7:00 p.m. on Pac-12
It’ll be interesting to see if they can win a road game after regaining their confidence and playing near their highest level all season. UCLA is 11-3 at home, and the Beavs 2-7 on the road, so track record isn’t in their favor…
Go Beavs!
They’ll get hosed by the refs, lose composure and then the game. It’s no knock on them but it will be what happens because P12 incompetence in officiating. 72-57 UCLA.
(Please Beaver in the Sky let me be wrong)
That’s exactly what I think will happen, and almost wrote it, but I didn’t want to whine about refs before the game started…
Not sure about 72, though.
I’ll go one further and say that in the first half we’re going to punch them in the mouth with a 15-6 run. Then the refs will activate homer mode and it will be a battle until questionable calls kill us with 6 minutes left in the game lol
didn’t nail it but pretty fucking close. 75-59
Very accurate call OSDS!
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but 72? we’ve only given up that many points one in conference and that was to a red-hot ASU team that was raining threes. UCLA only shoots 34% behind the arc, no way they get to 72 tonight.
I jiust feel we are due that sort of defensive meltdown. However except for the Civil War this year the reverse of any prediction I make about my Beavs comes true.
Still, the fact that I’d call 72 pts a defensive meltdown makes me feel good about the WT era
The Bruins have Parker back. He was out when they played at Gill. Since his return they have played much better. This is one that I think the Beavs lose.
Same deal as always. Make perimeter shots on the road, and you can win. Miss them, and you’re in for a long game with a poor outcome.
Initially it was that they would hardly win any games. Now the dialogue by many of the TV guys is that the Beavs are a talentless team who can’t win on the road. It would be nice to see the team force that change in the discussion with a road win.
That’s up to them. It’s all in their heads. The “no talent” comes from a team who is comfortable putting the ball in the hoop at home because the visuals and sounds are comfortable. When you get into a different arena, the backdrop changes colors, lighting and depth. The sounds travel differently. It’s more a matter of muscle memory and confidence in that than it is keying off landmark visuals and sounds. If they know while they’re standing on the arc or at the FT line that the hoop is the same size and same distance from floor marks, then replication of their shot needs to be trusted enough to comfortably put the ball in the hoop.
That’s why I say it’s more a matter of experience than it is talent. These guys have all had previous minutes, some as starters and high minutes. But except for GP2 all our kids are the equivalent of sophomores with no upper class leadership. Even without the incoming class, this same group will be much better on the road next year. That bodes well for the incoming class because they will have these guys as their upper class experience and leadership to take them on the road and help them prepare for each and every venue, coaching style, player scouting, etc.
In LA for a few days on the way to Mexico, visiting some friends. My buddy insists that there are walkup tickets available to the game tonight. Might give it a try…JB
I would do that in a heartbeat.
Your buddy is not wrong.
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/conference-650590-pac-attendance.html
let’s check that line again…almost made run out and fund my account for a UCLA wager @ 1.5
My book has Bruins at 9 and 120.5…sounds like a no wager.
I wrote the post a few days ago and scheduled it to post today. Maybe the line changed?
edit: it changed, but not that much. I have no idea where I saw -1.5…maybe a bad site, or maybe google returned old data for the game at gill?
Yeah, -1.5 was the 1/22 game at gill. doh.
If you look at the series history, OSU have covered 6 straight games, though, and most of that under CR.
http://www.vegasinsider.com/college-basketball/matchups/oregon-state-@-california-los-angeles.cfm/date/02-11-15
So -9 implies take the Beavs w/points. Vegas has been overvaluing UCLA and everyone is still undervaluing the Beavs. No wager is a good call, too. It’s hard to get a feel for this game.
Anybody know anything about who WT is recruiting for 2016?
http://verbalcommits.com/schools/oregon-state
If you click on individual players, you will see additional names within each of the position groups as well.
Thanks. I know that site, but I was wondering if it is accurate and if there were any rumors of any early commits.
The names are good for now. You don’t really see too much in commits until summer leagues roll around. And as these names commit to whatever schools (or before) you’ll hear about who Tinks is really going after when reports of him and his staff roll in about who they’re going to watch at any given tourney.
OT… I’m sure there will be a thread about this tomorrow… but baseball starts in two days.
Has anyone heard anything about how the incoming class is performing in practices? There is an obscene amount of talent coming in this year.
