Most of my thoughts were shared in the other thread.
I feel this game was an absolute disaster for Collins. Earlier in the season, I said it would take ~ six games before the smoke cleared and we had any clue about the QB position. This is my feeling on where we are, copied from the prior thread:
I want to be clear: I am down on Collins as a PASSER, and always have been. I didn’t like his personality early on, but he grew on me as he grew up and gave better interviews. I can only go by what I see. I love him as a runner, and I see the leadership. I’m not blind and not biased. If he improves I’ll reassess. I’m not tied to MM or any other player. I hope this is clear. MM was a C+ at best. People seem to confuse me picking MM as the best option to start with me claiming MM would be good once he did start. I never said that.
Now that I have seen 5 games of Collins, I can see what he is. A guy who can pass and run vs D2 schools, but can’t do much vs legit D1 schools. He might do okay vs Pac-12 bottom feeders.
I don’t get fooled by athleticism. I grew up in NYC during the Darryl Strawberry/Doc Gooden era. I saw “potential” and all world athleticism that went nowhere. I know what it takes to be great, and it is not raw athleticism. If Collins ever has a Eureka moment and gains those skills, I will gladly point them out and agree he is great. I’m not tied to any player or paradigm, and I’m always ready to shift as players prove themselves. As of now, I view Collins as a liability vs teams with a pulse. This is how I viewed him all along.
Another question is Sitake. I was skeptical of him from the start. There are threads, if you use search, where I point out he wasn’t very good vs spread teams, etc, and seemed dull when speaking. A lot of guys are questioning him after today’s blowout. Is it fair? Not sure. I’d say verdict is out, but keep a close eye on him. Some of these defenders are embarrassing, so it’s not all his fault.
Also, where are all the Mangeo fans? Was his name mentioned once today, besides 15 yards downfield? “Stud” LB label a bit premature? A guy should have to prove it over many games rather than one good game. Just saying.
This game had the potential to put the Beavs ahead of schedule. Now they’re on schedule (you had to expect 2-3, if being realistic). The upcoming two games become large. We need to see improvement and progression.
Nebraska and Oregon both lose. That helps with the shit show earlier.

I wouldn’t limit your comment to just the 3-4. There isn’t a single bright spot that working for the team. They are at least Mike Riley level awful, if not more. I’m not saying that GA won’t turn it around eventually and make us a contender, though if you think it is going to be before year 3 you have really taken advantage of the legalized weed laws.
Doubtful they’d look any better in a 4-3. There is just very little talent on the defensive side of the ball right now. Thanks Riley. Dick
If anyone thought year one with completely new offensive and defensive systems was going to make the offense / defense with players recruited for completely different systems better than before they were morons.
Your sample size argument works in revers for Mageo. This is the first bad game he has had this season.
He was awful vs Stanford, too. The only game where he has been disruptive and not just making tackles 10 yards downfield was Michigan. I don’t count San Jose St or Weber State for any of these players because they won’t face teams like that, so they’re a bad gauge.
I thought the “stud lb” was Sitake’s ID for a position and not a reference to any one specific player.
Anyway, while he can’t be responsible for the schedule including SJS or Weber, I’d like him to return to his aggressive form. Still a fan, just a bit surprised at today’s performance. It’ll take two more games like this for me to say he is a bust.

Dodgers win 5-2. Fuck Conforto (it was really painful to type that). Mets still have the edge right now with the series shifting to NY and the Dodgers starters not named Kershaw and Greinke pitching. Unless they decide to bring back Kershaw on short rest for a game 4 if they lose game 3. And the Mets have Matt Harvey going in game 3. I had no idea that DeGrom and Syndergaard both throw 100mph. Those 2 are young and may be the best 1-2 starting rotation punch in baseball in the next few years. The Mets are finally getting it turned around and will be good for some time. Right now I see this series ending badly for the dodgers in the same fashion as last years LDS in 4 games. My bet right now is on the Cubs to win it all. Made the right call by bringing in an excellent manager with Joe Maddon and Jake Arrietta has just been fucking lights out since July

