Beaver fans seem excited about Xavier Hawkins, newest commit.

Here are his highlights.

Folks from Tennessee say he’s under the radar and one of the best players in State. Reminds me of what Oregonians said about Jordan Poyer. With Poyer the talent was obvious, but I am not seeing it with Hawkins. He looks to me more like Malcolm Marable than Jordan Poyer…

  1. according to scout, offers from………………

    Austin Peay
    Campbell
    Tennessee-Martin
    UT-Chattanooga

How is this guy only a two star?

    Wow

    • He is small, quick and fast.
      5’9″
      171 lbs.
      10.72 100 meters
      21.94 200 meters

As they say, you can’t teach speed. Only time will tell if he can hold up physically in the Pac.

      • if he turns into the next James Rodgers, fine. But for every 10 players this coaching staff takes a chance on developing, I’d venture to say at least 8 never pan out. Not a good way to build roster depth.

        • One thing to note about James, he was tough and he could break tackles, and he ran great routes. This kid maybe all that, but time will tell whether he can break tackles or block. Now if he only returns kicks that’s one thing. But if that’s all he can do then he will be very limited on how the staff can utilize his speed.

Bolden had a few moments, but I don’t think he was ready physically or athletically to play this past season. How many of these guys can you have on your team before it becomes a disadvantage or a weakness teams can exploit?

You can’t teach speed, but if you can’t get on the field and play fast then what good is it? Hopefully he can come in put on some weight and contribute.

          • Boldin was essentially a non factor (actually, negative factor in the Stanford game) until garbage
time in the Husky game. All those kick off returns (you can only get practice like that when you are getting blown out) paid some dividends in the Civil War when, at last, he became a factor. It just goes to show how much the program has fallen when a season like that is written up as “promising,” (as opposed, for example, to Steven Jackson’s freshman year).

How I miss the “our goal is to compete for the Pac 10 championship” days.

      • “You cant teach speed”. As a track coach, I’ve always thought this was the dumbest catch phrase. You in fact can teach speed, I can teach it quite well.

        • No you can’t. Sure, you can give a slow sloppy runner better form, and maybe shave a few tenths. But the ability to run fast is there or it’s not. Player A can sometimes beat Player B in a race every single time, and no amount of coaching will change that, even coaching from a self proclaimed miracle worker like yourself.

          • That’s not true. He’s not just talking about teaching someone to come out of the blocks better. You mention improving form, but then you shrug it off like it’s nothing. Some people are just terrible runners. Some of those people actually have speed. Once you correct over/under-striding, leg kick, lean and extraneous side movement you still have to practice with the proper form for a while before your musculature corrects and becomes proper in itself. Like Johnny Carson once said, “He’s got muscles where I don’t even have places.” Correcting form does the same thing. Poor form atrophies necessary musculature, and building it back up with correct form has proven to shave more than tenths off times for a lot of runners.

          • a lot of factors go into being a good running back but to my eye what separates folks are (1) holding onto the ball; (2) being able to pick up the blitz; (3) knowing how to read the cut back lanes

          • And if you shave a few tenths off of 10.72 (a few, like 3-4 tenths). That would make him amongst the fastest playing ball at the college level.

          • So why dont they hold a press conference to announce that OSU just signed one of the fastest kids in college football? What’s that? Oh right, because he’s a 2* kid who runs a 10.72 100…

And your saying if the “dumb” coaches knew even half of what YOU a-holes know, hell even our lineman would all of the sudden be running 4.5 40’s or what? GTFOH with that.

If you have all of the secrets to speed, how come nobody wants you to show them the ways? Why doesn’t anyone care what you have to say about it? (6 dudes on a.b. doesn’t count) I’m just guessing that at least part of the reason why not is because you’re completely full of sh*t.

          • “So why dont they hold a press conference to announce that OSU just signed one of the fastest kids in college football?”

Leave it to Duckie to not know an obvious NCAA rules violation.

“And your saying if the “dumb” coaches knew even half of what YOU a-holes know, hell even our lineman would all of the sudden be running 4.5 40?s or what? GTFOH with that.”

