Great he hired Gary Andersen, but I think Gary Andersen contacted BDC, so let’s not go overboard with the praise.
What I think happened: G.A. got killed by Ohio State. Based on his post game interview, he seemed to think Ohio State had superior talent and he needed better recruits. Wisconsin has high academic standards for football players, and he couldn’t get his guys in. Barry Alvarez, in his press conference today, said that Andersen told him he prefers the West Coast, and he wanted to move his family. Kept stressing this was a family decision. So it seems like Gary Anderson thought (a) I can get my recruits to OSU (b) I like the west and (c) I should call BDC and gauge interest.
This fits with all the clues we were hearing on Blitz how a mystery candidate was interested, it made no sense, and this person actually contacted OSU.
Good job by the Athletic Department to seal the deal and get donors on board once Andersen expressed interest, but I don’t think BDC had Andersen on any lists.
This post is not to rain on parades. It’s written for the historical record/posterity.
If BDC backed into this hire, so be it. I’ll take it
Agreed
Dr Ray is fired up!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hs-xJKLhZQ
would have like to hear a F U Reily at the end of this lol
I think Pres. Ray has finally realised that he has to help the football program get on its feet to get it to self sustaining in order for OSU to have continued success.
Quotes from President Ray:
“This is going to be a world class facilty. And then from now on, at least on my watch, everything we do is going to be world class.”
“We are not done. We are not even close to done. The best is yet to come.”
I like what I’m hearing. Will donate more.
Wow! He was fired up. Love it
Loved this comment by Ed Ray and I took it as a dig at Riley
“I don’t want us to be mediocre at anything”
why are good things happening to us? I feel like a abused dog that flinches at the kind hand reaching out to pet it…
Aliens, under the leadership of that great Beaver in the Sky, have taken over the minds of Riley, Andersen, etal….
I know what you mean. Its kinda like …this must be a dream…
Gary Andersen to the beavers???

LMAO. Good analogy
Your theory is debunked. Nobody wants to coach in Corvallis.
not to be that guy and I know it is way too early but how many wins do you think the Beavers could get next year I’m guess 5 maybe 6 I’m just think this team has too many holes in it. With the old staff 3-4 wins at best I’d think.
weber state W
Michigan L
SJS W
Stanford W
Zona L
Cougs W
Buff W
Utes L
Cal W/L
Dogs L
Ducks L
I hope I’m wrong but…..
why can’t the beavs win in Ann Arbor? It’s not like Meechicken has been world beaters lately. Utah whooped them in the big house
just because it is in the Big house and there are a lot of new guys starting next year…like I said I could be dead wrong I’d not bet my house on this and it is way too early
They’ll be breaking in a new coach and system too. I’d say we have a 50/50 shot. Right?
Could have a bunch of new guys eager to show Riley their asses too…
Probably right but it’s amazing what a good coach who is not burnt out can accomplish
Today who cares… if we lose them all next year so be it. Today with facilities announcement and the best coach hire one could imagine… today is a good day. Today is the first step towards relevance.
Impossible to say without knowing the QB or system. I don’t think the cupboard is bare. Andersen likes to bring in Jucos, too…a lot can happen to improve.
Also take in to consideration that his DC runs a 3-4 and he ran a spread at Utah State…
If the players have to adjust to new schemes they don’t fit as well then it could be pretty rough.
But he also didn’t convert UW right away to the spread, and transitioned slowly to adapt to the personnel.
Our players fit the 3-4 better than they do the 4-3… except for depth at the NT.
Ted Miller tweet: My assumption is Dave Aranda will come to Oregon State w/ Andersen, so that’s an A-list defensive pair. Count on running game upgrade, too.
Utah State’s defenses were highly ranked, too.
how about the OC I’ve not hearing great things about Ludwig
He seems to be the weak link.
Perhaps Baldwim could be considered. Be a pay raise over HC at EWU. Ludwig can’t be too bad. Wisconsin player rushed for 422 yards. It will be nice to see OSU routinely rushing for 200+ in games next year.
I was a duck fan back before I needed an education, which was when Ludwig was OC. He was shit. Very predictable play calling. I haven’t watched Wisconsin play recently so not sure if he cracked his playbook past page 2, but I’d rather get someone else.
Crap.
If he wants to institute more of a spread offense here then he would probably (hopefully) ditch Ludwig who is more of a pro style guy.
They have a connection from Utah, but I’m guessing he was hired at Wisconsin since they did not want to accept a spread offense up there.
So he used Ludwig at Utah and they ran a spread, then he took Ludwig to Madison and they used Alvarez’s offense? That is bizarre.
Well he was OC at Fresno with David Carr (pro style), Oregon with Clemens (pro style), then Utah after Urban Meyer under Kyle Whittingham.
He then went to Cal under Tedford (pro style) and actually coached Ryan Katz as OC at SDSU (not sure?). Then pro style again at Wisconsin.
From what I’ve read Utah fans were upset because he went with a lot more pro style concepts than they had used under Urban Meyer. I don’t think he’s a “spread guy” at heart, but I guess he still used elements of spread and pro style.
