    A new thread?………what a disappointment!
The last thread had a real possibility of taking the record from the dopey duck who pushed an earlier thread to 1,000. Bummer.

Our buddy, Josh, has a podcast up with Jabral Johnson. Now a cop in Clackamas County, Jabral weighs in on the vibe after Riley left (again) and doesn’t hide his frustration with the hand jiving Banker.

Some somewhat vanilla comments on being a black LEO as well.

    https://wordenjosh.podbean.com/e/jabral-johnson-football-2011-2014/

  2. I could definitely see a split season happening. Try to play as many games as possible before the season flu season. Then suspend the season until Feb or Mar and not have spring football.

I would guess players would wear masks. Shouldn’t be a big deal since players wear masks in cold weather games.

    • I wonder if all players just had plastic shield built into each helmet to the bottom of the helmet face mask if that would do the trick.

      • Jj watt commented on this mask idea and mentioned whoever suggests this hasn’t played football in Texas. I’m guessing it would be tough for breathing and handling heat. Maybe the beavs should just get all home games and no one should play at cali and Arizona schools.

    • College soccer has done a variation of this in the past. Of course, they don’t have to worry about the media commitments that football does.

  3. Texas results from Covid19 testing of their football team for their first week back to practice. 13 out of 58 athletes tested are currently positive with Covid19. That’s 22.4%, in case you’re wondering.
They also mention so far 4 additional athletes have tested as having Covid19 related antibodies in their blood(article doesn’t mention if they’ve tested all 58 athletes for antibodies, I’m surprised that number isnt higher if 13 athletes are currently positive.

That’s pretty crazy how high their numbers are though. Nearly 30% of the team has been confirmed as having or had the infection already.

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29329177/texas-says-13-football-players-test-positive-coronavirus

    • I’m actually surprised it isn’t more. We were all young once and the youth of today are no different. Mortality seems to be in the distant future when you are young you don’t fear death or health issues so much. This leads to activities that aren’t as “safe” as they should be. Youth do gather more in group settings and crave it. COVID-19 won’t hurt me or isn’t that big of a deal is the attitude I’ve observed.

        • Exactly – there still aren’t tried and true models for this damn thing but it appears, given their ages, the football players just need to keep us away from them.

I’ve heard that antibody testing is really bad right now. All one has to do to sell a antibody test is register with the FDA that they are selling them. Still the Wild West our the for testing, understandable that it takes time to flesh out these details but the feds are pushing incompetence to a new level.

    • And then Michigan State reports they have tested 127 S/As and had only 1 positive test result come back.

Not sure which scenario would be more desirable for actually having a football season.

    • That’s a great analogy.
The thing is, the ncaa athletes have parents (Karens?) who might not want them involved, and I can see a situation where some guys (Trumpers?) want to risk it, and some guys (snowflakes?) don’t.

      • My guess is the vast majority of the players will choose to play. Macho culture, you don’t want to let your team down, and barring a significant pre-existing condition, you realistically don’t have that much to fear as a ~20 year old in your physical prime.

As far as the ones who do opt out – I think the impact on the season won’t be that different from a normal season. Functionally similar to a fall camp with a higher-than-usual number of ACL tears.

        • It’ll be interesting to see what happens on that front. If players are given an option to sit out (maybe the NCAA gives them another year?), and if they do, how their teammates react to it. I’m not sure what I’d do. Tough call, so I guess I’ll just respect each players decision if they get to have one. If the NCAA tells them they can all make their own decisions, but they lose a year, it’ll put pressure on them to play, which would be pretty shitty.

          • If that whole rule change around making money off your own likeness is supposed to go into effect after January 2021, I’d be tempted to sit out this year if given the opportunity and use an extra year of eligibility to my advantage, to get a side hustle going.

This whole thing is a tough call. If player safety is the ultimate concern, we just wouldn’t let people play football. But given the low risk, coupled with the effects of arrested development from not having a season, are you hurting these S/As more by not allowing them to develop for an eventual career as a player/coach after college?
I know that really only apllies to a segment of the players, but it has to be considered.

I’m already worried about the long term effects on my elementary school aged kids if they have to do another year of online learning. As working parents, we just dont have the capacity to keep our kids on task all day, and they’re not old enough to be self disciplined enough to stay on task either. So they get another year to turn into mush watching youtube videos all day?

          • It’s not a gopd situation. The kids that will move ahead are the ones with stay at home parents who actually have the bandwidth and desire to keep up on their kids’ education.
I know of families where both parents are doctors, and they have really bright kids, hut those kids are now getting left behind because the parents are way too busy to also run homeschooling, and they’re always away from home.
At least in my career, I work from home already so i can take little breaks here and there to assist with the schooling.

And then there’s the families where the parents are home and have the capacity to help school their kids, but they just dont care to put in that effort. “Hey kids, another field trip to the head shop! Today we’re going to learn about horticulture….again”

  4. I can’t imagine the NFL not playing…they’ll find a way.

NCAA – not sure. Much more complicated, but the economics are just as compelling.

    • In the NFL, I wonder if COVID would generate more fanbase sympathy for holdouts. Maybe some players/agents could use the situation to strengthen their position – I’m guessing it would be a factor.

