See No Reason to Hire Brady Hoke

543

Per Mamma Machado, “Brady Hoke and Bob DeCarolis did have overlapping careers at Michigan.  DeCarolis and Hoke both worked in Ann Arbor between 1995 and 1999 when Bob left for Oregon State.”

She writes this as if it’s interesting. It’s not. It’s terrifying, though. Seems like Mamma Machado is trying to send an admonition that it will be Hoke.

Am I reading into it too much?

Does anyone want Hoke? Here is his terrible resume.

In my mind, Hoke is a dud. A retread on par with Riley, a guy in BDC’s good ol’ boy network…just more of the same.

  1. I think Jeff is right. I’m big on trends/patterns. The public face of the search will be a re-tread which will facilitate some stealth discussions. That said, I’m an enthusiast for Schiano. Spent a lot of time hanging out with Pete Carroll this past year on how to become a better coach and rebound from failure. If it is Hoke I think, on balance, it’s an upgrade over Riley. Certainly far preferable than Tedford

    • Friends with Scott Sanders

Sanders is OSU Alum, local developer (they also have business dealings together), coaches at CV AND his son Tanner is ON the football team

      Boom

        • Hoke was the hot name when Michigan hired him. A LOT of programs wanted Hoke. He turned around two awful programs and then went to Michigan. It didn’t work and some of that was never having a decent QB. However, what would be worrying about him was he got talent but did not develop a lot of the talent.

          • The AD at MInn tried to hire him and thank god he blew us off. He got the Mich gig because he coached there and was seen by their admin as getting the culture there. A Michigan Man

          • with an Axl Rose rasp. Dude sounds like he just took the biggest bong hit of his life or smoked a carton of camel non filtered

    • I think he reason bobby d would be attracted to Hoke is that Michigan is still being paid 3m iver 2 years by Michigan. Would the “good bargain hire” in bob’s mind

  2. Looking at his “winning” record at that wiki page, sweet geezus, please no.

And that pic? Looks like they’ll have to change the chainsaw to banjo music.

    • descending win total each year at Michigan looks a lot recent Rile E. I think his attractiveness to Michigan lay in the fact that he was a protégé of Lloyd Carr. His resume as an assistant is at par with Wilcox, for example; or even Frost. The fact that he coached at OSU before is also probably seen as a plus. Not being an advocate, just trying to deconstruct the proposition: why brady?

  3. Riley can pedal as fast as he can around Lincoln, he’s never going to beat Urban Meyer, but then I guess his claim to fame will be to win a couple of meaningless division championships. Meyer is drop kicking Whisky with a 3rd string QB.

  4. I happen to think Neuheisel would a poke in the eye hire just like Erickson was. Think of all the places in the conference where he is hated: Eugene, Seattle, Boulder, LA. He’d be a media star. he’s always telling Jack Arute he’d like to coach again.

  5. Mamma Machado adds, “Think of that interesting story line if Hoke is the guy…playing his old team at the Big House next season in game two. Sure he’d have plenty of motivation and could craft a good game plan for that one.”

Yeah, great mamma machado. She’s definitely breaking us in to the bad news.

  6. Wheels on the bus go thud thud thud, thud thud thud, thud thud thud, the wheels on the bus go zing, zing, zing, zing…all through the town!!! Everybody now!!!

  7. Fun moment at a fund raiser and auction in Eugene tonight.

Marcus Mariota/team signed football comes up for bid and two guys are outbidding each other up until final amount of $3,600. Crowd applauds loudly.

lol…The elderly winner stands up alone and yells “I hate your ducks and now I’ve got your football!”

The whole place is uneasy for about 15 minutes afterward.

The guy’s (in my men’s group) wife that lost walks over and has a conversation with the winner for a good long time. If I could have been a fly on the wall. Didn’t look light in nature.

A guy at my table gets all huffy and says “well WE’VE got your money”.

    Good times.

  8. Bottom line is everybody that wanted Riley out should put their money where their mouth is. If you want a decent coach raise a couple million bucks and you can get one. Otherwise don’t complain when the guy we hire wins the same amount or less, like I would predict. The university isn’t gonna help out, so the people who threatened to boycott football games unless Riley was gone need to backup their talk and open their wallets.

    • Truthfully. I feel like a hypocrite sometimes.

There’s a lot of stagnant money out there. A WHOLE LOT.

There are a lot of very, very wealthy people out there.

There are a lot of very, very wealthy people out there who could “open their pocket books” and solve a lot of OSU’s problems. Including that fella in Wisconsin…the OSU hot shot alum.

But then I think. This is crazy. What lasting value does it really have channeling money into football anyway? What real value?

I’m passionate about OSU sports (and other teams) but it’s really a substitute for things of lasting value.

If I had 10 Mil. I’d be very tempted to give a big chunk to OSU athletics.

—–>I’ll say $500,000 to fund a scholarship so Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis could have a steady flow of tickets to Beaver Athletics for years to come.

But, ultimately I’d have to do a small part to help alleviate those around the world who suffer so terribly with more of that money.

What would you do with 10 Mil.?

    • Jack has gone moron….or ducky

The coach isnt hired from donations. Getting a good coach at this point is not a matter of money, its a matter of the AD using its noggin and …. getting a good one. It did the process badly back when hiring CR and LW….then got it better in getting Rueck and Tinkle. One hopes the better trend continues….

  9. It appears Mikey is back in Corvallis as of this afternoon. Plane arrived from Lincoln. If anyone wants to stop by the VFC and wish him well, go for it!

      • Yeah I found the full quote.

“You bring something from every place you go to in your life. I got a lot more from Oregon State than they got from me. It was a great place. I appreciate the opportunity they gave to me.”

        • It still sounds bad. What did he do, loot the treasury? Deliberately post losing seasons while stealing all the staplers? Mike Riley should stop making any public statements. Hire an 8 yr old to speak for him…

          • …and now we know why the athletic department never has any money, and why Riley was okay with being the lowest-paid coach in the conference (officially) ;)

          • Football, way to stay on topic. I know what type of character you have by your name. Your no beav fan with a handle like that. Alcoholism is a disease that shouldn’t be poked fun at. Stay classy buddy

          • Football coaches not mediocre —

Bloss, Herbold, Steckle, Norcross, Metzger, Stewart, Schissler, Stiner, Prothro … Andros would be in there but for his last several seasons, which sucked.

          • Alcoholism is not a disease, its an affliction. A physiological condition. And if you cant stand poking fun at almost anything, better get your ass off this blog….

          • Thanks for proving my point. Riley has more wins than all of those coaches. In a much more competitive area. But I get it, much too many dogmatic opinions on the guy. I’m just stating a fact – he has more wins than anybody else. Everybody else on here is stating their opinion, which you are entitled to. If it was easy somebody would have won football games at Oregon State between 1970 and 1997. Fact is it didn’t happen til Riley got the ball rolling. I know what it’s like to go through years of losing, now many of you that continue to be beaver fans will too. Hope I’m wrong here.

