1:30 on Pac-12 network.

No predictions from here on out, because the Beavs should theoretically lose every game, except the one or two random games where they decide to bring their A-GAME (Ed Ray voice). Is that this weekend? Maybe. Maybe not. UCLA isn’t that great, despite their record. Probably not, though.

Go Beavs. Let’s see some more progress. Past few weeks we’ve had some glimpses of progress…

  1. Any good pregame suggestions other than sitting in the hotel until kick off? Anything worth exploring in that “downtown” Corvallis area? Good food?

  2. Seems like we have a chance to win this one. Classic Oregon weather (50 degrees and rainy), UCLA just barely beat Colorado in Pasadena, and they have Wazzu, Utah, and USC coming up after us. I could see GA getting his first and only marquee win here.

But I’m not getting my hopes up. I think we lose by 2 touchdowns.

  3. Just an observation, but compared to the other Pac12 venues, your stadium here has a ways to go. We have highschool stadiums in LA that are probably all around nicer than this one. Do you have upgrades in the works?

Going to be keeping an eye on the UCLA defense up front today. Good luck today!

  4. Remember that guy who said he was a QB expert and backups are never better than the starter?
Funny they just mentioned Mitchell was #7. MM was #6. Now they are 1 and 2. Oops.

    • Angry, if they were 6 and 7, 1-4 aren’t even on the team anymore. What are you talking about? I really doubt anyone needs to see anymore of Mitchell or McMaryion.

      • They probably have noticed, but what are you going to do? He may be the lesser of two evils. The whole you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink thing. When it comes down to it you can only coach him so much and it’s up in the player to actually execute properly.

  5. Already we have a tipped pass(that we caught) and a drop by Bolden. Then a sailing pass that went 5 feet over Nall’s head.

Gonna be tough to throw today.

    • I know it’s boring but I would give it to Nall or Woods on first and second down until the Bruins show they can stuff it. College coaches just seem so impatient with their offenses. Storm got 5 and 6 yards on his two runs and Nall got 4.

  6. Our running backs both had good runs when they were given the ball. Let’s keep throwing the ball with a quarterback who can’t throw.

      • No, I’ve always noticed his funky delivery (compared him to Chad Pennington), but it was more that jump step and rag arm. Today the ball position looks different, though. Like it’s too high and far behind his head.

    • I think he’s shorter than listed, looks like UCLA has some tall lineman. He’s trying to throw over them inside of finding windows like Jonathan Smith used to do.

  7. Just called doc. Said to enjoy a few hours of fun and not worry about it. Gave me his pager if it goes beyond 7hrs but said otherwise enjoy Nall Ball

  8. Did that guy just said the QB run inside is a “really good call”?
    Really?
Running a QB who is thin with so so speed up the middle of 300lb defenders is a really good call when driving?

    • Baldwin’s first awful call, unless it was a bad read by Mitchell, have to rewatch that. But looks like a bad call. I’m beginning to hate Baldwin and the finesse crap, in general. Trying to give him until next year…but plays like that aren’t going to help him out.

      • I’m thinking GA is the kind of guy who won’t put up with it for long. Baldwin has some time with the changes at QB, but you have to score points in the P-12. Sitake has made changes and improved the defense by leaps and bounds. Baldwin is treading water.

        • But the backup option is Crowton, apparently. Which also sucks. Baldwin did well in year 2 at all past jobs, so we just have to wait one more year to see if he’s truly this awful or just experimenting/seeing what he has for the future.

  9. Larry Scott has had a couple of gorgeous open field tackles, and a great job working for that 3rd down stop near the redzone. They’re missing less.

    • Agreed. He kept the ball on that read option and then ran next to Nall. Nall ended up running farther than he did. He just doesn’t appear to have it.

      • His mechanics are worse than ever, too. His positive was decision making, and now that’s being exposed — time is a great neutralizer and exposes all flaws.

  10. Awful decision by Mitchell, throws a deflection pick. There were like 3 defenders there already, no idea what that was supposed to be.

  11. Serious question? Why even consider passing? UCLA can’t stop Nall and Woods. Let’s just run the ball every down and take our chances with those two guys.

  12. Mitchell is playing rat ball, just rolling out and throwing the ball on the run. They should be running 80% of the time against the Bruins. I bet Nall can get 10 yards on 3 carries over and over and when that doesn’t work give it to Storm on the edge. You also shorten the game by running when you don’t have the overall talent to match up.

  13. Insane punt.

3rd down sack, OLB was barely touched. 3 and out.

Haven’t had a lot of those since Mitchell took over, but we really need to get points before the half.

