Home Football Who Will Replace Brandin Cooks?

Who Will Replace Brandin Cooks?

115

Richard Mullaney is a good receiver, but lacking game changing ability like Cooks, he’s more of a complimentary receiver than a true #1. When Markus Wheaton moved on to the NFL, Cooks was the clear successor. With Cooks moving onto the NFL, the situation is more murky.

My candidate is Hunter Jarmon

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/448909/highlights/11418374

I had him ranked as a 5-star recruit and the #2 guy in the 2013 class.

There hasn’t been much written about him over the past year plus, but I’m thinking that changes this Fall. Many people like Victor Bolden, but I think Bolden is more suited as a 3rd WR/slot guy than a #1 guy on the outside. Jarmon, Mullaney, and Bolden is the best lineup. Malik Gilmore is listed #1 on the depth chart right now, but he’s not a game changer. He’s more of a large, possession WR in the Kevin Cummings mold. What makes Mullaney great, over say someone like Gilmore (who has the same size), is that the former has tremendous body control/agility. Gilmore doesn’t have any exceptional skill set. He is a fine backup but Jarmon is the better talent. Riley needs to groom Jarmon to take Cook’s role, which means he very likely will not.

    • I think Hass was a better athlete than Mullaney. He could deal with press coverage better and still get open deep despite high end speed.

Mullaney may develop those attributes, but hasn’t shown it yet.

  1. Mullaney is the most experienced of the bunch, but he’s rarely healthy. Always seems to have a nagging injury that prevents him from playing at full speed.

  2. Maybe Jarmon for the explosive play, but I’d go with Mullaney for the win. With the run game better (hopefully), the Beavs just need hands over speed. With Mannion feeling less pressure to score 9 points per pass, he’ll be able to be that much more accurate with the ball.

  3. Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

FERPA does not apply to anything except students’ educations. Sports are not education. Coaches and personnel are not students.

    This is complete bullshit.
    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/06/oregon_state_self-reports_12_s.html

It’s not as bullshit as Nikegon does on a daily basis. At least the bean counter is transparent about the exact same subsidies Nikegon rolls into different categories in order to claim they’re self-sufficient.

Yeah Nikegon… you guys have been worse at subsidizing athletics than OSU has been every year since 1995. I giggle any time a Duck makes the claim their AD is self-sufficient… so very much a lie. But we don’t expect Ducks to understand reality. they think they’re crows. They like shiny objects.

  4. Vandy only scores in one inning. 5 free passes and an error help put 9 runs across in the 3rd. Vandy with just 6 hits. Virginia with 15 hits but only 8 runs. Game 1 to Vandy.

  5. I like these opportunities for Mannion, not just for the recognition, but the learning opportunities it affords him.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/06/oregon_state_beavers_quarterba_6.html

Watching some youtube game summaries of last year, Mannion it seems like the next step he needs to take is on earlier release, better ball placement (in the hands, not the “catch radius”) and hitting WRs in stride…like Garret said, he could have had a lot more yards last year.

I remember Wheaton saying one of the the big adjustments in the NFL is that “when you turn, the ball is there. In college, you see it leave the quarterback’s hand.”

  6. Congratulations to Jack on rejoining the work force. I hope his five year search yields a perfect match. We, at AB, will have to get by without the ten or twenty posts that used to fill Jack’s working hours.

If you find yourself in Eugene swing the Starbucks on Coburg Road and support Jack with a generous tip. JB

    • That reminds me. I need to consolidate about 20 Dutch Bros. punch cards.

Is there a Starbucks on Coburg Road? Inside one of the grocery stores maybe? Unfortunately I’m not cute enough to be hired at a Starbucks.

    • Oh… I almost forgot. Something about how long it takes boner to respond to blah blah bait or some such blah blah blah. Chuckle blah blah… or something like that.

      • Hypocrites.

It’s always funny when someone who doesn’t have a degree from your school (boner) makes that… umm… joke.

I happen to think you’re correct in thumbing it down. It’s about as banal as you can get. But the discord between your thumbing it up for one and down for the other exposes your intelligence for all to see.

  7. Brandin got too big for his britches and now he’s high cotton. I’m a hankerin’ for some new blood. It’s hotter than a goat’s butt in a pepper patch down here, and if you’uns don’t like it go stick some pie in your yappers.

