As noted throughout the game thread, Mitchell showed his warts and is at best a backup. Seth Collins is a better option that Mitchell. McMaryion threw one nice ball, then a first down that was dropped. Verdict is still out on him, but it seems like most fans are trending toward being on the same page: that we have no viable D1 QB on this roster (not factoring in Garretson, who we all hope is the savior).

Are we all on the same page with the QBs finally? I’ve seen enough Mitchell to know Collins is better. I’d like to see MM — not because I love him, he probably stinks — but rather to just settle it one way or another, just like with Mitchell. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or two of these QBs transfer. GA should be recruiting another QB hard, yet he seems content with Moran. If Garretson is the QB next year, and he gets injured, then what? GA’s biggest problem, throughout his career, has been handling QBs, and I don’t like where things are going on that front. I feel he should be recruiting a JC or a highly rated prep right now (in addition to Moran).

The defense regressed, but some of that was the offense was once again off the field too fast. Football requires the units to be in sync, else things fall apart fast. GA is recruiting heavily on D, and for good reason. There should be a big improvement by year 3 on D, but even next year with all the talent he’s recruiting on that side.

Overall talent is an issue. Recruiting has been good this year, but it’s stalled lately. Word is some of these guys will go on missions so won’t count against this class. That’s good, because 0-star recruits from Oregon who hold offers from Wyoming and Portland State aren’t going to get the “impatient” Gary Andersen where he wants to be.

Sign of coaching problem: losing close games due to boneheaded decisions (time management, wrong personnel, etc).

Sign of talent problem: getting consistently blown out and just unable to compete.

Beavs have a talent problem. The coaches (Baldwin/GA on special teams) aren’t helping — they don’t put players in best position to succeed nor do they play call to the personnel they have, but rather to personnel they wish they had.

The worst part of Beaver football this year has been the lack of progress. If each week we saw some improvement or an overall direction, it would be easy to stomach what is going on, but the lack of progress has everyone disengaged. I think we’re all basically done caring or watching and all looking forward to hoops. This looks like a 3 year rebuild. Next year will be bad, too, as all these new recruits (who are better than Riley’s no doubt) have to take their lumps and learn. So year 3 is when we see better things. It’s going to suck. JC recruits could help. If I had one piece of advice for GA: recruit JC harder, get another QB, and encourage as much attrition as you can.

  1. “Sign of coaching problem: losing close games due to boneheaded decisions (time management, wrong personnel, etc).

Sign of talent problem: getting consistently blown out and just unable to compete.”

Very appropriate with regards to the OSU situation.

  2. Good summary and write up, except that I’ll always be watching and caring. And the best sports time of the year is college football and basketball overlap.

  3. I resonate a lot with this post. It’s tough to watch your team just get beasted and feasted on. The Pac-12 is full of sharks and we’re the bloody fish right now. For me, the season ended with the Colorado game. Since then, it’s been basketball season. Thank goodness our hoops team is in year 2.

It’s really tough when they cannot put points on the board at all. The offense is so inept at this point because if the defense makes ANY mistakes, they pay dearly for it. How many times have we seen teams double up on the scoreboard? Or the defense will make a good stop, offense goes 3 and out or turns it over and now that same tired defense gives up plays and points.

    • Remember yesterday when you said “remember that guy who said backups are never better? Mitchell was 7 and MM was 6. Now they’re 1 and 2. Oops.”

Now today you agree with me? Been a long time coming angry. Glad to have you aboard.

        • I wonder what we’d be talking about this year if Riley was still here. If anyone even cared about football at this point, I think it would be how dumb a decision it was for Riley to replace Del Rio after two series in the Michigan game. And then we’d talk about what a waste of another year it was just throwing Pensyl out there time and again.

Then someone would suggest that maybe one of the six other QBs on the roster might deserve to get a look. And some moron would go after him with dumb statements like, “I’m sure you know better than coaches who get paid millions of dollars,” just for suggesting it.

We’d also be wondering why Willis never ever plays and why Nall was fourth on the depth chart as a TE and also never playing… being attacked for such ideas by same moron above with the same stale illogic.

          • good question Jack. My guess is we would have lost either the Weber or San Jose game, but somewhere along the line–Riley being Riley–the Beavs would have won a game. Probably the Colorado game. The passing game would have been much more effective, with Del Rio linking up with Mullaney, but the defensive side of things would probably have been much like we’ve seen. I mean, how could it have been otherwise losing 9 starters. At the end of last season before Riley left I believed we were facing a four win season. By the way, whatever happened to Pennsyl

      • Did thatguy say that yesterday? I’m not going to sift through 500 comments of game thread to see if he did. But I also don’t see where he’s talking about that in this comment. And I don’t know why you need confirmation from angry about it.

I also don’t know what there is to agree with you. This is what you have put out there:
        1. SC will start.
        2. 100% guarantee MM will never start for OSU.
        3. NM will never see the field.

So agree? Those are more statements of fact than opinions. What’s to agree?

Anyway, I’m glad you’re glad thatguy is on board with you. But you should know, if he did say that yesterday, both you and he are wrong. MM was 7, and NM was “top three in no order.”

  4. I didn’t watch more than one half of the UCLA game. I’ll wait to watch it on the pac12 60 minute thing. However, I have to say that I HAVE seen progress in individuals. I think the overall tackling fundamentals are better team wide than Ive seen in years. Guys actually wrapping up.

I was at the Colorado game, 11th row up from the field on the 30. What I noticed was how small (and young) everyone looked in person vs watching on TV. It was strange at first.

