The post-Maryland optimism seems so long ago.
We didn’t even have a game thread for Utah. Why make one when nobody even cares enough to comment?
Anyway, they lost again. 0-2 in conference now. I thought Colorado and Utah presented the best chances at wins. Maybe Washington State. 0-18 in conference is not out of the question, and it would put the Beavs at 8-22 for the year. I am thinking they will win two games, maybe versus a WSU or USC. Keep in mind BDC extended CR to two years through 2016 after the 14-18 (8-10) 2010 season. Another great move by BDC.
First! Suck it! I am the only Beav winning this weekend!
Your dedication to pouncing on threads is quite remarkable.
yep. who cares.
Now the Indy/KC game was instructive in many ways but two stand out relative to our on-going discourse. Remember Angry’s comment about QB’s and the “it” factor. Well, Luck’s got it; Manziel’s got it; lotsa guys got it; even Alex Smith (a smidgen). Mannion don’t got it.
And did you notice how Andy Reid, all day long, was scanning his play sheet, writing on it, etc. Andy’s got a play sheet and uses it. Riley don’t got one.
That was a good game, but at the rate KC players were dropping I thought I’d see Andy Reid suit up.
Not a big Alex Smith fan–typical game manager who can’t single-handedly win games, and that’s what you need in the playoffs. A guy like that needs to be surrounded by greatness (ala Trent Dilfer). Mannion kind of reminds me of Dan Fouts or Dan Marino: looks the part, puts up big numbers, always on the losing end of any game that matters.
No mention of Reid’s trademark terrible clock management all game? C’mon.
DOWN
1st 2nd 3rd 4th
2012 % Pass play 39% 49% 71% 57%
2013 % Pass play 61% 61% 90% 67%
The stats would indicate that we had different play callers for each season.
Different identities.
That was a menu Andy was writing on. He was preording his post game food orgy.
This Philly/NO game is intriguing. NO has a slight QB advantage, Philly has a slight coaching advantage. I think the Eagles win…Kelly is clutch and a machine.
I think you’re on crack. The Eagles were lucky to make the playoffs and of Dallas has a healthy Romo (as much as I hate to say that) they’re playing the saints instead. Cheatin Chip and his band of beagles are an average team at best and benefited from playing in a weak nfc least and a weak schedule. Their only win over a playoff team was against the packers without aaron Rodgers. NO will eventually wear them down and win this game.
why the hating of Chip? In the three years he had a chance he took his foot off the pedal rather than drilling Riley for 60 or 70. Now Bellotti, he liked to run up the score on the Beavs; in ’05 he was throwing deep with less than two minutes up by 30 or so; and, of course, the ’08 game when the dux put up 62. I’ll give you that he put Blount in when he needed him t hat one time, and that’s a mark against him, but he’ll have Philly in the playoffs routinely.
because he’s a liar and a cheater. Brilliant football mind but he did not have to do what he did to be successful.
I don’t know about that coaching advantage. Sean Payton is one of the best coaches there is.
Agreed. He’s probably 2nd best after Kelly.
Chip has a crap roster. He is going to dominate in a few years.
I think they will get much better as well after CK gets some roster turnover and more of the players that suit his style of play through free agency.
I was drinking earlier and somehow forgot Belichick. Doh.
He’s gotta be considered the best, though it’s tough to say for sure because Brady makes him look so good.
I will however admit cheatin chip is a brilliant football mind. Beagles D played very well in the first half and made a good QB Drew Brees look very average.
Saints starting to wear the beagles down and pulling away.
Yeah looks like you were right so far.
welp, beagles score and keeping it close.
What the hell happened? I went to brush my teeth, came back, and the Eagles had 10 more points…
and now the beagles take the lead. Does the beagle D have one more stop in them? I agreed with the saints taking the FG on their last possession to go up 6. Only need a FG to win now.
Saints playing it smart here. Keeping the ball on the ground and chewing up clock
That was a great game.
