Irvine liked Wake. Someone here said he’s going to de-commit from the Beavs. We’ll see. He’s also visiting Maryland, so consider him soft. Hopefully the Beavs can keep him. He’s a good looking CB.

Did Noah commit? His twitter implies he did.

Anyone with info on this past weekend? It’s been pretty quiet.

  1. Coaches are heading to SLC for in homes. Sounds like Folau’s spot at Oregon was filled and he’s down to Utes and Beavs, and he lives in SLC. Togiai lives there too, so my guess would be those are tomorrows’s visits.
Also, I was premature when I thought Simmons commited to the Utes. It was one of his Juco teammates the article was talking about. Simmons visits Beavs this coming weekemd amd Utah the following I believe.

    • That’s all good. But then you would need to create RFID portals or gates where we could track them. Then we would need to alter society so that it was just a normal, everyday occurrence when they pass through these gates.

Then John Preston will break away from our new society, remove his RFID, and go after us. And we could have 20 dudes for security, but he would just mow them down and kill us in the end.

      I’m selling.

    • I’m not worried about an Irvine flip. Andrew Nemec said he sent him a text/pic of him wearing Beavs gear and expecting to do great things. that was tonigjt after he returned from the Wake visit.

      • Yeah, I think he’s solid with the Beavs as well. I was asking more as a hypothetical, I guess. Shortly after his OSU visit, I saw a picture of him wearing all Beaver gear at what looked like a high school basketball game. I couldn’t imagine he’d wear that and then go somewhere else.

  2. Definitely concerned about the state of recruiting.

I like some of these 2-stars and think they’re 3-stars, but they can’t win big with an entire class like that. They need some legit players to build a foundation around, and I am seeing all good complimentary players rather than foundations.

  3. Hey turd, where did you expect these recruits to come from? If at the end of the day, they get no one else, then you have a legitimate beef. Why don’t you just come out and say that you are anti Polynesian?

    • I expected Andersen/Woods/Kauha’aha’a to bring 3-4 recruits from Wisconsin and Sitake/Tuiaki to do the same from Utah. It hasn’t happened. Thus we’ve settled for a bunch of two-stars…

  4. The recruiting class has been underwhelming so far. I am not excited about any of these players coming in. But we’ll see what happens this weekend. Let’s see how good the coaches are at closing.

  5. Beavs 71st in RPI after today’s games. Next opponent ASU is 119th. Wed night is a winnable road game. I have no prediction as I said this was one of the swing games. I would not be surprised to see the Beavs win, nor surprised to see them lose. ASU is a better team than Wazzu. Wed/Fri games this week due to the super bowl in Arizona next weekend. Short turnaround. Hope the beavs get some rest.

    • Ken Pomeroy has the beavs at 62nd just ahead of UW (63rd). Allegedly he uses a more detailed analysis of data to come up with his rankings. But I know nothing about that shit so I don’t claim to be an expert

      http://kenpom.com/

      • His methodology is weighted in this way:
        1. Pace
        2. Offensive efficiency
        3. Defensive efficiency

It’s not a bad formula. It’s probably more accurate than most out there. But I was a little pissed when he went behind the pay wall. I understand why he did it. He has a proprietary algorithm. But he should open up his pages to the data that he collects at the very least. I think he would garner a lot more traffic and subscriptions if he did so. I know I lived on that site when it was all free. I’ve looked at it maybe four times since he went pay wall.

  6. Way to help change that narrative guys.

    “This recruiting class stinks.”

    “This class is weak.”

Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah.

We all know a whole variety of folks read this site INCLUDING recruits.

SHUT UP if you’re going to be negative about ALLEGED shortcomings in the YET TO BE DETERMINED recruiting class.

    • The ratings on the class stink. Results on field remain to be seen, and those are what matter. :-D

This understandably causes angst as there is a correlation usually, and it smacks of Riley.

I have no problem with the recruits. Always good to welcome new Beavers, so long as they’re quality people!

    • @Timber That’s the same Bull Shit that went on on the PO blog and the reason I moved over to Angry’s site.

If the recruits decide to decommit because of what some dingle berry posts on some stupid ass blog page OSU probably didn’t want them anyway.

  7. Again, I like some of the 2 stars and stood up for them (yes, some should even be rated higher). I just think they’re complimentary players, and the staff has to get cornerstones. They are failing at that. I don’t see any of these recruits as guys to build an offense or defense around. Now maybe there is synergy and the sum is greater than the parts. That is entirely possible. It would be nice to have some cornerstone athletes, though, in the event that doesn’t happen. Maybe that still happens, but I am getting nervous…

    • Paul Lucas and/or Alston would really help ease concerns. It’s concerning we don’t hear much about either considering Brennan has been on them for months.

