      • Based solely on Sanders (in)ability to pass a basketball in the limited time I’ve seen him play, I’m scared to see what he does with a football.

      • I have watched Tanner Sanders play football, basketball, and baseball since Tanner was 12 (including as a teammate, and opponent, of my kids, from Little League through varsity ball at Crescent Valley). Tanner’s fantasy has always been to play QB for the Beavers, and it looks like Gary Andersen is going to give Tanner another shot (perhaps because Tanner is a potential dual-threat QB who is a decent open-field runner, and therefore a better fit than some of the other QBs on the roster such as Kempt and Del Rio).

Tanner is a talented athlete. However, as I’ve suggested in prior posts, I don’t think Tanner has — or will have — the skills to be a successful PAC-12 QB. I continue to believe that Tanner would be much better as a WR for the Beavs (where I think he has the talent, after another year or two of conditioning and training, to make a real contribution to the program). I’m hoping and expecting that he goes back to WR at some point this Spring or Fall, and finally gives up on the fantasy of playing QB for the Beavers.

  1. No listed FB. Ricky Ortiz listed as TE.

On the QB front, I think Kempt is gone. Maybe Del Rio as well. Vanderveen, McMaryion and Mitchell probably have the athleticism to compete for PT in the new system. Any thoughts on our starter next year?

    • I still think Del Rio is the QB this year. He’s probably the best passer among them. While not a fit for GA’s offense, I’m guessing they don’t implement the full offense until they get the QB who fits. Everyone knew that the QB this year would not be a runner and I don’t think anyone wants Collins to start so early.

Also GA didn’t have a running QB in the last half of last year. He managed. He’ll have to manage this year and probably next year without a running threat at QB.

      • GA might be OK without a “running” QB per se, but I think that the QB will be expected to run in some capacity. A guy without great mobility would have to be overwhelmingly good as a pocket passer to win the job. I don’t see Del Rio running away with anything, even if he’s the best pocket passer today.

GA’s line was “Our QB will win with his arms, his legs, and his mind.” Hard to imagine him giving up on one of those elements entirely.

On a positive note, it is much easier for a mobile QB to be effective earlier in their career. Having the ability to scramble effectively gives you a lot of outs. Looking forward to QBs who can win before their Sr year…

    • I think it’ll be McMaryion or Seth Collins. As McKalk pointed out, GA seems to really want Seth Collins to be the starter. Enrolled him early, the staff talked him up…etc. McMaryion is a pretty good passer on film, but not as good a runner as Collins. Mitchell can run a little but hops/jumps when he throws and looks to have a weak arm. Vanderveen can do a little of everything but is erratic. His experience gives him an intangible. My gut says McMaryion the likely starter and then Collins or Vanderveen as next up. I think Del Rio is out. He has nothing GA looks for.

      • I tend to agree. It’ll either be McMaryion or Collins. I think Collins is a better runner though. Went back and watched some of McMaryion’s tape. It’s pretty easy to make some of those throws to a wide open receiver. Also made some poor decisions too. I saw at least one that was thrown into triple coverage. That’s an INT in the Pac-12. He was a 3 star guy so obviously he has some skills. However since this will be a complete offensive overhaul, the job is up for grabs.

    • Him and Bays were both nice prospects — part of that great OL class. Isaac hurt, too. What a disaster that all turned out to be. Hopefully they can salvage Isaac at least.

      • Andrews and Mitchell are both good players. I always have thought Andrews could be an elite lineman, can’t teach his size. Maybe new staff can help him and salvage Isaac and that class is still solid.

        • That was a great OL class and had the potential to elevate the team. Luck O the Beav’s, and most of them are gone. Too bad the gum chewer only tried to recruit really good linemen every five years or so.

  2. Anyone else having trouble getting the Lady Beavs on PAC12 net, via internet??
EDIT: Finally got a decent connection, after about a dozen attempts. Good Gals down 7 with 7 minutes left in first half; another slow start. Gonna be hard to go far in the NCAA with slow starts.

  3. At this point, I’m just hoping for a competitive road effort from the Beavs, I’ll accept a loss if it’s a hard fought and close game. Win against Cal would be nice for their NIT prospects though.

    • having an extra day off between games should help tired legs. Although Cal played last night and will have 2 extra days. Beavs are 2-0 in the Pac-12 on Sunday’s this year. Stanford shoots 3’s just as well as Utah so the Beavs are gonna have to defend and not have any offensive lapses with zero pts for several minutes to have any chance.