We’ve all said over and over, but that game really brought home to me how young this team is. I think the entire program just needs to mature, and that much is inevitable, regardless of what we do at QB.

I’m in it for the long haul. I don’t have a choice. I’m a Beav. That will never change.

    • “I’m in it for the long haul. I don’t have a choice. I’m a Beav. That will never change.”

Good for you, Orange; me as well — and have been for a long time. My fraternity mug says “Oregon State College.” I loved to watch Ted Bates play defensive end.

Oregon State is currently #102 and is playing the #10 toughest schedule in the country.

  6. The Oakland Raiders have turned the corner with Carr at QB. Just amazing how when looking around the NFL or the PAC12 the teams at the top all have good to great QB play, and the teams that turn the corner do so under the strength of QB play. It’s such a problem for the Beavs. Captain obvious, I know, but it’s amazing how many other flaws resolve with good/great QB play.

It’s amazing GA isn’t going after QBs harder. As I have said before, the lack of QB is the only way I see the GA era fail.

    • who says he isn’t? (that wasn’t rhetorical, do you have an inside track on who is or isn’t being recruited at the position). Maybe no one is really interested in the job seeing how its been handled this year.

For the record I’m still a SC supporter. I believe if GA makes him the starter after the first game, sticks with him and keeps the kid happy, we are further along at this point in the season than we are now. (this takes for granted that the injury is equal parts actual injury and some form of discipline)

  7. I am going to point out the elephant in the room: it’s going to take longer to see progress in the Pac-12 just in terms of how many teams are good. Even Colorado, who I consider #11 right now, has fight and a pulse, and are starting to become competitive. This isn’t the Big Ten where you can drop in a few recruits and beat up Purdue, Indiana, Maryland and Rutgers, this is the hardest conference to make headway in. Yes. Yesterday was bad and a regression. But maybe some of the reason we aren’t seeing progress faster is just because the hill to climb in the Pac-12 is so much steeper. Agree about the quarterback situation, but give it time. GA pretty much came into this year with cupboard that was mostly bare.

  8. I think Garrettson will help next year, not saying he is a stud but he showed an ability to complete about 60% of passes at Utah State. I think he’d be a steady player at the position which would likely have been enough to have beat Colorado and kept us in some other games were maybe another victory or 2 could have been stolen. Its amazing the difference a QB can make.

I agree on the 3 year rebuild but am far from hopeless when it comes to 2016.

Do agree on hitting the JCs harder than they seem to be doing and maybe going after a few 5th year senior transfers might be smart as well but I’m not ready to throw away 2016.

  9. Our team is a joke. 1 out of every 2-3 players on this team shouldn’t be in the pac12. Mike Riley is a douche. Thank god our basketball team is gonna be decent. This is embarrassing to watch in all honesty.

  10. I agree with a lot of what is said here. The qb situation is terrible. Like angry, I’d like to see MMcM have sustained playing time to see how he functions in “full time” mode. I also believe, like a lot of us, the GA needs to be recruiting a decent D1 qb damned soon.

Right now the team is regressing, certainly so for the offense and I agree we are better with Collins. Injuries are a big factor, too.

I’m not at all impressed with Baldwin’s play calling it seems so haphazard most of the time, like there isn’t really a plan.

Is Gary Crowton still “consulting” the offense? If so, maybe it’s time to put him upstairs during the game and show Baldwin the way out.

    • I’m not at all impressed with Baldwin’s play calling it seems so haphazard most of the time, like there isn’t really a plan.

It seems haphazard because we have no QB. QB is, obviously, the most important position on the field. Look at Whoregon without Vernon Adams, then with Vernon Adams. With him, the offense works and the play calling looks better. Without him, it looks like Frost is calling plays by throwing a dart.

A QB makes everybody look smarter, unfortunately, we don’t have one yet.

  11. Utah St. became the dominant team in the WAC in GA’s 4th year. I don’t really know how to compare that to the P-12. I don’t think he was at Wisconsin long enough to measure. I will say that even his 4-8 teams at Utah St. were competitive against Power 5 teams in the non-conference schedule, so they rose to the occassion. The only team they were not competitive against was Boise St. when the Broncos were still in the WAC. Not much to do now, but hope the same thing holds true to form, but it’s going to be a long three or four years.

  12. FROM WILL”S DAD:

“The little lady, Wilma, and me have a couple of questions for ya’ll. What’s the name of that junior college outside of Corvallis, Lyle Burton (?) or some such and do they have a football team? Thanky”

    • I think the chances were low on picking him up, no matter how bad the team is playing. But your right, I’m afraid that we will lose a few guys, unless they were sold on starting right away.

    • Big loss. But if we’re being optimistic, we have Paul Lucas on the roster already and Trevon Bradford coming in next year, along with numerous other running back recruits so it’s not exactly a position of major need. Mostly sucks because Moran would’ve been a much more valuable recruit if he had brought the good guys along with him. Now he’s just a project QB recruit.

    • There’s no way you can possibly know that he decommitted because of Oregon State’s poor play. For all we know, he might just want to play with N’keal Harry at ASU instead.

      • A few weeks ago I was saying a team source had the Beav’s chances as “Very good”, but last 2 weeks I was predicting ASU, basically ever since Harry committed there. They were all flashing ASU “shocker” signs in a group photo when Harry committed. Seemed pretty clear at that point he wouldn’t be a beaver.

