I actually had to look up the win this morning to confirm I didn’t dream that.
General thread until the weekend; then we’ll do the same with baseball and basketball in one.
How is this our first Sweet 16 since ’75? I thought we were good and the “Orange Express” for decades…? So even when we were “good” under Miller we weren’t actually good?
Go Beavs.
First, and second Ralph went to elite 8, and lost to Georgetown that had Patrick Ewing
Yes, that year was officially vacated because a few players sold their complimentary tickets.
I was wondering about the reason. 80, 81, and 82 were all vacated. Same reason for all three?
https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1876&dat=19840515&id=VEMsAAAAIBAJ&sjid=QM4EAAAAIBAJ&pg=6945,4056235&hl=en
Here’s the article (right above “Soviets Blame Reagan”). It was a multi-year thing. “They primarily involved the selling of complimentary tickets, loans to athletes and providing cars and transportation to players and their families.”
Officially, staff involvement was minimal and they didn’t appear to know they were breaking rules. Sounds shady to me. Another product of the Dee Andros administration.
I bet Jack would know the whole story.
Didn’t they get their tourney win over Middle Tenn in the ’70s vacated or something because Lonnie Shelton had an agent?
We like Tinkle!!!
Loyola’s pregame rally
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez6wfJWVCeI
Wow, Nike-Iowa is 56-46…at halftime.
That game was never close after the first half. Seedings are a joke this year.
I’m guessing Altman saw that he had an advantage with fresh legs and capitalized on that by playing fast-paced.
In the ESPN game recap, they mentioned that the Ducks lost in the Pac 12 tournament title game. Weird.
The announcers said during our game last night that we beat them in the title game, too. It’s baffling how little these basketball guys know about the conference.
Flat earthers can’t see past the rockies
Did you notice that it took the announcers a long time to pick up that Calloo had played for Okst? It sounded the producer found out and finally gave them that fact. I’m pretty sure they had no clue going into the game.
I’m fine and dandy with Nike also in 16. It forces the flat earthers whom can’t see past the Rockies into recognizing that the Oregon State ducks are not an actual team.
I don’t think this helps any. One of the commentators of our game against Tennessee called us the Oregon State Ducks after we won. He literally watched the Beavers play an entire game, then proceeded to call them the Ducks. The Nike/Disney brainwash machine is formidable.
It is great seeing P-12 success making the “experts” look like idiots, but the Duck bandwagon has already started. I was listening to ESPN radio and they were gushing about the Quacks having the offense to challenge Gonzaga. I was screaming at the radio that those fuckers were stopped cold by the Beavs! I’m ready for Duckie to lose next round or else the championship talk is going to increase in volume.
Loyola will be another tough game. They execute at a high level and don’t give up easy baskets. There style is similar to how we’ve played for past month. That said, athletically we might have the edge and I don’t expect they’ll be able to apply the same amount of pressure that Tennessee and Okie state did successfully. I think the game will be close… back and forth. They are really good at executing and closing out close games. We need to shoot high percentage and not settle for outside shots. It may be tough for Silva to stay out of foul trouble. They have knack to drawing fouls and exploiting those in foul trouble. If both teams play their best, Beavs win. Loyola has lower ceiling but is more consistent and battle tested. Surprised to see the 7 point spread. It’s a pick em game IMO. Btw, noticed Hunt is ok and expected to play
Have you heard anything about why Andela did not play against Okst?
He played for the Ducks..
Here’s your answer
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2021/03/oregon-states-rodrigue-andela-didnt-play-against-oklahoma-state-because-of-coachs-decision-hes-ready-for-sweet-16.html
No but good question. I was wondering the same. Maybe it was just a better match up for tucker and not enough minutes to get him in. Seems he’ll be key against Loyola so hope he’s not hurt.
Looking at some recaps, video and stats on Loyola, they only had 4 losses… Indiana state, Wisconsin, Richmond and Drake. They lost to Drake 51-50 after beating them by 27 in previous game. Seemed like Drake slowed it up and packed it in daring Loyola to shoot from the outside. The other 3 games they gave up 75, 76, and 77 points which is the 3 highest point totals they gave up all year. Indiana St is by far their worst lost and they just pounded them physicality… same with Wisconsin. Richmond just out shot them. Seems if we can rotate bigs like Andela, Tucker, and Silva and play a physical style while scoring 70+, it would be the winning formula.
Coaches decision regarding andela, rumor that altman is jockeying for Indiana job
Seems odd, but we can’t complain about the results. Andela looks like a hard-working SOB to me every time he’s out there, can’t believe he wasn’t worth 5-10 minutes. I noticed Silva played 31, he must be in better shape now, certainly more skilled offensively. He keeps it going, he’s going to be a force next season.
Colorado struggling to score against FSU, down 28-23 with 17 minutes left in the game.
Oregon State went 4-5 yesterday. Volley ball lost to the ducks but both basketball teams, softball and baseball all won.
4-1?
4/5?
80%?
I saw that the pac 12 has earned 19.8 million so far from the tournament. Not too shabby. I have a hard time rooting for some of the teams especially the sucks but I guess it looks good for the conference and obviously pays if they keep winning.
Just wait until you see how nice the new PAC-12 offices are going to be!
Stupid Colorado. Not even a real Pac10 team anyways.
2nd in the PAC 12….
USC kicking the shit out of Kansas
Hopefully they are this hot from 3 next game
Arkansas women’s bounced in first round by 13 seed. Don’t see that often on the women’s side.
They’re a bunch of Hogs anyway…rather watch the Beavers..
Destiny Slocum’s team, right? Karma!
Someone posted in the other thread that she scored 2 point, total.
That was me. A dud ending……‘twas her destiny I guess.
She probably regrets now, leaving the Beavs. Of course we no longer need her services!
Krutwig is a 33 year old plumber.
Hmm, an uninspired article about reseeding the sweet 16. I somewhat agree with ours, but the reasoning is as bad as calling us the oregon state ducks. We just made some 3s apparently.
