Far West Classic Invite (Fullerton and Tulsa vs Oregon State)

311

8pm. In Portland. Back to back nights. Odd part of the schedule here with back to back games Friday and Saturday and then Monday, too. Beavs have the depth now to get through a stretch like this, so I’m expecting 3 wins.

Games are on Pac-12 network.

Go Beavs.

  1. I’ll be watching national player of the year candidate Gary Payton III. He is head and shoulders above all NBA prospects. Especially in the West.

  2. I’ll be watching national coach of the year candidate Wayne Tinkle, and how he coaches around the strengths of his team and preys on the weakness of the opponents.

  3. Beavs favored by 10.5–great memories of going in 1967 to see Princeton (my brothers school at the time), and then returning in the early 80’s while I was at OSU. Some crazy parties…

    Go Beavs!

  4. I’ve got 4 tickets to both games but something came up and I can’t go. I’ve already wasted tonight’s game, but if anyone can go tomorrow night to the Tulsa game, they can have my tix. I live in Corvallis, the tix are here.

  5. Thompson Jr. is hard to watch sometimes, poor fundamental defense and out of control on offense at times. Tinkle seems much more polished at this point.

      • That’s a good point, I think I counted at least 4 of his lane penetrations where he had someone open and he decided to shoot a crazy off balance shot instead. One time he kicked out it to Morris-Walker, but it was almost like he didn’t want to do it (MW missed the open three). I’ve also noticed on fast breaks he tends to keep the ball and try to score instead of dishing to the open wing quickly.

I know it’s early in his career and I’m sure WT is noticing the same things and WT knows a hell of a lot more than I do, so as fans we will just see how he develops. He also needs a ton of work on defense and I know WT sees that.

  6. Discovered that tickets cover both games each day so we’re going to both tomorrow!

Lots of tickey-tack fouls called today. Made for a long game..2hrs 15 mins…

  7. Word out of Provo is Sitake has one last interview with Donny and Marie and he still has to pass his drug test. If no coffee is found and the Osmonds sign off, they should announce the hiring in about three weeks or so.

  8. Olaf played twice as many minutes as Eubanks. Hope fouls were the reasoning for that….

Tinkle starting to be regular scorer.

Low minutes for cheick. Wish more could be squeezed from him. Rebound man.

    • Eubanks didn’t play well last night. He had a couple good defense and offense plays. But couldn’t hang on to the ball, a la Olaf.

Sad to say that Olaf had the better game last night. Still … Eubanks is a true freshman and will get better.

  9. I’m sure Andersen has known for at least a couple of days what Sitake is going to do. That being said, he’s likely already put out feelers for a DC. My guess is he has a guy in mind and has contacted him. Wouldn’t be surprised if Sitake’s position is replaced within days of a potential announcement.

    • I hope they pick the DC with the best committed recruits and try to poach. I think we’re going to lose a few guys (including the mission kids) and there are a few recruits I was counting as future commits who I don’t think will be coming anymore.

  10. I’ll be watching head coach Scoot Ruecckt as he threatens the UCONN women’s basketball win streak. Many are impressed and believe what he has done rivals Pat Summit while coach at Tennessee.

  11. OT – Eggers with some football updates, including “Slash” Collins (and a remark offense driven by players, not scheme) and Isaac seeking a draft evaluation from NFL:

Nice to see Mitchell make AP PAC-12 First Team and Isaac their second team by the way. Hope Mitchell gets drafted in decent round. I hope Isaac stays – he’d likely start at center, the offense should look much better next year, and it might reflect well on him if he’s at center making the line calls.

  13. In Fargo for some sad family business just prior to the Holidays. Had occassion to see North Dakota State dismantle Richmond in the FCS semi finals last night in the Fargodome.

Note to Beavs AD; do not schedule NDSU for a pre-season game. They are freaks!! Play with incredible intensity and passion. I would put them somewhere in the top 40 of all teams, regardless of classification. JB

    • 20/20 hindsight, but hiring Sitake might end up being the worst move of Andersen’s first year. Waste of money, waste of a year of defensive development, maybe a relative recruiting setback.

Should have put $250k of the DC salary towards a full-time gynecologist specializing in vulva injuries

      • Yeah…

Now we have a head coach who can say he parlayed a 2-10 team’s DC into a HC gig.

I’m guessing he doesn;t have any leverage to entice anyone anywhere near good to fill spots.

        Woe is us.

        Woe!

        Whooooooooooooe!

Note: was that pathetic enough? I was trying for Duck pathetic, but I don’t know if I had enough O’s there.

