Since this isn’t a game to garner much interest, feel free to keep the DC talk up in this thread. After this game I’ll make a thread dedicated to that. Sounds like there won’t be internal promotions, so scratch the Chad talk. I haven’t heard any intriguing names. Todd Orlando and Kevin Clune are names being thrown around. I’d be fine with either. Since GA is a defensive coach, I’m not too worried (except on the recruiting front) — he can always become more hands on in a pinch, and wait to see who is on the market next year. Recruiting is where this could hurt — they had that top 35 class I/we were expecting, and now it will be tough to hang on.
I’d be ecstatic with Todd Orlando, but not sure if he would make the switch from Houston to Corvallis after just being in Utah the previous year. It’d be a large pay increase for him since he makes $500K as the Houston DC. But, his Houston team is in a New Year’s bowl and will likely be in one next year with Tom Herman returning and most of their top players. Hard to give that up.
Kevin Clune sounds interesting, but I would promote Chad K to DC and have Clune come on as LB coach, or even have Clune and Chad K as co-Def Coordinators. Clune makes $200K per year as the Utah State DC, you’d think he’d make the switch if he’s getting paid $400K+. Chad K would get a substantial pay increase as well. Then get someone like Inoke as the DL coach, or even bring Joe Seumalo back.

Called into JB show just now with that same thought. Never was a factor with Riley (no demand for his assistants), but we can’t make these lateral hires that will only stay for a year or two because they have nothing else they can prove at a P5 level.
Some fans just want a name they recognized as big time. They don’t think about what comes with that, like replacing that guy every year. Plus, I’d rather pay less for a coordinator who has shown high potential at a lower level (i.e. the Chip Kelly model). That savings can be put into something more important. Especially with a defensive HC. Sitake started at Utah State, right? I mean there are coaches at those levels who are fine. Just go grab the best one. My big concern is recruiting, though…even if they grab a competent lower level DC, can he recruit the pac-12? To grab one who can coordinate D and is an A+ recruiter is the only reason to open the pocket book for this hire. It should be a 300k job. If you get a recruiter, bump it to 500k. Sitake was well overpaid.
I think you may be underestimating organizational fit in a rebuilding job like this. One of the main reasons GA brought Sitake in was because he knew him well and knew he fit into the kind of culture he wanted to develop.
One year in, that may be less of a concern, as it sounds like some of the building blocks are already in place. At the time, though, it was definitely important for GA to have a right-hand man that could lay the foundation.

Quinippiac is 4-5. They have five new starters. They lost to Vermont. Lets get some payback for last year.
This game will be a great opportunity for the young guys to shine.
I still want a DC who will be gone in a couple years. That new blood every two to three years is abrupt. But it provides a model which, in itself, is successful. When coordinators are hired away, that means something is working. That something would be vision. And I think it brings in new and fresh ideas and expands the vision if done well.
I would resist the idea of hiring someone comfortable from past stops if that person isn’t the best available. All things being equal, sure. But the best is what we want first.
I suggested Scott Shafer, but he’s been hired on at Maryland. So he’s out. If stability is what we want, then I would suggest Phil Snow at Temple. But then I started thinking about how he might be as a recruiter instead of a talent evaluator with a great scheme. I think Ruhle himself is also responsible for a lot of the evaluation on the D side there. But looking at their most successful unit, the LBs, Mike Siravo has been a part of a successful D wherever he has been. And he’s learned from some good coaches along the way. He has also been an excellent recruiter. Those things can’t be exclusive of each other. If he fit the culture and wanted to learn from GA, I would give him a shot.
And then I would also see if I could get Inoke on the staff to compete for internal promotion the next time our DC is poached. I would have thought Coach K would be next in line. But if he’s not ready so be it.
edit: Now that I think about it, one of the D-minded coaches Siravo worked for was Al Golden, and he’s available so far as I know. And he might (or might not) know the recruiting trail in Florida and can work with Lockette.