      • I’d like Noah, too. He’s a fluid TE and would make losing Snyder a wash.

Barr and the LB from utah (forgetting his name) would help a lot, too.

  8. I still have hope things will turn. I can’t believe these coaches are this bad at recruiting, even on short notice. I think something happens. It just isn’t, so I’m doubting my belief in them.

  9. I think we end up with Decoud. At one point he said we were his leader but he was waiting to visit Baylor, pending a Baylor offer. Today, he cancelled that trip as Baylor still hadnt offered him. It’s likely between the Beavs and Louisville, and with that giant void left by Nelson graduating, he’d be a good fit and play immediately.

  10. Someone needs to compile recruiting info. I was happy just to jettison most of Riley’s class, with nothing in return. That PSAs are moving in unity to come visit OSU is a little weird for me to watch. I’ve seen these January weekends with recruits hanging out here and there. But I’ve never seen the seemingly favorable circumstances of reality overtake all of OSU athletics and just slap me in the face like they are doing right now.

Who have we lost? Who have we gained? Was this Snyder kid really all world? Even if he was, wouldn’t he just fall down when someone blew on him… if he didn’t jump early?

  11. Well, here’s a thought… maybe GA sees enough offensive talent on the roster that he doesn’t need to panic about filling the roster with guys who might play next year?

Realistically, If Baldwin can scheme to the current roster with Storm and Villamin & co and one of the decent QBs that won’t trip over his own feet and go standing fetal I like the chances of a pretty effective offense. They’ll at least have the benefit of nobody having film on them til they play somebody good. Sneak attack factor?

    • Really good concept, doesnt make sense to frantically recruit the dregs of this years class at the last minute, save the ships for next year’s full season of recruiting and use the talent currently onboard and then cherry pick the underated players at the needed positions.

  12. Had been awhile since I’d heard anything about Chris Barr. Decommitted from Utah today. South Florida is really high on him, as well as Wisconsin. Thought I had read rumors in here that he was either related, or good friends with Taylor Thomas? Or was it Irvine? or both? Either way, he doesn’t have an OSU offer yet, but wonder if that is only a matter of time.

  13. I think (and hope) a quick scan at the 2016 offer list is more telling of this Staff’s recruiting goals..

    They are lofty.

    5 stars: 4
    4 stars: 28
    3 stars: 12

Riley’s initial offer list seemed to slant more heavily on the 3 star dudes and there was always a sprinkle of the 2 star and unrated guys from the get go.. The potential fall of from an offer list that starts this high should on its own merit warrant better classes.

    • Maybe this is where the angst comes from.

It might be all downhill from here.

Now I know what it feels like to be a Cal fan… well… without the downhill actually occurring yet.

  14. Steve Gress GT ?@stevegress19 9m9 minutes ago

Gary Payton II was named the men’s Pac-12 player of the week so Oregon State had both POWs this week. #gtsports #gobeavs

  15. Interesting, I said Tuli Wily-Matagi was clearly a 3-star, and Rivals bumped him today (sorry if this is old news, haven’t read through the posts yet).

I think K. Davis gets a bump to 3, too.

  16. OT- Basketball recruiting/ fireAlford.com

Does anyone here follow basketball recruiting? If so, which sites do you like best? Thanks!

Also, i cant help but laugh at the UCLA fan site firealford. com. I remember feeling that much opposed to the direction of a program being led by a coach you don’t like.

I was wondering if we are turning any heads in recruiting on the court? Beyond the “big 3” we have arriving next seaon, are we in on any other prospects?

Teams like UCLA stockpile 4 & 5 star kids, maybe we can begin to flip those players? I’d like even one or two of those caliber talents with our current coaching.

Also, can anyone explain exactly what the hell Craig Robinson and his staff were actually doing? Even with the best players from last year gone, WT has done more with 6.75 players (Robbins=.5 walkons =. 25) than Robinson’s best and deepest teams.

It’s both pathetic and vomit inducing, but encouraging imagining this system with 10 healthy hand picked D1 talents on the roster.

    Go Braves!

