I’ve got nothing this week. Too busy today.
But I did read the most hilarious sports bit ever: Ed Orgeron had chainsaws playing during practice. Seriously!!? He fears the chainsaw? So funny.
The only USC I’ve seen this year was a quarter vs ASU and Notre Dame. ASU’s speed dominated them. Notre Dame is more similar to OSU, so I expect a game closer to that one. Some weird matchups in that USC has a very good run D, but OSU passes every down.
Anyway, give your take on the game, and I’ll read the comments later. Curious to hear from those who have watched more USC than I have.
Home team has won 9 of the last 10 meetings, so history favors the Beavs. I don’t have a pick, but gun to my head, I think USC gives a scare in the first half, but the Beavs pull it away at the end.
Marquis Lee is supposed to be out. USC QB’s blow so far this year. Beavs win as long as Mannion doesn’t get knocked out of the game. I think he’ll get hit equally as often as he did vs Stanford.
Kessler looked so horrible from what I saw. Sooo horrible.
Our defense will probably make him look like an all american then
Like we did against Stanford?
Kessler plays for Stanford too?
USC will be able to move the ball on the ground a bit. Their QBs are terrible and will probably throw multiple picks.
Their run defense is pretty stout but their secondary is porous.
Beavs by 21.
If the Beavs win by 21, it would be an epic slaughtering of USC. Like Johnson said, he remembers seeing the recruiting rankings for the USC players. These are 4 and 5 star kids with the exception of the walk ons. If the Trojans sack Mannion 8 times and the Beavs score 12 points again, it will be hard to win by 21. I just don’t understand why Cooks couldnt break loose against Stanford, and I hope USC doesn’t have anyone on their roster that can cover Cooks. My biggest fear is that USC will be able to get 4-5 yard gains up the middle all day and control the clock. Big challenge for the Beavs but Langsdorf had better work up a game plan to get Mannion back into the Heisman discussion. Also why are they rushing Hamlett back after a knee surgery a week ago? Even if he can’t injure it worse, can they expect him to be effective. If so he is superman. I actually heard that Hamlett invented Giraffes by uppercutting horses.
The ‘neat’ thing about giraffes is that they have the same number of vertebrae as horses. Same number as humans for that matter. Evolution or did your god wanna fuck with your faith when he invented vertebrae?
I pretty much agree, but at the same time I can see the beavs really coming out of the gates strong to show last week was a fluke week for the offense. If they can play the run like they did against Stanford (which I think they played pretty solidly)this ge could turn ugly for USC.
Tyler Gaffney ran for 145 yds on 22 carries (6.6 ypc) and 3 TD’s. Wow, you think the beavs run d was pretty solid huh?
The bulk of those came on a few carries, especially during that last drive of the first half. Overall, I thought the Beavers’ run defense was better than expected.
Your memory is poor. Other than the 4 yd TD run by Gaffney, Hogan’s scramble was the only other rush on that drive.
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=332990204&period=2
For the game Stanford ran for 185 yards on 33 carries (5.6 yards per carry). Again, you seem to think our run d was solid?????
I still think they did, sometimes numbers can be deceiving. Watching the game I never felt Stanford was controlling the game with their run game, which is what they try to do with their offense. Stanford wasn’t able to move the chains or eat up the clock with their run game.
So if OSU gets into the red zone 5 times for 4th down, how many points would that be? Seriously, we all know Riley looks at this site and will pick up some pointers to not repeat any mistakes of the previous game.
Hasn’t the trend at Reser been for the Beavers to get up early on the Trojans (no pun intended) then have to fight off pretty good rallies?
I don’t have a good feel for this game. It almost seems like it’s just time for OSU’s “streak” over USC to be over at Reser. If OSU comes out still down about the Stanford loss and what might have been, that’s what could happen.
If OSU is really over the Stanford loss, I see them getting a lead, and having to fight off a strong USC effort in the second half, and prevailing. But I haven’t watched USC so I dont’ understand just how bad their offense is.
I know I dont’ trust Riley et al to adjust schematically to help underperforming O lineman (Phillips), I expect them to essentially say “you need to fulfill your assignments this game.” USC has enough front line talent on D to be dangerous to OSU.
I’m curious about a Beavers All-Star team dating back the last 15 or so years.
We seem to have had some fantastic players at each position over that time, but the stars have never quite aligned to bring everyone together on the same field.
If you were to pencil in your favorite starters on offense/defense (+3 special team players), who would you chose to represent the Beavs in their prime? And how would this team fare against the current PAC-12 competition?
Remmers
I started a thread about this exact topic in the football forums back in 2010, ha. Jack gave a (not surprisingly) very comprehensive answer that I pasted below:
Ugh! I’m going to break it down to single seasons.