We also need more big bodies. The 3-4 is brutal right now. I don’t think they have the personnel to run either a 3-4 or 4-3
They don’t even have the personnel to run a 3-3-5. So what should they run? We knew they had no depth. GA mentioned this week that their personnel is off balance they have only 37 defensive players and 46 Offensive players with 3 kickers on schollie. That is what was left over from Riley. 52 of the 85 are Freshmen. Then he has only 13 Seniors so he is going to have a small recruiting class. It is going to take some time to turn this around.
GA said on pre game radio that he couldn’t bring 70 players (as allowed?), only had 67 on the flight.
Those three missing killed us.
My thoughts,
It’s getting more obvious that the players don’t have a great grasp of the system on both sides of the ball yet.
I think the coaches right now seem to be forcing the system on the players vs creating a system based on the personnel they have. This is especially the case on defense. Under this method, it’ll take a while until they get the personnel that fits the defensive system.
On offense, there are times when the players are clicking but more times where they are not. Doesn’t look like they really trust each other to do each other’s jobs.
I’ve pretty much given up hope that the team would be competitive for the middle of the conference. It’s clear they’ll finish near the bottom. Now you can only hope they will be competitive in a few games.
Collins still has plenty of potential in my opinion. Bad accuracy can be fixed. And he came back in the game after hurting his knee. His teammates will give him points for toughness there.
I do hate seeing how the wide receivers are regressing in some ways. They are going to use up their eligibility before becoming consistently dangerous.
The first and second reads are obvious when watching SC drop. While they do break open briefly, and SC is getting better at hitting the tight window, he’s throwing hospital passes. Even the best receiver would start getting alligator arms with that kind of play.
Meanwhile, the third read is breaking wide open with no help over the top since they’re all rolling over the one and two. There were a good four or five different drives where SC could have lobbed long TDs if he had just made it to the third read.
Another bright spot was Lucas gaining 3+ on all sweeps he got. He has some speed and some good vision.

This was a stinker, and there are a lot of blame to go around. Because the QB is the most important position its going to have the most focus. Did he have a bad game? Yes, but to suggest he hasn’t any growth when he was coming off his best game of the season is wrong.
The yards per rush today were fine, maybe it was the playcalling more than anything. Going to the pass too much. Does seem like only JV can get open? Too often the offense was starting in a whole and they were never in sync. The offense as a whole didn’t play well nobody stood up until Woods busted a few runs in the 2nd half after the game was over. For as many poor throws there were as many dropped passes from the “Best WR corp in the Pac12”. Guyton has the size but he had a horrible game today.
This game was lost on Special Teams and Defense. Arizona ran right through our defense like a hot knife through butter. They doubled teamed our front 3 and were still able to get an OL onto the second level LB and just gashing us over and over. I don’t think we have the available bodies up front to make the defense work. The Safeties have been soft all year. We are small and weak.
Whats up with the return game? That was terrible today. The avg starting position put too much pressure on the offense, that is not an excuse but it did contribute. That fake punt was a good call but poorly executed, and on fakes you have to only run them if you know it will work. Vanderveen’s pass was off target to an open receiver.
The defense was the real problem we were not going to outscore that team today regardless how good our ST or O was. Now do wonder about Sitake’s scheme, but given the fact that we are so frail, I will give him a pass this year.
The fake punt may have been a good call, but the alignment gave away any real chance to surprise anyone. Three blockers side by side on all punts EXCEPT for the fake where two of the three were on one side near the LOS. Can’t blame the players for that, can ya?

Don’t see our offense keeping pace with the Cougs. Mostly because I don’t believe we can score more than 24 points against anyone in the conference with the state of the offense. That will only win you maybe 1 game in conference without superb defense. WSU usually scores 35+ and don’t see our D holding them under 30. Until we see anything that shows GA, Baldwin or Sitake are capable of solid all around play against Power 5 teams keep taking the opposition over points even if we are 8-11 point dogs. Much more likely we will lose by 17+. Very crappy game and effort from OSU today.
This game really demonstrated how few players on our roster are actually FBS level talent. I do think our coaches need to do better but not sure on defense that much can be done. LBs are slow on reads and d line is getting exposed. Our d line is atrocious. Michigan, Stanford, and nowe Arizona have all beat us with power run in the c gap. Literally they line up in different formations and run the same play. Any team can beat us if they simply run that play. Coaches need to adjust but at some point you have to accept that our players are sufficiently so much less talented that nothing can be done to fix this.
Also of note, our WRs need to step up in a major way. Blocking on the outside is poor and no one seems to run a route that can get them open. Some of that is route concepts but all is very poor and killing our offense.
And regarding the return game, how many times do we have to suffer watching Dockery make continued dumb decisions? He is awful at decision making and honestly doesn’t bring any speed/moves. He doesn’t even have sure hands!
Overall, this is probably a 4+ year rebuild at this point. We need to get some serious d line and o line talent though before we even begin to see our team compete. I am excited about our 4 star recruits but I want to see a few where it counts (in the trenches) before I feel comfortable in the recruiting of this staff.