Two great games today.
yeh, and who would have thunk that an ex-beav, Keenan Lewis, would figure in the story so prominently. Lewis’s story actually gives me hope whenever I see our YOUNG DB’s getting beat because he had a real bad time that first year. I make the distinction about younger DB’s and some of the older guys from whom we’ll never see mitigation; #6 comes to mind, of recent vintage
Sean Payton recognizing his D was gased, using a strategic timeout on D, results in a sack that knocks the Eagles out of scoring range. Our coach? Goes to the locker room with 3 TOs and a gassed D. The coaching community has passed him by. Fewer and fewer guys thinking like dinosaurs.
To be fair Riley is only the 55th best coach in CFB and Payton is a top 5 coach. ;)

Is that 55th considering his whole career?
I want a ranking considering only the past 4 years…….that’s Riley now.
I have officially given up on the basketball program. Just two years ago, I was going to practically every single home game. I haven’t went since.
I have been a defender of Craig Robinson since he got here. I think he seems to be a decent recruiter, and from all accounts, a good human being. However, I am really disturbed by his lack of running any type of play. I truly feel bad for a few of the players who think they have a shot at making it into the NBA and using this program as a platform. It’s just not going to happen.
I have contemplated going to a home game soon. Not going to happen. I don’t have it in me to waste my effort going when it seems like there’s no effort by the athletic department to make some changes.
I am a former season ticket holder in volleyball as well. This was something my wife and I did for several years. However, we stopped renewing our tix as well. Until there’s a coaching change, we will not be attending. We will still watch on Pac-12 network, but that’s it. It’s a train wreck every single game. I feel very bad for any young ladies joining that mess. I know probably more than I should about how disorganized that program is. We are appalled that the coach hasn’t been let go yet.
If you know more you should share it. Keep the snowball rolling. If we want this AD out then we need all the dirt.
exactly. I’m in the same boat. I bought a handful of tix for games last year and went to a few but then gave the rest away. Didn’t buy any this year, not going to either. Robinson has had more than enough time. OSU hoops continues to be a dumpster fire. Why do you think no one wanted this job during the last coaching search and we had to settle for this choad who had all of 2 years head coaching experience? Because no proven winner worth two shits will take this job for what OSU is willing to pay. You want to get it turned around? Go out, find someone who has won, and pay the man. Simple as that. Otherwise you’re going to gamble every damn time. I’m sure there are some proven winners at mid majors that would take this job if it paid better.
You want to get it turned around? Go out, find someone who has won, and pay the man. Simple as that. I’m sure there are some proven winners at mid majors that would take this job if it paid better.
Yep. Next coach has to have a track record of winning, and I would prefer a mid major up and coming type guy over a retread.
I don’t completely buy into the money part. I think Robinson is making plenty of money. I have no idea how one would go about selecting a young, smart basketball-savvy guy who wants to make a name for himself and use OSU for a career platform but there has to be one out there. I wouldn’t care if he stayed only a couple of years, just to jumpstart. I feel really sorry for the players. I think they could do well with a different coach. Craig Robinson was doing his Craig’s peculiar substitutions and time-outs again today.
Way back when, I didn’t think OSU would beat Utah.OSU players are as good or better but Robinson vs. Krystkowiak – ha. I like to check George Dohrmann’s twitter during OSU men’s bb games – apparently Connor Le does also.
Finally, how did Keenan Lewis get to OSU from Louisiana?
From what I remember, Lewis and Mike Wallace were a package deal originally. Then Wallace changed and went to Mississippi. Luck o’ the Beavs
Wallace was the guy we were after, and he wouldn’t commit unless the Beavs took Lewis as well. Then, Wallace opted out, but Lewis honored his commitment…
Lewis, Dennis Christopher, and Wallace were all from O Perry in New Orleans. Lewis all were 2 stars, except Walllace who was a 3star. Neither had very many offers. All three committed to osu and signed. However when I think it was Houston Nutt got the Ole Miss job he brought in Walllace high school coach on his staff. The high school coach brought Wallace with him.
I think initially Wallace had trouble getting into osu, but no trouble getting into ole miss mysteriously.
I think he flew, but he may have done the Greyhound thang.
You forgot hitchhiking or the train. I’ll try again. Who recruited him and how often do OSU football players come from Louisiana? I don’t recall any recently, but I haven’t checked the roster. It seems to me that there should be a gateway to kids down there based upon OSU’s association with Keenan Lewis. Are recruiters not trying in that part of the country?