  14. So we threw on 3rd and 3 and everyone ran deep routes? Nall can get that three yards. We should seriously be able to finish this game with less than 10 pass attempts and be in it until the end.

  15. Beavs are really bad on 3rd down. I knew they were bad just from watching, but 115th in the Country? Damn that is bad. A lot of it seems to do with flow. Like on 1st and 2nd down there’s no method. They just do whatever and seem to waste the downs, so then 3rd down becomes predictable, which isn’t good when you have inefficient QBs.

  16. Holy shit, Rosen is a beast. This whole “Blitz 4” nonsense is awful. He gets infinite time and makes a perfect throw.

    Bad, bad playcall.

  17. So… is Mitchell actually a more effective QB than Collins? I’d rather have Collins*!

*Assuming his attitude problems are not real.

  18. Only reason to watch: MM should get an entire half. Finally we should get to see what he can do. Watch the coaches even mess up that (easy) decision.

  19. Not only is our passing game shit, our receiving game blows. There is not a conceivable reason to that this team should pass. The passing game looks like bad high school football. This game was very much in reach when we were running the ball. Mitchell fumble, less running and then the wheels fell off. There is nothing wrong with only call one play all day if it works. Nall through A gap was that play.

      • Are any of us really surprised? They’re both not D1 level QBs. Rosen is an NFL level talent and everyone can see it. Stars matter 9 out of 10 times. Falk for WSU is an exception in terms od success. Moran won’t be the answer next year and I’m not convinced on Garretson, although he’s better than any of our other guys.. GA has got to get a high star QB to run this offense.

        • I’d settle for a system QB like Falk. Think how good Ty Detmer was at BYU and how awful in the NFL. Kellen Moore…even Mariotta showing his warts. The guy at Colorado State, the guy at Central Michigan a few years ago (Lefever?).

I’d love to get that type of guy at the college level. Not sure they need a 4-star, but it would be nice. What would be nicer is a smart QB who can make basic throws every time.

I don’t see that guy on the roster, even Garretson.

          • Gotta agree. As you/I’ve said although recruiting by this staff is better in general GA/Baldwin and McG need to get us a 4 star QB to run the thing. I hope they don’t think they can “coach up” the QB’s that are currently on the roster. Mission Impossible.

  20. When we go 3-and-out, our defense fucking SUCKS. They give up easy plays and can’t tackle anyone. Is that a physical training issue?

  21. Oh good, glad we were able to throw that pick and then give up another td in under 30 seconds. We have a shot at doing this a few more times before the half…

  22. Poor decision by Mitchell, but didn’t it look like Bolden had alligator arms on the play? I thought if he had sold out completely he would have at least gotten his hands on the ball.

    • Bolden is trash, and yeah, that ball was 6 inches from being caught. Or, as usual, if that route was run by one of our 6’4″ guys it would have been an easy completion.

  23. Some folks seem to think Seth Collins has an attitude problem, but those people need to shut the fuck up about it because he’s the only division 1 QB on this roster

  24. 1. Starter struggles.

    2. Fans call for the back up.

    3. Back up struggles.

    4. Fans call for the back up to the back up…

    5. ??????

  25. This team is soooo painful to watch. We need some major upgrading in talent level. We have probably 2-3 PAC-12 level defensive players, and maybe 3 best case on offense. Mike Rilay stuck a huge dick in our ass with his half assed recruiting for the past 5 years.

On top of that our offensive play calling has been pretty suspect to me. Why the fuck are we throwing the ball sooo much? I know we’re losing now, but from the get go. Maybe it is a low talent thing but man.

I got to think we have to start Garretson, if not than we need a JC qb. I will have different things to say about this staff, if we have to watch any of our 3 abs we’ve had this year

    • I think we probably have more than 3 legit Pac12 players, but isn’t that many more. The talent level is super low, which is why I’m not furious over us losing games. Losing games that we should have won(CoughRileyCough)? Infuriating.

Losing these games? What did we expect? Freshman QBs throwing to guys who can’t catch, a line that can’t block, and a defense that can’t tackle. It takes time to teach and update talent.

  26. so much for my prediction. Time to find something else to do or another game to watch. Nice regression today boys. UCLA is not better than Stanford or Utah

    • Football doesn’t work that way, but nobody seems to get it. You either show up to play that specific week or you don’t. Has nothing to do with prior weeks or anything in the past. Yet, every year we have fans spewing the transitive property around thinking it somehow relates. Let’s please nix this idea starting now. All that matters is the matchups that specific week, mentality that week, execution that week, etc. Last week means zero.

  27. I think what pisses me off so muchis the fact that we played so well on the first half of the first quarter. Now we have completely fallen apart and look awful.

