Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

502

You guys didn’t like the last thread? Well Merry Christmas, here is a new one.

Barring any big news/hires I’ll be back Jan 1. Use this as a general thread until then.

Enjoy the holiday break, and remember to spike your eggnog, and if Angry@angry’s siblings post here, please give him an atomic wedgie and kick him in the nuts for me.

  1. Merry Christmas to all you fellow degenerates! Remember it is about a lot more than spiked eggnog, although that’s not too bad either.
I liked the last thread, provoked some good points to consider, I thought.

  2. In regards to the loss of recruits due to the defection of KS: the converse may also be true. Bringing in a good recruiting DC may also cause recruits to ride in on his coattails. One can hope, right?

And a very merry Christmas to all of you.

  3. OK…. Here is my final offer! A 2 for 1 special. Make me the OC and I will throw in a free well established defensive coordinator, to be named later. As it looks like I may be coming into a little unexpected cash soon, we will split the salary.

Address offers to: Cutty Sark ? Serenity Lane, Los Angeles

bcc: jWil ? Parents’s basement Junction City, Oregon

    • In seriousness, Sark is radioactive now. Suing your former employer for dismissing you essentially due to your drinking issues isn’t going to encourage anyone else to hire you (except maybe Nebraska since they have the stupidest AD in the country)

  4. Well here’s to a better 2016!

    Back surgery last Saturday.
    Truck stolen last night
    Pending divorce.

At least Beaver Basketball is looking up!!!! Merry Christmas, fellow Beavs!

  5. Does Ellen DeGeneres hang out at angrybeavs and, sorry Ellen, but why would anyone want to wish her a Merry Christmas?

In order to fit in I guess I’d better do it too.

Merry Christmas and all that Ellen and the same to the rest of the degeners(ates) that hang out here too. :-)

    • You’ve got me, M&S — how did Ellen DeG get into this thread? :-)

Anyway Merry Christmas to all, or Merry Winter Solstice, or whatever else it may be that you celebrate this time of year, and Santa, pleassssse bring us a good DC — soon.

      • Santa brought the Huskers a lump of coal last year. Someone ran a naughty program in Lincoln, running a winning coach out of town like that, shame shame!

Maybe we’ll get our Red Ryder BB gun this year. Or maybe we got one last year with Sitake but shot our eye out

        • Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pranging ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

This is how the story is supposed to end, isn’t it?

    • The “Red Sleigh Down” episode is one of my favorite Christmas shows….

      Kyle: “Iraqis killed Santa!”

Mr. Hankey, with one of the great understatements of all time: “That sure doesn’t seem very Christmasy.”

Paraphrasing, but damn that was a funny episode…the torture scene:

      “Oh no, not Santa’s balls!”….

  6. I have a candidate for DC. But there is no shot of getting him back….at all. Rocky Long the only bright spot on the ass pimple that was Pettibones tenure at OSU.
And merry Christmas, or merry what ever you celebrate.

    • Yeah, there was a michigan player who said Hoke fell asleep on his couch during a in-home visit. Hoke denies it. I don’t know….anybody have an opinion on him? He has been successfull, but Michigan fans hate him….so I guess he can’t be that bad.

      • Who has time to hate?

A@A provides mucho pleasure as he befuddles himself… then posts.

It’s absolutely amazing stuff. It’s not casuistic. It would be a brilliant troll if that were true. I actually think he thinks he is on point and fails to be so with almost any major contrarian point he wants to deliver.

He is “nuh-uh,” “you dumb” or ad hominem. He has no other play I know of. But I actually think he thinks he has contributed many solid ideas… not none. It’s magical stuff. We’re talking FSM worthy.

      • This CD is a stocking stuffer for Lady Beavergopher. We saw this in concert last year in Minneapolis.
It is rare to experience true greatness, but that group is just phenomenal. I’ve heard them about eight times and and always come out of their performances on a high. Props for you excellent taste.

  7. Here’s my contribution. This song, to me, is the greatest Chrismas song ever made. You don’t have to be a Christian to like it…but it helps. It has been recorded many many times, but I think this is the best version, I get goose bumps every time this version comes on, and I have to listen to it til the end. Enjoy.

  8. Not one peep on the OSU DC search yet. Would like to know if Orlando and GA have spoken. I think Aranda and GA likely have had some contact. Really think it would benefit the Beavs to get someone like Orlando who is very used to working as DC across McGiven as OC. Don’t think Orlando could turn down 750K.

The delay could be due to his prep for the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve vs FSU and also Aranda’s Holiday Bowl matchup vs USC on the 30th. Big games for both these targets. Orlando to me is more likely but a perfect start of the New Year would be hearing Oregon State has a deal with one of them to become our DC in the Pac-12.

    • If I recall, they interviewed him last year for the head coaching job because he’s African American and checked off a box – errrr I mean a great DC

      • And what looks to be a very tough schedule next year. Read on a BYU site that they think it’s a schedule that will get them a New Year’s Six Bowl with one loss or even the playoffs if they run the table. Of course, it’s delusional thinking, but as an independent you have to have that type of schedule to be delusional to begin with.

    • According to that second article, bronco was the D coordinator. Why can’t GA do the same thing? And what is the difference between a head coach calling offensive plays vs. defensive plays? Seems like he could do it and maybe hire a full time special teams coach, or an extra defense coach.

      • I don’t remember the details now, but a couple of years ago Bronco fired his DC during the season after they got off to an awful start defensively. He took over and they improved greatly through out the season.

  9. Based on this ESPN scouting report about Handsome Tanielu (Could be a good starter for lower Power-5, Group-of-5 program) which I found on SB Nation. I’m sure glad the Beavs didn’t waste a scholarship on him. Just kidding but it does bring home the fact that currently the OSU DL is nothing better than a lower tier unit. As an aside, on some message boards “we didn’t want him anyway” seems to be the reasoning by some Beav fans when a recruited player decides to play elsewhere. Imo, pretending it didn’t matter as a way of dealing with it is not the way to improve a program.

    http://www.vanquishthefoe.com/2015/12/23/10310532/byu-football-recruiting-snow-dt-handsome-tanielu-signs-with-cougars

    snip
Here is the scouting report on Handsome according to ESPN.com.