The first person I would make a hard run at is Boise State’s Leon Rice. Ex Gonzaga assistant and is getting it done at BSU.
Pat Casey is a more vital oasis with every passing season.
textbook final drive by the saints and excellent clock management. Hey Riley, THAT’S how it’s done
8pm? Riley’s asleep on the couch with his mouth hanging open and his dog licking his nut sack.
Haha
I hate to belabor this point, and I do so only with hope that with repetition Lindsay will file this away for future reference: I noted that Chip Kelly and Sean Payton, hell, even Rob Ryan, all had their play cards close at hand. “So Mike, just how is that you’re calling the plays when we never see a play list in your hand?”
I feel like I remember seeing him with one earlier in the season but it disappeared later… Can anyone else confirm or am I just crazy?
I think there was one time early in the season when the camera was on him, and he was just standing there chewing gum and looking at the scoreboard. He was holding something, and it looked like he discovered he was on camera. Then he hurriedly lifted whatever he was holding to make it look like he was reading it. That’s all I remember. It flashed away too quickly after that because the Beavs were already lined up and set for the next play.
When you have run the same seven plays for the past 30 years, a play card is not necessary.
Plus, it is harder than hell to hold on to that thing and the handlebars on the commute to work.
Why would he want play sheets in hand? Riley doesnt care about the outcome of the game. He is just spectating. And quit giving examples of other teams doing end of game drives and good clock management. Riley doesnt give a shit about that.
And nothing is going to change that…
he has them written in crayola by his grandson on those bags from in n out burger
I wish… it’d beat Langsdorf
What I have noticed is on defense they try to shot block but nobody’s picking up the shot blockers person and that is the guy getting the block/rebound and puts in uncontested. If they are going to continue to have that defense then they have got to get the guards to crash the boards or they will continue to give up points even after getting the initial stop.
exactly. Two or three guys go for the block, no one boxes out to rebound.
They out rebounded Utah. It was really the turnovers that killed them (and the weak perimeter D).
Yep it’s flailing and flopping, no communication whatsoever. I’m really starting to hate each one of our players. Sometimes, something good does happen but then is erased by some horrendous blown assignment or lack of —– coaching?!?!?!!!! CR is a joke. I mean a complete joke. He has ZERO chance of turning this around. Way closer to 0-18 in conference than to the NCAA tournament at this point.
I watched the game today, first time this season. My son was home and I forced him to watch it as well. In his words, they are simply boring to watch because they lack energy on D. (he said the same of Utah, too). I decided not to hate on the players though – i don’t see the coaches on them about the poor D or making game time corrections. In fact, i didn’t see much energy from any of the coaches either. Do we have asst coaches? Don’t they ‘assist” during the game?
I coached AAU ball for 8 year – something like 250 games over that period. The problems are fixable but we need coaches that study the game and see how good D is played. They lack some really basic stuff – weak side support, zone movement, screen help, and avoiding bad matchups after a switch.
As long as CR is coaching, I’ll continue to $upport Gonzaga and kick off March Madness in Las Vegas.
Looks like it a 24th year without a trip to the NCAA tournament. I’m glad I adopted Gonzaga as my MBB team a few years back. The WCC tournaments in Las Vegas sure beats the PAC12 tourney as well.
Liepold and Wisconsin-Whitewater won again, maybe the guy needs a new challenge:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/college-football/news/20131220/wisconsin-whitewater-mount-union-stagg-bowl/index.html
Keenan Lewis gets some positive attention in the video summary of the New Orleans/Philly game:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl/news/20140105/new-orleans-saints-philadelphia-eagles-nfl-wild-card/
I think it will be interesting to see what happens if the bottom completely falls out and the Beavs are 0-12 2/3rds through league play, does CR get the Jay John treatment with an early exit or does he get to coach out the season?
Leslie Robinson has committed to Princeton.
Under God’s power she flourishes
looks like she’s smarter than her pa
One can hope for the Jay John….
Did OSU recruit kaepernick? I forget the story with that.