    • Those unrealistic pricks in Westwood never liked the Alford hire to begin with. The only thing they’d be happy with is the 2nd coming of John Wooden and that isn’t happening. If you recall, Alford left Iowa for New Mexico because he couldn’t handle the unrealistic expectations. At fucking Iowa! He might be able to recruit and stockpile 4 and 5 star talent at UCLA but he sure as shit cannot coach it. Also as a sidenote, who did Alford replace at UNM? The just fired Ritchie McKay. From his “dream job”

    • Tinkle is doing rather well with players who weren’t hand-picked by him. I think it is a disservice to the present players to infer that they have no talent – clearly, they have some. I’ll be interested to see how WT meshes next year’s recruits with the players from the present team.

      • Same issue that CR faced after his first year. How to fit better talent into an overachieving team. Hopefully Tinkle due to his longer background as a coach can make that transition better. Do they keep the defensive focus? Higher rated recruits tend to want to score. That eventually brought CR down, bringing in too many guys who wanted to shoot and not play defense.

        • Not even close.

Except for Claitt, Shon and Omari there was zero talent on that team. You can go ahead and write them up as a bunch of walk-ons beyond those three. And don’t try to pretend Roe was D1 material. Olaf always was and is better. And that SG we had who I conveniently forget… he sucked and was a poison.

  17. Yea.. this team’s top 6 is still probably the most talent he has had… Hence the results.

    The Martin Breuning kid (who couldn’t get on the floor at UW) was probably Tinkles highest rated dude at Montana. For some perspective Tinkles best team at Montana lost to Syracuse in the first round of the 2013 tourny by nearly 50 points.. I mean even the CR led Beavs could have kept it within 30;

    http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=330800183

  18. Hahahahahaa… Gotta love em! I know its silly to look ahead given how fun this team is to watch but…………

Next years team should be a force if they can stay healthy: Wayne is going to have a tough decision on his hands in terms of who to start..

    Option 1: Best lineup IMO

    Bruce – PG
    GP – SG
    Tres – SF
    Olaf – PF
    Gomis – C

    Option 2: Youth Movement

    PG: Bruce
    G: Payton
    G: Thompson
    F: Tinkle
    C: Gomis

    Option 3: (Loyalty)

    PG: Duvivier
    SG: Payton
    SF: Walker
    PF: Olaf
    C: Gomis

Tinkle seems like the type to roll with option 3 and make the younger guys prove their worth

    • I expect him to work the young guys in slowly, and if one takes off he goes with the hot hand. That’s what smart coaches do. Unless the young guys are clearly superior.

    • Gomis has been improving quite a bit. Anyone else notice that? He’s finished more and has some moves. Rebounding has been good, but he needs to work on securing the ball better. Duvivier has done pretty well at 3s lately, but he continues blow layups once he drives…it’s a shame because he’s good at driving, just can’t finish. Out of all this year’s starters I think he’s most at risk to lose his job.

      • I’ve noticed the same about Duvivier… and the same about LMW driving and giving up charges… even though I disagree with 90% of those calls… and would be proven correct if there was review available for those plays… as there is with my DVR thingy.

It was a common occurrence for Cunningham as well. Maybe it was just a matter of stupid refs giving respect only after they had seen a kid play more than four times. Then again, maybe it’s a matter of kids learning to play despite stupid refs.

        Chicken/egg?

        • What I will say that is noticeable… our boys do not take time after each call to care about wh the foul was called on. There was one time against UW where GP2 got called for a foul when nobody was within ten feet of him. And there’s Jarmal and Daniel. Other than that, we do not whine and complain about calls beyond the initial disappointment… if that’s even a factor. These are big time deposits in the bank of “that ref is calling it that way.”

When I watched OSU football the last couple years, I saw players whining about calls and getting on each other for the same. I did not see coaches giving a shit other than the obligatory rolling of eyes. I feel that might be a problem. Stats may prove me wrong.

The worst one was a couple years ago against ASU (I think) when Romaine ran to the pile and was jacked from behind into it… garnering a PF penalty… absolutely undeserved.

Then he came to the sidelines and got browbeat by Remmers. That was just a shit move by Remmers. I don’t care if your K launched into a pile late and really deserved a penalty. I would think you would be high-fiving that K. But Remmers decided he would be a shitty teammate (loosely termed) and beat on a K.

          Fat fuck!

    • Malcolm is going to make it so hard to sit him, and I can’t see Langston coming the bench either…then again I can, since Quinn Cook at Duke was able to relinquish his spot to Tyus Jones.

I think Tinkle builds up to option 1 somewhat, and thank goodness we have a lot of (good but not outstanding) players going so it frees things up. That way, not too many guys transfer because there’s no playing time; take your freshman year you’d be on the bench anyway and contribute and do great things. But overall I think Olaf being a true stretch 4 makes our lineup so deadly.

