Home Football USC Week

USC Week

65

People want a new thread, but I don’t have time right now so I will keep it short.

The Beavs played their most complete game of the year on Saturday, and based on what I have seen of USC (2 quarters), the Beavs should have at least be competitive on Saturday. If the Beavs were home I’d be thinking upset. On the road probably not. But big picture here is that USC isn’t that great. The big problem is that OSU’s front four likely won’t get any pressure on Kessler and he’ll pick on the secondary. Other than that, the matchup is pretty even. I’d like to see the Beavs blitz LBs for a change, especially on obvious passing downs. They’ll have to take calculated gambles like that to get pressure.

On offense, I think there will be some jitters for the young guys (conference play, ESPN, road game, etc) and expect a bad first quarter. After that it should get better. Beavs don’t have any clear advantages on offense so they’ll need to execute at a high level to stay in the game. The -12 line seems a bit high to me. I’d say -7 or -10 would be more in line with reality, but we’ll see.

It was nice to see Hunter Jarmon come up big. I had him targeted as the guy who needed to replace Cooks, and also had him as a 5-star prospect and 2nd best in the 2013 class. I heard Xavier Hawkins was activated to replace Bolden. That is a big downgrade as far as I’m concerned. I had Hawkins as a 2-star. Many people in TN (and Beaver fans) raved about him, so we’ll see on Saturday. I’d be thrilled to be wrong, but he looked like Malcolm Marable part II to me.

I’m thinking something like 27-20 USC but would not be surprised if the Beavs are in this game in the 4th quarter. This is more about USC being slightly overrated and having more pressure/more to lose than thinking the Beavs are a top 20 team. The Beavs right now are an average team (top 40) that is executing at a fairly low level (but improving week to week). I do like how each opponent the Beavs have played has been progressively better. That’ll help, though USC is quite a jump from SDSU. Mannion better protect the ball.

  1. the historic pattern is that OSU’s best chances to win vs. SC (home or there) come in the first year of a coaching regime at SC. Going all the way back to Prothro vs McKay in 1960. Which makes the 2001 loss to the Pete Carroll team all the more galling (and along with the Utah game in 2008 the game that kept me tossing and turning all night in the wake of it)

  2. I think USC is going to come out pissed from their collapse against BC. We all know what happened the last time we played a Sark coached team. I could see this one as a blowout or a close game. But either way I am chalking this one up as a loss. I just can’t get a read on this team right now after playing 3 mediocre to terrible opponents. SDSU was obviously the best of the bunch and the D played well. Run the damn ball effectively and the beavs will have a chance. If Mannion is forced to win the game with his arm, all bets are off. I’m thinking 24-13ish. Beavs have not won at the Colisuem since I’ve been alive. And my retired father was 11 years old at that time. Yikes

  3. Go Beavs!

It’s tough to get a read on this game, much like his tenure at Washington, we don’t know what what kind of Sark led team we will see.

  4. Haha.

The Detroit Lions feel good after winning their second game in three weeks, but have taken yet another injury blow. And this is a big one.

  5. “Beavs don’t have any clear advantages on offense so they’ll need to execute at a high level to stay in the game. ”

Always a challenge for Riley teams and a bodes poorly for Saturday. That’s why I think they can’t win without turnovers, they need them to keep USC at bay when the offense goes through dead periods.

Also, the O can’t be as practical as last year, with USC’s D sitting on the routes like they broke from OSU’s offensive huddle…

As Jack suggests, it just may be time. I mean, how many 50+ year losing streaks on an opponents field does a program need?

I will be in Seattle, and should be able to find it on a screen given the Saturday Pac-12 slate…

  6. Were doing an inbred tailgate Saturday… Some of my High School friends that went to SC mixed with some OSU alums that will be in town.. Should be a wild day!!

    • Does the city still allow the parking/tailgate bbq by homeowners in the neighborhood? I hung out with a family there (after paying to park on their lawn and giving them $20 for what seemed like unlimited food) and had the best sweet potato pie I’ve ever eaten in my life some 20 years ago.

      • Hahahaha yes.. That is probably the only redeeming thing about games at the Coliseum..

You can park on some random Joe’s front lawn.. The only bad part is most of the good folks (of all races) who lived there have been replaced by low life degenerates.. I was a kid when the Raiders were still in LA in the 90’s ( I’m a Rams fan) but my dads best friend was a die hard Raider. We went to several games a year and we would park in the same peoples yard nearly every time. It was pretty cool.

  7. Regarding “XHawk,” if he is Marable II, no point in redshirting him I guess.

I am interested to see how the WRs perform. I expect Mullaney to be highly motivated, and we’ll see if that translates to him being able to get open. I like Dockery as an “X” factor if is hip pointer doesn’t limit him. Physically, Villamin should be able to compete against USC, but it sounds like he needs to catch the ball and not become ‘Boom II. No more bad sequels please.

A lot of these California kids on OSU’s squad will be extra-motivated. Maybe Grimble will show something given that he’s facing his old team.

Watching the SDSU highlights, Mannion’s improved footwork is very noticeable and it looks like Garret’s coaching really translated to game time; quick back into the drops, moving laterally to buy time, keeping his eyes downfield while doing so, and throwing darts. That 49-yard bomb to Dockery was underthrown and could have been a TD if he led him some more, but that’s quibbling a bit. I think scouts must have liked what they saw of Mannion last Saturday.

  8. The common storyline for Oregon State is that we haven’t played anyone yet and we just don’t know what to make of the Beavs. Last week it was the same thing but we will find out more against an underrated SDSU. Funny how the Beavers can take care of business and have it ignored the way it has been. The defense has been impressive and the offense is getting better.

On the other hand, the common storyline for USC is that they have been really good demonstrated by their win at Stanford. I would hardly consider that win a good showing by USC.

USC put up over 50 against Fresno State, but so did Utah and Nebraska. Boston College had no problem running an offense against USC. I just don’t think they are a very good team this year.

I think USC is going to have trouble running the ball against the Beavs.

    31-17 Oregon State.

    • Personally, no matter how good the Beavs may be I like them better as underdogs. If they keep winning the hype will come. Let’s stay under the radar as long as possible. Riley coached teams don’t have the best track record as favorites with that added pressure.

  9. On the fashion front, which of course becomes more important for college football teams each year, white pants/black shirt/white helmet are the key for OSU this Saturday….

  10. On the radio a little while ago they were talking about an angle to this USC game I hadn’t thought about. USC has been hearing about Mannion climbing the stats ladder, and the 2 guys ahead of him are Trojans. (Palmer and Barkley)
USC’s defense might have a little extra motivation to prevent pass completions Saturday, not that they shouldn’t have had enough motivation already.

  11. Apparently sexual violence has suddenly become something we should be concerned with on college campuses nationwide. What better way to combat sexual violence than with a catchy slogan and campaign for schools to join and pretend like theyre trying to do something about it.

OSU is among the schools to join the “It’s on us” campaign.

Of course the first thing that came to my mind is how easily somebody could add the letter “T” to that slogan and completely ruin the message. I’ve got problems….