“Kaepernick had interest from Arizona State, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, UTEP and Wyoming but only had one offer which he ultimately accepted and that was from the University of Nevada.”
http://firstdownapp.com/from-signing-date-to-the-super-bowl
I remember a lot of recruitniks being upset Riley didn’t offer but can’t remember why he didn’t. The way I remember it Kaepernick wanted to be a Beaver but was never offered. Anyone?
I believe it centered around with Kaep wanting to play baseball and football, and Nevada was the only one that offered both. I believe we wanted him for baseball but didn’t offer for football, could have been the other way around?
Well that really sucks. Between him and Moore it’s enough to make you scream.
I realize recruits get away, but those guys both had no offers and high interest in the Beavs and everyone who followed recruiting closely felt they were steals (just like Jordan Poyer, who OSU almost didn’t offer, too). So frustrating.
Anyone who followed recruiting? but not Arizona State, Stanford, UCLA, UTEP or Wyoming? Seems like hindsight bias to me…
Just looked it up and scout had him as a 2 star.
Would have been nice to have him but I would think there would have been some moaning and groaning on sites like this that we won’t ever get to a BCS game if all we can do is pull in 2 star QB talent.
Moaning and groaning about 2 star recruits on here? No way!
Any truth to the rumor that Banker was asked by the Packers’ organization to provide a game plan to stop a running QB?
Pretty sure it’s all just execution. The general gameplan has been known for ages…
Just notices another recruiting fubar from WA State:
The AP all state team named QB Nick Mitchell to the 3A 2nd Team (OSU commit).
The 4A 1st Team QB and 4A Player of the Year was Reilly Hennessey from Camas HS.
He was also named Gaterade POY in early December:
http://www.columbian.com/news/2013/dec/05/camas-reilly-hennessey-gatorade-state-player-year/
Reilly’s sister is an OSU freshman and I believe at least 1 parent went to OSU. I’ve met his dad during Dad’s Weekend this year and i believe they are also season ticket holders. Reilly never even got a look from OSU, and has chosen EWU. I”m certain the young Reilly will school the old Riley in a few years when EWU comes back to Corvallis. #SMH
NW Prep Report article, “Reilly of course wants a shot at the Pac 12 etc. but says all he can do it continue to climb and continue to work.”
Just so I’m following along, it’s laughable when the Beavs get a recruit with only interest from FCS schools, but when they don’t go after a two star QB with no offers from anyone except EWU it’s smack my head worthy? No.
Sounds like the kind of player & person Riley is supposed to like.
Riley ought to offer EWU qb…
Top QB from California, a junior at Folsom, dad a former OS QB. Is he being recruited by the Beavers? PS if EWU goes after a QB, pay attention. Being a PAC 12 snob is what got the Beavers into the rut they are in. PSS, Miles Jack was a 2-3 star guy for much of his recruiting until the suckups starting noticing that UCLA and UW were interested.
@seanmannion4
I’m excited to announce that I’ll be returning to @oregonstateuniv for my Senior season, can’t wait to keep playing for #BeaverNation!
Interesting. He’ll really be taking on a lot of responsibility (which one would hopefully be able to expect from a Sr QB) with the lack of a true, experienced, go-to WR.
The TEs should be there for him, hopefully the 2013 late season run game becomes consistent and legitimate, and the supposed off-season evolutionary additions (e.g. NE Patriots-style shotgun + run game) will actually see the field next year.
I find this a surprising development and think he deserves some respect for this. He’s risking some draft stock (even if he was going to maybe go in rounds 3-last) as he’s unlikely to top this years gaudy numbers.
I think the 2014 season just got a little more interesting.
His numbers might not be better next year but he’ll have the chance to prove he can make NFL throws and perform against the best competition which he didn’t do very well this year.
Yeah…..he pulls out a couple wins against the best, and he probably ups his stock. It should energize the rest of the team so that’s another plus.
Interesting the NFL advisory gave him a 3rd projection. I would think that would be enough for him to come out. I don’t know what he could do to improve that on next year other than being a finalist for the Heisman and getting the Beavs into the upper division of the Pac12 North (first or second).
Interesting, Wall Street Journal says OSU Beavers football program valued at $150M, 42nd in nation and 8th in Pac-12. Utah valued slightly higher:
http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304887104579302752525141772
5 NFL teams valued lower than Texas Longhorns.
How much is the program worth without Boat Anchor Banker?
