Home Basketball Oregon State @ Arizona State

Oregon State @ Arizona State

Wednesday, 5pm on Pac-12 network.

I don’t care for all this talk about the NCAA tournament or automatic NIT bid. Hopefully tinkle is doing a good job of blocking out all that noise.

ASU isn’t a great team, but road wins are always tough. With all the chatter about NCAA/NIT combined with a road game and @Arizona looming, Beavs are setup perfectly to be looking ahead and drop this game. I’m expecting a loss.

  1. Not sure how much he played for ASU, but Whiskey mentioned they lost their freshman PG for the season. Hoping that throws their rotation off this week and OSU squeaks out a win. Go Beavs

  2. Tinkle has a lot of experience managing expectations. His Montana teams only got a bid if they won the conference tournament. Hard to see this team looking ahead of any teams with the low margin of error they have in each game. I expect a split. Beat ASU but lose to Arizona.

Good defense beats ASU every time. ASU will only win if they can hit a lot of threes or get OSU into foul trouble early.

Arizona will be looking for revenge and on their home court, where they are unbeaten. Can’t see any scenario where OSU pulls one out.

    • not to mention the +3 home court advantage factor the Cats always seem to get where they shoot way more FT’s than their opponent, are allowed to basically mug anyone that takes the ball to the rim and ticky tack, touch fouls are called on the opponent.

  3. On today’s episode of Cornhusker Comedy Corner:

    http://forum.huskermax.com/vbbs/showthread.php?71303-More-good-news-for-Rileyshouldntofbeenhireders

Husker fans contort their brains – and logic itself – in an attempt to talk themselves into believing Biley is a home-run hire!

“Belichick’s coaching record at Cleveland, was 37-45 with one playoff win! He was FIRED and with justification but he didn’t have the resources he eventually wound up with at New England. Anyone want to argue he hasn’t been pretty successful at New England? Based on his Cleveland record you’d say NE was hiring a failed coach? Pete Carroll was barely a .500 coach BEFORE hired by USC! Looks like he’s done pretty well since then?”

This is what I call the “exception as the rule” fallacy. Going by Husker logic, someone should snatch Craig Robinson for their basketball team ASAP! After all, his failure at Oregon State indicates he will be a huge success at another program! Also, are you thinking about dropping out of college? Do it! Bill Gates did it and look where he is now! Woo hoo!

Also on today’s episode, the Lincoln media gets their darling, and the fans know it:

    http://forum.huskermax.com/vbbs/showthread.php?71264-Who-s-more-excited-about-the-new-staff

“Who’s more excited about the new staff? Husker fans or Nebraska Sportswriters and reporters?”

    He is indeed the Anti-Pelini!

Pelini: raving swearing lunatic…….. Riley: might let a “gee, that’s not a neat deal” rip if you lit his bike on fire while he rides it

Pelini: says what’s on his mind…….. Riley: full of docile coachspeak (at least I hope that’s not truly what’s on his mind, but now that I think about it…)

Pelini: 9+ wins per year……… Riley: LOL

But the media will love him and he’s a nice guy… so good luck getting rid of Rile E. when he chokes the big one away! (and the little ones too)

      • The difference is that Belicheck and Carroll were both in their first job (Carroll didn’t really get a chance to fail with the Jets) and were relatively young when they failed. Those could be deemed learning experiences. Riley has had many jobs and has a clearly established record.

I do think its possible Riley busts through his 4 loss ceiling given the weakness of Nebraska’s division but I’d be shocked if he wins a conference title. Its just not who he is.

      • I got a chuckle out of one husker fans comment yesterday, showing this logic. I think I was at cornnation.com. He was saying about Harbaugh’s swipe of one of the recruits, that since Riley is such a good evaluator or talent, he was just monitoring who Riley takes interest in and goes in for the steal.

      • It’s more cost effective to charter. Leave the ownership to a fleet service, and they can maintain and hangar their birds as any larger operation would do, bulk discounts, service discounts, depreciation write-offs, etc.

