Okay, so maybe it’s more like the def leading the blind (no offense to either of those disabled classes).
The delusion runs deep. Craig Robinson, according to Kerry Eggers, said that next years’ Beaver team will be “a top 25 team” if Eric Moreland returns. Bob D, in his increasing delusion (possibly due to his illness??), offered this mind-boggling and intellectually offensive letter:
I want to thank you for your continued support of Oregon State Athletics.
Many of you have recently sent your thoughts to me about the OSU men’s basketball program. No one is more disappointed in our inability to reach our goals than head coach Craig Robinson and myself.
Coach Robinson and I have met multiple times in the past two weeks, and he has presented me with a plan that will move the Oregon State men’s basketball program forward to achieve the goals that this university supports. Our goals in every sport are to win a conference title; to play in NCAA postseason events; to compete with character and integrity; and to help guide our student-athletes to graduate and succeed in life.
I’m looking forward to watching Coach Robinson continue to build our program. He is a man of great character and someone who represents Oregon State University with integrity. I ask for your continued support of Beaver basketball.
I close with a few facts about Coach Robinson’s OSU career:
**He is the fourth-winningest coach in Oregon State history with 94 victories and trails only Hall of Famers Slats Gill, Ralph Miller and Bob Hager.
** Oregon State has been .500 or better four times since 1991 and he has coached his teams to three of those seasons.
** Oregon State has won eight conference games three times since 1993 of which he has had two of those seasons.
** Oregon State had four wins against top-50 and six against top-100 NCAA basketball programs this past season, including wins over two teams that advanced to the Sweet 16.
** Five Oregon State players have received All-Pac-12 recognition.
** Nine Oregon State student-athletes have received Pac-12 All-Academic recognition.
** Eight Oregon State players have been named Pac-12 Player of the Week.
** Three of his players are in the top 15 on Oregon State’s all-time scoring list (Roberto Nelson is fourth, Devon Collier is seventh and Jared Cunningham is 15th).
** He will be the head coach of a Pac-12 All-Star team that will compete in China in August.

These guys both must think fans are def, dumb, and blind. The truth is this: Craig Robinson likes easy money. This is why he was an investment banker. They make money off others’ money and suck on government teat. It’s an easy life. Same situation at OSU…tax payers paying his salary, barely has to work, etc. He just name drops Obama and then says ridiculous shit like “next year we will be top 25!” like an internet troll hoping that if he says something enough it will come true. Bob D, on the other hand, knows he’s guilty of this contract, so he’s spinning mediocre accomplishments as if they’re a big deal. CR’s only accomplishment is fundraising for a practice facility. Bob D should fire CR, but short of that he should be honest and just admit he doesn’t have the money to do it. Instead we get this offensive and ridiculous letter mentioning CR in the same breath as Ralph Miller and Slats Gill. Give me a break. BDC’s litany of CR’s accomplishments is right out of the Mediocre Mike Playbook: number of wins, winning seasons, conference wins are all analogues to the football scenario: we haven’t loss 28 years in a row (lately). Big wins against name competition = Riley’s several wins at home vs. SC
and the game vs. Cal when they were #2. All academic: nuff said. Scoring records etc.is an analogue to TD passes thrown/caught, also a few guys in the League. Like I said: DeCarolis
has perfected these apologetics with Riley and since he figures it has worked there he decided to apply that logic model to hoops.
I agree. Riley has had 1.5 years where he wasn’t Coach Rob. And he doesn’t even get the nod as our best coach in his sport at our school in the last 20 years.
So CR will be inducted into the HOF next year? That letter could be used as an example of insulting someone’s intelligence.

BDC has f’d up one too many things. Would love to see him go. I don’t think he’s behind baseball success, I think football with Riley at helm, football has about the same level of success with any AD (and Reser gets half done either way), the womens basketball program doesn’t cost the football team a bodybag game and doesn’t need a hero to dig them out of the gigantic hole BDC put them in. The mens basketball program wouldn’t have been in as deep a hole in 2007 had John been fired earlier (another contract extension mistake and another bodybag game for football) nor this big a hole now without Craig’s extension. The practice facility that should have been built in 2002 that benefits 5+ sports, was built in 2012. He’s had decent success with Wrestling and Gymnastics, mostly because no one tries at those sports and Reser has no plans to be finished any time soon even though the last phase was almost ten years ago.