Boat anchor Banker. LMFAO!
What is the best lineup at defensive line for OSU next season? There seems to be a rare (no pun intended) richness of beef, with Delvin, Hautau, RSO Noke Tago, and transfer Jalen Grimble all 300 lb+. Allegedly, Peko is still planning to work his way into good academic graces.
There should be little need to move Wynn inside, and he seems the lone, legitimate DE threat on the roster, unless Jashawa James or Bennet-Jackson really develop this offseason(?). But none of the DEs appear to be genuine speed rushers.
It looks like it might be advantageous to run a lot of 3-4, rotating these big DTs to keep them fresh, and getting speed from the LBs?
I think Grimble is a lock from what I’ve read in practice reports. None of the guys this year excited me much at all (understatement) so hopefully Peko actually shows up and is the real deal. DE is a huge question mark too. If we hold on to Shane Bowman from Bellevue (recently offered by UW) he could be a possible early contributor. He’s got good size and speed listed at 6’4 243lbs w/ a 4.6 40.
If Peko hasn’t got his academics in order by now I highly doubt he’ll be here. Jesus, it’s not that freaking hard.
If he shows up maybe his nickname should be “Mongo.”
Mongo: Mongo only pawn… in game of life.
I wonder how hard it can be to play DT in OSU’s scheme? Writer’s always talk about how challenging the scheme is to learn – really? How many different things does a DT have to think about doing out there?
I can understand the step up in competition and play from opposing lineman, but scheme assignments?
I remember seeing a post from his twitter and reading a K. Eggers article stating that Peko was in and was expected for Spring Ball this year. So for all intents and purposes you can pencil him in the depth chart.
Here you go:
Kyle The Creator ?@kyle_peko65 2 Jan
“I will be seeing you Corvallis in March”
I’ll believe it when I see it. He’s had over a year to get his academics in order. Simi Kuli anyone?
Apparently Kuli just has to pass one class and the plan is to greyshirt him in prep for 2015.
Sasquatch is a “soft verbal” but Riley is cautiously optimistic.
Kul.
I guess that you have no clue about the difference between quarters and semesters. Peko may not be the only one requiring study hall.
I think Delva and Hiautu could really benefit from off-season conditioning that they missed last year. Each could lose about 15 lbs. Keep them injury free next season would be huge.
Not sure what to think of Wynn. He does not play much on the edge anymore? Bennett seems like he got better as the season went on, be just seems a little lite at times.
Mannion wisely coming back
Sean Mannion @seanmannion4
I’m excited to announce that I’ll be returning to @oregonstateuniv for my Senior season, can’t wait to keep playing for #BeaverNation!
Good decision by Mannion, and great news for Beaver football.
Besides the obvious advantage of having Mannion play for OSU next season, there should be a less obvious and more near-term advantage for the Beavs.
As a returning redshirt senior captain, the son of a successful high school coach, and a student of the game (as well as a hard worker), Mannion should be able to help his receivers improve this off-season. The young receivers in particular (e.g., Victor Bolden, Malik Gilmore) should benefit a lot from working with Mannion (just as Cooks did last off-season). I look forward to watching some of these “unofficial” workouts this Spring and Summer, if/as time permits.
No mystery why Mannion should be super-movitivated to do all this. Mannion will likely be a man on a mission for the next 12 months (with Mannion’s primary goals being to improve his skills, achieve better results, and raise his NFL draft position for next year). Because so much of his fate depends on OSU’s receivers, my guess is that Mannion will push Mullaney, Gilmore, Bolden, et al very hard. That can only help come Fall.
It also helps the he has graduated. He can focus exclusively on football.
Yeah…..with a top, proven QB coming back, the rest know that if they work hard the results will be good. Should be a real lift for the whole team.
Ah just over a month away!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keHo-MgabQs&feature=youtu.be
Mannion already has his undergrad degree. Hasn’t started looking at a masters program. Makes you wonder how many teams will go the Wisconsin route and try to snag him this year? I don’t reLly understand giving up that 3rd round money when you’ve already got your degree. Especially when next year’s qb draft class will be deeper. I’m glad he’s back, but just hope it doesnt bite him in the ass.