STRENGTHS: Thickly built with very good bulk as well as playing strength. Does good job of shooting hands with upper body strength to press blockers and hold ground when he stays low. Flashes adequate lateral mobility to be active between the tackles. Displays good bull rush ability…

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: May not be quite as tall as listed. Can give ground when doesn’t win with quickness and leverage. Active with hands as pass rusher, but needs to continue to refine usage… BOTTOM LINE: Tanielu is an active and strong interior DL. Not a real dynamic, quick penetrating presence, but can be stout versus run and work as an interior pass rusher. Could be a good starter for lower Power-5, Group-of-5 program or quickly add quality depth to a higher tier Power-5 program.
    snip

Based on the following excerpt from the same article I’m wondering who else KT will be going after.

    snip
The addition of Tanielu will shore up a position that desperately needed some depth. With the departure of Bronson Kaufusi, BYU needs all the defensive line help they can get. Logan Taele has been granted another year of eligibility and Travis Tuiloma will return but beyond that the Cougars will be relatively inexperienced up front.
    snip

  10. Noticed one of our coaches started following Stanford DL coach Randy Hart. Not saying he’s a candidate for DC, but he does have ties to Urban Meyer. (I know, a stretch, but still) Only problem is he’s 68 years old, so not sure how much he has left in the tank for coaching. Has a ton of solid experience at DL and DC. Just wanted to put his name out there since we have heard nothing regarding the coaching search.

  11. Good grief, Charlie Brown. ‘Tis the holiday season. People are scattered all over, away from their workplaces. Unless GA had alerted possible D coaches some time ago, I wonder how much can even be put in motion just now.

    Happy Boxing Day.

  12. Please do tell me again how the beavz squadron failed to compete in a single conference game?

How did we go Sleeve Jackson to Mick Haass to winless in PAC – 12 performances?

  13. To make it sting further it seems the basketball teams have both given up on the seasons and talking heads say winless conference but how about Washington state Ernie Kent I don’t think is very excellent.

  14. Has anyone seen any actual candidates mentioned anywhere? I would love to have Aranda or Orlando. Salave’a would be great for recruiting. We must be waiting until after a bowl game(probably Houston or Wisconsin’s) to announce the hire. Do you think we might get a surprise hire?

  15. My list of favorite DC candidates in order
    1. Dave Aranda- Would be a huge get and make our defense a lot better.Probably much better than Sitake. But would likely leave in 1-3 years.
    2. Todd Orlando- Good coach and seems to be a good recruiter(might be Herman not him). Would be a good get.
    3. Joe Saleve’a- Good DL coach and great recruiter. I would like to see what he could do with our DL and LB commits.
    4. Kevin Clune- Good LB coach. Coached Bobby Wagner and a few other good LBs at Utah State. Not sure if I want him as our DC. He’s the DC at Utah State now… unsure if he would want our LB coaching job.
    5. Justin Wilcox- Was once considered a good young up and coming coach. Good recruiter and he’s from Oregon.Still pretty young.

    • Saleve’a could really help the pass rush and seems to be a realistic candidate. Shemar Smith, Isaac Garcia, and Hamilcar Rashed could thrive with him as the DC. Saleve’a is also a great recruiter which seems to be very important to Andersen.

    • I posted this up above, but what about Brady Hoke? good recruiter, defensive guy, ex-beaver (which doesn’t matter), looking for a job.

        • I think he has a media gig with Sirius, and he’s been trying to get back into head coaching. I think the only way to get him is a DC position. But again someone needs to ask, you never know. I think he’s more viable than Aranda, I don’t know about orlando or the other guy.

  16. Rod Gilmore is a very good analyst. And not just because he’s called out Langsdorf’s play calling in the red zone. Very insightful about Rosen’s weakness, which we didn’t have a glimmer of witnessing in Corvallis in early November

  17. Happy Belated Merry Christmas beavos!!!

Riley bites back in a real way today! My 3 team all Pac 12 parlay would have paid $250..

Mora and crew should probably be fired after that performance.

  18. Can’t be happy for Mike Riley for winning the bowl game. He left this program seriously lacking in talent. Set us back for multiple years.

    • Those poor bastards end the season on a high note full of hope… Predictable setup for the ball yank in one or two years. 6-7, Mediocre Mike at his best.

    • Biley and company tried like hell to give it to the Bruins in the 4th, but they wouldn’t take it. Fuck Mora! MR looked a little lost after the game, he was smiling like they had won something important and he was being ignored because nobody gave two shits.. Hey Mikey, you were still 6-7.

      • Sticking to the script perfectly: Flounder around at seven win seasons in the next few years, win some upsets and crappy bowls, and fans fight amongst themselves in the coaches vs. players debate as to why they can’t get win the big ten.

        • They’ll be excited when they finally have a 9 or 10 win season, somehow forgetting they used to have a coach who did that EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

  19. Angry and others have pointed out that Riley’s narrative is sometimes winning just as his testicles are about to be cut off.
Too bad for the PAC 12.

    • nobody ever needed to point it out

that’s how everyone reading this sentence ended up here

      it’s not about Riley

      it’s not about Riley’s friends

      okay…

It kinda is like Riley’s friends… insofar as it isn’t.

      Can we fucking lose Riley?

      Can we?

  20. Here is a classic for y’all:
When asked why Riley didn’t show “fire and brimstone” while at OSU (as he did today??), Eggers tweets, “He did,…when necessary”

Yeah, that’s it, Kerry; it wasn’t often important for him to wake up at poor little OSU!………….you can’t make this BS up.

  21. I’m somewhat curious to see what happens at Nebraska but some of you guys Riley obsession is bordering on douche’y I love you Scotty but live in the now bro.

    • I’m stuck waiting for updates on a computer and doing laundry. Gotta have some background comedy, and these Husker podcasts after a loss are gold

      Still, I suppose I should move on eventually…. If I have to….. :(

      • Don’t feel obligated Scotty, how many years did we put up with Riley? Follow NU football to your hearts delight. I personally plan on rooting against NU football with some vim and vigor until the day Riley is shit-canned.