Not sure why an offensive player would choose OSU at this point, if they have the option to play at any other Pac-12 school. Beavs haven’t shown anything this year to give recruits confidence next year will be better. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trayveon Bradford get poached. Teams will come knocking and just point to stats from this year. OSU ranks 115th nationally in passing yards, 118th nationally in total offensive yards and 120th in total pts. Out of 128 teams.

  13. I haven’t watched the past few games, but definitely sounds troubling that little to no progress is being made. Not sure where this is headed.

While I hate when teams have to rely heavily on JC recruits, in this case I feel it may be warranted. Seems like they need DL recruits. I guess they have a bunch of O linemen, but will they develop? And a quick fix is needed for next year at QB. Not sure if that is Garretson, but seems a little sketchy relying upon an undersized transfer from Utah State.

    • Most notably is how the game is 4 quarters instead of two halves now. It was odd when it was 2nd quarter with 10 on the clock, I thought it was halftime. I was like “I just got here!” I was kinda disappointed with myself since I’m always on top of rules changes (I mentioned it here earlier this summer). But in action it shocks you a bit.

      • I was caught on that too. But I was aware of the rule change and talking about it… before I was speaking aloud in wonderment about what was going on… then catching myself.

  14. 77 years since Kristallnacht.

There is no in-between. There is good and evil… even if I know both are misidentified by morons most of the time.

There is a beauty in life. It has nothing to do with what you imagine is safety or security or anything you’re inclined to be leveraged by. It has to do with your freedom. If you have it, you are content.

          • I could also never sing like Ella, regardless of the practice. I could never be an Olympic sprinter or NBA basketball player either. That doesn’t mean, though, that I can’t enjoy what meager abilities that I have.

          • marcdog, but you could play scales, assuming you don’t have any physical deformities in the hand or fingers.

i really don’t like the scale wanker guitarists. You can always spot them easily because they play the typical alpha, beta, epsilom scale block patters on the fretboard and also rarely string skip (i.e. they play guitar just like they practice scales, which usually means no string skips).

Nice chord work from Joe Pass, though. Just not a fan of scale based lead at all. Ella doesn’t look or sound too into that performance.

          • And sure enough: “Pass’ father recognized early that his son had “a little something happening” and pushed him constantly to pick up tunes by ear, play pieces not written specifically for the instrument, practice scales and not to “leave any spaces” – that is, to fill in the sonic space between the notes of the melody.”

Definitely a scale based player. Spot them a mile away. I looked that up because he has the Berkley School of music sound and was wondering if he went to music school.

Another tell tale sign of the scale players is you can’t hum the melody of the lead. Good melody has leaps (i.e. string skipping on a guitar). It’s usually moderate tempo as to allow notes to settle in/register. The mind can’t process above 16th notes easily.

          • You only asked questions, so I don’t know your take. But the idea Bob Mould is even remotely good is laughable at best. He rarely played on tempo or in tune with his band mates. And his “solos” were memorable enough to make me think Gary Richrath was a virtuoso.

I know you harken back to the haunting sounds of the blues. I respect that. But who do you find compelling in the last 30 years?

          • Bob Mould played in time (as all hardcore rooted bands must). In fact, the entire genre is based on (a) fast and (b) in time.

He’s ranked 48th on Spins top 100 guitarists. I think Rolling Stone once had him ranked. He’s no slouch. He’s no virtuoso. He’s somewhere in between, but he plays with spirit and doesn’t use basic block scale patterns. He also wrote great songs, so there is that.

But to compare Joe Pass to Bob Mould is weird. Totally different style. Joe Pass is noodling on scales. His chord work is nice, the passages in between are hackneyed scale work that a competent player could do with about 50-100hrs of practice (i.e. dependent on their natural ability and starting point). Same as post 60s electric blues players who play pentatonic runs ala Hendrix — sounds hard, right? It takes about 10hrs of practice. You literally slide the finger up and hammer on a pentatonic chord shape. These are all well known tricks and “go to” guitar methods. Same with the jazz scales (usually modes, which are scales based off a degree other than the tonic).

Total fretboard mastery to play all the modes etc in every position would take years. But if you just want to play the song above, you’re looking about a 50hr investment as a beginner. I don’t equate fretboard mastery with great guitarist, tho. There are hacks on youtube who have mastered the fretboard, scales, and modes, and they still can’t play anything remotely musical.

I don’t think this guy is a bad guitarist, btw. It’s just if you play the instrument you can see right through those hackneyed scale patterns and it makes you roll the eyes…not much creativity there.

          • Forgot to answer the 2nd half of that question. Compelling as in what? I need that defined. If you mean virtuosos, it would be a pretty typical list you see everywhere. If you mean individuality/creativity, that would be a separate list, and I’d have go through my record collection and pick out the guys. To me guitar has two components: (1) technical and (2) creative. The creative is more important because without it you get the god forsaken noodler. Technique matters to a point (like the Bob Mould level technique is fine) …gotta be able to play that competently, but after that, it is all about creativity. There are guys who can play circles around Jimi Hendrix, technically speaking, but they lack any creativity or musicality (e.g. phrasing, feel, etc). Thus, they are unknown wankers. They are all over youtube wanking it up. If you asked them to write a musical song they wouldn’t know where to start. If you asked them to play the Mixolydian mode in 15 different positions they’re rattle it over in 60 seconds. Is that music? Not to me. It’s noodling and wankery that sounds like shit.

            Different strokes, I guess.

BTW, most “virtuosos” are notorious for their rigid practicing. It’s not as if people come out of the womb shredding or writing sonatas. Even the Mozarts of the world weren’t as natural as people believe and required a lot of practice (took him 10 years one he began playing to produce his first work). I encourage Marcdog (and anyone else) to practice if he wants to noodle like that.

