Biggest game of Jonathan Smith’s career? Big time statement possible (but not probable). Nonetheless…

Go Beavs!

Note: Washington’s D is anywhere from 40th to 57th depending what list you look at, so while they appeared physical in the games I watched, maybe they’re not so good after all. That seems pretty middle of the road. Let’s see if the stats lie.

  1. Chase Young (Ohio State sack leader) suspended one game for NCAA violation. Hoping Hamelcar adds to his sack total and makes a run at the national sack lead by end of the year (somebody’s got a trophy for this right?).

    • That won’t change only if he gets hit at the same rate as so far. Break his confidence and Beavs will get a pick, let him regain his confidence and…..

  2. Isn’t this where some coaches would let Luton watch JUST ONE series to see if it makes a positive difference in Luton’s play?

  3. What do you know? Luton can’t play against good defenses. 6’7 deer in the headlights. It’s almost as if someone on this blog called it all along..

  4. Imagine if on just one of those rpo’s, the qb could keep it and get a quick 7 yards. Makes second down manageable and the defense would have to stay honest instead of crashing down.

  5. Apparently I have football comprehension dyslexia. I understood that the Beavs’ defense sucked but the offense was sensational.

    • He got hurt 2-3 weeks ago and made the trip last week to Arizona, but the coaches feel the line is doing fine without him….clearly he needs to be put back into the starting role. Btw I’m on my second 7 and 7 and had a guiness stout already in the first half. So I’m feeling better than the Oregon state offense.

  6. Well, that just took the air out of the Beavers sails. Looks like the UW defense is more physical than our offensive line. Our defense is exhausted by now and can’t get rest from our offense. This game is on the offense 100%.

  7. I don’t know which is worse, the coaching or Luton. This is a winnable game if we had a qb. I do think we have to give credit to the defense and the defensive coaches.

      • Well they sure as hell tried to give it away by going for it on 4th down. If you know you are going for it going into the series then running the ball twice makes a tone more sense. If it doesn’t payout at least you kill the clock. JS showed that they had no plan there, complete impulsive move – that doesn’t bode well for his overall coach think.

    • Offense has abandoned the running game from the start. 20 passes for 70 yards and 15 passing for 41 yards. Luton had Hodgins on at least 1 throw away and he has a mental clock of 3-5 seconds before he throws it away regardless of having an additional 3 seconds to throw down field. Luton also didn’t step up into the pocket or tuck and run on 3 occasions. The defense is looking good enough to be in this game, but the the offense is so inept that it forces the defense to be out on the field more often than not.

  8. Our offensive line is being man handled. Not one offensive lineman is not getting their
ass handed to them. Add that to a qb who is scared and not mobile and you have a shit show
    like this.

  9. The defense has done everything that we and the coaches could ever ask of them. That half is probably the best half of defense they’ve played this season.

The offense, on the other hand, is just laying a gigantic egg. Some of it is Luton’s poor decision making, some of it is bad play calling (especially to start the game). Either Luton’s got to play smarter next half, or Gebbia should be put in his place.

  10. The defense is playing tough, but they are not getting any pressure on Eason, so I’m not optimistic about the second half. As others have mentioned, the play calling is horrendous. Run the ball on first and fucking second down, quite doing that stupid deep dropback on first down and have the immobile stork get sacked. The o-line is outmanned on pass protection. No reason to go for it on 4th down either time, especially with those shitty play calls.

    • There are some really crappy defenses at the bottom of the P-12. We have to remember the Beavs beat Cal with less than 300 yards of offense. Cal was incompetent on offense. Luton has never risen above the mean. In his defense, the play calling is not doing him any favors tonight either.

  11. Coach Smith is either arrogant beyond belief, too chicken shit to admit he’s wrong, or dumber than a box of rocks if he doesn’t realize you need a QB with mobility in the game when your O-line is being manhandled. You need to attack them with speed.

Luton is quite literally holding the program back every minute he plays but I guess that’s cool for Luton fans. At least the NFL scouts can check this guy off their lists.