        • I’ll probably have one year of hardcore anti-Riley rooting (this last year) followed by mediumcore once football season rolls around again next year, and then softcore after that. I reserve the right to go hardcore again if he knocks on the door of a championship though (hey it’s a crazy world, never know)

Once OSU football starts recovering from his wake of destruction, my anti-Riley passion will diminish. Maybe.

  22. Wait, beavz go winless and all the coaches leave meanwhile Mike Riley wins a bowl game? I’m not sure but I think he called more run plays last night than he did in his last 5 years in Corvallis.

  23. Angry brought up Yates and I have him 3rd in my Top 5 for Oregon State to bring on as DC.

    Top 5:

    1) Aranda (High quality DC and knows how to teach)
    2) Orlando (Solid DC & knows McGiven well. Entering prime production years)
    3) Yates (Younger but has shown considerable promise of ability)
    4) Pendergast (Likely higher if not for age)
    5) Wilcox (Has incentive to have a couple better years again)

    6) Saleve’a (Appears to be good coach and recruiter)
    7) Clune (Final guaranteed yes if all else fails)

  24. Angry brought up Yates and I have him 3rd in my Top 5 for Oregon State to bring on as DC.

  25. Angry brought up Yates and I have him 3rd in my Top 5 for Oregon State to bring on as DC.

    2) Orlando (Solid DC & knows McGiven well. Entering prime production years)

    • What’s OSU’s selling point/leverage that would help us land #1 or #2? I could see the rest moving given the right salary increase and/ot status change, but what convinces those other two?

      • Looked bad in the Pac-12 Championship against a very good Stanford team and Heisman contender but that is still lightyears past where OSU finished. He may be just slightly better than average but a decent recruiter with motivation to come back and prove himself after being let go by USC. #5 isn’t a very strong endorsement either. I also would put JW ahead of Clune but would possibly have the WSU guy at my 5 slot.

  26. I am not opposed to considering Orgeron. He is gettable at fair price if Aranda and Orlando prove harder and is a big name and recruiter still in national perception. OSU would get mileage and some solid recruits with such a hire I imagine. He’d be in my Top 3. Then guys like Pendergast, Saleve’a or maybe Yates as my next 3 followed by Wilcox and Clune bringing up the rear.

  27. Orgeron is intriguing. Has anyone heard anything or know much about LSU DB coach Corey Raymond? He is supposed to be on the rise in SEC territory as a guy who may start to get some interest for DC roles in other conferences.

  28. Another name to watch…Morgan Scalley

Safeties coach and recruiting coordinator for Utah. Look him up. Has charisma and presence. Probably why theit defense actually improved after Sitake left and an ace recruiter.

GA was in SLC yesterday. This may have legs and would be a savvy hire. Upcomer with great upside for OSU.

    • Wow, what delusional bullshit. Somehow the worst season since 2007 just does not register with these idiots. When Riley disappoints them completely, the backlash is going to roll him down to his San Antone’ retirement home like a tidal wave.

    • What kind of incomprehensible mystique does Riley have that allows him to hold the belief over so many in a fan base that his brand of mediocrity is a surefire step in the direction of future greatness.

    • U could say the same about us being optimistic and having scheme change and such. I honestly agree but just playing devils advocate.

    • For whatever reason, Riley’s teams usually played well in meaningless bowl games (with the exception of the most high profile meaningless bowl game, in which they totally blew it against a bad UT team).

    • I see a lot of level-headed and tongue in cheek comments in that thread.

What is quintessential Riley is the despair he institutes at the beginning of the season, which can’t help but lead to improvement during the course of the season (i.e. finding identity), and hope from the fan base returns- pointing to a brighter future. However, the entire cycle repeats itself every season. Riley’s tenure at NU has not been long enough for the more astute fans to recognize this, yet. The non-astute fans never will.

The really good news, though, is the quality of the team asserted itself in the latter part of the season, which appeared to come from both the players (who showed great character in not bailing on the season) and the coaches. So at least the future looks good.

  29. Okay, so who does everyone think we realistically end up with for DC? Not who we want, just who we think it will be.

My money’s on some relative unknown from a Utah-based school

  30. Rumors from Madison about a former GA recruit looking at a transfer. Dual threat QB. Started practicing at WR mid season.
    D.J. Gillins – Football – Wisconsin Athletics
    http://www.uwbadgers.com › roster
High School: Four-star recruit by ESPN.com, Rivals and 247 Sports … ranked as No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the …

    • that’s a pretty juicy story mud&sticks linked to. Reading closely between the lines, it has a whistling past the graveyard-like quality and he’s actually quite concerned about losing Aranda. Talking about how well-compensated Aranda is and that he should be satisfied with that compensation is odd. However, the most interesting line is when Alvarez says “if your wife’s not happy, you’re not happy” and I think that is the imperative we’ve overlooked in Andersen’s decision to leave.

  31. I stumbled upon the actual job posting for our defensive coordinator. The official closing date for applications appears to be January 4th, which suggests that no announcement could be made until January 5th at the earliest? That right?

Is there also the issue of ensuring diversity considerations which could require more interviews?

  32. For Classified Staff positions, they don’t/can’t conduct formal interviews until after the closing date, and I believe that the same rule applies to Administrative/Faculty positions, such as DC, as well. I can’t imagine, however, that GA hasn’t reached out to potential hires to gauge interest. The most likely scenario is that GA and company already know who will be formally invited to interview, including minority candidates. Of course, that short-list could easily change if a current applicant withdraws or a surprise candidate submits their application by the deadline.

    • it is also possible that some coaches (or representatives) reached out and expressed interests in the open DC position. The same way GA reached out to OSU last year

    • I don’t think we have to be that cynical.

We don’t have an airport or a mall.

      Yay!

fuck you if you think those are important in a college town.

The narrative has changed. Get on board.

  33. Sione Finau, Kyle White, Shurod Thompson, Howard Houston (target), and Riley Sharp are all following Morgan Scalley now. Might mean nothing but interesting.