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/31116402/reseeding-men-march-madness-2021-field-sweet-16
The dumb thing is, he mentions our defense, but then ignores it and just says “nah, they’re getting lucky from 3.”
Funny, still very little respect for the PAC12. 4 teams in the Sweet 16 but the analysts were right all along. I saw another article talking about the Big10 and how the analysts were right all season that they were the best conference it just was unfortunate that they under-performed in the tournament. If there ever was a year that they could have gracefully said that they got it wrong because the conferences didn’t play each other, this is it. But they decide to keep with their narrative that basketball gets worse the farther west you go.
As someone who defended Larry Scott to some extent – he’s not responsible for the football teams losing, which led to them being ignored by the networks – I do find it hilarious that the conference had it’s best opening Tourney rounds in YEARS as soon as he was shown the door. Particularly since not much was expected from the conference this season – just two teams in the lower rungs of the preseason Top 25. Of course, when that poll was taken, Scott hadn’t been told he wasn’t getting renewed yet.
MBB plays at 2:40pm EST on Friday

PAC takes over tournament:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2021/03/23/pac-12-takes-over-mens-ncaa-tournament/6960713002/
“The answer to the question about which league has the biggest representation in the Sweet 16 is the Pac-12 with four. Making the success even more impressive is the league’s batting average, with only five teams receiving bids.”
…
The only thing stopping all four teams from reaching the Elite Eight? Oregon and USC are in the same half of the West Regional. The Ducks and Trojans will play Saturday in an unfortunate scheduling quirk. Typically, conference teams avoid each other before the regional finals.
As much as I hate Oregon and USC I would rather all Pac-12 teams play other conference teams so all have a chance to advance. Better look for the PAC. Go Beavs! It is Tinkle Time!
At this point, big $$ coming back to the Pac for this – hopefully, it won’t all go to pay off Scott’s golden parachute package.
I’m still not a big believer that Wayne Tinkle can create a sustainable program that does this consistently rather than occasionally being the overachieving feel good story. However, as I said on this blog prior to this run, the coaching staff is good. They have brought a number of these players along. Roman Silva was not a Div 1 basketball talent when he got here and now he is more than serviceable as a big. Zack R. was a bit of a liability when he got to OS, but with the lack of depth he played quite a bit and has become a glue guy that provides consistent D and some clutch scoring especially when closing out games. Ethan has even gotten better and is the reason we have been so successful at closing out games. The talent that is on the roster now is significantly better than it was when Tinkle got here. The staff has done a very good job of getting these guys mentally prepared for these games and it has been exceedingly entertaining.
This program is middle of the road now. We are no longer at the bottom of the PAC12 and we can now have special moments like this because of the positives. The negatives still exist that I don’t think Tinkle will ever have Scott Rueck type success in building the program but at least now an up and coming Mid-Major coach would not look at the Beaver job as a career ender. A great day to be a Beaver and I’m interested to see where the AD goes with Tinkle in the next few years now that we’ve gotten a taste of the good life. Is a good program enough or are we ready to try for more?
It will be telling to see if WT can build on the success of this year; or, do we see another slump like what happened after his first year at OSU?
Despite what talking heads view as a weak conference, sustained success is difficult in the Pac. If WT can make it to tournament time regularly with NIT the floor and deep tourney run the ceiling, I’d be ok with that.
IIRC, his third year collapse was basically an injury problem, right? Every other year has been pretty consistent.
Pretty consistent, with good stretches and wtf moments; no NIT or tourney runs; players leaving before their eligibility is done.
I’d like to see him build on this year, where every year the NIT is expected and occasional tourney runs are in the mix.
I agree with OJ, consistent with no post season is not where it needs to be. Tinkle seems to be a good human and believer in doing things the right way, so I would love to see the program use this as a springboard to something beyond where it has been.
I was thinking about this yesterday seeing the P12 dominate the tournament: once ASU is back to full strength and Arizona is done with sanctions, this is going to be a really tough conference. It’s feasible that we could be like Colorado and always win 10 or 11 conference games, which isn’t too far off from where Tinkle had us during the Sons Years. That would put us at least near on the tournament bubble every year.
If Altman does leave for Indiana, that makes Nike a bit of a wild card, but Arizona, ASU, UCLA, and probably USC are always going to have good recruiting success. They all have good coaches. Colorado has been consistent under Boyle, and the talent is there in Seattle for UW if they can find the right coach.
Stepping back and looking at personnel under Tinkle, IF you buy the “sons were the problem” argument, Tinkle’s recruiting has been pretty good, but retention has been the issue so with that part of the equation gone, our depth should improve. That should be worth another 1-2 conference wins per year.
Hope ZR has a more productive game on Saturday than he did against the cowboys. A starting senior can not disappear like he did. 0 points, 0 assists and 1 rebound.
Missed two wide open threes with no defender within 10 feet of him. Those are shots he can’t afford to miss if the team wants to advance to the Elite Eight.
That’s the big question. Is this a one time thing or the beginning of a run?
But everyone projects directionally. When things are going good, the future always looks bright. Case study should be UW. New coach comes in, wins 20 games makes NIT. Next year wins conference reg season and makes ncaa. Signs two eventual first round picks. Signs huge 6 year extension that offseason. Since then two bottom of the conference finishes. No good recruits coming in. Now they can’t make a change without paying a 12 million dollar buyout and he gets a raise every year. Times of despair at uw with no light in the tunnel.
I definitely agree with the concerns. Can Tinkle raise his ceiling? We want to be a consistent threat to make the tourney. Each year has some good highs but the lows are really low that cost the team any shot. He’s earned an extension. Hopefully the Beavs don’t over do it like uw.
Again, I think your answer to this question hinges on if you believe the “sons were the problem” argument. We’ve heard anonymously from opposing coaches and from Tinkle himself that the sons were an obstacle in recruiting and getting buy-in from players.
What is Tinkle’s track record without Tres as the team leader?
