Conspiracy Theory (And NO to Brady Hoke).

190

If anyone actually has credible sources and wants to share info, shoot me an email.

An admin just showed up on blitz posting a quote about Hoke, then said not to be a hater if he’s the coach.

So over there they have a regular member dropping rumors that some all-world coach is interested in OSU (even implying it could be Harbaugh), yet this guy can’t name names. Meanwhile, the admin and Mamma Machado are implying it’s Hoke.

It seems like a ploy by blitz to get people all riled up so they sign up for a membership. Why do I feel like BDC decided on Hoke days ago and this is all a smoke screen to make it look like they aimed big? Crazy conspiracy theory or something OSU and the “aim low” crowd would try? (I.e. we aimed big, didn’t work, got the guy who Michigan is paying for).

  1. Well, their ploy worked on me. I signed up for a monthly subscription tonight. Really dont enjoy the site layout though. This site is so much more simple and interesting. Blitz sucks.

  2. It’s crap. you know it, i know it.

machado is probably posting under different names to stir shit up. i bet she was the high school drama queen.

  3. Just the thought of Brady Hoke getting the job makes me super sad. It would be such a let down after imagining Frost, Wells, Harbaugh, or even Baldwin taking the helm.

  4. I don’t think its Hoke. Eggers is implying similar things, people with links to the program (players, former players) are implying similar things.

I don’t know what will happen but I do think they are swinging for the fences, doubt Hoke is the guy.

(Maybe I am just in denial but Riley’s gone and I want to be an optimist for awhile).

    • Yeah, we have DA, Eggers, even Ed Ray saying they are pushing for some big things. I think you are right. Obviously they need to get the financial backing to go after the big names and that big name has to agree, so who knows what will happen.

Hell, most people seemed happier with a Tedford hire than Hoke so we don’t even know if it will be Hoke if not one of the big names.

      • Matt Foley’s a pretty big dude… I hope that’s not what you’re implying. Is Hoke’s long lost twin the governor of the Garden State? Foly’s wife must cut his hair.

  5. There’s stuff out there about Hoke as a Colorado St. candidate, but it seems to be ignored on the Oregon sites. He already has the MWC connection.

  6. Harbaugh was the first name that popped in to my head when I read Riley was gone, but the idea was so far fetched I never even said it out loud.

    • Me too. Just a fantasy but man if we actually get Harbaugh I’m calling Bekins and immediately moving back to Portlandia. In fact Portlandia should look into a Riley parody with Fred Armisen wearing 10 layers of dri-fit doing a Opie presser following a loss to PSU.

    • Me too. The day Riley left, my wife asked me what my absolute best case scenario hire would be. Harbaugh was the name. She laughed at me, and I laughed at myself. Now though…

    • It would be the most epic of fails. With a guy like Hoke, OSU has to have the leverage. “You want to work here? We’ll pay you xxxx dollars” If he doesn’t like it, go try his luck somewhere else. Hoke’s regression the last 4 years do not fit the description of an exciting hire. No matter the reason(s) for the regression. It’s a complete fucking anit-boner hire!

  7. There is no way in hell that Jim Harbaugh would become the new head coach at OSU. He could have his choice of multiple NFL head coaching gigs or pretty much any college job that he wants and you guys are honestly thinking that he would choose OSU?

    • The gulf between expressing an interest and coming to the table to negoitiate can be huge. Who knows the actual motivation and how serious these behind the scenes big names really are? All I know is the wait is going to kill me. I was so excited when DE replaced MR, I hope to have that same thrill again.

    • two lines stand out: he likes the west coast (ergo doesn’t want Michigan job) and the prospect that something insane might happen. That would be definition to describe his taking the job in Corvallis

  8. Re my comment above:

Relying solely on employing the SWAG method (Scientific Wild-Ass Guess) of deductive reasoning, I’m suggesting that it might be John — not Jim — Harbaugh that’s the target. He’s never been a college HC and I recall reading somewhere that he’s expressed an interest in returning to college FB. Just sayin’.

    • Might make sense. I can’t see him wanting out of the Ravens job. Won a SB a couple years back and they’re in the playoff mix again this year. Although not the same team that won it all two years ago. But I can’t see any reason why he’d want to leave less than 2 years removed from a SB win.