        • Yeah. Right. Because it was Sitake’s work this season that elevated his stock and got him a HC job. Not the fact that he was one out of maybe three halfway decent candidates able to meet the religious requirements of said job, and BYU’s first choice rejected them. Nope, this is clearly a giant feather in the GA cap.

          Oooooookay.

  14. Sitake is overrated. I don’t care other than recruiting. I saw nothing with this D at Utah or OSU that screamed he was some kind of defensive prodigy or a great future HC. It’s not sour grapes; I said the same during the year.

  15. I cant believe a pocket of a beaver fans are still holding out hope its not true. Sitake’s acct has started following BYU people, including Ty Detmer. It’s over, time to move on.

  16. So let’s hear some replacement names. I haven’t heard any I’m excited about yet.

I wonder if Trent Bray would be interested. He was a good LB coach and stuck behind Banker for life. Only good coach on that staff…might be worth a gamble. The Riley connection will turn many off though, i get it.

    • Bray might want to leave that ship before it sinks…the Riley/Banker train is likely at its last stop.

Two cliches, two modes of transportation….

It would be great for Bray’s professional development to have the perspective and experience of someone other than Riley/Banker.

    • You would think it will be someone GA has worked with before. Aranda would probably be the first call, but doubt he comes. Breckterfield’s name has been mentioned.

WSU’s DC would be a slam dunk recruiting and coaching wise, but doubt they can convince him to leave the Pirate.

I just dont see Bray getting considered with the way GA has hired in the past. Would be helpful in recruiting though.

      Do they promote coach Chad?

      • I really can’t recall the details of Aranda last year. Do we know that he actually was offered to come to osu and turned it down? Maybe the door isn’t closed on Aranda (which would be a huge get). Though I suspect even if he wasn’t offered he may be a bit miffed that he is essentially GAs second choice (after sitake).

Can we poach the d coordinator at Utah again?

        • I think Aranda was the first choice last year but turned GA down so it was spun as “probably not the right fit, but Sitake is the true #1”

With Aranda though, I think you woukd go through this same charade next off season as either an NFL team or a college team with more money will offer him a better gig. I’m not interested in t he revolving door at the coordinator positions. Need a guy who could stick for more than 1 year

      • This would be my name too Joe Salave’a could recruit the Poly Nation.

But we also will need a LB coach too, so we should throw some of those names out there as well, because it seems almost certain Tuiaki goes with Sitake.

I would think Inoke would be a good coDC and LB coach.

        • Plus, Salave’a is also the lead recruiter on Fredrick Mauigoa from American Samoa. That might be able to bring him in. He is our Top OL target still on the board.

    • Just throwing it out there

Paul Rhoads, recently fired but he used to the DC under Tommy Tuberville, Auburn’s defense ranked on the top 25 on his first year.

Todd Orlando, current DC for Houston, who used to be with Utah State.. Houston’s defense moved from 121st to 68th in the country in just a year.

Kevin Clune – Utah State’s current DC who worked with GA.

Tyson Summers – Colordao State’s DC, who came from UCF

  17. Scotty bowl rooting list:

Utah over BYU for all this Sitake crap and BYU kinda sucks anyway

UCLA over #TPB because 5-8 Riles would be yet another historic record (doubt UCLA wins though since they’re about as motivated to play as I am to get out of bed right now)

Mich St. over Bama because screw the overrated hyped SEC

Oklahoma over Clemson in a blowout because sweet schadenfreude if Clemson Clemsons on the biggest stage

TCU over U of Quackery because duh

  18. Andersen’s comments as per Mizell come across as unprofessional to me…BYU didn’t get their first choice, they took so long with Sitake it seemed almost inevitable, and Andersen could have been preparing, including messaging.

  19. I guess the Kalani Sitake possible replacement party has moved over here? What about Paul Rhoads as DC? What other names has Andersen had history with?

  20. Too bad but at the end of the day it’s too early into the rebuild to really derail anything substantial. And he was getting paid way too much from the jump. I say bring in a young guy recruiter to get the talent and let GA do the rest. We have so many offensive coaches and “helpers” that GA doesn’t need to be that involved with offensive issues anyways

    • Exactly, I am glad it happened this year and not 2017 when they were established. This gives them time to get a coordinator in place and not sabotage the re-build. To the people that are saying Sitake is overrated, what are you basing that off of? Really one year at OSU with a bunch of Banker hold overs. How about Sitake’s 10 years at Utah, he’s legit. I know you’ll say that was all Winingham but if that’s the case, how would replacing Banker on Riley’s staff have done anything. Basing it on that logic OSU could have replaced him and QB’s would still run wild on them. In Reality Sitake is a great coach and this is actually better timing than anything. He would have a found himself a gig eventually but this gives us a chance to being in someone early in the process.