    • Looks like they’ve been following him for awhile and that’s not a recent change. Would say that has more to do with Utah recruiting than anything DC related

  34. Women’s team looking pretty good against Notre Dame today. Not great, but pretty good. We still have the problem of turning it over, but the ladies are handling the press right now better and shooting a bit better than they were last week, and they look like they came to play.

    • Lost by one. some poor clutch shot making down the stretch again. But they battled on the road against the #3 team, should help come pac12 season. Hopefully, they can make a run during the league even without Wiese.

    • Had trouble logging on to ESPN, so I was forced to settle for Ron Callan (sp?) over the radio. Sounded like Katie performed like the Frosh she is and that Gabby, as a Jr., gave us lots to look forward to. Hamblin seemed to be a disappointment.

I’m with “thatguy”, tired of coming close, battling, and still ending with a loss. That said, conference play is most important and these games vs Tenn and ND are good preparation. No reason for the gals to think anything other than full effort will be needed EVERY night from now on.

If they will avoid looking past ANYONE, I think they can repeat as conf champs.
And, Ron calls a pretty good game, IMHO.

      • I think it will be pretty tough for them to repeat as Pac-12 champs. We’ll see if they can get past the LA schools next weekend, though they could easily start conference 0-2. No breaks on scheduling like they had last year.

      • I am with your analysis. Everybody wants us to win these games and become a powerhouse. However, sometimes teams have to grow throughout the season, and can become better as they learn from tough wins and loses. I am not giving any moral victories for close play here. They have performed poorly down the stretch of two most competitive games of the season. Wiesner seems to be putting too much pressure on herself that she can’t handle. She has not handled the clutch times well this season.

With all that being said, the team two executed possessions away from being undefeated. Is it something that needs improvement? Most definitely, Is it cause for concern? Yes. Can they turn it around? we shall see.

  35. Husker delusion reaching record levels:

    http://forum.huskermax.com/vbbs/showthread.php?81597-Losing-by-20-or-More-Points

Now they’re pumped that it’s the first time in 15 seasons they didn’t lose a game by 20 or more points. Don’t worry huskers, Riley will show you what he’s all about… Just give it time. The sunshine pumping, lowered expectations, and rationalizations are mindboggling.

The Riley Phenomenon is very deserving of scientific study. I can’t explain it.

    • I had a dream awhile ago about OSU playing Nebraska in a bowl game, (it wasn’t the rose bowl, I’m not that delusional). God I hope it happens while Riley is in Nebraska, I would fly anywhere to watch that.

    • Did ya catch this from that board? Seems very true, these guys are really stuck in the “old days”:
How many Nebraska fans does it take to change a light bulb? None, we all just sit around in the dark and talk about how great the old light bulb was.

Oh, and thanks scotty, for the link the other day to the Nebraska sports talk show. Those guys are beginning to see the light, but remain convinced that Tumwater Dave isn’t an astute follower of the Beavs, but someone who has personal issues with Riley. Too funny, assuming Riley stole Dave’s high school sweetheart.

      • NU football is interesting because they seem to be a program that somehow lost its “eliteness” and try as they may, just can’t get it back. The NU fans are insufferable because they still behave like they are relevant. Programs like Ohio St or Alabama must drive them crazy because they have had down years, but always come roaring back to greatness. NU can’t get there.

    • It’s not a phenomenon. It’s human nature. We always try to find positive aspects in things we can’t control but have a vested interest. This was the first year of Riley for the Huskers so it makes sense for them to do whatever it takes to create hope. But if Riley is still there in 3 years and he’s performing the same as he always does, then hope is out the window and they will get smacked in the face with reality. I guess we could say the same about our own coaching situation.

    • Riley takes a team with 9 win talent and roars into a 5 win reg season. Then, of course, with the luck o the Riley he gets a low tier bowl against a lesser opponent than if he were 9-3, and scratches out a win….

Well, the husker die hards have taken consolation. Hope still lives! The good-guy image carries him off the field on its shoulders…

God, I am glad we are rid of him!

    • Holy shit! I cannot believe I just read that a 6-7 season with no “blowout losses” is better than a 9-4 season with “blowout losses”. These clowns cannot be real.

  36. The longer we wait for a DC the more likely it seems we will get Aranda or Orlando. Any of the other rumored candidates could have accepted by now because their bowl games have been over for a while.

    • As pointed out above, the DC job posting doesn’t close until Jan. 04. They can’t formally interview, much less hire anyone until then. That’s not to say, however, that either of the aforementioned aren’t primary targets. Also don’t know whether a job opening announcement has to remain posted for a minimum amount of time and the closing date coincidentally fell on Jan. 4, or if it was chosen purposely to coincide with the end of bowl season. The plot thickens.

  37. I had a thought a couple days ago. Saban will need a DC after Smart is officially named the UGA coach. If I was Dave Aranda, I would be on the phone to try to get that job and get my PhD in coaching. Being a coordinator for Saban is an almost automatic step to a high profile HC job.
Sorry to pour water on the Aranda coming to Corvallis delusion. There is always Pure Orange if you want to live in fantasy land. Go Beav’s!

  38. “Per source, Utah State defensive coordinator Kevin Clune is headed to Corvallis to “interview” for the same role. Clune previously served as defensive coordinator at Hawaii and coached linebackers at Utah State from 2009-2013. Clune served as defensive coordinator at Weber State and Southern Utah prior to joining the staff at Utah State.”
    http://footballscoop.com/the-scoop/

        • Because you can’t believe in the inherent immorality of empire at the same time you adhere to that which needs empire to be successful.

But you’re also correct in that almost all the other candidates don’t even have half of it right.

        • Libertarians live in an ideological fantasyland and attempt to manipulate by pushing a message of individual freedom, but when it comes down to the practical, it turns out they want an individualized government that matches their personal values and subjects others to mandates and laws.

          • Substitute the name of any party for “libertarians”; then substitute that party’s catch phrase after “message of”…..then remove “individualized”, and you could make that work for any party including the Tea Party, evangelicals, etc, wouldn’t you say?

          • I wouldn’t say that. The whole core of Libertarian belief is smaller government. This is a hoax. Individualized isn’t smaller. Abortion is just one example where many Libertarians demonstrate this.