          • I appreciate the work done by all, even those I dislike, to be good or great among professionals within their profession. Their reward is appreciation. But in art that can be pop rule.

I believe you’ve listened to HD. I like many of their songs. But Mould’s play makes me sound great. His solo ventures are his best work as a player by far. I find it extremely disingenuous of critics to say those albums are crap while his earlier work was scribble at best. He was a product of a whole bigger than himself. I’ve seen it with many bands. It just kinda worked with that group for a while… along with extreme college radio pop play. There are many groups during that span who were better than their sums.

I can say without a doubt James Iha is a much much better guitar than Mould… much much better. And I hate every song ever created by SP while liking many by HD… every song ever. That is not hyperbole. Mould is not in time and often out of tune. If that is brilliance or some semblance of such, there are too many genius guitars in this world.

What Mould did have was a sound and feel which fit his niche, a niche he created. He was genius within that niche. He was nothing else. I highly doubt he could play Asturias, if he could a simple tonality in G… 7?

When I say he was off time, it was as if his amp was out of phase intentionally all the time. That’s how egregious his work is to my ear. Perhaps he was in tune, but being off time makes him off tune to my ear. That is not genius. That’s thoughless.

I find little sense in your Jimi reference.

Practice would make anyone better. Practice makes the greats better. I don’t understand that mention either.

          • Well, every guitarist is out of tune. It’s actually mathematically impossible to have perfect intonation on a guitar. You can get the open strings tuned perfectly, but once you fret you shorten the string, and by definition that will change the pitch (shortening the string makes the pitch flat on whatever note is fretted). So, I really hate criticism that “x plays out of tune”. EVERYONE does. Zero exceptions. Even fretless instruments have that problem. It’s a problem of strings and bridges/saddles. It’s a mathematical inevitability.

Secondly, he plays in tune enough. Nobody hears differences under 1/3 a semitone off pitch, except those with perfect pitch. Mould is in the realm of normal/good pitch. Maybe a song here or there is off (I’m not going to go through their vast catalog looking for > 1/3 off notes). If he was greatly off pitch consistently, he wouldn’t be a famous and influential musician. People don’t want to hear off pitch, at least in western music. Now if you get into World music, those micro-pitches aren’t even considered off pitch, so that’s another reality all together. Pitch as you are defining it is very Western and not absolute.

James Iha…he wrote some pretty melodies for Smashing Pumpkins. Not good guitarist, imo. Very average. Above average song-writer in terms of melody, but poor lyricist.

What Mould did have was a sound and feel which fit his niche, a niche he created. He was genius within that niche. He was nothing else. I highly doubt he could play Asturias, if he could a simple tonality in G… 7?

Does he need to be anything else? Genius or ability aren’t defined by playing someone else’s music or difficult pieces. It’s actually the opposite, imo. Creating something great out of nothing. It doesn’t have to be complex. There is a bad association with “complex” = “great”. Really bad bands like Dream Theater get by on that. “We play poly rhythms and 32nd notes” and the crowd oohs and aahs. Poor Bob Mould just strums G to C and it sounds better, because he understands…musicality. Complex music has its place for sure. I like a lot of classical music, etc. But complex doesn’t = great. Just like Riley’s complex playbook blew for QBs. lol

When I say he was off time, it was as if his amp was out of phase intentionally all the time. That’s how egregious his work is to my ear. Perhaps he was in tune, but being off time makes him off tune to my ear. That is not genius. That’s thoughless.

I’d have to hear an example of this out of time issue. Phase would not make something out of time, but instead it would weaken certain frequencies as you had phase cancellation. Something like a flanger produces something similar phase, but again, to most ears that won’t sound out of time. Reverb could make it sound out of time if the delay is long enough, but most HD albums are close mic’d with almost no reverb. Again, I’d have to hear the song that’s out of time to comment on it. I’ve listened to a lot of HD records and never heard that.

BTW, I think Joe Pass is a good guitarist. Of course he is good. But cliche/obvious scale licks between chords always turn me off because it is hackneyed. You can turn on youtube and find a lot of guys doing those same licks. Just research the Alpha, Beta, Delta, Epsilon, etc box patterns. Research modes. Joe Pass has great fretboard mastery. That’s what I give him. He has nice sense of chords and moving them cleanly. His runs are cliche, though, and they’re non musical.

My opinion of course. It’s known that not everyone hears music the same.

          • Yes… I get it. There is no such thing as a circle. So why compare a triangle to a trapezoid when talking about an oval?

Agreed… Dream Theater sucks also. And I don’t say that in a SP way where I hate every bit of their musical being but understand they technically play precise music. I mean they suck.

          • It’s funny, the difference between technical expertise and musicality. Not that they’re mutually exclusive. You have to have some idea what’s going on musically so you can communicate with other musicians. But to me the bottom line is whether the song is good or not.

Take a guy like Dimebag for example. Self taught, no real musical knowledge to speak of. But his riffs and leads and ability to contribute to the song writing process were amazing.

Then there are guys like Page Hamilton who studied jazz at Manhattan School of Music. He knows exactly what’s going on at all times and makes a conscious decision to make his music sound heavy and percussive and crazy sounding at times.

Musical knowledge and it’s relationship to “musical” music is a strange thing. I’ve joined bands where the guy before me was a way better guitar player, yet the band sounded like shit and the songs written during that time were mostly scrapped after the fact. Being on time and having a feel for what’s best for the song usually go a lot farther in a band setting than constant weeeedly-weeeeedly-weeeeeeeeeee does.