  28. I watched the Vandy/UF game, it was not as boring as it would seem. Vandy had a guy at QB who did not know what the hell he was doing, so they handed it off over and over to their good running back and when he couldn’t make a first down they punted. It kept the game close. Beavs could do worse then following something similiar.

  29. My thoughts on the first half:

    OSU’s offense is boring to watch without a legitimate DI QB. Every time Mitchell drops back to pass, one expects an incompletion and hopes for a completion. All of OSU’s QBs should probably up at PSU hoping to eventually earn some PT in Barney Ball. Mitchell clearly one of Riley’s lower hanging fruits;

    Barres-Woods still looking to be caught from behind on the long run;

    The D is looking better, but I think its hard for them to sustain the effort with 3 TOs. Trending upward. If the offense could score, or take a lead, the D could be having some fun;

Rosen appears to have some potential. The potential to declare for the draft after two more seasons. He already throws a better deep ball than did Mannion in year 5. Mannion will probably be signaling plays into him in another 4 years…

    Nall is a joy to watch. Looking forward to his futur;

Might as well keep rolling Mitchell out. Seems to increase his chances. Or maybe Marcus gets the second half?

OSU’s offense is boring. I can’t watch the second half.

  30. I’m more excited for the NE kickoff/asskick than this 2nd half.
If they actually play MM it might give some intrigue and a reason to watch, but looks like the coaches can’t even get that right. This staff is not what I expected so far, especially with the QBs. It’s just one bad decision after another. Seth Collins is sitting home right now playing NCAA on PS4 with an edited version of himself (indubitably bumped to all 99s, even in passing) and laughing his ass off at Nick Mitchell.

    • Me too. I don’t care what he might be able to do with his ideal players. A good coach will also find ways to utilize his current roster. And when he finds things that work, is quick to change it up. And wayyyy too many diet cokes. Mush mind.

    • Sitake has his players in the right spots (for the most part) at least. Better players would
Make the gimme plays. But what keeps me on the Sitake wagon is that while keeping the long term growth on track, he also seems able to adapt to what he’s got to work with.

  31. I thought GA was interesting in that halftime interview, it seemed to me he was more pissed at the defense than Mitchell’s turnovers. There were some huge missed assignments in pass coverage,. Once Rosen settled down it was child’s play for him.

I don’t know, it’s just kind of shitty from all angles in this game now.

  32. Still a half to play, but you guys haven’t shown much on offense. Bruins needed a half like this!

I saw where a couple of you guys predicted a win for Oregon State. Do any of you same people envision a come back in the second half?

  33. Could start losing recruits with these performances and crowds. That’s my big fear…need to keep this class as is (and add to it…QB please).

  34. Team has quit, no effort by the guy subbing off, starts jogging getting off field. I think GA has lost this year’s team unfortunately, hopefully he can gain their trust next year. Bunch of soft Riley recruits

  35. Cool, more Mitchell.

    Epic coaching fail, again.

Can we please see MM so we KNOW he sucks? ~10 career passes doesn’t cut it for me. Maybe he is the worst QB in history, but I want to see a few quarters to know.

  36. Recruits can’t be stoked watching this mess but if there is a plus side, there isn’t a single position right now that is set for next year. Literally any 4+ star guy (and many 3* guys) could be looking at playing and/or starting right away.

  37. Oh for crying out loud…

ffirst bad thing I’m going to say about GA all year, but if MM doesn’t see play time after this I just cant see it being anything other than a poor coaching choice.

Come on Gary. Step in and say something to Baldwin. Time to earn your paycheck and make a head coaching call.

  38. I don’t know if Whittingham was taking it easy on Andersen or what last week, but Mitchell is a high school QB trying to play a big boys game. I doubt he could start for Portland State..

    • I wouldn’t go that far. Its tough not to be down on the staff right now when were in the middle of an embarrassing season like this, but we all need to remember where hes coming in and what hes got to work with. If hes goes 3 years and nothing changes, then I’ll say you were right. But honestly, I just don’t believe that’s going to happen.

  39. This is the point where fans break down and make fun of everyone and everything. Even mothers, children, and life threatening illnesses become fair game. Let the rage fly, boys.

But seriously, this team needs a QB. End of story. 2 of the 4 suck for sure. Garretson, we hope, is a savior. At least he has another year to learn things. Should have knowledge at worst. MM might suck, which would make 3 of the 4 suck. Please recruit a JC or prep who is not a project. Even if Garretson is good we need a backup. GA era will go as QB play goes.