I guess it depends what you mean by couple years. It implies 2, but I’d say we want a guy for at least 3 at this point.
Hiring new coordinators each year is fine for the Ohio States and Alabamas, but it’s not good for a program that’s rebuilding and doesn’t have a great reputation outside of its own fanbase. For OSU, a guy who will be here at least 3 years is pretty important with this hire. And a guy who can recruit. If in 3 years we’re a powerhouse, I’d change my mind and not care much about stability.
Now, I realize Riley epitomized stability, but that’s not what I’m advocating. He was stagnant. I think there’s a happy medium.
I find it hard to argue searching for a D coordinator in late December is a good thing at this stage of the rebuild. I’m going to see who they hire, but I’m concerned about this class and all the setbacks GA has had. It’s like he can’t get out of his own way to actually start rebuilding. Last year it was coming in during the dead period, this year it’s loosing a coach during the dead period….plus an awful season, etc. It’s just very unstable and might scare recruits.
I would favor three years and establishing that as a pattern if necessary. But I’ll also take two years if it means extreme success.
And to anyone suggesting Wilcox… please stop. There is a reason Clay Helton was hired as the interim HC, became the man and then dismissed a certain group of assistants after Sark did Sark. I don’t want any part of that situation.
Yeah I think it just depends on where you’re at as a program and who’s on the market. This is a tough situation for OSU…again. I’m curious to see if GA can salvage it and get this thing moving the right way. It’s been going sideways and backwards.
Golden’s a 3-4 guy, so it kind of makes sense. He isn’t connected to GA at all, though, which seems to be an important criteria.
I think he’d be fine with GA so long as we don’t hire planes with banners any more.
But if OSU hires him, how long before the airplane banners start flying?

Someone I never would have suggested until VaTech hired Fuente is Bud Foster. He signed some ridiculous extension last year and looked like he was in position to take over. Maybe there are some cracks there now? Maybe not. Maybe he’s just that committed to VaTech.
That was surprising. Foster had so many opportunities to leave and become a HC, but stayed with the assumption he would take over for Beamer. I think Va Tech did the smart thing with the hire.
Foster must really like it there, because that had to be a major kick in the nads. I read an article that said he met with and hit it off with Fuente, but it is hard to believe there is not some resentment.
I want to see GA hire someone who’s good enough for other schools to want him. If they hire someone who’s guaranteed for 3 or 4 years it’s probably going to be another banker like person. I for one have had enough of that.
Pay the new guy something like $700K and if they want to jump fine, bring in another one.
Question for anyone who might be up to speed on the stuff KS had hanging around his neck: were some of those objects skulls? Curious minds want to know.
Also, when I realized that GA is making something on the order of $191K ($2.3M/12) PER MONTH I found myself not feeling very sorry for him and what he’s having to deal with.

Unless they’re hired on as a HC or the NFL. Lateral moves, I’m fine with that type of clause. But that also leaves you vulnerable to paying them excess if they don’t fit.

I agree. find a never-ending stream of coordinators by making the job one of success, worthy pay and eventual (or quick) advancement. Having, losing and finding the next best DC every couple years can be a form of trust. Yes, we’re watching to see what GA will do and how that indicates his ability to form this type of system. I would say he came from that kind of system himself and wants to do the same for his own people.

You pay an Aranda 800K and maybe even 830K a year. You pay an Orlando in the range of 600-640K. Anyone else without extensive DC experience not at the very top of the list doesn’t need more than 540-570K. You only pay premium for more premium targets. Other guys are lucky to get big bumps to 550K and any more is beyond their current market value.
It is pretty ironic that the trigger for all the massively unneeded upheaval with our football program was a Beav alum, bucking Bronco M. Luck O Da Beav’s.

I am not concerned that the next hire is going to leave in one season even if they are a big name. Sitake was always expected to leave relatively quickly however no one expected him to be gone in one year. Sitake was realistically only a candidate for BYU because of the limited number of LDS coaches. Based on our last season he would’ve been here for at least one more year had Bronco not left BYU.
Regardless of hire, the next coach will be stuck here for at least two years as our record next year probably won’t look much different from this year. If the next coach is getting a promotion after one season it is because we have wildly exceeded expectations (probably 9+ wins). I would happily make that trade.