Unfortunately, I think the talent is good enough to be better but will only play .500 because of the coach. Isn’t that what upsets us?
I know apathy is here to stay. But that doesn’t mean the players feel the same. I think they were probably interviewed in the last couple days. And I think they’re still on board with CR.

I have. There is talent on our roster. We now have more players who can shoot the ball from outside than at any time I can remember. And they will be leaned on while trying to replace 84 minutes per game–113 mpg if Moreland leaves too.
If we run more of that diamond short corner offense we ran at times early this past year, I can see us doing well on offense. If we continue to run the 4-1 high on-ball screen shit, I’m going to go nuts. And with Berto gone we can kiss the iso flex option goodbye… hopefully.
For better or worse, the seniors were the leaders due to experience. They were put on the floor and they had their green lights. But that doesn’t mean they were the end all of talent. Along with those minutes and points, we’re giving up a ton of turnovers… and matador defense.
We give up good and bad. And then we get some new blood incoming as well.

To me it looks terrible, but I stopped paying close attention in early 2012.
We need a real swing player who can face up or finish at the rim. But we look pretty good everywhere else. If Moreland can start hitiing mid-range (and he returns) that would work. Think of how much improved the team would have been if Devon would have been able to take and make open mid-range shots. Why did he wait until the last three games of his career to start doing so?
That’s one major coaching fault. He wasn’t allowed to make mistakes early in order to gain that confidence later. I said the same of Angus below. That’s why he hesitates. He was thinking too much instead of playing. Down the stretch, the team played not to lose. It’s all a matter of trying not to make mistakes instead of trying to always be the aggressor. Defense can be the same way. When you try not to make mistakes, you’re going to lose that battle. When you try to play the game, you’re still going to make mistakes. But you’re going to do it on your own terms.
Jack…. I respect you and much of your posting. Hey, some I just dont get, so cant judge. ….and I recall you speaking the same way, re expected talent, of Berto, Brant and others, a few years ago. But it didnt come to be, as results. So I am not going to expect much for next year.
I didn’t expect Berto to be so slow and poor defensively. I knew his game was tilted to one end, but not that much. And Brandt developed pretty well for the tools he has. He just didn’t get to the point where his experience outweighed him thinking about his next move.
That’s the level I think others on the team will develop. They will end up with all the right tools according to what their abilities are, but they will over-think the game. And they will make mistakes because they are trying not to do so. This is my conclusion of Coach Rob’s skills after seeing his original recruiting class graduate.
When you try not to make mistakes, you end up 15 feet from the hoop with your back to it… looking for someone to pass to until the weak side defender doubles you and knocks the ball away… because you’re doing weird shit and don’t deserve to hold the ball any more. Say what you want about Olaf, but that kid is of a singular mind. It works or it doesn’t work. But when it does work, at least we get points out of it. When our guys complete a perimeter pass after finally finding someone open (if there’s not a five second call), the only thing I can say after it works is that I can stop either yelling at the TV/floor… or holding my breath.
So I can see plenty of talent on our roster. Then I imagine what they would be if they reached their highest potential and dial it back about 30%.

I know Jimmy and his family. I grew up knowing them all.
That doesn’t keep me from saying that if he had stayed one more year I don’t think he would have reached CR’s win total. He would have had to coach .500 ball over a season. He just didn’t have it in him to do so.
Jimmy was one helluva recruiter and a decent coach. But Ernest’s death killed him as a coach. And I can’t blame him. After that, his legacy was destined to be the guy who took over a team that happened to have Gary Payton on the roster.
Jimmy Anderson? The guy who only got the HC job because he was Miller’s assistant? And who then proceeded to run the program into the ground? Not much as a HC.

And once you see such analysis of BDC’s statement on retaining CR, its hard not be be REALLY concerned. And by making such a ludicrous statement, BDC puts himself under a more critical light. I think there are only two things one can reasonably think — either BDC is a bit of a moron and doesnt realize he is spouting bull, or he thinks all Beaver fans are morons and will believe the bull.