And I’d say liberals live in a world where their policies have the ability to be tested against reality, because much of it already exists in one form or another.

          • All of them are bought and paid for by the puppet masters (the new world order crowd) so, imo, no matter who the people vote into office we’re fucked.

If by chance there was someone who wasn’t a puppet and had a chance of being elected he’d be taken out one way or the other.

Even if they did manage to keep from getting blackmailed or killed they’d and got elected they’d have to deal with the corruption in congress and the rest of government.

            We’re fucked.

          • Meh, being a cynic is the easy way out. There are differences between candidates, even if you think they all suck. If we had Al Gore, we don’t have the Iraq war. If we have McCain, we have an escalation of the previius wars and we’re probably in Iran, too. If we have Romney, we have fewer people with health insurance and we have his AG in Oregon trying to over rule legal weed, like Bush jr did with assisted suicide.

          • This quote comes to mind, bendbeaver:

“The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum….”

          • I like this one: “the way to make people passively obey is by convincing them to believe a doomsday narrative and that they carry no influence or ability to create change”.

      • I know. It was a rough game. SMU plays dirty when the chips are down. I typically like watching a Larry Brown team play ball, even if I think he should be nowhere near college hoops. Tulsa tried to make a late run but couldn’t get over the physicality allowed by the refs.

They also couldn’t cover Milton for some reason.

  39. I just spotted Dave Aranda drinking a pumpkin latte while simultaneously exiting a plane at LAX and PDX while wearing USC embroidered socks.

  40. If it is Clune, that could be good. Cut from the same cloth, so schematically should be a smooth transition. Recruiting would be a question mark. I think Sitake was overrated in this respect, as well, but they did find some under the radar Polynesian gems at Utah.

  41. People criticized angry last week when he suggested Shurod Thompson may not last as a commit with the news of Baldwin’s demotion. Now the once 100% committed player is planning to official visit at Utah.

    • Oh please, both of you refused to provide evidence, so it was a case of “who knows”? Where are you hearing this from, anyway?

And besides, no player is “100% committed” until he signs the letter of intent. Until then, he can take all the visits to other campuses he wants.

        • He’s mad you didn’t post screen shots of the sources. Which would have been dumb on so many levels, the most obvious being that person wouldn’t be a source for long.

          • Unless the source specifically asked to not be named, I’m can’t take that as an excuse. What puzzles me is that you always are so skeptical and feel a need for evidence when you’re the one being told information, but you get mad when us readers here are skeptical in return.

I (and probably many others, too) don’t like your double standard of “Be VERY skeptical of whatever Riley/Banker/people in authority say! But if I say it, take it at my word because I said so.”

          • Oh whatever.

Recruits are going to be upset about coaching changes. I don’t think that’s any big revelation. And some of them are going to grumble under their breaths… again, not a revelation.

Decisive moves were made without ego soothing communications. But they were made in the express context of putting the best players on the field, running them at their best positions and realizing their greatest potentials. I can live with that if it’s what has brought GA past success and is what it takes to get us there. I don’t mind the constant tinkering method when decisions aren’t protracted. Rosters change from year to year. Constant tinkering is required.

So the context implies there are coaches who are willing to take star-shaped pegs and go find or create star-shaped holes in which to fit them. And there are some who think star-shaped pegs can simply fit in a round hole if you make the hole big enough.

        • While I agree that the demotion might play havoc on our recruits. RanY is right about the “100% committed” part. If you could take someone’s word, there wouldn’t be a need for contracts. I think Paul Lucas is a shining example.

  42. If Baldwin is still on the staff why would Thompson care what position Dave Baldwin has? Baldwin wouldn’t even coach Thompson because he’s a safety. He was probably going to take that visit anyway. Most recruits take visits to see all of their options and make sure they’re making the right decision.

  43. Chip Kelly was fired….. so let’s hear predictions of where he ends up. As long as it isn’t in the Pac12, I don’t really care.

    • My money was on Maryland, but they already hired a coach. Probably regretting that now. USC named Helton HC, so the Pac is safe from Chipster. I don’t know, there’s a couple SEC teams without coaches, but maybe he wants another shot at the NFL.

    • Did Syracuse hire a new coach? I think he’ll land there. I think he wants to be near New England and will take a lesser job to do so. If all those jobs are full he’ll sit the year out and get one next year.

        • They should probably fire him and hire Chip. Haha. I bet he would have coached there…the guy loves New England. I don’t think Chip cares about money too much.

          • He’ll stay in the NFL. Chip did not like having to glad hand boosters. In the NFL, he can just coach.

Since it appears the Colts job will also come open, that might be an option with Luck there.

          • There is a good series on the NFL network that covers Belichick and the Browns if that is what you are talking about wannabeav. It’s also a must watch for the Browns fans in the league, but you may want to hide all the sharp objects, keep animals out of kicking distance, and purchase some earmuffs for the kids.

According to this documentary, Belichick assembled the same team of people in Cleveland that he later had at the Pats. He was in the impossible process of turning the Browns into what the Patriots became in the 2000s. In 1994, they were 11-5 and had won a playoff game. The reason they fell apart in 1995 was due to some dumb ass deciding to move the team after 4 or 5 games.

Here’s a list of Belichick’s staff: 1) Ozzy Newsome, famous for building the two Ravens’
championship teams as GM, 2) Nick Sabin, famous for failing at the Dolphins and dominating the SEC, 3) Kurt Ferentz , not really household name famous but is the coach of the 12-1 Iowa Hawkeyes, 4) and a whole bunch of other people who went on to success.

And…..Art Modell fired them all, except for Ozzie Newsome, for having a bad season with a self imposed distraction of moving in the MIDDLE of the season to Baltimore. And everyone, except Cowboy fans, scratch their head about Jerry Jones about being a bad owner.

Sorry about your luck Cleveland fans.

      • What he said. But I think he wants the power a head coach in college gets, and he wants to be back in the Northeast. I don’t see him sticking around the NFL.