    • I don’t know what being too big for one’s britches has to do with being [in] high cotton, but he certainly has become wealthy.

And why would any of us care if it’s hotter than a billy goat in a pepper patch down wherever? That’s why we don’t choose to live in the stupid ass part of the country.

        • I lived there. Everything but the food and some music is stupid. And too much of the former is stupid, which covers A LOT of people down there. But in this particular discussion we’re talking about weather, and it is particularly stupid. I will never ever miss the $400-500 monthly air conditioning bills. And those prices were 15 years ago.

        • Need I post educational statistics on every single level for the South compared to the rest of the US… let alone the rest of the world? Would that be definitive enough?

        • The south is always rated as having the most unhappiest people in the country by far. I’m guessing it has something to with the fact that they are also the most religious people in the country by far.

          • That’s one factor.

That they are stupid as a whole is another factor.

Wait… that might be the whole.

            Hmmm…..

I guess it’s easy to be a big brain in a small pond.

          • I concur that the south has a higher percentage of idiots and patsies but to say that religion is the driving factor is a gross exaggeration. But what an ignorant statement by a seemingly intelligent individual. Those who don’t believe as you do are fools? Maybe you are the fool. Is it really that big of a stretch to assume intelligent design versus pure evolution? Seems like you are as ignorant as the people you are insulting. There is no proof either way, so please reserve your hatred for the priest that molested you.

          • Now that I am trying to parse your words… I don’t think you’re saying what you mean to say. If you were, you could do it without sounding like a moron.

Intelligent design? Are you fucking serious? Where the hell did that even come into question?

If I were to believe in a god of any kind, then he (AND IT IS ALWAYS A HE) would damn well be smart enough to come up with something as elegant as evolution in his spare time… that which we would call an eternity. What kind of stupid-ass fucking stick-in-the-mud moron must my god be if Intelligent Design was what he came up with? What clown even invented that brain-dead fairy tale? It has to be just the dumbest creation there ever was.

Maybe you ought to give that you think is your god some fucking credit instead of thinking he’s some dumb-ass who came up with Intelligent Design.

Oh yeah… the eye. Just so you don’t try that stupidity here, even semi-intelligent people know about the eye.

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlJaIREGnaM

          • Btw… don’t ever come around with any argument which in toto is, “I don’t understand it, therefore, it’s magic!”

That nonsense rightly gets scorned at every turn.

          • I guess in my genuine surprise that anyone here would pretend to conflate Intelligent Design with anything remotely resembling intelligent, I never did answer that question.

Q: “Is it really that big of a stretch to assume intelligent design versus pure evolution?”
A: “That big a stretch” doesn’t even begin to describe the galaxy-wide chasm between ID and science. ID is by its own definition a lack of understanding of science. It actually ignores science in order to say that science is incomplete (although, it may have been invented by the aforementioned clown while science was still struggling to define certain aspects). In a 1+1=2 world, ID is now “43 minus 89 does not equal 7, therefore, because I’m writing it out instead of using those evil “math” characters, rainbows are pretty.”

A2: Yes… it really is more than that big a stretch. It’s not as valid as ludicrous would be.

          • Well stated Jack!! I too trust science. Science is the search for truth, that is the effort to understand the world: it involves the rejection of bias, of dogma, of revelation, but not the rejection of morality.

          • You are a fool to believe that science and god cannot coexist. I have no interest in spending any time debating the man that has never been wrong. The reason this site has degraded to 5-6 posters is partially due to you jack. I used to enjoy this site but the constant attacks are getting quite old. I feel sad for you and all of the other posters of this blog that prefer to attack one another rather than engaging in an intelligent debate. I have never seen someone post as many comments to their own comments as you, likely indicating some deeper psychological issues. I know you can’t get anyone to follow your own blog(as previously demonstrated) but highjacking another blog is truly pathetic. I will no longer read this site but I’m sure you will have several comments to this and likely your own comments.

          • Interesting… you attack me and others and then throw out Intelligent Design and think there is an intelligent discussion to be had after doing so.

And then you think you’re being reasonable and calm while chastising me for what you began… even going so far as to pretend you have some knowledge of psychology… because ethical medical professionals make studies and diagnoses through blog posts based on fights they pick.