Eggers is by far our best writer. And he’s not even exclusive to OSU. He’s good covering anyone.
While I agree that hoops is worse off than football, I think they’re both bad right now. The last four years have been pretty pathetic for both except for a span in the 2012 football season (obviously not the end of that year).
Riley has more than deserved the same treatment from Eggers. And it’s probably because Bobby D refuses to hold anyone accountable for their performances that he also deserves this. But instead of laying into Riley over similar situations, Eggers decides to do so now?
All I’m asking is that if Kerry is going to lay into Bobby D for this (which is justified), then he needs to project the whole picture and include Riley and some other coaches in his rant… or at least be as timely with them as he is here.
I enjoy reading Eggers more than any of the local writers, but I always keep in mind that he’s friends with Riley and has gone after CR in the past, so this latest is not a complete surprise.
I think the problem with BDC and “accountability” is that the true accountability for Riley and CR is to just be good enough as to not be a complete embarassment like happened in the past.
Their benchmarks for achievement are pretty low. Make a minor bowl game more often than not and don’t go 0-18 in league play. BDC’s problem is that after a certain amount of time being mediocore is boring and it shows in fan support.
I think that’s why he babbling about Rose Bowls and had his “meeting” with CR. At this point, with weak schedules and expanded post season opportunities, any coach could come to OSU and be mediocore. BDC has to know that or he is a fool. And he also sees that superior coaching can get results a la Rueck and Casey something he clearly does not have with Riley and Robinson.

I would have been fine with the character crap from BDC and left it at that know that he backed himself into a corner with CR’s contract, but the list of accomplishments is insulting and CR should have nixed it himself considering the meager results.
I think I’ll try a self-appriasal highlighting my mediocore accomplishments to my boss next review and see how far that gets me.

Football season ticket renewals and OBN commitments due tomorrow. Hoops season tix renewals will be due July 31. That ought to be a busy date for the AD. :/
Let’s assume we’re going to pay CR either way. We will pay him $1.3m per year whether he’s here or not. It’s not a lump sum buy-out. Revenue distributions from TV must be the only real incoming stream. At least it seems to be the only one Bobby D thinks is important. But that outweighs expenses all by itself… by about $1m. So hoops can afford a move for a different coach.
Now imagine also seeing an increase in season tix and licensed swag sales. And with increased interest and attendance comes increased giving. That’s all lost opportunity.
So now do we have the old conversation about withholding support versus giving? Does one or the other move toward the change we want?
I agree, it’s not just the salary but all that missed opportunity for excitement and the revenue that would follow. Maybe Bob D is thinking that next years team will be so bad that the new coach wouldn’t garner any excitement. That is probably true. So maybe he plans to fire him once the roster improves a bit after next year. That is the only reasoning that makes a little sense, but I feel I’m giving BDC too much credit.
So no one knows what BDC actually said to CR. One wonders.
As to what if, if a new coach did appear this year — I would think it would generate interest, just to see what he is capable of. Going to watch more CR has no interest at all. The only thing that saves BDC’s decision is CR rising up and doing a visibly better coaching job, next season.
I really feel bad for the players, though.