Straw man on fire! If this is an example of your logic (and it is based on the brilliance of all your posts combined), then you are one sorry intellect. GTFOH indeed. Or should it be GTFOOH?

            Putz.

        • Cooks’ high school junior year, he ran a wind aided 10.76 (+2.8) in the 100m and a 21.59 (+3.5) wind aided 200m.

Hawkins’ numbers, which was only from one meet that I could find were 10.72 (+.8) and 21.94 (+.7)

          • WA efforts (+2.0) just need to be thrown out. They say at those times the difference is about .12 for the 100m and .15 for the 200m. But too many runners have outliers well beyond those differences. The times you have for Hawkins is at the state meet where he placed second in both events. So he was more likely pushed by having to chase competition than he was by minimal wind. But it’s still an outlier from his other times. He also has a 10.95 and two 10.98. But that’s it for sub-11.

      • Yeah, signals some kind of entry problem. He might greyshirt, or he might have to go JC which means he would be recruited. I am just speculating on this, have not heard anything.

    • Wow…..offer from the Campbell Camels…..out there at Buies Creek, North Carolina….

….never heard of them before, so I had to google it.

  2. Last year’s class was supposed to be good, the year before a lot of young players got experience and that was supposed to pay off…somehow I don’t trust the coaching staff to make good on either claim. This class seems underwhelming, and it looks like the team is degrading in terms of both talent and depth.

  3. Just the next mini dude that will get lit up by D2 schools, and completely disappear against relevant competition. There are reasons nobody wanted this kid, and 2/3 of the rest of our class…. Just like every other year under this oppressive regime.

    • I think Hawkins is one. The gimmick started in October. Brennan was in Tennessee for the first weekend in November… and again for the state championship and an in-home a month later… and again for the east/west game and another in-home early this month.

Suffice it to say that Brennan really really likes the kid. He was offered preferred walk-on at Tennessee. If it was last year or next year Tennessee would offer him.

  4. Another visitor this weekend is Robert Olson from Eden Pairie, MN
Maybe beavergopher has something on him?

He is a 2 star OT. 6-5 260. He has offers from Yale, Air Force, Wyoming, and New Mexico. He did visit Kentucky last week, doesn’t show an offer, so maybe he is a preferred walk-on?

    • Whoa! A kid in Minnesota named Olson? What will they think of next?

He’s a two time 6A All-State first team OT for a team that has won the state title three years in a row. He was a finalist for Minnesota’s Mr. Football this year. He’s a 4.0 student. He has some work to do on his game (mostly strength). But I’m not sure why he’s being ignored by higher level schools.
      http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2084655/#

Went to take a look at Olson’s RB’s tape to see if I could see more, but I came away more impressed with the RB, Anthony Anderson. He was a DE on JV until midway through the 2012 season, so he hasn’t been a RB that long. He also doesn’t have great speed. But he has nice speed and agility. He can be a nice ATH looking at many positions at the next level. Still, I like his running style… and his size. Grades/test scores are an issue. It looks like he just needs a higher ACT to qualify. But we’ve all seen this story several times.
      http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1199478/#

        • I agree I thought his tape looked pretty good. Hard to a Mr Football finalist as an OL? He looks like he could put on good amount of weight, and he moves good. But he is a project of sorts. He does have interest from an SEC school so that shows some caliber of talent.

          • He is a plan B guy for the Gophers who will probably be offered a PWO spot. Great student and a pretty good player. Kill has made a point of trying to get a bunch of PWO’s for the O-Line with the promise of a scolly if they perform. There is a strange dynamic at his high school. The coach is Bud Grant’s kid, and even though Bud is a decorated U of M alum, his kid has been kind of antagonistict to multiple coaching regimes there. The district has chosen to keep expanding the school versus building a second HS and they have built dominant sports programs because of the number of kids that come out for the various teams. They have produced a number of D1 players, but for the most part they have been underwhelming. There is a thought that the players are more a product of a very good system. Goph’s are waiting on a local kid that also has an offer from FSU. If it appears he is going to blow us off, Olson may get a late offer. A cautionary note is they are bringing in an out of state OL prospect for an official FWIW.