I haven’t seen much of Utah State… are they a similar mishmash of spread and pro-style concepts? Maybe Ludwig will be his guy then.

http://goldenbearlair.com/2011/07/17/offensive-coordinator-carousel-at-cal-continues-andy-ludwig-out-jim-mchalczik-in/
actually it’s not if you consider one of the reasons Andersen wanted out of Madison. They want the old school big boy football 3 yards and a cloud of dust brand there. Wisky running the spread? Blasphemy!
Ludwig was formerly an OC with the ducks under Bellotti. Fans hated him. But it is Eugene, so take that for what it’s worth
Ed Ray’s comments and his fiery sentiments are the telling factor. This is our house, not standing for mediocrity, doing well in everything (which could be read in athletic terms as baseball, hoops AND football) is right out of the Angrybeav narrative. The discourse and course of OSU football has changed.
so what you are saying that was a FU to Reily then lol
Football was going to be sticking out like a sore thumb with the improvement and success of many sports at OSU.
Yes Please!
We won’t be lacking for news between now and next season’s kickoff. What we will hopefully miss is the steep learning curve for our QB’s. The rest of our skill position set is no worse than adequate and some stars should emerge. Our best OL guy returns healthy, cross our fingers. There is a chance on O for OSU to be good.
The real mystery is the D. All those graduated seniors mean lots of slots are open. That’ll boost recruiting not to mention make for a whale of a spring practice as everyone fights for those positions. Heck, we may even have a real spring game for a change!
Add in a fillip or three from the special teams to make them special and .500 looks reasonable with the schedule we play. Last I looked we’re playing Michigan, not tOSU, so there won’t be any 59-0 nonsense from this Big Ten opponent. The Wolverines still have Hoke don’t they? LOL!
Spring game might stay bleh:
http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/98967/spring-game-recap-wisconsin-3
The way I see it, we have 4 guys on our staff still…unless they get let go by Andersen:
1) Rod Perry DB
2) Brent Brennan WR
3) Brasfield RB
4) Garrett O
5) joe Seumalo
I see no reason to let Brent Brennan not Garrett go at this point, unless Andersen is bringing in better guys/recruiters…
Here is the link for the Wisconsin coaches bios if anyone is interested. I’m finally getting off the ‘high’ of this hire. So pax te cum!
http://m.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/wis-m-footbl-mtt-mobile.html Forgot the link…
I hope Brennan stays. 50/50 on Perry and Seumalo, the other two, bye.
Have to see what coach Andersen wants to do. But I do hope he brings his DC with him
Well hopefully he’ll bring Kauha’aha’a with him so seumalo will probably be gone which might make things weird with Isaac (transfer?). Kauha’aha’a has been with Andersen since Utah state so I think it’s likely. I’m fine if he sticks with Perry.
If GA is truly D minded, he could move Seumalo to the OLBs (the 5-teqs) and Kauha’aha’a can handle the down-linemen. And, here’s where we may be failing in our Beav luck, instead of a dedicated ST coach we can also have an ILBs coach.
It makes perfect sense that Andersen initiated the contact with OSU, as he was not on a hot seat, and would not be on any reasonable list BDC and associates would make of guys to go after.
A set of fortuitous circumstances, not the least of which was Riley showing his colors and bailing. BDC might get some credit for that, as according to Riley-speak, the coach was all about family, continuity, loyalty, yatta yatta…. So BDC must have put some pressure on.
I would still like to know if the NFL guy really existed….no college HC experience.. I think OSU is a very decent job and has been for the last 15 years despite what the media tries to tell us. Be nice to know all names who inquired.
I heard that John Gruden’s agent contacted OSU, but that they could not come up with the 10 million that he wanted for a 2 year contract. Did anyone else hear anything about this?
Press conference for those who missed it. Ed Ray is going bananas over sports. It’s odd to see.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT2InkWRkks
And great to see.
Maybe Dr. Ray thought Riley was a fucking douchebag and that’s why he was never at football games or expressed any interest in sports?
There’s a LOT of contempt in that press conference. Plus BDC’s comments about everyone being aligned now….
Mike Riley, you are the weakest link.
Goodbye.
I would like to believe your comments about him never being at games, but he went on a rant about the upgrades and how it will save him having to leave the stadium or walk to the field and back up the stands to get around the valley to glad hand boosters/ the visiting AD.
Hey – don’t steal my name!
Man, hard to listen to Bob (I won’t call him by my favorite nickname today). Dude should take a public speaking course. Yes, some details are needed but speak from the heart like your boss did. Bob licking his fingers as he turns his pages is killin me.
Maybe it’s been a phase thing with Dr. Ray? He’s an economist with a Stanford education and felt he needed to shore up the academic side first (I have to agree that’s the right thing to do). Now that he’s gotten the academic side going and with Opie bailing he just thought it was the right time to put the pedal to the metal. He follows tOSU football so he’s gotta like sports. OSUProf has always said that Dr. Ray has done a whole heck of a lot for athletics and I tend to agree. I think he’s the best overall president that the University has had in its history. Love the fire! They should have let him lead the presser instead of BDC.
