NOBODY Wants Hoke (Even the Optimists over at Blitz)

319

Per Mamma Machado: From sources: Brady Hoke has been contacted about the OSU job, while Justin Wilcox and Matt Wells have not.

Just checked in and they said Michigan is laughing at us like we’re laughing at Nebraska. All seem disappointed. These are the same guys who loved Riley just because he was their coach (and hated him the second he left), so if nothing they’re loyal to their active coach. Yet, they do not want anything to do with Hoke.

Personally, I would take Tedford over Hoke. That is how badly I do not want Hoke.

Mamma Machado gave clues yesterday that it could be Hoke. She said it would be an interesting story line if he coached for the Beavs at Michigan next year, someone mentioned he’s invested in apartment complexes in Corvallis, is friends with Hoke from their days at Michigan in the mid 90s, and the real kicker is that Michigan is still paying a big part of his salary. I bet Bob D views this as a value hire and figures if things go wrong, who cares, Michigan is on the hook. That is a small-minded mentality and no way to run an AD. My fear is he will hire him out of nepotism (he knows him) and because he is cheap. This makes no sense with the rumor from last night, unless that rumor was for the VFC, which there’s an announcement for on Wednesday. So these could be unrelated things, and we could wind up with Hoke. Talk about a disaster…many at Blitz say they’d rather have Riley than Hoke.

If this goes down it will be an amazing feat for BDC to hire the one candidate everyone seems to agree they don’t want. There will be zero excitement over this guy. Rumors are he’s a jerk who mistreated his QB last year, too, so his bad resume isn’t the only problem.

  1. Nebraska made a hire for non-football reasons (“Riley is a nice guy and not Pelini”) and it will end poorly for football reasons.

Your rationale for his behavior are reasonable, but I truly hope BDC does not make the same mistake, hire for convenience/budget, suffer on the field.

We can look to the Robinson decision, as latent as it was, and subsequent Tinkle hire as an example that BDC may do better than Hoke.

C’mon BDC, don’t screw this up. This is a major opportunity to energize the program and fanbase and move forward. Actually, its a great way for BDC to go out on a positive note. Imagine if he soon leaves OSU having put Rueck, Tinkle, and Wells or better in place at OSU.

    • “Nebraska made a hire for non-football reasons (“Riley is a nice guy and not Pelini”) and it will end poorly for football reasons.”

That’s nuts. Nebraska hired Riley away from Oregon State because they say they’ve been studying him up close for ten straight years (and we can therefor only presume that their first run at him was not in November/December, 2014), and they are convinced that he’s the 2nd coming of Amos Alonzo Stagg, concealed only by being buried in Corvallis with a high school stadium and high school facilities. That’s what their AD says in so many words.

  2. It’s worse than when OSU fans were laughing at Nebraska for hiring Riley, because EVERYBODY is laughing at us at the prospect of hiring Hoke. Michigan fans, tOSU fans, OSU fans, Pac-12 fans. All laughing at this idea.

This is the post that started all of the Hoke rumors this morning, so hopefully this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’s gone viral, so hopefully OSU does something to squash it as damage control (hoping it’s incorrect of course)

    https://twitter.com/joshnewberg247/status/541976624472653824?s=03

  3. Well time for me to step away from all the speculation about the hire. It is stressing me out more than 3 minutes left on the clock and Riley team has the ball with 3 time-outs left.

  4. I was very curious about the “absurd” hire and more money pouring in from donors, but I’m thinking that was just “Blitz Bullshit”. I mean if you have a name then name them…..it’s just a message board. Is Mama Machado that tight with important people at the university that she would catch heat for putting a name out there?

    • She didn’t write that, a member showed up and wrote it and he was told not to name the name. He wasn’t being sensational about it and seemed legit.

      • I understood that she didn’t write it, but couldn’t the poster have named names and kept anonymity or did Mama tell him not to? Name names or stay home!

        • He said he couldn’t name them.

“Don’t mean to give false hope, and the info I have is 2nd hand. Has anyone heard about a donor meeting for our largest donors tomorrow? If so they are thinking of a bigger name then I would have ever thought was possible or anyone has mentioned as a possibility. DA had every reason to be excited in his tweet.”
          ————
Mamma comes in: “I heard a similar rumor as well, and am trying to confirm with a few people. My source said meeting with Pres. Ray to secure the money for a top tier coach. At this point it is all rumor and hearsay, but it does appear to have legs and could prove to be a bold move for the Beavs to compete in the conference with the big boys.”
          ————
“Was told I couldn’t mention the name. The donors are being asked for big money and they are not just taking a stab at their target. There is mutual interest which seemed so absurd that it was hard for me to believe, That’s why I asked the original question. The name I heard has no college head coaching experience so if that’s what you’re looking for and this is true, I guess you’ll be disappointed!”