          • Yer an idiot…. total wins has nothing to do with it. And Erickson got the winning season ball rolling again after the 28 yrs. You are a moronic Pollyanna, I get it. So give it a rest.

Riley in recent years has gone loser. To want him to continue is nonsense. And if the incoming coach posts some losing seasons, hey, its what Riley is doing. So we wont be worse off……AND there is every chance it gets better. This aint rocket science … try to follow along.

          • pretty easy to get that many wins when you’re given FOURTEEN FUCKING YEARS! Twice as many as anyone else in a LONG FUCKING TIME.

            93/14 = 6.64

That’s right. Mediocre Mike was just that. Did he give us some good years? Yes. But the negative outweigh the positive. In this day and age, win some games or step aside. It’s the nature of college football coaches. It’s such a simple idea that I think even someone like you can understand. If you want to gargle MR’s sack, go root for Nebraska. We here have had enough of him. Good riddance. You won’t be missed.

          • Dood!

Are you pulling the 28 year crap? I still have a piece of astro-turf I yanked off the field in 1974 when we fans were asked to come help take up the field after the last home game. I remember what it was like before the west side went up. I remember touring the west side while it was being constructed and thinking it was nice… comparatively.

I remember one coach finally breaking the 28 year slump, not with some rolling ball, but with a group who got ditched within a couple weeks of signing day. Can’t blame the ditch digger, but I also can’t rehire someone who does that kind of thing. You gotta have standards in business, or people will just walk all over you. And Riley and his cult of personality are showing their true colors right about now. They don’t care about my alma mater. They care about their little cult.

Well… the real foundation that was set was done by DE. He got Truax and Phase One done through his own efforts. And while he was here he got the AD to commit to a timeline for Phases Two and Three. Never mind that Riley strolled into that situation and our AD coincidentally forgot to honor that pledge… and then excuse after excuse ensued.

I’ve listened to Riley for years. I thought five years ago that he finally reached the hump and just might get over it with the loss of a few assistants. But he chose to insulate them and make excuses instead. That’s a darn nice thing to do, but it is such a losing thing to do in any business. But I should have known five years ago that he was making the same excuses then he was making last year and this.

That he ditches OSU is no surprise. It’s what he did and was going to do to us again. There was a piece before the CW about Jimmy coming to practice and Riley talking about how he wanted to be that way, coming to practices when he was retired. That was instantly flagged as complete bullshit. Jimmy is OSU and Corvallis through and through. Riley got Shawn Eichorst to introduce him as someone whose “adopted hometown” was Corvallis.

But enough about Riley. We shouldn’t care anymore. He went out for smokes and isn’t coming back. He doesn’t leave any lasting legacy here, and this program is left in quite a sizable hole for the next coach to climb out of. Riley may have more wins than any other OSU coach ever. But he also coached in the best of circumstances for OSU ever. He coached when a second place team in the conference could go to a bowl game. He coached when there were 12 (or 13) games in a season, with three patsies on the schedule… well… patsies for anyone else but Riley.

I don’t understand your little cult. I don’t get it. Mike Riley’s last five years mirrored Craig Robinson’s. But everyone wants to anoint him a saint… for what?

And don’t start chiming in about recruiting disadvantages. There is ONE hard and fast rule about recruiting. A kid doesn’t look at destination, facilities, weather, curriculum or money. He chooses a school to play for a coach. If Riley had trouble recruiting, that’s because he either took no for an answer or nobody he thought was better wanted to come play for him. End of story.

          • I really hold all those names sacred, you know – back when they didn’t allow black players to play. If we go back to those days, yeah maybe we could recruit to Corvallis – you ignorant prick.

          • Hey, dickhead…. there is no problem recruiting to Corvallis. If you work at it. Witness the winning programs of the past, football, basketball, baseball… and the current winning baseball program. And … even the early Riley years. So all I can say is, THANK GOD RILEY IS GONE!

          • more poisoning of the well, slash/burn. guys like this faux Jack aren’t OSU fans, they’re Riley fans. You can start rooting for Nebraska now.

          • “Alcoholism is a disease that shouldn’t be poked fun at. Stay classy buddy”

I’ll drink to that. Mike is that you? Are you buying?????

          • You’re….as in “You are no beav fan”….log in and you can edit your comments. Also, I wouldn’t worry about Whiskey’s name…..let’s figure out why you are using “Jack” as your name which belongs to a long term poster who offers excellent analysis on Beaver basketball and their upcoming opponents (in contrast to the useless pablum you are spewing forth).

        • Prothro, Erickson, Casey, Miller, Valenti, Gill, Hager, Stewart (in two sports), Bell, Wagner, Thomas, Chappell… there are a couple others I can’t think of off the top of my head… Zalesky.

  10. Hire Scott Frost! Oregon State would have an identity and a gritty leader to rally behind. Think we should call him Mr. Freeze and start causing some serious havoc in the Pac-12.

    • Riley’s going to take ALL of his own staff excluding Garrett? Man, it sounds like he even sold Eichorst on “the offense was the problem” last season excuse for OSU. Did anyone at NU watch any OSU game film for the last two years? In a perfect world Banker, Cavanaugh and Read would be scrambling to find FCS assistant jobs right now after BDC had canned Riley. I hope Nebraska enjoys Callahan 2.

    • that may or may not happen, but Frost not joining Riley in Nebraska means (1) the guy is smart (why buy into that mess) and (2) it’s Riley’s first “fail” with Nebby fans; first of many I predict.

  11. Totally agree on Hoke. No re-treads, it worked for Arizona, but that seems about it.

Maybe hire Frost and have him run his triple option from his NU days. Watching G Tech last night, the offense was entertaining, and a novelty in this day and age. If they could play a lick of D they would have beaten the 2nd most talented team in the country.

The triple option seems to work pretty well even if you don’t have a ton of speed and athletes (thus the military schools run it). And as the media has constantly informed us, Corvallis is only fit for trolls and lepers with a mild case of ebola, no one else would think to set foot in it. Could be a good fit at OSU, and something different for the Pac to deal with.

    • Regarding Hoke..can I get “un PC” for a minute?……I don’t like fat, sloppy head coaches…..I’m no svelte, fitness buff myself, but I like in shape major college head coaches….Fulmer, Dubois, Mangino, Weiss ….they didn’t look good. I don’t care about assistants, hit the buffet at will.

Wells, Mendenhall and Frost look the part. I think appearances count for something at that level.

      • Never undrerstood how these guys that ask for physical fitness, and now have training tables with healthy food, look so damn unhealthy. I know they work a lot of hours, but c’mon, if you have a training table, AND a healthy salary, you can afford to eat healthy. And your in an exercise environment.