    • What?!?!? Awww, that’s too bad. You mean that fat piece of human garbage isn’t the next best thing since sliced bread??? Dude would trade his own mother to win a football game. He has zero class, a win at any cost mentality and is a complete control freak. He fell flat on his face in the big boy league? Good. He fucked himself when he traded Nick Foles for Glass Joe, I mean Sam Bradford.

I can see it now. Duck fan jerking off to his CK poster dreaming of a return to Eugene and thinking it’s a realistic possibility. Dream on fuckwads

      • I seem to remember his post-game interview once upon a time w/ Erin Andrews on the field where he told those d-bag Ucks fans to “shut up and have some respect” when they rushed around him after storming the field during his interview. He got kudos in my book for that one at least.

  44. Riley interview was actually good.
He basically admitted the discussion with Bob D was an issue, though he says it didn’t play a role in him leaving (obvious lie, for sure a nice guy).

    • concur. going back to one of your epic posts, he was in what seemed like a manic mode today, as in, not depressed. I thought the key points he made (in addition to getting an overture from Nebraska the very day BDC finally laid some expectations on him) were (1) his wife was open to it; she knew the local vibe was negative even if he was oblivious; (2) he thought change would be good for OSU too; (3) he referred to his time there as “bad years” interspersed with some “better years,” impliedly better than bad, but not avowedly good or great years, which was precisely the critique found here on this blog,

  45. Clune? Sure hope this interview is to satisfy the must interview 3 people preference. Most people have Clune at or near the bottom of potential lists of who they want. He was always a guaranteed yes. This is like taking the somewhat overweight girl to the prom because you are not positive the cheerleader you like will say yes.

Many guys I would want before Clune. Scalley who may steal Shurod T from us included. Thought we could get Orlando interested with a nice offer and an outside shot at Aranda. Sure hope we are going the bottom of the pay range with a guy like Clune. 530K seems more than generous. Atleast we save money with Clune I guess if this is who we end up with.

  46. Chip Kelly balked at less control

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio says Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie had been thinking about making changes in the organization for weeks, including stripping Kelly of personnel control. Lurie decided to part ways with Kelly when he balked at the idea, so the team could get a jump on some available assistant coaches. Kelly told Fox Sports he didn’t fight the decision and he wants to stay in the NFL and not return to college.

And this piece of yellow journalism is pure horseshit. Rattling off six college gigs that already have head coaches? Nice piece of hard hitting work there

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14462640/potential-landing-spots-chip-kelly-nfl

  47. Re: the Canzano/Riley interview, Gina responds to BDC telling Riley that, multi-year contracts of assistants were going to be eliminated with this:Interesting, considering every Gary Andersen assistant is on a multi-year deal

  48. LSU players now faking injuries to slow down Texas Tech’s offense. And they’re leading by 15. SEC alright.

    Suck
    Every
    Cock

      • This is an argument I don’t understand. How is constant hurry-up in any way cheap? That team trains to play that way. It’s not their fault you don’t. In fact, they are taking advantage of your weaknesses.

And now you suggest the governing body of the sport needs to legislate in your favor so you can subsidize your weaknesses? This isn’t world trade. It’s a game. Deal with it.

          • You didn’t. But that can be the only positive outcome from complaining about it. So if you don’t want governing and legislating, why complain?

The best, most ridiculous argument and action taken against the hurry up offense was when Marv Levy got the NFL to ban it for the AFC CG against Sam Wyche. He then went home and instituted it with Jim Kelly and had a lot of success for many years with it.

          • You complained about the hurry up. You went so far as to sympathize with cheaters who do so to counter something they can’t handle because they’re not smart , talented or diligent enough to do so.

    • on the bright side, those of us that reside in Oregon will no longer be subjected to Eagles games anymore. Still going to be stuck with the shitty Titans though.

There’s chatter of a CK/Mariota reunion in Tennessee. I know what we can call that possible cockslobfest. Failing to win it all 2:Electric Boogaloo

      • If it gets them winning games again, then I’m happy. Dreadful being a Titans fan. Never been more upset than after the 2008 divisional playoff loss to the ravens after they had started the season 11-0. If they do by chance hire him I hope they don’t give him full control like they did in Philly.

  49. Les Schwab Invitational has some good games. There’s a kid coming out of Maryland that is signed to UDub and geez. He dunked on half of Garfield and I could see Coach Tinkle sweating bullets knowing he’s gonna have to deal with this guy. I hope all of our guys with future eligibility there (Eubanks, Stevie, Tres) were taking light mental notes because he’s gonna be a problem.

  50. I want the football team to take the basketball route and just start hiring the dads of 5- star recruits. Pick out a 5-star QB and DT and just hire their pops. In the meantime lets get Shurods dad in here to be DBs coach for a few years. Problem solved!

  51. Also the Baldwin demotion was just plain stupid. You don’t need verified sources to see that. And to do it before recruits are signed sealed and delivered. I just don’t understand the move on any level. Can someone please explain it to me? With an attached annotated bibliography?

    • How about a WAG? McGiven was going to be offered the OC job at BYU and the move was made in order to keep him from jumping too. I could bring up other things but I’ll just leave it at this.

    • Andersen probably felt that McGiven and Woods were better options than Baldwin for the team. Is this a mistake, could be and time will tell. But, it seems,to me, to be a bigger mistake to wait to make the decision (obviously Andersen believes in the decision) just because of possible recruiting difficulties. He wants the staff to have their new defined roles in January when the team meets again, not in February after siging day. If you waited until February to make changes then you have the signed recruits who are now in your system, but upset with how the system works.

      • I’m kind of in the “better now than later” on the Baldwin demotion. The results on the field were not pretty against a lot of shitty defenses. Yes, freshmen quarterbacks, but lots of programs play them and score more than 16 points a game. In today’s college game, you should be able to score 16 playing blindfolded. It’s probably not just Baldwin’s fault, but it was needed change.

  52. Listening to the Riley interview. I have to agree: Sounds like he knew shit was about to hit the fan with this year’s team while the administration wanted results, so he jumped ship.

When the going gets tough, Riley bails. Not shocking, I guess.