QB – Jonathan Smith (2000)
RB – Steven Jackson (2003)
RB – Quizz Rodgers (2009)
WR – Mike Hass (2005)
WR – James Rodgers (2009)
TE – Joe Newton (2004)
OL – Jeremy Perry (2006)
OL – Andy Levitre (2008)
OL – Chris Gibson (2000)
OL – Gregg Peat (2009)
OL – the rest of the 2006 O-line
DT – Stephen Paea (2009)
DT – Eric Manning Jr. (2000)
DE – DeLawrence Grant (2000)
DE – Bill Swancutt (2004)
LB – Nick Barnett (pick a year)
LB – Richard Seigler (2000)
LB – Derrick Doggett (2006)
CB – Dennis Weathersby (pick a year)
CB – Brandon Browner (pick a year)
S – Sabby Piscitelli (2006)
S – Mitch Meeuwsen (2004)
K – Alexis Serna (2005)
P – Sam Paulescu (pick a year)
It’s hard not to include Ellison and Bray in the LB corps… and Jackson, Smith and Butler were all very fun to watch at DE as well… oh, and Edwards at DT.
The Kicker Whose Name I Will Never Speak will NEVER be part of any favorable list in my camp.
The LSU loss still stings…
Ah yes… probably the first of many defining moments for this team over the last decade. Can we imagine the good vibes for this team after we go into the Swamp for a night game and beat the #3 team in the nation and their 461 returning All-Americans?
Alas… almost.
The above list needs at least one amendment. Poyer (2012) probably takes a spot now. And Cooks and Mannion will likely play onto the list by the end of the year.
And losing set the tone for the whole season…deflated at BSU the next Thursday, and we fall apart after an early lead. But hey, at least our “kicker’ made his PAT’s. Asshole.
Could argue 2012 Twheat already overtook Quon for the WR spot as well. Add an all around special teams all purpose fancy pants spot for Rodgers like most lists do now a days.
I’d probably go with Stroughter for the ATH/Utility position.
Yeah. Sammie would’ve been pretty lethal at the fly sweep had it been a part of the offense back then.
Hard to find room for all of the deserving WRs.
I think someone like Cooks has more upside than Hass for example; great route running, hands, and ball carrying capability. Same with Wheaton. Wheaton Cooks might be more lethal than Hass/Johnson or Hass/Rodgers. And its tough to leave out Stroughter.
Hell, with that much speed/talent, and assuming you have the best of the best O lineman, you might leave the TE home and go 3 WRs…imgagine Stroughter/Wheaton/Cooks or your favorite combo (Hass/Johnson/Rodgers?). There’s probably an optimum mix based on size and position. Jackson and Rodgers can both pass block and catch and help mitigate the loss of the TE.
Just don’t let Danny call the plays….
I cannot believe this list does not include Darrell Droppings, I mean Catchings or Anthony cream of wheat-brown
Chad Ocho Cinco!!!!
I’ll be the heretic and suggest that if one were taking a player at a position, and at the top of their game, Smith would not be the QB choice for me. I’d take Moore in his senior year or probably even Mannion this year (assuming his performance continues) over Smith. Imagine one of those two, with their accuracy > Smith’s, being protected by that “all star” line, throwing to those all star receviers, and handing off to those RBs.
If you go back and watch the Fiesta Bowl game, you won’t be impressed with Jonathan Smith. Just not very accurate…conversely, you will be extremely impressed with Houshmanzadeh. He can’t be left out.
I would say Moore’s senior year, Canfield’s senior yr, or honestly Mannion’s current year. Imagine what he could do with good protection and a run game! All the previous Beaver QBs had that.
My top 4 WRs in no particular order are Rodgers, cooks, hass, and houshmanzadeh. Then stroughter, then Wheaton. Then ochocinco? Dude was talented but careless and sloppy .
Stephen Jackson was obviously the most talented guy at the NFL level but I think Simonton and Bernard were both more effective for us. I probably vote Simonton.
Simonton? Over Jaquizz Rodgers???? Seriously????
There were two RBs on the list. Rodgers deserves a spot. I dropped Jackson for Simonton.
Does the -1 indicate a Simonton hater…? I’m a little confused. Dude was a stud for us. Monster career yardage.
I think it’s fair to say that Quizz Rodgers and Simonton were the two best running backs of the last 10-15 years. Bernard and Jackson are in close contention of course.
I didnt -1 you, but wasnt Jackson a frist round NFL draft pick, as a junior? And Simonton went undrafted? dont get me wrong, i loved ken simonton, but Jackson was a beast.
By the way, I nominate Jose Cortez for kicker. If the Beavs crossed midfield, he was in field goal range.
He was, and he was insanely talented. And in terms of NFL performance he’s probably one of the best ex-Beavs ever.
