  1. Why is there no announcer?

And what is with this camera work? Shaky, and I really don’t need to see behind the catcher’s head.

  2. Good thing some were too embarrassed the guy who SHOULD have been pitching tonight. Oh well….its just a championship….no big deal I guess.

  3. Good news is those three runs came early, if 44 can settle down, beavs have plenty of time to earn a few; their pitcher looks just as shaky.

  4. Hope we don’t lay down this inning and let their pitcher get into a groove. Ridiculous not to take advantage last inning as it was

  5. I’d like to see Gretler hitting higher in the order. Not sure what his stats are, but his approach is a lot better than Adley’s. Better swing. Adley has tension/stiff shoulders which creates a slow bat.

  6. Fullerton pitcher has thrown almost the same amount of pitches as Thompson. Second time through the order should get better results.

      • No I haven’t. I said he’d beat Holy Cross and other substandard opponents. Clearly said he’d shit the bed at some point vs a good team in pressure situation. He’s now given up 9 runs over 13 innings over the past two starts — vs the two best teams/pressure situations he’s been in.

    • I wish you were wrong but Thompson could not get it done… I guess the next question is how will the Beavers come back after this…

  7. Game over. Pretty sure LH would be sgutting them out right now. Also noticed during the Super Regionals that Jake really liked talking to LH between innings to stay calm and focused. For that reason I was hoping LH would travel with the team even if he did not pitch. The O and its click desparate writers have soured a once in a hundred or more years season based off a clerical error. Dam shame.

    • Too early to say the game is over, but what we do know is there have been two key plays:

      1. Thompson serving up the HR (and shitting the bed, in general)
      2. Adley swinging at a ball four with the bases loaded. Should have had a run there and bases loaded. Could have been a huge inning. So far that was our chance. It was such a bad pitch it was inexcusable to swing.

    • Jockitch. Might have nailed it.
I also said they’d need 5 to win (looks like they need 6, but knew Thompson would give up at least 4).

  8. KJ is swinging to hit a HR because of the HR in the 1st. The park still plays big even after seeing a homerun. They need to adjust and hit accordingly but not seeing it so far.

  9. Jake overcompensating on that HR ball. CSF getting free runs with the walk and HBP — those will kill you every time. Beavs were due for a close nail biter, and if they can get a few runs here and there, they have chance against the bullpen. Really needed to pounce on CSF’s mistakes, and Beavs haven’t capitalized.

  10. Looks like this pitcher backed up his shit-talking. Probably the end of his day, so short outing but effective.

Aldey is hitting way too high in the lineup. Why does he hit so high? No power, no average, no OBP, can’t hit or do anything with the bat.

I remember he was hitting cleanup at times earlier this year. I asked why but didn’t get a good answer.

    • In my view, he’s had three poor at bats, one maybe two at bats he was way ahead in the count. That last at bat, by his body language he wasn’t even sure where he hit it. How many runners has he left on base today?

    • Makes me mad that we didn’t, or at least haven’t so far, risen to the occasion to shut that guy up!!! I think they’re caught up in the *AWE* of Omaha. Very dissapointing!!! Not saying they can’t turn it around…but it’s not looking promising for today!

  11. Just my impression, but the announcing team seams hyper for Fullerton from the beginning, that three run bomb of course amped up the excitement, but have the Beavs become bastard children because of the LH situation? You know the general public has no understand of the nuances, it’s a “those assholes played a pervert, I hope they lose”.

  12. To bad that guy swung at ball four…would have an extra out to play with here…and an extra run most likely.

I’m having a real hard time getting over those walks. Would rather they take the pitches and let the ump ring them up with a bad call then swing at bad balls.

    • To be fair I think I heard in the Super Regionals that Adley was moved up to try and allow the bottom of the order a better chance to flip it back to the top of the lineup in any inning.

  13. Probably captain obvious here but I think those two defensive plays by Rutschman and Kwan in the top of the 6th gave this team a much needed shot of confidence/energy that they can pull off this comeback.

  14. I didn’t read a lot of the baseball threads. Did anyone, prior to me, take note Adley should not be hitting 4th through 6th? Or is this the first time it’s been brought up?