  40. Who fucking cares if MM plays??? This team is full of terrible players. They haven’t improved because they’re terrible. Playing MM does literally nothing except appease some people on this blog. The coaches have seen enough of everyone on this team in practice and games that they pretty much know they’re just gonna be slinging shit around for 4 quarters no matter what. The one thing I’d like to see from the coaches is more running clock so we stop losing by such embarrassing margins. Where’s Pettibonehead when you need him??

    • I’ve been telling my bro all year that I would not be shocked if they beat Sparty.
Riley always seems to pull a game out of his ass. Conventional offense. Bankers specialty.
      It would be classic MR.
Don’t get me wrong, I think they will get carved up and Riley gets put in protective custody.

      • It’s not a good matchup MiState QB is very good and NE secondary blows. Not sure what the weather is like in Lincoln today…that could factor in. But I think MiState should win this. Seems there is chaos in the NE locker room, too, and all that goes beyond Riley and his yearly miracle.

          • It would be funny, but I don’t really care because that just prolongs the NE fan misery. We read that story once a year for ten years, so we know how it ends no matter what happens on any given weekend.

  41. Anyone notice the trend of feeling “it didn’t have to be this way” after every game? Like with some just basic football coaching/offensive play calling, moderate execution, etc. Not that I expect wins, but after every game I think “It didn’t have to be this way…this bad”, which to me means bad coaching. Huge GA fan and his early years at Utah State sucked so this is the building process, but I hate that feeling because even if your team is bad you want to be doing things right and just failing b/c you suck (talent wise) not because of the wrong calls, bad coaching, players in the wrong spots, etc. Can’t shake that a lot of this is coaching and especially the offensive side. Not this game specifically — all year. Big picture feeling.

    • I believe you are right but I lay the day to day blame on Baldwin not on GA. Sure, in the end the buck stops at the HC, but hes said it many times, hes not an offensive mind and is hands off. However, that said I think its time for him to show why hes the headcoach and make a call. Maybe hes not objective enough, maybe hes got some kind of deal with Baldwin from the start that said he wouldn’t get involved, but whatever it is, I agree with the growing sentiment that Baldwin might be the weakest link on the staff.

    • It’s like they can only coach well in their chosen systems. And thus are trying to force their systems. Which to me speaks of a less well rounded coaching ability.

      • Yeah. Like, I feel UCLA is clearly better and should win this game, but I don’t feel it should be 34-0 with zero progress on both sides of the ball. And the feeling that if they just ran the ball and came out with an obvious and smart game plan (i.e. run, shorten the game since less talent, minimize QB weakness, etc) then things could be different. Not a win, but something respectable. Instead they force this square peg into a round hole and it winds up a joke. This isn’t a one time thing. It’s every week except for a decent quarter here and there.

    • ditto
Such a lost opportunity today; weather and UCLA penalties should have opened the door, but ya gotta call and make the plays.

  42. I like that the Cougs are pretty good. Always liked Leach. People got on me for suggesting the Beavs should replace Riley with Leach (back when ML was available). I think he’s unique and pretty good. That rebuild did take forever, though

  43. According to the box score, Nick Mitchell is still playing. Lolol

Where does 41-0 rank in historic Beaver loses? It has to be up there.

      • Yeah, the ball to Villamin should have been caught, though for a 1st.

Who knows. They won’t play the guy for any period of time so we might never know until he transfers and plays somewhere else.

      • He halved Mitchell’s total passing yards for the game with one pass, though. 47 for MM on one pass, 84 for Mitchell on 19 passes. Seth Collins last game he passed for 77 yards.

It was against UCLA scrubs, though, so who knows.

My guess is next week we will see the headless chicken back out there.

  44. Well at least all of your torment is almost over for the day.
Now I get to watch my other alma mater get smoked by #1 tOSU in prime time. Luck O da Rodent.

  45. So……..was there ANYTHING positive to take away from this game today? Never thought I would be thankful for college basketball season as a Beaver fan.

          • would you pay to watch this shit? I thought about going to one last game either today or UW. After the effort today, not happening. You could give me 3 tickets, a 20 dollar bill and a half rack and I’d still turn it down. I only watched part of the first half. After the 2 turnovers and 10 points I said fuck this shit. I feel like I won a little bit today by not watching. Is it just me or is anyone else having a hard time watching the Beavs these last couple of years? I don’t find this offense or brand of football exciting. I don’t really much care for the spread offense. Even CK’s Oregon teams I found boring to watch. Previously it was getting old watching Rileyball continue to make the same mistakes over and over and over. Or maybe I’m just becoming more detached because the Beavs suck so bad. Pretty pathetic the last bowl game was 2013 in Hawaii were the “good old days”. Bring on hoops and baseball please.