          • Sometimes leaks can’t be legitimized because they can only come from one or two places, and it would be known immediately who is talking. The normal leaks like the Hoke contact are dispersed by choice more to feel out public sentiment than anything. If the name is quiet and needs to remain so, then there likely need to be some dealings before the name can even be leaked.

Of course, look at how Eichorst (my new favorite AD) operated and how many rumors were out there about Riley. Perhaps Bobby D learned a little from that and will move more decisively without all the politics.

  5. What gives me hope is I’m pretty sure she had no idea about Tinkle until someone in the AD threw her a bone. The basketball search was ‘open’ compared to this search. Media-types had the names and were updating daily. That’s the kind of stuff that happens when someone in the AD is willingly holding the media’s hand.

    • Makes sense, but has Bronco seen his schedule? BYU as an independent is falling further and further into the abyss. Maybe he knows something about future plans for the program. Playing Savannah St. and Middle Tennesee in November ain’t going to get you much notice.

      • The latest thinking is the flirtations with the Big 12 might pop up again, if the conference sees the lack of a championship game as a hindrance to the playoffs and feels it needs to add 2 teams.

  6. Duck buddy of mine reports that he has until 5:00 today to buy Rose Bowl tickets at $185 each and reserve, if they win, National Championship tickets at $670 each.

Thanks to BDC and Mike Riley for saving us the money. Hip-Hip-Horray! JB

PS: When Riley hits 65 soon the cheer will become “My hip..My hip… oye-vey”

  7. More posts:

donors are growing weary of BDC, and are looking for new energy for the AD position. Potentially from within.

I think that is pretty well documented. Have heard a couple of donors say their wallets are remaining mostly closed until BDC is gone. Donors that have a voice with the University.

  8. From BDC’s letter, “..life lessons, values and character. They will help guide our student-athletes to success in life and careers upon leaving OSU.”

I imagine for some of the kids this is necessary, but for myself I think those are parental and extended family responsibilities. I wouldn’t want an institution teaching my kid “values,” I want them to provide an education. Similarly, if I had a football-playing child, I want the coach to compete ethically and be an effective football coach.

I think the university – or Riley at least – uses the “life lessons” thing as a bit of an out to compensate for competent coaching and play. “Yeah, I can’t call a timeout, teach you to block or tackle, but I’m teaching kids about life here. You have to focus on what’s really important in shaping young men’s lives..” etc. etc.

    • I agree, when did OSU become surrogate parents? If anything college is the opposite: a time for a kid to leave the nest and explore their freedom. If they’re out of control the university can step in and help out, but it’s not their place to be explicitly teaching those traits.

And who thinks Brady Hoke can teach any of that? What happened with his QB last year? Someone told me he pulled a real dick move, but I haven’t researched it.

      • concur. in loco parenti (a Latinate expression , meaning in the place of parents) went by the boards in higher ed in the 1970’s; only to be resurrected by Mike Riley and his boys & girls club outlook on his role

      • You guys are overstating it. Since these kids do get freedom for the first time, the values they need to have instilled are internalized ones–being on time and present, communicating well, learning to live on one’s own, etc. The screening process for acceptance to school takes into account what the kid/s have already learned and how they apply their familial and community values to their personal lives. Colleges take those personal values, enhance them and make them compatible with professional values. They don’t change them.

  9. This is bizarre….

Ryan Easterling ?@RyanEasterling 11m11 minutes ago

DeKalb RB Dre Brown tells me Oregon State just offered him.

Who on the staff is extending offers today?

  10. Again, Machado has got nothing. The only thing she has for sure is pictures so she can get people to sign up.

She’s always behind and is just speculating at this point. There’s no way she’ll be the one to break the news so just ignore her.

Can’t believe angry is falling for the clickbait.

    • I’m not falling for it, just reading it and then commenting on it. e.g. I do not want Hoke. That doesn’t mean I think he’s the coach. I do agree this is a feeler, and we need to squash it, which is pretty much my job at this point. All of you should blow up BDCs mailbox and twitter with a no hoke campaign.