    • Fits the criteria of never been a college head coach. He currently makes $6.5 mil per year so Ed Ray would need to get the donors to write some big checks this week.

  9. Angry you said this in the last thread: “Guy on Blitz talking about all this said, “Also logic doesn’t make sense on one of the candidates. I have no idea why he would be interested in OSU and not Michigan etc. I asked the same question”….

    It can’t be Harbaugh, right?”

I think it might be Schiano

    • Instead of “bringing their lunch pails, OSU would “chop wood.” Has to be him doesn’t it?!? And he’s allegedly preparing for a return to the college ranks:

“…it’s hard to imagine that his focus won’t turn to another building project once the head-coaching carousel begins to spin in the coming weeks.

Schiano has done plenty of work to ready himself for a return to college football. He keeps binders filled with DVDs of all his team meetings from the NFL, watching them to take notes on what he would add to his presentations, which he considers the equivalent of Football 101. He has also conducted a recruiting study to identify what geographic areas NFL draft picks hail from (short answer: Florida, California and Texas) to help refine his recruiting focus upon his return. He hosted former Kansas and Notre Dame recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello to catch up on what he has missed on the recruiting trail. He even joined Twitter under a secret account to keep up on news and better understand how recruits and media consume information. ”

      “http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2014/11/former_rutgers_coach_greg_schiano_speaks_hints_that_a_return_to_the_sideline_could_be_coming_soon.html”

      Oh the sport of speculation…

  10. Hearing the guy talk about wanting Pat Hill on the Joe Beaver Show today made me want to simultaneously weep, facepalm, and strangle someone

  11. Portland State: Offensive coordinator Bruce Barnum will serve as interim head coach through the 2015 season. The school is in the process of hiring a new athletic director, and a school spokesperson tells The Oregonian they want to let the new AD hire a coach without sacrificing this year’s recruiting class.

    • PSU doesn’t seem to have much desire to change anymore. Its sad to see them give up like that. I spent lots of Saturdays in Civic Stadium in the late 80s early 90s. Pokey Allen, Chris Crawford, Darren Del Andrae, John Charles…good times.

  12. Tulsa: Oregon offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Scott Frost and Utah State head coach Matt Wells are in the mix at Tulsa, according to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman. Here’s what Wells said about his name in the coaching carousel.

I take that to mean that OSU is thinking higher than those two. But if they’re thinking Hoke, uhhh I’m out. I’d take Wells over Hoke in a heartbeat

    http://coachingsearch.com/coaching-search-ticker

    • Frost and Wells would both be so much better for OSU than Hoke the joke. BDC better not be reverting to his “this could be the First brother-in-law” thinking and jeapordizing a 5-7 year decision over the 2nd game our new coach will be in at UM. That would be the stupidest reasoning ever but sadly it has been mentioned more than once (Granted mostly by those idiots at the Oregonian). Faceplant hire if BDC went Hoke. Michigan isn’t even good as a program anymore.

  13. Also Shiano’s name is being mentioned in the Meechicken dumpster fire. But I doubt that’s a splashy enough hire for those arrogant, entitled assholes.

    • A few good guitar hooks. Still a great overall sound and the singer’s voice sounds better than it did on albums from the 80’s and 90’s, which is amazing. Or it just sounded really bad previously, take your pick.

Lyrics weak/lazy as expected. Like Jack said, an AC/DC album is just an excuse for the band to play. And for some of the guitar that results, and the sound, that’s all right by me.

    • Maybe, that would be awesome, but the only way he comes to OSU over Michigan is if he want a ‘lower stress environment’ Michigan will out bid us no matter what we come up with. Could be that we are chasing the other brother though, Jim will likely be unemployed at the end of the year. Harbaugh bowl at the big house anyone?

  14. #Vince Lombardi’s DNA used to clone new coach for Oregon State. Announcement coming soon after legal and ethical issues with family and the Catholic Church are resolved. #fight, fight fight!

  15. In an e-mail to The Associated Press on Monday, Tom Osborne, the coach who led Nebraska to three national titles wrote, “I don’t know Mike Riley, I wish him the very best”.

Thanks for that ringing endorsement coach….!