  12. I was listening to a national college sports station…surprisingly more than one NU fan called in to say that Scott Frost has reputation as an arrogant ass in Lincoln….maybe it’s just frustration that he hasn’t come back and that he’s a Duck? If Riley had taken Frost as his OC, I could see a plan from NU.

It’s a nice turn of events for BDC. I might forgive him a little for the Riley contract if he makes a great hire. .BDC has come through lately, I hope he can do it again.

Also, I think (and I hate saying this), BDC should be given some kudos if he did indeed confront Riley with his coaching shortcomings and that speculated candidness set this whole chain of events into motion.

    • Sorry, even though DeCareless is on a bit of a roll with the hires of Rueck and Tinks he’ll never get kudos from yours truly. His contracts have put us behind the 8 ball, his lack of front office skills (sales/marketing) and even if he did have the “talk” it came waaaay too late. He should’ve been let go a long time ago.

      • If he saved the program 7 more years of Riley or a 12 million buy out with a little tough love for a coach who wasn’t really such a nice guy in the end and apparently has some “thin skin” then I say “better late than never”

BDC is going to be gone sooner than later and if it comes to light that it was Ed Ray who did the deed then I agree with you. Almost every Beaver sports program is on a positive trend except football, someone deserves a little credit, right? BDC has a huge decision with the new hire, we will see how he handles it.

  13. I’m not sold on Frost. He *might* be good, but what exactly has he proven?

The quacks could make that BDC plate of spaghetti OC there and still kick everyone’s butt with Mariota and their athletes.

    • if the choice came down to Frost, Wilcox, or Jonathan (not much talk about him lately; like since Friday), I’d take Wilcox. He’ll never get the job at UO because their “identity” is an offensive minded succession plan. Ask Alioti. Thus, Wilcox could be a reversal of the Rich Brooks scenario

  14. What are the Vegas odds on Langsdorf becoming the offensive coordinator at Nebraska after the Giants season is over? Also, does anybody know a good bookie? I’m putting my retirememt on that.

  15. Tons of Tedford buzz lately. Theory on blitz that name was leaked to gauge reaction, like a trial balloon (or he has a great agent like Riley)

    • I slept on it and I would be ok with Tedford. He’s an upgrade over Riley in every aspect minus the fact that Riley somehow found a way to beat him regularly.

I think Tedfor would be the safe hire to get us back to Pre regression riles. 9-10 wins as the ceiling occasional pac 12 champ contender

      • I agree. If OSU goes retread, which I think they will, Tedford is my choice. I have family in the Bay Area and they said that he didn’t get the support from the Cal administration for football. He also fought to get improved facilities, turned around a bad program (Cal hadn’t had a winning season since 1993), and developed strong QBs (Aaron Rodgers). He’s the last coach in the conference to beat Oregon 3 straight seasons and also did two things Riley never did here: win a conference title and get 2 10 win seasons.

Yeah the graduation rate sucked at Cal because he had early defectors to the NFL that didn’t come back to finish their degrees. OSU already is very successful at getting their players to graduate and have good support staff directing that part of the program. Tedford had to fight to get someone on board for that, but he didn’t shut his eyes to it. Even duck fans say he’d do well here.

If they hire Brady Hoke, I will be out, but would stick around for Tedford.

  16. After some thought I think I have a theory on what started the whole Mike Riley move.

    1. December 2013 – BDC and/or Ed Ray confront Riley. They tell him Langs has to go.
    2. Riley protests but eventually concedes. Views it as pure politics. Gets Langs a gig with the NY Giants. Lands Garrett.
    3. Beaver O struggles in 2014. Riley believes Garrett was a step back (maybe a significant one). In his mind, he betrays a good friend AND his performance suffers. Becomes bitter over the course of the season.
    4. December 2014- BDC and/or Ed Ray confront Riley. They tell him Banker has to go.
    5. Riley: I’m out. Not doing this again.

BeavBlazer beat me to the punchline a few posts up, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see Danny L to Nebraska as OC. As also stated, he’ll probably be looking for work along with the rest of the Giants staff.

One X-factor that might help explain Riley’s reluctance to change coordinators: what sort of budget does he have to find new guys? If he’s being limited to 200K-250K or so (Garrett’s salary I believe?) there’s no way he can make a competitive PAC-12 hire. You can take a flier on someone obviously, but there’s downside there compared to the known quantity in “your guy.”

  17. If I am Frost I would be holding out for a big time offer, like 3 mil plus.

If we are going retread I am still on the Schiano bandwagon. Though it sounds like Michigan may be interested in him.

    • I think Oregon State could offer Frost a 1.75 to 2 million deal at the high end to show it is serious about competing in the Pac-12. For a first year head coach that is pretty generous. Most likely it would have a small escalator and different incentive packages.

Perhaps something like a 1.7 million base salary to start on a 6 year deal. Each year the base goes up 400K.

      Year 1. 1.7 million
      Year 2. 1.74 million
      Year 3. 1.78 million
      Year 4. 1.82 million
      Year 5. 1.86 million
      Year 6. 1.9 million

Also 9+ wins earns a 400K bonus and winning the Civil War a 300K bonus. Any year Frost wins the Civil War he would be guaranteed 2+ million. The 400K bonus for 9+ wins is halved to 200K should we get 8 wins. That’s it. Simple with rewards for success.

Max payout in final year would be 2.6 million with 9+ wins and a win over the Ducks. He also could get 10% of the gate for incentive to pack the house. That is a competitive package and I think it could get Frost onboard.

  18. Coaching search name I’m gonna throw out there….anybody know much about Rod Carey at Northern Illinois? Guy truly is is the leader of the “done more with less talent” coach this year.

Seems like that’s the type of guy we’d need to go after in a league where OSU consistently has recruiting classes ranking near the bottom of the conference ( i know that is partially riley’s fault, but also partially circumstances of the program)

    • Two things:

      1. We’ve done the NIU thing already.
      2. Let’s see how well Carey does as Doeren’s players and preachings become smaller in the rear view mirror.

I still vote yes for PJ Fleck.

      • If it’s any consolation, Fleck did play at NIU and was an assistant there… and would have won the MAC if his EMU team (that went 1-11 last year) could have held a second half lead against his alma mater.

  19. Some stats I built. Shows average Wins per recruiting star (4 year class average 2011-2014) I’m using the 2014 overall win total instead of conference win total, which may skew things a little. Here are the top 20 results.

school name 4 year avg wins wins per star
    Northern Illinois 2.19 11 5.02
    Marshall 2.56 12 4.68

    Baylor 2.97 11 3.71
    Oregon 3.34 12 3.59
    Florida State 3.63 13 3.58

  20. TO: Bobby De

We the following Corvallis small business owners urge the immediate hiring of Brady Hoke as the new head football coach.