    • Olson kid a really smart/nice kid but an awful football player…. If that description sounds familiar, it is because it can also be applied to our entire roster. Bad players lose games, and bad coaches lose games. Beavers are currently overflowing with both.

  5. Regarding the overall class: obviously there isn’t a lot of the star power that many are clamoring for. But I’m not down on it like you guys. It looks like there trying to address areas of concern, and grabbing both blue collar work horses that what they may lack in athleticism they make up for in intelligence, and very athletic kids who don’t have all the measurables. Also, it seems there are several guys that either new to the game or recently switched positions who would probably be rated higher if they figured it out a couple seasons ago.

One thing you can’t say is the coaches are working hard. They’re looking under every rock they can. Commits from Texas, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, California, Iowa, Arizona, Idaho, Tennessee. .. Offers out to kids in about every other state. I know this get’s thrown out as an excuse too much but be honest: if you at 18 were given a decision to play football on scholarship at OSU, ASU, or UCLA do you end up a Beaver.

    • I think you meant to say – “You can’t say . . . the coaches AREN’T working hard” – it’s poo but as I am commenting to agree with you, I thought I would smooth it out.

    • I’ll answer your question: you go to OSU if you sense (1) you’ll be able to play a lot, and (2) the team will play in and win big games. Which is to say, in the current context, you take a pass, but if you were a prospect back the day, say 1999-2005 (or so) you give it a shot.

  6. Hawkins doesn’t look particularly fast but he does show exceptional vision.

His ESPN profile shows a 4.55 40 which I trust more than other sites since they are recorded at the nike combine events.

He might just be slow in pads. All I can really say is that he could be a kick returner. Currently a development prospect. Might be a few years before we see him.

  7. I’m a little confused about the movement on the line for this game. It’s been OSU-2.5 since it opened. But the o/u was at 133 a couple hours ago and has since moved to 130. OSU has found some consistency Since Cooke and Moreland have been starting. And LMW has contributed in ways not seen from our back court or swings thus far. The one bad half against Cal is the only one in the last three games that went south. And that was on defense for the most part. 38 points in a half is decent, but there was one poor stretch on offense to go along with the poor D.. We’ve scored 81, 83 and 80 in the last three games. We’ve shot the ball well, but the amount of wasted possessions and missed gimmes has to be the trade-off for that. So I wouldn’t expect any less than 70 on a bad night.

So if the o/u is at 130 and 70 is a reasonable expectation for our offense, how is the line only -2.5?

      • look at the scores of the boogs conference gamess. If I were a betting man, which I am not, I’d take the under. They average 49 pts per game and 55 is the highest they’ve scored that did not include OT against CU. But with the way the beavs play D, who knows. They may drop 70 on us

          • did you watch the game? Or see the final score dipshit? If anyone took the under, they nailed it. Just as I said if I was a betting man I would. Why don’t you go back to pure-hate. You’ll fit in better over there with the other robots.

      • I think someone has already dropped a wad on the under. Three points in a couple hours is pretty steep. The way Wazzu played last week, it wouldn’t be a bad call. But you’re looking at a 75 – 50 game in that case.

        • I should have noted that the money lines have climbed pretty sharply while the o/u has dropped. This tells me nobody is putting cash on either team.

          • No kidding. I think I need to question every line from here on out.

Bone just tried to slow the game down too much in the second half. That and Johnson was spotted and shut down. I still didn’t see Wazzu scoring more than they did.

          • Johnson and DJ Shelton were really their only scoring options. Even with Lacy back it’s still playing 5 on 3 most nights. They are seriously outmanned most nights. Bone probably gets the axe after the season.

          • He’ll be lucky to last the whole season. His style of play does not do well now that hoops has gone away from Detroit Piston style thug play.

  8. OT but Jacob Coker the backup for Jameis Winston is planning on transferring to ‘Bama. Probably because he has been told he will start which would explain why Del Rio chose to transfer out even though he was the 2nd best QB on their roster this year. No idea if the Coker kid is any good though.