      • Well, for one, Utah’s defense was better this year after Sitake left. Granted, they had a lot of seniors on D this year, but they did the opposite of drop off after he left.

  21. Right now, Utah is showing it’s not the DC, it’s the system and the players that matter. We need a great recruiter or two, other than that, we’ll be fine.

  22. Prediction time!

After the holy shit show that has become the holy war, Kyle Whittingham announces he is stepping down as head coach at Utah. GA then bolts for Utah. Between BYU and Utah OSU is left holding the bag and has no one left on the coaching staff. Because it’s OSU and I’m starting to agree with beavergopher. Snakebitten

    • I don’t know why people are giving you thumbs down? There was actually an article in the Salt Lake paper by Gordon Monson (who has been around Utah sports forever) regarding sources telling him that Whittingham will resign, sit out a year and then take the BYU job in 2017. I don’t know how that happens unless Sitake is in on something, but stranger things have happened.

  23. I’ll be watching tremendous head coach Craig Andersen and how he coaches the bowl after losing his d coordinator. Coach Andersen is considered one of the best of all time for a reason.

      • If I had to pick between those 2 options at those numbers it is a tougher choice than you’d think. Wilcox could decent value in that range and I think he is ready to settle someplace for atleast a few years after his last few. Aranda is interesting but would take atleast 700K to lure away and to keep for a few years having the 3rd year pay a little more makes sense. Don’t want Clune. Would be OK with Todd Orlando in the 575-600K a year range over 3-4 years. I want a DC ready to make a statement of strong defense at Oregon State.

        • I’ll bring my jiving talents back to Corvallis for only $200,000 per hand. Throw in an extra ten grand, and I’ll even cancel some gaps for ya!

  24. Kevin Clune? DC @ Utah State

I see he was LB coach at Utah State when GA was the HC. So based on nothing but past tendencies I’d have to guess that he’s a candidate.

    • #21 in the country in yards allowed per game. Not bad.

Given GA’s track record, he’ll go for someone more high profile. Looks like we can afford it, too.

  25. We need to bring back Banker. He was head and shoulders above anyone else in the Pac-12…. okay… enough…. was just kidding and had to stop typing because i just threw up in my mouth.

The only bother here is the recruiting part. Personally I think everyone sees OSU and everything going at OSU, with facilities, administration, and now we are suddenly the best college town in the Pac-12 (marketing) as a positive happening here and I think Anderson will be able to attract top talent.

Just hope it is quick. Here is hoping for yet another upgrade.

  26. Good luck to Sitake, anyone look at BYU’s 2016 schedule? He is either going to be a hero or go 3-9 and get run out of the promised land. Starting out 0-8 is not out of the realm of possibility. I only see UMass and So.Utah as sure things.

We all know what happened to the last coaches who left us (even though we wanted them to leave)…..8 loss season coming up, baby in the Chicken Breast Bowl!

  27. It would appear that the word came down from Provo to Las Vegas………. If you want to go to heaven and get those 21 virgins you will back off and make it respectable.

  28. Ladies getting destroyed. Game is going exactly as I feared, Beavs started slowly as they have all year and nothing is falling. Defensively the Vols are extending on the perimeter and forcing a lot of terrible shots. This is looking a lot like the Gonzaga game.

    • If you talking realistic, well, Justin Wilcox is out of work and seemed to have fallen out of being a hot commodity DC from his Washington gig.

  29. So as the ladies get to the line and also get layups, they’re suddenly right back in it.
    Good game.
I’d like to see more of that offense than just jacking up 3s.

  30. Give me Aranda. GA has enough resources to pay the 700-720k a year needed to get him. If Beavers are going to make a push beyond 7 wins in next few years it will only be with a very stout defense. I always preferred McGiven’s offensive instincts over Baldwin’s but that upgrade will only be good for a couple wins a year as the Beavs start their climb. To get beyond Vegas Bowls we need a defensive attitude and confident leader of that side of the ball. My gut tells me go hard after Aranda then fall back to Todd Orlando if Aranda isn’t secured. Maybe Clune or Pease after that but would be shocked if we couldn’t get Orlando into a Big 5 Pac-12 program with room to grow in the 579-595K a year range. Aranda however is worth spending some extra on but but a buyout clause so Oregon State makes money if he doesn’t stay atleast 3-4 years.

GA gets Aranda with this package IMO:

    Year 1: 710K
    Year 2: 722.5K
    Year 3: 735K
    Year 4: 747.5K

728.75K average over 4 years. If Aranda leaves each year left on his contract has to be paid to Oregon State 375-400K. So it would require a school to be willing to spend in excess 1.1 million a year to take him from us before 4 years.