    McDonalds
    Campus Sub Shop
    Burger KIng
    Papa John’s
    Dominos
    Ron’s Big and Tall Shop

If that’s not possible please consider; Ralph Fridgen or that blimp Mangino. Skinny little anorexic Riley was bad for business.

As an incentive we would underwrite a moving van to bring Mr. Hoke to Corvallis.

PS: The moving van is for Mr. Hoke exclusively. His family and furniture would be his responsibility. We just want to be clear.

    • I don’t ever recall Corvallis having a big and tall shop. And anymore you can just go to a tailor and order your Chinese suit online.

And there is no campus sub shop in Corvallis… unless you count Togo’s. And Togo’s is a far cry from what it once was. You would more likely find Hoke down on fifth at University Hero.

      • There is a Campus Sub Shop here, on Alder. I didn’t eat there though. The place smells like pee and looks like it could use a good deep clean.

      • I used to work at the old Togo’s. I miss the old Togo, but understand how the company likes to make every store conform to their model. used to be that the corvallis shop was a unique model that didnt really follow the franchise rules. No other togos had a grill or served beer. I’ve workwd at one of the other togos shops. Nothing like the old corvallis one

  21. I’ve been lurking trying to catch up from being out of town since Riley peaced out. So thank you for all your comments and info. starting with you, angry.

My question is this: what is the home run hire? Is there one out of the names being tossed around?

    • I’m not sure there’s an obvious hr hire.

Guys I like are Mendenhall (low risk/moderate-high reward), Matt Wells (high risk/high reward), Frost (high risk/high reward), Harsin (moderate risk/high reward). In theory I like Wells the best, but then when I imagine him coaching against the guys in this conference with experience he might get his ass handed to him.

We’re hearing a lot of retreads pop up lately, which makes me think we’ll get either Hoke or Tedford…both would be more refreshing than Riley, which is not me advocating them but just speaks to how stale Riley got.

      • Tedford would be a good safe hire. Without the academic restrictions Cal has I imagine he could recruit his ass off to Corvallis. by selling our NFL talent now in the league along with his own guys.. Suddenly you’re able to pitch Desean Jackson Aaron Rodgers Brandin Cooks and Markus Wheaton Cam Jordan ..Stephen Paea etc.. all at the same time.

He runs an uptempo version of the pro-style yet still likes to get players in space…which I think is still where we should be in order to recruit differently and present preparation challenges for the rest of the conference..

Would be a solid hire as always ESPECIALLY with the right assistants…

      • I think there is real value in being perceived by our own fanbase and around the country as fresh and on the rise after going through what turned into a number of stale years under Riley. We were that dinosaur program and don’t want to go there again. That’s why I think Frost, Wells or Wilcox are Oregon State’s best direction. You get that initial nice buzz for a couple years and they and the program probably would be constructively on the rise. Then in everyone’s minds we continue to move forward with a strong chance of more to look forward to as the middle years of the contract approach. Think it is wise to strike a new path and embrace it in our culture.

You want to be that program that looks like it has a bright future and is forming new trends. Go with a retread and maybe 40-50% still aren’t feeling it and it too easily seems like it can even be a slow decline from there. Better to be ahead of the curve by a year and well positioned as current and relevant for several years to come within a quick moving conference. The timing with Riley and lucking out how we did is a rare and fortunate golden opportunity to start fresh on the earlier and rising end of the program lifecycle and build into something other programs are envious of.

        • I like your thinking. I wish Bob D., Ed R. and hopefully Mark M. are into FRESH instead of mothballs. Hey, I’m not sold on either Rick N. or Jeff T. but I think especially Rick could bring some pizzazz on style to our system and marketing and probably help bring some frickin funding our way too.

          • Actually I got the impression Rile E. Coyote did minimal in terms of fund raising. At least if you compare to say…oh I don’t know…

            Pat Caaaaaseeeeeyyyyy!!!!

      • I can’t see Harsin jumping from his alma mater after one year and he got them to the Fiesta Bowl. Absolutely, I’d take him though. Just think it’s a long shot. Not sure what his buyout is either. If there is truth to the 650K buyout for Wells, I think he is a very realistic option and BDC should be pursuing him.

    • I emailed Ed Ray, BDC and Massari saying I thought Frost would be a home run hire. Literally used that term because it matched my beliefs. I said I liked Wells as a close alternative option and a ‘possible triple.’ I am looking at things like the upside potential in the full dynamic of the Oregon State football program. I don’t think the retread route is what is best or healthiest for OSU after the fanbase going through extensive time with Riley. I think it is best if the program and its fans were all united in looking forward. Think we deserve and need that full rebirth.

  22. I’d like to get New-High-Sell. He doesn’t need anymore money. He knows our program. He’s hilarious. Let’s get a brash SOB who loves to stick the dagger in yer back out in front of our program for once.

  23. Who do we have affirmative interest from so far? Tedford and Baldwin?

As far as retreads go, I supposed Tedford would be fine with me.

Baldwin would be so risky, I’m not sure you can make that decision unless he blows them away in interviews.

Tedford seems almost like a Ben Howland type hire so I actually think he might be one of the front runners for BDC. Veteran that has shown he can get it done at our level.

Yeah, his resume isn’t equivalent to Howland, but football at Cal is not basketball at UCLA.

  24. Regarding Tedford, I made this post in 2011 questioning why Beaver fans would mock him: http://angrybeavs.com/athletics/4503

That being said, I don’t really want him, though he IS better than Riley.

What is hilarious is that back then a lot of the AB posters were saying Tedford stinks and Riley was better, using weird justifications to make that seem true. Now AB posters are saying Tedford might not be so bad. Funny.

    • No thank you to Tedford. He’d recruit better, I think, but as a coach he stinks. As an in-game coach there wouldn’t be much of a difference between him and Mike. Pass.

  25. I was never impressed with Tedford. He always had a roster full of talent but rarely fielded great teams.

Frost looks good on paper but I’m hesitant to hire a guy with no head coaching experience who is also presumably going to be the OC. That’s a lot to ask of a guy who has never done it.

I’d be ok with Baldwin or Deruyter or Wells as they have at least led a team to success.

Schiano is the home run hire.

  26. Another thing I really like about a Scott Frost hire is I feel there is an excellent chance we would get frequent reminders that we made a much more intelligent decision for a new era of Oregon State Football then Nebraska did. They haven’t even had Riley for a week and you are seeing many in their fanbase develop the symptoms we had before and recognize issues of concern. I sense already a fair amount of buyer’s remorse.

Frost feels like he would bring alot of things Oregon State needs to get its program churning and very interesting. I would like having the Nebraska connection of knowing we unloaded Riles at the right time and to top it off got the guy most of their fanbase truly wanted. I see that playing out as their Riley symptoms getting worse and our decision to hire Frost looking better and better as time moves on.

