety valve” Left Air Force Prep (just not his thing) after 2013 Signing Day so scramble to find opportunity
-2012 Austin, TX Bowie H.S. Grad, Played mostly DE in H.S. (WR/TE Fresh/Soph. years) at about 225 – Offers from SMU, Wyoming, Colorado State, Texas State, Air Force, 3* DE on Rivals/Scout
-Currently 6’7″/255/4.8/4.35 shuttle
-Coach Riley wants him as TE, though mentioned DE as well.
-2013 Preferred walk-ons at Texas, Kansas State, UTSA
-Love at first sight on official visit (June 5-7) to OSU – Corvallis, school, campus, the program and especially the coaches – Riley, Cav, Beck…
-Official visit to Oregon June 12-14, liked it but was waiting to hear on 2013 scholarship (after NCAA ruling), when he decided he wanted OSU regardless – it “felt like home”
-In Corvallis and in Bridge program now.
-Video links:Link to some speed, footwork, position drills etc. and some game film showing off-the-ground movement taken about 1 month ago (He’s at 256 right now):
link 1Here is a link to his offensive highlights from last season at AF Prep – Fall 2012 (playing RT – OUT OF POSITION and at about 240):
link2Here is a link to Will’s Defensive highlights from High School – Fall 2011 (he was playing at about 225-230 then):
link3And video working out at TE at Baylor, Oklahoma State and Kansas State Summer of 2011 (he was about 225 then).