As for your first sentence, “You are a fool to believe that science and god cannot coexist.” That’s pretty much what I said. In fact, I said if a god existed he wouldn’t be stupid and make up some looney tune about magic filling the gaps that we as lay people don’t understand. Hell, ID doesn’t need a god. It can be an atheism ideal in the strictest sense. And any atheist who found him or herself trying to conflate ID with science would also be a moron to the Nth degree. There is absolutely zero chance for an intelligent discussion to occur when ID is introduced. It is to science as suburban kids wearing caps sideways and saying “yo” are to inner city hip-hop artists.

Now… if you want to talk creation stories you would hear a much different tune from me. The myriad of wonderful stories can be a talking point involving comparison, contrast, legacy, incubation, cultural and natural influences, et cetera. And that’s just what can be discussed within one creation story’s life. There are hundreds of them. And each of them impacts each of us in some way.

          • I believe he is saying just that.

More power to you… and stop proselytizing… if your belief allows you to do so. You will find you have more time being with those you love if you stop telling people they’re fools for not believing what you believe… and throwing in dumb idea like ID to make you look the fool.

          • You’ll find this list interesting then:

            http://www.cnbc.com/id/34526151

It was the only list I saw that popped up after a whole 30 seconds of googling that referenced an at least partially objective study. You’ll notice none of the ten unhappiest states are in the south.

          • I’m skeptical of the original claim as well as any study which claims to objectify happiness. I always refer to the customer satisfaction polls conducted for the airline industry every year. The airline people hate the most is always British Airways. The airline people love the most is British Airways. And second place on both lists isn’t even close.

            Besides, isn’t ignorance bliss?

          • One does need to note that any objective ranking of states by education on the K-12 level puts Oregon squarely in shit. We’re around 35-40 and in the middle of a bunch of states… ummm… northernly challenged. There is a discrepancy between north and south and east and west within Oregon itself. But the demographics don’t warrant too much of a shift due to outliers.

There is also the push-back against teaching to a standardized test going on. But again, either do it well or don’t do it.

          • And a closer look at the causation puts California in the educational sewer due to Prop 13 and Oregon in the same place even quicker because of Measure 5.

            Yay us!

  8. I say Jarmon or Xavier Hawkins.. If people were raving about Bolden in fall camp last year i’m eager to see what they have to say about Hawkins. He looks much more explosive than Bolden on tape

  9. Boldin will be ok to good because of work ethic and guts. Jarmon will be needed. I always liked the potential of Jones. But he is better suited for track. The Texas kid, if he qualifies, could be a sleeper. Now that Perry is out, I bet some guys are changing their tune about Wark. He could be the type of guy that I have hoped for over the last two years that can motion and lead into a hole to engage linebackers, ends and safeties. This position does not have to overpower. He just needs to be big enough, fast enough and strong enough to occupy and turn a defender. If this can happen, the running game is on in 2014.

  10. OT – Top 14 coaches for ’14. Three Pac 12 Coaches, including a certain bike-rider is #14.

    http://www.nfl.com/photoessays/0ap2000000360745

On topic – no mention of Villamin on this post. Is he unlikely to ever qualify? Supposedly 240 lbs, the guy sounds like he could almost be a hybrid TE/WR and a match up problem. I suppose with the “complex playbook” and lack of practice time, even if he qualifies he’s a year out from pushing for playing time.

    • There is that “complex playbook” thing again. With Garrett’s reported fixation on details, will this become even more of an issue, or will his approach be to install only limited portions of the playbook and train for precise execution? The answer may become most apparent when we hear his comments after a few games.

I hate becoming optimistic this early in the cycle (often hard to be optimistic later!), but with the way the D is shaping up and with Garrett’s influence it really is possible the Beavs will surprise many…isn’t it?
Of course, Read will likely make his usual contribution, ugh. Then, there is always that (oh) Riley Factor!

  11. OT…

A semi-interesting read on how Midwest schools (Iowa) who aren’t Ohio State, Michigan, or Michigan State recruit athletes or try to locate and bring in athletes with intangibles to their program.

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/11128382/kirk-ferentz-iowa-hawkeyes-take-moneyball-approach-recruiting

I was hoping the article would include a few more specifics in football as to how this actually applies to Billy Beane’s advanced metrics and statistical analysis to scout players to compete with large-market baseball teams…like 5’10 linebacks, who run a 40 in this amount of time, tend to react to play action in a shorter amount of time, than blah blah blah. It just seems to note players overlooked by big market teams have a chip on their shoulder and with in-state athletes alike, will all around play harder…etc…etc.