    • how’s this for a story line: OSU hires Frost, and he succeeds (in OSU terms) by winning 7-9 games for a few years; while at the same time Riley FAILS (in Nebraska terms) by winning 7-9 games a year, gets fired, and is replaced by Frost. Now truthfully, if you could snap your fingers and make that happen wouldn’t you take it?

        • I don’t know.

You know, the more I look into these guys the less confident I feel about any. I haven’t watched most of these coaches enough to say who is best. I’m basing opinion on biographies and youtube videos. I mean has anyone actually watched utah state? I haven’t. Wells looks good on paper and in that video going around. But that’s not how to hire a coach. Without interviewing these guys I really have no clue.

I just know we got 500k for riley, which is amazing. And anyone should be better, in theory.

          • I watch them and Wells has kept the momentum going from Andersen, but when you look at who they beat in the Mountain West, it’s cringe worthy for the most part. True, they are no longer losing to San Jose St and UNLV, but long term it’s a big leap in competition. People hype the close games against Auburn and Wisconsin, but that was Andersen. Wells took his team back to Tennesse with Keeton and it wasn’t close this year.

I’m not down on Wells at all, but it’s really a big unknown. Guys like Tedford actually know the drill.

          • I watched Utah State’s last 4 games. Liked Wells demeanor on the sideline and thought offense and defense on the whole was pretty good. Winning 9 games with a 4th string QB who would have equalled Mannion’s wins this year at Oregon St if not maybe gotten a 6th shows he puts trust in his players and they trust him. He’s the kind of hire we have the ability to make (this year) and be seen as a program on the rise for more than a few years to come. That is good in my book. I think you could build a nice program around him. Harsin at Boise handled Utah State pretty easily but that is a very tough environment and Harsin is a very good coach who also is plenty worthy of consideration except that he seems happy at Boise and is not yet prepared for a change.

I believe though that Oregon State would get a superior offense from Frost. I also have confidence that Frost would hire a good DC and be perhaps even a better leader than Wells. Wells brings DC Todd Orlando who is a good defensive mind and also thought of as being on the rise in the coaching ranks. If we got Frost or Wells I believe OSU’s program would be headed to a healthy place and I would be excited for the future of what was in store for Oregon State. With Frost I would raise that to very excited.

        • Bohl has been very successful as a head coach at the lower level. They recruited a bunch of player from MN that were borderline D1 prospects and did a very good job of player development. His teams play smart, power running ball. He was Frank Solich’s DC at Nebraska and got run out of town after the 2002 season to be replaced by none other than Bo Pelini. Skill set much better suited to HC. Should have been a logical candidate at Neb., but the fan base could not forget the unbelievable beat down by Colorado to end the 2001 season. If he get the Cowboys turned upwards in the next couple years he will end up with a big job in a power 5 conference.

  27. Are there any scientists here? Can we make Dennis Erickson 7 years younger? I want DE back home, but I don’t want him stroking out on the sideline.

    • I loved the intensity Erickson teams had. Dumb penalties sucked but never felt like his teams just went through the motions. Now he would be a disaster. If he was 15 years younger it would be a home run.

    • I liked what DE was able to do here. It was an inspired hire given where he and OSU were at the time. He definitely demonstrated what can be done here is a short period of time. The nice half of the stadium is the house that DE built.
However, I hated the unsportsmanlike penalties. Some of it was cheap. I also feared getting us into trouble with the NCAA.

    • Never was high on him. I think people thought he was better than he was because he swore and had the players do bear crawls. For a dude that talked a lot about technique his players sure didn’t have it. Only a couple of staffers I’d keep and he wasn’t on the list. Maybe his boy goes tries to walk on in Lincoln…

    • Never was too high on him. I think people thought he was better than he was because he cussed and had the players do bear crawls. For a dude that talked a lot about “technique” his players sure didn’t have it. Only a couple of staffers I’d keep and he wasn’t on the list. Maybe his boy tries to walk on in Lincoln…

  28. I hear from a source in Eugene that Frost is intrigued by the Colorado State job. He can win early and often there and unlike Corvallis, where the cupboard (on defense certainly) is bare, McElwain was a good recruiter and the team is well stocked.

    • Frost followed me on twitter first thing this morning. I viewed that as a good sign that he has some interest in Oregon State. I think he wants to take that step to head coach right now and I hope we are the program that capitalizes. If we give proper commitment and embrace striving for success in a bold new direction I think we have alot to offer. The Pac-12 is alot better place to be than the MWC. Frost will be able to find success against enough teams to keep getting better.

    • I think they are losing their QB and star RB, so a good time for their coach to jump ship.. Goph’s play them in the second game next year so there has been a lot of talk about them. I’m happy they lost their coach as they looked to be a much tougher opponent than when the series was scheduled.

  29. I like Frost. The game of football has really been revolutionized in terms of practice pace, scientific based training methods and an extra emphasis on nutrition. Chip Kelly has really been a real part of this revolution and established it as a culture at UofO. OSU needs to establish a forward thinking identity. This idea that OSU shouldn’t look to one of the best programs in the nation for ideas because they are our rivals is idiotic. If we bring in Frost we will probably have close to twice as many practice reps. That will mean less procedural penalties, more instinctive play and back ups that are more ready to contribute.

    • He has also played for two HOF coaches. Walsh and Osborne. Played D in the NFL and is a smart guy. Seems like a no brainer. Like it or not, ducks are a hot brand so why not take a risk and diminish them at the same time.

    • Angry–the most obvious choice is the debate we had for years…IS THIS THE TIME TO HIRE THE PIRATE?

Leach gets my vote for worst possible hire.

    • Tedford and it’s not close.

The king of getting less than more, he’s a total washed up has-been. He stayed at Cal years longer than he should have bc of credibility in initially building the program. He’s a total Riley clone except years further down the track.

Take Hoke over him in a heartbeat.

    • I would rather have Tedford than Hoke. Hoke would be the worst and I would search out the nearest bridge if Hoke is hired. If it’s Tedford, I might at least live through a season.

    • Hoke would not be a horrible hire. He’s a better coach to me than he showed in Michigan but I really stand him and wouldn’t want him to be the head coach cause he’s an awful person and only a decent coach.

  30. I always liked watching Schiano’s Rutgers teams on TV. He kind of reminded me of an east coast Kyle Whittingham. His teams played hard and look where he took Rutgers football, I would think he was a big factor in getting them to the Big 10. I would not mind seeing him in Corvallis at all.

    • That’s what I’ve been saying. All Schiano’s assistants are now the coaching staff at EMU under PJ Fleck… who was the recruiting coordinator and WR coach at Rutgers.

Why is nobody looking to the midwest at a coach who took one of the worst teams out there (historically and in real time) and in two years has built a winning culture and kick-started new facilities?