Montana- annual conference contender, three championships in seven years
OSU 2014-2015- Took a team picked to finish last and finished 7th (declined CBI invite)
OSU 2015-2016- Performed to expectation, finishing 6th and making tournament
OSU 2020-2021- Took a team picked to finish last and finished 6th, then won the conference tourney and beat a bunch of 5-star recruits along the way
That looks to me like a guy that can at least keep us on the bubble. This tournament run is a bit of an anomaly, but I think we’d all be okay with “deep NCAA tourney run” as a ceiling.
The negative recruiting had to be insane but with Stewart in as asst coach, there seems to have been a change in recruiting. Seems to be able cast a wider net and identify quality transfers. This run should help them with high school recruits.
Someone has a lot of TX connections. We’ve pulled quite a few guys out of there recently (Tucker, Davis, and Davis come to mind, and we’ve offered a few others for ’22).
Hopefully Tinkle and co. will get more guys reaching out to them after this run. The staff seems to still be pushing hard for a ’22 big man.
Sounds like F King is going to resign.
Resigned effective April 1st
Called it! No severance hopefully and the football stadium donor doesn’t back out.
Everyone is playing the blame game now. Lsu blaming Alexander. Alexander blaming the law firm report, etc.
I would have to guess Ed Ray steps in as interim.
What’s Pat Casey up to?
Yes please!
Pat Casey would be a terrible President IMO. I am not even sure he’d be a great AD.
He’s going to face public backlash over the Heimlich ordeal if he’s appointed president, even if it’s not justified.
It’s probably one reason why he stepped down from begin a head coach.
Wow. April Fools…..
Can the AD leave next?
We F King hardly knew ya………..and don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.
His goose was cooked when the law firm that he said didn’t do a completely fair job let the world know that Alexander had numerous opportunities to “set the record straight” and chose not to do it. I don’t don’t that the law firm was tasked at blaming the problem with those no longer on campus – but that was a rookie move only slightly less dumb than Les saying that if the report was released it would “ruin his reputation.”
I’ll also be curious to see if OSU can find a school president that hasn’t had something like this come across their desk at some point, whether involving a coach, some student or whatnot.
Always found major university presidents to be an interesting breed. They’re academics by training, but must be adept at fundraising and pretty much be a politician in order to succeed. And I imagine dealing with the on-campus politics is about as tough as the off-campus politics.
I see a lot of comparing Tinkle to Rueck in coaching abilities and recruiting. But I would venture to say it isn’t a fair comparison.
Rueck is riding a winning program which leads to better recruits, which leads to a winning program. Plus, if I had to guess, I would would say the talent pool of recruits for WBB is much more shallow then for MBB recruits country-wide. This probably leads to the better WBB teams getting the better recruits leaving a larger drop-off in talent for the other teams to recruit from out there.
Tinkle stepped into a losing program which leads to harder recruiting, which makes it harder to get a winning team. Even though the talent pool for MBB recruits might be larger in the country there are way more MBB teams competing for recruits. So that makes it harder to get those elite recruits that are a click above the recruits going to the big brand schools.
Have I always loved Tinkle Time… no. But I got to give the man props as he seems to be doing it against the odds. The odds do not favor Tinkle but the odds do favor Rueck. – Deep thoughts by BeaverBill.
Keep in mind, too, that the women’s program was in bad shape when Rueck took over in 2009. There is a feedback loop of winning leads to good recruiting, but the coach has to prove that they can develop players into winners. That’s what Rueck has done successfully.
Tinkle still has not proven that he can develop point guards, though he has proven that he can develop centers. OSU can regularly contend for NCAA berths if they have a point guard that can break a press, a center that can get to the rim and make midrange shots, and tenacious defense.
Elite schools want 7 footers who can make three pointers, which is nice to have, but that isn’t required to win at the D1 level and make tourney runs. Loyola proves this point.
To say Rueck took over a struggling program is a huge understatement. Rueck had open tryouts his first year or two to even have enough players to practice since all of the girls left the program with the abusive previous coach. That being said, I think the WBB and MBB are extremely hard to compare since when you bring in a 5* in WBB you get them for 4 years and can keep the pipeline flowing with high recruits. However, in MBB 5* recruits are only 1 year players and you have to continually refresh if you are that type of program. OS MBB is the type of program that needs to get lower 4*/upper 3* recruits from high school and fill in gaps with guys like Alitishe who are a bit raw with tremendous upside.
Rueck has proven that he is elite and shattered the myth that you can’t have an elite program at a school without an airport. I don’t think Tinkle has that type of ceiling – which is the only comparison that I would do with those two.
The practice facility has helped out a lot. Especially for womens team. Very few womens teams have dedicated courts. Most have to share with men’s or the arena with other teams. All indoor sports had to share Gill in the past and that was a big issue.
OSU on par or better than most in the country. Not saying it’s a coincidence but the facility opened in summer 2013. Rueck made the tourney for the first time that season.
Sparky made a good point, the disaster that was WBB was much worse than what Tinkle walked into.
Bill, your mention of the practice facility got me thinking about Rueck’s ability to “market” his team. He seems to do a very good job of involving and showing appreciation for fans of his squad. Is that just the kind of young women he has? Refresh my memory, please, how involved was Rueck in raising funds for that practice facility?
And don’t forget that the Good Gals play later today on ESPN at 4 o’clock Pacific. The game against South Carolina is the third time the teams have met. “Series” stands at 1-1, in 2018 the underappreciated Taya scored 14.
I think it was mostly CR that did the fundraising. No idea who designed it but whoever decided to have a separate men’s and women’s court was very smart.
Thanks, figured Rueck was too new to have had much involvement.
Rueck has certainly helped fundraise for upgrades in the locker rooms at gill since.
Tinkle didn’t walk into a disaster, I think the media thought it was going to be a shit show because nobody knew the talent of GP-2. CR had under-achieved once again the previous season with a senior-laden roster that was supposed to battle in the upper half of the league. WT had some pieces to work with, especially with what he had in GP-2.
I think the bkstball practice facility is gorgeous – As I recall, the 2-story idea belongs to Craig Robinson and it was his insistence that it needed to be built. I wonder if any insomniac basketball players practice at 2 a.m.