“wanted OSU regardless”
Great to hear. When’s the last time an out of state kid chose us over Oregon? Sounds like another solid kid who I’ll gladly cheer for as a Beav.
By the way- still in labor here. Women can’t get enough credit for the pain they go through. this has been pretty epic and still going. luckily she’s able to get some rest right now.
I hear you there. My wife went through 12 hours of back labor trying to do the natural/no epidermal thing which included vomiting because of the pain. Was relatively smooth sailing the final 6 hours after the shots to get my sons massive dome pushed out. Child birth is no joke. Good luck and best wishes to healthy baby and momma after it’s all said and done.
“epidural”, whoops
How long does it take the ladies to recover fully?
The word ‘episiotomy’ sends shivers through the spine of any pregnant woman, and their husbands. Google image it, I dare ya.
No kidding, its been bad enough already and we havent even gotten to the stages that cause trauma down there. I heard in a class that sometimes the episiotomy is chosen as a way to prevent tearing in the other direction, like “upwards”.
To answer angrys question, ive been told it takes 4-6 months to really recover, bit that doesnt mean things go back to how they were. I couldnt imagine getting my junk mangled and never being able to really recognize it again…lol…
Apologies to Will’s dad for getting off topic. You’re kid will be a nice player for the Beavs. Congrats!
Ugh.
I want to ask you guys an obvious question but it’s so inappropriate. Maybe over a beer one day. Or if you can imagine what it is, just answer yes or no.
Not sure if I’m thinking what you’re thinking, but “yes”
I think you’re thinking what I’m thinking…
Don’t forget to ask the Doc for a few extra stitches.
Thanks, GWH.
So…no kid…ever.
Good to know.
The Original AngryBeaver
I feel bad for Hopkin’s dad. His first post on AB and he has to read our degenerate jokes.
I’m sure Hopkins dad can relate. Will is a pretty big kid.
The ol perineal tear
Good luck you y’all — glad I am a guy. Glad women get a lot of help nowdays. Cant imagine the old days when it was just midwives and natural birthing. Some women wouldnt live thru it. Damn….
Great info, thanks Angry!
No problem.
I agree with Riley this guy projects best at TE.
Looks like a solid late pickup.
Hurray!! We just beat Texas St, Wyoming, Colorado St. and Air Force for this kid!! Looks like a stellar recruiting class coming in!
Now, now, BB … give the kid some slack. UO invited him, too … and you know they are the SEC of our north div…..lol.
Thanks, dad, for the links and info!
I know I’ll probably kick myself for lowering myself, but…
Ok, so much for the gauzy dream sequence where everybody connected with OSU was nice, civil and scored higher than 300 on the reading comprehension part of the SATs…
As I thought I explained, the schools you mention were 2012 offers. He chose Air Force early on and the offers pretty much stopped. He was being recruited pretty hard by Stanford (applied, Official visit, etc.) til pretty late, but it died when Jason Tarver left. Of course, ALL of these offers went away after signing day 2012 so these schools were no longer in play.
This year, after leaving Air Force Prep AFTER 2013 signing day, it was pretty much down to preferred walk-ons leading to January 2014 scholarships. Good thing he was an academic qualifier, with good enough grades and scores to pretty much go anywhere he wanted. Amongst THESE choices, OSU was in pretty good company – Texas, Kansas State, Oregon – and those were the ones he actually had Official visits to. There were a bunch more to come – until he decided OSU was where he wanted to be.
And, I thought I mentioned it, but he actually, really did chose OSU over Oregon. Seriously. Now, c’mon, can you put on a little bit of a happy face? I figured that would make a Beaver Believer happy… Of course, that would assume you really are a Beaver Believer and not a Duck Lover… OR manic depressive… Or both…
Of course, you can just decide to discount everything I say because I am his dad, but that’s too easy.
My sincere hope is that he is good enough to turn you into a TRUE BEAVER BELIEVER…
Have a nice day!
He’s not a Beaver Believer. He’s a Beaver Beliver. So he’s acting appropriately.
Hang in there, with the new one. Hope it picks up and everyone is healthy at the end. JB
Thanks for the good thoughts. My baby Beavlette was born last night after 40 hours of labor. (not an exageration). i had courtside seats and got a little hands on. Amazing experience and this cute little kid makes any of the above topics worth it. Got to avoid any scissors too ;)
Congratulations!
Good deal…congrats. OSU class of 2035? JB
Congrats! Hope you’ve been sleeping well and taking in as many happy hours as possible, as its all sure to go away. In all seriousness having a kid was the best thing ever for me. Gives you a real reason to be excited to rush home from work. Cheers
Congrats on the new baby.
Since were among friends here, I’ll share a proven method for continuing to get a full nights sleep. Prior to bringing the little one home place a large phone book, Sears catalog (dating myself), or other big book in the nursery. The first time the little one cries in the night just let Mom know that you’ll handle everything while she gets her rest. Then, as the baby continues to cry, walk into the nursery and drop the heavy book on the floor. Immediately tell your wife that everything is under control, no problem.
Experience shows that this will be your last time to get up when the new little girl cries!
Excellent insight from an experienced father; made me chuckle.
Dont worry about it, dad. This is ANGRY BEAVS … where we commonly get up on the wrong side of the bed, kick the dog, beat the wife, curse at the neighbors, …and deliberately misinterpret things said.
….and that LIVER spelling of believer always makes me want a drink…..
Don’t mind Mr. Beliver. He/she is manic and switches between extreme positivity and negativity relatively often. It’s a site called Angry Beavers so it’s a very cantankerous bunch at times. If Will is having a rough game at some point, avoid the site for a week or 2. Thanks for the info. The bulk of us appreciate it, and look forward to watching your son on Saturdays hopefully sometime soon.
Thanks for the clarification. My take is, he wants to be here, he is serious about his football career, he’s a gamer. This is a good get in my opinion and I welcome his family getting involved with fans. I would prefer him at DE simply because I think he would have a bigger impact than at TE.
I must have received this by mistake. For what its worth. JB
“This is Will’s mom. I don’t want him playing such a rough game. I am afraid he will waste all of the money we spent straightening his teeth. He needs to stay home, go to the local community college and marry a local girl. His dad and I argue constantly about this football stuff.”
Hey folks, glad to be here. I’ll try to keep the comments to a minimum and if Will has a bad game, he’s his mother’s child, not mine… Don’t blame me.
PS: More from Will’s mom. “If he has a bad game don’t blame me. I don’t even want him to be playing.”
If your son has a bad game you will get an obscure reference from JB comparing the situation to something that happened during the ’94 season.
If Will had a bad day and still managed to catch three balls he would be the third leading receiver on that ’94 team… for the whole season.
I guess it’s all relative.
I wonder if “Pankey’s Mom” really was Pankey’s Mom…
Why do I somehow think Will’s dad was the guy videotaping, keeping score and badgering the coaches and umpire at every Little League game? JB
Yeah and now his kid is on full scholarship at a D1 school.
I’d call that a job well done.
I couldn’t agree more.
Problem….His D1 scholarship is at OUR school. Look, if this kid was some sort of phenom, then he would have a list of Pac-12 offers. Am I supposed to be really excited about beating out Wyoming for a recruit that has no other offers? He does not and I am therefore very skeptical.
Well, the proof is what happens on the field, so skepticism is fine. Hell, after those two losing seasons, I am still skeptical about Mike Riley.
But quit whining about the lack of other offers. That was explained. Some walkons, who werent even offered a scholy by OUR school, have performed very well.
“Look, if this kid was some sort of phenom, then he would have a list of Pac-12 offers.”
Like Jacquizz Rodgers and Jordan Poyer, right?
They could have been recruiting him at the wrong position. He has a great body for a TE (I don’t know if he can catch well and consistently). I don’t think this guy is a game changer, but he looks a notch above the the Colby Prince and Howard Croom types who always seem to find the roster and get playing time.
Offer sheets on scout/rivals aren’t always accurate, btw.
He’s a 6′ 7″ 3 star recruit.
Are you fuckin retarded?
That was for beaver bekidney btw.
I believe nothing and trust even less when it comes to the internet.
You’re lying.
How can we believe you?
OSU’s offense has yet to decide a key decision for 2013. Who will win the ‘X’ Receiver position and be the primary counter threat to Brandin Cooks? Early reports are that it is between Obum Gwacham and Richard Mullaney. Which of these players can OSU most rely on to fill a huge whole and try to produce another dynamic duo now that Wheaton is gone to the Steelers? Is one of these 2 players even the 2nd best receiver on the team?
X Receiver: Mullaney or Gwacham?
http://beaverbyte.com
Mullaney.
Gwacham has potential but that’s it…he’s too unreliable.
If Obum gets the job, I would have another player follow him a yard behind the pattern to catch the ricochet off of his hands. I think it would confuse the defenses.
Right now it has to be Mullaney, both he and Obum got pretty even PT next year and Mullaney was much more impressive. I still think Obum needs to get series during the game, he has too much potential to have him sit on the bench.
Plus he might drop the bench.
Now THAT’S funny……
Mullaney for sure. Kids got some Hass in him (a lot of Hass). I see boom as a 3rd down, redzone, specialty package guy. Unless one of the new kids comes in and wows, it’s got to be Mullaney.
I wouldn’t let Obum on the field for third downs unless his catching passes improve. Red Zone, put him in there.
Yeah I’d only play him on 3rd downs in a blowout.
He could be the Mike Tolbert of Wide Receivers. Let Mullaney do all the work to get the team to the red zone, then Obum can vulture the touchdowns.
He would still have to CATCH the ball.
When I have gone to practices, mostly last season, he was nearly unstoppable in jump ball situations. But once they moved into non-red-zone situations, he struggled with lining up correctly, running the right route, and catching passes. He is still definitely a threat in jump ball situations.
Mullaney it is! Anyone hear how the shoulder is doing. That would be the only thing holding him back.
http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2013/07/report_oregon_ducks_football_r.html
Been on campus less than a week.
Slapping a woman? Perfect Duck recruit.
More from “Will’s Dad” Good morning AngryBeavs…
“This morning Will ran five miles in under 35 minutes, I followed in the jeep. Then a two hour weight lifting session with me spotting and encouraging. Next I served him a macro-biotic breakfast while he watched game film and meditated. The kid is so dedicated it’s unbelievable! I can’t wait until we ….err he gets to Corvallis.”
Don’t be a hater, Petty Boner.
With a kid who’s played various sports over the years, I’ve seen the dad you describe, but I’m not sure why you imagine this guy to be him.
Is he proud of his son and his son’s accomplishes, of course. If you could reproduce I’m sure you’d be beyond proud if he could see straight without intervention.
I’m curious, do you welcome people to your house in the same impolite manner?
Making a wise remark is your way, but really feel free to get off his ass anytime.
I thought this was a site to look at OSU athletics with a critical eye. Is this the type of recruit that will get us to the National title? Will has no Pac-12 offers…..Just sayin’. Visits and scholarship offers are very different. Why are we getting amped up about this kid? No offense to Will’s dad, but I am not sure this kid belongs in the Pac-12.
Did you fail to read the details that his dad provided? I believe this site has more value than complaining about Mike Riley and his staff. To me it seems to get more unfiltered insider information on occasion as compared to other sources, then the rest of the content is filler of people like you spouting off about how the program doesn’t meet your expectations.
Sounds to me like this kid committed early resulting in interest and offers dropping off. When he became available again his options were somewhat limited but even with that going against him he had interest from Oregon State, Texas and Oregon. Visits and Scholarship offers are different, but if you’re invited for a visit, I would think your chances of having an offer follow are rather high.
Also, he sounds like a smart kid. Should represent Oregon State well even if he doesn’t turn into a star player.
I’ll bet all my pennies that he’s at least better than Blake Harrah.
You are a real gambler LOL.
You’re not sure he belongs in the Pac because you don’t really know much about him. You’re just looking at who offered him, and that’s it.
Exactly, and if this kid was a true talent at the PAC-12 level he would have a shitload of scholarship offers. Did you see how many other schools were “interested”? None of them offered. KState did not recognize his “talent”.
How long have you been a Beav fan? 6 months? How many on the roster had a shitload of offers?
C’mon guys, lets call this what it is. This kids a project, that’s what all these “prefferred” walk-on offers tell you. The big name teams think he could be good at some point but aren’t willing to bet $30,000 a year on it. I trust offers more than star ratings because the guys who do the best scouting on these players are the ones that end up extending the offers or not. Scout and Rivals may say 3 stars but his offers say 1 and 2 stars.
Sure this kid isn’t bad by any means and he surely could turn out to be a solid D-1 player, but let’s not praise him and defend him like he’s some sort of blue-chipper just because his dad patrols the site.
….like he’s some blue chipper?? The best thing said was “…looks like a solid late season get” Or….”better than Blake Harrah”… I dont see any “praise”
What are you reading? …or smoking?
At this point, Will and his dad have enough material for 2 bulletin boards to post inside his locker door. He can highlight those that are most critical (without any real basis) and use them for inspiration.
And unlike most ducks, he can actually read the bulletin board………without a tutor.
The funny thing is that if Riley would have pulled in his typical 0 star project all you asswipes would be crying about needing legit 3 stars on the roster.
Nobody said he was Rob Gronkowski jr. But scout and rivals ranked him at 3 stars and he got genuine interest and official visits to legit programs.
He would have been the shining star of the recruiting class 6 years ago :).
So what’s the deal here? I thought the initial reports were that Hopkins chose to be a walk-on at OSU with a guaranteed ship once calendar 2014 begins. This was in the face of doing the same at UT, KSU, UO and others.
Is that not the case now? I would understand if an immediate ship was offered in order to entice him. The only reason he wasn’t getting “normal” interest was because he was offering his services way too late in the recruiting cycle. Programs have saturated ship limits, official visits, recruiting evaluations, etc. until July 31. Then all those numbers are reset for the new recruiting cycle. He could have gone JUCO for one year then played the same recruiting game for the 2014 cycle, leaving him with 3 to play 4, like one Aaron Rodgers did.
But then Rodgers wasn’t a Pac player. He wasn’t offered by anyone.
Oh well.
OT (or on?)…
I haven’t seen anyone comment on this yet.
http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30800&ATCLID=208615360
I like it. Number one on my “like” list is that when you go to the “SPORTS” drop down it lists the Men’s and Women’s sports as just sports. It really bothered me that I would drop down the list on the old site and they would qualify soccer and basketball as “men’s” or “women’s” under already listed “men’s” and “women’s” sports. That spoke to either the effort put into the site or the stupidity of the reader its publishers thought existed.
In other news:
http://blog.pac-12.com/pac-12-globalization-initiative-china/
We talked about this a lot a couple years ago. Now it seems to be a priority.
ASU’s slogan for this summer in China: “We’re not Georgetown!”
Scott can’t get on DirecTV, but he wants to go to goddamn China!
That’s DTV’s deal. They won’t do the same deal everyone else out there did for Pac footprint access.
How about a footprint in the rest of the USA?
It starts with the regional buy. DTV isn’t even willing to buy the same deal every other provider has bought. You see Comcast screw with the national access. DTV could do the same if they wanted.
I know this has been a lock to a couple of you who are in the know. But it’s increasingly sounding more and more public and sure that Wetzler will be back next year.
Schultz makes it official. He’ll be back next year.
Great news. Wetzler coming back would be huge.
Ten minutes until the signing deadline for MLB, and no Wetzler news. Phillies fansites speculate that Wetzler is staying because they oversigned a HS P outside the 10th round an hour or so ago.
It’s official. Wetzler returning.
While GFR was denied a fourth consecutive win in Michigan on a technicality earlier this year, it looks like we have another race team doing great things in the engineering school.
http://www.earthtechling.com/2013/07/oregon-college-solar-car-drives-661-miles-on-clean-energy/
OT… this is a very big deal. It’s also pretty awesome.
http://cdss.library.oregonstate.edu/open-access
That’s really cool.
It is a VERY BIG deal!
That’s what she said!
OSU was already #7 among US institutions on Webometrics. And that was with a partial OA policy. This just ups the game.
That’s what he said.
Wetzler and Schultz back officially! Loaded pitching staff, Omaha bound!
That’s awesome.
Wow that’s huge!
That’s what beavergopher said.
+1
Very good news, I especially liked this from Lindsay’s report, “Asked if the Beavers were setting themselves up to have a better staff in 2014 than they did in 2013, Wetzler laughed.
“It’s possible,” he said. “But we’ve got to start putting in the work right now.””
Off season work last year helped individual players and, I’m certain, was a factor in the team chemistry which was so important. That said, there are still holes to fill at SS and C before talk of Omaha in 2014 is justified.
OT, I just found out something very interesting regarding the OSU rebranding. I realize I’m just chumming the waters here, but it’s too good not to share….
A college friend of mine is the Nike graphic designer who was in charge of the OSU rebranding effort. While the effort was ongoing he wouldn’t talk much about it, but I ran into him yesterday and he gave me a lot more info.
The current logo was not his – or Nike’s – top pick. What was the logo that he was pushing, you might ask?
……drum roll…….
Retro Benny. Tweaked a little- cleaned up and modernized slightly – but Retro Benny.
BDC was staunchly against it- wouldn’t even consider it. My friend said he pushed it hard but eventually had to give up. So, they went back to the drawing board…anyway, now you know!
:(
I have a great vintage benny t-shirt. I only wear it special occasions because once it’s done it’s done.
That’s (really+sad)³
What is really sad is that you ate 4 Doritos Locos Tacos last night. You are killing me down here!!
I had one of those when they first came out. They are completely not worth it. In fact, TB isn’t really worth “it” any more. The only store I will visit is the one by Gresham HS. And that’s because they have my order ready before I order it. I haven’t been that way in a while, but that TB, White’s and Joe’s are three reasons to wander up toward Hood.
Thanks for writing JP. We haven’t had any child molesters give their perspective here for a while.
T-Bell has gone downhill the last couple years. They changed their refried beans from sort of acceptable to bland and kinda nasty.
They served me wet, slimy lettuce last time I went. This was probably a year ago. I wrote them to complain and never heard back, so I never went back.
I assume all these places changing their menu to lower grade ingredients is just another hidden inflation. We’ll see Starbucks lower their been quality, etc. The new company who purchased Twinkies announced today those are going to be smaller. I see it everywhere and more than in the past. Yet we’re told inflation is under 2% lol.
At this point my lady and I cook every meal ourselves. You can’t trust any prepared food. Not sure we ever left (Lewis’s) The Jungle, but if we did, we’re back in it.
I am surprised you eat Taco Bell …ever. You strike me as someone who would avoid that stuff.
Their bean burritos used to be good, cheap and fast. Now they’re expensive and tasteless. Everything else on their menu can be got by buying two cans of somesuch and either chips or tortillas.
The old mantra was “when a restaurant starts changing their menu, that’s a sign that they’re going under.” Fast food is no different. Staid staples are staid for a reason. When you try too hard to diversify, you run into unreasonable costs which affect your staid products.
You talk of hidden inflation as if it hasn’t always happened. But you talk very little about hidden taxes. They are much more important and affect us all in a much more profound way than the shrinking size of a candy bar.
You (a general “you”) complains about paying taxes for kids to go to school when you doesn’t have any kids. You runs business, and also complains about kids not having the general skills required to work in your business. You is an idiot who abides by only short term greed, yet you understands the long term because labor is a diminishing capital. You is responsible for his or her own demise.
But now we’re talking small K versus big K… laissez faire versus something not completely stupid and shortsighted.
No, I know it’s always happened. That’s why I wrote “I see it everywhere and more than in the past.” My family grew up poor, so we were always looking at prices and trends (including shrinking package sizes).
I don’t do any of the stuff in the “You” paragraph. I try to protect my past earnings from future theft via inflation. Otherwise I worked for a low wage like $8 or $2 an hour when all is said and done, depending when I finally spend those earnings. That’s all I care about. End of story. But the “yous” on the other side (since apparently I am a Republican?) tug at heart strings by mentioning kids, education, etc. Then view those kids as a job (see Chicago teachers union asking for non-stop raises), an economic asset (see student loan bubble), etc. Liberal message is getting old—all just appeals to emotion, pointing out what everyone does wrong, making people feel bad for human instincts, and constant heart-string-tugging. When it’s time to live up to what they preach they don’t do it, and then say “if only those dumb, heartless Republicans would get out of our way”…
Politics. Sigh.
You missed. The most liberal message out there is laissez faire. When talking to me, you may as well call it anarchy, it’s so useless.
And when talking about teachers and the worst there is, you need to start with South Carolina. They have the lowest rate of turnover in the nation, and they completely suck at providing the service teachers traditionally supply (though they aren’t as bad as Alabama, Mississippi or Texas… so they have some non-work to do). Go ahead and list all the unions who run those states. Then tell me how the unions make teacher pay unreasonable… without ever mentioning administrative costs. Then list the technological advances born in those regions due to their strong educational bases. Huntsville and Oak Ridge do not count because… well… they’re government.
I’ll wait.
Anyone who complains about government in general should never NEVER EVER celebrate the 4th of July. That makes one an immediate hypocrite. People want this or that without paying for it, but they are paying through their noses without even realizing it. You have to worry about where you live anymore lest your kids have to hire an Erin Brockovich to just kinda complain about your tortuous and early demise. Did you know that it’s illegal to photograph CAFO’s… from public lands?
Oil and gas have made a joke of the Clean Water and Clean Air acts. It’s a good thing nobody else is exempt.
Oh… wait.
I suspect you haven’t done it, but think about morons who buy bottled water. It’s as if we don’t have faucets in our own homes anymore. Why the hell would I spend even one penny to buy bottled tap water from Arkansas when I can just walk over to my sink? A nation who does this deserves to spend 10% more for 10% less. The country probably needs to be reset so those things which actually have value are actually valued.
Dude, you are killing me down here! Remember the itching, burning and bleeding? They are called hemorrhoids and they are caused by sitting on your ass for hours on end. Please, for both our sakes keep your posts brief and step away from the computer every now and then. Also, while I have your attention, mix in a salad. Four Big Macs! If I see any more sesame seeds pass through here there will be hell to pay!
Thanks JP. I’ll take it under advisement.
I’m still giggling that someone wants to take the time to pretend to be my butt. Anyone else out there want to volunteer for this historically Blitz job?
“When it’s time to live up to what they preach they don’t do it,”
No shit. Every study I’ve heard of shows (insert groups not in the Lib camp, eg: Conservatives, Christians, even Repubs) donate a higher percentage of their income and time to charitable groups such as Salvation Army, USO, even (ugh) United Way and Red Cross.
Politics. Sigh. Indeed.
Show one.
I’m surprised. Only a negative rating? Not even a link to some weird made up site?
I mean… I know you know you were blatantly lying about charitable giving. I just wanted to know if you had some magical poll of two people with a plus/minus of 200% error.
Why would you even pretend to fly some lie like that around here? Do you think nobody here has a computer?
That was a serious question.
Why would you so blatantly lie?
Oh key dough key.
Liars are as liars do.
Just one… not every… just one.
One article and one book:
http://philanthropy.com/article/The-Politics-of-Giving/133609
“Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism”, by Arthur Brooks.
Jack, your accusation of “blatantly lying” when you have no way of knowing what studies I’d ever seen is, at best, intellectually dishonest. Perhaps you should have said, “not conversant with current studies”? And then posted an appropriate link.
I do see that there is a recent study which indicates that Libs and Conservatives give equally: http://philanthropy.com/blogs/prospecting/conservatives-and-liberals-are-equally-generous-study-finds/35812
You’ve expanded my horizons, thanks.
But, have you read this from the NYTimes? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/opinion/21kristof.html?_r=0
Apparently the book “Philanthrocapitalism,” by Matthew Bishop and Michael Green points out that,
“Conservatives also appear to be more generous than liberals in nonfinancial ways. People in red states are considerably more likely to volunteer for good causes, and conservatives give blood more often. If liberals and moderates gave blood as often as conservatives, Mr. Brooks said, the American blood supply would increase by 45 percent.”
Sigh.
That’s it? You’re going to link a blog which shows that religion is strong in some states and not others? Find me another link which removes religious tithing from the picture since it’s one of the least efficient “charities” out there… and one of the most politically active. I’m sure there’s another post on the very blog you cite which debunks your original link… just as you found previously. Seriously… how does a blog debunk itself with such verve? Here… I’ll look for it myself… http://philanthropy.com/article/FaithGiving/133611/
That was easy. One of the important aspects of that (also incomplete) study is that religious entities claim they are more pass-through than they are administrative. If that were the case, then faith-based charitable giving would be proportional to end user receipts. That is not the case.
Btw… the book you reference (which is also the sole source of the article you link, making it redundant) tells us the difference between political affiliations is so minute that it’s not really a difference. In fact, while those who side with one party may give at a rate of maybe a percentage point more, they are less likely by the same amount to give of their time. And that’s after a lot of fudging going on with Brooks’ methodology. He changes his values from one page to the next. And he uses data sets which differ from the majority of other data sets for his conclusions, which are also incomplete without those who identify themselves as moderates… the least generous of the three groups. One major problem with Brooks’ conclusions (besides ignoring 30% of the American population… and using data from 40% to claim something of the other 70%) is that he states liberals make more money and give more money, but conservatives give more as a percentage of income. South Dakota versus San Francisco? Really? I wonder what happens when we run Brooks’ bad science through a filter which accounts for cost of living and net discretionary incomes in the two very biased selections for his book.
So your book link just sorta smacks your original premise upside the head… even if you want it to be valid. I’m guessing you haven’t read it and run the numbers yourself. If you had, you would stop at the second chapter where he actually debunks his own premise. That makes this source a little weird.
Thanks for that walk down memory lane. I think I’ll go beat up on some AEI wonks for a little while. Those people are just stale as last week’s half eaten dinner rolls. And they’re so fun to play with. They just don’t seem to understand that when they move values back and forth to fit their arguments, I can do the same to make their arguments eat themselves from the inside out. This particular argument was made about six or seven years ago, and it was easily dismissed as a money grab by Brooks and almost wholly flawed. When people can run the exact same models Brooks runs and come up with varying results (varying from themselves, not just Brooks’ conclusions), something has to be flawed. I invite you to also read his other money grabs… er… I mean very sound and scientific studies published in book form.
Here… this is what I’ve been focused on for the last year or so. Don’t get distracted by those who would divide and conquer to maintain their own power at our expense.
http://amend2012.org/
Jack, great link. I was unaware that someone was getting the ball rolling on repealing the Citizen’s United ruling by the Supreme Court (or more accurately, making a constitutional amendment). I will support this cause.
That’s an old generic link for referendums and the like in the last election cycle. I figured it would get people to look around in their own states to find the grassroots efforts which are progressing. The Oregon legislature passed the bi-partisan resolution calling for an amendment to be passed two weeks ago. That makes us the 16th state to do so, and the fifth or sixth to do so this year. And there are more on the horizon.
The wife and I wanted to go out one night a couple months ago, and we decided on Red Lobster since neither of us had been there in 20+ years. That was one major mistake. Service was good, but the food was rubber. I had the king crab. She had the lobster. For one-third the cost we could have just bought at the grocery store and stayed home to eat real food.
I will never complain about the frozen shipments from Alaska again in terms of price. Compared to RL, it is completely worth it. All you have to do is melt some butter and thaw some food.
I wish it were easier to get quality seafood.
There’s a place in SB called Brophy Bros that is excellent. But they get their seafood from the gulf, so after the BP spill I stopped going (not that farm raised is better). I haven’t had any seafood in two years. I haven’t been to RL in 25 years. Glad to know it still sucks! I remember the biscuits were pretty good.
That kills me…we moved from San Luis Obispo to Corvallis and there just isn’t any fish to be found local except for over priced Aqua and the fish market place adjacent. Yet in San Luis we could go to Avila or Morro Bay or Cayucos and buy direct at the dock. WTF?
Wife’s theory is more people in The Pacific NW fish so there is less market for schlubs like me who enjoy fish but can’t catch one to save my life. ugh.
I think it’s that Corvallis is more inland and SLO is near all the coastal towns. Since seafood and fish spoil quickly there’s the issue of transport and finding a customer. Also seafood is more a cultural thing along the CA coast. Corvallis is more a burger town (broke students, etc). I’m not sure. Sucks you left SLO! I love that town in small doses, not sure how it would be to live there.
SLO is cool. It’s probably also the furthest south and inland I would live in that state… except for a couple places I like around Lassen. But, as a general rule, the further you get from the ocean the more Cali looks like one big meth lab.
Save your life. Catch a fish!
I just have a 14′ skiff with a 15 horse Johnson (a $2,500 investment) and usually keep us pretty well stocked in seafood. The PNW is a smorgasbord if you know where to look. So far this spring, my tally is:
90 razor clams (obviously no boat for that)
26 Dungeness – that last 14 all in excess of 8″
19 Red Rock Crab
1 ling cod
Haven’t landed a salmon yet this year, but haven’t really focused on them. I ventured out over the bar in Westport, WA one day and had two on and lost them both.
So rewarding to eat seafood you landed yourself…and no better quality.
Agreed on that last sentence. I got a 65# halibut last month to end that season. It was my third of the year. Now I have to wait until fall to try to fill my other three tags. Two ling brought in by poke-pulling at a certain jetty (they weren’t going anywhere).
I don’t go for razors. I stay inland for the bays. And I cook the shells in my chowders.
The funniest thing you’ll ever see is a young boy or girl reeling in a dungeness when they think a fish is coming in. I have a vid of my daughter flipping one toward her while screaming “spider.”
Oh… anyone going out for halibut… never take your first catch, unless you’re looking at 50#+. I made that mistake years ago on my first trip out. I caught a 30# fish within ten minutes of setting my hook, and that was the day. Really… that was it since I decided I liked my fish.
Reel them in. Cut them loose. Keep only the keepers. You can only hold one per tag per boat.
Dude,
That night was no picnic down here either!! BTW let’s go back to two-ply. I know times are rough but do they have to rough down here too?
JA
Oh JP… we had a nice… run. We were never… solid. So it makes me irritable inside to say this.
You’re fired.
You can no longer be my butt.
I know… you so wanted to maintain this, the highest of your achievements. Alas, I’ve become pooped with you. My butt deserves more than you and your pedo trolling.
I hope you can understand this. Thanks.
Wanted: Someone to be my butt. The bar was set to a very very very low level by your predecessor. So don’t worry about following that ass. My new butt must have an actual sense of humor. Poop and pee are only funny when you say the words “poop” and “pee.” Poop! Pee! See? That’s funny stuff! Equal housing opportunity.
awe… some
You are so right Poop and Pee are hilarious. Never gets old!! What is not funny is that digital assault you raged on me last night. Look, I don’t care what you do to those dudes up front but please leave me out of your self gratification. The least you could do is clean and trim the filthy fingernail on your index finger and mix in a dollup of lube every now and then!
PS: I am not your butt. I am your asshole. Big difference. That pair of fat-filled pasty sacks straining against that fine Bugle Boy denim is your butt.
JA
You’re my butt, and you like it.
NO. As I stated I am your asshole. Big difference. I do have a high self-esteem for an asshole, so you are right :I do like myself. I am one of your body parts after all and we all suffer from your bloated sense of self worth. But your functionless (other than a extraordinary level of padding) butt flesh is a different entity altogether. I know you were up late “blogging” but don’t let your tired brain fail to recognize this simple anatomic difference. Also the massive amounts of beer and doritos consumed late last night may be an issue later, so lets mix in a nice leafy salad for lunch and I will attempt to keep things in check down here.
JA
Nope. You’re my butt, and you chose this role. I’m sitting on you right now.
I can do this all day.
I am aware you can do this all day. I have the hemorrhoids to demonstrate that fact! It is nice outside, lets try a walk today. I know that you have an aversion to sweat, but there is a lot of venous congestion down here. Between the awful diet, 16 hours per day on the computer, random digital assaults and your ever expanding girth I am not sure how long I can maintain the sphincter tone that you take for granted. Can we at least agree on some 2-ply?
JA
What does an asshole need to do to get some PrepH down here? By the way, did you need to eat the entire bucket of KFC today? I am not sure I can hold this shit back.
“I can do this all day.”
You don’t need to remind us….
So all complaints about the new beav can be forwarded to you friend?
*your
Is your friend’s initials by chance TS?
That actually would have worked better with the “hip hip hooray” thing they got going on now, as well as the tartan and font they designed. Sounds like they had all the pieces working together but said “Wait! the Beaver needs to be modern and sleek!”
Looking forward to football, (I think it will be a good season, even a nice surprise or two) but beyond that to bb (men’s and women’s). Both programs were down last year (2 say the least) so I pondered the new assistant coaches and what impact they might have. Nothing much on Mandy Close (Montana native – OSU alum) but Freddy Owens’s twitter was somewhat enlightening. He and his wife ran a halfmarathom, he spent 4 July at Flathead Lake (I was there the whole week but didn’t see him – it’s a very big lake) and apparently watched the Knicks during the NBA playoffs. Comments below but imo if he can only implement the 2nd one, there might be a substantial improvement in play.
“Execution down the stretch was horrible by the Knicks. NO defense, turnovers & bad shots will get you beat every time.
Freddie Owens ?@FreddieOwens 15 May
Why does every player settle for the jump shot in late game situations instead of attacking the rim and forcing the refs to make a call?
This is pretty cool
Brandon Sprague (@BrandonSprague) tweeted at 2:55 PM on Sun, Jul 14, 2013:
Some random good news for OSU hoop fans – Junior Eric Moreland, who passed on the NBA this spring, trained with Hakeem Olajuwon this summer