Was he hitting there all year? The games I watched he was high up, and I asked about it, but never got a good response. He should be the 8 or 9 hitter.

    • He has a decent amount of RBIs and they’ve mostly happened over the second half of the season. I think he’s a 7th hitter.

    • I mentioned it a couple of times…. but then again, I was all over them for having Kwan batting #2 early in the season. Was hoping the coaches saw something in Rutchsman that I didn’t, or that he would consistently improve with more at-bats. He is a solid #8 at this point.

  15. That was not one of Kwan’s better at bats. Not sure what he was thinking on those takes. It was not a time to walk or work the pitcher. Find a fastball, put it into the outfield and Preston scores.

      • No, Adley has been great, but he has left 8 men on base, right? One single from his RBI spot and the Beavs might be up two runs now!

Edit- 2 more on base time for redemption?

        Redemption!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Let’s close this thing out. I’d leave Mulholland in…he’s throwing great without nerves. If he can give another inning do it.

  17. That’s a team taking on the heart of the coach. Pat Casey is a flat out fighter and that’s what this team did. I’m so proud of these guys with all the BS thrown at them. Including the guest commentary in the O today. They time the release of everything to piss on our parade. Keep parading Beavs!

  18. Notes:
-Mulholland was the MVP. Kept CSF locked down at 5 and threw darts.
-Aldey’s beast D and redemption hit were nice. Left 8 men on base, though, and needs to be lower in the order.
-Thompson with an ERA near 7 over the past two starts. We’re seeing the real JT as the pressure mounts and opponents get formidable. A lot of offspeed stuff was hanging. Mentally he looked flustered.
-Trash talking P for CSF did a good job, but couldn’t get deep into the game. Ultimately left the stadium doing a decent job, but with his tail between his legs.
    -Gretzler should be hitting higher.

    Go Beavs

    • -Trash talker for CSF wiggled out of some dicey situations and threw, what, about 20 pitches/inning. A lot of that is credit to the Beavs lineup, for the most part showing good plate discipline.
-Wart covered Casey pointed out in the postgame that, after Mulholland, Drew probably looked like he was throwing 200 mph
-as intimated before the game, the difference in the catchers (particularly D) was a significant factor.

Side Comment: this am I spoke with a HS teammate of Adley; he said, “he is the best athlete I’ve ever seen, tell him what you want and he’ll do it.” One (young)man’s opinion, seems true to me.

      • In the portion of the postgame which was broadcast on radio there were no questions posed by reps of the big zero.

“we don’t need no stinkin’ quotes from coaches, we got ‘informants’ and investigative reporters”???

        • I was wondering who was giving Moran the pitching information? He should be forced to work hard for any parcel of information he gets. I would prefer if he was chained up outside the stadium, but that’s probably against some Nebraska law.

          • All he had to do was listen to the postgame interview with Casey on the radio. Casey went on record there saying Fehmel would start.

      • Get that irresponsible ass “journalist” off OSU. Go away and have fun with your probable libel suit, thinking about the damage you, as a supposedly professional ADULT, caused numerous people. Luke’s conduct as a minor does NOT excuse irresponsible, reprehensible conduct by an adult.

Can’t wait for the full behind the scenes story of what went on with this mess to come out.

  19. it will be interesting to see how Casey and Yeskie use the staff from here on out. The starters were our strength all season but I think it will be the strength of the pen now that makes the difference.

  20. Have to keep in mind that this game could have been a comfortable Beaver win except for Jake’s control choke and Beavs bats leaving way too many runner’s on base. Fullerton had all of THREE hits the entire game. Fullerton was mostly bark and minimal bite except for the well-timed homerun and they were cocky assholes. Respect the Beav!

  21. Three comments post game 1:

    1. Trevor Larnach has been hitting the ball hard, consistently, in the post-season (as he was towards the end of the regular season). Feeling increasing confidence with Larnach at the plate in key situations.

    2. The Beavers are likely to be a more dangerous team for the rest of the CWS, now that they have gotten through the first game butterflies, and have gained some experience in Omaha. The big stage — and the big stadium — probably won’t seem quite as big a deal on Monday.