Riley stuff hits me hard because I used to be a Pollyanna. Realizing Riley stopped being good was like a protracted “there is no Santa.” I feel kinda duped, but at least I wised up, even if it took until Civil War 2012.

    • I think that’s why it will be interesting to follow Riley at NU for at least a couple of years because on the surface he seems like an inexplicable hire for NU. I can’t completely buy the “nice guy counterpart to Pelini” argument because NU wants so badly to win football games, so one would think the NU adminsitration did due diligence and understood that Riley and his coaching staff LOST games at OSU because of their coaching decisions and strategies (and surprise, surprise, it happend this year at Nebraska).

Right now, from what I’m reading, NU nation is still buying into the “Riley does more with less” narrative and with the presumed talent advantage at NU, Riley will achieve great things. They are calling all of the close losses “bad luck”. I think NU’s schedule is harder next season, so we will see how patient they are in the end.

  53. I think the Beaver offense is going to be much more interesting and effective next year, with more clearly defined roles (Nall, Lucas, Collins) and more experienced QB play (Garretson, McM). The depth and diversity at RB is also very encouraging, and I expect Isaac to stick around and lead the OLine; the running game should be formidable and create balance and opportunity in the passing game.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/12/oregon_states_kevin_mcgiven_pr.html#incart_river_index

Also, regarding the D Coordinator and recruits and recruiting. I think its important to remember that while Sitake’s departure may affect some recruits, the incoming DC and LB coaches (if both are brought from outside) may pull some talent with them. Now where the DC comes from is obviously important (for example, if Clune, are his recruits to Utah State really Pac material?), and new staff doesn’t necessarily mean a zero sum result in recruiting (brining in as much talent as may have left due to Sitake departure), but it isn’t negative, and recruits may be reassured by and like the new DC.

Hold onto this class, including those highly ranked DBs, and things will be much better in year two.

  54. I’m having a bit of a problem in accepting the notion that Mr. Clune has demonstrated that he deserves to be a DC at the Pac-12 level. All he has on his resume is being a DC for one year at Hawaii and one year at Utah State. That does not impress me for whatever that’s worth.

Also, he hasn’t shown that he has the chops to compete against top level recruiters. Recruiting to Utah State is one thing but that’s no where near what it takes to get top notch kids to attend a school that has no airport.

    http://www.utahstateaggies.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kevin_clune_395651.html

Kevin Clune, who has 23 years of coaching experience, including seven as a coordinator, is in his first year as Utah State’s defensive coordinator and sixth year overall with the program.

Clune spent the 2014 season as the defensive coordinator at Hawai’i as the Rainbow Warriors defense gave up 26.8 points and 418.2 yards per game, an improvement from the 2013 season, when Hawai’i allowed 38.8 points and 494.7 yards a game.

Clune previously spent five years at Utah State (2009-13) as its linebackers coach, helping the Aggies to three-straight bowl games and a 2012 Western Athletic Conference championship.

    • Detmer was being mentioned as the OC well before McGiven, so I’m not sure where that idea came from.

If Clune can’t recruit he shouldn’t be hired. My guess is GA thinks he can recruit Poly players and Utah players. I think we can now see the pattern that GA is going to his comfort zone for all hires. Here’s Clune when he was hired a year ago. He seems fine. Don’t like how he jokes so much.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSNGXzkjdI0

      • “…Detmer was being mentioned as the OC well before McGiven, so I’m not sure where that idea came from….”

I’ll take your word for that.

What causes me to have my WAG is the timing of things. That being, 3 days before KS is officially announced as the new HC OSU promotes McGiven and Woods.

It would be easy and logical to say that it’s just a coincidence but I suspect it isn’t.

    • Isn’t it a little strange that under playing experience, they have this listed:
      1990 San Diego — Linebacker/Defensive Lineman
1995 Fullerton JC — Defensive Lineman

So he played 2 years, 5 years apart?

If you merge that with his coaching experience, it looks like this:

Coaching – 2000 Occidental College – Defensive Line
      Coaching – 1996-99 Fullerton JC – Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers
Playing – 1995 Fullerton JC — Defensive Lineman
Coaching – 1993-94 Dos Pueblos (Calif.) HS – Linebackers
      Coaching – 1991-92 Palma (Calif.) HS – Defensive Line/Receivers
      Playing – 1990 San Diego — Linebacker/Defensive Lineman

    • What if Clune is coming here as the LB coach? Tuiaki made $250K as LB coach here. $300K is probably what it takes to get him to come here as LB coach. That still gives you $680K to hire a DC.

    • I guess there’s a question as to how much we value the position itself. So a greater salary might be warranted just to adhere to perception. It’s a poor reason, but it is something of a reality.

      • I feel like GA wants to pay all his buddies at OSU’s expense. Giving this unproven guy more than 300k to be DC won’t help that perception of mine. I don’t think you bump a guy to 500-600k just because he’s in the PAC. Maybe after a couple years of great D you do that.

        • I wouldn’t mind a low base salary with performance enhancing bonuses that would equal any in the Pac should he do as well as any in the Pac. You can pay your buddies all you want if they wildly succeed.

I don’t disagree that unproven should get paid as unproven. But the perception of halving the salary of the last guy does what for expectations from those outside the program? At least make it clear that he could be paid as well as anyone when he performs as well as anyone. That way you still give the perception that we will pay fairly, if nothing else.

What I don’t like is when someone comes in low, succeeds, then gets a major bump in pay. Expectations are relieved due to initial success, and then it turns into another struggle for stability. I’m fine with paying a competitive salary for the position rather than the coach himself so long as expectations are set to match that salary, and consequences are meted if they’re not met.

  55. There’s numerous position coaches across the country that make more than 300. It’s a business, and in business, you hire people to fair but respective pay. What’s the point of being so cheap?

          • But at least Sitake was paid what was considered fair compared to what he was being paid and being asked to move for a raise. If Clune only warrants so much due to what he already earns, Sitake’s pay wasn’t that far off.

          • It is what it is. You hire the best you can get and deal with turnover. Success brings with it one of three things:
            1. A successful head coach who brings stability at a higher bar for a sustained time.
            2. A head coach who is poached.
            3. A head coach who loses coordinators to promotion and doesn’t reach #1 because of it.