Steven Nelson cut by the Steelers.

Things starting to go south for the ladies..
Cocks pounding the Beavers, so to speak…
Second quarter was pretty rough. 5 points won’t get it done.
9 TO’s, always a problem to some degree for Beavs, 11% 3 pt shooting can’t negate that.
Is the low 3pt % due to defense, cold shooting, bit of both?
Rueck still struggling w/pressure and TOS?
Tenacious D by the cocks seemed to have the Good Gals off their game.
Live by the Three…………
Usually it’s tenacious defense of Beavers against cocks…..
Win some, lose some. Shaping up to be a sucky day to be a Beaver. Baseball just gave up 4 runs to Santa Clara in the top of the first! WTF? Well, they can’t take last Sunday away from me!
Who is pitching?
Frish for 1 inning, Sebby comes out for 2nd
Sheesh, 1 E and 1 WP in the t1 and the visitors from Santa Clara are up 4-0 before Beavs come up.
No Casey in the lineup.
Gretler 2 RBI double ties it at 4, still in the b2.
Very good camera work, two different replay angles; stream has improved since first game.
Ouch… three run homer given up by Verberg.
Ouch… Warren totally befuddled on a 2 RBI fielders choice for the second out in the b4. Warren thinks maybe the out wasn’t called but doesn’t have presence of mind to note that the runner has gone to the dugout.
Anyway, 7-7, on to the t5
If there is a positive in a 10-9 loss, it may be AJ Lattery. Big freshman, he looks like a strike thrower who could be very good. Maybe a larger version of Mulholland?
I thought they were going to pull that one out when they had two on and no outs in b9.
At least they’re producing runs too. If this team can score 5 or more runs regularly they should win most games.
I’m thinking WBB is going to be pretty good the next 3 years, better than this year. Also seems likely the conference will continue to be strong and challenging though.
Post modem for WBB:
Taylor’s early and stupid fouls screwed any chance of hanging with the Cocks. She needs to stay on her feet and not try to block everything. They have not been able to coach that out of her.
Von O seemed scared for the first time. Dribbled off her foot and also lost the ball after a fake lunge by the SC guard.
Shooting was dreadful and we needed to be lights out.
The SC center got the star treatment big time and was able to bull her way around the hoop without getting called for fouls.
Season wise, this was a great coaching job by Rueck. Looked like the end of his run and then he pulls out the equivalent of pumping out the water of the flooded compartments on the Titanic and sailing her into port with only a twelve hour delay. The future is really bright. The what if is Aquino. She could have been a true difference maker.
or Kennedy Brown.
Sweaty’s mention of Kennedy Brown brings up a concern I have; how many of these gals are gonna stay around?
Seems at this talent level it is hard to not get plenty of minutes. Along with getting Taylor Jones to solve the foul trouble thing, I think holding on to great players is the biggest challenge facing Rueck.
Agree, duo-rodent, Von O did seem rattled. Can’t blame her, she’ll get better.
The cocks were really quick on D. Their center looked to be 50+ lbs heavier than any Beav and, as you say, got the star treatment. I will say, she came across as likable in post game.
Yikes just saw baseball lost to Santa Clara – are they any good? Seems like a bad loss on its face.
No, not that good at all.
https://www.santaclarabroncos.com/sports/m-basebl/2020-21/schedule
That said baseball does not need to win every game. If they win 2/3 of their games they will be in the post season. You don’t even need to win all your games in the post season to win it all. It’s a game where all it takes is a bad moment instead of a bad day.
Beavs did what they needed to offensively, but mid-week pitching was not stellar.
Yeah, they were 6 Beaver pitchers used, I think 3 were freshmen that made their college debuts, so lots of young guys out there.
Maybe a savvy move by Mitch and co. to get those guys some experience in a game with lower stakes?
Savvy move or just common sense?
We tease about Lindsay Schnell, she has been on the foolish side of some SJW battles and, even with her slobbering over the gum chewing bike rider, I’d say she has more credibility than Brenda.
At any rate, here’s her latest for USA Today:

TINKLE:
Up above about 24 hrs ago, Bill and Beav in OH had some good back and forth about Tinkle……ceiling, coaching son, etc.
Thought I’d add my .02.
Seems to me Tinkle may be a better coach when he has no son on the team, may go for Thompson to a degree as well.
While it seems obvious that players may feel slighted when the coaches kid gets minutes it may also mean that the coach is distracted/stressed by having to make decisions about his own kids playing time (even impacting their future). Keeping the line sharp between family and team may be more of a challenge than we realize.
Isn’t that part of why Pat Casey stepped away?
Then you have Bohiem at Syracuse. All accounts are the team respects Buddy and rallies around him. The beavs apparently never rallied on little tinks. Why?
Little tinks was good at stuffing the stat sheet. Maybe because big tinks ran everything through his son. The problem with Tres was he rarely delivered in the clutch and was prone to turnovers at critical moments. My nickname for Tres was “turn over tinkle”. It was incredible how often he’d do something stupid at the worst times. Ultimately, it led to consistently losing games that Tres scored a lot of points in. He got credit for “keeping them close” when in reality he was often the reason we lost. I think big tinks was blind to this reality but it wasn’t lost on the players… some left the program because of it.
“…ran everything through his son”
Not sayin’ smilin mike was related to Mannion, but this fits that situation too.
Couldn’t run the ball cause that would reduce the impressive “total passing yards”.
Reminds me of when I would say “turn over Tarver”. Can’t remember if that was Seth or Josh.
Even if that’s only worth another 1-2 wins per season, that makes us a solid NIT/bubble team on a regular basis. I think that’s the general expectation at this point.
If we’re talking Tinkle, I’m sure we have some investors on the board, and this makes me think of a completely hypothetical situation….