  11. from Nak in the previous thread:

“Tony Dungy’s name came up for some weird ass reason.”

Starting to wonder more about Tony. He fits the criteria of never been a head coach in college and he would also be ‘so absurd it is hard to believe.’

      • from Eggers’ Friday article

“On Friday, Perry was back in his office in Corvallis after returning from a recruiting trip in northern California. He said he isn’t sure whether he will join Riley’s Nebraska staff.

“I don’t have any plans,” Perry said. “I’ll wait and see what Mike has to say when I get a chance to visit with him. You know Mike — he keeps everything close to the vest.”

    • For the last time. Tony Dungy will NOT be coaching anywhere. He was the first call when we hired Kill. They offered him an outrageous amount of money to return to his alma mater and rescue it from the abyss caused by the hiring of Tim Brewster. He has no interest in coaching again. He has a religious based charity he runs. Dungy has been a great fund raiser for the U of Minn. and has been helping out behind the scenes with our football program. He usually speaks to the team a couple of times a year and Kill makes the team read his books.

  12. Per Eggers, the decision of who to hire will be discussed Wednesday, after they announc the VFC renvoations. I trust Eggers sources more than pretty much anybody in the OSU media.

“On Wednesday, OSU officials will make an announcement regarding the $40-million renovation of the Valley Football Center, where the coaches’ offices, locker rooms, equipment rooms, meeting rooms and players’ lounge are housed. It’s going to happen and probably will be ready in time for the 2016 season. That’s a commitment the new coach will like to hear.

That same day, De Carolis, deputy AD Mark Massari, and a couple of inner-circle confidantes will convene to discuss candidates. From that list, a group of finalists will be identified. They will be interviewed and, as soon as early next week, a coach will be hired. ”

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/242955-107303-osu-must-pay-to-play-football?utm_source=New+Media&utm_medium=twitter

    • “You’ve heard names of many candidates for the vacant Oregon State job floated about in recent days, some of them more qualified than others. There are at least a couple of others who have expressed interest in the job who, to lack a better phrase, would knock your socks off.”

      Kerry the tease.

    • Nice article by Eggers. I wish the rest of the Oregon media would strike a tone like this. Eggers- a staunch Riley supporter – pays appropriate homage to Riley for what he’s done for the program, and acknowledges the challenges to coaching in Corvallis.

But it’s presented factually and objectively and not sensationalized. No hand-wringing about the impossibility of replacing Riley and/or being successful in Corvallis. No fatalistic view about OSU’s inherent limitations. The vision to see that the right hire- under the right conditions – could very well take OSU further than Riley could.

  13. There is alot more to Coach Hoke’s story then what the media is reporting. Michigan did not give him or Rich Rod enough time. What buried Hoke was egomaniac AD Dave Brandon with his meddling. The AD sat in on game film with all coordinators and wanted to live thru the coaches. He had no clue what he was walking into with that AD. I wish we would have given him another year. His boys are going to be fully matured on the 2 deep next season. He was transitioning the team back to the traditional way Michigan recruits the big uglies on the line and plays. The years of Rich Rod and the faster smaller type of players he recruited did not fit Michigans system and Rich was told he would have more time when he was hired. But everybody knows Rich was only given 3 years and he was booted. Brady walked into that mess and really had only three years of recruiting his guys back to his system. the first year did not count because he came in so late. He went 11 wins his first year because he had 15 Lloyd Carr recruited seniors built for his system that fought like hell for the team and him.
These are the twitter reactions from his players who loved him. Be sure to read the one from Shane Morris the quarterback who got the concussion that Brady honestly did not see. The AD hung him out to dry and did everything to try to undermine him including sending him out to a press conference without telling him his quarterback had a concussion so he would look like an asshole and the media smelled blood like a shark. The AD “resigned” to protect his future political dreams of becoming a politician. Brady is a people person and a good coach. He is a proven recruiter and the people that know him love him. once he is hired into a place and starts talking to boosters the money will open up for your program. Ball State and SVSU those programs were complete tire fires that needed overhauls. His biggest drawback has been loyalty to some assistants that should never have been brought to Michigan to coach. Hoke needs to have solid hires of his coordinators. If he comes to the Beavers one good thing you can expect is the Defensive side of your team will be way better than what you have ever had. He is a Defensive coach all the way and the offensive side of the ball to left to his coordinator and his staff.