    • I’d take Aranda also but also like Marcell Yates value as 525K could get him. He seems legit enough to have success. My 3rd choice just behind Yates is Orlando.

      • Aranda is not going to leave Madison unless it is for a gig in the NFL as a DC. It would damage his brand to start over with our shitty D.

  31. Is losing Ilaisa Tuiaki a big deal? I haven’t paid any attention to him or who he’s recruiting. Can’t imagine recruits who aren’t mormon following those coaches, though. Most guys in this class were sold in GA and playing time not Sitake or Tuiaki, to my knowledge. Don’t want Aranada. We’ll have to go through this again next year if it’s him.

    • Love them, but they can’t beat the elite teams yet. Can’t beat Stanford, can’t beat Tennessee in two tries…. I guess they did get North Carolina, but they’re not as elite.

Beavers can win the Pac-12, but they aren’t Stanford-level yet. Tree’s recently been able to beat Vols, UConn, and others.

      • And the two ASU games last year, but I agree. They’re probably a top 25 team, but belong down at the bottom of that list, not at #7. When–or if– they start winning these kinds of games (thinking Stanford & Gonzaga at Gill end of last year), then they will have arrived at the next level. That was one dismal shooting performance tonite. I always dislike seeing teams shoot more than 20 threes a game, and especially to keep doing it when almost none are going in.

    • This goes back to my theory that even moderate comebacks are essentially impossible because you blow your entire load making the comeback and don’t have anything left to finish the deal. Men’s dealt with this almost every game last year.

  32. Great comeback by the Beavs, just went cold there are the end. The Beavs are right on the edge of elite, let’s not forget that the class Rueck just signed is his best ever and it only rivals the classes that elite programs like UCONN and TENN have signed every year for decades.

  33. Recruiting would likely be one of Wilcox’s strength so I would be OK with him receiving an interview but he needs to realize his stock has fallen some and we would need to earn it back. He would only garner around Yate’s range around 525K to start. Only with multiple years of Top 30-35 defenses would he be able to see that climb more than by modest amounts.

Aranda is a tough get but GA has a chance. Unless you like Yate’s potential than Orlando is a good overall option. Reasonable value, several years of DC experience with Top 35 squads and the Pac-12 is a considerable professional upgrade. 580-585K a year is safe and there is still enough room for him to prove himself and have a nice 5 or 6 years with GA at Oregon State. Clune I wouldn’t pay more than 525K. OK potential perhaps but limited DC experience. Orlando hits the sweets spot to me if we can’t get Aranda.

  34. GA would be the best thing to ever happen to a guy like Wilcox. Just like he is slowly but surely taking the tiring Riley out of the players, he would take more & more of the Sark out of Wilcox. Wilcox will be very lucky to be at a Big 5 program next year. Most likely he will sit out a year and assess a plan to move forward. I like that Yates was at A&M for a couple years but don’t know enough about him besides a general good impression.

I say interview Orlando, Yates and throw a bone to Wilcox as well to see what these guys think they could do and their recruiting plans. If you can get Aranda though I’d do it. Pac-12 is a Top 2 conference nationally so beyond Aranda all these guys would keep their resumes at the top as a Pac-12 DC. For Aranda it may be lateral overall but he would make an extra 200K. That gives OSU a chance as Alvarez is cheap.

  35. This is difficult to watch. Officiating continues to be awful. At times both teams are getting away with murder. Others they call ticky tack shit. Defensively this team is nowhere near as good as last year. It’s not even close. Can someone explain to me what kind of offense OSU runs? All I am seeing is a shitpot of passing around the perimeter and then someone trying to break down a defender 1 on 1 with the shot clock running down. 10 games in and this is NOT a tournament team.

    • Didn’t you think the foul on Eubanks in the lane was bullshit? Especially after Duvivier was mauled just before while he was dribbling across the lane. Bad because Olaf had that three lined up. What conference are these refs from? No rhyme or reason to how they are callilng the game.

    • That is always the biggest question mark honestly. I thought the offense would be so much better with the additions of Tres and Stevie and having more bodies would create greater efficiency but it hasn’t been that great in my opinion. The numbers might disagree with me, but our offense doesn’t look very tuned.

I had huge expectations for our defense because it was so suffocating last season, and with the shot clock it should have been even better. At one point on Kenpom we were top 10 in defensive efficiency. We’ve switched to man to man more often and it hasn’t been as good as I’d like to see. We can create off the defense but there doesn’t seem to be such a huge commitment to it. We’re winning more games but will we continue to? Only time will tell if the defense can really jell into something special.