Can Football even be measured in this way? Where subtle details and percentages account for potential performance on the field? I guess finding diamonds in the rough based on math and statistics?

  12. OT… sort of…
    http://www.usctrojans.com/blog/2014/06/4-year-scholarships-for-revenue-sports.html

I really really like this policy. I hope they put it in a binding contract along with the NLI and GIA a recruit has to sign on signing day (or anytime a kid signs a NLI. We at OSU see our revenue athletes finish their degrees in the case of injury. And that is not the norm. I believe Nikegon does the same. So good on both Oregon schools for honoring the commitment made by PSAs when they are not allowed to have representation in order to sign a life-altering contract.

But this goes a step beyond that. This says that a coach sitting in your living room will honor you as much as you honor the school with which you sign. So often I hear people disparaging SAs because they change their minds after the fact. But the schools themselves are almost never held accountable. Too often we hear about kids “not wanting to put in the HARD WORK REQUIRED” to be a part of a team. That’s an immediate lie when I read it… every time. Almost always it’s because the kid has been told he will not be granted another year of scholarship, and he better go find somewhere else to play. That’s true at OSU, at Nikegon and at USC almost all the time. There are recruiting fiascoes to be had when talking about certain programs when a coaching change takes place… like somewhere’s hoops program had a couple years ago. And you will see the stupids on the message boards draw out all the same canards when they leave because it would behoove the school to be dissociated immediately from these kids. So that could be sticky if some kid fell into that category with this new policy.

But I love the policy on the face of it. I wish for us to do it now and immediately for all PSAs and SAs, not just revenue sports. I know it would be difficult to work out the numbers in sports where ships are shared and where SAs leave early (potentially… like baseball). But those contracts can reflect their respective sports’ conditions.

This is a first step, and it’s good. We need to do the same.

  13. Definitely OT… I agree with this practice.
    http://www.kval.com/news/local/Refuse-a-alcohol-breath-test-July-4-Expect-to-give-blood-264637981.html

I think the BAC is a lazy inaccurate excuse for cops to be lazy. The blood test should be the rule for DUII. And it should be done professionally with no questions about chain of custody. Make no mistake. DUII is one of the worst things you can do as a human. You’re not some “good” person making a mistake. You’re someone committing a crime. And you should be treated as such.

    • The girls pouring water on Mandy nearly clocked her in the head with that bucket…(only had to watch it about 8 times in slo-mo to catch that)

Rumor has it, Riley is discussing not allowing live tackling in practice again this summer due to lack of depth on the team with all of the attrition. Nigel Burton has Portland State licking their chops…

Losing some very good developmental prospects. Not good. They didn’t allow live tackling against EWU either.

    • Surprised to hear his name in the discussion even. Also saw a mock draft with Moreland getting picked around 58/59. Do we see any Beavs selected tonight?

Another addition to second-round sleeper club: Devon Collier; SF/PF from Oregon State who could be draft & stash. Willing to go to Europe.

Devon Collier, formerly of Oregon State, is quietly creating a buzz as second-rounder. Played well in Puerto Rico and workouts.

  16. Heard back from Coach Riley on tartan endzones and received some good nuggets.

The original email to Deputy AD Mark Massari with Coach Riley cc’ed:

    Dear Mark,

Congrats on your new position as Deputy Athletics Director at Oregon State! As you will play a key role in marketing, building a beaver brand and involving fan interests I wanted to take this chance to enquire about a topic many in Beaver Nation have been very excited about.

I and many other passionate Oregon State fans of Beaver Nation are very interested and excited about the idea of more interesting and bolder endzones. In particular, tartan endzones have been much anticipated by many fans and I know Tinker Hatfield’s original sketches showed a plaid “tartan-like” design for the endzones.

After two years waiting for the rebranding last year’s efforts for the endzones seemed very conservative and you could even see through the paint to prior years’ lettering. Having worked in a senior level role at Nike I believe they would be able to help deliver tartan endzones without much difficulty.