Wilcox v. Gothberg… should be good
According to the stats, UM will win 2.5 to 2.2.
We won the regular season championship and then decided not to show up for the tourney.
This was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Last years team was loaded with high NHL picks.
Wisconsin was the overwhelming favorite to win the regular season because of all the upperclassmen coming back and all of the key losses for the Goph’s. The seven freshman Lucia brought in this year have been remarkable. If they play with good effort and get an early lead, they are very good. Wilcox has been so good that they are allowing the defenseman to really attack on offense and Mike Reilly(why does that name ring a bell?) has really blossomed into a great defenseman. Goph’s split the regular season with Bucky and then lost to tOSU in B1G tourney.
It looked liked they didn’t think they needed to try to win and they were wrong. Fans were pissed, as this has become common theme late in the season for Lucia’s squads. They played great this weekend and have a very deep, but young team. I saw them play and crush BC at Mariucci opening weekend. It should be a good final with four quality programs.
PC police about the schedule. Now that they are the Fighting Whioux and not the racist Sioux, it is OK to schedule them. Apparently is OK to play the Seminoles in the B1G ACC challenge and in the NIT tomorrow because the Seminole tribe embraces the FSU nickname.
Wilcox is pretty awesome. And Reilly (and probably his brothers too) is tough as nails. But Rau is my favorite player on the team. He’s just rock solid when he gets a look. And he’s so strong for being so small. And Kloos should be fun to watch for a couple years as well. I don’t like Marshall though. He’s a little loose with the stick.
I noticed over the season that UM is really really good at shutting down power plays. The team formerly known as Sioux do the same. And both can scramble when they need to do so. Wiscy just gave up once MacMillan made that late goal. d see their season disappear right then. It was a beautiful thing.
I still hate Chelios for that 1983 game.
I think MacMillan is the first player with a negative +/- I can remember I think will make the difference in a FF game. And I think Warning will be the key for UND to shut down.
BDC should have never released a statement like this. All he needed to say was CR is the coach.
Totally agree. I wonder if an intern wrote it and BDC didnt even look at it. But will assume he wrote it. The “thanks for your continued support” remark is a bit like CR’s “if I get ifred”……both smack of arrogance. CR doesnt care if he gets fired, indeed, may even want that. Honestly wouldn’t surprise me if the team is about .500 next year too. Nelson is a poor defender and while efficient on offense his style often pushed other players into smaller catch and shoot roles. Collier IMO is the best of the departing bunch and CR never played him enough. Brandt while solid offensively for a college post wasn’t a great rim protector. Moreland while capable of gaudy stats still makes the game 4 on 5 on the offensive end. I am not saying CR is a good coach or that he will suddenly develop guys but I do think the talent drop off next year wont be big.

I think Cooke and Duvivier can make up a fair bit for Nelson’s wing scoring. I don’t really see anyone making up for Collier’s efficient and reliable post scoring though. The only thing is CR never really fully utilized Collier’s skill set so that might make the loss appear to be lesser than it is. It is sad because CR has really overcome a lot of the problems that everyone says OSU has (practice court, more relevance, better players) he just can’t do the most important part which is actually coach the game.
I was always impressed with Collier’s ability to score when getting pounded and groped under the basket. He cleaned up other’s messes, which will be missed. I think LMW will pick up a lot of the points, also.
I think CR will slow the tempo down like the first year he came on. Keep the game in the 50-60 range. That will help if the new guys don’t step up the scoring and the on ball defense should be better.
The non conference will probably feature no power conference teams so they can hopefully rack up wins.
If Gomis or N’Diaye can contribute any scoring, that would go a long ways. They will be an upgrade over Collier and Brandt as rim defenders.
Brandt was a bad player.Every time he touched the ball something bad seemed to happen. Just zero savvy and awareness from that guy; so glad to see him go.
Brandt was bad when he didn’t have a plan once he got the ball. When he hesitated he seemed to get tunnel vision. When he moved, shot or passed decisively once he got the ball he was fine. But he did weird things with if he held it for more than two counts.
Brandt shot 53% from the field and 37% from three. He was a pretty good offensive player. Defensively he was poor. Was never a strong suit of his. His lack of rim protection was even more obvious when Moreland was out of the game. Decent player who Oregon State will miss on the offensive end next year. Spacing will be a significant issue. Having 4 guys who can step out and knock down the three helped out guys like Nelson as far as driving lanes go. Moreland(assuming he stays), Gomis and N’Diaye are all guys who cannot knock down jumpers. Floor spacing is gonna be an issue
Brandt also turned it over like 90% of the time he got double teamed. CR will go to a 3 guard lineup next year.
But who will take up Nelson’s finger kiss chest thump at the free throw line? That will be a huge loss! I’ve started doing that before doing some menial task, like taking out the trash, when directed by the female Beavergopher unit.
And we need to find new guys who can make those clutch shots in the closing minutes, that won all those close games…..
All Brandt really had to do was utlize a v-cut when receiving the ball then reverse pivot to the ball side while looking for weak side help from either the two or three man depending on whether or not the opposing five man had posted up his man. Duh… it’s so freaking obvious. JB

