  1. “…the way we practice today and the way we practice tomorrow, just because we have pants on, it’s not really any different.”

I hope that’s not related to letting their beasts out

      • I’m not sure. I just thought both reports were good, and not hidden behind a paywall. I don’t support the paywall. Even Nemec has stepped up, though. If people change, I change.

  2. I said MM after I saw his Junior HS highlight tape (name was Tlingit Cannon then, but couldn’t log in anymore…) I WIN!!! Haha

    • My guess is that he went through a wardrobe malfunction. He is still in a white jersey, which the offensive players wear. And in the spring game they put player at all different positions, if you remember they put Garrett Owens (kicker) playing corner.

      • Since this offense rarely uses a TE on the end of the offensive line, and they line up more in the slot, I think moving Caleb to DE is an excellent idea! That would give some of these other guys (that are better athletes in space and better receivers) a chance to play more. Guys like Ortiz, Nall and even a guy like Tanner Sanders (great athlete). They all still have a little bulk but they can actually break their feet down and stalk block, down block or lead block in space. I just see Caleb Smith being very cumbersome and will probably get a bunch of holding calls trying to kick out on a CB that’s going to give him one head move and blow right by him on quick screens and tunnel screen to the outside receivers! It would be nice to have a DE with his height and the guy has a great frame as well.

        Just my take.

  3. How do you guys feel about DeCoud?

He’s one player I can’t get a feel for. When I first watched his film, I remember thinking he was a guy who looked for the big hit rather than playing the ball. Looked like he’d get burned a lot in this conference. Yet, GA named him as someone who impressed him…am I missing something with him?

Also, I don’t understand the comparisons to S. Nelson. Just because they are both CC guys? Nelson was a clear stud. I think I had him ranked a 5-star and tops in that class. This is like when people compared Bolden to Cooks just because they were similar sizes and body types.

Edit: just looked it up: http://angrybeavs.com/rankings/9136

Had him ranked #2 in that class. Had Bolden as a low 4-star. I think Jarmon is better, but his heart seems more in baseball — that’s the one concern with him. Looking at that list, Haskins is guy I might have overrated. Probably more a low 3-star than mid.

What the hell happened to Charlie Tuaau? He seemed really good.

    • Evaluating defensive backs based on highlight reels is inherently misleading because good coverage looks boring. The DB stays on the receiver and the receiver doesn’t get the ball. Who wants to watch 7 minutes of that?

I’ll reserve judgment on anything other than technique until I see him against Weber State.

I do think the Nelson comparisons are probably rooted in their JC stats. They were both big time playmakers at that level.

Haskins’ HS stats looked good and he looked good on film. I pointed it out at the time (while we’re all being Beaver hipsters), but he was playing low-level HS ball, which made him look better than he probably is. For reference, his school has an enrollment of about 400. Yes, he looked like a man among boys, but the level of competition didn’t provide a good reference point for his ability.

    • Regarding Comparisons to Nelson: Has to be based solely on being highly rated JC guys. They have completely different builds/physical tools so there’s no way they look/play similar. Nelson was the more traditional 5’10” burner who can backpedal almost as fast as other players run, allowing him to stick to his man like glue. Decloud has that Richard Sherman build that’s becoming so popular: 6’3″ lengthy corner who can play off the receiver a little bit more (maybe spy the qb a fraction of a second longer) because said length gives him more room for error.

    • Speaking of Decoud, check this out. A follower of Beavrecruiting and angrybeavs wrote a nice piece on him back in May. We tweeted a link to it on August 1st.
Fast forward a few days, and our good friend Connor, who follows @beavrecruiting, wrote essentially the same piece, with some minor tweaks. I know the story could sound very much the same when being told by 2 different people, but the similarities are really hard to ignore, given the phrasing and the timing.

    • I think Decoud is going to be fine. The other thing we have to think about when now trying evaluate new and even existing talent, is that this is a new scheme with more importantly new techniques. CB Larry Scott even mentioned this a few times now about how all they did (the Beav’s D) last season was run man to man (2-man and man free) which puts a lot of pressure constantly on your CBs and even LBs/Ss . This staff runs a lot more zone which is a great thing. And in a Cover 2 base, with big CBs like Decoud and Chappell, you can have them play flats and be force (contain) and… they can re-route receivers easier (being so much bigger/stronger than some of them). The whole key to running straight Cover 2 is re-routing! Last season, I was sick to my stomach watching opposing receivers get a free release on say 3rd and 8, and then they make a 10 yard grab easy because nobody laid a hand on them off the line! That’s ridiculous! Seeing some true Cover 2 and other zone coverages is another thing that teams in our conference will have to get used to about this Beaver team, along with now having a mobile QB, new offensive system with a hurry up involved and hopefully better game and clock management and…..player accountability! If a Safety (from last year’s USC game and I won’t name any names but he graduated thank god) or any other player ever gives up on a play the way he did (stands up after getting knocked down, next to a receiver, then he stands up and watches the receiver run away from him to score from about 30 yards out) they’re hopefully gonna get taken out of the game. Not keep playing and be the starter in the next game as well! Ugh! So glad there’s a new staff here!