Casey has mentioned that he’s going to have to depend on them. 2 starting pitchers will be freshman because Thompson is out with an injury. I’m guessing at least 3 starters in the field will be freshman too.
What happened to Thompson?
Cary is supposed to be a five tool. Harrison and Gillette should be good out of the gates. I think Rasmussen and Heimlich might be the arms we lean on early, unless Eckert’s Juco numbers translate to the D1 level.
Dean and Tark die the same week. His ’77 team was one the greatest to watch play the game.
Cause of death was not choking on a towel, BTW.
Remembering Jerry Tarkanian
ESPN? – 41 mins ago
Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian has died, his son Danny Tarkanian said …
A win tonight would be really nice to see…kind of one of those season trajectory type of wins, which we have not seen with OSU football and basketball in a long, long time. Not “enormity of the moment” CR babble, but just something needed to enhance the legitimacy.
Also, I really want to see the Ducks crap their pants on this road trip, Altman doesn’t deserve to be in the NCAA tourney conversation, he actually deserves to be unemployed.
Two more wins to clinch .500 record in conference. That hasn’t been done since 92-93
Feels like this is the most important game of the year regarding post season placement for the Beavs. I’m afraid tonight is the night this team falls back squarely into the middle of the Pac and will stay there the rest of the season. NIT bound. Still much better than i had ever hoped for out of this season.
probably the most realistic prediction : /
One thing I noticed in the UW game that was a pretty good indicator of how the possession was going to go was how long it took UW to get the ball upcourt. The Beav’s came up into the back court and gave nominal pressure to the UW guards. When it took more than 5-7 seconds to get the ball into the front court, UW rarely produced. It essentially delayed UW from starting their offense until about 25 seconds were left on the shot clock. Then they passed the ball around for 5-10 more seconds looking for holes in the zone, leaving only about 15 seconds for the Beavs to really defend. UW adjusted by throwing long passes up court but by then it was too late.
We’ll see if that stays true in the UCLA game. Extending the zone to slow UCLA from getting into their offense. Obviously the offense will need to produce more. If the beavs can get to 65 points, they win.
SI piece on GPII.
http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2015/02/11/gary-payton-ii-oregon-state-pac-12
Make sure to remind Lindsey you can’t recruit GPII to Corvallis.
And we should have appreciated CR. He was a great coach, but who can win the all the rainy weather?
“For all the negative press Robinson received in a six-year tenure in which he compiled a 94-105 record (39-69 Pac-12), he did two important things for Oregon State”
Hahaha and that was from Lindsey. Revisionist history.
I think most people that followed the program recognized that he did well fundraising, recruiting, and getting GP back involved in the program. He just isn’t skilled enough to coach at the Pac-12 level.
It comes across as apologist to us, but most SI reader probably know nothing about OSU basketball and I think it’s a fair assessment that CR was a failure on the court but did things well off the court.
1. practice facility
2. got fired
both were definitely important
I actually agree with her. He helped get connections with alums like AC Green and Payton going again, and the practice facility should be credited to the extra work he put in to get that thing built.
I agree with her, too. CR was a disaster in terms of record and coaching ability, but he got us a practice facility. Without that, does WT take the job? Who knows, but it was definitely a knock on the job.
Speaking of AC Green, where’s he been this season? A CR loyalist or does he just have something else going on?
I heard he finally discovered hookers and coke
LS was one of the worst things to happen to OS sports.
DS!
“Payton Sr. resides in Vegas, and travels to almost every Oregon State game.”
How does he do that without a local airport?
Jet Pack!
Gary Payton has his own G-5 airplane……..and llllots of money….playaaa……
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZa_5k937hg
There it is again. You can’t win in Corvallis. So the Pac-12 must be complete garbage this year outside of Arizona and Utah because OSU is winning? Got it assclown
“You know your league isn’t very good when Oregon State (to no fault of Wayne Tinkle) is tied for third.”
http://espn.go.com/ncb/notebook/_/page/dailyword150211/daily-word
I see a loss tonight, but to me its all good if they can get a split on the road.
GO BEAVS!!
Just like the Arizona trip. Win tonight and as coach Tinkle said then, they’re playing with house money on Saturday. Tonight is the more difficult of the two games. UCLA is beatable though. However they will have Tony Parker tonight. He did not play in Corvallis.