But at the college level, where elite speed and size are not requisites to the same degree…Simonton could just also seem to get it done. Top end speed wasn’t great but his initial burst was fantastic and, like Rodgers, he always seemed to be able to pick up at least 3-5 yds, no matter what was being blocked.
My opinion, and obviously you could make a good argument for either Jackson or Bernard.
it wasn’t me either
Can’t put 2006 Moore or 2009 Canfield above 2004 Derek Anderson, no way no how.
Mannion will go ahead of them all, but only if he wins the CW.
I’d take Moore over Anderson. Anderson couldn’t throw a screen pass as well as Moore (it was amazing how poorly Anderson threw it), and lacked Moore’s mobility that was key to extending plays (victory over #3 USC, Sun Bowl). Yet Moore still threw a great deep ball, had good velocity but the ball he threw was catchable.
Moore likely had higher accuracy his best year than did Anderson, but it was frustrating to watch Anderson’s receivers inability to catch his fastball – passes through or off their hands or off their chests. I would bet 25-33% of Anderson’s INTs went off his receivers first before being intercepted. Hass was the only one who could deal with the velocity every single pass.
I was fortunate enough to see Moore lead OSU over #3 USC, and had a great time at OSU’s late season win at Hawaii, when Moore threw a beautiful bomb to Stroughter for an 80-yard TD.
Moore’s mobility > Canfield too. Plus, the guy just seems smarter, which is always a plus.
My comment to Eggers’ article predicting back to back OSU losses at home:
Way to lower expectations. If Riley can’t beat USC with the players and crowd amped from the orange unis then it will be a pretty major choke job IMO. OSU won’t make the Holiday Bowl without beating USC. If OSU blows this then they are looking at the Hunger Bowl with BYU with some work left to even secure that. That would be a disaster. Riley either gets a very needed snapback win or he is below mediocre to lose two straight very winnable games at home. His choice. No excuses.
(I get frustrated with all the continual softball questions the media throw Riley’s way after any loss. Next to no questions about his decision process in going for so many 4th downs and nothing at all about the Mannion QB sneak call from almost a full yard out that 98% of fans seem to have disliked. Eggers was sure to throw in the usual recruiting challenges comment to give Riley a pass if he loses. In year 13, with Mannion and Cooks playing at a high level, this has to be a win to not be a largely wasted season.)
24-17 Beavs
31-23 beavs
Hope Riley doesn’t read this: a must win?
http://www.oregonlive.com/collegefootball/index.ssf/2013/10/issues_answers_beating_usc_is.html
He’ll choke if he does.
The problem for OSU is that both tackles need help in the schemes they employ. There is a good article in SI about NFL teams succeeding with mediocre tackles. That is a discussion for another day. But the best bet would be to remove all running backs on many of the passing downs. No one is fooled by the play action. Put Cooks in the backfield where he can motion and get favorable matchups without getting jammed at the line.
Nobody succeeds with mediocre tackles. Didn’t you remember the Alamo or watch last week vs Stanford? Good call though, we don’t have any even mediocre backs, and should remove the position from the offense immediately. Instead, have Cooks be the “RB” and motion him constantly.
Beavs need to win by 6 or more. Got a bet with my USC alum boss who will buy me lunch it Beavs win by 6 or more.
wow, I haven’t met many USC alums who wouldn’t bet you straight up…
If Lee returns tonight, I expect Nelson and Reynolds to cover him adequately; not shut him down, but do enough.
If Mannion gets time to throw (seems unlikely), will Cooks be shut down on the other side? I doubt it. I am hoping Gilmore can hold onto the ball when he get his opportunities, and Hamlett is able to go the full game.
Seems like USC’s 5-2 scheme might be (?) vulnerable to a RB with speed who, if they get past the first level, would have the room to get some serious yards. I again advocate for some Chris Brown carries….sprint draw simple enough for OSU’s line?
I think we if we’re going to stick with this who cares about a run game deal, we should be sending Cooks or Bolden in motion for the fly sweep/fake on the majority of the drop back passes.
At least keep the defenses honest. It can be our version of the option. Have Mannion read the defense and make the decision, hopefully keep him off his back for this stretch of games against beastly front 7’s.
I agree, if Lee returns Nelson/Reynolds should be able to cover him fairly well. Seems unlikely he’ll be near 100%.
I’m guessing Hatfield will get more chances than Gilmore, hope they both hang on to the ball. As for Mannion, I’ll be surprised and disappointed if he doesn’t have a pretty decent game. If Beavs allow less than 3 sacks BeaverBill wins his lunch bet!
Go Beavs! Win the da-food.
Tonight’s game is on ESPN2? Wasn’t it scheduled for ESPN1 earlier in the year? I see the NBA gets on the main channel, which makes sense, but just wondering if that is a new development.