  14. Anybody have any information and views on BDC’s consultant in this process? From Eggers’ article:

“OSU administrators aren’t sitting on their hands. De Carolis has retained a consultant — Kevin Weiberg, the former commissioner of the Big 12 and deputy commissioner of the Pac-12 now working with Atlanta-based College Sports Solutions. He will help identify top-level candidates and advise on how best to make the hire. “

    • Names like Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy would bring a lot of credibility and notoriety to OSU, but the fact that neither has actually coached for 6 or 7 years makes you wonder if they’ve still got the X’s and O’s.

      • I guess I’m a grump because those two have been out of it for so long that it wouldn’t knock my socks off plus do these left field hires ever work out?

On a smaller scale, Jerry Glanville to PSU was the same type of thing and it energized the alumni/fan base for a season or so and then when it became apparent he had no idea how to relate to 20 year olds anymore the whole thing collapsed.

    • I think Cowher COULD be productive and worth watching as a fan.

The key, I think, with somebody like him is if, while recognizing they haves nothing to lose and don’t need the money, still retain pride in their work and motivation. A unique person like that could have an absolute blast in the job and perform well. Someone like Cowher also likely knows how to delegate, freeing themselves up for the critical, and enjoyable, aspects of head coaching and player development.

That said I don’t expect Cowher. And I hope its not Dungy. He doesn’t strike me as that individual I just attempted to describe.

  15. Steve Preece and Bob Grim were special selection committee members for the decision to hire Riley in 2003. If they’re involved again, maybe we’re looking at more “experienced” candidates.

  16. To me “knock your socks off” means it’s almost a given that they will do an outstanding job and galvanize the fan base which seems a little suspect if they’ve never been a college HC before? Logistics might disqualify a current NFL head coach. Man, what a brain twister…..I’m still saying Mike Shanahan, he’s not as old as I thought he was.

  17. Blitz is not a bad read right now. They are actually bashing Schnell (not sure if that’s some of you guys from here migrating there). Big time. Also bashing The Oregonian and Goe.

  18. I think it was Hemsley, but to whomever sent a nice donation to AB this morning thank you. Appreciate that. We don’t technically need them right now as hosting is paid for a few years, but it does make the work feel appreciated.

  19. Apparently I got myself banned from reading or following John Canzano’s tweets. (didn’t know that was possible?)

anyway, somebody replying to him about DE. Are people really thinking OSU would go after Erickson again?

    Coaches Hot Seat ?@CoachesHotSeat

@johncanzanobft Dennis Erickson back to Oregon State? The people at OSU aren’t that stupid are they? Hire a young coach with passion!

  20. So assuming BDC makes a good, exciting hire; how many here are considering donating to OSU Athletics as a result?

Second, if one is not a rich, but comfortable, what is a meaningful range to donate to OSU athletics?

And here I was going to walk away from college football in 2015….

    • I’d get season tickets, but the cheap ones with a small donation. I had season tickets 3 or 4 years ago but with interest so low it is way cheaper to just buy single games and get freebies from people not wanting to make the drive to see a crummy product. I’d buy season tix next year with a good hire just to show support even though I imagine single game tickets will still be cheaper.

    • With a good hire I would definitely donate and look to get season tickets either next year or the following.

The past few years it just hasn’t been worth it to watch a Riley team. No consistency.

  21. Bruce Feldman @BruceFeldmanCFB · 4m 4 minutes ago

#Oregon OC Scott Frost & #UtahState coach Matt Wells among those getting consideration for #Tulsa job, per source. TU has some good options.

  22. Just gave for the first time in a while… With a message about the excitement for the long overdue football head coaching change.. seems like you can select “Other: and give what ever amount you want:

    https://www.ourbeavernation.com/donation/

The more we give the more incentive BDC ET al have to realize there is a truly passionate base who will step up for the right guy.

  23. I’m still not feeling “knock your socks off” with any of those names. I wonder why Eggers wouldn’t just come out and say? Off the record stuff?

    • A guy I work with, who knows Eggers, just told me he’s seen Mack Brown’s name rumored. I’m not saying he got that from Eggers, but just found it interesting since I can’t find any mention of his name connected to Oregon State over the past week in the google machine.

Not somebody I’d be interested at this point in his career, but I could see how that could be considered a “socks off” name to some.