I expect to see some finger wagging next season.
That was Dikembi Mutumbo. Olajuwan had the dream shake. One of my all time favorite players in his prime.
my bad, shows my lack of NBA knowledge.
You actually watched the NBA?
I actually did, and still do. I’m Beav”blazer”
I would be if not for Comcast. I hate Comcast.
Can we get half a brain out of the Blitz crew right now? This has been a really piss poor effort even by their low standards.
It’s summer?
Is that the excuse?
Are they just lazily sending morons who want to give their money to willy and nilly over here for fun while also letting JP the pedophile watch over them?
I want more from my trolls.
I will totally eat crow if Bobby D turns out to be my butt. I know I think JP the child molester is the perp, but that’s just a fall back which turns out to be true more often than not.
What if Bobby D reads this blog and now knows we dislike his refusal to go with vintage Benny?
I know… JPedo the Bhever punching letters as some weak troll is a much easier excuse.
But I can imagine the alternate.
I’m not so sure vintage Benny would go with the new look, in particular the football unis. I’m not saying I’m in love with the new Benny, but like I’ve been hearing from others, he’s growing on me.
It’s still better than the old poop smear with eyes. And I do like that it’s our school colors instead of brown. Even retro Benny can’t say that.
I was kind of partial to the old poop smear with eyes!!
You should have recused yourself from this comment.