If you can explain how Sitake’s defense is going to stop Royce Freeman, then I would by a Toilet Bowl 2, otherwise The Quacks win again. Lot of mediocore Duck’s teams destroyed bad Beaver teams in the 80’s and early 90’s.
Yeah any team with a serviceable run game is going to roll this defense.
Hate to agree on this point but the Ducks are still so much better and talented than the Beavs. We still lose this year and maybe for another 2 before we’re competitive. Hope I’m wrong.
I apologize to any Zonies who may be lurking. That was one big soup sandwich. That team beats nobody on any given day. Our QB left probably four TDs on the field by trying to squeeze hospital passes into bad places. Our D either blew an obvious assignment for 70 yards or allowed 90% of run yardage after contact (aka, missed tackles).
I thought the refs were marking us a yard short then Zony a yard beyond on every play. Then we switched ends and it happened in our favor. I started watching the line judge, and he was stepping a yard to the screen’s left then moving back to the LoS just before the snap. It was the weirdest thing I’ve seen. We and Zony had receivers wave to that ref while standing a full half yard beyond the ball… with no flags thrown. Just strange.
This has to be the tape you just throw in the circular file. The bright spots were Nall, MM and Storm when Nall was lead blocking.
The play-calling sucked. SC was seeing NOTHING on the field, and power was working. So we put it in whose hands?

I think this was the same crew as the osu v Stanford game. I didn’t see what you mentioned about the lone judge but it wouldn’t surprise me at all. This crew is overmatched and struggles with the basics such as spot, down and distance, and overall field awareness. It is quite sad to watch a college crew struggle when plenty of high school refs across the country do these simple things so well.
They seemed to do pretty well overall, IMO. They slowed the game with all the replays and conferences. But I think they made all the right calls when they did so. The Zony O-line was holding on the interior all game, so I don’t know why they finally called it in the end when the game was essentially over. Other than that, there wasn’t too much to complain about.
Nice execution by Wazzu down the stretch to take the win. What bugs me about our team is I feel team going through motions too much. Baldwin play calling has been sporadic more times than not and kinda like throwing amateur darts at the wall. The good teams line up with intent with everyone on the same page highly interested in executing so they can accomplish some good things. That is rarely OSU but needs to be. This team is a bit physically weak but very mentally weak.

It’s going to take 3-4 recruiting cycles to flush the Riley out of this program. Of those 52 freshman (redshirt and true) more were recruited by Riley and his merry band of misfits than by GA and staff. And I highly doubt many of them are D1 players. Right now I just don’t see many contributors on the field. The lack of talent in the trenches is quite evident on both sides of the ball. That is a big problem but isn’t all of the problems. It does start there though. What do we have? Maybe 2 or 3 really good players on Defense? But those 2 or 3 can easily be negated by a decent offense effectively eliminating them from any play. I was optimistic before but looking at it now, I think most prognosticators had it right. Probably right around 4-8. You just cannot hide several turds and protect them from looking bad. I don’t blame Sitake at all that it isn’t working. He was given mostly shit to work with in the beginning. I really hope we see a mass exodus of the Riley players at the end of this season. Change your attitude and mindset or see your way out. There’s no room for that shit here anymore. Fuck Riley in his bald headed ass and I hope he fails miserably at Nebraska. He’s done more in the last several years to royally screw OSU than make the situation better. We’re going to hit rock bottom again (as we are seeing now) before it will get better. Patience