  24. Only guy I would take before Frost is Jim Harbaugh or that level of coach. Seriously think BDC is about to screw up this rare opportunity for a great coach. Ugh…

    • I really don’t think he screws this one up. Sounds like they have plenty of candidates. I bet that leak of Frost/Wells talking to Tulsa is just to gas themselves up. Seems like an agent move to me to get them some more money.

        • Yeah, it’s really tough to put confidence in BDC. Here’s hoping Massari is doing most of the work and decision making since he will likely be the one inheriting it.

        • This will be BDC’s legacy. He has to know that unless he truly has gone senile. I don’t think he can afford to screw this up for his own sake.

          -asdf123456 from the Blowegonian.

    • But why?
Who are they trying to protect or what are they trying to accomplish with that? Why an arbitrary number like 7 days? Why not 6 or 8?

      • It’s to ward off nepotism and the old boy’s club. The thought is that it gives anyone time to send in a resume and cover letter who might be interested. And more than just the direct supervisor gets to look at the pool of candidates and figure out who is qualified to be a finalist.

In the past it was quietly made known to friends and family that there was a job opening, and without proper vetting, friends and family would be the ones who got jobs.

      • There are 7 days in a week, dude. It’s not an arbitrary number.

I have heard similar policies. My company requires a job to be posted for a certain number of days, but I don’t know how many. A week seems reasonable. It’s supposed to give the perception that the hiring process is open to all potential candidates, even if they already know who they will hire. I think it gives people time to identify the opening and time to put your application in.

For a head coach at a Division 1 school it’s pretty silly.

  25. Sad tweet from Peko, kid doesn’t realize Riley bears responsibility for the mishandling of his situation. Or, maybe he does and knows it was his own fault, either way not much of a “life lesson” learned from his state of limbo for so long.

Best of luck @Coach_Riley it has been an honor to have had a year with a legend!
    and:
    Kyle The Creator @kyle_peko65 · Dec 4
Wow I’m a little speechless. Doesn’t look to good for me now…

    • If I didn’t know better, I would have thought Peko’s twitter feed got hijacked by the guy doing the Fake Mike Riley and Fake Bob Decarolis accounts.

      • My take:
        1) If Peko didn’t do what was required and was given multiple second chances, the lesson is not good and reinforces an attitude that “the requirements don’t really apply to me”
        2) If Peko did everything asked of him, then the “legend” that is Riley failed him and failed to teach that the “buck does stop” at the top. That is, Riley led the organization which ask Peko to do the wrong things, things which did not get him eligible even though Peko had done as told.

        • my take is not only is Peko extremely lazy, but……………I’d say he’s dumb as a brick but that would be insulting to bricks

    • That makes no sense when Dee Andros grave is just down the street from the stadium. You have to think costs when discussing Beaver Football.

    • I’ll play devil’s advocate on Smart.

He’s in the Saban coaching tree, and he’s won multiple Assistant Coach awards since he took over as DC in 2008. The guy looks like he’d be an obvious candidate to any of the schools that have hired new coaches in the last five years. He’s already interviewed at Southern Miss, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, and Auburn for HC gigs over the years, but didn’t get any of them.

Maybe he’s one of those lifetime assistants that just isn’t the head coach type. Some people do better in a more defined, supplemental role than they do being the head of an organization.

      • Reminds me of Charlie Strong. Long a candidate for jobs but for whatever reason never got jobs until he got the Louisville job and then became a big name thanks in part to Teddy Bridgewater. I think he’d do well if he got a head coaching job. Just needs the opportunity.

  26. Kirby Smart is my #1 choice as well. Great pedigree and the SEC to PAC background would bring an awesome hybrid approach in my opinion. Plus it would show that BDC and gang went the distance to provide us the best possible future successes.

My question is, what would he cost us?

  27. “Riley built an unprecedented foundation during his time in Corvallis. Now Oregon State football can be taken to greater heights with the right kind of leadership. That’s where Ray and De Carolis come in. They have to come to the table with an offer that will land the man to take the program to the next level.

I’m talking about Mike Leach money, plus market-value salaries for assistant coaches and a firm commitment to facilities and resources in the near future.

The reason is simple: If you want to be a player, be a payer.”

Kerry Eggers has that answer right here…

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/242955-107303-osu-must-pay-to-play-football?utm_source=New+Media&utm_medium=twitter

  28. Semi-big donor (100k a year) that golfs with my father will be in Corvallis on Weds or Thur to meet with Ed Ray. Not sure if it’s a private or general meeting. May not even be about the coaching search, but seems likely.