Boy, fall camp can’t get here soon enough!
yeah…..this blog sure goes to hell with no Beav athletics to talk about
Let’s spend some time reflecting on the Bellbeefer.
I haven’t heard that name in years. Those things were pretty good. How about a cup of pintos and cheese too?
You can probably make a bell beefer by just scraping TB taco insides onto a small burger bun.
Jack!! Don’t do it!!
You’re reminding me of the “chilito”
I ate a ton of those back in the day
Um, you do know that ‘chilito’ is a Mexican slang word for small penis, right?
That was limited to one comedy routine and the audience of six drunk college students who saw it at 3am one night on the comedy channel and thought it was funny. It just means little pepper.
If you want a chilito you can visit beavergopher and go to Zantigo, where the chilito was created. Zantigo was better than TB back in the day (in just about every aspect), even if KFC did own them. They made their foods in-house instead of sourcing frozen crap from Cisco. When Pepsi bought KFC, they were folded into TB, and the chilito was carried over on the menu. But it was a far cry from the original chilito. The new Zantigos in the Twin Cities are run by old Zantigos management who got dumped with the Pepsi buy-out.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’m going to go eat a couple wieners for lunch. As always, I will put them in some freshly toasted buns and add a couple pickles before I munch down.
You do realize you just opened the door for BeaverGopher, right?
Dude,
Limit it to two weiners. Remember that time you ate two entire packages? Talk about Splatter!