    • After the buzz on the “mystery candidates” I can’t help but yawn a little bit. Let’s start the elimination process. Hoke/Baldwin…bye,bye…….Mendenhall/Wells on to the next round.

      • Totally, just added that because its the first we’ve heard that wells has been contacted.

After reading the article, any chance harbaugh is using OSU to get a fat offer to then leverage against Michigan? Its not like there are any other high profile jobs out there

    • IF that is accurate, and we have no idea if it is, then the “knock your socks off” or “swinging for the fences” candidate isn’t on that list.

I like both Wells and Mendenhall, and think both would be coaching upgrades over Riley and would field more competent teams.

But this candidate list suggest expectations of/for OSU are really low and that multiple sources have perceptions from different people. For example, I doubt that Derek Anderson’s vague tweets are in response to this list, and I doubt Eggers remarks are either.

If that’s the list, I think I like Wells the best. Mendendhall is a great game coach, and I like that fact that he canned underperforming assistants. But I suspect Wells ceiling is hire and that he could recruit more broadly. Though its not fair, I think Mendenhall’s Mormon faith might limit recruits perceptions of him and OSU.

      • IF that is accurate, and we have no idea if it is, then the “knock your socks off” or “swinging for the fences” candidate isn’t on that list. Which is why I’m considering this is an orchestrated farce just to look like they went big. It’s not hard to get Eggers and others on board…just leak a rumor to them. Ed Ray doesn’t like to spend on sports, but probably doesn’t want to look bad going cheap. I wouldn’t be surprised if the big name is never known, or if it is, that name denies ever being contacted. Now the less cynical side of me says I hope I’m wrong, donors have years of pent up money burning holes in their pockets, this is all to be taken face value, etc.

        • This clarification was posted on Blitz. Sounds like some CYA going on here since people are starting to grow skeptical of these big rumors.

” I see a lot of mixed messages, and I want to make sure that we keep a few things straight, at last to he best of my knowledge:The desire to meet with boosters was not for Hoke necessarily. Or any of the names we have tossed around. It was to get the funds to go high for a name that deserves high.  Basically they want to make sure that they can cover the market cost for the name they want. It doesn’t mean that if they can’t agree with the big names, that they will offer the same money to someone like Tedford or even Wilcox. They will most likely interview multiple people, and unless the law was rescinded, one of them will need to be a minority.  So there is going to be more than one name and they will most likely have different price tags assigned to them. With in conference poaches, we will have to fight them and their boosters for the coaches.  Getting a guy like Scott Frost will mean we have to beat out Uncle Phil in a contract battle. Even if we do raise a lot of money and hire a guy like Hoke, we are probably going to want a lot of money to get the best assistants money can buy.  So lets not get caught up on the numbers because a lot of that might go to other people as well. Think Tinkle’s staff.I know that this stuff is probably common sense, but I keep seeing people get up in arms with a less than stellar name and wonder why the boosters were brought in for that name.  I would guarantee that Hoke at least gets an interview. I would also say that I strongly think before it is all done Frost and/or Wilcox will get one as well.  The two uber coaching prospects will get a look if they are not out of our range after meeting with the donors. Anyway, I hope this isn’t jerky of me, I don’t have a ton of info on this, but in conversations I have had and in reading between the lines  of some interviews I am confident these are accurate and I just don’t want people getting upset if they don’t have to. There is plenty of things to worry and fuss about… :)”

          • “The two uber coaching prospects will get a look if they are not out of our range after meeting with the donors. Anyway, I hope this isn’t jerky of me,”

            It is.

          • If Hoke gets an interview, he probably gets the job based on the relationships to BDC.

If he’s the “big name,” it’s really only because he coached at Michigan, right? Not because of Ball State.

Schiano is interesting to me because he’s motivated, learning from mistakes, and preparing.

          • concur on Schiano. Gino Torretta just suggested to Jack Arute that the reason anyone might take a pass on Michigan is the fact that its culture is riven with factions in the post-Schembecler era

        • Or they could end up pulling the same shit Nebraska did with the Riley hire, “we know he’s not great but he’s bringing Frost and Orgeron! It’s an all star team of world beaters!”

