  1. Ok… I have to question the “star” portion if this post. We’re not selling subscriptions. We’re wanting the best for our team. I think the volume alone should speak to your argument.

    • What’s wrong with using stars?

Even if they’re wrong, they’re wrong across the board (for all 12 teams).

Many players aren’t ranked yet, so that’s the one issue with using them this early, but I think they highlight the main point just fine. I also think, in general, stars do matter. They’re a gauge of tangibles if nothing else.

      • “Even if they’re wrong, they’re wrong across the board (for all 12 teams).”

Kinda speaks to the volume argument I presented.

        No?

Unless it’s USCum, then star value really doesn’t matter out here.

  2. One “0 star” with 2 years of eligibility….

Gee, what’s up at WSU – a new coach didn’t re-engerize the program or spark recruiting did he? Six three stars is pretty good in that “market,” and the same range OSU or recruit quality OSU should be shooting for to form the foundation of its classes.

    Irrelevance, here we come.

  3. OK… so based on yesterdays news of 8 defections… today we stand at -7.

I guess that will open the door for more walk-ons and allow the starters more reps. in practice. I just know that somewhere in this pile of s**t there’s a pony! JB

    • I wanted to see how it felt to use that excuse since it’s the one I hear most often. I usually get an eye strain from the vigorous eye rolling I do every time I hear it.

On a more serious note, the reason OSU has fewer commits is that our helmet logo looks like a muskrat instead of a toilet seat.

      • We dont go to Bowl games. We dont win (17 of last 25 games are losses). Our coaching and athletic department are stale. Kids want to Win, they want to be part of something exciting and they want to go to bowl games. We cant offer that, so we are left picking up the Pac12 scraps. Truth hurts, but this football program is an absolut mess right now.

        • You bring up a lot of good points about winning being the main driver that brings in better recruits. Bit even when we were winning we were still getting the leftover scraps from the rest of the conference.

          • 2006 was Riley’s best year and 2007 was probably his worst class.
He doesn’t capitalize on opportunity, so winning or losing are both the same.

Just like he didn’t capitalize on having Quiz. After having a dark-horse Heisman candidate and future pro, the best RB he could land was Agnew? He should have been able to land a blue chip (though it is understandable why nobody would want to run behind that line).

          • I ultimately think that Storm will end up being the better of the backs, but both. Of their careers are still in the very early stages. Recruiting isn’t as simply as that though. Having good players in the past help al

Good point about the oline though, quizz I think tired of having to make 3 defenders miss just to get back to the line of scrimmage.

          • I ultimately think that Storm will end up being the better of the backs, but both. Of their careers are still in the very early stages. Recruiting isn’t as simply as that though. Having good players in the past help a lot but many other aspects go into landing blue chippers

Good point about the oline though, quizz I think tired of having to make 3 defenders miss just to get back to the line of scrimmage.

          • And I’m not kidding. Chris Brown will be a super star.

I apologize for not being able to make the last two words of that last sentence flash and pop. Brown will be one of those kids we never wanted to leave after his junior year.

Way OT… Austin Dillon may be running a good car out front, but Stenhouse is going to win this race. It is what it is.

          • I agree Jack, brown looks really good. I was talking about the recruiting class with Agnew and Woods, I think woods is the better back out of the two.

      • Understood. That’s something I might try in the near future as well. But it’s hard crapping on the town where I was born and the school I attended.

Hi potential recruit X. The place I love most and have most of my best memories is just a crap-hole which nobody likes. So you should come here. You should be some of the less that Mike Riley can do more with.

        I like the apologist’s sell.

        Not.

  4. Might want to adjust those totals:

    Greg Biggins ?@GregBiggins

DL Daeshon Hall just committed to #Washington
OL Poasi Moala just committed to #Washington
WR Demorea Stringfellow just committed to #Washington
DL Andrew Basham just committed to #Washington
Elijah Qualls just committed to #Washington
RB Lavon Coleman just committed to #Washington
    Caleb Tucker committed to #Washington

all these right after their camp, how many did we get after our Fullerton camp…

    Inna Lazarev ?@InnaLazarev
Ontario (Calif.) Colony wide receiver Samaje Grant has committed to Arizona.