I really don’t understand this comment unless you think eating fat and beef makes one runny… which would be your mom’s fault… not mine.
It’s basketball coach autobiography week for yours truly. First up was Ralph Miller’s Spanning the Game which didn’t provide much insight but was fun reading about those glorious 3 years where the Beavs went 77-11 overall and 49-5 in conference play. Next up, Bob Hurley’s Chasing Perfect. There was a quote from Bill Parcells in Hurley’s book that is appropriate for angrybeavs:
“There is winning and there is misery”
Put “They Call Me Coach,” “Glory Road,” “Sum It Up” and “The Smart Take From the Strong” on your list too.
Jack, do you just -1 yourself to get the ball rolling?
-1 for you steveE.
FFFFFFFFFFFFT.
JA
Nah… don’t need to. You’ve heard of butt calls? ^^^^^
I have my very own entourage. They would have nothing to say if it weren’t for me. They live and breathe waiting for me to validate their lives.
I take this responsibility very seriously.
Good morning Jack. Sorry about the tighty whiteys!

I don’t know why these are coming to me, so I’ll continue to forward: JB
“Hi it’s me, Will’s dad again. Since you are all “in the know” maybe you can help me out. My phone calls to the Athletic Department haven’t been returned and I’m..err Will is starting to get nervous. He..err we will be leaving for fall camp soon.
My questions: 1.) During camp may he stay in our Airstream trailer with me. If not, he will require a private room with a hypo-allergic pillow a sleep measure bed and air conditioning not to exceed 64 degrees.
2.) Does training table include macrobiotic rices dishes and super gluten free soy based meat substitute. If not; will I be allowed to prepare his meals?
3.) Will requires his own private hydrating source during practices. He does not tolerate the coloring contained in commercially procured products. I make him a special drink. How do I work this out?
4.) Where is my assigned spot during practice? At Will’s high school I had a special area marked off with state trooper assigned to keep me safe.
5.) Are all practices video recorded? And if so, when and where do I get access? Will I be allowed in the coaches evening meetings? My suggestions are usually greatly appreciated by coaching staffs.
6.) Do any of you Angrybeavs have parking space at your home for the Airstream once the season begins? I can probably comp you a some tickets or gear. (Don’t spread this around, it may be an NCAA violation) but we’re all buddies right?
Please help me out with the above questions. I can’t wait to meet all my..err our new best friends!! Sincerely Will’s dad
I fail to see the point of these diatribes. And, I truly hope you don’t think they are humorous.
I think he is implying that Will’s dad is somewhat of a stage parent.
Au contraire my little friend…. compared to “that’s what she said” and anything relating to Jack’s ass it’s comedy gold.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Will’s dad may become a frequent contributor. JB
I thougth Jacks ass was fairly funny, but then again I have always thought Jack is a pompous ass. I am not the least bit suprised that his ass has it’s own thoughts. Serously, who has time to write 17 paragraphs on Philanthrocapitalism in a sports website. Did anyone out there actually read that entire post?
Pettiboner! Back in the days when you were lobbying to return to your old job you were often fairly funny. Since then, not so much. Perhaps it’s time to resume that quest. After all, many others besides myself still aren’t over how pissed we were (and still are) at Riley while walking out of the Alamodome. Time to bring a smile (again) to our faces Pettiboner. Time to resume chasing your former position. In other words Pettiboner, you’re way overdue to be somewhat funny again.
I agree, Billy…….In fairness to the Boner, this thread was nice early on (well, like in Angrybeav nice) with Will’s old daddy giving his kid a big pr shot, and us making him wish whatever. But then it just came apart…. So the boner has nothing to work with. I mean…..a Jacks asshole troll?
Please, god…..get football here SOON! …even a rumor of a player getting arrested….something.
Well there’s one thing we know about boner for sure. He’s not going to pass on this or in any situation.
Hey Big Guy
Speaking of “passing” where did all that corn come from? That was brutal!
JA
Ja?
Nein!
I don’t know if it’s just you’re grammer or if you completely mailed this one in.
Is it wrong to laugh at the Asian plane crash news fail? i cried, bit then i felt a little guilty.
Not wrong at all, it was the funniest thing to happen in a very long time:

You are correct Jason. All time great prank.
Safety Steven Christian is a nominee of 151 student athletes on the FBS and FCS level for the AFCA Good Works Team for his off-the-field contributions of his time as a volunteer.