I’ve heard several rumors as to why Andersen decided to get the hell out of Madison.
1. Wanted more $$$ for assistants and was rebuffed
2. Wanted to change over to the spread offense. This did not please Wisky faithful
3. Wanted to get back to the west coast for his family
4. Barry Alvarez would not let him be and micromanaged every little bit of “his baby” that he built
I kind of hope that Andersen doesn’t change to the spread and sticks to the ground and pound philosophy. That could really work here in the northwest with the fall/winter weather. If Stanford can do that and combine it with solid defense, why can’t the beavers? It was the blueprint for Stanford beating the ducks two years in a row. Why not?
Please, Great Beaver ITS, that he run a system that suits the talent, not like Riley running his complex system whether he had the horses or not…. That is, actually COACH.
correct. You play to your players strengths. Run what ya brung instead of trying to force something that isn’t going to work
The whole “Anderson is unhappy in Madison” story was covered by ESPN on Dec. 4th.
http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=travis-haney&id=3932
It’s kind of awkward…..in my mind the problem was Riley not the facilities. Don’t get me wrong, upgrades were needed. I shudder to think that they weren’t really going to ever do anything about Riley because of his insane contract, maybe Eddie boy is letting the frustration out on that. Maybe he did want to fire Riley, but knew it was not economically feasible. BDC better watch out, he may actually get fired by Ed, he’s on a roll!
Michigan alum and die hard fan sent me a text today congratulating the hire and bummed they couldn’t get somebody like Andersen. Fuck off, Schnell.
got the text while sitting in the short bus (that’s what whiskey calls his CRV) waiting for my oldest son to get out of school. Was told I won the bet (my buddy bet me it would be a retread or up and comer from a lower tier school) and to check out espn.com. I did and my eyes got big. Then I said to myself, no way! Then I did a fist pump. Hand to god. My 8 year old in the car can attest. OSU hired a great coach today. I don’t expect a miracle next season but I don’t think a bowl game is out of the realm of possibility. Let’s see what the new staff can accomplish in spring and fall camps!
So, I’ve heard Bob had already put together a large portion of Riley’s buyout before Mike even left. Considering Andersen’s buyout was $3 million, that’s a big reason we actually were able to swing this deal. For that, I give Bob huge props.
Great timing by Nebraska. Thanks Huskers!
Sounds like BDC did put some pressure on Riley Monday morning, and the Call from Nebraska came Monday afternoon.
“Three sources told me that De Carolis wanted to eliminate multiyear contracts for Beaver assistant coaches — something Riley had fought hard for in recent years — and also wanted to renegotiate Riley’s deal to pare the years remaining down from seven.”
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/243517-111003-mike-riley-gut-wrenching-decision-to-leave-oregon-state-bittersweet-
BIG BALLS BOB
If it weren’t for that Riley contract I’d say overall he’s a good AD. Maybe this hire will help us forget about that and define his legacy more than that contract.
Cough, cough. Errrr Angry… Are you forgetting how bobby was handling the CR situation?
Imo bobby got lucky. If Andersen hadn’t called him I’m figuring we would have ended up with Hoke or worse.
I wonder if my comment from a few days ago was one of his “sources” haha.
I guess I’m a vindictive person, but I wish BDC would had fired Riley’s ass after the 3-9 season.. It feels wrong that Riley somehow “escaped” his deserving fate as a coach Oh well, he’s Nebraska’s problem now.
Pretty good stuff here
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/243519-111006-the-scoop-on-gary-andersen-and-his-hiring-at-oregon-state
Other than Andersen, a very uninspiring list. Andersen must have reached out right away to get this kind of list.
Norm Chow and Osia Lewis!? YGBKM. Surprised we didn’t see Banker’s name. In any event a good hire and glad to see Dr. Ray fired up. No more mediocrity!!!
Some perspective from the other side.
http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/
That is life for you. People want to think that they got to the top through hard work but the fact is there are a lot of people busting their asses and not a lot of people on top. At some point luck is a factor in everyone’s life. It is like idiots that mindlessly argue about the DOW being the benchmark for a presidents success.
Who argues the Dow = success?
Someone really needs to keep an accurate list of all the a-hole media people that have bagged on Corvallis complete with actual quotes and audio/video clips for future reference. Hearing Corvallis getting shredded on Jim Rome today really got under my skin. Calling Reser a glorified high school stadium and how it ain’t no Camp Randall. I’ve been to both stadiums and even Reser’s old side holds its own against CR! The camp has been renovated but its age still shows through horribly with its lack of bathrooms, very narrow exit halls, video boards for fans, and angle of site to the field. How do national media people get away with this kind iif stuff? They’re either making assumptions or re-spewing what they heard elsewhere. Bevergopher, amiright? You’ve been to both stadiums more recently than I.
With this new hire and the continued financial investment in our football program we need to slap these fuckers back in their face in a couple hears when this ship is at full sail, and do it frequently and with good solid information!
I just went after Rome on twitter.
I downloaded his show and listened…he says he’s not going after osu fans, but then he does. The callers were bad, too.