If we were a business with those tax write-offs, we might fly enough hours to justify ownership. But it’s my understanding that the costs are much less up front, especially for a contract which stays nowhere for more than a couple hours and returns home in the end.

    • Need at least 300 hours annually to cover the fixed costs with the lower marginal costs. 500 is better. And thats for one airplane at a time. Sending multiple out in different directions, i think charter is the way to go here.

  4. Sheldrick Redwine decommitted from Louisville. Anyone know who he recently visited and if our coaching staff is still on him? Electric Eye? Bueller? Bueller?

  5. I recently learned more about OSU’s club sports – I thought they were like intramurals – but no. The teams wear OSU uniforms – rugby, for instance (women’s rugby – who knew??), compete with other schools and travel afar representing OSU. Lacrosse, too, to name a couple.

I realize that’s nothing new to you alums – but I intend to put it on my list of things to go to when I’m next in Corvallis. I think it’s y’know -neat.

  6. It’s kind of interesting that the Portland Tribune hasn’t given the Beavs success story one word (that I could find) so far this season. Seems like Eggers covered CR quite a bit. I guess he hasn’t developed any relationship with WT so far? I like Eggers attention to detail.

      • Would be nice to add Folau to that list too. Hopefully all of those guys sign, but we could see half of our class take off on missions and then never come back. This Utah pipeline seems like a risky route.

Saw that Folau and Simmons are slated to visit this weekend, and Hunt is there today. Know of any other final visitors for this weekend?

        • Is Folau a mission guy? I actually like OSU’s chances with him.

Only other guy I’d heard of visiting was Deltron Sands. If the staff doesn’t bring in more than 4-5, then they must feel pretty comfortable and/or confident with the recruits who have already visited.

      • Those two years are a crapshoot too. Some end up fat, some end up skinny, how many actually end up better athletes after two years away?

  7. Don’t know about going on mission. A couple years back there was and extended discussion (on another message board) about guys coming back from mission way out of shape and at least some of them had lost the fire required to be good at football.

The other thing I’m concerned about is the “D” needs help now, not 2 years from now.

    • So one Riley guy ends up at Western Kentucky (Faaiu), another at New Mexico (Hott) and another at Hawaii (Matautia). Not exactly steps up. Thought Riley was an excellent talent evaluator? Surprised no other Pac-12 teams tried to snag these guys.

        • I looked at his film and wasn’t impressed at all. Pretty sure he was a project OL for Riley & Co. 2* sounds about right. Also, GA was trying to minimize the OL we have on scholarships.

      • I thought Tavita Faaiu was GA’s first commit. Not a Riley guy.

Also seems obvious Riley recruited the guys he thought had talent from his OSU class to Nebraska. The other guys were his “low hanging fruit” type guys.

  8. EWU’s Vernon Adams is visiting Oregon this week. Their QB situation must not be very good next year if they’re bringing in a 1 year guy to plug the hole.

  9. Deltron Sands is visiting this weekend. Funny, I talked about this guy about a month ago when he was first getting contact form Telly Lockette. Small but speedy 2* running back with some decent offers. Doesn’t seem like a position of need with Thomas Taylor essentially being the same player. The big positive though is he plays for a powerhouse in the state of Florida, St Thomas Aquina. Lots of talent at that school so would be good to have connections there for future classes.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/maryland/football/recruiting/player-Deltron-Sands-155536

  10. One of the things I noticed about the guys coming in next year is that they have had a lot of team success in high school. Tinkle, Thompson, and Bruce have led their teams to state tournaments. With Thompson winning it all last year. Tinkle lost in the finals.

That’s something the Rueck brought in with his recruits. Not only good players but they played on good teams in HS. Makes me less worried about egos since these guys know what it takes to win titles and that’s team play.

    • Mattison probably told him they would have to gain an academic board waiver for the kid since his numbers across the board wouldn’t get him into school. Too bad he had to freak out about that. But the coach has to be honest this close to signing day. What if it took two weeks for their regents to NOT clear the kid, NSD passes and all the slots for schools he would have gone to are filled?