Thanks, B4, that was a good story and lead me to another from the Gadget Times:
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-cv-grad-kyle-gardner-leaving-beavers-for-portland/article_568aa45c-ee87-11e2-9b31-0019bb2963f4.html
Many here have been high on Trent Bray, the story on Gardner leaving mentions this:
” Gardner met with linebackers coach Trent Bray, who Gardner said told him, “if you want to be that big-role guy like you were in high school that I know you want to be, I can help you find somewhere to go to get a scholarship.””
To me, Bray comes across as a straight shooter, some other coaches would have played the kid along and used him as cannon fodder. An acquaintance of mine got the “cannon fodder” treatment at Stanford back in the day and would have appreciated the kind of honesty displayed by Bray here.
Good for him. The GT doesn’t give us much.

What’s your point?
Beavs equipment guy tweeted this: https://twitter.com/Beavers_EQ/status/357880386103177216
Also, this use of the Nike OSU font is new to me: https://twitter.com/Beavers_EQ/status/357626706590330880
Maybe Bobby is getting the message? Doubtful….
Getting the message that you like the new font but not the new beav?
The block font is okay. I’m a fan of using consistent lasting marks, something we suck at.
That font will be seen a lot as time goes by, been available as a window decal for a couple months. I agree, something consistent and lasting would be a refreshing change for OS(U)/OSU.
I love the retro beaver. I hope this is available soon.
The classic benny logo is available on quite a few items. Juat look at the athletic store website. Its not like this is a new thing. the lettering is cool in my opinion. always liked blocky letter as opposed to the curvy ones used in the OS logo
Saw the GT piece on Colby Prince training and hoping to make the St. Louis Rams roster.
Made me wonder whatever happened to Joe “The Tank” Halahuni? He seemed like one of the more athletic TE’s from OSU in quite a while.
I see Joe around town occasionally. Last I heard he was working with at risk kids.
Due to his rehab on his shoulder he was a bit behind and with a new kiddo of his own he just didn’t feel like he could continue to chase the dream.
It’s too bad, I think he had potential, especially up until that injury, and he’s a pretty decent guy from the conversations I’ve had with him.
Ouch! Don’t eat at Joe’s. I’m still dreaming of getting off this pot after that one!
JA
This one’s just weak.
Hey JackBeav, would you mind shooting me an email? ConnorOSU at gmail.com
Thanks
Big boy is busy right now. Can we send you a Smell-O-Gram?
PS: I can’t belive he ate the whole thing.
JA
Hey JA…look in a mirror–your act is old, tired and stinks.
I’ll tell you what stinks!!
Really?
Whole what?
Try blocking him first with a butt plug Angry.
I have had years of training! Butt plugs don’t scare me!!

This site is too funny. What a bunch of idiots!! Hey, Will’s dad, welcome to the OSU fanbase. My advise would be to take a walk-on position at Oregon over a scholarship with these clowns. Please Angry, don’t ban the asshole, his stuff makes Jack’s rantings worth reading. I love this site!!
oops: advise=advice. Had to correct that before Jack had the pleasure. What a tool!
“What a tool!” is not a sentence, therefore your grammer sucks.
Angry, is it possible or too off topic if you do a write up on the Lawsuit involving former and current college athletes against the NCAA, EA Sports, and CLC in regards to how it could help or hurt the pac-12 and Oregon State?
B4L
Well, I believe it’s the ’03 game that has Steven Jackson as a White running back with his name on the back of the jersey with the white guy…I always found that to be enterataining. Other than that, I never really liked these games after playing the ’06 version so many times, because there’s a ton of glitches in that version….like when you throw a long pass play downfield, and it falls incomplete, then you throw the same pass again and score a 50+ TD…you still see that incomplete ball on the field. lol There are other glitches too.
My biggest problem with the game is that it lags. The Madden engine is smooth, but NCAA has always had frame rate lag.
Also, it really bothers me that QBs never fumble snaps. Stopped playing all the EA football games in 2003 or so when I realized every year is the same game and I was paying $60 for a roster update.
I am sure Jack will enlighten us soon!
I am sure Jack will enlighten you soon!
Knowledge is indivisible.
Knowledge is indivisible dickhead. When people grow wise in one direction, they are sure to make it easier for themselves to grow wise in other directions as well Prick. On the other hand, when they split up knowledge, concentrate on their own field, and scorn and ignore other fields, they grow less wise—even in their own field Jack.
Irony at its best.
Irony?
Is that like when this lard ass eats greasy burgers, onion rings, and doritos all night while “blogging” and instead of waking up to runny diarrhea we get constipation?
I don’t know I am just an asshole.
-JA
Irony is someone exemplifying that against which one rails.
Irony!! I think I am starting to get it. Thanks my man!!
The minus marks are the ones who had to look up “exemplify” after already expending brainpower googling “irony.”
This would be more fun if my trolls were committed. I want instant gratification. I had a great evening. I’m tipsy. I made a pot of coffee to keep me up until the foxes who have been around for the last month or so come around again. It really sucks that my dog hates them so much. I’m amused by the harmless attacks against me. But if you’re going to go all hater against women, especially those in my life, then I will make you a mark.
I’m surprised you think the HR214 is a POS. Please enlighten further.
Listen Jack,
I am not hating on women. I just want you to get off you ass and mow the fucking yard!
-JFW
You’re quite clearly lowering yourself.
Hating on women is not something I tolerate, and you’re doing it now.
If you’re not careful, you’ll step into pedophile mode like JP the Beaver did when he was trolling this site.
Angry….please get rid of this dickhead.
Angry,
Please don’t get rid of Jack! Jack and his trolls are so funny!! This site has never been better! Beaver Nation at its best.
This dickhead, too…
Dick, head, duck, man…
One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong. Can you tell which thing is not like the others by the time I finish my song?
Go Beavs!
I am by no means a huge Jack fan, but this has become rediculous. Is this really how people choose to spend their free time? I can’t wait until summer practice begins as I think that with our returning talent and favorable schedule this could be a special year. I hope by then these trolls are gone. Go Beavs!
While waiting for practice to begin we could be discussing another feel good piece by Lindsay:
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/07/oregon_state_offseason_qa_kels.html
Contains some wise comments by gymnast Kelsi Blalock on what she learned from boyfriend Jace Fry and the baseball team, stuff that applies to football as well.
Angry…could you please? WTF with the thread progression…
Don’t worry. It’s probably just a couple Ducks who got red ass in some of our back-and-forths taking on personas showing how they feel. They’ll go away.
Censorship is a tool of the weak. Just ask any Duck forum you’ve been on. If you don’t kiss major butt on an ideological level, you’re banned.
Just giggle at them. They’re funny at their roots if not in their attempts to make sentences and thoughts out of words.
Thankfully, these trolls placed their lips firmly on my butt from the beginning… by choice… which wasn’t weird… at all?
Meh… the attacks on women notwithstanding, they’re just bored teen-level Ducks looking for a pond to swim in. That’s what we do. We give them habitat. It’s thankless most of the time, but we win in the end because we’re just that much better than they are to start.
In the end, what do you expect of trolls from the seventh best school in our state?*
*I am not including Marylhurst since I have not researched the school at all. So Nikegon may very be eighth.
Doh! I completely forgot about OHSU. They certainly knock Nikegon down a peg.
It’s a good thing Pullman and Boise aren’t in Oregon… for the sake of rating Nikegon versus in-state schools. That would knock them out of the top ten.
I’m surprised.
Kyrell Hudson is a Beav.
Then he will play in the NFL and be a star for all time.
There! I just jinxed it all?
Fuck that!
Kyrell will learn from Perry. Then Kyrell will get a paycheck.
Just to make it not about money… we might win some games during this period.
Maybe I’m missing the joke here? Is he really a Beav? thought i read something about him going to a juco in California? I havent seen anything linking him back to OSU again.
It’s not a joke.
Hudson will be a Beav. And he will be tutored by Perry, who will help him to the NFL.

