I don’t understand the concept. I’d much rather watch a hoops game than a football game though I know the outcome of either going in. I watch Beav football games because I’m emotionally attached. But I think I totaled another 4 to 7 quarters of football for the entire last season except for the obligatory one quarter of Duck football every week I had to watch before my wife was just bored.
I can’t blame her. Football is just boring.
As a contrast/comparison, I’ve watched at least 10 full college hoops games in the last five days. I’ve also watched a lot of NFL football, which is not so boring… or so bad as college football.
I guess this is all opinion, but I can’t watch NCAA football outside the Beavs. I find the bias and circle-jerk too annoying. NCAA basketball, I am one of those guys who only likes the tournament. But after the first few days I even get sick of that unless there’s a Cinderella still alive. The only sports I watch anymore are NFL (and this likely due to playing in a fantasy league with friends), MLB (my favorite sport by far…I am baseball obsessed), NCAA baseball, and Beaver football.
Most people consider baseball to be boring. I find it to be an art. It’s all how we’re wired and what stimulates us. I like the slow pace of baseball since I’m naturally anxious/high strung, and I also find it to be artistic in many ways.
I love baseball and soccer as sports with an “art” aspect attached. In one, there’s a contingency based on every play and many based on the action. In the other, there’s constant action with contingencies based on one or two great plays. I love hoops because there is constant action, but I have to admit the addition of four TV time-outs per stanza just kills the sport. The “art” of calling TOs just goes away with that condition, and it becomes a sport where there can just be too much over-thinking. Still, I love the sport as a pure sport. But the overabundance of TOs is a very real hindrance to its watch-ability.
If I could, baseball would be a game I would attend all season live. It is best live, and I love the relaxed atmosphere. Watching it on TV is torture unless I’m emotionally involved. I love watching the ball boys play catch with the extra outfielder during breaks, and I love watching the ground crew scrape the paths and the raking the mound. It gives the game purpose and all the fantasy I want from watching an event.
I almost think attending a polo match and watching people stomping divots makes the event more worthwhile than something like a football game. If it’s not about the spectators, what’s it all about?
I am fully vested in the Tourney to the point where I have requested days off for the first two weeks fo a couple decades now. I also love Cinderella. But I just know there’s an elevated level of play when those days come.
I can also expect this from the plethora of regular season games. There is just a lot of compelling play to be had.
I really wish my team would be one I list as compelling. But oh well.
And college football is pretty boring unless I’m emotionally attached. It’s just not good sport. It’s boring, and it’s sloppy. Only the emotion can make me an apologist for that sport.
Watch the NFL. They are very good on every level. To be good on that level takes great effort and ability. You are watching skill against skill, and skill is usually the reason someone wins. Watch the NBA. Those guys make a lot of their shots. It’s like watching a concentrated version of college hoops. If you even remotely entertain the idea that college sports is “better” than pro sports, then you are an immense idiot with little hope for recovery.
Bullshit. Just like Charles Barkley said: “White folk don’t want to see guys with cornrows and tattoos who get into trouble.” The NBA is a yawner until the playoffs. Think about it…..do you really think these guys play hard for a full 82 games?? I don’t disagree about the talent level, but there are only a few teams that actually play as a team, and San Antonio is one of them…

You never get to see the drama of five smaller, slower kids beat the perennial favorites because of a great gameplan and teamwork in an NBA game. You never see any “real” emotion in the pros either compared to the love of the game you see in college.

The only thing college hoops has on the NBA is arena atomsphere, and that is in only about 2/3 of the NBA arenas. The college hoops game is hard to watch, as far coaching, gameplan, and execution. It’s not a bad product if you take it for what its worth. I have seen more “emotion” from a Golden St vs OKC game then I do from most college games, and much better play.

I think you confuse yourself here. You say that the pro sports are better, but you say you LIKE the college game more for reasons other than something quantifiable. I too like college sports more, especially if I’m emotionally vested. But I don’t even remotely pretend that it’s better just because I like it more. That would make me an idiot. I went to the NCAA tournament games in PDX in 2013. I think it was Indiana vs. VCU, followed by Louisville vs. New Mexico. Turned out to be a great night of basketball and both games went down to the wire. Was really fun to be a part of that crowd, rubbing elbows with fans from different parts of the country. I think it will be back in Portland in 2015 and I’ll definitely be going back. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen tournament games in person. tickets weren’t hard to come by. I bought them from the box office on game day and they were only a little more expensive than an NBA game (and you get 2 games back to back)
agree-I’ve been to the last two Final fours in San Antonio (98 and 04), and bunch of first round venues in other years. energy level is quite intense, especiualy when an underdog is in the mix.
98 we were next to last row end zone (actually not a bad location), and 04 we were 10 rows from courtside in the Conn. section…hanging with Rip Hamilton and a couple other guys from the 99 championship team.

I thought it was interesting that a 13th game was never even discussed? They had no problem getting one on the books in 2006. I wonder what the concern is…..going 6-7 and missing out on a precious lower tier bowl game?
I guess it’s probably injuries, but that’s kind of a wimpy way to run a program. Go on the road and get some exposure against someone good. I’m looking forward to that one game in a three week span in October because they decided to take another bye!

And I am correct about that so definitively that anyone who disagrees also thinks my 8 year-old son can beat me at hoops on any given day… or some given day. That is a fair comparison.