    • It’s telling that the most success we’ve had against Washington’s defense so far is when we’ve picked up the pace against them, as well as when Luton got the ball out fast. The offense as a whole needs to move quicker, but Luton seems to be slowing them down for the most part.

  12. Was there even one non-pass first down in that first half. Keep doing that… I’m sure UW hasn’t noticed and will play run defense on 1st down. Seriously. I’d even settle for a screen pass on 1st down if you have to air the ball. 111 yards by offense in 1st half.

  13. This is on Smith. D playing best game of season and he:

    Goes on 4th down;
    Squib kick;
    Leaves Luton in.

D playing like this, think 4 QTRS, OT, not squibs, bad 4th diwn calls…

  14. So some smart couch coaches above say we need to run it on first down. AND there you go. Two running plays for no yards. Easy to be smart on your couch.

  15. So Choukair just can’t kick. He can’t kick accurately and he can’t kick far. They has to be someone who can kick it high in the air and far all on the same kick.

  16. Luton has been bad but our offensive line and play calling have been just as bad. It is time to
see if we can adjust and win this, Washington is leaving the door open for us.

  17. Well played by punt receivers, good thing the ball bounced as planned!
A drive for TD by the O could put UW in catch up mode and give them thoughts of last few weeks failure at the end of games.

  18. If you still think Luton is a good QB after tonight you seriously need your head examined. Folds like a cheap tent vs an above average defense.

D is gassed. This game was there for the taking.

    • Totally agreed. The play calling has been absolutely atrocious. I knew we’d lose as soon as the first play from scrimmage was a pass vs a run or screen or something that challenged the defense. Also the first 3 plays were passes and they gained about 2-3 yards total. This game is over and Washington will win this 28-10.

  19. Put Gebbia in and roll him out and give Washington something else to defend. Luton is no threat to run
and our offensive line is being man handled. Gebbia gives us a running threat that the Huskies would have
to respect. Now Washington just over powers our line and Luton curls up in a ball or throws it 2 yds when we need 5

    • Way past time to see what the other qb can do. Nothing to loose at this point. Crap we onside kicked it to start the second half. If that doesn’t say let’s try anything I don’t know what does.

  20. D has no depth and they’re dominating a good offense. While we probably lose this game (Smith Luton 3.0) just think of the progress on that side since game 1.

  21. Defense has flexed their muscles and played this the best they could and the offense is going to go 3 and out. Our offense was somewhat our strength, but now our defense is showing experience.

  22. BIG JIM calling for something to the middle of the field, seems the approach a 6’7″ QB could exploit? Gotta be quick though, OL can’t hold.

  23. Where is any kind of creativity on offense? Bubble screen? Try getting the ball outside?

Agreed with above posters. UW only has to stop the run. Which they have.

  24. The whole offense has given up. Our offense is so hot and cold. Hot when they have a team they can push around but cold when playing a team that is tough.

    • Why not Gebbia…..let think about that for .000001 seconds

Because Luton has 19 TDs and 2 picks on the season

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

      • But he’s in chuck the ball away mode just like he was against Utah. Doesn’t even try, the pocket sucks and he’s getting pressured and he’s not even looking around. Just get rid of it.

      • Luton put up good numbers vs. weak teams. He has never put up any good numbers vs. decent teams. He folds. Angry
called it before the season started and Luton keeps proving him right.

  25. Defense gets 2 interceptions, huskies miss 2 field goals, defensive touchdown

Sounds like a pretty good chance at a win right??

I think I saw Gebbia throw the blue penny on Luton.

  26. I cut the cord this year so haven’t had Pac-12 network. It’s funny but the last time a game was on FS1 I saw a Beavs with no defense. I finally get to see a game again and see a team with no offense but they have a defense. I will say my health is better without PAC-12 network. Maybe if I catch a game again next year I’ll see a team that brings a complete game to the field.