sorry… I’m always typing while online, and apparently I slipped. Y’all should be thankful you don’t get the 95% of what I write. I only play on the sports sites. But AB is one of my sites. So don’t F it up! I have full notes.
Dear NSA,

Oh yeah… coming through the rye and all that shit.
Who am i talking to?
Where did you hear Kyrell Hudson is a Beav?
It’s a vast assumption… nothing more.
Wiltjer to Gonzaga. Guess Coach Rob will not be able to work his magic on him.
Did anyone think that wasn’t going to happen?
Ducks?
Ummm… did I not use the word “think” in my question?
Jack,
I can’t believe you were up all night “blogging” and drinking beer. I am serious, now the fucking lawn today or there will be he’ll to pay!!
JFW
Fuck off woman hater. There is a special place in hell for special haters like you. Act like a duck and you’ll always be a loser.
Meanwhile… I can make your life resemble your mind.
Anybody know what’s going on with Lawrence Mattison? I understood he was going to be in Corvallis for Bridge, then middle of July, now 03 August.
First i had heard anything but according to his own tweet, he’s going juco for 2 years and then hopefully transferring.

Crap. I thought MR said all the recruits were good to go.
That is really unfortunate for both parties. I think Riley said all the JC players were good to go? at least that is what I remember reading somewhere. Such a bummer.
Newest member of the all Simi Kuli squad. So much for the visions of him running over the quacks safeties on fifty yard TD scampers.
followup on Lawrence Mattison twitter: “NCAA doesn’t take computer work, and that’s what half the work I did was on ther”
Seems strange that someone at OSU wasn’t aware.
No kidding.
My guess would be that they take certain computer work, and reject other work that doesn’t qualify.
Hey Beaverkman, any good news you can share about football recruiting?
The good news is we have 4 commits, and last year at this time we had none. We are hitting Texas and Okalahoma hard, but it’s a long ways away. We have two QB committed. We are doing well in Cali Brasfield and Brennan seem to be the real deal recruiting. I think I saw that Bruce Read got our last recruit, so any time we can get anything from him feels like gravy!
Bad news is that it looks like Peko is a longshot at best to enroll this Fall, and then the Mattison tweet above. Too bad.
I wanted good news! Peko=very bad news.
Peko = unsurprising. Mattison disappointing, particularly after reading UO received another top RB recruit. I know what they do shouldn’t matter, but I thought Mattison had the potential to be special. If he goes JC, I don’t expect him to be back.
At least now i can stop following Peko on twitter, he’s the worst.
Exactly. He is the poster child for a head full of meat.
I don’t even care that he is gone…he’s that bad.
What’s wrong with his twitter? I just read some of it because you guys say it’s bad. I don’t see anything objectionable. And I can actually understand the language. All in all he’s a little better than average for football players who tweet. Not a single ima fasho… cuz I be trippin on dem.
Where are we getting this news about Peko not making it? His own twitter feed has him saying he will be here on Aug. 2, just before fall camp on Aug.5, in a tweet dated July 15. That’s almost two weeks after he should have known his grades.
I think Tuaau and Tulimaseali’i are likely to be casualties if not only late for camp.
So the run D at the start of this year might look like the last several games of last year…those D-lineman don’t show up, this class doesn’t look nearly as good.
Remember Hautau and Delva are already in. And Tago will likely get some time as a frosh. Add Peko, and that’s a better DT rotation than we’ve had for a while. I don’t know what value Rosa, Robins and Bennett-Jackson will provide. They seem to be tweeners who played in lighter packages and made the rotation because we only had two real DT’s last year.
And Tua’au was going to be DE, not inside. I think we get decent senior play out of Kell and Braun this year for spot duty. There are two other guys who play DE who might be pretty good too. And I like Barnett. We’ll see what he can do this year. We also got the two kids from Hawai’i who will probably RS. So at least we have some young talent to develop there… unlike at DT.

His personal content isn’t so bad, it’s the bullshit he re-tweets all day.
Riley needs to contact his good buddy Chip now that he’s in the league, and find out how he’d get these kids past admissions.
I had the following exchange with Machado on Twitter about Peko. She makes it sound like Peko is still on pace to come in this summer. Also, regarding Mattison, originally Riley stated he didn’t expect him to be available this year, although Mattison later told people via twitter that he was (incorrectly) academically eligible for this year. So it would have been a bonus if he could have come this year, but wasn’t planned. Machado also told me the Beavs and Mattison still have mutual interest once he does become eligible. Just an unfortunate, but expected delay:

CR sucks!
No matter what anyone thinks of CR, he’s starting to pull in elite talent:

You can’t coach size.
Good get
CR can’t coach size or anything else.
Sounds like a personal problem late night info-mercials haven’t been able to mend?
I don’t know how he doesn’t without on-the-court results and meaningful post-season play….I still tend to think it’s the “President’s brother-in-law” effect.
Kids don’t go to a program for novelty. That may get a coach in the door. But then they look at the dark hole of crap the fans and school made this once historic program into, and they pass. It’s a wonder he got anyone with any talent at all to come here. Now he’s starting to beat some of the best recruiters out there. When was the last time you saw a hoops PSA choose OSU over Leonard Hamilton, Josh Pastner (the one former UA assistant who can actually recruit and coach) and UCLA?
Wins and losses may end up showing CR the door in the end. But it’s undeniable that the work he’s done to make OSU competitive again is starting to register with kids. Think of the mountain of work he had to do to just change perceptions, let alone reality. It’s comparable to what Riley did in his first stint as coach here. Just getting this program to mediocre was a miracle in itself.
In reference to an earlier post by Jack about the solar car competition. NPR did a feature this morning – OSU, the winner, prominently featured.

For those of you worried OSU might someday abandon the giant inflatable helmet, dont fear. Its back this year and even featured in the new intro video.

PettiBone will love that one. Wow. New unis…Part of a new stadium…Old helmet with generic “beavs” font on it…purchased at the GI Joe’s fall close-out sale years back….
I wonder if its possible that inflatable helmet might be light enough, such that if it were filled with hydrogen or helium, and detatched, …. it might …. float away!
Such an event would be nationally news worthy, get OSU some pr, and get rid of it as well…..
Angry, i thought you might like this. Further arguments that college football will die sooner rather than later.

Awesome, can’t wait to read this.
One of my best friends wrote me on FB today discussing this very topic. Basically complaiing how CF sucks now. He has been a huuuge fan for years. Granted, he’ll still probably watch every game…
What do you mean by die? Is it like they will be the sport all together or just will lose popularity? Will the same happen with nfl?
Interesting take on the state of higher ed. I don’t know that losing the competitive nature of selective classes can be replaced by MOOCs, but I sure would have taken some while I was in high school just so I could retake them with ease (and for an actual grade) in college.
When we had the education debt bubble conversation here, I talked about how diploma mills were the driving force in that bubble. I finally found a link which covers this within this article:
http://www.educationsector.org/sites/default/files/publications/Defaults_CYCT-F_JULY.pdf
60% of the default-heavy schools are trade/JUCO/CC schools. And I think if we looked at those who defaulted we would see that they are probably mostly students who went to a CC in order to move on to a four year school. But that’s just a guess on my part. My gut says nurses and welders and mechanics are in demand enough that those kids have jobs enough to pay off the relatively low cost of attending these schools.
But also notice what the for-profits and the diploma mills, private (Liberty “University” et al) and public (Utah Valley et al), do for debt. It’s just massively weighted in that direction in terms of dollars owed.
Look at it this way. Say I’m a HS grad who has a job and is working instead of going to college straight out of HS. I’ve found my calling, let’s say it’s business. Now I want to buckle down and get a degree. My options are to go to a four year in-state school, go to a diploma mill if there’s one near me, go to a CC for two years then a four year in-state for two years or take online courses from UoPhoenix.
Cost breakdown for me while living in a cheap flop and eating ramen and holding down a job worth enough to pay for living expenses only… meaning I’m taking out loans for school, books and fees only:
Four year in-state: about $30k
Diploma mill: about $60-70k since the laws here in Oregon forbid them and I would have to go out of state and pay a higher tuition. $24-30k if I were to move then gain residence in any respective state first.
Two plus Two: about $24k (that’s high nationally… I’m going off LCC’s tuition here in Eugene. CC in Cali would drop another four to six thousand dollars off this total).
UofPhoenix: about $60k
Now add up the rough numbers.
This newer study should be a wake-up call for Oregon CCs:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/07/02/college-default-rates-higher-than-grad-rates/2480295/
OUCH!!