Having some fun with the endzone design whether tartan or checkerboard like OSU had back during the Giant Killer days just seems like a no brainer that would excite the fanbase, enroll some new fans in-state and across the nation and even help pick up recruiting a bit.

I just was very much curious if upgrading the endzones was on your radar and being considered for this year or next, and if not much yet, sincerely ask that you give it real consideration as I feel strongly that it would give a great boost to the gameday atmosphere and help sell hundreds more season tickets at a time when we are not selling out most games. I know I would quickly return as a season ticket holder if such designs were announced as it shows an engaged effort to energize the base and be creative instead of stale. It would show Oregon State is ready to be on the national map and capture more eyeballs and hearts.

Thank you so much for your time and if at all possible a brief response on whether you have or will give such designs consideration for future endzones would be appreciated beyond measure.

    Sincerely,
    Class of 2001 Alum

    The reply from Coach Riley:

    2001 Alum,

Thanks for your enthusiasm about the tartan endzones. I think it’s a great idea. A few years back I pushed for a return to the checkerboard.

This will need to go through our administration. Bobby D and Mark Massari would be good guys to talk with about it.

    Keep up the good thoughts.

    Mike

    The takeaway:

Riley wanted checkerboard endzones to be ready a couple years ago when they would have been an overwhelming popular hit with the fanbase. With the rebranding being pushed a year back BDC must have had him wait for those efforts to be finalized. Problem is after two years and much anticipation, endzones that were hand painted at the time so new creative ones could be installed after the rebrand, were instead made ultra conservative by BDC decision apparently.

The question: Does Massari have bold enough plans to enhance the Beaver brand and fan interest and involvement? Or while BDC is still around will things remain too predictable and safe in a kinda boring way?

I like that new uni combos will be used this year but if Riley wanted a return to checkerboard not long ago I could see a great option to use either pure black and orange checkerboard or tartan endzones and then put ‘Oregon State’ below the beaver at midfield. This would help sell our brand in multiple ways and give a great design aesthetic that shows exactly who we are in a new way most teams aren’t doing by both logo and name at center field like the Nike design showed upon the rebrand release and also more nationally relevant endzones. The name below the logo also better balances the logo and better sells the beaver brand as clearly Oregon State.

Anyway, hopefully when VFC is upgraded they do upgraded endzones at the same time and Riley gets close to what he wanted recently. Seems bad that BDC overruled Riley on his program when Riley was spot on about bolder endzones enhancing the atmosphere and Beaver football brand. They would have and would prove very popular I believe and generate increased fan interest and support for the program and make Oregon State more known nationally as an upcoming program.

    • Checkerboard endzones would be killer. Have to agree with Riley on this. BDC blowin’ it sounds like. Tartan would be sweet as well and liven up Reser game days. Maybe Massari will take the lead and get something done to step things up.

      • The only thing keeping me from buying season tickets and flying out to Oregon for every game is the lack of Tartan end zones. “Just Do It.”

        • EMAIL… October 10, 2014. Hey Leroy, I know the Beavs are struggling and its going to rain, but how about heading down to Corvallis for the Utah game?

Forget the game… I’m really excited to see the new tartan end zones. Let me know and I’ll try to get some tickets. Tickets are tough to get this year mainly due to the excitement over the new end zones.

    • This is a joke, right? Just a poor attempt at satire? The end zone pattern would sell hundreds of tickets?

I’m not sure whether to be embarassed for you or scared at the amount of importance you place on field painting.

God speed on your life-altering endeavor, young man. There is nothing else worth fighting for.

New commit. Not sure exactly who yet

    • That is funny. But some of the matrices would be drawn out in flat lines if proportionally drawn. The Nick Cage one stands out the most. it’s pretty much a flat line even trying to superimpose it upon the other.

But I think the humor is worthy. It’s just as funny when such correlations are drawn within the world of econ analysis. These are seen every day in one form or the other all the time and believed by too many. And the “grain of salt” adage is rarely followed.

  19. Interesting, Connor at the Oregonian says that the odds of little Tinkle and Stephen Thompson Jr. becoming Beavs are “very very high”. That would be nice to have both.

  20. I highly recommend the Lego Movie.

I was expecting another corporate vehicle to derive profits from the demands of children off their parents. But it’s acually really funny and well played. I’m not a fan of anything Will Farrell has done previously, but this is briliance.