So years ago, you buy a stock, say ticker symbol TNKL. It goes up 10% right after you buy it, and you’re thinking “wow, I got this great stock at a nice deal!” You put more money into TNKL, excited about all the nice returns you’re going to make. However, TNKL starts tanking, down 10%, down 20%, you’re still thinking TNKL can turn it around because it acquired all these nice assets (tickers TRES, DREW, STVN) that should pay off – surely it’ll make its projected estimates soon, right? Down 30%, you’re “buying the dip”, committing more money to TNKL, down 50%… The thing looks dead, you’re thinking you should’ve sold, should’ve let someone else buy your shares way back when it was up 10%, back before you became a giant bagholding sucker. Then one quarter, probably through blood sacrifice rituals or some kind of divine intervention the darn thing actually beats estimates for the first time in almost 6 years….. [present day]… So you go all-in on TNKL, buy a ton more, and watch it revert back to the underperforming mess it generally has been, while you’re stuck holding even bigger bags wondering what you might have invested in instead. But hey, you did have that one nice divine intervention bump, so that’s cool. Maybe you can fawn over it another 20 years like the Fiesta Bowl team in football.
That’s what I see happening in OSU’s future. Hypothetically…
(let the downvotes commence)
No downvote, but disagree, and I am sure we both hope TNKL climbs steadily. OSU is not looking to retire with a golden parachute in the next few years by maximizing stock price at that time, but prefers to see steady long-term growth. Companies lose talent moving on or to retirement all the time (TRES, DREW, STVN), so the trick is for the CEO (AD) and Board (TRSTEES) to reload with talented executives (COACH) that can bring in talent, develop that talent, and deliver quality products.
So let’s just say TNKL is not the stock, but the VP that just delivered in a big way and is being considered for promotion to the executive VP level. Outside the company (OSU), the prospective executive VP is highly desired, so the company has to choose whether to be competitive to keep their hot new commodity. Some metrics the company might consider in that analysis – employee recruiting, retention and performance; product marketing and brand recognition; competitive analysis and sales (WINS); and product financial return.
So what it comes down to is this – does our favorite company (OSU) see a positive trend in those metrics worthy of a promotion to the executive VP level. My own grades in the 4 metrics listed might be:
Employee recruiting, retention, performance – B (and rising)
Product marketing and brand recognition – C+ (and rising)
Competitive analysis and sales – B+ (and rising)
Financial return – C (Covid – no data for trend)
A cautious promotion appears to be warranted, with the understanding that the post-Covid market could change abruptly.
Haha, nice. Maybe he’ll pull it off and be our next Pat Casey, but gotta take the emotions out of investing!
I think TNKL is more in line with AMC stock – a poor asset clearly on its way to zero that got lucky recently, but will soon revert to what we all expected. I’ll be loading up on put options, which should be selling for peanuts due to all the hopium the OSU Exchange traders seem to be high on :-)
We’ll know more next November I guess. This run has been cool but I’ve gone from get rid of Tinkle to sitting on the fence until next season. Maybe he’s figured it out (most likely not). Either way he deserves an extra year just for making the sweet 16.
I’m going to amend this. If he wins Saturday it’s Tinkle stonks to the moon. I mean an elite eight appearance on a mediocre regular season? Come on, thats got to be worth some extra coaching time.
“If he wins Saturday it’s Tinkle stonks to the moon. I mean an elite eight appearance on a mediocre regular season? Come on, thats got to be worth some extra coaching time.”
This is exactly what I’m afraid of. Not that the team will win (because that’d be awesome), but that it will result in a long costly contract for future underwhelming classic Tinkle results… if it hasn’t already.
I’m afraid it has, Barnes is already cumming in his shorts to get to the contract table for Tinkle. We can only hope its more money and not a big extension. Hopefully this isn’t a fluke.
…more money and not a big extension.
Is “Pay for Performance” too politically incorrect?………Tinks is an old white guy, so maybe it would fly in his case?
I think you’re all still missing the obvious significant variable of the sons being team leaders. WT has a pretty good track record without Tres and the Thompsons being the focal points. If you look at MPG from his time here, there’s an obvious drop off in use of the bench with the sons here, then it picks back up this season and looks more like WT’s first two seasons.
Next year will be very telling without (probably) Ethan. We should be deeper at guard and Davis looks to have a roughly similar skill set to Ethan’s. Malone-Key will give us a guard off the bench who can score inside the arc. Hopefully Silver or Johnson can step into Reichle’s spot, or Calloo can become a more well-rounded player.
Initial predictions are out and few if any are picking the Beavs to win. See a lot of advice to bet the Beavs to beat the spread.
I for one, really don’t feel like the Beavs are running into a juggernaut program. Probably still high from the fact they are in the sweet 16. The bigger mismatch would have been against Illinois. But I guess that works in the Beavs favor as they will have the underdog mentality and play loose.
Have no idea who will win but agree Loyola is certainly not what the experts are making them out to be. In fact, I’d say this is the most winnable game of our 3 match ups so far. Tennessee and OSU were talented teams with the ability to push tempo and full court press/trap which is our Achilles heal. This is a much better matchup for the Beavs. Just need to execute (play inside out) and shoot our season percentages and we likely win. Same could be said for Loyola
We’re going to have to play our best defense of the whole season to beat this team. Even if we do it’s Its going to be a dog fight.
McMahan leading the way with a 2 run double and a 3 run homer 5-0 Beavs
Casey 1 for 2 today with a BB, avg now .279
Well, the beavers scoring runs tonight, however, still nobody in the lineup would put fear into opposing pitchers.
Bruins cut Texas lead from 21 to 10 start of the 4th quarter. Got to root for the pac 12.
Bruins 1-15 from 3 point line does not get the job done.
Whatcha’ gonna do when the three pointers aren’t dropping for you. Brutha.
Well, we’re going go inside to the big dude with the 24″ pythons and watch him sidewalk slam a dunkarooskie on the other team’s candyass if you smelllllll what the Hulkster is cookin’…brutha!
Thank God this moron is gone soon.
https://reignoftroy.com/posts/pac-12-commissioner-larry-scott-continues-to-prove-he-s-the-absolute-worst-01f1jw2zjpky/amp
He’s an idiot but I sort of understand it from his perspective. He does not know where his next job is coming from, so he’s not going to piss anyone off with a show of strength.
