Home Athletics Bob DeCarolis Hiring Gary Andersen

Bob DeCarolis Hiring Gary Andersen

80

Great he hired Gary Andersen, but I think Gary Andersen contacted BDC, so let’s not go overboard with the praise.

What I think happened: G.A. got killed by Ohio State. Based on his post game interview, he seemed to think Ohio State had superior talent and he needed better recruits. Wisconsin has high academic standards for football players, and he couldn’t get his guys in. Barry Alvarez, in his press conference today, said that Andersen told him he prefers the West Coast, and he wanted to move his family. Kept stressing this was a family decision. So it seems like Gary Anderson thought (a) I can get my recruits to OSU (b)  I like the west and (c) I should call BDC and gauge interest.

This fits with all the clues we were hearing on Blitz how a mystery candidate was interested, it made no sense, and this person actually contacted OSU.

Good job by the Athletic Department to seal the deal and get donors on board once Andersen expressed interest, but I don’t think BDC had Andersen on any lists.

This post is not to rain on parades. It’s written for the historical record/posterity.

  1. not to be that guy and I know it is way too early but how many wins do you think the Beavers could get next year I’m guess 5 maybe 6 I’m just think this team has too many holes in it. With the old staff 3-4 wins at best I’d think.

    weber state W
    Michigan L

    Stanford W
    Zona L

    Cal W/L

    I hope I’m wrong but…..

  2. Ted Miller tweet: My assumption is Dave Aranda will come to Oregon State w/ Andersen, so that’s an A-list defensive pair. Count on running game upgrade, too.

  3. We won’t be lacking for news between now and next season’s kickoff. What we will hopefully miss is the steep learning curve for our QB’s. The rest of our skill position set is no worse than adequate and some stars should emerge. Our best OL guy returns healthy, cross our fingers. There is a chance on O for OSU to be good.

The real mystery is the D. All those graduated seniors mean lots of slots are open. That’ll boost recruiting not to mention make for a whale of a spring practice as everyone fights for those positions. Heck, we may even have a real spring game for a change!

Add in a fillip or three from the special teams to make them special and .500 looks reasonable with the schedule we play. Last I looked we’re playing Michigan, not tOSU, so there won’t be any 59-0 nonsense from this Big Ten opponent. The Wolverines still have Hoke don’t they? LOL!

  4. The way I see it, we have 4 guys on our staff still…unless they get let go by Andersen:

    1) Rod Perry DB
    2) Brent Brennan WR
    3) Brasfield RB
    4) Garrett O
    5) joe Seumalo

I see no reason to let Brent Brennan not Garrett go at this point, unless Andersen is bringing in better guys/recruiters…

  5. It makes perfect sense that Andersen initiated the contact with OSU, as he was not on a hot seat, and would not be on any reasonable list BDC and associates would make of guys to go after.

A set of fortuitous circumstances, not the least of which was Riley showing his colors and bailing. BDC might get some credit for that, as according to Riley-speak, the coach was all about family, continuity, loyalty, yatta yatta…. So BDC must have put some pressure on.

  6. I would still like to know if the NFL guy really existed….no college HC experience.. I think OSU is a very decent job and has been for the last 15 years despite what the media tries to tell us. Be nice to know all names who inquired.

    • I heard that John Gruden’s agent contacted OSU, but that they could not come up with the 10 million that he wanted for a 2 year contract. Did anyone else hear anything about this?

    • Maybe Dr. Ray thought Riley was a fucking douchebag and that’s why he was never at football games or expressed any interest in sports?

There’s a LOT of contempt in that press conference. Plus BDC’s comments about everyone being aligned now….

Mike Riley, you are the weakest link.

      Goodbye.

      • I would like to believe your comments about him never being at games, but he went on a rant about the upgrades and how it will save him having to leave the stadium or walk to the field and back up the stands to get around the valley to glad hand boosters/ the visiting AD.

      • Man, hard to listen to Bob (I won’t call him by my favorite nickname today). Dude should take a public speaking course. Yes, some details are needed but speak from the heart like your boss did. Bob licking his fingers as he turns his pages is killin me.