I really wonder who WON’T get playing time with any of those options. With option 1, there’s Duvivier, LMW, Eubanks, Thompson, Robbins, Reid, Gligs, and N’Diaye on the bench. Like who comes in with the second unit? Would the team have two good platoons? Three of those guys don’t play, and the list of guys who “don’t play” would be only Eubanks, Reid, N’Diaye, Gligs (so our bigs). So it’s essentially a game of who you want to play.

    • do keep a couple things in mind……………

      1. When the big three were here they engaged in some games against current players and won their fair share of them

      2. The current group has another off season ahead of them. They can and will get better.

WT will go with his best options. It will be nice to have a deeper bench though and I’m sure the coaches feel the same

  19. The Beavs recruiting Twitter keeps retweeting insider website links, and they’re useless to me. You guys should also tweet the actual info. Thanks.

  20. The entire team said there is a night and day difference between Coach Andersen and Coach Riley. The crazy thing is they all really like Coach Riley, but they just said Coach Andersen is much better.

    lol

  21. ELu Aydon flip from Wisconsin DT here is his Scouting report

    Size-Strength-Speed
Big man with excellent size for play in the defensive trenches. A thickly built wide-body with very good height and playing strength. Flashes adequate first-step quickness.

    Versus the Run
This can be a stout interior presence against the run. When he comes off the ball with good pad level he can be extremely tough to move off the ball with one blocker and flashes the ability fight and at times split double teams. Pad level though is an area that needs be improved as he can quickly pop up and play tall and when doesn’t win the leverage battle he can give ground. Shows flashes, but needs to improve hand usage as he is too infrequent in shooting them and can get tied up with blockers. Does display good lateral mobility for size to be active between the tackles.

    Pass Rush Skills
Big, strong player capable of pushing a blocker back and pressing the pocket when he keeps his pads down. Needs to be more active with his weapons in helping him to try and clear from blockers.

    Toughness/Motor
Can be a physical player that will take an opportunity to deliver a pop. Looks to give good effort to stay with plays and work to get around the ball and with improved technique can continue to get stronger in each area.

    Bottom Line
Aydon is a big body with the tools to be a tough, physical and productive presence in the trenches. Big and strong enough to contribute early, a need to further improve technique as well as adjust to greater competition could make a red-shirt not only greatly beneficial but also needed. With more consistent technique can develop into a productive contributor to a D-Line even if just as a run defender.

    • Must win game for the Beavers. Gonna be very close but I think the Beavs win that one. ASU is gonna struggle all game to score, much like the last time the Beavers played them

    • That sucks. He’s n unlikely bright spot for a shit coach.

Oh… did I mention that Sendek is a shit coach?

Anyway… Justice is a good player. I hope he heals well… and transfers to a team with a not-ass-hat for a coach.

      • I don’t think Sendek is a bad coach. I mean, he’s ok. I see ASU try to adapt to what they have for talent. Last year they had way better talent with Jahii Carson and Jordan Bachynski. They did win 21 games and make the NCAA tourney. This year they have less scoring options and much like the Beavs try to milk the shot clock and keep scores low and play defense. Problem is they turn the ball over way too much. I don’t think he’s a great coach but he’s certainly better than several others in the Pac-12. Romar and Kent are awful. Two peas in a pod. Both can recruit, but neither can coach or X and O worth two shits. I can’t believe Romar hasn’t been fired in the last few years.

          • Kent is not good. At all. Relies too much on offense. Like I said, great recruiter, but terrible in game X’s and O’s guy. The two Luke’s days in Eugene were his best and are way behind him. That team could run and shoot lights out. But they couldn’t play defense. That will only get you so far

          • Agreed on D, but Kent does have an eye for talent and an ability to recruit it.

Don’t kid yourself about Sendek. He was lucky enough to be able to get a Prop 48 player who lived a couple miles away in Carson. Other than that, he’s run more kids off his team than he’s actually brought in, or so it seems. We’ll wait until after this season and their annual exodus before we can scratch our heads and wonder how that dude who is worse than Craig Robinson at everything still has a major conference job.

  22. Sorry for the off topic comment, but did anyone see Brandon Browner’s (OSU Alum) comments about intentionally trying to hurt Seattle players?

    smh…

    • if it wasn’t for Richard Sherman, I wouldn’t hate the seahawks. Hard to believe that douche has a communications degree from Stanford.

        • They aren’t being “shoved down your throat”

They are the most popular team in most regions of Oregon so they are shown on local TV. Get over it.

What do you expect networks to do? Show the teams less people want to see?