Riley talks about how Read taking up a slot as SpTms coach forces the use of GA’s Tavita and Lyle to be the direct hands on guys for TE’s and QB’s (overseen by the new OC). Later on he praises Read’s detail orientation. Then, and this was news to me, he says Read uses the rest of the staff to help coach each SpTms unit; says there are regular meetings with everyone involved with each of the various units.
Not only does Read take up a lot of the budget and other coaches time, but with all these meetings he may be one of the reasons we are always reminded that it takes years to learn Riley’s system(s).
Teams which don’t have a dedicated SpTms coach use that slot for other areas, even saw one mention of a team having two LB coaches…one for inside and another for outside.
All this adds to my feeling that OSU isn’t getting much bang for the buck spent on Read.
PS: Riley says good things about Tyler Anderson. Hope this translates into a few more touches for that kid.

FWIW Here’s a practice report off of pure orange. The source is rumored to be a former Beav within the last 15 years with NFL experience:
I didn’t watch much of the defense.
I think that Garrett is a good hire. Interacts well with the players, and his attention to detail is at a much higher level than his predecessor. All the doubts and concerns I had about Garrett were eliminated after one practice.
After the special teams session that they typically open a practice with, they broke down into groups for skill stations and they’d rotate amongst the various stations. All of the stations were fundamentals that have been needed to be addressed for a LONG time. Basically, everything that I ???ed and moaned about last year were worked on in Day 1 of spring ball. Doing things the “right way” is now serious business. Footwork, blocking, tackling, body position, position of the ball against the body, etc. From the perspective of what was covered in the practice, I’ve never been more content and reassured as I was today.
No slow developing running plays at all. Lots of work with the tight ends. Fullbacks look like their role has been expanded.
Hunter Jarmon is going to be a great WR. Bobby Keenan was playing almost exclusively with the first team at left OT (Harlow at left guard) and Keenan surprised me with how well he moves and his solid technique overall.
And last but not least… Del Rio is easily the second best QB on the team. It’s not like you’re watching practice and thinking, “It looks like it’s going to be a qb battle for 2015.” HUGE gap in footwork, arm strength and accuracy between Del Rio and VanderVeen / Kempt. Luke’s the real deal.
I’ll watch more of the defense on Wednesday.

Why wouldn’t these things be addressed in past years? Is it because the coaches know more in their little fingers than any one of us trolls hanging out in our grandma’s basement could ever know about such an extremely complicated game… and all we had to do was have faith in them?

I hope they make me the fool for thinking they’re going to be a seven or eight win team max. Again, I see plenty of talent on the team, but I doubt they’ll be given the tools to use it based on past performance by the coaches. I would be one happy fool. But why did we waste our passions on this team in past years if the answer to all our incredulous questions is pointed out here as a definitive “no?”
I disagree.
I think many things needed to be addressed, and that’s a concern. But this team has enough talent in key positions to overcome even coaching as bad as we saw last year.
An example of things which need to be addressed may be ball security. Here is a link to Woods saying they had a 15 minute exercise today which focused on ball security. At about 1:43 he says, “That’s the first time I’ve ever did that”.
Hmmmm…….can that be possible, never? I hope I’m overreacting. At any rate, it is good to see an emphasis on fundamentals, and reports are that fundamentals were addressed in several areas.