Connor Letourneau ?@ConnOregonian 40m40 minutes ago
.@waynetinkle announces that forward Victor Robbins will serve “an extended suspension” after being cited DUI over the weekend.
I take this to mean he’ll be dismissed after the season
Could be, but you’ll be in a better position to discern the meaning if you read Connor’s article:
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/02/victor_robbins_suspended_orego_1.html
My take: he’ll be dismissed whenever he fails to follow the “structure in place”. Could happen any time. Additionally, I suppose his days of helping the team by participating in practice sessions are now over.
that’s how I took it. Fuck this one up and he’s gone. He’s on his last life line.
He’s on the Kiko Alonso plan. Next year he’ll probably be the NCAA tournament MVP and get drafted in the 1st round.
Man, sounds like Tinkle wants to keep him. Sends a bad message…
Well, its kids we are talking about. The system should try as much as possible to teach them to become adult. I think I trust Tinkle to do what he can to support them.
Athletes already believe they’re above the law.
The “bad message” thing is a bit cliche. Do you think other players see this and think “so this means i can get a DUI too and all that will happen is I’ll get benched and have my name smeared in the news”.
Of course they do. Happens in every job.
That’s right y’all! Its wurking!!!
Thanx to my supporters. All haters can kiss my ass!
YOU DONT KNOW ME OR ANYTHING ABOUT ME SO KEEP MY NAME OUT YO MOUFFF!!!!
I think we found B Fizzy’s new screen name
seriously. Put down the hookah and slowly back away
If Robbins still has a chance to be on the team then his 10 game suspension must have been for something relatively insignificant. Maybe he cheated on a test or had someone write a paper? If it were truly a bonehead move like weed as we all suspected he would be gone after this mishap for sure.
Oregon State is a great home team but lackluster road team. I expect a loss in the 67-54 range. However, if they can beat UCLA at Pauley then OSU deserves to be positioned for serious NCAA Tourney consideration. Winning tonight for right now should put us inside the bubble for now. Our RPI has improved and a nice road win against a quality opponent in the NCAA mix should be a considerable boost and seal us as a NIT lock at minimum. Tinkle getting his team into road warrior mentality with expectations of hard fought wins is the next step up for the Beavers.
Still a long shot IMO.
But I guess that’s why you have to play the games.
Lose the MattWells boner already, or I’m going to have to call your doctor.
WAY OT: and speaking of boners.
Just received an email from OSU marked “Tail Mail”, complete with a shot of Gabby Hanson (behind the infamous orange stripe, of course).
Its hell being a dirty ol man!
Off topic before 7pm tipoff:
EWU Beau Baldwin basically quotes Tom Petty
“Don’t Come Around Here No More”
http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2015/02/vernon_adams_after_announcing.html#incart_m-rpt-1
Baldwin with some good questions there. What the hell is Oregon doing poaching a DII QB, and why not recruit your guy? Pretty bizarre situation.
Go Beavs!
Olaf…brutal stuff. Bad pass, bad d, 5 or 6 point swing right there
Jesus tits Helen. This one is starting off just like the ASU game in Tempe. UCLA cannot miss. WTF?
Hittin’ threes like UW vs the gals.
UCLA’s crowd looks weak. Dude really said OSU has no talent and pronounced Tres’ name as Trez…c’mon Pac-12 announcers.
Won’t have to worry about them getting loud, I hear crickets.
Those stupid rims though?
This looks like a loss.
UCLA has been on fire from 3 and only has a 4 point lead. Good sign. They’ll regress from three.
Refs are terrible as usual.
Wasn’t the refs tonight it was lack of offense…and angry was right about Olaf sheesh what a last 4 games he’s had! If only they could switch him and Robbins.
Is it just me or do our bigs not put their arms up on D when the opposing team attacks the basket.
It looks like Tinkle has tweeked the zone. Sagging the man a top of the key to help down low.
Then when theybswing it to the corners, they keep the post man covered and it requires the weak side defender to run out, that’s a long ways
Beavs look tired.
They need Olaf to go on one of those 3 barrages to get/stay in this game
difference in the game so far. UCLA 3 pt shooting
Just got bailed out by that call…Looney stripped that one clean.
Reid is now over confident on offense and is forcing bad drives and shots.
