Great finish and I don’t feel bad for ucla but no way did Brandt draw a charge with 15 secs left. He was clearly moving. Bad calls both ways for sure but the beavs got the bad call they needed to win.
That was actually a decent call. And it made up for Alford grabbing LMW from behind and pulling him to the ground when LMW had a sure O board on the other end.
The rule for charging when the defender is moving applies to when the ball handler is making a normal move–rising to shoot a lay-up or trying to dribble around the defender. Adams made a bad mistake by putting his shoulder down and accelerating into the hit. If he would have gone up with the ball he would have got the call. Angus got the call because he maintained the integrity of his position by not including his arms and legs in the contact and remaining upright. Adams still had a play to avoid Angus or to go up and take contact, but he chose to make an out of control hit instead. The call should always go to the player who is demonstrating controlled play.

Had the FUCLA player not lowered the shoulder and just gone up with the shot even if he initiated the contact, then a block would have been the correct call. But with these Pac-12 refs you just never know and why I thought it could have gone either way.
They kind of won in spite of Roberto today.. Lots of standing around on his part, sloppy passes all through out the game. Two missed free throws and an awful in bounds pass in crunch time. UCLA had him out of rhythm. Nice to see others step up.
Cooke is the pure, “normal” outsider shooter I’ve been bitching about needing for the last few years. None of Roberto’s set shots or Starks fall back threes. Just nice form on open looks and surprisingly there is now some consistency. It also took CR long enough to realize Barton is worth about 5 minutes a game.

1) I agree Ice must have a good arm, mainly because it seemed Esposito was pretty good in that aspect of the game. BTW I’ll be pleasantly surprised if either Ice or Espo builds the kind of record JRod did in both throwing out base runners and blocking the plate. Additionally, he was a heck of a field general, IMHO.
2) What’s the story with new rules regarding blocking the plate? Do they apply to the college game? Are they effective this year?
MLB rules are actually catching up with NCAA rules on this one. NCAA rules say that a runner can make contact with a fielder who has possession of the ball and is in the path of the runner. But the runner needs to make an attempt to reach the base, and when a runner initiates contact above the waist it is not considered making an attempt to reach the base.
If the defender does not have possession of the ball, then he is impeding the runner’s path.
The thing about Jake “blocking” the plate was that he was very good at putting a leg out in order to force the runner to take a wider angle at the plate. He was rarely knocked off that leg by contact due to his strength. If Ice can learn to leverage that position as well, then size isn’t a huge thing. But he can be swept off by legal contact if he’s lighter than he should be.
Disappointing return on investment for Uncle Phil this year. Near Civil War loss and Alamo Bowl against a depleted Texas team, followed by likely no post season for basketball and baseball.
Considering football was crowning themselves national championship contenders all year, and basketball was projected to be a tourney team but sits at 9th in the Pac, and baseball just lost one of their top 3 pitchers before the season starts, I’d say its been a bit of a downer year for UO.
When’s the last time a conference sent their 9th place team to the big dance?
Off the top of my head… Big East sent UCONN at #9. Of course, winning the conference tourney helped, but they also sent Nova and Marquette as the 10th and 11th place teams in the conference.

Cooks to Seattle is fun, but if I were Seattle, I’d get Seastrunk at the end of Rd 1. Someday the Beast (Lynch) is going to get injured, and Seastrunk seems like a viable long-run threat. Then they could get Cooks later, moving up to trade. I think Cooks would be better than Tate, a nice compliment to Kearse and Harvin (who seems injury prone).
Lache is a smaller back (skinny) and seems very fragile himself. Don’t think he ends up being more then a kick returner, and even at that not sure how long he’ll hold up to NFL hits. Cooks has a bigger upside IMO. If he ends up a Hawk I’ll go nuts. I’ve seen projections he may end up a 9er too. They might be trying to upgrade their mediocre receiving core.
I think the NCAA tournament would set them up for failure. I’d rather see them in the NIT and win at least a couple. Not saying they’ll have that opportunity even, just a thought.