    • The same shitty refs we’ve seen at Gill this year. As soon as I saw the crew I knew we were in for a bunch of crappy calls.

As much as I don’t understand the offense, I’m really perplexed by Tinkle’s use of personnel. At least he gave N’Daiye a really good look tonight. And he responded well, I thought.

  36. I get the feeling that Andersen is going to pull a rabbit out of a hat and snag a big time DC. Similar to the surprising Andersen hire last year.

  37. Not a big Sitake fan, so not too bummed that he’s gone….I think we can get someone with better fundamentals — just really surprised by the blowouts this year given the hype.

      • I was sitting about 25 high, and it was warm for me.

I was also surprised at how many people were there but not filling the stands… and wondering why the hell anyone buys NBA tickets.

        But that’s an aside.

It just didn’t get loud in there. And there were a couple times it should have been loud.

edit: the totes for the Broadway Bridge were less helpful than they were distracting.

  38. Much better 2nd half. Beavs finally crack the code and win 76-71. Tulsa has 9 seniors on their roster. That is a pretty good team and I expect them to certainly be in the discussion for the NCAA tournament. Going into tonight Beavs were at 42nd in RPI and Tulsa was 46th. This is a quality win. Great job by the guys to grind this one out after a meh first half.

Only losses so far to Valparaiso (RPI 13) and Kansas (RPI 27). Take care of Monday against a lesser opponent then almost 2 weeks off before the civil war on Jan 3. I think we’d take 9-2 at this point.

  39. Gotta wonder how many assistants are going to bail. Replacing them might be more important than the DC hire/promotion.

Hopefully GA has it under control and isn’t losing sleep over this. A new DC and new OC(s) and who knows how many assistants in the first year.

And then there’s the question of how many commits will change their mind. Yikes. Course, with the money he’s making I can’t feel real sorry for him. For the fans, yes.

    • why? Unless it’s purely for religious or “feels like home” reasons, BYU isn’t going to pay assistants what Oregon St can and will. Everyone just needs to relax

      • We’ll know soon enough but it seems like a few mumbles are in order.

        First the BS mumbles:

“… Unless it’s purely for religious or “feels like home” reasons,…”

Could be but not only that it would appear that the economy is getting ready to collapse which will more than likely result in chaos and possibly anarchy. The Mormons are more prepared for this than any group I know of so it might be they’d feel safer in Mormon country than in Corvallis. Imo a person has to be bat shit crazy to believe in some of the crap that’s taught in Mormonism but I do like their attitude w.r.t. preparedness.

        Now the less BS mumbles:

“… BYU isn’t going to pay assistants what Oregon St can and will…”

Again time will tell but I’m guessing you missed the story I saw about how BYU grads, had made a commitment to provide the funds necessary to bring in KS and I’m assuming his assistants. So your assumption might be off base.

  40. Went to the women’s game, watched the men’s game on TV.

    Women’s game thoughts:
-Jesus the shooting was horrible. Tons of open threes missed.
-We did a poor job handling the press. Overall, the length and athleticism of Tennessee overmatched us and gave us fits. They were aggressive and it paid off.
-The comeback from 17 down was impressive. They showed they can play with almost anyone, but we already know that. They were a top 10 team. I expect you to play like it every time.
-We couldn’t buy a bucket at the end. What was that, 3 offensive boards starting with 1:20 left? That was horrible, and if you can’t score then you don’t deserve to.
-I need to call out Jamie Weisner. I said something about the shooting, but 0-10 from three is absolutely awful. Get it together. One was blocked, another was at the end of the game, but overall that was a shitty individual outing. I seldom call out individuals, but she needs to play better in big games. She airballed a mid range shot to put us up 1 at the end. I really thought she was a gamer, but that game against Tennessee told me that is a lie.

I have high expectations for our women’s team, and they failed today. This team is far too good to have “moral victories”. I can understand it for a lot of teams in building mode, but this team is designed to WIN NOW. We start 3 seniors and 2 juniors, with multiple upperclassmen off the bench. This performance was inexcusable. Especially with one of the best crowds ever. The men wish they could draw 8,223 to a game that’s not Arizona or uo.