    • It’s surprising they’re 3-3. I thought they’d win 3 conference games all year.

Is this a winning being contagious so they give effort thing, or just playing bad teams?

      • Pac-12 is pretty weak after Arizona, Cal and maybe UCLA. Colorado lost their best guy to injury recently. Too bad we already played them. Beavs have enough big guys to get boards and draw fouls which will keep them in most games. If our bigs shot free throws well, I’d say the Beavs could be good for 10+ conference wins based on the remaining schedule, but since they cant consistently make the front end of a 1+1, I’m guessing around an 8 win max in league.

      • I think Eric Moreland can be a difference maker though it looks like he didn’t do much tonight. I’ll raise an eyebrow if they can beat the next two mediocore teams up (Huskies and Trojans) and at least be competive against the Bruins at home to finish the first half of the conference season at 5-4 minimum. Anything less and it’s really just not worth getting excited about.

      • I think it is effort is contagious and the upper class men are taking their keys from the effort of the younger players. Cook and LMW have been a spark and you must give Moreland some love on that as well. They are beginning to look decent. Maybe even enough to overcome the poor rotations and in game adjustments. Also helps to be playing the bottom-feeders.

      • I’ll have to start watching. Call it bandwagon if you want, but I couldn’t watch that OOC schedule…such bad basketball. I’ll tune in to see what’s changed. If anything…
We thought the football team was good while beating up on the bad conference opponents, too, so I’m not getting too excited, but 3-3 is surprising enough to pique my interest.

        • My attitude is smart. I got a lot of things done in life/hobbies/experiences, as you sat around and watched a bad basketball team win 3 games. If you’re in your 30s or 40s and wasting time on that you’re going to have some regrets on your deathbed. Sorry dude.

  9. Wow. Beav’s win Civil War and Goph’s win Border Battle against Fadgers in the same week.
That has not happened very often recently. Go Rodents!

  10. Workman like win. Nothing special about it. No real bad things.

Good follow up to the Oregon win. Next few games will be a test. UW, USC, ASU are the 50/50 games they need to win to take that real next step. I think about 5 teams from the pac12 will make the tourney. And a huge upset here and there will help.

Chances of them taking the next real step, about 20% IMO.

  11. Well, CR is talking up the Princton AD job, so here is his chance to ….. oh god I can hardly say it …..make us regret his LEAVING!

LOL …. I dont expect that, though. But go for it, CR…please.

    • Am I the only one who thinks the timing of Princeton AD article was kind of bizarre? CR just comes off of one of his bigger career wins and an article comes out about his future job possibilities (that don’t include coaching). If I was a coach and dead serious about turning around a program, I would have had a “no comment” at least during the season on this type of speculative story. Granted, CR loves to talk.

It makes me wonder if BDC has had the cajones to have given CR some kind of private ultimatum for achievement this season and CR is sending a signal?

      • I can’t convince myself that BDC has given any ultimatum. First, we are talking about BDC, and second, with the new practice facility and fresh involvement of some Beaver legends I think BDC is satisfied.

  12. Beavs win! What did they win? I hope this team can actually play competitively against the LA and AZ schools, but not counting on it. Maybe just a few less second half meltdowns and we might pick our heads up in March and be filling out our CBI brackets, and trying to figure out what f’ing channel that thing is on.

  13. So I go to Mexico for a couple weeks of fun and sun..and the Beavs turn the whole season around. They only win when I don’t pay any attention. Watch them lose to the Huskies now that I’m home. JB

    • Tell me more about Mexico. I wont be seeing any sun for at least a few months. Where’d you go? What did you do while there? Did you drink the water? I’m serious.

    • The jury’s still out on whether the season has been turned around yet. Remember that Coach Rob always has a two or three week period where the team does better than their season numbers would indicate. While they are more consistent over the past four games, they still don’t rise to that level in my mind. But if this is their baseline, then there’s some hope for even the near future.