          • I used to be an optimistic Beaver fan that allowed my emotional state to be tied to the successes and failures of the Beaver football team. Then the 2008 Civil War happened. And then the 2009 Civil War killed any remaining optimism and attachment I felt towards the team. Now, Oregon State games are just another part of the Fall for me. If they win, great! If not, I just enjoy the rest of the football going on during the weekend.

  46. This just in from Cap’n Obvious:
Parker awards the “Chevron Drive of the Game” to McM for that nice pass. Full disclosure: not much to pick from today.

  47. Listening to the postgame with Parker but they’re seriously reaching to find some positives…

Our stength and conditioning guy Simon has his work cut out for him. We are so small, weak and slow. Most of it is DNA/talent but WTF was that loser Miller doing for all those years!?

Lastly, I don’t get Baldwin. Does he have the players – no – but most of the calls on O have been head scratchers. We’re gonna get boatraced by the rest of our opponents but in particular the ucks.

    • ………wait a sec, that was unreasonable of me to expect the athlete to see the same thing (at game speed) that I saw. Sorry about that.

  48. Post game thoughts,

Pretty much zero positives. Put ucla into some tough spots and then just gave it back plus some on the next play. Mitchell sucked. No other way to describe it.

Hard to see them even competing in any of the remaining games.

  49. Booker and Wilson make it 7-3 Utes with three nifty runs in a row. I’ll let y’all keep me posted on Neb, gonna stay with the PAC.

  50. GA basically insinuating a lot of attrition should be expected in his post game remarks. Always says it’s on him – accountable. Doesn’t seem like regular coach-speak.

BTW, eff Simple Jack and his cronies. I can’t believe those losers have jobs.

      • That they need to get with the program or they’re not suited to be in the Pac-12, which can mean a lot of things… Can’t keep reverting back to old habits, etc.

The talent level is certainly bad but as we’ve discussed getting old habits out of their system is a big issue BUT 8 games in you’d think we’d be better. Since McG was national QB Coach of the Year by utilizing 3-4 QBs at USU is it safe to say that they had better talent at the position in Logan than Corvallis?

  51. Name players that you think will be asked to move on after this season. From what people are saying, it could be 10 or more guys that are asked to look elsewhere. Any thoughts?

  52. Hey just wanted to say overall good experience here in Corvallis. I’m not sure if/when I’ll be back but will remember tonight as a solid road win and rare shut out.

Have always thought it was odd that Riley left. Not that I expected him to be the coach here forever, but I kind of did lol.

Well anyways good night to the Beavers and a chance I’ll be back for hoops. Getting to Portland is easy, but honestly the drive in here is awful. Its way more expensive, but is it better or easier to fly to Eugene?

    • Eugene Airport is much closer. If you don’t have anything going on that requires you to be in the Portland area and don’t mind paying the extra amount, it’s the easier airport to go through.

  53. Quick poll, how long until Andersen turns things around? Took Leach 4 years and hasn’t happened yet with McIntyre.

I think 2 or 3 years. It’s going to suck until then.

      • Yeah. I thought this would go faster than it is. Now looks like at least 3 years.

Figure next year have to break in a new QB, acclimate/train all the young/new recruits as some of Riley’s guys leave, etc. That will take a full year. Probably will see actual improvement game to game next year, then year 3 they might be pretty good if they can get a QB.

        • The Garretson transfer is really starting to make sense now. I think the coaches saw how dire the situation was and figured a decent qb that knows the offense and isn’t a spaz or a deer in the headlights is a vast improvement.

  54. Ok, I’m not going to give Collins a pass on his attitude, but there is no doubt in my mind that he has been and currently is our best shot at winning a game. I think this game would have been much closer if he was healthy and playing. I now see what our coaches are really dealing with and it ain’t pretty. I will no longer doubt Andersen’s choices of playing certain players because he sees them in practice every day and knows how truly awful most of them are.

  55. “scotty says:
    OCTOBER 24, 2015 AT 1:10 PM
    Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)
Riley will beat Michigan State and lose to Purdue as he limps to a 7-6 season. It’d be the most Riley thing.”

Stopping in to gloat. Thank you.

Unfortunately this coupled with our horrible loss today will re-embolden the Riley apologists and OSU bashers in the media. Sad.

  56. That was a good game. Nebraska fought, unlike our Beavs.

Riley and crew almost handed MiSt the win by kicking off short to an up man. One more pass and they would have had a game winning fg shot. Cook really choked on the last play. That has to be a Seth Collins-esque one read and done.