    3. In Omaha, with its oversized outfield, the Beavers are probably better off, overall, with Kwan, Cary, and Anderson (left, center, right). Perhaps they give up a little bit of offense with Cary replacing Donahue, but not that much, and the superior outfield defense more than makes up for it.

  22. Report from Omaha..
Fullerton crowd was loud and obnoxious.
We looked dead in the water at 5-1. No energy and Beavs fans quiet.
The play of the game was Rutschman’s one man DP. Beavs crowd went crazy and energized
the team. Thank god for CBB pitching meltdowns. An explosion from the Beaver fans when Trevor
got his hit. A general WTF from the crowd when Jake did not come out for the 9th. He was awesome.
Got the Fullerton crowd to shut their cake holes. Beavs find a way this year. Very fun way to end the game.

    • Good report, thanks.
From the stands, could you notice the velo difference between Jake and Drew? I was for leaving Jake in because he was doing well and it is always a bit of a gamble to bring in anyone from the pen, but Casey’s mention of the velo difference seemed to be a factor. Paid off. This time.

      • I thought Drew would come back as the closer earlier in the season. I figured Max could use the break, and we were set on the rotation. And I figured we didn’t want him pushing starter numbers for pitches.

Didn’t work out that way… you could see his longevity wane from start to start… last week’s rest was necessary… I like him for this close.

He can close again on Monday. He’s also available for middle to close relief. But Max is also available for all the same stuff. If Bryce goes sideways (remind me not to name any kids after a canyon… except maybe Waimea), we have Drew and Max and a couple more good arms to kill good vibes by other teams.

And then we throw Jake out there and start it all over again… just like Ben McDonald explained Fullerton would do when we were going to lose.

  23. Canzano and i had some talks on Twitter, and he invited me out for coffee twice today if I’m ever up in Portland. Said he appreciates my passion for the issue and would like to “pick my brain”…could be the phony psychopath thing, but at least he’s open to sitting down and having a face to face conversation. For whatever reason the dude is dense and doesn’t seem to get the juvi/adult issue and many of the other nuances. If I go up to PDX this Fall for a game I’ll take him up on it. I’d rather do that than go on his show anyway. One on one talks you can get to people. On a show he has to pander to his audience and put on the public face where he’s never wrong.

    • That might be interesting. I wonder what type of person shows up? Is he normal or is his radio, paper and tv persona just some sort of shtick.

    • I don’t think you have anything to lose by doing it, but if he won’t let you share the conversation here then it’s kind of pointless. You know Canzano is going to write the “Luke redeemed” story if he does play next season. I’m kind of skeptical that Luke will, I think it was a bone Ed Ray had to throw out there to bring this to conclusion now. I could see Ray working behind the scenes to make sure it doesn’t happen.

      • My sister was in on a conversation with Dr Ray and a member of the State Senate this week. This is a summary of what I was told. She told me that Dr Ray was discussing what they needed to do going forward regarding a policy on dealing with student athletes that come into school with a “record”. She got the impression that he had no intention throwing anybody under the bus. It was a unique situation that had never come up before and now that it has they need to have something in place when / if it happens again. She gave no indication what that means going forward. The general tone of the conversation was there are a lot a layers to the LH situation and it’s not a “black & white” issue. After she gave me the rundown I feel better that the admin may actually deal with this situation with common sense and not give into the PC mofia. We will see.

        • That’s good, considering Ed Ray is a “hanging judge”…
Still, the best option for LH is to turn pro in some fashion. If he gets a free agent deal take it and start the process. 21 is getting old for a pitching prospect in the modern game. If you’re not in MLB by 22 you’re behind.

      • Where in the world has all this dumb angst about Ray come from?

The man has been solid for years, and he puts it in clear and concise writing for all to see… a lot faster than I expect people to do so.

There is no embarrassment on the part of OSU. There is no remorse. They played it by the book and were lucky that Luke was the case study who showed them their weaknesses.

Luke is a distraction now. I don’t know why that’s not understood immediately. All these pot shots at Ray are just stupid.

    • Agree with you both. Who would show up? And, I’d want to get his permission to record it and transcribe here. But not at the expense we are afraid to talk.