Pretty much just sad, heh… Some will take solace in the fact that both Oregon and Nebraska lost, but… both of those teams would probably still handily beat us. Oregon is probably going to destroy us in the Civil War again, this year. The team did not improve at all over the bye week. I agree with Angry’s assessment that Collins is a bad passer. He has a lot of work to do on his accuracy and decision-making.
I am most disappointed in the D. I thought they would be our rock this year, after the first couple of games. Oregon State always used to have strong defenses, even when our offense lacked… It’s sad the way things have deteriorated. Feels like the 90’s again. I don’t even know if I can really enjoy any college football this year, heh…
The sample size is too small. You knew there were going to be growing pains with the system implementations, and changes in philosophy. I don’t think the coaching staff can legitimately start to be criticized until they have at least a two year sample size. Bottom line: Right now, this team is #12 out of #12 in the Pac-12 in terms of talent. The cupboard wasn’t exactly bursting. Let’s not overreact to one bad loss. With the exception of the first two home games, the talent on the field does not favor the Beavers, unlike what some wearing Orange-Colored Glasses would like us to believe. I wasn’t buying the Steve Preece koolaid on the pregame show yesterday. Yeah, it’s a bad loss. But there’s going to be growing pains this year. Let’s see how they respond: I certainly don’t want to gain the reputation of a fan base like Michigan who gives a coach five games to turn around a program and then wants him out. There’s altogether too much unrealistic expectation in this thread right now, AT THIS TIME. If we still look like this in a couple seasons, then that’s a different subject altogether.

A bit surprised but the Husker press hasn’t killed Opie like they did last week in their loss to Illinois. They’re saying that at least the game with Wisky was competitive. I guess the 70 points hung on them a few years back has left a deep scar. They’ve given up.
Think Bike Mike has a losing season when things are all said and done. He could rally to 6-6 but he’ll figure out a way to eff up.

Candidly I think going with a current non D1 coach or coordinator in the future may be the next best thing to Frost. Hard to find the next Chipster but they’re out there. Tremendous tradition at Nebraska and I wish we had your resources but the constant coaching changes from unrealistic expectations has made Lincoln a much tougher sell. Riley is actually a good fit for Huskerland except he sucks as a football coach. Unfortunately for you guys it won’t get any better until you make ANOTHER change. I called that right after the missed FG knowing Wisky still had all 3 timeouts and RiLLLLey got blasted after throwing on 3rd down last week. I knew they would run it 3 straight times. Different situation though as Illinois had no timeouts last week. Dumb move by RiLLLLey. As someone stated last week, it ain’t over until the clock is at :00 with a Banker defense. In both situations all Nebby had to do was pick up ONE first down and the game is over. Fail. We’ve seen it how many times with a RiLLLLey led team?
Their next two are going to be tough as well. at Minnesota and home vs Northwestern. Could RiLLLLey’s best team ever be 2-6 going into their pillow fight on Halloween against Perdue????

I still consider CO and WSU bottom feeders (along with OSU), though they are getting better. Oregon could become a bottom feeder at this rate.
Realistically, I think we need to start bracing ourselves as fans (I understand what I’m seeing as a transition), the team could very easily lose to Wazzu and Colorado and go 2-10. I don’t see a definite win on the schedule based on what I’ve seen so far.
If we play like we did against Stanford, we win yesterday and for the next two weeks. If we play like we did yesterday, we go 0-12.
I did like that MM came in and was immediately respected by Zony’s D. And then he looked a little rusty, but ready to play… and progressing down the field where SC was stalled all day.

I actually feel sorry for Anderson and staff here. I really feel it is not so much the coaching but the ingrediates given to work with. They have been handed a pile of crap from Riley and everyone is expecting chocolate cake from it. I think they are doing the only thing they can do… bring in a new system and try like hell to recruit new actual D1 players. This game was the worst yet. By-weeks for a young over-all untalented team can cut both ways. Having OSU come out this year kicking ass is a great fantasy but has no base in reality.
Agree … I think Tinkle is a good coach but he just had so little to work with. Ya had to feel for him struggling thru that. GA the same. Riley with his mediocre recruiting…and he left no experienced QB …
I think there will be some further roster attrition after the season. It’s been the same kids making mistakes. Some are just not D1 caliber. I would rather have someone recruited to the scheme than trying to mold this kids to fit. Square peg, round hole.
I hope Wallace and Thompson can make immediate impacts on defense next year. Especially with wallaces size and athleticism

Agreed on the same guys making mistakes. Decoud seems decent and Strong occasionally but the rest are D2, particularly Scott and Noland-Lewis. GA actually took the Scott down to LA for PAC 12 press day. I guess it was more about the fact that he’s a senior since his middle name is Toast.