  29. Could be Jonathan smith? Or a coach that feels that the university doesn’t take things seriously enough for them or they’ve been burned before…the coaches want to see action of facility improvements and also commitments to assuring that they will be backed up by donors first rather than wait until there is success. Leap frog us into success through the donors rather than leap frog donations because of success. It’s changing the mindset of beaver nation in regards to donations…I’d bet the 18,000 by 2018 would work with the right hire?

  30. Damn, Ducks seem to be having a dream sort of season. A birth to the first playoff and likely Heisman winner in Mariota.

Seems like the gap between schools has never been wider. whoever we hire as coach will have some serious ground to make up in order to be competitive.

I’ve hated the Ducks my entire life, but unlike past seasons, I’ll be rooting FOR them against FSU, but only because I hate FSU.

The other factor is that having watched the kid now and reading about him for a few seasons, I think Mariota is deserving of the Heisman, and he’s the first Duck I can remember not outwardly hating. Seems like a really great kid actually.

I say this because it got me thinking about how far apart we seem right now. A year ago, all I wanted was Craig Robinson fired, along with Mark Banker. Now both are gone, with Riley, Cav, and others including Bray as well.

I don’t know if its a “be careful what you wish for” scenario. I see Tinkle being a good hire and I hope we can nail the football coach as well. But, I feel we have lost some substantial continuity that seemed to be one of our strongest points as a program over the last few years.

With Riley, you knew we would mostly be competitive, bowl in most years, and every couple we would have a special season. With whoever we hire, what if we get a Brady Hoke or Muschamp situation that fizzles in a few years?

Hit the reset button again? I’m not sure I like the sounds of that, but it is likely we will be looking for another coach in 3-5 seasons, regardless of who is hired.

    • sure Riley was giving us 6 and 6 seasons but that become the standard the last few year in outside of the Alamo bowl year we were having losing season to me his time was done and he was done with the beavers. Because with a senior leaded team he could not do better the 5-7

      • Yeah and the wins were mostly non-pac12 teams. The real record you need to look at is the pac-12 record… crap,,, we finished 10 of 12 teams.

    • The “continuity” can be a blessing or a curse. In Riley’s case it became a curse. The program became stagnant and consistently bad. I think Riley kind of sucked us into that “Joe Pa” mentality.

I also don’t feel getting a new coach every 5 seasons as necessarily a bad thing. Times change, programs evolve, and so does the college football landscape. It goes with the business.

With that, there is something to be said for liking continuity. I like it as well, I do see your point.

      • no, what I think happened is that BDC got sucked into the attractiveness of the “home town discount” that Riley offered not realizing (until perhaps last week) that it was a classic Faustian bargain.

    • not me. Fuck oregon and that evil empire cesspool it has become. They should change the name to the University of Win at all costs. And their born on third base and think they hit a triple band waggoning fans can eat a bag of shit too. I’m tired of hearing about them

        • but at the same time I cannot in good conscience root for Rapist “fuck her right in the pussy” Winston and FSU. And I also have tOSU in my list of top 5 most hated teams. And Bama is the team I hate the least, but they’re SEC so they can still tongue punch my fart box. So I’m gonna do what’s best for me. Not watch the Rose or Sugar bowls and skip the national championship game as well. Fuck them all. Rest of the bowl games I’ll gladly watch. Which is probably more people watching some of the games than show up in the stands.

    • With Riley, “mostly competitive” was true early on, but gone years ago. So dont feel bad him leaving. If we get a guy who can even just be early Riley, we are way better off than with the zombie Riley. And since the donors have responded and clearly want better, I think its clear we now have higher expectations. I think its a good bet we start doing better, whoever is hired. Sure, it could get worse, but not likely. Quit worring about rolling the dice — we are damn lucky we have this opportunity! …and not zombie Riley until 2021…. THANK YOU, NEBRASKA!!

  31. On the radio just now, Yogi Roth is saying as far as candidates we should be hearing about for this coaching search, he thinks Trent Dilfer is a name we’ll see talked about soon. Also thought Frost and Deruyter were good candidates as well as Baldwin.

      • I emailed Ed Ray and specifically included the beating the Ducks clause and general contract structuring recommendations. He replied back and said contract terms were very important to get right and Bob “was on point on this one”. Not sure if that makes anyone feel better.