Addendum: So right now there’s a 3:55 scoring drought and missed last 7 FGs. Can’t win if you can’t score at all. They’re doing good on most defensive possessions though.
I didn’t realize Reid had a heart condition, too. Now I understand why he seems lazy out there on D sometimes.
Olaf is pretty useless on the floor right now. He can’t make wide open shots, provides no value on the defensive end or the boards and has made poor decisions.
He’s not even moving around trying to get open…
His confidence looks shot. Completely passive. Wants no part of physical play and just stands around and hopes he can get an open three off. Really hard to watch
Nice fucking travel on that dunk Looney. Plain as day and no call?
Olaf needed to hit that 3shot, open.
Cheerleaders are the highlight thus far.
Why is Olaf the one that helps MD bring the ball up the court? Shouldn’t it be one of the smaller guys… he’s all tall and stuff
They showed Tark eating a whiskey soaked towel!
Good looks, not as many shots falling. Add in a couple bad lapses on defense that match the great plays, down by 10.
Uh oh. Sanders in and throws it to the other team on his first pass lol
My kid really dislikes Sanders, says he’s a douche with a capital D, thus, he’s always happy seeing TS playmaking on the floor.
Game over.
That three is the dagger. Ball game. Just hope the Beavers don’t lose by 20
Olaf is the main reason for the loss tonight. Terrible passing and D, and didn’t even move on O to get open 3s…5 vs 4
Fuck. Went from being in this game to over just like that. UCLA unconscious on 3 pointers. Unreal. Just like ASU
Live and die by the zone!
They look too tired to play man defense, so there’s that. There’s not much they can do since they’re clearly on fumes.
That was literally the worst way this half could have ended. Had Schaftenaar on a guy you know wants to shoot the 3, he spins Olaf around and swishes a straight away three. Smh, a 9 point game became a 15 point game really quickly.
The just aren’t even competitive on the road since the WSU win, they look like the team I kind of thought they would be.
All of those wide open UCLA threes are bringing back heinous memories of Robinson’s defense.
NIT #3 seed here we come. If they fall flat to end the season and somehow are excluded from the NIT, which seems doubtful, then I hope they pass on the CBI. No doubt we would be a very tough out at home but dropping that low would be a collapse and program needs a real step higher and not a wannabe tourney with a buy in.
They’ll definitely make the NIT, probably just need a couple more wins. They could do some damage in the Pac-12 tourney, and with a little luck, still make the NCAA via that route. I had to stop watching this one; it was brutal. Olaf was a disaster…I can’t watch 5 v 4.
GPII is so good. Only Beaver doing anything productive. Needs to improve his perimeter shooting and foul shooting though.
What is Kevin O’Neil smoking?
maybe hanging out with him is what got VR suspended?
Dirty toilet paper
How dumb is Kevin O’neil?!!!
Can’t believe this guy was once a D1 coach.. He sounds like the guy who changes my tires
Olaf 0 points.
Also, I hope Kevin O’Neil dies very soon. Worst human I have ever heard on the air.
Olaf is in free fall, this where losing Robbins hurts a lot.
Kevin O’Neill can really eat a bag of wee wee dicks. He just says whatever lol
Cheerleaders are still the highlight.
……..aaaaannnnnnd that play seals it for me.
It took that long to seal it for you???????
I support my squad. But that scrum and dunk made me turn it off.
Clang, clang clang went the trolley…
Ugly game.
What pisses me off with that idiot O’Neill was that there were mulitple conversations about UCLA making the NCAA tourney even though they have 10 fucking losses already and were BEHIND OSU in the standings to start the game, but no talk about what The Beavs could do to make the tourney, no discussion on any scenarios for them, it was all “can UCLA still make it”.
I noticed that. I think because it was on Pac-12 LA. I notice when games are on the Oregon channel they talk up the Beav rebuilding process. They must be coached/told to do this…
Also, has something to do with UCLA being a big name school who made a nice postseason run last year and has more talent. Perception is that Oregon State has overachieved and UCLA is underachieving. Not exactly untrue but in that scenario the underachieving big name will almost always be talked up more than the overachiever.
Yeah, you’re both right…..it just annoys me because it is not out of the realm of possibility that OSU wins enough of their remaining games to at least be in the bubble conversation. Not very likely, but it’s worth a quick discussion on game day.