  4. first row sports had several pac-12 women’s games on their website this morning – by gametime they have all been pulled. O-live’s open thread is featuring Ken Goe – I was so hoping he had disappeared. Painful to listen to Ron Callan – his play calling seems to be on 15-second delay.

  5. Gals cut trees lead to a single point just before halftime.
Ruth missing a few near layups, Jamie shootin’ 3’s and 2’s.
I expect a more focused second half, gals were a bit tight starting the game. I’ll trust Rueck here.

    • also going to have to defend that pick and roll just above the FT line. That gal for Stanford just killed them with open looks from 15 feet

  6. Lady Beavs are going to go down in this one. Wiese is mia.

Question? Are both the men’s and women’s team practicing at Gill anymore, or is all practice at the new practice facility? I wonder if they are doing all the practice at the new facility, does that mean they only time they are shooting at Gill is during a game?

    • Interesting question and I don’t know. Ray of hope for women’s game: If they meet up with Stanford in the tournament perhaps it will be a better result.

  7. 29 consecutive losses to Stanford. I’m sure the men will now cap a disappointing evening for beaver fans. Luck o the Beavs

  8. Small sample, but the offense looks much better without Olaf in there. Every look so far as been pretty open. Man, I hate the “Beaver 5 point swing”……Beavs miss an easy layup, other team hits an open three.

  9. I’d like to see charges done away with. The officials routinely screw up blocks and charges. Rather just make it easier for them to actually get calls right

  10. Stanford’s team looks like Google dorks. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them come out in the second half on segways wearing Google Glass.

  11. Tinkle needed to call a timeout to set up a play. Then Olaf is way too far off a corner shooter and it results in a good look. Eerily similar to the USC game

    • Nice to be in the game, but that was a shit last minute. Duvivier miss at the line, Reid unecessary foul, Payton giving up the ball to Sanders and then Olaf going to sleep on defense. I don’t like the similiarites to the USC road game.

  12. Seemed like a great half. A little unfortunate with Sanders travel that could have been huge bucket at the end of the half. The bench playing their best of the year. Damn N’Diayne showing a nice touch. I like what I see, hope they can keep it up.

  13. The end of that first half was straight trash, reminded me of how we ended the half at UCLA. Turn it over, don’t close out on a shooter who is clearly about to shoot, and another Beaver 5 point swing. Plus they didn’t even get the front end of the 1 and 1…ugh.

Beav women was just a disappointing game. Stanford in the first half ran the same play about 8 times…one time I was sitting there at the game and I said “ball screen…pull up” and that’s exactly what happened. Only Hanson knew how to play the screen, which hurt us a lot. 2nd half was a few unfortunate missed threes. Women shot like 6 for 27 from three, with barely decent defense from Tree. I hope they play them again.

  14. At least we aren’t Arizona State. Getting straight butt fucked in Salt Lake City. 70-24 Utah with 6 min left. It was 41-9 Utes at halftime

  15. Tinkle needs to get the team better at closing the last 2 minutes of first halves. Swings like that take games from 55% odds of winning to sub 30% in very little time and it is correctable but team continues to have these issues on the road. Own up and tell yourself we aten’t letting you score. Schaft allowing that shot was inexcusable.

  16. Gomis and Reid now with 4 fouls, Duvivier with 3. I see this getting out of hand with Stanford shooting free throws the rest of the game. Bullshit

  17. I wish Payton would do more of what Randle did, I gotta think Payton can get to the basket and elevate, but it just doesn’t seem to be his game.

  18. When Payton plays well the Beavers play well for the most part. He was really good in the first half and the Beavs played well. He’s struggled in the second half and they can’t score.

  19. Probably would have been 3 pt play for OSU if Reid makes the layup. Instead he misses both FTs. Team needs a road shrink. Tinkle good at home but I think Howland would be a superior road coach. Have to value the tough wins more than the ones where it is easier.

    • A coach doesn’t stop being good when they go on the road. That is complete bs. He’s doing well with what he’s working with. He’s not the one missing free throws and layups and taking bad shots. He puts them in position to succeed and has them play hard. That’s all you can ask for from a coach. The players just aren’t very good as a whole and thus they can’t finish plays

      • All I know is Oregon always turns it on late in the season and OSU almost always shrinks. Crunch time and we are not our best and usually miss out on the good stuff. Team is about to be out of the NIT which is a fairly decent collapse considering they needed to lose quite a few and drop well below where they were to fall all the way to CBI. Not sure beating Oregon will be enough if we lose our Pac-12 Tourney opener as seems most likely as team is only good at home and neutral court probably isn’t as neutral for them as it should be.

      • And how many years has Altman been coaching at Oregon? You’re giving shit to a 1st year coach with a depleted roster? Seriously?