No run game and no time to throw would lead an intelligent fan to realize the O line was dominated. Not on this forum though. Now I see why Machado charges money to join her forum.

    • There’s plenty of blame to go around here. Vanilla play calling. O line sucking donkey cock. But UW had a brilliant game plan. Stop the run and make Luton beat them.

He couldn’t/can’t. Which many of us have seen. Over and over again. It’s no secret.

My question is why is the play calling so vanilla. Obviously it works against weaker defenses. But it’s hot garbage against above average defenses. Is it the players? The coaching staff?

Why the inability to make changes on the fly or at halftime? If it’s not working, why keep trying it?

I’ll say it again. When a defense is being aggressive and stacking the box to stop the run, where are the quick hitting passes?

Btw, on that throw back screen to Jefferson on the first play after UW missed a FG in the 4th quarter, the TE was WIDE fucking open down the middle with no one within 10 yards of him. I saw this and rewound the DVR and showed my wife. If I can see this? Luton didn’t even look. He looked right then immediately turned his head back 180 degrees and threw to Jefferson with a shit pass for a 5 yard loss.

It’s unreal you miss these little nuances. But we’re all morons and armchair QB’s.

Happened in the first half too. Looked at 17, covered. Spun 90° to the right and chucked a turd to AP who went nowhere. 81 was 10 yards away standing flat footed with his hands up waiting for the ball.

  28. Defense was awesome, were going to be monstrous over the next couple years. O Line is still not there but could be soon. QB is an obvious problem.

  29. Standing ovation for our defense and the D-coach. F- for offense and offense coach. Exited that maybe we will have a good defense next year.

  30. Jake Luton, a season high -34 yards rushing. That’s on the o-line too. Coaches have to work with what they have. Just like Hawaii game, I’m always going to wonder with if Gebbia gets a series or two. What do they have to lose?

  31. Huuuuuuuge props to the defense!!!! They straight up came out to play tonight…..showed tenacity and even scored to help out the O. That’s all I’m gonna say….gnight y’all!

Well that was fun. I’m goin to go sit in the car for a couple of hours before going to bed, to simulate the full game night experience.

Also….. how does the sound engineer know to play the chain saw effect, before every Husky first down?

  33. Random thoughts:

Sure, dawgs missed a couple passes on their own but didn’t the DB’s (including Hamilcar’s time back there) look the best they have all year?

Wasted a Bradford start, maybe he changed his mind and isn’t limiting himself to 4 games?

Most had this one as a loss from the start of the season, which of the final 3 games have match ups that provide good chance for wins?

    • Bend but don’t break moved to keeping it infront of you but attack. Pass defense was really good compared to well…forever ago

I see ASU and UO as the easier wins. Cougs are a super bad matchup.

  34. The O-Line was such a disappointment. I thought they were better than what they showed tonight. They’re going to have to close the gap at some point. I’m concerned that the Oregon game is going to be the same way.

    • They couldn’t match the physicality, just like Utah. Ducks are a better matchup because they are more fast than physical. Good technique can deal with speed. Nothing deals with a dude chucking you away like a ferbie.

  35. These P-12 matchups are so freakin’ weird. I watch this game and think how the hell did Stanford have almost 500 yards against UW and the Beavs can’t get a first down? Luton has only improved enough to not hurt the team against weaker competition. I guess that gets you four wins instead of two? Still a long ways to go. We are kidding ourselves if we say this game was competitive. It really wasn’t.

      • The offense made the game non-competitive. The stats would say the final score should have been a 30 point win. It was nice to see a defensive TD, but that’s not going to happen every game. Their kicker missed two makeable attempts. It was a dominating, but a sloppy performance by UW.

    • The defenses were competitive. Stanford could handle UWs physical presence on defense/offense…we can’t. We were too fast for Stanford and should have won

  36. Bold Prediction: Whittley is an absolute force next year and gets drafted in the 6th round. His conditioning isn’t there this year. I haven’t seen an OSU player get off the snap like that since Paea.