Curious what other fans her would say is the Achilles heel of the basketball team? I would say no true ball handler and can’t break the press. Other than that they actually seem to be good all around but not great at anything. Good free throw shooting team but don’t seem to hit in the clutch. This team seems built for a tournament tho.
No true ball handler, not a lot of guys that can create offense consistently if the 3’s aren’t falling. That’s what I’ve feared the whole tournament, it just hasn’t happened yet. Without Alatishe in, rebounding effort often drops off. The rotations where Calloo is the second tallest guy on the court suffer from this.
They hit clutch FT’s against OkSU. Not sure that’s a major weakness.
The Achilles heel is selfish basketball. When the beavers were playing poorly it was usually due to stagnant offense with one-on-one at the end of the clock or shooting 3 pointers without any flow. And also on the defensive end not giving full effort to close out on the shooters.
Actually, I think on the season they have been very solid against a press. The OkSt game was a bit of a regression in that but overall this hasn’t been an issue. I also disagree with the foul shooting issue in the clutch. The numbers just don’t bear that out as the Beavs have done a great job this year closing games out. Winning most of the games that they led after halftime.
I think the reason they have been able to make a run like this is the depth. Many teams like to play 7 or 8 deep rotation to keep guys in their grooves. Tinkle has played 11 or 12 guys at significant times during the season, many times not in the same game. You saw that with Andela hardly playing in the OKST game and Tucker not really playing in the Tenn game. The positive to this is if someone is off someone else has confidence to step up (Calloo in the OKST game). The challenge with this philosophy is getting buy in from the team and the possibility of everyone pressing a bit when they see the floor to be that guy. I think that challenge was getting OSU earlier in the season but the team bought in during this final push and the results have followed.
Slocum headed to the WNBA with a very nice shoutout to Beaver Nation. No mention of Maryland.

Seems like rumors of bad blood were very much untrue
“I also need to thank both Maryland and Oregon State”
I think Bill has it right, the “…both Maryland and Oregon State” was followed by additional love for OSU and not a single additional mention of Maryland.
“My three years at OSU will always be very special to me….Additionally, the continued love and support during my time at Arkansas from Beaver Nation has meant the world to me, so thank you.”

Jezz, no respect from the nun.
None from the nun?
What position does she play, exactly? She seems to be more important than any of the kids actually playing the game, for either team. Look at any site and there are multiple stories about her and then Loyola, then maybe a fleeting item about the Beavs.
Honestly, I’m about done with the nun.
“Done with the nun.”
Or “Nun and done”
Would be great headlined after a beaver victory…
Team Chaplin is her role.
Who is the Beavos team chaplain? Can you name Loyolas starting guards?
No idea.
Williamson is one I think.
Exactly my point. Thanka for proving it. Now can the media do away with this ‘feel good’ bs nun story, please?
Higher Power Forward.

Two thoughts:
-Jimmy Anderson is at every practice?
-Interesting comments about Tinkle’s systems being complicated and it taking until late in the season for the players to grasp them. Yet another Riley analogy…but Tinkle has already accomplished more than Riley did.
Tinkle has accomplished more than Riley did? I dunno I feel like a Rose Bowl is up there with final 4. Alamo Bowl more like Sweet 16. Riley had us 3rd in the P12 once didn’t he? Tinks beat is like 4th or 5th.
Pac 12 tourney champs is better than anything Riley achieved. I don’t think Riley ever won 9 games in a row. Winning record against the ducks. I don’t think he ever beat this many ranked teams in a season either.
If we go pre-playoffs there was 5 BCS games including the championship. So that’s a top 10 finish which is equivalent to final 4 for sure. That said riley’s best bowl was Alamo/sunbow 3 times with ties for 2nd in the conference. That tier 2/3 would be equivalent to a sweet 16/elite 8.
So I would say regular season Riley wins, post season tinks wins.
I mean it is apples and oranges. 9 wins in a row in basketball is way easier than football. There is no pac12 tournament in football where any team can get hot an win 3 games to take it. I agreed at the end Riley was spent up and it was good he left but I feel like there is a bit of a revisionist history on underselling his decent accomplishments. Yes he always had warts but he also had a decent run in there and was on the cusp for several years. I’m just not ready to say peak Tinkle is anything better than peak Riley was. 2 or 3 more years of sneaking into the tourney and winning a game or two maybe but even then I dunno.
Terrible “analysis”.
Even with this cute little sweet 16 run, nothing Tinkle has done has exceeded Riley’s accomplishments, in either the regular season or “postseason”.
Yup not ready to say Tinkle has had more success than Riley.
If Tinkle makes the Elite Eight and can get to the Sweet Sixteen one more time, I’ll say he’s had more success.
The only significant post season wins for Riley were against decent Maryland, Mizzou and Pitt squads. Choked against Texas.
There’s something psychologically important about winning something concrete. Riley never did it. Tinkle has now. You can write off beating 5 of the country’s best teams in 5 games just as easily as writing off any 5-game winning streak Riley ever had. Riley’s best post-season wins were against fringe top 25 teams at best.
Resurrecting the football program was a major accomplishment, but I would still split the credit for that between Riley and Erickson.
Comparing the Sweet 16 to an Alamo Bowl is also way off.
Wow, tell me how you really feel Jay haha. You alright buddy?
Thanks for the link.
Mark Radford ” I had stopped watching it because it was so ugly. I wanted to watch something enjoyable. What they were doing wasn’t working. Maybe it has helped that Tres Tinkle is no longer there. He got every shot. (Wayne Tinkle) was handcuffed by his kid to a certain degree. Now the ball is spread around more and more players are contributing.”
Mark an AngryBeav?
Anyone else see the fireworks in the sky last night?
https://www.koin.com/news/oregon/flash-across-oregon-sky-meteor-space-junk-03252021/
It was something to see live, heading home from Squirrels at just the right time
We too saw it live….hanging out around fire pit, we weren’t sure what to make of it initially. We believe it was a Space X rocket coming back to Earth. Pretty awesome to see!