When they showed Devon Collier all I could think about was potential and lac of development. CR had such underachieving teams. I think Collier’s best season was his sophomore year.

Shot the ball well, played under control, no TO’s, got some steals and assists. Pretty good line overall.
Tinkle Jr. does all the little things and plays hard. Solid fundamentals. He is going to a really good player.
Thompson Jr. even looked decent most of the time he was in tonight. Seemed to be more in control. I like Bruce a lot and think he was the sleeper of the class.

I liked that Smith (#1) for Quinni…he looked pretty solid in the post with some low post offense that I hope Drew was taking notes on. I see he finished with 16/12 with a couple assists and a couple blocks. When Drew gets something going besides the dunk, he’s going to be a beast down low.
I just can’t bring myself to care about the women’s team after that Tennessee loss. That was completely inexcusable honestly. Of course you’ll beat up on the teams that just don’t have the size, but when it’s close and you need to execute to win, I want to see it. Anyway, it sucks that Wiese is out with a broken hand, because she is so needed. We have a game against Notre Dame but unless Katie McWilliams can get the cogs moving and quickly, I don’t see us even making that game close.
The men did what they were supposed to. Stevie Thompson finally made a three, and that was needed. Tres is growing on me because he’s playing more and more within himself, and now it shows. NOW he’s deserving starter’s minutes. Parts of the game got out of control, but good job by keeping it all together. The perimeter shooting needs to be better to beat the good teams in our conference. If we shoot <30% from outside against UCLA, Utah, Arizona, Cal, uo, we don't win. Our defense simply isn't good enough these days. (I think ASU and Colorado are somewhat dangerous but very beatable…unfortunately we play ASU only in Arizona)

Next couple days we should start hearing more rumors about who OSU is moving towards for DC. My gut tells me Orlando is getting interviewed. 630K will get him to move from Houston for a Power 5 job in the PAC-12. Aranda will need closer to 830K and then he will do some serious contemplation. Not ruling out GA as I am sure he is giving Aranda a phone call.
From a quality-of-life standpoint, Corvallis, Portland, PNW are a huge upgrade over Houston….
I can tell you from experience: no one likes living in Houston.
Cost of living would be the big difference, but if he’s making 800k, I think he can manage.
Houston is in line to be a Big 12 member with major upgrades to their facilities and you can throw a rock from the campus and hit a hundred Div 1 prospects. He has hitched his wagon to a rising star, so I am skeptical if Orlando would come west even with a big pay jump. Yes, Houston is a crap hole, but HS football is king there. The big questions are if Orlando would come do we get Dawn as a package deal and will the tree huggers allow us to tie a yellow ribbon are around the old oak tree?
Other considerations regarding Orlando:
1. Clay Helton is looking for a DC… and is a Houston alum.
2. Orlando is a Wiscy alum.
UH isn’t joining the Big 12 next year. I’m sure he would at least consider a huge pay raise and the bump in prestige that comes with a P5 gig.

The sports writers who have made it sound like Aranda is in contention for OSU’s DC opening need to get a clue. He is not coming to OSU. Many fans are now under the impression that OSU has a huge chance of landing him. It is NOT going to happen. It is time to start talking about other candidates. I haven’t seen it so much on this board but on other OSU forums.
The only way it happens is if they offer him like 1.2 mil, and even then he’d just take another job year 2. Rebuild will never get off the ground if they keep shifting coaches.

However, his being at the Utah State game gives him a chance to talk to the Utah State people that he’d be interested in talking to.

Clune is USU DC. Clune was the linebackers coach at Utah State for five years before spending one year as Hawaii’s DC,.

McGiven is the only OSU coach listed as a possible but there’s no mention of Tuiaki so this list might not be worth much. Never the less I’m glad there aren’t more OSU coaches listed.
Norm Chow is also listed as a possible OC, I’d forgotten that he spent 27 years coaching at BYU. He’ll be 70 next year so he must be close to retiring from football.
Speaking of Tuiaki he’s no longer listed as a coach on the OSU football website.
I don’t recall seeing this story about Tuiaki changing his twitter avatar to the BYU logo. I’m sure this is old news to some of you.