  31. I thought this was a good analysis of Riley to Nebraska….I love the line about “the media in Nebraska will be the happiest to have Riley”. I think the contrast with Pelini will play well for awhile, but Husker fans still think their program should compete for NC’s. Nice guy or not it is going to take a lot of wins to please them in the end.

    http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/nebraska-cornhuskers-oregon-state-beavers-mike-riley-feldman-120514

    • one of the bonuses from Riley leaving is that in an odd way it give us (me, at least) a second team to “follow.” I thought the most pertinent line was that the Big 10 West is a lot easier to navigate than the Pac North. In the abstract that may be true, but consider this: if we concede for the sake of argument that Riley circa 2011-2014 was the same coach as 2001-2009 (which I don’t believe is the case) every other school in the Pac made an upgrade in coaching since his hey-day in the middle of the last decade. Looking ahead, I don’t see him as likely to routinely outcoach Anderson, Kill, Ferentz and Fitzgerald.

      • He better be able to do that or his ass is gone in less than three years. However delusional it may be Husker Nation expects Riley to be able to compete with Meyer and Dantonio with their National Championship mentality.

  32. Posted this on OLive earlier. Just though I would share here. This is a great site. I think I am goin to boycott OLive as well. Had it with Goe. He is an arrogant hack writer.

FWIW I was at a high school game Saturday and over heard a conversation with a high level current OSU player. He said while some of the players were sad St. Riley was leaving it may actually be for the best as a large segment of players had given up and tuned out our St. Riley.

Seems change might have been needed.

And No the player wasn’t Coach Cav’s son. It will be hard to see all of those false starts and line mistakes leave to Nebraska.

    • I can’t find the exact quotes, but there were a couple of “odd” comments from Riley through out the season that implied this was not his most coachable group of players. As common, I’m sure it’s equal parts coaches and players who share in the responsibility.

      • the pollyannas are then gonna say, but but but how do explain the beavers beating ASU????

I think that game was more about what ASU didn’t do then what OSU did. If you recall ASU had rebounded from being doen 14-3 to leading 24-14 at halftime. I think by that point they figured the beavers were going to roll over and die

    • Ignoring all that religious nonsense, I don’t really have anything bad to say about that video nor the way he talks. I don’t mind that he’s young and a risk. He’s got some obvious upside.

      • Well there you have it.

Now Frost is my leader because of that “religious” nonsense you mentioned. After all, he’s right. It all falls apart in life if we’re leaning on something besides Jesus.

        Come on home Frost.

        • …and believe me there is not one iota of superiority in me saying that. I could start an AngryChristian.com site with my frustrations with God sometimes. In fact, my life is turd soup in many ways right now.

          • I don’t understand the intended meaning of this sentence. I’ve always been responsible and intend to be accountable for my actions. I’m not always successful.

          • I thought you said you gave yourself over to another “power,” or were proposing such an idiocy.

Responsibility does not allow for anyone to pretend some imaginary force controls them or anything affecting them in any way if responsibility is to be taken seriously. If anything, God can be a construct borne of 20/20 vision in which grace becomes a factor. But that’s still a human construct.

Hell… even the bible tells you you can’t know God.

So how is it that so many morons suddenly do so and feel better?

Oh… I know it has nothing to do with their preachers.

          • Jack,

Let me first say I have zero interest in getting any sense of pride of engaging in a chess match style “I can win more points than you” argument. Let me say that I humbly am interested in your points of view. It’s fine, really. Please know that. (I didn’t realize you had posted again.)

Why is it such idiocy to think someone greater than me (another power…God) created me. It makes complete sense. Surely someone as smart as you could consider that as an option.

God does not control us, to the contrary. He created us with free will. That was a blessing and a curse. I get pissed at God by the way, I mentioned that. He’s big enough to handle that.

I’m sorry if I’m missing your point about responsibility/grace but it was God’s idea to implement grace when man chose to depart from God’s original communion with man and go his own way. That’s man’s tendency (rebellion) and it sure shows in society today (greed, lust, anger, power, selfishness)

The Bible tells us we CAN know God, it also tells us we could never expect to understand all of God, that’s what makes us human. There is so much mystery to God it makes my head spin. Consider the universe itself, or a big one Christians and non-Christians alike struggle with…why innocent people suffer.

God/Jesus said we’d be called “morons” for following Him…you’re actually fulfilling prophecy in a way. You’re partly right and partly wrong about “feeling better” about following Christ. I cannot tell what a huge misconception it is that The Church gets tagged with being “happy people”. What a crock of shit. We are a bunch of broken people who need a Savior because we are fallen, just look at the world around you. We realize we didn’t get here on our own and we fall short on our own because inherently our corrupt nature is not OK with God’s eternal nature but Jesus paid a huge cost to get us there. I know that sounds “mythical” to you. But good and holy crap child birth alone is a frickin’ miracle in itself. I could go on and on and on about miracles. It’s all the revelation of God himself before our eyes.

My dad was a preacher, it’s in SPITE of him that I hang on to this truth. You’re correct, there are a lot of hypocritical shits in the church including egotistical pastors.

          • I believe in a creating force, and if someone wants to call that “God” so be it. I don’t think people who believe in God are idiots. Science gets too much credit. Much science right now is correlation instead of causation. In practice, it is hard to prove anything 100% definitive scientifically. Personally I feel if there’s a God it’s more likely it’s a force than something with a conscience or any human traits, or it’s possibly something we can’t even fathom with our limited mental power. For this reason, I don’t even think about it anymore, just live life and once in a while acknowledge something magical is going on. I went to Catholic school for 9 years but rejected that religion long ago. It’s just as bad as science.

          • A “creative force” is a great way to say it. Great way to put it. We were created in God’s image too. That’s who God is. But, like Jack was on the path with, we can’t know all of God because His ways are unfathomable. I mean how did Scarlett Johansson just come into being…that’s an eye opener that I just can’t wrap my head around.

          • There’s no “reply” available on your “Scarlett” BJ comment so I’m leaving it here. I can tell by your answer that you’re probably sick of Bible bashers or your Catholic school instructors shoving the sin topic down your throat. Maybe not, maybe so. I get it. Fact is every honest guy would like the Scarlett act but hopefully every well rounded guy would also like a more well rounded relationship in addition. And let’s face it, lust in itself leads down a lousy path, I know that myself and my Christian friends who are in support groups and/or who have lost jobs and nearly lost marriages because of porno will attest to that in less than one nano second.