Pretty sure it has always been scheduled for ESPN2. This is the first night for NBA on ESPN.
Shooting at LAX today about an hour ago. I wonder how this might affect USC fans attempting to attend the game this evening?
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-shooting-lax-20131101,0,3342378.story#axzz2jPrvOenn
warning shot to USC players. Don’t bother coming back if you don’t win
doubtful, as most USC alums fly private out of Santa Monica
This is a dangerous trap game! If we win, as expected, it would put our dreams of an ADVO CARE100 Bowl championship at risk. I can already see the championship banner proudly displayed at Gill or better yet presented at our first home game next year.
I have already staked out an economical bus route to Shreveport but I’m not going to pull the trigger until it’s a certainty. JB
unfortunate choice of words given the above post…just remarkin’
Oregon State needs to win against USC in primetime and get the program positive national perception and momentum. Riley didn’t call a great game versus Stanford but the defense made strides. With a bit extra time more of the big play routes should open against USC and allow them to play a more comfortable offensive style. The Holiday Bowl is at stake and if Oregon State is flat at all it would likely produce a Kraft Hunger or New Mexico Bowl. That would be horrible so OSU better put the orange unis to good use and come out ready and striking. The unis should look great to the sold out crowd and national audience so there needs to be a full team effort to get a much needed win and put some shine back on OSU’s season and program.
Oregon St. 30, USC 20
Beavers vs Trojans:
http://beaverbyte.com
don’t give a shiznit about the uni color.
Rose Bowl is still in play. Don’t aim for anything less.
Rose Bowl is in play if the ducks entire football team contracts a deadly disease and has to forfeit the civil war.
Another “Who’s Next?” video, this time showing various Beaver upsets of USC. Of course it wouldn’t exactly be an upset if the Beavs win today since USC was a 3 1/2 pt underdog last time I checked.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUoitKRNwJM&feature=youtu.be
I don’t think we wil see that video played at the game. It wasn’t uploaded by beaver athletics. I think someone just put that together.
I don’t think they will play that at the game. It looks like someone just took this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkvVpFDeWKU) cut out Parker and played that speech over the top of it. And it was not put out by OSU athletics.
Ha! Good catch. That would explain why they left the possum clip in there.
So speaking of all star beaver RBs, I have a suspicion that Gio Bernard, had we landed him, would have been the best of them all. Anyone been watching him play? He is tearing it up his rookie season. Unbelievable highlight reel. Here’s a pretty incredible one from last night:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CSYbJrDi7bY
yeah, he’s pretty badass. Although wasn’t he injured for a good portion of his college career? He might have been on the list of most talented Beavers, but the injuries wouldn’t have allowed him to gain the same statistical status.
You’re assuming, of course, that he sustains the same injury as a Beaver.
of course
Didn’t his time overlap with Quizzes? Imagine them both and Riley being able to use > 1 RB effectively.
IF the beavs can manage to come out this evening and punch USC in the mouth and get out to an early lead I expect the trojans to fold like a cheap tent
I just hope our offensive and defensive line isnt getting punched in the mouth over and over and and over and over and over and over again. We better not give them an inch on D either. The chainsaws will have something to do with that tonight! Orange uni’s and crank chainsaw gonna be the difference. Mannion will win the Heisman if he bests the Trojans. USC can’t hang with fly sweeps and screen passes. Beavs are way too fast. Look for huge throws down field and nobody within 20 yards of cooks all night! I also expect Storm Woods to have his Quizz moment and finally start getting the big gains he has never been able to come up with.
Schnell with the TE injury report:
Lindsay Schnell ?@LindsayRae19 17m
Smith out, think Hamlett will play. Braun game-time decision as of Wed RT @JClapCPA: @LindsayRae19 got an injury report? Love the new lids.
That’s OK Smith sucks anyway, and Braun couldnt stop my grandma’s wheel chair from rolling down a hill and off a cliff with anything more than a 2.5% grade. I like Braun, but its tough to respect his play. Judging from what we all heard at Pac12 media day, is that opponents don’t either. Hamlett better not be less than 100%. If hes healthy look for a 10-12 catch game with 3+ touchdowns. If he’s not, then maybe 3-5 catches with probably the Beavers only offensive TD. Bottom line is we need Hamlett healthy, or else they will just jam and double cooks all day while Mannion is repeatedly driven into the turf!
I’m not afraid to call out progress when I see it, and REbeavChainsaw1, your posts have been improving substantially. Especially improving in relevancy. It is appreciated. It’s okay to be highly critical and fanatical, but well anyways, good job on the improved posts.
What’s with these wack game times. It’s great to see the games on TV but I sure do miss a 3:30 Saturday start time. Last week at 7:30 pm, on the Saturday before Halloween and now were on Friday at 6pm? It’s a good thing I don’t have a social life.