Having killer guitar tone helps also :D .

          • Ug. I gotta be honest with you, I clicked on that video and listened to about 2 minutes and had to turn it off. Granted I’m a bit OCD and I like things with patterns and music with solid rhythms. That was impressive technical playing but fuck almighty it was like nails on a chalk board musically. None of it sounded like anything remotely resembling a song. It sounded like guitar falling down the stairs.

          • I agree, WFO. I actually studied theory for 3 years with a private teacher so I know quite a bit, but I never use it, and all the technical stuff I self-taught after the fact (he wanted to teach me that during our lessons, but I insisted on theory b/c I needed to know WHY certain things sounded good). Theory is fascinating, but if you use it to compose you’re doomed. It’s only useful after the fact as a masturbatory study. Sometimes if you’re composing and have a brain freeze theory can help. But using it to say “I’m playing Dm in the key of C so time for the Dorian mode noodle that I memorized”. F THAT. I can spot it a mile away.

            Musicality/phrasing/feel are huge.

You should check out some Husker Du, btw, since you like punk. They’re hardcore/punk/rock hybrids. Some people hate Mould’s voice, but if you can get past that they have some awesome songs and energy.

          • I like HD for some stuff. And I am being harsh on Mould for the wrong reasons as it relates to “what I like” versus what makes sense to my ear. The good that was created by them would not exist without Mould. I get that. And there would be no other musician who would step in and influence the chemistry in a more positive way, IMO. And by positive I mean product since the chemistry was more angst and infighting than it was buddy buddy.

But their early stuff seemed to lag for as powerful as it was supposed to be. What I recall is how Mould would mostly be just a hair behind the beat then catch it for a couple measures then get ahead before falling behind again. If that’s intentional, more power to him. It’s confusing to me. I think it’s frustrating because he does have some really brilliant moments. Some of the songs on New Day Rising are extremely complex, yet simple at the same time. That album and the fourth side of Zen are all I ever listen to of theirs anymore. And I have to be in an introspective mood for that.

I didn’t care for Flip Your Wig at all. It sounded like a mean drunk and a heroin addict yelling at each other. At least they kept it real. I would side with the addict when thinking of what made them good. The energy flowed off the percussion for me. Maybe that’s why I would get annoyed with Mould so much. It always seemed like Hart was in each song while Mould was constantly experimenting but rarely concluding anything. But on New Day it all seemed to come together as a whole. And only some of his riffs are stolen.

I suppose I allow Mould the person to influence what I think of his play. While irrational, I think I hear him being a jerk in much of his music. And that relly turns me off. But his last album did seem to lose that “edge” and was pretty enjoyable. It’s like he gave up being the mad scientist and just sat down and played music as an artist.

          • I actually like Warehouse a lot, which I think was their last or one of their last albums. They become almost pop at that point.

Celebrated summer is awesome. I’m working on a cover of it, actually. The guitar parts are surprisingly tricky at those speeds.

They definitely have some duds. I’m not saying they’re infallible. Just that I’d rather listen to them, warts and all, over a lot of the more technical/”skilled” musicianship out there. Though, as I said, I think Mould hit a point where he was technical enough. Like if you’re a 6/10 on guitar that’s good enough to do almost all you need to do.

          • I agree. Ceelbrated Summer is probably his best work on guitar. But it is that dichotomy of superb music and weird vocals. I can definitely see why some people can be turned off by the voice. But he does so well in I Apologize. So I don’t get it sometimes. My favorite on the album is Terms of Psychic Warfare.

I never owned Warehouse. So I’ve never given it a solid listen. I suppose I could go find it on YT tonight.

But I think you’re right about Mould and his constant experimentation. He should leave that stuff in practice and put the finished product on tape. I think the problem was that they cut so many first takes that it was essentially practice in itself.

          • Was Grant Hart on drums? I guess I can google it. lol
Don’t feel like. But I think he was drums not bass…either way, the drums always sounded more out of time than guitar. Like instead of the drummer laying down the beat he was trying to play along to the guitar. Very clear during the arpeggio section of Celebrated Summer. The drum hit comes in late.

But whatever, that is syncopation defined so…

          • Ha! Maybe I have it all backward. It just sounded like they were fishing a lot and some polish would help. I do remember sometimes Hart would up the tempo in the middle of the first or second verse, where it made no sense. Both of them did strange timing stuff on backing vocals as well.

And Norton was on bass. He was serviceable most times.

          • Having played in a band for years, I think when one guy goes out of time it isn’t necessarily a sign of bad musicianship many times they just get excited. Band is all about the push and pull and playing off one another, so if you sense one guy is getting into the music and pulling (this tends to happen during choruses and any build up), you should join him. Sometimes HD didn’t do this, and it is noticeable, but I don’t think it matters too much big picture. Ideally you hope the drummer is the one leading those tempo changes so everyone can follow him. If it’s coming from somewhere else everyone tries to match and it can fall apart, but that’s more common with amateurs who don’t practice. Like these guys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5NoXaSajq0

Hahahhahaha. I could not believe it when I saw that a few weeks ago.

    • The crowd I hung out with in the 80s/90s listened to a decent amount of Husker Du, so I’ve heard them in passing. I actually don’t mind Bob Mould’s voice. Give me a couple tracks to check out, I’ll give them another look.