I’ll buy it if we win four of our next six. 3-3 will be better than past seasons, but 4-2 will say we have made the “next step” in terms of rising in the conference. 2-4 or worse will just blow up this slight hope.

  14. We go to Zihautenejo every winter for a couple of weeks. Yo soy “el gringo con zapatas y cinta de blanco” or “el gente cabeza de hueso.” It’s very quite and relaxed. If you want night life Ixtapa is a short, cheap cab ride away.

Once you have been to Zihautenejo you are allowed to refer to it a Zihau or “Zay-wah” It’s clean and safe. We walk along the Playa Madera beach into town every night for dinner. On the way back, around 9-10 the only distractions are the local teens making out in the nooks and crannies.

All the good hotels supply filtered water in the rooms. We eat everything, every where without incident. There are lots of good to great restuarants. Enjoy a gourmet dinner for two for around $80 or grab something at beachfront for less that $20. Happy hour beers $1.50

We basically spend the day at the beachfront hotel. Wife reads in the shade while I spend most of the day bodyboarding in the surf. Occasionally check in with her for a snack, fish tacos, and a cold Pacifico beer.

There is a great flight on Alaska, connecting through LAX,that gets you to a hotel by 4:00, in time for a swim before dinner.

We have traveled to many beaches, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Bermunda all over the Caribean and the south of France. For a quick and relatively inexpensive beach blast, Zihau is right up there!

Check it out on TripAdvisor. JB

    • I second the Mexico recommendation. I’ve been all over as well, South America, Central America, Hawaii, etc. and have found my niche in Mazatlan. Easy connections from PDX to PHX to Mazatlan with a 2:00 pm same day arrival time. Drop my bags on the condo floor and head for the bar and beach. Have a place at Costa Bonita, 1/2 mile walk up the beach to Playa Bruja restaurant, (the best) or a ten minute bus ride to the Golden Zone for shopping and tourist things.

Our water is filtered in the resort, and we drink bottled water or Pacifico in the restaurants. Eat whatever we want to and have never been sick. Mazatlan is also very safe. I have never felt threatened or unsafe at all, any time. Great beaches for boogie boarding, decent, (but not outstanding anymore) fishing, and really nice people.

Two weeks a year…. Yo soy el Americano feo…

“You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific Ocean…They say it has no memory.” – Andy Dufrense

      • Yeah….agree totally on the tourist sanctuaries. Beautiful, safe, a lot of fun. But also traveled in outback Mexico and its…..hazardous…..lol.

    • Sweet, sounds awesome. I’ve only been to Cabo (which was likable but had a little too much of the Spring Break crowd) and Cozumel, which I’d go to again. Never felt unsafe in either place and we’ve rented cars to go off the beaten path with no problems.

My wife and I were eying a place in Ixtapa on Trip Adviser that looked nice but were hesitant to go because we don’t know anybody else who had been there. I want to make a trip to Playa Del Carmen someday too, mostly for the ruins, but the beaches there look amazing too.

Ixtapa sounds desirable though, for the flight alone. Flights to the Riviera Maya from Portland can eat up a full day each way because of layovers.

Curious though, “you are the white man with shoes and white ribbon?” I get the bonehead part. My Spanish is rusty, so that is what I’m reading. What does cinta translate to?

        • I’ve always used “cinturon” for belt, por ejemplo, “cinturon de seguridad” (seat belt) but there are all kinds of Spanglish and different translations out there. Mexicans don’t care, they appreciate the effort to speak their language.

      • I’ve been to most of the tourist destinations in Mexico and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo is my favorite. You get two vacations in one because the towns are right next to each other but totally different.

It doesn’t have the cache of Cancun or Cabo but a much better trip, in my opinion.

        • You guys are a bunch of wimps, I go to Nogales with my uncle every two years, stay in a crappy hotel and get my wallet stolen and ass kicked in by Federales for drinking Tecates illegally on the sidewalk. Now that’s Mexico! Oh and I get a bottle of Jack Daniels for $10.

    • Not crazy about having the player’s name on the back. I think SC football has the right idea in going with only numbers.
As Casey says, “players win games, teams win championships”