Meanwhile, he drags along his gang of lackeys…

  16. If Riley leaves Brennan and Perry, he’s dumber than I thought.

What’s the news on Seumalo and Brasfield? If I had to pick and choose which assistants to keep, Bray is the only one I would miss at this point. And his unit didn’t exactly perform well these last two seasons. But I think everyone gives him a pass because Banker just sucks.

  17. You know, when you think about it, coaching salaries and expectations are pretty ridiculous. I know that NCAA football isn’t just a sport, but a massive entertainment industry with huge ratings and advertising sales, but Jesus Tits, after $2M a year, how much does a guy need?!? Figure in taxes and add some more if you want.

The notion that the market price for a top coach or serious up-and-comer is $2.5M – 3M+ is crazy.

But you can guess I don’t reside in a tax bracket that can relate to these problems.

    • I agree with you that it is dumb. I think there are only 2 options though. Find a good coach and pay them what they are worth and make the financial investments necessary to take the program to the next level or dismantle the football program altogether. Continuing down the path to P12 bottom feeder is only going to lead to more unfunded liabilities.

  18. Machado falling a bit behind on some of the news. Reported this morning that Banker officially joined Nebby as DC.

Some of the other news, though, confirms what Deep Eye (er Electric Eye) was saying days ago, so credibility points to him/her.

  19. Seeing how we have no real news and are stuck to speculation I’ll go ahead and toss out a name that hasn’t been mentioned yet; Mike Singletary.

    He is…
    1. Unemployed
    2. NFL experience
    3. Fits the OSU “moral mentality /integrity” aspect.

Not saying id want him as a coach, but with no real news, I think we have just about reached that point.

  20. The Big Red machine at NU is really going to be hummin,’ Now being reported that Associate Athletic Director for Football Operations Dan Van De Riet is joining Mike Riley’s staff at Nebraska.

This is going the direction of a nearly complete mediocrity transplant.

  21. Why can’t there be a middle ground? Why not find an up and comer who’s willing to take on the OSU challenges because they WANT THE OPPORTUNITY to prove themselves?

The situation as I see it (course I’m blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other)….

    – Not so very long ago OSU had the reputation of being a graveyard for football coaching careers.

    – The OSU athletic department is in debt big time.

    – The attendance/seating capacity of the stadium does not provide a lot of excess cash even if every game is a sellout.

    – OSU does not have the fan base or the television audience of the larger schools.

    – Corvallis does not have the weather, night life, etc. that a lot of kids (and coach’s wives) are looking for. At least that’s what the rumor was about MR’s wife.

    – imo a major downturn in the economy is on the horizon and it very well could turn into a major depression. Because of that I believe OSU should be doing what we all should be doing and that’s paying off our debts and preparing ourselves for tough times. OSU should not be taking a bunch of debt obligations that would come with some big name, over paid HC.

By any chance do any of you who are into history know what the attendance was for sporting events in the early 1930’s? Things have a chance of getting that bad.

  22. Just had an idea to keep things interested. Instead throwing names out there for potential coaching candidates and driving ourselves crazy with rumors and un-sourced info from twitter/blitz/etc…….

How about we starting making our list of token minority candidates who will get the interview to appease the state of Oregon rules? I really haven’t heard any mention of a single minority candidate from any of the news sites yet. For basketball, is was Damon Stoudamire, and his name came out pretty early on in the process.

I’m curious to see who everybody realistically thinks OSU will interview.

  23. Man, you gotta get your forums up and running. Prime opportunity right now with the coaching search and the pure-orange site constantly down.

    • Did a great job of rebuilding Rutgers (even more dismal history than OSU). Appears to be open to changing his philosophies and looking to improve himself (we’ll see though). Was kind of a flop in TB but he was dealing with Freeman. I look at it like hiring a motivated Mike Riley in 2003 all over again. Not in love with it but more interested in Schiano than a lot of other names I see floating around. To me the most important thing is practice reps, and a simplification of play calling. Chip Kelly is running so many plays in practice he is getting his 2nd and 3rd string QBs reps, that is unheard of in the NFL. We need someone that is of that mindset. I am not sure if Schiano picked up on that nuance in his year long tour of successful football programs.

  24. Oh I know all about him. I was living near Rutgers at that time and had friends from there. Pretty sure he cheated on the recruiting trail to turn things around, only got to .500 even doing so, and then failed in the NFL.