  15. Joe Pass was a god. I has the pleasure of seeing him live several times. He was playing a small jazz club in Minneapolis. Towards the end of his second set, Chuck Mangione, who had played at Orchestra Hall that night, strolls in. His guitar player had studied with Joe and came up and did a duet. Next thing Chuck’s whole group is playing with Joe and they had a jam session that went one hour beyond the scheduled end of the gig. One of the coolest musical events I ever witnessed.

  16. Simply amazing what happened at Mizzou.

I think labor has found a voice. Ironically, the courts disagree that they are labor.

Hey US legal system… SUCK IT!!!

    • What if, just spit-balling here, football teams united within each respective state to make legislatures stop bilking their legacies for increasing amounts? Would the guys getting a free ride step up and help their fellow students (and future students)?

I think this is Pandora’s box being opened, for lack of a better metaphor.

      • Where does the untapped or unrealized power football (and hoops at some colleges) student athletes now know they have stop? Is there a dollar amount where the university will just tell them to go to hell?

        This is absolutely fascinating stuff.

      • What I’m trying to say is that power is shifting and being realized. I don’t care about the precipitant topic for this discussion. That players took the power they have always had and realized it, that’s what is absolutely fascinating here.

Make it about whatever hypothetical topic you want. The power itself is the interesting part.

        • What I’m trying to ask is why do you come back every 10 minutes to an hour and add-on continuously to your one sided discussion.

          (a) formulate all your thoughts in one post
          (b) practice

  17. Dayton Guyton dismissed?? That can’t be! Angry said he was good and Seth Collins was the one who’s the diva! This doesn’t make any sense! Can we please get a new thread bashing Collins again so we can get a return to normalcy? My head hurts ????

      • What’s dumb is writing numerous slanderous posts about a player on the team you’re supposed to be rooting for. He got this blog all hyped up to hate Collins over nothing. The kid got injured and an ENTIRE blog post was dedicated to bashing him and saying he wasn’t really hurt but was actually secretly suspended and on his last strike. It was and still is total bullshit. Couple that with the “secret source” (read: friend of Angrys) that reported Collins not wanting to do interviews as if he was saying “Fuck this stupid team” along with the hilariously off base post a few months back where his girlfriend got in on the Collins hate train. None of these have progressed past rumors and personal opinions into being factual in any way.

        • Somebody wrote something on the interwebs about someone else that may or may not be true! Oh the horror! Welcome to the year 2015

        • This is a hard one. I agree with what I think your premise is. But you fill it with a bunch of nonsense… and some of what I think you yourself are complaining about.

I need solid info the kid was actually hurt before I know anything. He was supposedly going for a MRI one day last week. That sort of disappeared into the ether. With all the rumors floating around (not just this blog), wouldn’t we hear how slanderous (libelous is correct… if harm can be proven) anything really is?

          • Yeah… can’t google that.

I’ve hyperextended three joints which weren’t fingers. One was a knee. I never ever felt any were worthy of a MRI… a week after the fact. I did have a partial dislocation of a shoulder, which still affects me now, where I probably should have had a visual done. But I kinda knew it at the time.

A hyperextension with a tear is not a hyperextension. And you know when something is torn.

          • And I never kept myself out of competition due to any one of them.

Of course, I never participated in any sport past the sixth grade. So there’s that.

          • Then again, a sprained ankle during a game was a quick retape away from getting back in the game way back when… in the fifth grade, of course.

        • He’s running a blog in his free time dedicated to the athletic programs of his alma mater, and his opinions on how to improve them. There’s very little media access to the team (at least compared to media standards of the old regime) so I imagine it’s difficult to keep it fresh as info is sparse. You have to speculate a bit (As the rest of the media is doing as well fyi) or there wouldn’t be much to write about. If angry’s opinions, perspective and the overall site wasn’t sometimes controversial, then it would be GoMightyCard or some other fan blog that nobody comments on (no offense Hank, love your work!)

Angry is right often (I think I read somewhere around 99% of the time.) Most of what we’ve been preaching about/asking for here the last 7 years is coming to fruition, and he/we’ve been ahead of the rest of the media. If you want a love your team no matter what atmosphere, then go to rivals or PO. If you’re just here to point out the 1 in every 20 (I mean 100) things angry isn’t spot on about, then you’re adding nothing to the conversation.

Angry doesn’t sway my feelings or opinions any direction, but I like reading his perspective. With the limited information available to me regarding STG: He has top notch athletic ability, great vision and is explosive when running with the ball. In the media interviews available, something has seemed off though. He comes off more cocky then strong confident. It’s a subtle nuance, but it makes a difference in how I feel about him. Pictures of with smiling with teammates throw picks, not cheering with the rest of his team, throwing fits in practice (mentioned by other journalists as well) make him look bad. Some of it could be taken out of context, but we’re not getting much info. I see his upside as a hybrid RB/Wr, but am not a fan of him at QB yet. If he makes a ridiculous leap in the offseason and proves me wrong, I have no problem with that and be happy to admit it. Has angry been too harsh and brought too much judgement about him at times, probably. But I think he’s also been backed into a corner by some of you other knuckleheads who throw MM in his face constantly, and then he lashes out.

          • I like that this blog is not just your usual biased shit. It just seems pretty obvious to me that Angry got so much flak about his MM prediction (rightfully so. It was based solely on 2 year-old high school film and offers to Ivy League schools) that he started rooting for Collins to fail just so he could shove it in our faces. Then he goes and says Collins is gonna get a teammate killed because he throws bad??? That’s not controversial, that’s just Skip Bayless stupid. At least I know the Skipster says most of his shit for ratings.