The true test will be on the assistants that move on. If they succeed, more coordinators will be hired away. But if they falter and end up in exile in the NFL or FCS, people will stop looking our way for a time.

          • True, Sitake took money year one and isn’t staying around to pay back ANY of the investment made in him. Net loss of about 400k for the program.

    • @Angry@angry

Cheap or prudent? Imo that’s the question.

      Well, one of them.

How about another: How important is winning football games?

How important is it to have sell out crowds?

Are these things so important that they’d cause the administration to be fiscally irresponsible?

    • If he’s getting 200k, and you give him 300k, that’s a huge raise. What’s the problem?
The point of being cheap is OSU isn’t Uncle Pennybags. They aren’t poor nor are they rich, so saving 200k or more is a big deal. It can go into other things. That’s the point.

      • I’d be happy to give Clune 300K as LB coach. Just hope it is Aranda or Orlando as DC. If Clune is lucky enough to actually get the DC job then I could all but guarantee he will get atleast 500K. Sitake got the bump for high demand and assistant head coach title.

Aranda if he comes will make 900K+. Orlando around 750K. If Corey Raymond from LSU you probably don’t go higher than 530K which is what I would cap Clune at. Here’s hoping Aranda or Orlando will listen to a significant pay hike in a premier conference.

      • Bottom line, a DC at OSU is not worth 750k unless they are an instant game changer. Changer as in……, just because of their superior coaching technique the team goes from giving up 35 points a game to 25 points a game in one year. I wasn’t convinced that was ever going to be Sitake. Now if Sitake was making 400k, give him some time.

  56. Winning and sell-outs are more important than what we pay. I agree, there is a need to be responsible with the budget. But to expect the rebuild moving in the right direction, keeping the recruiting trending up, I don’t think we should be hoping to get a discount DC and making less than half of our previous DC

    • These are good points. I think the deal is we think we deserve to hire someone who warrants the higher salary. And if Clune doesn’t warrant that salary, then he isn’t who we should be hiring. So if he gets the higher pay from us, the perception would be that OSU is paying friends of the coach in excess when they don’t warrant that pay.

And we’ve been down that road before.

I like to think Stansbury and Ray are in touch enough with that idea that they have had that discussion with GA.

      • We’ve also seen OSU go cheap before and that almost never works. Rueck being the exception. Coaching is like a fraternity, people hire others “from the family” far more often than not. The other side of going cheap is what does that say to others in coaching circles, that we won’t pay? Not what we want to be known for. Get the best guy you can get, and pay him in respect to his peers.

        • So the question would be, “Who are [so-and-so]’s peers?

Is the pay commensurate with those peers? Is it in a range we want to continue to attract future coaches and recruits? Or is it inflated for someone who is not a peer simply because we want the perception of the position to be more “respectable” than the person who actually holds the position?

  57. Last comment of the year for me,

Football – Seems like Andersen is going deep into his coaching tree to find replacements. Does he need to make an outside hire? Not necessarily but the risk is much higher if it doesn’t work out.

I think the best place to look is the NFL. Those guys will have the most experience running a 3-4 defense, assuming Andersen wants to keep that scheme. The d coordinator strength should be his coaching. The linebacker coach strength can be recruiting. The second place to look for a d coordinator is the fcs schools. Probably a lot of good candidates there.

Also hopefully recruiting can pick up. Loss of Sitake/Tuiaki should be minimal. Right now the class is probably in the top 50. It’s the bottom of the class that is bringing it down. Doesn’t seem like there are any top recruits interested right now that could save the class.

Basketball – Pretty close to what I expected in non conference. The freshman have showed flashes but have yet to perform consistently. They tend to disappear at times. If the team approaches every game like they did vs Kansas, post season is a very realistic option. Probably will have to go 10-8 in conference play to make it into the big dance.

Women’s bball – should make the postseason. finish top 3 in the conference. Would have been nice if they won their high profile non conf games.

Baseball – I wonder when they are going to publish the roster. Earlier news reports said that they were at 35 guys already so no one is going to be cut. A big season is in store for them. Should be in the top 10 all year long. Non conf isn’t that exciting.

    • I think you’re the first to mention the NFL. I’m all in considering who it might be. You still have to consider turnover as a possibility. And you would need to hire someone who can recruit by reputation if he can’t do the legwork at first.

Bringing up the NFL and FCS, why is nobody talking about JUCO coaches? Would someone like Jerry Dominguez at Arizona Western consider this kind of move? He runs a very good D. He knows recruiting and does so in many of the same circles our coaches already target. He has worked with our coaches for over a decade. And he runs the academic program for the team.

    • I’m posting this here because it will probably never be seen by almost all of the AB’ers but it allows me to get this off my chest without having to burden the others with my cinical (?) thoughts on this.

My big concern is this recruiting class, especially on D and specifically the D line and linebackers, becomes a clusterfuck and is set back another year.

Not sure what clusterfuck means but it sure sounds apt.

      snip
clusterfuck – definition of clusterfuck in English from the Oxford …
A disastrously mishandled situation or undertaking.
      snip

Yup, clusterfuck is the right word.

Another concern is imo, image wise, the new DC is a step down from KS and that too could hurt recruiting. Being taught by someone who’s advertised as being one of the best vs some guy who has a total of 2 years experience at Hawaii and Utah State.

Well kid, what is it – – Do you want to be taught by “our guy” or by some nobody that has no real track record?

Also, I suspect Clune has had no contact with the kids OSU is currently recruiting because talent wise they’re a better caliber than the kids that Utah State recruits on a regular basis.

Oh yeah I think my low/no talent friend said Coach Clune had called him about playing at Utah State. Woooo!!! Snicker. Snicker.

      • Yet another clusterfuck thought: Did GA offer the DC job to Aranda and/or Orlando? If so then one would have to assume that if they were offered, then that also means they turned it down.

        • My bad. After saying it a few times I think I almost like Salani Kitake better than Kalani Sitake. :-)

But then Salani Kitake kinda sounds like something that would be served in a deli so…

And besides that his mother probably wouldn’t approve.