    • Maybe it’s been a phase thing with Dr. Ray? He’s an economist with a Stanford education and felt he needed to shore up the academic side first (I have to agree that’s the right thing to do). Now that he’s gotten the academic side going and with Opie bailing he just thought it was the right time to put the pedal to the metal. He follows tOSU football so he’s gotta like sports. OSUProf has always said that Dr. Ray has done a whole heck of a lot for athletics and I tend to agree. I think he’s the best overall president that the University has had in its history. Love the fire! They should have let him lead the presser instead of BDC.

  7. I’ve heard several rumors as to why Andersen decided to get the hell out of Madison.

    1. Wanted more $$$ for assistants and was rebuffed
    2. Wanted to change over to the spread offense. This did not please Wisky faithful
    3. Wanted to get back to the west coast for his family
    4. Barry Alvarez would not let him be and micromanaged every little bit of “his baby” that he built

I kind of hope that Andersen doesn’t change to the spread and sticks to the ground and pound philosophy. That could really work here in the northwest with the fall/winter weather. If Stanford can do that and combine it with solid defense, why can’t the beavers? It was the blueprint for Stanford beating the ducks two years in a row. Why not?

  8. It’s kind of awkward…..in my mind the problem was Riley not the facilities. Don’t get me wrong, upgrades were needed. I shudder to think that they weren’t really going to ever do anything about Riley because of his insane contract, maybe Eddie boy is letting the frustration out on that. Maybe he did want to fire Riley, but knew it was not economically feasible. BDC better watch out, he may actually get fired by Ed, he’s on a roll!

  9. Michigan alum and die hard fan sent me a text today congratulating the hire and bummed they couldn’t get somebody like Andersen. Fuck off, Schnell.

  10. got the text while sitting in the short bus (that’s what whiskey calls his CRV) waiting for my oldest son to get out of school. Was told I won the bet (my buddy bet me it would be a retread or up and comer from a lower tier school) and to check out espn.com. I did and my eyes got big. Then I said to myself, no way! Then I did a fist pump. Hand to god. My 8 year old in the car can attest. OSU hired a great coach today. I don’t expect a miracle next season but I don’t think a bowl game is out of the realm of possibility. Let’s see what the new staff can accomplish in spring and fall camps!

  11. So, I’ve heard Bob had already put together a large portion of Riley’s buyout before Mike even left. Considering Andersen’s buyout was $3 million, that’s a big reason we actually were able to swing this deal. For that, I give Bob huge props.

Great timing by Nebraska. Thanks Huskers!

  12. Sounds like BDC did put some pressure on Riley Monday morning, and the Call from Nebraska came Monday afternoon.

“Three sources told me that De Carolis wanted to eliminate multiyear contracts for Beaver assistant coaches — something Riley had fought hard for in recent years — and also wanted to renegotiate Riley’s deal to pare the years remaining down from seven.”

  13. That is life for you. People want to think that they got to the top through hard work but the fact is there are a lot of people busting their asses and not a lot of people on top. At some point luck is a factor in everyone’s life. It is like idiots that mindlessly argue about the DOW being the benchmark for a presidents success.

  14. Someone really needs to keep an accurate list of all the a-hole media people that have bagged on Corvallis complete with actual quotes and audio/video clips for future reference. Hearing Corvallis getting shredded on Jim Rome today really got under my skin. Calling Reser a glorified high school stadium and how it ain’t no Camp Randall. I’ve been to both stadiums and even Reser’s old side holds its own against CR! The camp has been renovated but its age still shows through horribly with its lack of bathrooms, very narrow exit halls, video boards for fans, and angle of site to the field. How do national media people get away with this kind iif stuff? They’re either making assumptions or re-spewing what they heard elsewhere. Bevergopher, amiright? You’ve been to both stadiums more recently than I.
With this new hire and the continued financial investment in our football program we need to slap these fuckers back in their face in a couple hears when this ship is at full sail, and do it frequently and with good solid information!

    • I just went after Rome on twitter.

I downloaded his show and listened…he says he’s not going after osu fans, but then he does. The callers were bad, too.