          • Hold on. SC throws hospital passes. That can’t be disputed. And there were never any predictions other than MM will eventually start… way back in June. That may still occur… not that it has anything to do with anything.

SC “hatred” is nothing more than observations of an extreme ego… combined with observations of an extreme ego. Egos diminish with maturity. Perhaps you have news that what has been publicly displayed is so?

    • Your head should hurt. Several screws loose up there and rattling around, injuring soft tissue.

Face it, Collins bozoed it up and needs a LOT of development to become what he was hyped to be — the prototype for GA’s system. He might have been, but so far is not.

And FYI, this blog is DEVOTED to bashing. You dont like it, get the fuck off….

      • what he was hyped to be — the prototype for GA’s system

He’s the best option of the three bad QBs we have, but I don’t think anyone really ever hyped him up as the prototype anything.

  18. Guyton out and Himphill now has a full ride offer for 2016. Silver lining

I think I’m going to go into hibernation mode for the rest of the football season. Bring on basketball….

  19. GA taking a CEO approach to the program. Essentially he’s going to “fire” the ones he doesn’t want and let anyone who wishes to leave to do so. He’s choosing to start from scratch.

Doing it this way clears out the bad fits fast. But it also takes a while to build back up. Puts a lot of pressure to hit home runs on the recruiting trail.

      • Thankfully, Riley did keep the APR at a decent level. It’s not like GA is coming in like CR did with the threat the program would be put on a shelf if he didn’t keep everyone and get them engaged in school again.

  20. The NCAA scholarships are only on a year to year basis. (Which is the major argument for abolishing anti transfer rules). So the school has no commitment to renew any scholarships for next year. Sounds like some people will have to pay their way to stay with the team. I.e. GA isn’t going to kick Biley dead weight off the team, he will just repurpose the existing scholarships to provide best possible use/value. This is perfectly ok to me, free captialism etc. I just wish there could be no penalties to those who wish to transfer due to losing scholarship.

    • Both Rosen and Mora bitched. Will the Beavs face those two in LA in 2017?
I sure hope so, and that the team uses this as motivation to give that pretty boy a game to remember, Mora too.

    • It was obvious the defense was doing something to interrupt the offense. Looks like Andersen found a way to push all the way up to the line but not cross it.

      • I have to agree. Their LG jumped about ten times and wasn’t called for it. Seceral of those had our D pointing at him. There were two times he had a hand in the dirt and picked it up when the rest of the line set.

It was just FF at that point (I was 1.5 hours behind… and still caught up in the beginning of the third… such an exciting sport… yup.

          • Whoa!!!!

I hope that doesn’t look like a star and crescent to anyone. Because if it did, I might have really stupid people knocking on my door within a week, asking to look at lots of stuff.

Terrorism isn’t your worry. Bombs aren’t your worry. Weapons of mass destruction (or WMD) are about as stupid as you can imagine… times ten. Sarin, bullets, fertilizer, stray fucks on or off meds… they want you to be afraid.

            And they win.

          • Maybe we could just have a discussion about how the House of Saud has always been ISIS?

Think about it. Videos of beheadings and corporal law like you know goes on in barbaric countries… but not in the country our POTUS holds hands with. That would be bad. Still might be fucking bad… given instability in a world we don’t belong.

NM… those vids were in that country.

Maybe the House of Saud owns us?

          • Nope. The asterisk is to signify a correction for the comment above. The parenthesis is to close the parenthetical phrase that I failed to close in said comment.

  21. A UCLA fan comment in regards to the “offensive cadence immitations”:

“Hard to think of a reason for anyone to dislike the pathetic Beavers. But I have held a grudge against them for years. I live in Hawaii but have been able to catch a few games at the Rose Bow. Years ago I saw a game that OSU won. A Beaver defender made a good play at midfield on a Bruin. As the UCLA player lay on the ground the defender stood over him and pantomimed a throat cutting motion. Taunting was not yet a penalty in those days. I fully expected their coach to pull the would be gangsta out of the game. Nope, play on. Years have passed and I have held this grudge close. After the job our team did on them yesterday I actually had a twinge of pity for the orange and black. They deserved what they got.”

What an uncalled for, spiteful, little prick.

  22. dude, tip of the cap to whoever put the dumpster fire gif on the beav recruiting twitter with the announcement of Guyton being dismissed. That’s gold right there

  23. Good analysis, Angry, in your opening statement. This year is as bad as it could be. Defense shows ok for a while, but the O cant get much done. Mistakes, mistakes…

Agree with BBlazer, …they need to win one to get back my attention. Bring on the basketball and then baseball…. thank god we got a few programs that are quality. Hope the women bb lights it up again this year.

And I feel for GA. Thinking he underestimated the amount of rebuilding he would have to do.

    • The opening statement is nuts on. The need for rebuild is/was always evident. The more nuanced observation concerns the systems put in place to deploy this group. Square pegs in round holes. Is this Gallipoli or Normandy? Only time will tell.

    • I’ll leave fb to GA and the fact that it can be considered the main program. However, I would like to see more across the board quality in so-called minor sports. For starters, volleyball.

  24. Saw this in a comment section from Beaver1989 @ o-live regarding Guyton’s dismissal, kind of long but interesting.

“I saw the altercation that PROBABLY led to his dismissal from the team. He was pulled away from Isaac Seumalo in the 3rd quarter. Not sure what transpired, but it started from the field in the 3rd quarter. Another 3 and out, and coaches and players had to pull Guyton away. He sat on the bench and started yelling and screaming before a coach walked to Anderson and talked with him. Anderson pointed in Guyton’s direction and the coach talked to him and led him toward the locker room.