  11. Something I found interesting about the Faaiu situation. I read an article shortly after he committed to OSU about his wanting to stay out west and in the PAC-12. Either he wasn’t going to have the grades to get in, or something else happened. Because WKU isn’t “out west” or in the PAC-12.

I think the OSU coaches are clearing space where they need to get kids they like better into the 2015 class. Jimenez was not only a commit, but a fan of just about everything of the school. In the last two weeks Jimenez, a non-LDS kid btw, just happens to develop an overwhelming urge to attend BYU? Doubtful.

  12. Paul Lucas, looking to pay someone to help him with an online class. Not a good sign. (the icons that don’t show up here are of little stacks of money with wings)

Looking for someone to help me with an online class ????????

  13. I hate those stupid “I Love Logistics” commercials from UPS. If signing up for a shipping company is the “Gunderman Groups” major decision, then they are in a shitload of trouble.

      • In the real world companies use all of the different shippers depending on their needs and this idiot comes to the meeting like she’s discovered a life changing business decision.

        • Except for freight. UPS and FedEx pricing on variable shipping schedules absolutely suck. If you have room to park one of their trailers, consistent outflow and static pick-up schedules… they come close, and are better than term to term shippers at getting product to the end user… if it’s small freight.

Question: Back in 2007 and 2008 when shippers tacked on a fuel surcharge, we accepted it and the subsequent price adjustments afterward. Now that fuel is low, shouldn’t we be getting a rebate followed by a downward adjustment?

  14. ASU is going to regress to the mean, but they’ll win this game if LMW doesn’t give the Beavers anything. He’s been invisible the last couple games. Payton looks really good offensively tonight and Duvivier is playing okay. That’s it

    • I doubt Montgomery hates either team. He’s just stating the obvious. All he really said was the Beavers don’t really have any 1 on 1 guys which is true

    • It’s tough to watch, but if this form holds it will be the first blow out defeat in 20 games. I don’t think any of us expected that from this team.

  15. Beavblazer (or anybody)- can you do me a favor and find Sleeper Athletes on twitter, and send them a tweet that says something like…”Where is Adrienne Talan committed?” I should just start an account, but if you could do that it would be appreciated. Thanks.

  16. Oregon State is not a very good road team yet. Tinkle & Crew need to better overcome this and get the team playing with more confidence on the road. Team will have a very tough time making the NCAA now and have to keep winning at home for NIT. Defense dipping some this game is what needs to turn around first.

  17. you know it’s not your night when an ASU player passes up an open 3, drives to the basket, travels, takes a piss poor shot with 2 seconds on the shot clock and the refs bail him out by calling a foul on OSU

  18. I’m disappointed because good defense should be a constant. They hung in there on the road against UW and defeated Wazzu. This was over after 8 minutes, but it’s going to happen.

Look at what the Beavs did to DePaul at home. That’s just not going to happen if the Beavs are playing in Chicago. Like many have said, there are few good road teams in college hoops.

  19. I know that I am not very smart. But how could guys get so far ahead of the story to plan final four tickets and such with all the dang NCAA and NIT talk? Everyone wants to be first. Hence twitter. Do we assume that other teams never learn or get better? Do we just assume the other guys act like the Washington Generals and fall for the same tricks every night? The season was always going to have ups and downs. Take it one day at a time. Get up off the canvas. It is still better than it should have been. And quit freakin projecting! Shouda couda wouda.

    • no one said book tickets to the final four. It’s one game. Anyone with a brain knew it was going to happen at some point when the margin for error is as small as it is with these guys. Still plenty of winnable games on the schedule ahead. No one said they’re going to win them all. Sleep it off, forget about this one and get ready for Arizona on Friday night boys

  20. The problem is the win at WSU suddenly made everyone think this team was going to win on the road. I’ve been saying it since the beginning of the Pac-12 slate, this team shouldn’t win on the road and any time it does is an outlier.

  21. Kinda surprised. Maybe too early for expectations, but I thought we were past shellackings like tonight. I felt like we’ve been overachieving due to the better coaching but getting boat-raced by a lower tier also ran like ASU shows we still have some holes to fill.

Oh well, still got plenty of chances for wins this year starting with AZ!