    • I’ve never really gotten how those camps work except that it seems like other schools seem to get more out of them than we do.

    • Qualls is a baller. I never had any pretension that he would come here. But he is one rare specimen I don’t want toplay against now or in the future.

The rest? Meh. Maybe Moala. But I’m not impressed. I like a couple of their earlier commits more… namely Bryant.

    • Washington is cleaning up. Looks like Wilcox can recruit. How many 3* and up recruits would OSU have right now if he was our head coach this year? My guess is atleast 6 or 7 by now. Have to say stealing him from Washington and attracting quality recruits sounds much better than continuing to hear all the same old excuses and watching our recruiting slump to the dumps.

  5. Perhaps it’s a new cost cutting method of recruiting. Let every other school fill their classes first and then you can focus on the kids we can actually sign. Assuming we can beat out Portland and Sac.
State that is. This and the new lost and found at Reser are the first steps towards the summit.

      • Retire… I may have just arrived.

Remember my slogan on arrival at this site last year was; “I can restore the 3 win glory years…call me!” My services are more in need now than ever. I was the master of “moral victories” and so close” losses. I think that era is about to return. JB

    • in a way, presumably with intention, this post makes the contrary point being made relative to the larger football discussion, namely, that Casey has built a reputation, for himself, and the program, that keeps OSU baseball in the discussion a propos the highest level of performance in the game. True, the program has its ups and downs, relatively speaking, but in baseball the Beavs are always relevant. The problem with baseball isn’t the product Pat puts on the field, but rather the lack of institutional support for BDC that allows travesties like not even getting a 4th seed in 2008 as two time defending champion, or being relegated to Baton Rouge for the this year’s regional play.

    • Think Pat Casey would be interested in coaching football? At the very least he’d have to be an upgrade in recruiting.

  6. LOL … we are in dire straits and need a wonderful recruiting class to give us a chance to get back to a winning record, to become competitive again and……. we are not just last, but ridiculously last.

….could they be looking to phase out football?

Is there any way to question the AD and Riley about this? Any word from inside? What the hell is happening?

  7. I would not believe anything BDC or MR would have to say at this point. They have “closed the wagons” against anything and everything which might be negative towards them and the football program and this includes answering questions with a straight and honest answer. It will take power to get to a position which will turn our football program around and Beaver Nation does not possess that power. The Ducks……..fans, alumni and busters do have the power.

    • Seriously? Duck fans?

I had the joy of having to attend a birthday party two seasons ago while Nikegon was playing a game. Since the little girl was a spoiled brat, I found myself biting the bullet and hiding in the basement with the other dads who were watching the Duck game.

I kid you not. These were some of the stupidest football fans I have ever encountered. Not stupid people… stupid fans. One dude thought a penalty should have been thrown because LMJ was tackled behind the line of scrimage. He didn’t want a penalty for what he thought was a facemask or a horse collar or something like that. He was seriously calling for a flag to be thrown because LMJ was tackled in the backfield.

And half the room vocally agreed.

I felt like stupid was going to point at me and say, “That guy didn’t say harumph!”

Their fans have no power. They’re just along for the ride. It’s a nice ride, but I think half of them don’t even appreciate it.

  8. The biggest loss in the group of players that left has to be Cowdin. He brought the most size and maturity of the LBs that were in last years class. Since he never played a game for the Beavs I wonder if he can immediately go elsewhere and be eligible. He must have seen something in his short tenure here to discourage him enough to leave. Hopefully the other commits from last year have a better experience.
Was at the Olympic trials to see the second day of the decathlon, and that Eaton kid is nothing but class! From Bend, but also a former Duck, too bad. He did benefit from a home field advantage but it will be great to see him in the Olympics. Guess that is why we are bringing back track.