Not that he’s stupid, but I don’t think Mannion could go to another program and, in the span of one off-season, pick up an offense, terminology, etc. and implement it at a high level in ’14 like Russel Wilson did.
He could easily pick things up in another program. You have been conditioned by OSU coaches to believe that quarterbacking , especially nfl style, is akin to rocket surgery. Not so much.
Like I said last month, I’ve detached from hoops emotionally. Football was good training for this. I can watch the games without getting all excited or frustrated. Until they take the talent on hand and actually play up to the level they can, I’m not going to expect much from a Coach Rob led team.
I don’t know why anyone here thought CU would lose at home this weekend. If you’ve been following CU since they were so very lucky to have Jeff Bzdelik hired away, you would know that Tad Boyle is one of the best coaches in the nation and very rarely loses at home… to anyone. For some reason, OSU just matches up well with CU (and UW and UA at home also). SO it wouldn’t have been crazy for us to win. But the odds are still long until potential on our side is even remotely realized.
And we’ve never done well at Utah for whatever reason. We’ll likely beat them at home, but I chalked up a loss before the game started. Winning league road games takes great effort. Good effort just isn’t going to work… unless you’re a pathetic Husky team visiting an even more pathetic Sun Devil team. Wtf with ASU this year? They have to be the most manic team out there.
Anyway, I expect something like a 6-12 record this year unless this team wakes up. And the wins and losses will look a lot like last year. Wazzu, UW, Utah at home, we’ll make that lay-up against USC this year, Stanford… and we’ll get one head-scratcher of an inspired win over someone who doesn’t deserve to lose to us in our current state… just to remind us that we CAN play that well… but rarely do so.
20 wins before the Pac tourney could get a Tourney bid. That’s 12-4 to end the season. That won’t happen. A Pac tourney championship could get us there. It’s more likely given Coach Rob’s ability to get a good three or so weeks out of his players late in most seasons. But I wouldn’t count on that either.
Coach Rob has done some good things for OSU. Winning just isn’t one of them. Most good coaches would have been crazy to come here in 2008 given the condition of the program. Coach Rob has taken that out of the equation now. The fans are lacking after 20+ years of neglect. But who can blame them? The program is in a good place now thanks to our current coach’s efforts. But it looks like wins at this level just aren’t going to happen with Coach Rob.
Pac coaches on the hot seat: Bone, Dawkins and CR
On the verge: Sendek… mostly because he’s just a terrible coach.
Benefit of the doubt for now: Romar
Our Beaver Nation would have traveled better than Auburn. Surprised we didn’t get the invite.
What is this open field “tackling” occurring in tonight’s game?!?
Beavs only woked on the “open field” part last summer
I watched the last 2 minutes of the championship game. What was with the announcer saying “we” and “us” like he was in the f’in huddle.
I didn’t really enjoy watching the last two minutes even though it was back and forth and a close game. Something about the SEC/ACC is so boring and unwatchable. The telecaster circle jerk doesn’t help.
I thought Auburn scored too quickly. I actually enjoyed the last several minutes but for the announcers…totally agree there.
I heard the end on the radio, much better than watching im guessing. If Auburn had won i wouldve won my office bowl pick pool. I knew Id lost the big money when Auburn scored too quickly. Someone didnt watch the civil war. Our delay the score theory grows stronger and stronger all the time.
I thought it was a pretty entertaining game. Only watched the 2nd half, but it looked like both defenses were playing well most of the game but also got gassed by the final minutes, resulting in the scoring flurry. Auburn’s D-line was pretty dominant for much of the game.
Mason, the Auburn RB, is a great player. Thank god the F’n SEC didn’t win again.
I tuned in about 15 minutes after the game was over. I caught the highlights. That was enough.
The Portland Tribune has an article on Mannion’s decision to stay. Some of the more interesting highlights pertaining to the 2014 season:
“He needs 1,839 yards next season to pass USC’s Matt Barkley (12,274, 2009-12) as the all-time Pac-12 leader.
“I wouldn’t say that was part of it at all,” Mannion says. “I’m not a stat guy. It would be a very cool achievement, but I wouldn’t say I’m staying to break records.”
I would say it’s almost certain he breaks it and could really put some yardage on top of it.