I don’t know what Baldwin was talking about? Why would he talk up our offense so much? 7 points against a bad az defense. By design it seemed we were having Collins roll out and throw on the run, why is that?! You lose so much accuracy throwing while moving and I thought our offensive line was giving him a decent pocket to pass in(when we weren’t rolling him out). McMaryion’s passing reminds me a lot of Mannion in that he throws the ball 100 mph without a lot of accuracy. Collins going 8 of 24 against this defense vs his game against Stanford is night and day difference. I just hope he can figure his shit out
Agreed. I don’t understand why we have Collins throwing a lot, specifically deep balls on 1st down. We need to keep running with misdirection plays and quick bubble screens. Just seems like Baldwin is not working to the strengths of his offense sometimes.
It’s not like storm looked bad either. He needed a lot more carries, but we were playing catch up all game. I guess that’s what happens when we have 52 freshman on a roster though. also Larry Scott has been getting worked recently. Not something I’d expect from our senior corner
Yep. Scott has been getting torched. DeCoud is our #1 guy and looks solid… Not surprised since he’s a GA recruit.
I like decouds size a lot as well. If Wallace could somehow replace Scott at corner next year we could have a very big and fast secondary

Did anyone else think the 3 in a row to Nall was odd play calling? I like the mentality behind it, but it seemed predictable.
Use it a few times and then shake it up, catch em expecting it. Good coaches play games that way.

Yeah, its really hard to say. Many kids go there just because its Usc. Because many of them come from So Cal and can stay close to home. However, if there is just one of those kids who might have been thinking of wavering his commitment and then this, it just might open the door a crack. It is still up to the staff to sell them on us.
As much as I think the dude’s a joke, I wish him well in getting his stuff together. Maybe this is the root of all that makes us see him as such a manipulative flake. If that’s true, he could come back and be a decent coach for once.

What I don’t get is that we didn’t take the ball at Zony. We had two weeks to prepare for them. One of those weeks we got to see how the power run just ground them to a pulp. And we come out all finesse? But when we go pistol with Nall at the single wing, we grind them to a pulp… then we go finesse just long enough to get our P back on the field?
It’s like we would give them a good solid punch in the mouth then step back and wait for them to recover. You’re not going to fool or out-finesse a RichRod team. But you can push them around if you just choose to do so. Why didn’t we choose that? It’s not like we didn’t prove we couldn’t when we tried.
There’s a reason we were projected to win 4 games this season by Vegas.
I thought the very best case scenario had us finishing with 6 wins and one of the worst possible tier bowl games. That doesn’t look to be happening, but the program had bottomed out and is now building the foundation to ascend again.
Not bad timing because the North is starting to look weak compared to the South. Peaking in the next few years could be very advantageous to the team!

Sarkisian was not in attendance at the Trojans’ practice on Sunday afternoon. A player told ESPN via text that Sarkisian “showed up lit to meetings again today.”
Sarkisian showed up Sunday morning at USC and “he appeared not normal” and then was told to leave, another source told ESPN. “They wouldn’t let him come to practice,” a source said.
Sarkisian was also suspected by his staff to be under the influence during USC’s 42-14 win over Arizona State on Sept. 26, though athletic director Pat Haden was apparently unaware.

This if going to be an unpopular statement, but I think we would probably have won one more game with Riley at the helm. Why? Seth Collins wouldn’t be the QB, more designed run plays with Nall and Woods and TE wrinkles. Our offense is shit! Seth Collins can’t throw for shit. He’s worse than Del Rio.

Del Rio would likely have had many more turnovers than Collins has had thus far, and Riley’s unwillingness to commit to the run is unquestionable.