  9. So would it be fair to say that only University of Idaho has a worse football program in the Northwest than OSU? U of 0 > OSU, UW > OSU, WSU = OSU, BSU > OSU, Idaho < OSU.
Crap! This is just in the Northwest people! How can we ever be a Top 10 team again if we can't even be in the top 3 in the Northwest? Remember the 2000 Fiesta Bowl? Yeah, so do I, too bad OSU will never play in another January Bowl game in my lifetime again. Well, here's to moral victories and more drinking!

    • You sure we are better than Idaho? I think as of last year anyway, we can lose to anyone.

Yeah, I remember the 2000 Fiesta Bowl…..I have it on tape. Its always an uplift in our current Dark Age. Dont give up hope — there wasnt but a few years from that 28 yr losing streak to that Fiesta Bowl. But I cant see our neato, laid back Mike Riley doing it. No way I can visualize that. But we get someone with the right smarts, the right energy, and it can happen.

      Changes need to be made!

  10. And all of this after last year’s proclamation: “We’re going to review everything we do, including off season, to improve this an turn it around.”

So you missed on Cowdin – either his work ethic, habits, football intelligence, whatever, we’ll never hear – after proclaiming DT’s were not a need, but JC linebackers were?

The losing, the poor game management, the flush of new coaches elsewhere (Leach, Rodiriguez, Mora), the off-season handling like this – it all HAS to be contributing to this poor recruiting.

Look at Arizona, WSU (with new coaches) and Colorado. Out competing OSU at its niche – the three star athlete. OSU is unlikely to get a bunch of 4 or 5 star athletes (and I know this system is limited), but a strong foundation of 3 stars is all it needs to compete and play good football.

When does OSU play PSU next? Nigel Burton might be putting together a better roster….

    • “So you missed on Cowdin – either his work ethic, habits, football intelligence, whatever, we’ll never hear…”

His wife hated Corvallis. You’ve heard it.

      • How could she hate Corvallis with Albany only being 10 miles away?
Sounds like his wife wears the pants in the family.

      • “…His wife hated Corvallis….”

        Sorry, I don’t buy that.

However, I will accept “we didn’t want him anyway”. If you know what I mean.

  11. There is no difference between 5 star and 1 star recruits and a top 10 or top 120 recruiting class. . . if you have a lifetime contract.

  12. Angrybeavs report:
Last weekend I was visiting the Bay area and went to check out the renovation of Cals stadium.
It is really going to be spectacular. They added a performance center that is cut into the hill
beneath the downhill side of the stadium made of cut stone that you walk over as you got through several of the gates. You can look in through glass walls that line the entrances. Beautiful landscaping around it and the new press/luxury box looks pretty cool. I love the old, historic complete bowl stadiums and it really looks great all spruced up. A+

Went to an event at Stanford’s stadium. Have been there several times, The redo is great and it’s like walking through a park in their athletic complex. One thing that struck me was how plain jane the luxury box was. Same company that did our new stadium here at Minnesota did the Stanford one and it is like a double wide compared to a custom home. Surprising with all the money at that school. The one at Reser looks to be much nicer. However, where else can you walk out the top deck of a stadium on to putting green grass with palm trees? Very nice venue.

Came away thinking we are really up against it. UW stadium when done will be awesome. One of the coolest locations in CFB. Autzen is great. How do we stack up against WSU? Never been there.

I did talk to a lady and her son on the flight. He was from Beaverton and was going to the Stanford
FB camp. Kid is going to be a junior and they moved there last year from TX. Southlake Carroll to be precise. Did not get the kids name, but was about my height, 6′, and really put together. Mom said he was a very good student and were hoping to snag a Stanford offer. Nice kid. She also told me he had gone to the OSU camp two weekends ago and came away very impressed with MR and he staff FWIW. Told the kid several times, “don’t be a Duck!”

    • With his speed and moves, he should at least get to the line of scrimmage before he is tackled.
He will need to adjust his style to dodging a tackler as soon as he takes the handoff and having no holes to run through.