  57. We called this, but the Riley love by the announcing was sickening, almost like the Purdue game never happened and the close loses were just random happenstance. Michigan State isn’t a playoff team and probably didn’t deserve to win with that shitty pass defense, but that non-call on the receiver going out of bounds was inexplicable. I really don’t want Riley to get to a bowl game, so I will be rooting hard for Iowa, though if he follows form they lose to Rutgers and beat Iowa.

  58. What’s your deal? Let the Riley hate go. It’s about Anderson in the Beavs now. Why the hell do you give a shit if Nebraska makes a bowl game or not? Damn, enough…

    • At the very minimum, understanding how bad Riley & Co were for this university is requisite when judging this season’s progress by GA & co.

      • And, for understanding the Riley “hate” about which Bob complains.
The rate at which that Schaden stuff wears off is directly related to the suffering of fans under MR.

    • Riley did OSU a favor by leaving! Not having to pay him when he got canned saved OSU
millions. which one of you wouldn’t ink a “lifetime” offer for good money at your job. He left with his dignity and a chance for OSU to rebuild. He probably knew he was on his way out. I believe the man still had love for OSU. As much as I wanted him out! I still respect the coach he was at OSU. And frankly I’m rooting for him to do well. I’m glad we have Andersen! I was thinking as I was watching the Alabama game, Richard Mullaney is the big winner in all of this.

  59. Angry is just frustrated with the people who constantly gave Riley a pass. It was always you can’t recruit to Corvallis… Riley is the best OSU deserves….

It’s nice, as a Beaver fan who knew that Riley needed to go, to see him flounder in Nebraska.

    • Note how Luginbill started making a bunch of excuses for NU recruiting and what Opie was doing with a bunch of color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one?

All I could think was, “Wow! It’s just hard to recruit to Nebraska. It’s a good thing their coach is a nice guy.”

      • I saw that. It was odd and the scary thing is that they put a lot of thought into it, so they wanted the point driven home that Riley has challenges that are not in his control. Does it somehow benefit ESPN to have NU football be a national power again? Otherwise I don’t get the energy expenditure on a 4-6 team?

  60. How awesome is it that Riley’s one big win this year is illegitimate? I can hear the pundits talking about how bad refs affect the Playoff system. All B1G SoS’s drop. An undefeated team loses to the refs.

The other cool thing is this raises the P12 in national estimation with Stanford leading the way. That game plus Baylor looking like a bad team and TCU laying an egg makes for a couple really interesting weeks upcoming.

    • I read a couple of game articles this morning…….Nebraska football is a weird ass cult! They equate winning on an awful blown call with losing because of poor coaching or execution in crunch time. They don’t see the difference, they truly believe they have been redeemed by the football Gods. Somehow losing to BYU or Wisconsin was just bad luck and couldn’t be avoided and now they are getting what they rightfully deserve with this win.. I hated NU football before Riley, I hate it more than ever after reading this bullshit.

  61. Someone this week said something about the husker fans being a little swifter on the uptake than us Beavs. Reading the boards this week its clear they aren’t as now they are talking bowl game after today.

In all honesty I don’t even care if they do, but the Riley mystique is alive and well in Nebraska. lol

  62. Got back from the game a couple hours ago. Thoughts below:

    1. No more Nick Mitchell at quarterback.
    2. No more Nick Mitchell at quarterback.
    3. No more Nick Mitchell at quarterback.

That is all. At least Andersen finally gave McMaryion a chance at the end there.

EDIT: My avatar finally appears! This day just got better.

  63. I think several of us called Nebraska pulling this one out. Why Riley can’t pull out those kind of wins when his team is ranked and has something big to play for, I’ll never know, but I’ve gotta say, he certainly has that “Giant Killer” role down pat.

  64. The weather was terrible, but I didn’t have a bad time at the game despite the blowout. We all knew this was going to be a horrible season.

          • Wah wah wah…tired of hearing it’s someone else’s fault, week after week.

Coaches should coach their players up no matter who they are. Are there any players playing better than last year or having a good year? Can you name anyone other than Nall?

          • More than half the player wouldn’t even start for portland state. When you have shitty recruits you can’t make them in to world beater no matter the skill of the coaches. And how many of last year’s starters are playing this year? How many players were in regular rotation? That makes a difference. Again if you think they were going to be any better then they are, you’re either high or stupid or both.

          • You could have said the same thing about the basketball team last year and yet Tinkle coached the team up. There were no excuses that players still had CR in them after the season. The majority believed the talent was lacking on the bball team before the season started. Players left early or transferred. It was a major belief that they wouldn’t be able to compete. Then they lose to WOU in an exhibition confirming those beliefs. Had Tinkle had a rough season, the excuses of lacking talent would have been the theme of the year. The blame would have been placed on CR.