  20. I know this is harsh, but my hope next year is that the team doesn’t even need Schaft. I know he’s not feeling well tonight, but really I’m done with him. Tres Tinkle the job is yours.

  21. I don’t know about anyone else but this game is fucking infuriating. I’ve been able to handle the “inexperience” or whatever all season, but this is inexcusable. They can’t hit a shot, can’t finish a layup, can’t hit a free throw, and it’s an absolute known fact they will not get a rebound. How does it get this bad? I don’t care if they’re on the road… it shouldn’t change the game this much.

    • It was probably the worst half of basketball from them this year (USC on the road is close), but it is what it is at this point. Some talent, but limited at many positions. Reinforcements are arriving, I just hope they are as advertised and can make meaningful contributions right away.

  22. 31 point swing the other way after 9 pt lead isn’t fine coaching. That much swing very rarely happens to the other 11 teams in conference. This game turned into a total dog.

    • and how much deeper are the 11 other teams? And when the refs are blatantly calling it one sided and you have 3 of your 7 scholarship players in foul trouble, it kind of takes the team out of the game and play tentative for fear of picking up another foul.

    • you must have also missed that 83-41 ass raping Utah handed ASU tonight. It was 41-9 at halftime. Herb Sendek must be a shitty coach

  23. Was it 27 years of losing records for the football team? It would be ironic if it’s 27 for the basketball team to make the NCAA’s. I am uncertain how the seniors and freshmen will mix next year, maybe it’s an NIT year and then in 2016/17 the sophmores with another nice class of freshmen make it happen. Duvivier will be a senior also.

  24. Goe now pissing on the OSU ladies team on oregonlive. Someone want to tell him he should go buy a rope, box of razor blades or a gun and end his life. It’s fucking pathetic that it seems his journalistic talents only consist of giving praise to anything Oregon and shitting on anything Oregon St. Seriously. Kill yourself Goe.

    • I guess the word is ironic….Goe spends the better part of five years defending the epitome of mediocrity in Mike Riley and now takes a couple of shots at a coach/team that has taken the program to heights unimaginable five years ago.

      • point me to any piece of journalism penned by Goe that paints Oregon St or Corvallis positively. Every piece he’s ever written has put down the University, community or fan base. You can’t win in Corvallis. Can’t recruit to Corvallis. OSU fans and boosters should be happy with every win they get, blah blah blah. Same shit, different day. The main point of his latest and greatest? You’re Oregon St. You really expected or thought you could beat mighty Stanford? In Corvallis? HA HA HA HA HA. That entire article was a slap in the face. Just like every other piece of shit he’s ever written.

  25. off topic but I just read about the 2nd ducks football player retiring with a year of eligibility left. So I went back and read the first article on O live about defensive lineman Sam Kamp retiring. I won’t link the article but will cut n paste this………..

“When Sam Kamp, an Oregon redshirt junior defensive lineman, tromped onto the field Jan. 12 to play for a national championship against Ohio State, he weighed 292 pounds, just four pounds fewer than his previous season high, the heaviest he’d ever been during his four-year Duck career.

A little more than two weeks later, Kamp left his south Eugene house Tuesday evening for a one-mile run featuring a steady incline toward a hilltop golf course. He weighed 270 pounds. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d run that far at once, he said, his voice catching for air minutes after he’d finished.”

Here’s my question. How in the fuck does a human being drop 22 pounds in 2 weeks without starving themselves or being a complete meth addict?

  26. All I know is Oregon always turns it on late in the season and OSU almost always shrinks. Crunch time and we are not our best and usually miss out on the good stuff. Just saw this. You’re an IDIOT. How could you possibly take shots at a coach who barely has a 7 man rotation with kids playing nearly all the minutes each night, while still getting a winning season when they weren’t even supposed to win more than a few (if really lucky) p12 games? Unbelievable. Educate yourself.

    • Exactly — dufii like MorePayton are way off the mark. This coaching staff and team have done VERY well. The basketball team collapses late in the season? The last good coach we had was Ralph Miller. This current team has the complete right to be GETTING TIRED.

And if we dont get into the NIT, its NOT a collapse, as we were never projected to get there.

      • Well said! With how the team has exceeded expectations, I’ve found myself forgetting that this is happening without a lot of talent. Of course they way it was going for a while I was certainly hoping that they would make the NCAA, now the NIT.

Even if they make nothing it’s been a great ride this season! They’ve played good ball at home and given us fans something to cheer about – a lot more than we expected for sure. AND, the prospects for the future are tremendous!