Fisiiahi is the best player out of Hawai’i by far. You talk to anyone in that state following football, and they don’t hesitate. The kid going to Wazzu is probably the second best, and Williams would likely be the third. Those three are football players who are more polished than Vakameilalo. But the talk is that Vakameilalo has the most potential because his strength and athleticism are natural, farm boy type attributes.
Has anyone here ever heard of Hawai’i kids having problems making it academically… more so than any other state? That was one wholesale shit claim. Maybe OSU goes after marginal students who are great athletes because other schools have a better litter to pick from and don’t have to wait until two weeks before signing day to see if their kid is good to go? I wonder if this topic has ever been broached anywhere.
270 pounds is almost ideal for Olinemen who are going to red shirt (and even DTs if their skills warrant D1 consideration). It’s not unnatural for a kid with a good frame to add 20 to 30 pounds in a year at school. 250# and less is just absurd. 20 to 30 pounds is normal for that age. But putting on good weight beyond that is hard unless certain chemical enhancements occur. If I’m a coach, I like that 6’5-6″ 270# smart kid for my Oline because I know his weight is natural and I can manage it from here on out. I think that kind of kid should be about 40-50% of your Oline class every year. I loved Andrews, Weinreich and Bays supplemented by Mitchell, Eldridge and some kid named Isaac. You have room for development and can take hits like attrition and injury if you have an Oline class like this every year (4-6 kids). It’s not like we haven’t done it before, so I don’t know why we don’t have that class every year. Practice makes perfect. Spot work every other or third year makes for this kind of excuse for inconsistent recruiting.
Reading Eggers’ article the other day, I figured Moore would be the second TE in the class with Knight. That would make the most sense. It’s an old Tom Osborne method. Get an underweight Olineman with great athleticism to be your blocking TE.
And this is the second time I’ve seen Demarlon Morris’ name spelled incorrectly.
BTW, I don’t know if there’s any significant difference between Rivals’ ratings and Scouts’, but I see Scout has about 19 of OSU’s commitments as 3*, eight as 2*. I’ve generally been of the opinion that a well-coached OSU team with 3* talent could get to the rose bowl, and it seems that my “impressions” of this class are lower than Scouts. Seems like a lot of developmental prospects, but I’m not sure if that’s a luxury OSU can afford unless they are incredibly fortunate and avoid injuries.
I haven’t watched a lot of film on this class and am looking forward to more informed opinions from individuals on this site when the letters are in.

Jake was probably the same height or thereabout. But he was a solid 200# and built like a fireplug.

It’s unlike Connor (from the limited work I’ve seen) to write such a jumbled mess with no corroboration. He did it yesterday too when he wrote that Crawford’s commitment was broken by Harris Ross on twitter when that was obviously not true.
Fisiiahi is the best player out of Hawai’i by far. You talk to anyone in that state following football, and they don’t hesitate. The kid going to Wazzu is probably the second best, and Williams would likely be the third. Those three are football players who are more polished than Vakameilalo. But the talk is that Vakameilalo has the most potential because his strength and athleticism are natural, farm boy type attributes.
Has anyone here ever heard of Hawai’i kids having problems making it academically… more so than any other state? That was one wholesale shit claim. Maybe OSU goes after marginal students who are great athletes because other schools have a better litter to pick from and don’t have to wait until two weeks before signing day to see if their kid is good to go? I wonder if this topic has ever been broached anywhere.
270 pounds is almost ideal for Olinemen who are going to red shirt (and even DTs if their skills warrant D1 consideration). It’s not unnatural for a kid with a good frame to add 20 to 30 pounds in a year at school. 250# and less is just absurd. 20 to 30 pounds is normal for that age. But putting on good weight beyond that is hard unless certain chemical enhancements occur. If I’m a coach, I like that 6’5-6″ 270# smart kid for my Oline because I know his weight is natural and I can manage it from here on out. I think that kind of kid should be about 40-50% of your Oline class every year. I loved Andrews, Weinreich and Bays supplemented by Mitchell, Eldridge and some kid named Isaac. You have room for development and can take hits like attrition and injury if you have an Oline class like this every year (4-6 kids). It’s not like we haven’t done it before, so I don’t know why we don’t have that class every year. Practice makes perfect. Spot work every other or third year makes for this kind of excuse for inconsistent recruiting.
Reading Eggers’ article the other day, I figured Moore would be the second TE in the class with Knight. That would make the most sense. It’s an old Tom Osborne method. Get an underweight Olineman with great athleticism to be your blocking TE.
And this is the second time I’ve seen Demarlon Morris’ name spelled incorrectly.

BTW, I don’t know if there’s any significant difference between Rivals’ ratings and Scouts’, but I see Scout has about 19 of OSU’s commitments as 3*, eight as 2*. I’ve generally been of the opinion that a well-coached OSU team with 3* talent could get to the rose bowl, and it seems that my “impressions” of this class are lower than Scouts. Seems like a lot of developmental prospects, but I’m not sure if that’s a luxury OSU can afford unless they are incredibly fortunate and avoid injuries.
I haven’t watched a lot of film on this class and am looking forward to more informed opinions from individuals on this site when the letters are in.