Anyway, moral of my post pre-rant, we have to just wait and see the new defense (and offense) before we truly assess players because of all the differences. Some veterans that were ineffective, may become effective in their new role(s)!

    • Charlie Tuaau ended up at Texas A&M Commerce and was a star NT. He won some awards and racked up a bunch of stats, bulked up to 300 lbs. Now he is a UDFA for the Chiefs. I don’t know if he’ll stick, but he’s got a shot at least.

    • I love (not really) how most people continue to mispronounce his name as if it rhymes with “cloud”… which it doesn’t, btw.

  4. I think L. Scott ends up not starting as the season wears on as he will get burned over and over again… Guy is not that good and only gets attention because he’s a Senior

    • He’ll start, but if he keeps getting burned they’ll put him on the #2 WR or zone.
Back to decoud — I agree he could play zone. I just don’t see him being successful playing man with the skills I saw.

  5. OT: we’re thinking about a vacation to Hawaii in september. Either the 19th or 26th through early October. Anyone have experience with Maui during those months? Weather okay, etc? Which would be the better time to go, earlier in September or later?

    • Weather is good at all times during the year. If you surf, then the fall/winter time is best to go because the waves will be bigger.

It’s also less crowded in the fall when school starts and families don’t take vacations.

    • the weather should be fine by then. In my experience, the islands of kind of muggy not only in the summer but even into early September. The actual humidity might not be that much higher than in the northern winter, but without the cold weather contrast from, say, November through February, you notice the humidity more. For that reason, I wouldn’t go there any earlier than October. Check out Kanapaali; great beaches, sensibly priced and more to do than Wailea or Kihei.

    • Thanks dudes. Yeah I like less muggy weather. Would Sept 26th-Oct 3rd fall into range?

It’s the 19th-26th or 26th-Oct3. I was leaning the latter.

My brother has been there 9 times and said to start with Maui for snorkeling and recommended Molokini. He also recommended Kalalau Trail, but I think that is on a different island. Not sure how hard it is to get back and forth to these islands or which is better…

What I am looking for is a good quiet beach, snorkeling, good hikes, and good weather (to me this would be 80s and less humid with less rain).

Also, would you avoid vacation packages and plan out the trip? For lodging, what am I looking at? Airbnb?

      • Found quite a few beaches in West Maui and Upper West Maui that fit your description. Gentle waves and good snorkeling. It’s a trip the first time you come across a giant sea turtle while out there. They swim all around you and theyre huge. Likely outweigh an adult man. Take a cheap underwater camera with video. It’s cook to look back at later. Kapalua bay was a good starter beach. There are a ton of public beaches, but sometimes free parking can be tricky to find. Get a guidebook for tips. Resorts are required to provide a small number of free public spots, but theyre often unmarked.
Had a friend go air b&b, but he said they ended up stuck next to noisy neighbors which ruined their trip. Keep it simple and get a resort. It’s nice to not have to pick up after yourself.

    • September is the hottest and most humid month. And the end of Sept into early October is usually when the tradewinds die for a week or two. It makes it almost as sucky as Florida for that short period.

        • Probably because school starts up and they’re trying to get people to book in the slow season.

If you think about it, it makes sense. It’s in the tropics. You get the sun directly overhead in mid-August. From then until the vernal equinox is just kind of not great weather (if you live there and are waiting for more temperate weather). And for a couple weeks after the equinox you get the doldrums. September is also dead center for typhoon season.

It’s all relative. When you live there, any deviations above 85 and below 75 mean you’re suffering heat stroke or bundling up in a down jacket. It might be a lot like what you’re already used to, just less variance. There are also variances depending on where you are. Windward will be cooler and wetter than leeward by far.

Late April is the opposite of September because you’re going from heavy to light tradewinds and into the dry season. You don’t get Americans because school is still in. But you do get an influx of Japanese around Easter. Also, spring is kicking in, and you can catch the end of the whale migration, maybe seeing some young in the Auau Channel at that time.

  6. Should be a great time to go, school is back in session so not as crowded. I always aim for that time to go back to the islands.

  7. Have you guys seen the video from today’s (Thursday) practice? Some scrimmage work in full pads. Paul Lucas took a pass from Collins and almost went the distance (through traffic)! He’s going to make an instant impact. Especially when he’s got a mismatch in the deep passing game. I can’t wait to see him burn some people downfield. Gives me hope for our deep passing game.

    Go Beavs!

  8. Gina reports on Thursday practice, which she says was, “Intense physically”:

“Marcus McMaryion was the first quarterback to take snaps during the live period, though Seth Collins also took a lot of first-team reps”

And in Lincoln, Eggers gets access (no surprise) to a coaches meeting where Riley eliminates (no surprise) daily doubles in favor of:

one walk-through — “it would probably be best described as a ‘jog-through,’” he says — and one contact workout a day. Part of it is to help limit injuries.

The other part of it? To prepare for slip-n-slide? Those poor bastards.