Immediately, Guyton beelined to the O-line and screamed at Seumalo AGAIN. Coaches and players pulled him away and led him to the locker room where Guyton started yelling at the fans – not sure if fans were taunting him or what. But I got a great view of the whole thing from the stands. I had a suspicion at that moment he wouldn’t be making the trip to California, and probably wouldn’t be playing on the team anymore. I am sad that suspicion proved correct.”

Must have been happening all the time

  25. Aside from the Wisconsin situation with Stave, are there any other instances of GA being undone by poor handling of QB’s? He seemed to handle Keaton pretty well…

    • In all fairness, Riley had shown a bunch of winning seasons, and in the shadow of the 28 yr losing skid, sometimes ranking high in the “ten worst teams” thing, he had that to support him opinion-wise, when he started bozoing it up in his latter years.

Face it….the media loves Riley, since he always played the likeable nice guy, and had got himself that good coach rep (he must talk football really well, lol).

That upset of MSU could have been penciled in before the season started. My opinion — the players put that together, just on pride…. what Riley calls, finding their identity. There is talent there, as shown by the previous 9 win seasons. So Riley can coast on….

  26. True in some regard, but I wish they had given Brent VV a longer look at QB, as he has been a non factor at TE. Like the other TE’s. He would have seemed to be a good fit for this offense…….whatever it is?

    • Ionescu didn’t announce yesterday and per her coach, she would wait until the spring if she didn’t announce yesterday. I realize her twin bro is walking on at hole but this has to give us a small chance seeing as she’ll get to see our season unfold. Hopefully that gives her pause and brings us back into the fold.

  27. I too was really hoping football could over achieve this year as it would really help with recruiting. Now my hope lays with basketball and baseball playing lights out and our football coach spinning that to be all of OSU sports are on the upswing and use that for recruiting.

PS – My daughter the music artist drop a new single today… check it out at http://www.tiffanysinko.com or at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/choose-you-single/id1053279756 . She definately sounds better then the chainsaw.

  28. Rare god comment from Olive article on Guyton Dismissal:

If they’re really trying to punish him, they should make him continue to play for the team.

Bummed Gopher didn’t come up with that one liner first!

      • He reminds of a kid the Gophs signed a couple years ago. Offered by most of the SEC as a WR or DB. We got him with the chance to try to to play QB. Halfway through the fall camp it was obvious he was not going to beat our other QB’s who were pretty crappy. Switched to WR and made an impact as a frosh. Phenomenal athlete with next level ability. Regressed as a soph. and got kicked off the team the day they landed in Orlando for the bowl game. Before the first practice. Never really bought into the switch. Need to make sure SC will not be a distraction.

      • If he can leave his ego at the door (not saying he has one, I just assume). He could be a game changer at receiver and getting a fly sweep ball ever now and then. He just needs to make sure the team is first.

    • Thanks for the link. So, with StHC not slated to play Saturday, will there be any significance to whether or not he makes the trip? There certainly shouldn’t be a capacity problem on the travel squad with so many injuries. But, of the injured guys, maybe Seth is the one least likely to benefit (and benefit the team) by being in Berkeley.
I’ve got the same question as ObjCritic, would he be willing to block?

BTW, I was on the road today so caught much of the JoeBeav show……don’t know why I punish myself, this was epic technical dificulties: blank air, John W. endlessly explaining why things didn’t work. Small town radio, you gotta love it….maybe another reason MR couldn’t recruit!
BTW2: Tumwater Dave (known by some as SAFECO Dave) was on the show Monday and mentioned the “hard to recruit to NU” mantra we heard over the weekend. TWD opined that it is strange how poor recruiting circumstances seem to follow MR.

  29. Let me get this straight: It’s reported that a WR is in the face of a 300 lb OL on MULTIPLE occasions?

Anyone know what the WR was/is taking and where I could get some?

  30. Going to the game Saturday, at least that’s the plan. Can anyone tell me where the more ideal parking spots are (easier to get in and out and I don’t have to walk 2 miles to the stadium)?

    • Just a suggestion. You might consider this as an alternative since you will be in the Bay Area. This Saturday, November 14th, instead of going to the football game go to the 23rd Annual Masochist Faire. It’s all weekend in Berkeley. Just a small admission price, or co-pay as they call it.

Instead of enduring the pratfalls of the Beavs you could go to booths where; you can smash your thumb with a hammer, burn yourself with a cigarette lighter, have a concrete block dropped on your foot. In other words just about the same as watching the football team. Either way enjoy. JB

    • Berkeley is a bitch. My last game there I just parked a few miles from the stadium and hitchhiked. I swear to you some hippie in a VW van smoking reefer picked me and my bro up and dropped us off right at the stadium. Same thing going back, we just hitchhiked. That’s the route I would go, just don’t stress about the parking because there isn’t any.

    • Berkeley is the most urban campus in the conference and parking is such a challenge that I would never drive to a game there again. Consider parking at some park and ride lot and either take a bus or BART to the game. You’ll have to walk uphill regardless.

  31. Baseball signing day is also tomorrow. Haven’t really heard anything about this class. I would think it would be weighted more toward pitching and outfield.

    • I see Brent VV is probable for Saturday but no reports of him taking any snaps in practice. I guess if NM and MM were to go down we’d see wildcat? ugh!
Nice to see both Decoud and Chappell listed as probable AND as starters.