Yup….Falcon 9.
This basically sums up the opinion of the Beavs east of the Rockies
“Oddsmakers set a very good line, and it can go either way, but I’m going to side with Loyola Chicago. It may be recency bias but with the way they looked against the Illinois Fighting Illini, which came in as one of the best teams in the entire country, they should be able to control an Oregon State team that wouldn’t have made the NCAA Tournament without a Pac-12 title run.”
“Oregon State team that wouldn’t have made the NCAA Tournament without a Pac-12 title run”
True. No explanation, however, for about Tennessee and OK State?
It’s been very easy for the media to dismiss the Beavs but that’s been a good thing.
^^^^Yes, it’s been a good thing for sure!
So they’re basically setting up so that if the Beavs lose, then their end of season run was just a fluke…and if they win, well that must be a fluke as well.
Oh if they win, they’ll start getting a lot of hype but yeah if they lose, they’ll be brushed away like they accomplished nothing.
BASEBALL TURNING POINT?
Each season probably has a number of turning point games but the matchup today with Meggs and his dawgs seems like a turning point, at least for Kevin Abel and Rich Dorman.
Will Abel start?–Probably
The question is, not will he pick up a few more K’s, but will he begin to eliminate WP/BB/HBP problems that have been the mark of his performance so far.
He comes in with an ERA of 3.65 and in 24.2 innings has 14 BB, 4 WP, and 7 HBP.
That’s very near a free runner each inning, but he strikes out about 1.7 per inning.
Should he remain the Friday night guy with those numbers? Can the Beavs bats (notwithstanding the out of conference pattern) support him if his performance continues?
Any chance Dorman decides to use one of the bullpen guys for the first inning and then goes to Abel?
Game time is 5pm, streamed by UW.
https://pac-12.com/live/university-washington-3
You can’t make a fair judgment on Abel until he is given run support. At least 3-4 runs.
As for the series, Beavs need to win the series. This is the easier part of the schedule. The second half of the year is much harder.
agree with your comment. .after a two year layoff, some expect him to pickup right where he left off in 2018. If pitching was only that simple….if you’ve ever come back from a serious injury, there’s always a psychological hurdle to overcome…..your injury is always in the back of your mind until it’s not. I suspect that Abel will hit his groove once the weather warms up, he has a few more starts under his belt, and he feels more comfortable in the mound. Right now he is battling the psychological hurdle and when finally overcomes that, he will be fine. That said, getting back to being fine won’t happen in just 4 or 5 starts. Overcoming a serious injury requires patience and repetition…..last but certainly not least….confidence. He will regain that and it’s just a matter of time.
Absolutely love the comments from Anderson and Radford. No punches pulled.
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/ex-beaver-greats-weigh-in-on-tinkle-2020-21-beavers-?format=amp&__twitter_impression=true
I thought their comments were spot on, they didn’t sugarcoat previous failures. Great article.
If OSU keeps the score in the 60s, beavers win…if it’s 70-80s, I don’t think so. If beavers continue playing attacking defense and the inside out game, that’s a winning formula too. Hopefully, OSU backup center gets PT in this as he provides a completely different look and style of play than Silva. Beavers depth could be a huge factor too. I want to watch IA and CT too with their outstanding freshmen guards,
Based on the Loyalas season stats, they score less than the Beavs but shoot at a higher percentage. Not sure OSU can be as efficient on offense which means they need more possessions. OSU is 7-1 in their last 8 games and have scored 70+ in all of their wins. The only loss was to Oregon where they scored 67. They score 70 and they win.
I disagree. If we score 75 we win. Low scoring game favor Loyola. In 3 out of their 4 losses, they gave up 75+.
Let me clarify….what I meant was of the beavers can hold Chicago Loyola in the 60s,,
Ahhh gotcha. Agree wholeheartedly that if OSU can hold them in the 60s, more on the low end, they win.
The key will be holding Loyola under their season average shooting percentages and defensive rebounding. If Beavs can continue to mix up the defensive looks and limit shots, Loyola will begin to feel more pressure on every shot. Giving the plumber too much space to work is the lesson to take away from the Illinois game tape. Krutwig can control the game if he has time and space to direct their offense. I wonder if he can guard Silva without getting in foul trouble. SIlva can force him to defend without fouling. Hopefully we don’t see any star treatment for this guy…
I think Beavs will duplicate what we’ve already seen. Beavs will steadily increase their lead by halftime and then an extended defensive run/empty possessions for Loyola will take the game out of reach in the second half.
I expect Tinkle will use some of that morphing match-up zone and dare them to shoot jumpers.
Beavs 73- Fighting Nuns 64
Way to jinx it
Yeah, that was my biggest worry when I hit “post comment’….I have re-evaluated my previous post and declare that the Beavs will simply revert to the mean and go hero ball while losing by 25 in classic national television Beaver style.
Is that better?
Situational hitting still leaves much to be desired. Two chances for big innings and nothing to show for them.
HPB #3 for Abel. He’s hit more Huskies than a dog sledder.
Needs to get that under control – 6 innings of no hit pitching, though. Good start!
Where in the hell are they setting up the camera? Kennewick? I know I should just be grateful for the free stream, but geez a 14-year-old with a phone could probably do a better broadcast.
The camera location leaves a bit to be desired.
I thought the dawgs had deep, deep pockets? Only one camera and doesn’t seem to be movable, no views of balls down the foul lines even when in play.
Makes ya appreciate the OSU stream; after early games had at least three cameras and showed good selection of timely replays.
I did like their play-by-play guy better than Warren, but I kept wanting to grab binoculars to see the action. Hard to even call the broadcast viewable.
Heard warren on the way home, 9th inning blown play, warren screws up the call, blames it on being tires, says I know a lot of you don’t like me anyway, so I dont care. Verrry professional, dimwit.
Wow, does the poor bastard read AB? It’s not about being liked, do your job better. How many years has he done this before Parker takes over?