The fact that you go directly to the big issue “going to Hell” is natural and unsettling for us all. Sure, it’s a topic Jesus spoke of often but it was saying our spiritual uncleanness (This is not woo woo stuff really. It might seem that way.) separates us from God…Hell being separation from God. Jesus was so ballsy but loving. One of the best descriptions you’re probably already familiar with is when the Pharisees are harassing the prostitute and Jesus defends (love that because it’s the entire message of salvation in that moment) her saying essentially “hey you idiots if you’re without sin go ahead and pummel her with stones” and they walk away asses busted. And these aren’t just stories. Non-believing historians back a lot of the history up as well. Jewish historian Josephus, Roman historian Tacitus as well. I mean, I wasn’t there for Abe Lincoln but I know he was there.

          • That didn’t come out right. You can be a well-adjusted, intelligent, caring, responsible member of society, absolutely (I chuckle with you) ;)

…without believing Jesus is the Son of God and responsible for creating you.

I differ on the myth part.

          • Then you didn’t:

            1. grow up going to Catholic schools
            2. take courses from Professor Borg

Here’s a light read on one of the first schisms.
            http://douglaslockhart.com/pdf/THE%20NAZORAEAN%20SECT.pdf

And if you knew the different sects and how each of them prognosticated a savior and all the “miracles” he would perform… many years before his birth… you would know that the virgin birth, the walking on water, the division of bread and fish, the turning of water into wine and the resurrection were all what the Nazarene sect had the myth set many years before Jesus was born.

And don’t let anyone tell you Yeshua wasn’t a real person. He was.

He just didn’t do any of the magical mystery stuff his sect posthumously applied to him through word of mouth for about a century after his death until that varying story became static through print.

If you don’t believe in the virgin birth, you can’t possibly believe in the resurrection.

            Yes… myth.

That doesn’t mean his teachings aren’t good. That just means his teachings are those of his sect. And except for the fact the core of his message had been taught for a millennium or more in several other religions… and that most of those who subscribe to his legend do so more to the legend than the message… and that I don’t think the Nazarene’s talked about sha’ol… but I’ll have to look that up…Yeshua was just a hippie who would be one of the Occupy leaders nowadays.

          • In short, Yeshua did live. Yeshua was just a hippie born into a certain commune. Yeshua died. Yeshua was just a man who lied and died and wasn’t afraid to speak truth to power.

            Look where that got him.

          • Dear Jack,

Man, I just shake my head, truly, I’ve just heard horrific things, in the past, and recently about abuses, physically and emotionally because of Catholic upbringings. Not that it happens in all cases. I have to say…I wouldn’t blame you a bit for saying FUCK RIGHT OFF.

Yes, I know of Prof. Borg. I feel bad because there are several cases of men who try and try to prove Christ as a fraud. It saddens me. C.S. Lewis was an atheist for a while. Josh McDowell wrote a book called Evidence That Demand a Verdict. You might give it a try…

If you would like, here’s his Wiki…

pretty rough upbringing if you read his first couple paragraphs…

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_McDowell

I’m not following real close on the sect references as I come from an evangelical background. For sure I believe in Yeshua (Jesus) as real! Birth and death and resurrection. And, that there were many prophetic references hundreds of years before his birth about the Savior (Jesus/Yeshua), if that’s what you mean. I’m award that even Muhammad made reference to Jesus in the Kuran but I believe Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life.”

          • What’s the downside to believing in God? Nothing. I don’t see any gain there. This was basically Pascal’s Wager. Much more downside to not believing. Risk management!

          • As long as you don’t mind giving up happiness, or forcing others to give up their happiness then I guess there’s nothing wrong with believing any unprovable myth. Most atheists start having a problem when those beliefs infringe on others.
Besides, Pascal’s wager works in reverse too… if “God” exists then he probably doesn’t mind that someone is skeptical about his existence based on him never showing one shred of verifiable evidence.
Plus, you can’t be forced to believe in anything. Sure you can be forced or even voluntarily go through the motions of what a person who believes in a god does but anyone who thinks critically would come to the conclusion that it’s all unnecessary.

    • He sounds like a guy who can relate to all kinds of men and be able to connect on faith as well as those who are ‘all in with football’. I can see based on that 1 video, it’s how he says things, not exactly what he says. He speaks his mind, but thinks before he speaks. I can see why kids would want to play for him QB wise.

    • I thought he was very articulate and projects well. You knew what his points were and how much he cares about developing young men. It was night and day listening to compared to Riley’s vagueness and struggles to put together coherent sentences. Liked his soldier analogy and belief in hard work and preparation. You can tell he takes great care of his body and values sound nutrition for athletes to perform their best. I believe he would represent Oregon State very well and has the most obvious upside. I know I will start my season tickets back up without hesitation if he is hired.

    • All I know about Frost is that my 58 year old blackjack at Planet Hollywood back in August was all hot and bothered by him. Apparently, he was playing at her table a couple months previously. I asked how much he was betting a hand and she indicated $25. Thought maybe he might have been a bigger bettor.

  33. someone needs to send that pic of Banker with the dumbfounded look on his face after the USC hail mary to Nebraska fans to show them what they’re in for

  34. Kill has Gophers in New Years bowl in four years and inherited a total disaster. The right hire can turn this around pretty quick.

  35. “I heard a similar rumor as well, and am trying to confirm with a few people. My source said meeting with Pres. Ray to secure the money for a top tier coach. At this point it is all rumor and hearsay, but it does appear to have legs and could prove to be a bold move for the Beavs to compete in the conference with the big boys.”
Angie talking about a donor meeting so we can land a good coach
    Origanal post:”Rumor
Don’t mean to give false hope, and the info I have is 2nd hand. Has anyone heard about a donor meeting for our largest donors tomorrow? If so they are thinking of a bigger name then I would have ever thought was possible or anyone has mentioned as a possibility. DA had every reason to be excited in his tweet.”

    • This is true. They are trying to get Ray onboard with raising the salary ceiling considerably, not only for the head coach position, but for assistants. And a increase to the program budget overall.

        • Just generalities; that influential donors were pissed off about Riley, but they didn’t want to buy him out. My guess these guys finally had enough and demanded Banker gone. Those theories seem accurate.

          • And why would they want to continue funding that fool?

I can’t imagine anyone even remotely successful looking at the job MR was doing, his complacency, laid back attitude, and think to themselves, ‘Gee, ol’ Mike sure seems to really be into this. He sure is giving it his all. I should open my wallet and if we can’t get him a raise, see if we can’t get more cash flowing for Banks, too!’

          • Weirdly, I’ve heard it was more Read that caused the issue. Banker, for sure to a certain extent…but the point was made loudly and repeatedly about obvious deficiencies in Read’s recruiting and coaching. (At least Banker could lure in a kid from Hawaii or whatever, Read couldn’t recruit for shit. Say what you will about Banker, he could stuff the shit out of a pro-style offense like USC.) So these donors go to Bob and ask for changes and Riley won’t even admit that Read should be replaced…the donors say…well, fuck Riley, he’ll never change.