    • I don’t think ASU is an also ran. They are coming off a 21 win season, finished 3rd last year and made the NCAA tournament. They are a middle of the road team this season. Good at home, mediocre on the road. They are better than their 3-5 conference record. 3 of their 5 losses are to the 3 best teams in the conference. Arizona, Utah and Stanford.

  22. Expected some games like this. Teams are comfortable at home, they have their fans going, and ASU was hungry and firing on all cylinders. Am I disappointed? Sure, but not really sad. There’s plenty of chances for this team to win some more games. We need depth and consistency. Didn’t have either tonight.

Just keep playing men. Keep playing and keep improving. I still believe in this team.

    • I don’t think anyone is bailing on the team or what a good season it has been so far.

It’s always tough to win on the road. It’s why I penciled this as a loss, and probably why Vegas had the Beavs +7. Every game is different. AZ went to OSU and got beaten…winning on the road is hard. They will lose to Arizona and be 14-7 heading into an important final stretch. Good news is Robbins will be right around the corner once they return home.

      • Robbins is eligible to return for the Utah game. 5 more games without him. @ Zona, WSU and UW, then at USC and UCLA. I would imagine the Beavs will be favored in both home games and they are both very winnable.

      • You are more optimistic than I am. I think the short rotation is wearing, opposing coaches and teams are paying more attention and I see only a win against Cal. I haven’t liked the early season hype – except agree that GP2 is a terrific player and Olaf has improved.

I only hope wbb continues on its merry way – Stanford game will be interesting.

        • I think they have realistic chance of finishing out 4-6, maybe 3-7 and end up on the NIT bubble. I don’t think they beat Utah at home, but they could get Cal on the road. UW at home is not a given because I’m not sure they can take full advantage of the Huskies not having Upshaw unless Jarmal steps up and has a big game. I’m hoping for more, but looking at wins being Wazzu, UW, Cal and Oregon.

  23. When you get essentially nothing from Olaf, Morris-Walker, and Gomis, this is the expected result. Mostly though, I was very disappointed with the defense. Left ASU players wide open most of the game.

        • It does highlight the necessity of having a post up big man who is a real and consistent threat to score. I saw a couple plays tonight where Gomis had nice inside position and Payton just ignored him.

Gomis may end up as a limited minutes banger next year if the Euro Freshmen is skilled enough to compete in the P-12. Jarmal is nice option in the post also, but he does not have Gomis length on the defensive end. Maybe you do offense/defense with Gomis and Jarmal with 10 fouls between the two of them next year. Tinkle should have a lot of options next season.

    • The home team is rested, their fans are egging them on, egging on the referees to make calls that slight their own teams’ way, and when you have 6-10000 people reinforcing your behavior negatively, that affects your game. When you’re at home, that group of 10000 is positively reinforcing you. Plus your body is in its normal routine so performing on game day is a bit easier.

      • And this is the part that bothers me: “egging on the referees to make calls that slight their own teams’ way”

Why does everyone just accept homer reffing?

  24. Arizona just forcefully bent the ducks over and gave them tip, shaft and balls. 90-56 final. I have a bad feeling Friday night is not going to be good for the beavs

  25. I kind of look at it this way….if Tinkle can just get 4 more conference wins out of the schedule, he will have achieved something CR could not do in six seasons….a .500 record in league play.

  26. “Asiago, …….stop.”

  27. Though we’re collectively being terrorized by the commercials on the Pac-12 network, none ofthem have pissed me off so badly as the WatchESPN commercial for the Amazon Firephone. It’s the Wolverine mother fuckers!

    • Wtf?

Isn’t that sign, or a variation thereof, posted in every locker room everywhere? We’re the previous coaches’ expectations so low they couldn’t set these basic goals?

      • Agreed, the way that’s couched is very strange. I get that we’re dealing with mostly dumb teenagers here, but I feel like you start the conversation from a negative position when half your core values are: 1) Don’t do illegal shit, 2) Be nice to women. Specifying those as core value implies that not breaking the law and and not beating up women isn’t the default state of affairs but rather are things to aspire to. The top four values there might as well be summarized up to one big overarching one: Don’t be a scumbag.