“Heard warren on the way home, 9th inning blown play, warren screws up the call, blames it on being tires.. “
He should have gone with the Coopers…
That field design is a bit strange. Really long distance between the dugouts and baselines. And if there’s a passed ball, the catcher has to run a marathon to get it.
Beavs ahead 3-0 going into the bottom of the 9th. They have left a lot of runners on base, but the pitching staff has a wacky no-hitter by committee still in play!
A little surprising to see Mulholland brought in for the ninth, seems Mundt or even Watkins could have gone for more than an inning and Dorman could have saved Mully for later in the series and a possibly closer score.
Beavs win 3-0, combined no-hitter with several walks, and HBP’s thrown in there for good measure. Beavs smack 11 hits, but only generate three runs. Win is a win!
See what happens when you give Abel a few runs??? I’ll say it again, he hasn’t blown a lead all year.
NO TURNING POINT
As pointed out by Dolphin2Boy, the challenges facing Abel are real. No argument there, the psychological hurdle is a major factor. Canham/Dorman have made the choice to put him in the spotlight as the “Friday Night Guy”……seems to me the gamble is: do you show confidence in him by taking that step, or do you reduce the pressure by starting him as your Sat or Sun guy.
As has been pointed out, the Dawgs aren’t among the most serious challenges Beav pitchers will face, still a nice accomplishment for Able (and Co.) to throw the no hitter.
OTOH, the WP/HBP/WP issue continues. Exactly 1 free runner per inning.
For me, jury is still out on the wisdom of the Canham/Dorman gamble.
Go Beavs, nice to win the ones you are supposed to.

Some random night before the game musings,
The tourney is always about matchups. I wouldn’t quite say the Beavs the more athletic team, definitely taller.
Watched the highlights of the first two Loyola games. Georgia Tech gave em a game until the last 5 minutes. Illinois was never in it. A common theme, Loyola guys communicate very well.
Krutwig sells the “I am not an athlete” shtick quite well. But he moves very well and has sticky fingers. It’ll be interesting to see who the Beavs put on him. Alitishe has the deceiving wingspan but gives up 50 pounds. Silva is the bigger man but isn’t quick. Krutwig had his way will the Illinois center on offense with off the ball movement. Though the Illinois guy did have 21 points going the other way. Kind of a wash.
I think the story is the same for Loyola as OSU, the easy scouting report is that if you shut down Krutwig, you can beat them. Everyone thinks if you shutdown Ethan, your going to win the game. Nope, both teams have guys who step up and fill the void. Krutwig doesn’t get into foul trouble much but if he does, it could be a big advantage.
Beavs turned the ball over an amazing 35 times in the past two games and still won by double digits. Didn’t win those games by shooting lights out, won those games on defense.
Kenpom is a superstar this week as his site has been quoted endlessly. Analysts are in love with the defensive efficiency metric that ranks Loyola #1. But Tennessee is right there at #4. Ok St was at #20.
This will be Loyola’s third game in a row vs power 5. Will be a test of whether they are good in small batches vs P5 or legitimate title contenders. Always the question of whether a mid major could survive a P5 conference season.
Beavs are the second worst team left per kenpom. Oral Roberts is the worst.
As much as I have looked into the matchup and the analytics, you can find any stat you fit your point of view. It just comes down to this. Beavs should play the way that got them here. No need try other things. Play the same starting five. Play good defense, force them into low percentage shots. On offense, attack the rim and knock down some threes.
Keys to the game.
1. What role player steps up? It’s gotta be Alitishe right? So many misses from point blank in the last two games. Hunt is also due.
2. Big men need to stay out of foul trouble.
3. Don’t think Loyola will press but if they do, Beavs have had a week to work on breaking the press.
Things to watch for,
1. When the Beavs go inside to the post, watch out for the guards to try to strip the big men. Their guards are smaller and very quick.
2. Don’t think the Beavs need to run but if they see some Loyola guys gassing, press the attack so they can’t setup their defense.
3. Who can fool the other better, Krutwig with his athleticism or Alitishe with his wingspan? Illinois wasn’t ready for the quickness and Cunningham wasn’t ready for the length, getting blocked twice straight up.
Glad the game is early, would be tough to wait around all day.
I would be surprised if alatishe matched up with kurtwig. It doesn’t make sense to me. Keep doing what they’ve been doing and hopefully they can get him into foul trouble. Also have two other guys with good size that can deliver quality minutes. Is it andela time? I could see him stepping up to the occasion.
I’m at maui Airport right now because of a freak death to My best friends girlfriend. I have to go to Phoenix first and land in portland at 11:50 hopefully will be able to catch the game.
One thing you didn’t mention is the quality depth OSU has as they can go 9 deep. Angela is much quicker in the post and offers more offensive versatility than does Silva so OSU can give them different looks. If OSU keeps Chicago in the 60s, beavers have a great shot. We need quality contributions from everyone. Finally, there’s virtually no pressure for the beavers to win as they are the underdog again…i looked at Chicago’s schedule and their only signature win was Illinois. Beyond that a bunch of mid majors while we know the beavers beat USC, UCLA, OR and CO and as everyone had seen, the pac12 has performed very well in the tournament. Beavs play the way they’re played in the last 9 games and I think they’ll be in position to win this game. Another X Factor is FT shooting. I don’t know what Chicago team FT % is but the beavers have been great during the season.. 69-62 if things play out right for the beavers.
Andela…..
I hope Andela is ready, I think he will be needed. I know the rotation worked out well against Okst, but I think it was still a shitty deal that Andela did not get any minutes. After how well he has played (especially against Oregon), he had to be thinking WTF.
Not sure why he didn’t play but he’ll be needed today.
Krutwig is a 33 year old plumber..
Is that why you keep checking out his butt crack?
Dropped another $90 at the bookstore figure I’d put my employers vaccine incentive to good use. Shoot, hope I get to go back next week. Seriously, I have Beaver bowl game sweatshirts dating from the Oahu Bowl against Hawaii in ’99 to present day. Might be another 20 years before I get the chance to buy another Sweet 16 shirt. Also bought a Pac 12 champs hat. Might not see it again in my lifetime.
