  1. They’ll get hosed by the refs, lose composure and then the game. It’s no knock on them but it will be what happens because P12 incompetence in officiating. 72-57 UCLA.

(Please Beaver in the Sky let me be wrong)

  2. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but 72? we’ve only given up that many points one in conference and that was to a red-hot ASU team that was raining threes. UCLA only shoots 34% behind the arc, no way they get to 72 tonight.

  3. The Bruins have Parker back. He was out when they played at Gill. Since his return they have played much better. This is one that I think the Beavs lose.

  4. Initially it was that they would hardly win any games. Now the dialogue by many of the TV guys is that the Beavs are a talentless team who can’t win on the road. It would be nice to see the team force that change in the discussion with a road win.

    • That’s up to them. It’s all in their heads. The “no talent” comes from a team who is comfortable putting the ball in the hoop at home because the visuals and sounds are comfortable. When you get into a different arena, the backdrop changes colors, lighting and depth. The sounds travel differently. It’s more a matter of muscle memory and confidence in that than it is keying off landmark visuals and sounds. If they know while they’re standing on the arc or at the FT line that the hoop is the same size and same distance from floor marks, then replication of their shot needs to be trusted enough to comfortably put the ball in the hoop.

That’s why I say it’s more a matter of experience than it is talent. These guys have all had previous minutes, some as starters and high minutes. But except for GP2 all our kids are the equivalent of sophomores with no upper class leadership. Even without the incoming class, this same group will be much better on the road next year. That bodes well for the incoming class because they will have these guys as their upper class experience and leadership to take them on the road and help them prepare for each and every venue, coaching style, player scouting, etc.

  5. let’s check that line again…almost made run out and fund my account for a UCLA wager @ 1.5

My book has Bruins at 9 and 120.5…sounds like a no wager.

  6. OT… I’m sure there will be a thread about this tomorrow… but baseball starts in two days.

Has anyone heard anything about how the incoming class is performing in practices? There is an obscene amount of talent coming in this year.

    • Casey has mentioned that he’s going to have to depend on them. 2 starting pitchers will be freshman because Thompson is out with an injury. I’m guessing at least 3 starters in the field will be freshman too.

  7. Dean and Tark die the same week. His ’77 team was one the greatest to watch play the game.
Cause of death was not choking on a towel, BTW.

Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian has died, his son Danny Tarkanian said …

  8. A win tonight would be really nice to see…kind of one of those season trajectory type of wins, which we have not seen with OSU football and basketball in a long, long time. Not “enormity of the moment” CR babble, but just something needed to enhance the legitimacy.

Also, I really want to see the Ducks crap their pants on this road trip, Altman doesn’t deserve to be in the NCAA tourney conversation, he actually deserves to be unemployed.

    • Feels like this is the most important game of the year regarding post season placement for the Beavs. I’m afraid tonight is the night this team falls back squarely into the middle of the Pac and will stay there the rest of the season. NIT bound. Still much better than i had ever hoped for out of this season.

  9. One thing I noticed in the UW game that was a pretty good indicator of how the possession was going to go was how long it took UW to get the ball upcourt. The Beav’s came up into the back court and gave nominal pressure to the UW guards. When it took more than 5-7 seconds to get the ball into the front court, UW rarely produced. It essentially delayed UW from starting their offense until about 25 seconds were left on the shot clock. Then they passed the ball around for 5-10 more seconds looking for holes in the zone, leaving only about 15 seconds for the Beavs to really defend. UW adjusted by throwing long passes up court but by then it was too late.

We’ll see if that stays true in the UCLA game. Extending the zone to slow UCLA from getting into their offense. Obviously the offense will need to produce more. If the beavs can get to 65 points, they win.

    • Just like the Arizona trip. Win tonight and as coach Tinkle said then, they’re playing with house money on Saturday. Tonight is the more difficult of the two games. UCLA is beatable though. However they will have Tony Parker tonight. He did not play in Corvallis.

.@waynetinkle announces that forward Victor Robbins will serve “an extended suspension” after being cited DUI over the weekend.

  11. If Robbins still has a chance to be on the team then his 10 game suspension must have been for something relatively insignificant. Maybe he cheated on a test or had someone write a paper? If it were truly a bonehead move like weed as we all suspected he would be gone after this mishap for sure.

  12. Oregon State is a great home team but lackluster road team. I expect a loss in the 67-54 range. However, if they can beat UCLA at Pauley then OSU deserves to be positioned for serious NCAA Tourney consideration. Winning tonight for right now should put us inside the bubble for now. Our RPI has improved and a nice road win against a quality opponent in the NCAA mix should be a considerable boost and seal us as a NIT lock at minimum. Tinkle getting his team into road warrior mentality with expectations of hard fought wins is the next step up for the Beavers.

  13. WAY OT: and speaking of boners.
Just received an email from OSU marked “Tail Mail”, complete with a shot of Gabby Hanson (behind the infamous orange stripe, of course).
Its hell being a dirty ol man!

    • Baldwin with some good questions there. What the hell is Oregon doing poaching a DII QB, and why not recruit your guy? Pretty bizarre situation.

    • Wasn’t the refs tonight it was lack of offense…and angry was right about Olaf sheesh what a last 4 games he’s had! If only they could switch him and Robbins.