          • Bill, what’s you evidence that the coaches aren’t coaching the guys up? Losing games isn’t evidence, because they could still lose if coached up to the highest level they could be.

  65. Ok I admit the final score is what I hoped for. I’m not sold on your coaches IMO. Too many lopsided loses in the past 12 months. Maybe this is our year!!!!

  66. Well, this was truly the perfect shit storm of football so far. But since I’m a 49er fan, my nightmare is not over. I still have to endure Sunday’s punishment as well. I mean, there really isn’t any way my weekend could get any worse. So I guess maybe I can look forward to future weekends being better?

      • I guess I’ll clarify this for you, Mr. Psychologist. I like to watch football on the weekends. So when the teams I root for don’t win, the football part of my weekend is not rainbows and unicorns. But that has no effect on my happiness outside of football, which is a minor part of my life. But when I want to talk about my favorite football team and the football part of my life, I come here. So if you don’t have a football part of your life or don’t care about it in general, then why are you here? That is the real question.

        • Well said, Doozel. Stop being a douche Mr. Bean. We’re all here commenting 450+ comments in on a message board for a game that happened yesterday so get off your high horse big fella I think it’s pretty clear we care more about football than your average duck fan. I will proudly say my real life happiness on the weekends is greatly affected by the performance of my fantasy football team.

        • Well aren’t you guys touchy-feely. It was a legitimate question and not intended to be offensive. I care about beavers football as much as any of you, you can’t sit here and question my involvement. However, I can separate emotion more va. an entertainment. It’s almost like getting mad at a video game. Is it nessecary to for that to alter your weekend negatively? More importantly, is it nessecary to invoke your stress response system in your body? Heart attack percentages go up on game days / major games. Did you know that too? I’m just saying think about it, wellbeing shouldn’t be affected by what should be entertainment.

          • You’re leaving out loyalty and feeling connected to a program, and a school. These are also people on the team that bust their humps and are mostly good dudes that we want to see do well and get wins for their work. It’s nothing like a video game.

  67. honestly, I don’t even know who here is a real person or isn’t anymore. Freedom of speech is a giant clusterfuck sometimes. Jack’s multiple personalities run amok?

  68. Just saw the latest offer is a 0-star with offers from portland state and wyoming. recruiting has tailed off a lot since the big signings a few weeks ago. now they are looking to fill the class out with typical low hanging fruit. guys like that are not going to help speed up this rebuilding. i’d rather see that scholie go to a JC who can contribute.

    • “recruiting has tailed off a lot since the big signings a few weeks ago”

and what signing’s would those be since it’s November?

    • Gotta admit I share the same sentiment. Finau and the DE from Cali seem a little too Opie-esque in regards to signing/development. I think Finau’s going on a mission so it’s not like he’d have an impact next year anyway but we need guys that are at the very least closer to ready physically.

    • Sure you can be mad about that but the bottom line is that the team is completely unattractive right now with how disjointed everything seems from the performances to the schemes to the attitudes. The main knock with Riley was that we’d be one fucking win away from the Rose Bowl and the coaching staff would turn that exposure into some no-name DE prospect from Keizer. Right now GA and Co. have no positive exposure to work with (partly their fault). Gotta win first, then get the fans to show up, and then see the recruits start to roll in (Riley never completed this program).

      • I wouldn’t say Riley’s inability to recruit the main knock. The man couldn’t beat Oregon anymore. He couldn’t manage a playclock, he wouldn’t get rid of his weak AF coordinators, and he couldn’t bring any more money or excitment from the fanbase.

    • His mentor, Whittingham has always been about quick JC help. Maybe the talent pool just isn’t there right now. You know GA has to be looking.

  69. It’s a great that Crowton is helping Baldwin manage the offense. Without Crowton in the booth the score might have been 41 to -14.

Watched Cal last night. They looked beatable by almost anyone except the Beavs. JB

  70. Super annoyed that people are jumping off the bandwagon already. What the fuck did you expect??? Did you realize this team was garbage last year with a Senior QB and a coaching staff that had been in place for 10+ years??? Did you realize that virtually the ENTIRE defense from that team had to be replaced??? Do you realize that turnarounds like the ones at Florida, Ohio St., and Michigan happened so fast because they’re FLORIDA, OHIO ST. AND FUCKING MICHIGAN??? This. Shit. Takes. Time. Get a grip.

And Bill, don’t even come in here with that weak shit basketball team comparison. It’s a fuck ton easier to be competitive when you only need 5 or 6 guys to do so as opposed to 22.