Ray is a “hanging judge”…no way Luke pitches again. I’d be shocked and eat my hat if that happens

      • I certainly hope LH makes a statement fairly soon after the CWS that he will be back for his senior season, so that the table is set so to speak. It will then be interesting to see what happens as we move closer to the season. Right now, I’m in your camp. I don’t think he plays, but if he can and that’s what he wants, I think it’s great.

        • I don’t think he should come back, even if they want them. I wouldn’t come back. He’s 21 now and needs to go pro…pitchers are making MLB younger and younger. By 24 you’re old in the modern game.

        • he already has……………

“My hope is to return to OSU next year as a student-athlete and continue to earn the trust of my community.”

          http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/controversial-oregon-state-pitcher-luke-heimlich-wont-attend-college-world-series/

Ed Ray’s statement the other day also says LH is welcome to return to the team next year.

“If Luke wishes to do so, I support him continuing his education at Oregon State and rejoining the baseball team next season.”

          http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/363311-243785-osus-ed-ray-comments-on-luke-heimlichs-status-and-schools-position-and-policies

          • “My hope” is kind of vague. Why does he need to hope, he’s a great student and hopefully he won’t even be a registered sex offender any longer when school starts in the fall.

          • Probably because it wasn’t his decision to step away from baseball this year. We all read the Casey quote that has since been edited in Eggers article. This was OSU and Ed Ray’s decision. His hope is that OSU and Ed Ray allow him to come back next year.

          • whatever

I choose to believe Luke is an intelligent person and a great teammate. The decision he made needed no prompts from any dark conspiratorial types. I want to think this of him because I want him to have a productive future.

And blaming others for his disposition is not a path he can take. So you all should stop enabling him by trying to squeeze every little imagined slight out of this situation.

There are a lot of things none of us should ever know about the whole situation. It’s tie to move on and look forward. If you can’t see that path, that’s on you.

          • That is not to say I think he doesn’t have an excellent case for defamation against the O and their yellow types.

It is to say we need to take a breath and trust the people who have always had the right thing to say on their minds. Coach says trust the kid even though we never knew him. Prez says we have rules, ad we’ll follow them… oh… and there’s a distraction.

Trump is a fucking moron (understatement of the year), and the 10-2 will be below 80 points next week.

            So take a chill pill.

      • I suspect a deal was struck among Luke, Casey, and Ed Ray. Luke agreed to walk away this season, and Ray agreed to let Luke come back next season. And I think that’s what is going to happen. Who knows, but that’s my guess….

        • The head-scratcher in all of this is, to me: Why “the mother,” – if she was so vindictive and anxious to ruin LH’s life insofar as she could – why she waited. As was pointed out – he was Gatorade Player of the Year, didn’t she know he was a rising star at OSU? If she planned to derail him, why now?
Perhaps she doesn’t know how to read, or – was there some kind of seal on when she couldn’t speak to the situation – but suddenly, there she is, “talking” to the muckraker.

          Oh well.

          • Maybe she had beem telling every newspaper/radio station/tv station, but only 1 felt like it was responsible journalism to out the court records of 2 minors, especially when there wasn’t a current news story associated with those 2 minors other than “one is having a successful baseball season”
            Thank you Oregonian

          • Fuck it.

I’m going to stoop to Canzano’s level.

Someone pointed out that child on child molestation is 80% due to the perp already having been a victim. The numbers are about right. So… Luke was a victim, and that led to him victimizing his niece. Maybe it was his niece’s father who made him a victim in the first place?

            Canzano logic sucks.

          • Her timing certainly delivered maximum negative impact for LH (at least for the time being). Too perfect, to be coincidental? I would also think that given what has transpired yesterday about LH being welcomed back next year, she should be ranting and raving again soon. Wasn’t one of her actual quotes something about “being shocked that he was on the baseball team”? Prepared to be “shocked” again, Mom.

    • Angry, you shouldn’t give him shit. Fuck him. He should be persona non grata to anyone affiliated with Oregon State after the way he has handled the Heimlich case. Again, FUCK HIM. He’s a fuckin’ scumbag.

      • That’s way too much effort for someone who doesn’t deserve said effort.