    Men’s game thoughts:
-Overall decent performance. They could play better, but they did fine against Tulsa. Tulsa is a deep, experienced team so it was a solid performance.
-GPII is a darkhorse All-American. He’s averaging 16 ppg, 8 rpg, 5 apg, 2.5 spg, shooting 55% from the field with 38% from three. He delivers highlight plays and big plays when we need them. I don’t know if there are 10 better all-around players than him in the nation.
-Tres is playing better and better. He still takes it in and gets his stuff beat up, but he’s becoming a solid all around wing and I’m loving it. His role as a shooter/slasher that’s a solid defender is a role he’s beginning to embrace. He was in my personal doghouse, but Kansas game on he’s been playing well and might earn himself a starting position.
-Olaf shows WAY TOO HARD on screen and roll, and there was a 2 minute stretch in the game where he got beat on the same PnR combination twice in a row and was too slow to close out the third time on the fade off. I like Olaf on offense because he’s been more heady than Tres, but his slow feet are costing us runs.
-Stevie isn’t playing as well as I thought. This is a kid that could be playing for Stanford, USC, Gonzaga, SDSU, basically anywhere, so I expected we got a coup. I guess it’s the freshman thing, but he hasn’t rounded out as well as I hoped. He still commands minutes, but he’s a liability in team defense (although he does get his hands on the ball occasionally), and his shooting has been kinda ehh in the last 3 games. I can see why Tinkle isn’t playing him as often. We’ll need that kid for sure moving forward because he can fill it up, we know he can.
-I wish Malcolm would attack the rim more often.

The men’s team is in decent shape. The rotations are still weird, and I need some consistency. This was a good test, and although they lagged they ended up with the win. I expect a win over Quinnipiac and a good start to Pac-12 play.

    • I agree regarding the women’s game. If this veteran team isn’t going to win these types of games–at home to boot–then when is it going to turn that corner? Or is it? They just seem to lack that something that will take them from a pretty good team (which they are) to a great team. Seems as much mental as anything.

    • Women choked. They should have won by 30.

Excellent, workmanlike win for the men. They were getting worked over by everything then did the work themselves. They did very good. And LMW and Olaf did their parts well.

    • I would like to see more of Bruce, he seems pretty comfortable out there. Thompson Jr. needs to make open threes or his value goes down because he is a defensive liability at this point. Wasn’t his dad know for his lock down “D” at Syracuse? Duvivier is so strong, he can drive and get a shot off most of the time, question is will he make it. He missed a couple of layups again last night. Reid looks out of shape and can’t even get his shot off at this point. Overall, though it was a great effort, but man this team is GP2 right now and a cast of sidemen. I’ll take it for now

        • I wasn’t talking about just last night, but he did blow throw the Tulsa defense for a nice lay-up. He has been injured lately, but I think he plays within himself more than Thompson Jr and plays better positional defense. Bruce also looked good breaking presses in a couple of earlier games.

Thompson Jr. seems to have scoring on his mind and that may be what WT wants, but WT has also made subtle references to Thomson Jr’s defense. Down the road, Thompson Jr. and Bruce should be an impressive guard combination.

    • Re: Weisner. Your comments are a bit much, IMHO. One game does not a player define. National coaches and others would disagree with you. The whole damn team needed to come out with a much greater sense of urgency to begin with.

      • Just wondering – in your mind when the shots aren’t falling who’s responsibility is it to change the strategy from casting off the 3’s to working for lay-ups and higher percentage shots – – the coach or the player?

Imo whoever has that responsibility dropped the ball last night.

        • Assuming there was a game plan in the first place, and the team was following it, then it seems to me that logically, adjustments should come from the coach (who should always be ready to “adapt, innovate, overcome”). For $10,000, a Clint Eastwood quote from what movie?

The problem is, when you’re getting good shots that you normally would make, the tendency often is to believe they’ll start falling at any moment. They did — but too late. I guess one of the things that makes a great bench coach is to recognize quickly the need to adapt and come up with effective alternatives on the fly.

    • Thompson had a good game Friday night, the back-to-back nights he wasn’t as effective. Tulsa’s length and athleticism really bothered us early. Tulsa was much better than Cal St Fullerton.

The rotation was a little wierd, Goomis played after reading he had a set back I thought he was out. I think the rotation had to do with the minutes everybody played the night before.

Eubanks got in foul trouble and that really limited his minutes. N’daye I thought supplied good production I don’t understand why he doesn’t play more?

Tulsa was very effective at over playing the post on defense and we were taking bad angles trying the pass the ball to the baseline. The second half we really turned things around on the defensive end and Tulsa seemed to run out of gas. I don’t know if they played the night before or not, but they were the team that ran out of steam.

Tinkle subbed I counted 11 different players on Saturday, and that was a little choppy lineups.

Reid is good at creating offense out of nothing, but it can be ugly. But he is one guy who can create a shot when things breakdown. You kind of have to live with that.

The double high post in the second half was really creating some good looks, but with the different substitutes it seemed they struggled in getting it setup properly and in rythmn.

