Angie Machado's Giant Killer Award

0

The following list was compiled and published by rivals.com and beaverblitz’s Angie Machado. The idea behind this award is to acknowledge, every Sunday, the best defensive player from the previous game. The complete list can be found here (if you have a membership). If you don’t have a membership, I will summarized Angie’s perception of this weekend’s defensive performance:

1. Keaton Kristick

2. Kevin Frahm

3. Lance Mitchell

4. Keith Pankey

5. Tim Clark

Keaton Kristick? Really?

Angie, did you watch the game or are you simply hyping Kristick so he makes All-Pac 10? Or maybe you just think he’s cute.

Anyway, time for some male perspective: Lance Mitchell was the only playmaker on the defense. Dude forced a huge fumble as UNLV were driving inside the red zone, and also jumped in front of a pass for an INT. Both plays stalled drives.  Conversely, Keaton Kristick had eight tackles and recovered Mitchell’s forced fumble. That’s not a bad game by any stretch, but his tackles were all standard procedure and were not game changing plays.

The methodology behind this award is ridiculous. A tackle, no matter where it occurs on the field or at what juncture of the game, equals a point, and 3 of these tackles are equal to a turnover. Why? I don’t know. It’s arbitrary and we just have to accept it. Mensa and NASA level stuff right there folks.

Tim Clark, 5th best defender on Saturday. Interesting. Why because he made 7 tackles after getting torched for a couple hundred yards? Keith Pankey, 4th? Angie, were you compiling a list of worst defenders and simply confused the two?

Angie, stop embarrassing Beaver Nation with your drivel and hype. You’re the same person who said, “Ryan McCants is the second coming of Steven Jackson” after last year’s spring camp. Now you have a love affair with Kristick. Enough with the hype. Just report what the players are, not what you wish them to be. Thank you.

UNLV Prediction

34-26, Beavs.

This could easily swing, though, and I have no confidence in the pick. Wouldn’t put a dime on it. If the Beavs get the same pass rush they did vs Portland State and the CBs play the same, this is a sure loss. This pick is banking Banker tightens things up. Banker is overrated, so don’t bank on it.

PAC 10: Grading Week 1

0

1. Cal–Played a BCS school and beat them by 40. ’nuff said.

2. USC–They are simply bigger, stronger, and faster than your team. Men amongst boys.

3. Washington–They’re going to be good this year. If we played these guys yesterday we’d be licking wounds this morning.

4. Arizona State–Shaky QB play, but the defense looks strong.

5. Stanford–Another school that played a BCS opponent. Andrew Luck is a huge upgrade over Pritchard.  The skill positions are beginning to look dangerous.

6. Oregon State–No pass rush to an otherwise solid, if not deep, team. Foreboding weakness for Pac-10 play.

7. Arizona–Central Michigan is a respectable opponent. Arizona controlled the game with the ground game, something they’re expected to do a lot of this year.

8. UCLA–I couldn’t watch more than a minute of this game. Picked away at SDSU, but their offense is not very good.

9. Washington State–Look improved, but the talent deficiency was too much of a hurdle. Played with spirit and pride in defeat.

10. Oregon–A bad offensive line, a lack of depth at RB, and a coach who lost control of his team after one weem. With the disablement of a QB or two looming, this has the making of a nightmare season.

Game Day Observations

0

1.  The defense is getting no pass rush. This was more disconcerting than the CB play. Gabe Miller, a converted TE, looks like our best DE.

2. Offensive line looks OK. Better pass blocking than run blocking.

3. Krebs should never see the field–dude is stiff as wood and got juked by a DII QB.

4. Wheaton will one day be as good as Dez Bryant. Same frame and speed. On a similar note, Halahuni needs more balls his way.

5. Poyer needs to see the field more. He’s better than Cameron Collins.

6. Collins is bulky and stiff. Was real high on this guy when he signed, but I’d rather see Poyer in there.

7. T. Kavanaugh shouldn’t be returning punts. I hope that was just to avoid injuries in game 1…against Pac-10 competition we need a game breaker.

8. Katz is going to be a great QB. Surprised he didn’t have any other offers besides Air Force.

9. Jovan Stevenson is not a viable backup. He has no speed, pretty much a one move and fall to the ground kind of back. Use him to spell Quiz, throw a block, and run out the clock, but that’s it. We literally don’t have a Pac-10 RB after Quiz. Better cross our fingers.

10. FSN has terrible coverage. They had an entire year to move towards HD and hire better producers. What a failure.

Go Beavs.

Remember When Our Offense Portended Prolific?

0
In the spring game, and early in fall camp, Canfield was tossing balls around like Madden ‘98 on the rookie level. Really, the offense appeared prolific. As we break camp and head into a week 1 match up with the mighty Vikings of Portland State, it seems the appropriate time to reflect on the team that might have been versus the team that is. On offense, what might have been, but are missing for one reason or another:

1. Markus Wheaton–High 3-star prospect (who should have been a 4) and fastest player on the team.
2. Ryan Pohl–Athletic 3 star guard from Hawaii who has looked dominating at times.
3. Darrel Catchings–3 star WR who looked unstoppable in the spring game and early camp.

What is:

1. Damola Adeniji– 0 star recruit. Uses body well, but is not a game breaker in any sense of the word.
2. Grant Johnson–0 star walk-on. Really dislike Riley’s move in starting this guy over a great talent in Pohl.
3. Casey Kjos– 2 star recruit. How is Bishop, who is eons more dynamic, not starting here?

Beaver recruitniks love to say, “stars don’t matter!”, but we lost 7 stars on our offense, and suddenly it doesn’t portend so prolific. Think about that.