It was on all Pac12 channels, including the national feed. Kevin O’Neal has done nothing but shit on the Beavs all season.
I didn’t realize that. I watched it on the LA one.
That is pretty messed up then.
not entirely true. He did say Wayne Tinkle was doing the best head coaching job in the country and the beavs are a lock for the NIT. That was about a month ago. But now all he says is that they can’t win on the road.
And that they have no talent.
other than GP II he says.
and on the flip side Kevin O’Neill has no coaching talent. So I don’t hold his opinion in high regard. That’s why he’s in the broadcast booth and not on the sidelines somewhere
Hmmm, no coaching talent-not on the sidelines-in broadcast booth……..sounds like CR, although I’ve not cared enough to see if CR ever really is in a broadcast booth.
Am I wrong on this? I said this was clearly a travel. He took 3 steps, then jumped and dunked. Unless something in the rules changed
http://www.snappytv.com/snaps/looney-dunk-in-transition-about-men-s-basketball-oregon-state-at-ucla-on-pac-12-los-angeles_dq
it is my understanding that had Looney come down with both feet simultaneously it is considered a jump stop and is not a travel. Since he did not, it is 3 steps and traveling. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. But it’s still irritating to see this on a highlight reel when, well, it is a violation that was not called.
Really hope they can flush this one and get USC on Saturday. They’ll get an extra day of rest at least
To keep my NCAA fantasy alive they have to get USC to start the run. I get the road being tough and all, but they aren’t even competitive, they don’t look like the same team. I wonder if it drives WT crazy or if he looks at what they’ve accomplished, thinks about next year and kind of lets it go?
I’d almost rather them just make the NIT. Then they would have a chance to play at home and advance instead of being one and done. Also I hope they remember that USC shredded the zone last time they played
I think they need the USC win to build some confidence for Utah on the 19th and the trip to Stanford & Cal. Colorado should be a gimmee. Sadly I won’t make Utah, it’s mother’s birthday and she won’t go….damn!
Only way we’re making the ncaa tourney is by winning the Pac 12 tourney
at this point, I agree. RPI won’t climb high enough by winning at home and losing on the road
I’m a little creeped out by how close my prediction was.
This team is on fumes, guys. Look at the minutes they average. Olaf can barely move. Reid has a heart condition that limits him. Robbins let the entire team down, and the University and fans. It’s finally caught up with them. They’ll win a few games at home to make the NIT, which is an amazing accomplishment, but they could have done more, and that makes it a shame.
Reid has a heart condition? I hadn’t heard that one. The Robbins thing does suck even more, making ‘what could’ve been’ even more of a frustrating option.
I’m pretty pumped for next year though. Watching Sanders play off the bench last night for the first time was painful. I know he’s a walk on and all, but he really didn’t belong anywhere near the court. Every pass looked like it was going to get picked off.
Next year, regardless of how green they’ll be, we’ll have guys coming in who know how to put the ball in the hoop in Tinkle and Thompson Jr. Bruce should be an adequate ball handler from day 1, to give some relief to Duvivier and Payton II. Then Gligorije and Drew Eubanks can spell the big men for a few minutes. Should really help with the fatigue, and scoring will get a bump too. I really don’t expect much from Togiai since he’ll be practicing with the football team during the off season and isn’t expected to be a 2 sport athlete after his freshman year.
Wanna bet? I’m not gonna wager on the USC game since it’s a roadie (and I’m on the fence but leaning 60/40 Beavs). But I’d be willing to bet these guys finish 17-0 at home (postseason not withstanding, but regular season). Name your napkin
If the Beavs go undefeated at home like Whiskey says AND beats USC/Cal on the road, they at least get in the bubble discussion. Beating Utah is going to help the RPI. 12-6 conference record 21-9, in a big 5 conference you have to be getting a close look. Then if they somehow do that, the P-12 tourney becomes crucial.
My fear is the Quacks get in as the 4th team especially if they beat UCLA this weekend. My personal prediction is the Beavs finish 19-11 or 18-12 regular season and go to the NIT.
Here’s something that I don’t think was mentioned yet….one more win and a winning season is guaranteed. That in of itself is a pretty damn good accomplishment considering how rare those have been in the last 25 years. The only way they finish .500 is if they lose all of their remaining league games, a P-12 tourney game and God forbid a first round CBI game.