Got run but those are a few thoughts. Good win, great fun game to be at, better crowd.

Won tickets to the Civil War, so overall great experience.

      • the other thing of note: the officiating is terrible and makes college hoops very hard to watch. Now its not always bad calls, but it seems like its every time down a stop in play. At one point in the 1st half there were 21 total fouls and still 7 minutes left.

  41. The women’s team looked like somebody in a batting cage when the speed goes from 70 to 90.
Totally unprepared for the speed and quickness at the start of the game. Scott R also blew it by sitting on TO’s while the Vols built a big lead. Weisner was bad and was lucky she didn’t get a T for slamming the ball down after almost getting the ball stolen. Props for the comeback, but they should have won. Hamblin has some bad hands, The Bill Buckner impression on the second to the last offensive series being the most egregious.
Olaf with a couple of huge plays. Good win over a good Tulsa squad.
    .

    • This is a team of seniors and juniors, they’ve played the Tennesses, South Carolinas, and Stanfords before, and shouldn’t have been surprised when the game went from 70 to 90. They should have fully expected it. My question is why were they surprised? OSU is a good team, but these repeated performances are disturbing.

  42. Andersen should have just fired Sitake while this process slowly played out…would have been funny. Of course, being a State employee, firing somebody probably takes too long.

  43. Thinking about the BYU hiring process — Am I the only one that imagines a bunch of druids sitting in a dark cave, looking into a crystal ball….waiting for answers, nodding heads slowly….start process over again……sheesh

      • Orlando > Clune.

Hate that Mamma Machado keeps mentioning Clune. Hawaii does not prep coaches to be elite in a conference as tough as the Pac-12. Would take Pendergast before Clune who isn’t in my Top 5.

Sticking with Aranda and then Orlando as my Top 2.

Orlando would take the jump to the Pac-12 along with the raise in pay and national profile so If GA doesn’t get his top man in Aranda there seems a 98% chance he gets his next target. Mamma throwing out Clune just because he has LB experience is lazy and a good way to make the wrong hire.

        • “Hawaii does not prep coaches to be elite in a conference as tough as the Pac-12”

That’s an interesting theory you have. Dave Aranda would probably disagree

  44. “I lived in Corvallis for many years and would love to come back to the area. My new job has not panned out as well as expected. Need to be discreet. Send offers to:

    Bark Manker ? P.O. Box 344 Omaha, Nebraska 65483 “

  45. Feeling pretty confident in Tuiaki leaving with Sitake, and I think they poach Micah Cloward from our S&C trainers.

GA will not only need to replace a DC, but also several support staff. Plus, if Gary Horowitz is right, there may be some offensive staff to replace if Baldwin doesn’t stick around. Hope this year doesn’t completely burn out GA mentally

    • Hiring Sitake might end up sealing GA’s coaching fate. The “best” assistant hire ends up being the most damaging. Ironic.

Even Beaver Nation won’t put up with sub-.500 seasons forever, and I don’t know how you get a better job after failing here (unless you’re a gosh darn “nice” gum chewing guy with a cornsucker AD on the line.)

Or maybe this is all an opportunity :) GA is a doer, not a whiner and moper.

For those people here wishing Sitake all the best… WHY? He did little here, made bank for it, and is now raiding the staff and recruits. I’m not saying anyone should hope he chokes on a chicken bone, but I don’t see the need to wish him well.

        • I remember asking day 1 why people where so high on him because Utah actually gave up a lot of yards, and people said it was because the Utah D played with intensity. I think that was due to the players and culture they built over time with Whittingham and GA, and Sitake road those coattails. They guy has pretty much done nothing and everyone loves him. He’s like Lane Kiffin and Sark in a way where those guys being around winners made people assume they were winners, too.

          • I agree, he had 2-3 turds coaching at Utah a year. He had 0 consistency here. It’s an odd thing to see so much support at BYU for him, I seems just because he played there he could do no wrong. Well they got their guy. #ohwell. Get the next guy and move on.

  46. Don’t know if anybody caught this but Whittingham broke the news that Sitake got the job before the BYU AD officially announced it acording to the Salt Lake tribune. What a cluster fuck.

    • In all seriousness, what choice did they have? I know BYU is spinning it that he was option 1B, but the reality is he was their LAST option. If he turned it down they would have nobody. They had no choice but to offer it to him.

  47. Michigan hires the Boston College DC. Shouldn’t have to go overly extreme with our Aranda offer with Michigan no longer considering him. USC has some interest but that place lacks all loyalty or job security. Good to atleast have a little of that without going anywhere near the Riley end of the spectrum either.