  71. For what it’s worth, I thought your team plays hard. The players are playing about as well as they are capable of playing. Just a huge difference in talent between teams like the Bruins and Beavers. No way around it.

It may take your new coach a few years to get a conference win, sort of like Colorado. The pac12 is a demanding schedule and while teams like Oregon State can pull one off every now and then, it’s a whole different task to win consistently. Which is probably why I actually couldn’t tell you when the last time the Beavers were even a threat to win their division or conference.

  72. looks like we know one of the players Andersen is talking about not being tough enough to hang with the program. Gary Horowitz reports that Guyton was sent to the locker room in the second half. I didn’t report it at the time, but during the Colorado game, I saw Guyton arguing with a coach after he failed to realize he was needed on the field and OSU had to call time out because they only had 10 men on offense. I also saw Storm barking at some players last night but I write that off to frustration with overall team performance. Storm is the one Riley-guy I feel sorry for in this situation. And, for all the folks questioning the QB play, ask yourself this: who gave McMaryon and Mitchell scholarships in the first place?

      • I agree, he hasn’t gotten a fair shake; and he may yet prove himself to be marginally better than Collins or Mitchell, but so far he looks to be a steep drop-off from the Moevo, Canfield, Katz, Mannion “standard” which wasn’t epic, but those were guys capable of making basic throws. None of these three can. Like Angry said earlier in the thread, it probably didn’t have to be this bad, and Del Rio and Vanderveen would have kept OSU from getting completely embarrassed because an already under-developed defense simply gets exhausted having to win the game themselves. The upshot of that has already been pointed out above: the damage these losses can do to recruiting; like the Tyner fiasco, by all accounts, a few years ago. The reason the “dark ages” of OSU football (which is increasingly invoked as this goes on) happened is that the lack of success on the field became disqualifying to bringing in better talent.

        • Good points, I just want to see McMaryion get a full week prepping as the starter, then start a game and see how it goes. Hard to judge coming off the bench down 3+ TD’s and the team has given up.

        • Remember, the guys you mentioned as the “standard” which wasn’t epic, were part of the era where we were reminded that it takes years to learn the system
And I agree completely that McMaryion has been dealt a poor hand every time he has taken the field.

    • And really even if GA had kept someone like Del Rio, it wasn’t going to translate to anymore wins, was it? Maybe they beat Colorado? 3 wins versus 2? Not sure it means much in the long term scope of a rebuild. We lived through the 0-18 basketball team, so we have to trust that GA is the right guy and that he will get through this. Plus he’s going to need more than one capable QB if he’s committed to the QB run game.

      • no, probably not many more wins, but that wasn’t my point. I was keying off Angry’s observation mid-thread that the losses didn’t have to be this ugly, AND the only reason that matters is its potential effect on recruiting. That’s the “dark ages” replication nexus.

        • To be honest, how do you keep them from being this ugly with what you have now? You can’t “unRiley” the program in less than a year. It remains to be seen if it truly effects recruiting. Every program in the P-12 has been able to come back from a down trend in recent history except you could argue that CU is not there yet but improving. I think it owes more to coaching, there are a ton of athletes out there and legacy programs can’t stack recruits like in the past.. If GA is a good coach, with a good system and they get a good quarterback they will be competitive again.

  73. what a disappointing effort yesterday. Hardly anybody at the game, the tailgating at Avery Park was barely half full by the time we left to the game. Weather was miserable, although it wasn’t too cold. The gameday atomsphere was weak, and got worse once it was pretty clear Ucla was going to punk us.

We left at halftime and headed to Bdubs and watched the rest of the half there, don’t like doing that but nobody in our group felt like braving the rain for that crap.

Mitchell looked poor, and McMariyon once again proved he isn’t a D1 QB. Most disappointing was the defense. Ucla ran through us like water down a drain. I hate seeing what happened for the recruiting aspect, which we need big time.

I will give GA a pass this year, let him get done with one year first and then reevaluate.

    • The score doesn’t show it, but the defense actually did good enough to win. The problem was, the offense kept putting them in bad positions with turnovers and three-and-outs, and they got worn down by UCLA quickly.

    • attendance was pretty spare under the grove of oak trees at the Forestry Lot as well. There were a LOT of empty seats in the stadium, to be sure, but with Dad’s weekend the vibe was okay at first; not electric certainly, but buildable in terms of enthusiasm. I took note of Andersen’s comment in that regard; that is, when UCLA was backed up against the goal line and crowd was getting into it. He referred to that as loud. It was loud by this year’s standards, which is what he knows, but not by historic standards: 1999-2006. In those days I thought Parker/Reser was louder than Autzen