Always record any conversations with media or debt collectors. If you get a customer service rep who tells you that your call is being recorded for whatever reason, tell them you know this because you’re recording it too. You’d be surprised how quickly you get to talk to managers.

  24. One other thing from Omaha. A Sprinter RV adorned with Beaver stickers pulls into the parking space next to us by the stadium. The door opens up and holy crap, Luke Heimlich steps out!
It was not him, but the dude looked just like him and the really hilarious part was the next guy out looked just like Drew Rasmussen. So for about ten seconds I thought I was going to get a scoop from the horses mouth. Very good showing of Beaver fans in Omaha.

      • I was sober……at that time. The four guys all had official Beav lids on and I swear to god for a few seconds I thought it was Luke.

        • Shit, that would have been an amazing set up to have LH come sprinting out of an RV and on to the field to start the game. All of the ensuing controversy would have been worth it to see Canzano and Moran hyperventilating and crapping their pants in the press box!

  25. Hello from Omaha
1 – Beavers have largest fan following here with LSU a close 2nd.
2 – CSF fans are obnoxios so are FSU
3 – Adleys defense gave the spark that turned the game around, it energized the stadium.
4 – I think Casey knows more than all of us as to where each player should bat in the lineup
he is the national coach of a 55-4 team
5 – Many opposing fans have mentioned what a bum deal the LH situation is. Most have
    questioned the timing of article.
6 – It is amazing how hated the Ducks are throughout the country. Most everyone here in Omaha
have nice things to say about the Beavers and their fans and most all say how much they hate
    the arrogant Duck fans.
7 – The Beavs are going to have their hands full with LSU
8 – Omaha rolls out the red carpet for teams and fans.

    • 1. Our fans are awesome.
      2. Our fans sometimes need a Snickers too.
      3. I wasn’t kidding when I said I thought he was Scioscia pre-broken arm.
      4. He doesn’t. You can’t re-invent the wheel. Unless your C is Johnny Bench, put him in the 8 hole. And if you play in a pretend baseball league where the P doesn’t bat, put him in the 8 hole.
      5. Meh… it is what it is.
      6. You have to taint your list?
      7. They’re the next game.
      8. It is somewhat wonderful. I wish I could be there this year, but I would test positive for a legal substance, making me ineligible for a game I would have to pay to play on the college level.

  26. Been out all day, so maybe this has beem covered, but why does every Oregonian tweet about today’s win festure a picture of Cal State Fullerton players celebrating instead of the Beavs? Did they just see orange unis and figure those were Beaver players?
We really do have the shittiest coverage available from that rag.

    • Move over to the GT, they know the Beavs were in white today!

Two nice pieces there, this about the decision to go with Drew in the ninth,
Unsure about what to do, Yeskie sought a second opinion from assistant Pat Bailey. Casey ultimately told Yeskie to go with his gut.

“We just thought the leadoff hitter (Timmy Richards) was key and that was a good matchup for (Rasmussen),” Yeskie said. “At that point, (Bailey) and I were kind of on the same page. So we made the move, and after that you’ve got to live with it. You sit there and potentially second guess yourself…”

      And:
“(Mulholland) just carved, goes in, out, soft, firm,” Casey said. “And then he’s … really a contrast to the velocity of (Thompson), and I imagine that Drew looked like he was throwing 200 when he got in the game after (Mulholland’s) stuff.”

      http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/cws-mulholland-flawless-in-relief/article_0fc00509-e7e7-5ab1-a98b-98ad10b4ed8a.html

  27. ““(Mulholland) just carved, goes in, out, soft, firm,” Casey said. “And then he’s … really a contrast to the velocity of (Thompson), and I imagine that Drew looked like he was throwing 200 when he got in the game after (Mulholland’s) stuff.””

Fehmel followed by Rasmussen on Monday against LSU would provide the same velocity contrast, and may be part of the plan….

  28. Monday’s game will be another 5-6 run requirement. Not sure if Fehmel has another gem in him. The only thing going is none of these teams have seen him pitch (so hopefully another pleasant surprise ala Vandy), also makes me wonder if LSU has access to Fehmel’s last game.