Aranda knows what working side by side with GA is like. OSU can offer him a nice pay package where he spends 3 years to make what it would take him 5 in Madison. He may get used to the idea of a stable 800K a year gig without as much turmoil as other places and stay 5 or 6 years as OSU builds itself back into Rose Bowl contenders under GA.

    http://www.maizenbrew.com/2015/12/20/10630864/report-michigan-finds-its-dc-in-boston-colleges-don-brown

    • Repeat after me……….Aranda is not coming to Corvallis. If he wanted to he would have been here last year. He stayed because it is a much better career path for him. It is playing the long game. He is hot coach and coming to OSU would only diminish him. He has most of his players coming back from a very good D. He interviewed with the Packers last offseason and is interested in either a NFL DC gig or a CFB head coaching job. Nobody wants him out of Madison more than I do, but it won’t be as a backward move to Corvallis.

        • Is that known for a fact? Or is it hearsay? Maybe GA asked Aranda to come with him last year and Aranda said no. Besides, Why would Aranda stay with no guarantee of a job? Paul Chryst could have easily brought someone else in to be the DC and Aranda would’ve been left high and dry with no job. Personally, I am not buying it

          • Alvarez realized he had a great coach and Aranda saw he had a much better chance of advancing ing in his profession by staying in Madison. Chryst had no say in the matter. I’m sure GA wanted him, but Aranda knew he had a good thing going at Wisconsin. Perhaps he ends up at USC, but speculation of him coming to Corvallis is Pure Orange material.

      • Money talks. And no way are they giving him a dc job in the NFL with Hawaii and utah state as a majority of his coaching experience. He’d be a position coach first. It seems that interview was more of a let’s bring in the local guy to talk kind of thing. If they were really interested he’d be coaching at green bay. And there’s already rumors that he’s moving on. It’s a shot in the dark but you never know. All Anderson can do is ask, with a suit case full of money.

        • The rumors on the Badger and Packer boards were that he was offered the LB coaching job with a chance to take over from Dom Capers if the Packers D sucked again.
Money does talk, but only to an extent. He is a golden boy right now, and the big money is to become a CFB HC. Better chance of doing that in Madison. He will only move to a higher profile CFB program.

  48. First post-Sitake commit test…

    From Nemec:

‘…I like Coach A(ndersen) and the program they are building. They have a lot of good commits in the class of 2016. Utah, I love the coaches and the defense… physical,” he said. “TCU, good defense and good coaches. Nebraska, good coaches and fanbase. They showed a lot of love.”

Despite a developing bond with Andersen, Sitake’s departure for BYU appears to be a major factor in Simmons’ impending decision.

“It definitely affects my decision,” Simmons said. “Sitake was the one coach that was recruiting me the hardest. I want to know my DC and have a good relationship as well… now I don’t know who will be my assistant coach. It impacts me.”

Hoping to ease those concerns, Andersen and Simmons spoke Sunday, hoping a final pitch would lead him to Corvallis.

“He talked about how I need to trust him and that he’ll get a coach for me,” the junior college product said. “That’s basically what he said, just trust him.”

Simmons is set to make an announcement Monday “afternoon or evening,” he said, which might be the first time Sitake’s departure is felt on the recruiting trail.’

    • I’m not sure OSU was ever really in the running for him. His official visits were to Nebraska, Utah and TCU. On 24/7 he has 11 schools rated as his interest being cool & OSU is amongst them. He has the above 3 rated as warm interest.

Also he’s not waiting to see who OSU hires and who his coaches would be so I’ll be surprised if he picks OSU.

      http://247sports.com/Recruitment/Markell-Simmons-81405/RecruitInterests

Imo the only thing that’s of interest in this story is we have a sense of what GA is telling the kids.

      • I would take this kind of information from all sources with a grain of salt; whether it’s O-live, 247, Angie, Twitter or the countless others. Until a commitment is made (or a new coach is formally announced!) its all click-bait.

As for 247’s player profiles (or Rivals, or Scout, or…), general information is rarely updated until a commitment is confirmed. As for the interest-level rankings, those are rarely kept current. I’ve seen a “cool” or “none” remain on a profile even after a player has publicly listed a particular school as a finalist.

      • Nebraska would be a poor choice if he wants coaching stability. I suggest Utah and TCU are likely his best choices. Then between them, who has the best chance for success in the next few years? Do they both lose starting QBs?

  50. Basketball RPI in the mid 20’s but will take a major hit tonight against Quinnipac. They are in the 300s in RPI.

PAC12 is second in RPI as a conference. That could mean 7 teams could go dancing this year.