That’s what I’ve heard. And it started in 2006. Riley was a loss away from getting fired at that point, after the WSU game. Lots of excuses, lots of finger pointing. I think Bob was still in Riley’s corner at that time (hence the ‘lifetime contract that would come later) but Bob has come around since.

I’ve always said that Bob is not as bad as some here think.

          • So what’s the deal with Read that MR felt he couldn’t be replaced?

He shit canned Ungerer after telling him to his face that once he was in the inner circle he was ‘part of the family.’ That lasted, what, 2 years? Then ol’ Dave was unceremoniously dumped and the Ungerers were shunned by the remaining coaching staff for the remainder of the time they spent in Corvallis.

        • It’s more than 2 years. There was serious grumbling early in 2006, more after the loss to BYU in 2009. The last 2 years have been really bad though, just (from what I’ve heard) the additive nature of finally seeing Mike’s bullshit for what it is.

  36. What name is out there that would be above the current tier of available coaches? Are we talking “lure away” if the funds come through? Hard to imagine that happening.

    • Well, Bryan Harsin is one. I know I’ve seen his name on plenty of lists, but It’ll take much more than people think to get him here, but I believe his name is on the table. He makes 1.2 million now, I bet it takes over double that to even get him to answer the phone.

  37. It does make sense that donors have been holding back serious donations and waiting for the right moment to use their money wisely instead of donating to eliminate a coach, but to hire one instead. This is the opportune moment to hire someone who is interested, but wants the donors behind them which Riley clearly had for awhile, but at some point, the donations either slowed or stalled and Riley kept asking for more help $$ wise but wasn’t getting it…therefore, he decided to take a job that had constant backing by donors no matter what.

  38. regrettably, I think we’re in a situation where the best we can hope for is to lure away a mid-major guy like Wells or a top coordinator like Wilcox. otherwise the recourse is tempt fate with a lower division guy like Baldwin or a re-tread.

  39. Hmm, what are some examples of “big name” people we’d be bringing in with more financial support? Or would Scott Frost need some big money?

    • Hopefully its putting together a strong enough offer to get and keep Frost. What we’ve been doing isn’t enough. I know many Oregon State fans who have been holding back that would be thrilled with a Frost hire.

  40. Anybody on the NFL side that we aren’t considering and it would take more than 1.5 to get? I have bupkis for any names. I do know that the wating for a new HC is killing me.

At least I can relate to my younger son and Christmas right now.

  41. Wulff out as OC as South Floriduh

According to 247Sports, offensive coordinator Paul Wulff, defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and defensive backs / assistant head coach Ron Cooper will not return next season.

  42. how sad is it that folks are talking about Beavers’ football more now than during the season. I know as of right now it is mostly just talk but it is fun just to read all of it

    • because most folks were annoyed with hearing “let it play out” when we’ve been watching it play out for years to the same results. It’s the anticipation. Are we going to get someone that can get us to the next level.

      • oh, I agree I’m getting excited like everyone else; I just find it sad that it got that bad. At first I was upset that he left but after I letting it sit in I figure it was for the best. I also think that Riley will burn at NU

  43. One angle from the rumored meeting might be a situation where they have their guy (really feels like Frost) but maybe that guy is interested but has some conditions (budget, stadium expansion, branding, etc..)and this meeting tomorrow is about how OSU will meet those conditions.
Donors being excited enough to have this meeting is already a good sign.

  44. Well, I think you can lump Del Rio, Jeff Fisher, and really any NFL personnel that has a household name into the NFW category.

We’re more likely to succeed with a hungrier lower division coach with something to prove and wants to stay and build, than say a career retread looking to cash a few checks before springboarding the job and bailing at the first opportunity.

  45. If the rumors are true about getting more money committed…..are you doing it because you already have a strong lead or to attract strong leads?

  46. maybe we can get that DB to flip back when we get our new coach. agree with MC above. This feels a lot like Christmas when I was a kid wondering what I was going to get for a present

  47. I’m going with Kirby Smart.

    a. no head coaching experience
    b. the guy who heard this seemed shocked. due to the distance, an alabama assistant would be surprising, as would mutual interest
    c. it would make a splash to get the alabama dc. you can see donors ponying up to get someone from a storied program like that.

    my pick after some deduction.

  48. I wouldn’t consider Kirby Smart absurd….I would consider it smart if they could get him. McElwain went to Colorado St and it didn’t cost 2.5 million or so.

To me absurd would indicate a highly recognizable name who you would never connect to OSU or think he would have any interest in doing this at this point in his career.

  49. It’s Danny Langsdork.

    NFL….check
    No HC experience ….check
    Splashy…..He coached Eli Manning…..
    Luck O the Beav’s…..check

  50. Where is Pettibonehead? You chickenshit. Step up to the plate and put your name in the hat. It has been many years you have sat on the sidelines, and surely you must be much more “eddicated” in all aspects of the game. Come back and vindicate your sad ass. Bring the Beavers to uncharted glory. Now is your chance.

  51. Machado and her cronies are only sending out click bait. No one should be falling for it. She has nothing. No insider sources, she’s only regurgitating media speculation.

footballscoop.com and coachingsearch.com are reputable sites for coaching moves that won’t publish click bait. Other coaches watch this site to see where the openings are.

So far no media outlet has been able to confirm any rumors. Since there has been so much silence, I am kind of expecting the hire to be out of left field. Of all the candidates that have been mentioned, I don’t see any as a home run hire. Most seem to be decent but nothing that would immediately change how others see OSU.

It’s easier listing the people I would say are bad hires so here goes,
Matt Wells – A do more with less guy. Don’t want to see another Mike Riley type hire.
Baldwin – It would take him a bit to make the transition and other programs will pass him by while he does.
Neuheisal – Tends to leave programs in ruins.
Hoke, Long – No need to bring back guys who were here when OSU stunk.
Frost – Oregon is a machine, not sure how he’d fare outside it.
Del Rio – the only reason this would be a bad hire is because of his son.

These could be less bad hires depending on who they hire on their staff. I expect some urgency soon. BDC needs to get this person hired in the next week so they can get recruiting back and up again.

    • I used to be a season ticket holder. A guy like this getting hired would instantly bring me back on board as a season ticket holder.
It’s all entertainment spending to me. A retread pac 12 coach that I’ve seen fail before is a script I’ve already seen play out. (Hoke, Tedford, Neuheisal) Somebody who can bring a fresh take on things into Corvallis is what I want to see. I want to be excited to show up at Reser to see how things unfold, rather than dread the drive down there because I already know how the game will look before I get there. I want somebody who is hungry, not somebody who is looking for a job. Frost and Wells are 2 guys I could get behind. A jaded NFL failure is not somebody I want coming in. I want somebody who aspires to be an NFL coach some day, not somebody who is retreating back to college ball.