long time reader; first time poster.
i’d like to start of by saying that I unequivocal agree with the general consensus about Coach Rob and the limitations of his abilities as a coach, but I’d like to play devils advocate.
Coach Rob isn’t a “bad” coach; he’s just trying to coach outside his ability.
He did an amazing job in 2008-09 coaching a team of rag-tag players to a season that NO ONE expected. In the 2009-10 season he increased his conference record by one win, and finished for 5th (although this was a much weaker conference than the year previous).
It was at this point that Coach Rob started trying to coach outside his ability.
To attract the “higher level” recruits that Coach Rob has managed to pull into Corvallis he has done two things.
1. The promise of not redshirting.
2. The promise of an up-tempo offense.
The combination of these two things attracted some upper echelon players (according to recruiting websites). To keep these promises to his players, Coach Rob changed his coaching philosophy, and tried to implement a style that was far beyond his comfort zone.
I guess what I’m trying to say is this;
If Coach Rob intends to salvage his coaching career, he will go back to the 2008-10 version of the team. Slow Princeton offense. Trapping Defense. 1-3-1. The only difference between then and now is now he has better players. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if OSU is middle of the PAC next year, IF Coach Rob reverts back to his roots.
Will this happen? Only time will tell.
That’s fine to land on a coaching philosophy and stick to it, but if you’re still middle of the pack after six or seven years it’s still not getting the program anywhere. CR has had plenty of time to figure all of this out. He better hope his incoming players can defend, make free throws in the clutch and secure the ball or the end is coming.
I don’t mind the Princeton and the Beavers still run it a lot in the half court. We actually had a fairly efficient offense. What I don’t like is the 1-3-1 as a base D, I don’t think it is going to ever work for a full season in the P12.
Ok…..I see this quote about Garrett in an O-live bit–
We’re in search of the perfect play,” Garrett said. “The perfect rep. The perfect technique. The perfect game. We’re never going to get there, but it’s the pursuit of that which is always the carrot that makes you play better.”
But wait…..how can he coach under Riley…….who always says the team and players need to find their identity… and the team may not want to be perfect, and players may be satisfied with so-so performance. Doesnt sound to me like Garrett fits in.

Additionally, the comments from Pure Orange sound positive – fundamentals, ball security details, details, no slow developing running plays, more FB involvement….
What if Garret address Chris Brown’s ball security issues, and we see Brown breaking off quick hitting, long runs betwixt the tackles?!? What if Tyler Anderson is fully recovered and not forgotten?
All of this of course must be in the context of the first day of spring ball…but it sounds like a significant improvement over Langsdorf. Hey Giants, good luck on improving Eli’s game….suckers.

I am a little stuck in the past with that comment. Lexus did overhaul their whole line a couple years ago, and now their engineering is on par with Germany. But their look is still inconsistent. And prior to a couple years ago they never made an attractive car.
Okay – I’ll say it – and mentioning “old dog” brought it to mind. I had to look twice at the recent photo in the Oregonian – that’s Riley? Maybe it was bad lighting.

I spent a couple of minutes looking for it but, of course I can’t find it now – it was at the beginning of just prior to spring practice – he wasn’t wearing a baseball cap – which makes a lot of difference.

As much as I hated USC firing Kiffin, I think I love Saban’s hiring of the louse even more.
Thinking about it some more I think hiring an experienced guy at OC was the right call. An up and comer would be nice but I think Riley would be more hesitant to listen to their philosophies. Sounds like the new OC is a bit of new blood but most importantly his ideas are being implemented. At least that is what is sounds like to me.
I don’t know if I would call someone who has never been an OC “experienced.” He has also not been a coach outside of the small circle of friends with whom Riley associates. But that may be the very reason he’s comfortable listening to Garrett and implementing his ideas… other than it’s an OC’s and head coach’s job to communicate in such a way.
What he does provide is a set of new eyes who can see what’s wrong. We’ve all seen what’s wrong because we also have eyes… which have seen good football. Coaches spend a stupid amount of time buried in the game, in the next game. They don’t really have the time to come up for air and watch other teams or other levels of their own sport. And when they do, I would imagine they want to turn off the coach-mind and just be a fan for the little time they get to be one.
So hires like Perry and Garrett do provide perspectives from a game where fundamentals are taken for granted. When they step in and watch tape of games we’ve all watched and commented on ourselves, there has to be a wtf? moment for them.

It is pretty much self-proving by these events that winning b-ball games was NEVER the primary reason CR was hired. He was hired primarily to be BHO’s brother-in-law, and since he’s still doing a good job at that, there’s no reason to fire him. Plus, if they fire him, they (Ray, BCD, and OSU generally) would then have to take the national media and PR hit for for firing the first brother-in-law, something Ray and BCD don’t have the cojones to face up to.