  32. from blitz: “Meetings continuing tonight and tomorrow with donors. There is big excitement among the major donors. The. 1.5-1.7 millon dollar a year budget won’t come close to getting the 2 candidates being discussed at meetings today. One candidate would be MUCH more of a surprise then the other but both would be national names that have had major head coaching jobs in the past. The momentuim seems to be there from everyone involved to stop being a 2nd class citizen in our league and in our state. Exciting times to be a Beaver”

    • I’m sure he’s on the radar, but he really doesn’t fit with the idea of getting a big home run guy that would necessitate the big donors being on board.

    • Yeah extra money to get Baldwin would be very underwhelming. I still got Scott Frost #1 and have added Kirby Smart in at #2. Both would be fantastic hires with big upside. Wells I moved back to #3. Want all three to get interviews.

      • It can’t be Baldwin. He’s out. (a) doesn’t fit anything we’re hearing and (b) don’t need extra money to get him. If anything he’d probably be under the 1.5 salary cap. Really think we’d need donors involved for Baldwin?

  33. OSU player just tweeted “OSU swinging for the fences”
    https://twitter.com/hollingsworthlj

Guy on Blitz talking about all this said, “Also logic doesn’t make sense on one of the candidates. I have no idea why he would be interested in OSU and not Michigan etc. I asked the same question”….

    It can’t be Harbaugh, right?

    • I think it might be. I got an email from a guy 2 minutes ago that said Harbaugh’s agent has inquired about the job. And god knows they wouldn’t be using “OSU speculation” for any sort of leverage against any other team.

      • I can’t believe that. Harbaugh must be playing OSU for leverage? Unless he really liked being in the conference…

His son was/is a grad assistant there, so maybe he likes the school? I’m grasping at straws…

        • I know right? Who could you be playing OSU against for leverage? No school if you ask me. The other team would probably laugh. Everybody thinks OSU is broke.

I think he likes college ball. SF is a dumpster fire with all the personnel shit he has to deal with. At Michigan he’d be expected to win national championship pronto. No one thinks that OSU is competing for a national championship year in and year out. Not saying he’s not competitive, I know he is. But the bullshit he’d have to put up with at Michigan is 100x worse than he’d ever face at OSU.

          • Harbaugh. Yes, please!!! Would love to see him down Helfrich next year in Eugene. That would be worth a 3.2 million dollar salary + Duck win bonus IMO. Hope these donors are willing to give it a try!

        • He is friends with Riley, but you would think Riley would be badmouthing OSU to him right now given what happened. Unless what we think happened didn’t really happen and Riley did leave on very good terms. Shit, this is all so confusing.

        • Any chance Harbaugh might be (allegedly) considering OSU as some sort of paternal attempt to get his son a job as an OC in college? I mean, is it plausible that Jim would come to OSU, install his son Jay as the OC, and hope that he could right the ship in 3-5 years, then move on to another gig and leave Jay behind as the heir apparent HC? Seems such a long shot, but there is a (weak) OSU connection through Jay…

          http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers/ci_26279169/jim-harbaughs-son-forges-own-path

          • Could it be that harbaugh misses recruiting? Also, he won’t have to find players that are 3.4 students and higher to get into OSU. We know he can recruit and he has nfl experience now…hmmm so many options for good solid coaches out there…also, could the ‘3 weeks’ pitch be for those playing New Years day bowls?!

    • One of my thoughts was also Harbaugh, but reading stuff out there now it just does not seem plausible. I don’t doubt though that he’s probably crazy enough to think he can take down the Ducks in 2 or 3 years. It’s probably a pipe dream, but it would not surprise me if that was the “absurb” name.

    • Would current players even know the names of candidates at this juncture? What did they do, have the entire team sign NDA’s? Hollingsworth is grasping for straws too.

      • I agree. Luke is probably playing the roll of a hopeful fan right now like us. He previously linked eggers article about spending money. Probably just excited since he knows he’s stuck here with whatever the outcome is.

  34. Got inside info from a graduating senior as to what happened with Riley leaving…

Supposedly Friday after the civil war loss Decarolis called Riley into his office and told him all the old blood must go (Semalu, Banker, Read. and Cav). Riley told him that he’d think about it, and left for California for recruiting.

Riley then “bumped” into a rep from Nebraska in Cali who offered him the job… Riley accepted pretty much on the spot.

    So there is that.

  35. Regarding Harbaugh, he obviously has been a college HC. That original rumor was….never a college HC.

Eggers “tease” could be different from the shit going around on The Blitz.