  29. LSU has series losses to TAM, UK, and Florida — also lost to TCU and TTeCH. So right there you have about half of their season’s losses. Those are all quality opponents, of which three are still playing. This will be a tough one, but Beavs finally run out of gas.
    LSU 6-4 Hope I’m wrong again ;)

    • Starting to like your PAB routine, it works perfectly.

The amazing thing about this year’s team is they don’t run out of gas. They never give up. They just keep grinding. That’s all you can really ask.

  30. Is it day eight or nine now? Full page editorial on LH (by the Oregonian editorial board to be clear). Much softer on him as an individual, oddly equating him graduating from school next year as part of his “redemption”. Mostly goes after the university officials for being “disturbingly quiet” on admissions policies. Name checks Brenda Tracy again and calls out Ed Ray for being pro-active in that case, but no so much in the LH situation. OK? For the one millionth time, they are not comparable.

They did run a pro-LH letter to the editor buried in the middle of all of the other letters. Another ho hum entry that gets the fact incorrect about LH re-registering in Oregon. Saying something about it being a small mistake from LH, when by now we all know he did absolutely nothing wrong it was an error by the Corvallis Police, but overall saying he deserves another chance.

    • More reason to not read anything from the Oregonian, positive OR megative. They can’t get either right, so we shouldn’t be helping them pay the bills

      • Tell that to my wife, she has to subscribe to the print for her job and she appreciates the track and field coverage. I just read it and report! I’m not really into protests, sorry. I like to know what the enemy is up to at all times.

  31. Game vs LSU should be a good one. Rasmussen can get the call as soon as the 5th if needed. I would start considering it with as little as two runs. Beavs need to take a quick lead or stay tight.

On another note with SEC and B1G networks paying out so much more, what are chances any of these tech companies ever start treating the home Pac-12 with further support. Would seem like Amazon could do something to minimize the gap some. Will be interesting to see what happens when the TV contracts are getting closer to expiration and the Big 12 GOR is wnding. Some central timezone games and a couple of high value brands with good markets included are all the PAC Network needs IMO to be picked up for much wider distribution and with much higher paychecks to PAC members. Status quo can’t do much to narrow things but by 2023-2024 if PAC is smart they should get themselves far closer to even keel with the SEC and B1G.

Also see Utah is starting Men’s lacrosse as official sport in 2018-2019. I can see Oregon State adding it as well potentially for the next TV contract.

  32. LSU preview –

A real heavyweight match of powerhouse programs. There’s no reason to be pessimistic about this matchup.

LSU comes in red hot as well. 17 game winning streak, so one team is going to get theirs broken. The potential starter Walker struggled in SEC play. 4.74 ERA, 40Ks in 57 innings so not a strikeout guy. As a whole LSU hit .273 in SEC play and had an ERA of 4.10 so they aren’t exactly a juggernaut. Scored 176 runs in SEC play, Beavs scored 175 in PAC12 play.

    Some thoughts –
    1. Score first. Put the pressure on LSU.
    2. Grind out at bats and get to the starter early. I assume Poche will be available again with a one day break. After that, there’s not much left in the bullpen.
    3. Looks like nerves were high early on so that should not be a factor tomorrow. Offense will hopefully click earlier.
    4. Adley should be batting 7 or 8. Kind of like Grenier in the 9 hole to set up the top of the lineup.
    5. Hope a player like Cary can have a good offensive game. That would help immensely.

So I think Fehmel will get the ball tomorrow with Drew and Brandon in relief. Beavs are frontrunners, when they get the the lead, they don’t give it up. Fehmel won’t reproduce his gem from last week but if he can give 6, they should be ok. A win tomorrow gets the team to Friday which why Casey might have everyone available. This is a huge game.

    • 6. Dont serve up gopher balls early.

I dont get the notion of setting up the top of the lineup. If the batter is good at getting on base, put him in the top of the lineup to start the freakin game. But cant get the current position of Adley. Maybe coach is trying to develop him, or thinks he can break out. Hope he does, lol.

  33. “This is a huge game”

Yup. Same format as regionals. Win the first two and you’re in the cat bird’s seat. Whoever comes out of the losers bracket has to beat you twice. Not that it hasn’t been done before.

    Go Beavs!