          • You are right, they are showing the Seahawks because the games don’t get better ratings.

I can remember when I was a kid and Portland’s local station would actually let fans pick the game (they provided a phone number and you called and voted)….Guess who was on every single Sunday?

Hint: The team was based in Seattle.

And this was the early 90’s when the Seahawks sucked….But keep telling yourself the Seahawks are being forced on Oregon. Its a good story.

          • Seattle is not local. It just happens to be the “closest” team so people adopt them as local. Every regular season NFL weekend in Oregon it’s seahawks, then one of these three, 49ers, raiders or chargers. I want to watch the good games. Newsflash, the raiders and 49ers both sucked this year. I’d rather watch a game that doesn’t involve my favorite team beating up on an inferior opponent to two good teams playing each other in a close game. As for a local team? Hint: We don’t have one. So now that Seattle doesn’t have an NBA team you think they’ve adopted the Blazers now as the “local team”?

    • I dont think it is out of line, I heard it quite a bit from the sports talk radio guys complaining that Green Bay didnt take advantage of what looked like and injured Sherman.

  23. another thought. It would be pretty kick ass if this beaver team could find a way to finish 4th in the conference and AVOID an opening round game in the conference tourney. Having to play 4 games in 4 days is more brutal for a team with a short bench than 3 games in 3 days. I know, I’m thinking too far ahead

        • I think WT and staff will keep this team pretty grounded no matter what we think or say here at angrybeavs. So no worries. This season has already exceeded almost everyone’s expectations. The ride isn’t over yet

          • The funniest part is reading and listening to the “experts” about our D. It’s a 2-3. No, it’s a 3-2. Against USC the announcer was amazed out how we went from a 2-3 to a 3-2 in the middle of a possession as if we called it out in certain conditions and depending on where the ball is.

It’s called the Ameoba people. Tinks ran it at Montana too. The problem against USC was that they went small. It took us halfway through the second half to go man up on them and start taking the ball away.

  25. Baseball starts in a little over two weeks. Roster is out now. Not much changes. A couple freshman didn’t make it back, Dan James, Mason Fishback and Chandler Eden. None had much PT last year. Eden was the only one that was expected to make an impact this year. Other guys not making it back, Painton, Belding, and Esposito. Englebreckt is out with injury this year.

It’s a very young team and will need the sophomores to really lead this team. Based on Casey’s comments and last year’s stats, here’s what I think the lineup might be.

    C – Ice
    1B – Clark
    2B – Donahue
    3B – Hamiliton
    SS – Morrison
    OF – Hendrix
    OF – Cary
    OF – Gillette
    DH – Harrison

    Fri – Moore
    Sat – Thompson
Sun – Heimlich (due to him being a lefty)
    Weekday – Tweedt

    Bullpen – Everyone else.

    • Howard is likely in the OF. Apparently he has healed ahead of schedule. And I would think Mak is in the running for being in the rotation.

  26. For how close we are to signing day, and how many spots the Beavs have left to fill, it sure is quiet out there. It just doesn’t feel like they’re going to sign anywhere near 20-25 players this year, unless they go with several “plan b” types. It seems like the staff is putting more time/effort towards next year and beyond.

Here are the current 14 verbals according to Rivals(but Jiminez shouldn’t be on this list so make that 13)

    Elu Aydon
    Blake Brandel
    Keivonnis Davis
    Miki Fifita
    Omar Hicks-Onu
    Jay Irvine
    Jacob Jimenez
    Zachary Lopini Katoa
    Zach Lucas
    Jalen Rakim Moore
    Nick Porebski
    Taylor Thomas
    Shawn Wilson
    Tuli Wily-Matagi

    • If recruiting is the life-blood of a program, and recruits who are better or more sought wait until signing day to commit and sign, this might be our reality from here on out. With the shortened period for recruiting due to the timing of it all, the numbers will be down a little. But expect to be sitting at about 20 with most of the kids being the workaday types. And expect to have irons in several fires for the highly rated/targeted PSAs… winning some and losing most.

    • as far as I know, you’re limited to 85 total scholarships at any given time, and a max of 25 per year. Not sure if there is a yearly minimum, but would be foolish to sign less than 10 in a single year because you wouldn’t be able to catch up to 85 again for several years.

    • The rules have changed slightly. We can only take 25 in any calendar year. Winter term counts as the year previous, so Liuchan and Crawford would be 2014… as would Collins… I think. But if we were already at 25 for 2014, they would count against 2015. That rule is for the Juco signing period in December mostly, but it also applies to early HS graduates and grey shirts.