“While Riley doesn’t want to turn Mannion into a runner, he’d like his quarterback to be able to scramble and slide when picking up extra yardage is necessary. Mannion wants that for next season, too.
“It’s not something I’m going to make a habit of doing,” he says. “I’m not going to have 15 rushes a game. But speaking with people who gave me advice — not only to help my team win, but for my draft stock — it’s a chance to show on third-and-5, I can run for six yards and a first down.
“I’m not psyching myself out over it, but if I can make a few plays like that this upcoming year, it will serve me and the team well.”
I’m not sure why they waited so long for this, but it would be welcome to see an OSU QB take off and successfully get even several yards when needed. There ares some young QBs on the roster and in the verbal list that appear to be more mobile than Mannion, so hopefully this is a programmatic approach and they are all taught this every year.
http://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/206585-63459-mannion-eyes-2015-nfl-first-round
LOL … “not sure why they waited so long for this”…. First, that talks like we have seen it in action. We havent and most likely wont. Any follower of Beaver football can tell you why. Riley doesnt innovate. And I wouldnt hold my breath in expectation of actually seeing any QB scrambles next year. Just Riley idle talk? Probably.
Keeps the heat off while his staff continues their brain-dead monotony
I’m guessing what RIiley has in mind is Canfield 2009. No designed QB runs, but some key 3rd down rushing conversions once the play breaks down.
Canfield and Mannion are pretty much equally immobile, but Canfield picked up some huge 3rd down conversions simply because the defense didn’t respect his scrambling enough to cover him. Mannion would be the same story…just needs the confidence and judgment to commit to the run and go.
I remember Mannion running for a first in the 2012 ucla game. Can anyone else remember any others?
I wouldn’t expect any more.
I just hope young, mobile qb’s are coached to their running strengths, which is likely a vain hope.
We dont recruit such QB’s, do we? Who right now, is one?
Any truly mobile qb would want to go to a program where that strength can express itself, and that isnt OSU.
Riley’s not much for innovation, that’s for sure. If he were, I’d be more intrigued by a recent tweet from Dylan Wynn where he said, “Getting antsy waiting for this off season. Big changes in store for myself”
Be a big surprise if Riley goes “Myles Jack” with Wynn, even though Dylan seems to have the moxie to do the job.
Wynn at fullback or h – back is fine, but Anderson should be as t full strength and I hope he gets his opportunities.
Or, is Wynn excited about a different D role?
3-4 Defense?
Sex change for Dylan?
I believe it’s Dyanne now.
Was reading the 2014 pac 12 football schedule will be released sometime in the next hour. Arent the Beavs eligible to play a 4th non-con game since they travel to Hawaii? That extra game could be key to Riley getting another contract year. (PSU, SDSU, Hawaii, 4th non con game, Colorado and Cal)
Not sure yet which teams the Beavs skip this year from the south.
Yay! We’re undefeated!!!!

Are we not undefeated?
Skip the same teams as last year. It’s on a two year rotation.
Not sure if another game is necessary. It would have to be a home game and they’d have to schedule it in the next few weeks before season ticket renewals go out.
I doubt they will. The only time they could do it is the third week of September. Then there would be no true bye weeks during the season.
There’s still a bye week before Stanford. I wouldn’t mind an extra September home game. That’s the best time of year to be in Corvallis in my opinion.
The bye is technically before the Thursday game against Utah.
Yeah, my bad. So Utah is a Thursday game, which means most likely no game the weekend before will get added. At least if we’re going to play a Thursday game, it’s nicely situated so we get extra days of game prep for both Utah and Stanford.
So pretty much last year’s schedule aside from the PSU/EWU swap and swapping home fields. Not that it matters much. I don’t see the Beavs defense stopping many of those teams with next year’s personnel.
Switch out a EWU loss for a PSU win. I foresee this team starting 7-2 and finishing 7-5. 4-5 in conference 3-2 at home 1-3 on the road.
Yes! One more year for Mike and company. Building for a Rose Bowl in 2025. Go Beavs!
I could see 5-3 going into W.S.U. game…
boom going to be tried At defensive end. Like it.
Joel may be out at middle linebacker do to concussions.