This spread offense is finesse and kind of lame, but GA said he wants a power game, too, so let’s wait and see. It seems like he knows when to mix things up. Garrettson isn’t a typical spread QB, so I think he wants to throw it, run it, and spread it ideally. Garrettson looks like a QB who can make at least the basic throws, which is all the Beavs need.
I agree with you there, and hope you are right! Thing one I notice we do differently than a lot of spread teams is the holding on the outside by our receivers. The quacks do it all game to crest space and holes and we don’t use that technique…

Better stable of running backs, now that Peko is playing the Dline should be “bigger and better”. The receivers should be considerably better now that they have been playing a few years. On paper the team is better than last year. Minus the QB situation, at least The Statue could accurately throw the ball.

Terron Ward is playing for the Falcons and he’s doing alright (and I always thought he was better than Woods). I’d call the RB being better a wash at best. The receiving core added Paul Lucas. But lost Richard Mullaney. Unless I’m forgetting someone, I’d take Mullaney and his experience over Lucas. Lucas may turn out better in the long run.
In the end you seem to be lost on the fact that 52 of the 85 players on the roster are true or redshirt freshman. Experience goes a long ways. And right now this team lacks game experience. And the ones that don’t are adapting to a new system. I’ll admit I thought they’d be farther along than they currently are. But even with RiLLLLey still here, this team would still be 2-3 at best right now. Did you forget about Banker? Have you seen their 4 losses this season? And they have more experienced players? You think Banker would do a better job than Sitake with this same group? I’m really at a loss for words right now
Not disagreeing on Banker I made reference to Sitake being Banker 2.0. The WR, should be way further along from last year. What about or Dline and Oline? Seems like we should have more protection for the QB. I’m not impressed with all the hype Anderson was getting. We weren’t even competitive on Saturday. Yes, all the freshmen have a lot to do with it but it’s not like we have freshmen playing every single position on the field at the same time. I’m sure in 3 years Andersons’ team will be clicking on all cylinders. I just don’t see any adjustments for the type of players he has on the field. Think of it this way. Peko can easily be double teamed and negated because the other 2 D lineman aren’t D1 caliber players or they lack enough experience. Thus he is negated out of most plays. Why throw to Treston DeCoud’s side of the field when you can torch Larry Scott all day? I’m not saying this is the case every play, but a good coach can see this and will game plan accordingly. Is the jury still out on GA? Of course. But with what he was given to work with this year, he gets a pass with me. There is a serious lack of talent on both sides of the ball. The O line is garbage with the exception of Seumalo (sic). The D line is garbage minus Peko and Grimble. I’d really like to see both of them on field at the same time if they aren’t being utilized that way. LB’s are garbage possibly minus Mageo. DB’s garbage with the exception of DeCoud. WR core is a mess. Bolden has the potential but seems to be a headcase. Villamin is probably the best we have but even he isn’t all world. I have seen nothing out of any of the others to prove otherwise. TE’s are non existent because we have a true frosh QB that doesn’t have the experience and can’t make routine throws and his O line is shit. And don’t even get me started on special teams. This team is just bad. Due to an overall lack of experience and talent. 52 of 85 are freshman. Will some of them get better, yes. Some of them also won’t because (Angry’s words not mine) they were low hanging fruit to begin with. You can’t polish a turd. Like I stated it’s going to take a few recruiting cycles for GA and staff to get some players in here

Not sure where the idea that Del Rio couldn’t throw the ball is coming from. He could throw the ball better than anyone currently on the roster (though he definitely didn’t have the arm strength and accuracy that Mannion did). He simply couldn’t run the read option effectively, so he didn’t have a place in the current system. If he was still here (along with Riley and Mullaney), I feel like we would be watching a 2005 Matt Moore-type performance: lots of poor decisions leading to many turnovers. With a less talented roster than the 2005 Beavers, they’d have won a max of 4 games.
With Riley still here, I feel like we would finish with a similar record to the 4-8 I have a feeling we’ll finish this year with. The big difference, however, is the feeling about those 4-8 seasons. With Riley still at the helm, I don’t think there would be much to be optimistic about for the upcoming seasons. We finish 4-8 this season under Anderson, the future just feels….brighter. The incoming recruiting class should be strong, we’ll be more familiar with the new offensive/defensive schemes, and the new coaching staff just seems to bring more energy and desire to win with them. Even if I’m not a big fan of the offense switching to the spread and read-option, I know we will look better going forward as we bring in the right personnel to run it correctly.