Jack I thought you were atheist?
I was still raised a Catholic. So my lexicon is chock full of all these lazy hazy ideas of mythology. It would take a monumental focus over a long period to expunge all these key words and replace them with words and phrases mindless, numb nutted anti-intellectuals like the woman hater above wouldn’t begin to comprehend anyway.
xFuck off woman hater. There is a special place in hell for haters like you. Act like a duck and you’ll always be a loser.
Understood, but I still think it’s worth the effort.
Ok, just read that. Nice piece, very interesting.
But a question occurs to me. College football didnt start because of a media revenue contract…..it started because kids like to play sports. You can get a concussion in almost any sport, or slipping in the shower at home.
Lets assume colleges drop football, for whatever combination of reasons. But the colleges are still there, managing to survive financially. Kids at those colleges are still going to play football, and will eventually get up the best team they can and put out the word to a nearby college that they are challenged in football. And they have that game….. its the start of college football all over again.
That would be cool. Then the media would have to make deals with club sports.
@steveandress: @Jakezivin Rick Pitino said he told President Obama Craig Robinson just needs 1 recruit like Gorgui Dieng (who finishes top-25) at Oregon St
What do people think on this?
How soon is Pitino going to send one? Sounds great to me….
He’s probably right. The talent we have assembled is good enough to be a tourney team now. If we got a top 25 recruit to lead them, we’d be consistently ranked.
If he’s talking about a big who’s drafted in the top 25, he’s also probably correct. Guards can do it too, but the bigs are the ones you can’t contain on the college level.
Notice also that we’re talking about a big from Senegal who came in raw and went out a national champion and a first round pick. I think this comment has more to do with the potential Pitino sees in Gomis and N’Diaye than it has to do with anything else.
Devon Collier is injured.
Thanks for the negative rating. I saw Collier leave Sharon’s Cafe today with his gf and he could barely walk.
I don’t understand some of the minuses either. I think in the case of your first one, perhaps the person meant that wasn’t a good thing that Collier was injured, nothing to do with your post. Either that, or someone doesn’t understand the difference between thumbs up or down.
We just returned from the last home Legion game of the 2013 season; the local team seems to be well-coached, some good defensive plays. Hard to top green grass, good kids playing baseball, hot dogs, and a hot summer’s day cooling down.

any word if it is indeed a commitment?
I thought it might be Shane Bowman (not) or Uchenna Nwosu (got OSU in his name!).
But maybe this is a double secret commit who wants to take some officials to see some good games this fall?
Just dreaming here.
Well w lost Tyler hasty. Dismissed from the team. Bummer, I had high expeditions for him.
What is it with the Hasty brothers? They have an extreme amount of football talent but absolutely no life skills?
Fuck off woman hater. There is a special place in hell for haters like you. Act like a duck and you’ll always be a loser.
Late summer is not the time to screw up for players. With teams trying to find ways to get under the 85 scholarship limit before camp, there’s no hesitation to cut a guy who’s going to be the 4th or 5th CB.
And yes, the Hasty kids are cursed.
4 is not very low on the depth chart for a corner, if Reynolds, Nelson, or Martin go down, someone needs to step up.
I think you’re forgetting Dashon Hunt coming in. He’ll be in the mix early.
I’m not forgetting. I think it’s tough to come in as a true freshman and play corner. But I do expect him to be in the mix. I thought Hasty had a little Jordan Poyer in him so it sucks to lose him.
Sounds like a Hasty decision.
Where are you seeing that? Too bad.
It’s been all over Twitter… started with an ESPN tweet.

Is this a reason for dismissal? Or is this more of a “last straw” thing?
He was a woman hater.
Yes. Yes he… wait… what are we talking about?
Yeah bad idea using my moniker.
IP check shows “beaverbeliver” is the culprit. It also shows he is DuckMan and all of Jack’s body parts, too. Each post originates from the same IP, though they use different email addresses.
Rookie mistake. Everyone knows you have to use different devices if you’re going to troll with multiple names.
Can you just start a fresh thread so that we don’t have to scroll through so much shit to find actual talking points?
Angry,
WTF?? I promise you that I did not make those posts. I do work with a ton of ducks and we share a bunch of workstations. I read your posts daily here They tease me all the time about being a Beav and at times take it too far. Is it possible that is why my IP matches? I love your website and I think that the posts coming to Jack were stupid, immature, and went way beyond the limit. I will talk to my Duck co-workers and possibly my boss and ask that this behavior stop now! I love your site and I am sorry that someone crapped on our playground. Go Beavs.
Yeah, my first thought was beaverbeliver seemed like a good guy, so I was shocked. But all these posts originate from the same IP. Maybe it’s someone at your work, yeah. The use an email with “ginasmith” in it, if that helps you.
I do not recognize that name. Again, if this did come from my workplace, I apologize. I work with a bunch of ducks who love to talk trash and love sports. I would not put this past several of them especially if I left the site up and walked away from a workstation.
Fwiw… I didn’t think it was you from the start, so that was a little surprising. You’re sardonic at times (pot/kettle?), but you’re not an obvious duck like they are. Multiple drops on one IP where ducks waste their employer’s time by circle-trolling sounds about par for the course.
Your coworkers must be on your computer 24/7. Might mean there are security issues at your office…..you’re full of shit lol
“OT”-
Not sure if somebody mentioned it but im hearing Corey Lawrence from Oklahoma didnt make it and will go the JC rout. Still haven’t seen anything indicating Peko won’t make it. I’m hoping that means good things because losing him would be a huge blow to the DT depth.
Neither are in ONID yet.
Christ, what is with all this shit. Can we have any good news?
Just looked again. Remember Eggers reported back in March that Mattison and Hungala might be the only academic casualties. neither of them are in ONID either. Maybe Lawrence is in summer school finishing up? He would qualify as a surprise.
Time for a new thread?
I think Riley at ESPN all day, a mystery commit and the future of college football are all viable topics. The latter is interesting because of the recent ACC/SEC and now Big 12 whining about maybe forming a semi-pro league (with the Pac and B1G complying I assume).
I personally like Buzz Bissinger’s idea of these football programs officially breaking free of the schools but remaining in place and paying leasing fees to play under each respective school’s colors and in their stadiums–a pseudo representation which take advantage of already devoted fandoms. Players would be paid, but they don’t have to go to school.
The problem I see with paying players in any form other than with an education is twofold.
First, the “league” would instantly be open to calls for collective bargaining. And labor has the right to do that no matter what clauses are provided in the fine print any player signs. If there’s a disparity in income, there’s a claim for equality under the law. That argument couldn’t be made for education alone because it has different values to different people.
Second, the “league” would never last without a draft. You could just kiss it good-bye right now if a draft wasn’t in place.
A general thread, or any specific topic you want?
Any topic sans body parts or surgeries performed thereon or therein.
A thread were Jack is limited to less that 50% of the total posts would be nice.
Since this one (and every other thread in the history of threads) doesn’t qualify by your specs, where are we going?
Depth Chart predictions! Debate who should start at QB. Riley commented he’s not going to let the QB competition play out long. He’ll pick a starter early in camp.
Wow, CFN down on OSU – predicting loss at San Diego State, then closing the season on a 4-game losing streak:
http://cfn.scout.com/2/1309311.html
They’re predicting UO loses to UW (which I don’t see) and UA, which I think is possible, not likely. UO has had some high-scoring contests with the likes of UA, and odds are they start to come out on the losing end of 1 or 2 of those.
I wish for them all to pick us in the cellar.
I’m in a fighting mood.
A peace offering to my really really really really… um… not good troll(s).
I promise the irony is only that real people everywhere live and breathe and exist something other than troll-dom. I love S&T, and I share this in the hope that you just let yourself go.