          • Fair enough, and I do see the difference. It still just feels like the expectation should be to go above and beyond the call of duty. To be more respectful than the average person. To be more conscious of one’s actions than might otherwise be the case. Even for expectations, as opposed to aspirations, the bar is being set pretty damn low there with values 2, 3, and 4.

          • If those are the bar we’re shooting for around here, lets add a few more to the list:

            No murdering.
            No assaulting.
            No evading taxes.
            No bribing.
            Call your gramma often.

Are these really what the program’s core values should be? Anyone that needs to be actively reminded not to steal shit doesn’t belong at OSU in the first place.

      • Remember that most people in college football are religious. That brings with it a patriarchal attitude. And even those who post things like this in order to combat that ingrained thought, are responding to, and usually coming from within, that culture

  28. This recruiting cycle continues to blow. Even the “surprise” recruit they were talking about on blitz (but wouldn’t reveal to subscribers until after signing day) has turned out to be an afterthought who is likely not going to flip. The only silver lining with this class now is Paul Lucas is supposedly 50/50 between us and ASU. Yay? Sounds like more wishful thinking.
The best player in this class (Fifita) is a Riley guy. I’m completely underwhelmed, especially with the lack of any news this week, other than a mission guy who will probably never bother coming to campus.

    • Don’t get so down. Blitz is way behind on this class. There are four or five kids nobody knows about ready to send in NLIs or leaning our way. And a couple will surprise us.

      • And… the recruiting cycle blew chunks before Riley up and made loyalty his primary lie. We had a couple kids who were good. We had a bunch of kids who were not. We had a sub-standard coach with a garbage staff convincing lazy people that losing was just fine.

  29. Of the remaining targets, really only Folau looks promising. But that’s really it. Unless they are still in the hunt for Alston.

    Deltron Sands, 5’8″, 178 and only a 4.77 time?
    Markell Simmons – JC guy.
Mufi Hunt – Is he really going to play bball too?

  30. Folau looks promising, but he’ll go on a mission so you won’t see him.

Simmons is interesting too, but I can’t get too excited about a JC guy unless I think the rest of the team is already solid and he’s just filling in for a weakness. Before you know it, he would be gone.

Sands, doesn’t even have an offer yet. Has said he’ll commit if offered, but you’d think they would have offered him BEFORE coming to Corvallis if he was a top target. Seems like a Plan B or C guy.

Hunt- hadn’t heard he wanted to play bball. That 2015 bball class would be huge if he and Togiai both walked on. Half the team would be freshman next year.

    • Looking at a few websites, I have no idea who is really committed anymore. I don’t feel the least bit of excitement over this recruiting cycle. Maybe I expected too much. I thought Andersen would be able to flip a top guy or two from Wisconsin. It’s been 1 guy and I think that’s going to be it. He said he’d pursue all the ones he thought were relationship based. So I guess the rest were really committed to the school and not him.

      • Just saw a tweet from Kievonnis Davis saying he’s taking an official visit to Florida this weekend? Is this new, or was it already scheduled? I don’t like that sounds of that considering he’s from the state, and Florida is scrambling to put together a class, just like the Beavs. I’m afraid we’re going to lose him.

        • Doesn’t currently hold an offer from Florida. Not feeling good about this one. Saw him a few days ago talking about how he really likes Corvallis, but his girlfriend wants him to play somewhere in florida.

          • Why would Florida want a 2-star?!

If they offer he’ll probably accept. Then get buried on the depth chart and never play a game there.

          • Florida’s class is currently ranked lower than even the Beavs on Rivals. Only 10 guys all 3* and lower. Fucking Florida pipeline already cracking. Figures, why would guys want to play across the country in a town they’ve never heard of when there are plenty of in-state options?

          • I don’t know… there’s Florida, FSU, Miami and a bunch of smaller schools…if the choice were one of the former, maybe the same goes there over OSU, if its a choice of one of the latter or OSU (or any PAC school frankly) it should also be easy.