  14. It looks like Tinkle has tweeked the zone. Sagging the man a top of the key to help down low.
Then when theybswing it to the corners, they keep the post man covered and it requires the weak side defender to run out, that’s a long ways

  15. Addendum: So right now there’s a 3:55 scoring drought and missed last 7 FGs. Can’t win if you can’t score at all. They’re doing good on most defensive possessions though.

  16. Olaf is pretty useless on the floor right now. He can’t make wide open shots, provides no value on the defensive end or the boards and has made poor decisions.

    • My kid really dislikes Sanders, says he’s a douche with a capital D, thus, he’s always happy seeing TS playmaking on the floor.

    • Live and die by the zone!
They look too tired to play man defense, so there’s that. There’s not much they can do since they’re clearly on fumes.

  17. That was literally the worst way this half could have ended. Had Schaftenaar on a guy you know wants to shoot the 3, he spins Olaf around and swishes a straight away three. Smh, a 9 point game became a 15 point game really quickly.

  18. NIT #3 seed here we come. If they fall flat to end the season and somehow are excluded from the NIT, which seems doubtful, then I hope they pass on the CBI. No doubt we would be a very tough out at home but dropping that low would be a collapse and program needs a real step higher and not a wannabe tourney with a buy in.

    • They’ll definitely make the NIT, probably just need a couple more wins. They could do some damage in the Pac-12 tourney, and with a little luck, still make the NCAA via that route. I had to stop watching this one; it was brutal. Olaf was a disaster…I can’t watch 5 v 4.

  19. What pisses me off with that idiot O’Neill was that there were mulitple conversations about UCLA making the NCAA tourney even though they have 10 fucking losses already and were BEHIND OSU in the standings to start the game, but no talk about what The Beavs could do to make the tourney, no discussion on any scenarios for them, it was all “can UCLA still make it”.

    • I noticed that. I think because it was on Pac-12 LA. I notice when games are on the Oregon channel they talk up the Beav rebuilding process. They must be coached/told to do this…

      • Also, has something to do with UCLA being a big name school who made a nice postseason run last year and has more talent. Perception is that Oregon State has overachieved and UCLA is underachieving. Not exactly untrue but in that scenario the underachieving big name will almost always be talked up more than the overachiever.

        • Yeah, you’re both right…..it just annoys me because it is not out of the realm of possibility that OSU wins enough of their remaining games to at least be in the bubble conversation. Not very likely, but it’s worth a quick discussion on game day.

    • it is my understanding that had Looney come down with both feet simultaneously it is considered a jump stop and is not a travel. Since he did not, it is 3 steps and traveling. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. But it’s still irritating to see this on a highlight reel when, well, it is a violation that was not called.

    • To keep my NCAA fantasy alive they have to get USC to start the run. I get the road being tough and all, but they aren’t even competitive, they don’t look like the same team. I wonder if it drives WT crazy or if he looks at what they’ve accomplished, thinks about next year and kind of lets it go?

      • I’d almost rather them just make the NIT. Then they would have a chance to play at home and advance instead of being one and done. Also I hope they remember that USC shredded the zone last time they played

      • I think they need the USC win to build some confidence for Utah on the 19th and the trip to Stanford & Cal. Colorado should be a gimmee. Sadly I won’t make Utah, it’s mother’s birthday and she won’t go….damn!

  20. This team is on fumes, guys. Look at the minutes they average. Olaf can barely move. Reid has a heart condition that limits him. Robbins let the entire team down, and the University and fans. It’s finally caught up with them. They’ll win a few games at home to make the NIT, which is an amazing accomplishment, but they could have done more, and that makes it a shame.

    • Reid has a heart condition? I hadn’t heard that one. The Robbins thing does suck even more, making ‘what could’ve been’ even more of a frustrating option.

      • I’m pretty pumped for next year though. Watching Sanders play off the bench last night for the first time was painful. I know he’s a walk on and all, but he really didn’t belong anywhere near the court. Every pass looked like it was going to get picked off.

Next year, regardless of how green they’ll be, we’ll have guys coming in who know how to put the ball in the hoop in Tinkle and Thompson Jr. Bruce should be an adequate ball handler from day 1, to give some relief to Duvivier and Payton II. Then Gligorije and Drew Eubanks can spell the big men for a few minutes. Should really help with the fatigue, and scoring will get a bump too. I really don’t expect much from Togiai since he’ll be practicing with the football team during the off season and isn’t expected to be a 2 sport athlete after his freshman year.

  21. Wanna bet? I’m not gonna wager on the USC game since it’s a roadie (and I’m on the fence but leaning 60/40 Beavs). But I’d be willing to bet these guys finish 17-0 at home (postseason not withstanding, but regular season). Name your napkin

    • If the Beavs go undefeated at home like Whiskey says AND beats USC/Cal on the road, they at least get in the bubble discussion. Beating Utah is going to help the RPI. 12-6 conference record 21-9, in a big 5 conference you have to be getting a close look. Then if they somehow do that, the P-12 tourney becomes crucial.

My fear is the Quacks get in as the 4th team especially if they beat UCLA this weekend. My personal prediction is the Beavs finish 19-11 or 18-12 regular season and go to the NIT.

Here’s something that I don’t think was mentioned yet….one more win and a winning season is guaranteed. That in of itself is a pretty damn good accomplishment considering how rare those have been in the last 25 years. The only way they finish .500 is if they lose all of their remaining league games, a P-12 tourney game and God forbid a first round CBI game.