The read option/single wing won’t be a staple once we get the personnel and/or experience in place for a power set. The difference between what we see now and what we want to be (according to what I hear from our coach) is the difference between Urban Meyer’s Florida offense and his tOSU offense. You’ll notice he now has RBs who produce, run in the interior and play on Sundays. One has to wonder (not much) if the brilliance of last year’s offense went to Houston. But his team remains a power team which will be effective for years.
All the good defenders are going to play offense in college now that the gadget offense rules. Players deemed not good enough for offense in a pro set… or players rated as better defenders than they are on O are flocking to the offense. This leaves a dearth of skill on the defensive side. And we’re lower on the totem pole in terms of who we have gathered in years past as a result of some really poor player evaluations.
They try hard, but hug and release is a Banker ideal. The longer, faster athletic types who are considered utility players but who just love to play football are who we are now getting. They will come to school and be placed where they fit and developed into that position. That’s how Sitake did it at Utah. That’s how he’ll do it here.
There won’t be any Remmers projects on the O side except at TE/HB/FB where those types can develop over time. Those type of projects will most likely start on the D and develop into the tall backers we see roaming around at Utah right now.
Add them to some rangy, ridiculously athletic DBs, and we have a recipe for some scary D in a couple years. But Whiskey is right. We may look sound at the point of attack, but the skill in tackling exposes the truth. Our ends are weak. Our DBs are small and/or slow. Our LBs are two deep… not four wide and two deep… just two deep.
They’re in the right places most of the time. They just can’t finish what they start and end up in chase mode for most of the game as a result.

Interesting thought. Defense in general seems to be played pretty poorly, and I don’t think its just the direct effect spread and/or read option offenses; the quality of defensive play is down.
And agree with other comments above; these offenses get boring, even when they work. Games these days now regularly top 50 points, and 500+ yards offense is not uncommon. Combine that with declining defense, and the games start to feel a bit like an NBA all-star game or an NFL pro bowl.
I really hope Andersen does evolve to a power running team and your example of the contrast of Florida/tOSU is correct. I know he’s telling OLine recruits that is where he’s going.

I actually feel like there has been a slight defensive renaissance this year. Seems like the up-tempo, spread stuff has plateaued. Not that it will disappear, but not represent quite the competitive advantage for offenses that it did in previous years.
Interesting comment, particularly about Herman. One note, Whittingham is the one finding the best fit for an athlete at Utah, not Sitake. Hopefully Whittingham’s skill at that rubbed off on Andersen and Sitake. Not sure Sitake is particularly savvy, though.
I’m looking at the position groups Sitake coached before and while he was DC. You could see their recruits get longer, faster and more athletic while they also were not exactly highly rated at any given position, if even at the position they ended up playing under him. And there are some gems coming to OSU because so did he. Utah fans are not happy about it one bit either. That game will be ugly this year.
I’m not saying that’s not what Whitt told him to do. But I think it’s apparent by who we’re recruiting that’s what has been learned by our coaches.

As far as Xs and Os, I’ve recently been hearing fans being happier with the new DC than Sitake – including me. Though my football opinions are worth about as much as Angry charges to read his columns.
And the idea isn’t that LDR can’t throw the ball. He probably has better pace than Mannion ever had. What he doesn’t have is the ability to hit the broad side of a barn. I’m not saying we have anything different right now. But that plus immobility equals useless in our new system.

The article is spot on but the posters – most of them – are still in denial. They keep mentioning recruiting is the issue although they’ve had some pretty good classes. Nebraska’s the next Texas.

Mike Riley, Nebraska — Riley was supposed to bring calm to the post-Pelini storm with a seasoned coaching staff and a more composed team attitude. So far, his team is second in the nation in penalties — alternating between 1st and 2nd place with Bowling Green. Additionally, some questionable coaching calls have contributed to at least two of Nebraska’s four losses.