    • I can imagine a fall without football. Its just unfortunate to me that it occurs when Smith has the Beavers on the cusp of genuine competitiveness and there would be some very entertaining play on their part.

How about LA Rams/Chargers LV Raiders: new stadiums at crazy price tags….those stadiums might not be the future. Kind of funny….

  5. Interesting. The SEC is getting into a dick waving match with the state of Mississippi.
Saying they will not allow the SEC to play any SEC championship type games in that state so long as the state flag contains the confederate flag.
Of course there’s not much risk of either Mississippi school being in a championship game, so the state has time on their side.

    https://twitter.com/SEC/status/1273759965329731585?s=19

    • I believe there already is an NCAA rule banning Mississippi from hosting NCAA games. Some exceptions for non pre-selected site games like the first two rounds of the women’s tourney.

South Carolina was banned too but they can now after taking down the flag.

My 13-year-old son’s baseball team has actually started practicing. I’m not going to give any detail in case they are violating the governor’s order! I think they are using the “up to 25 people gathering to recreate” clause to justify. Apparently, there are tournaments being scheduled around the state and some have already filled up.

Sounds more like Hubbard is the coach now. I still don’t understand why he stayed for another year. Hard to see this ending well. I guess if there’s no football, it won’t matter anyway.

      • Wonder if the NFL would allow him in the supplemental draft? Not sure he qualifies. I know the rules used to require ineligibility or dismal from school to avoid a Bernie Kosar move from happening again but not sure what the new CBA says

Chubster is a crybaby little bitch. Gundy is a little bitch for caving to the demands of the cancel culture perpetually offended by anything they deem “racist”. Which in this case is a crock of shit.

I feel like if you don’t want to get into a row about identity politics it would be wise to not wear a shirt for a news station that specializes in identity politics.

        15

        Lol, OAN is 100% racist.

        It’s white nationalist propaganda television.

The fact you don’t know this is hilarious to me.

        • 2
          2

Gundy is quoted, in April, as saying (paraphrase) he had ‘discovered a radio station – just news, not right, not left’ and really liked it

          9

The fact that your OPINION is gospel in your opinion is hilarious.

If OAN were racist as you claim it wouldn’t be allowed on TV.

Be that as it may, dont like the shirt? Don’t wear it. Don’t like OAN? Don’t watch it. Seems pretty simple.

            5

When is racism banned from TV? What the fuck are you even babbling about?

You are defending a channel that tells you they are lying but believe them anyway.

            Seriously, fucking awesome

  7. Anybody have any history podcast recommendations for me from Spotify? Looking for WW2/Korean war or maybe adventure/expedition types like lewis and clark, Teddy Roosevelt, . I’ve listened to all of Dan Carlins podcasts, I like his style but I’m up for anything. The longer and detailed the better. Thanks

  8. NCAA stepping up pressure on Mississippi.

The exception that it could host NCAA tournament games if sites were not pre-selected is gone. Can’t host women’s first and second rounds, no regionals or super regionals for baseball anymore.

    • “They’re 19-21 year olds, they can handle it. We need to get the money flowing through colleges again.” – Mike Gundy (Paraphrased)

Looking worse and weirder by the day for the season and in person games. Shame if this virus impacts our likely Rose Bowl run! We’ve got the right stuff now and Smith keeps adding to the wealth of riches.

As for basketball, really saw tons of progress last year, they were playing best when it mattered and fighting for the coach! They seem to be loaded with talent as well.

I am not an expert, thank you for your opinions.

  10. Can check Jaws off my list. Good flick, thanks for the recommendation.
Any other can’t miss movies from that era that I need to check out? Mid 70’s to early 80’s time frame?

Maybe we should start an AB movie of the week club.

    • 3
      2

Awesome glad you were able to watch it. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time.

Here some of my other recommendations that fall into the 70s / 80s:

      Blade Runner
      The Terminator films 1 & 2
      The Godfather trilogy
      Evil Dead 1 & 2
      Halloween
      Friday the 13th
      Taxi Driver
      Die Hard
      Christine
      The Shining
      Stand by Me
      The Thing
      Full Metal Jacket
      Apocalypse Now
      The Princess Bride

So many more to list but that’s just a quick list of my personal favorites.

      • Some more good recommendations. Have seen and liked quite a few from this list actually.
        I still need to see:

        Evil Dead(both)
Taxi Driver(been on my list forever but never watched it yet)
        Princess Bride
        The Thing

I guess i’ve seen more movies from that era than i thought, except some were the edited for tv versions.

      • All are great recommendations. Evil Dead is a classic slasher/horror flick and I feel The Thing is an underrated classic. I would also add:

        The Road Warrior
        Escape from New York
        Red Dawn

        • 3 more movies I’ve only seen very limited clips from, but never the full thing.
I actially started re-watching that Mad Max Fury Road movie last night. So good. Will be good to go back and rewatch Road Warrior now

    • Horror or any genre?
I think the best movie of the 70s was All the President’s Men.
Dog Day Afternoon, Chinatown, and Network are also great. I assume you saw The Godfather?

There were actually 3 Evil Deads. Evil Dead 2 is the best, but part 3 is called Army of Darkness. I think it’s better than Evil Dead 1.

      • Horror actually is pretty low on my list. I dont mind a good suspenseful scary movie, but never really saw the point in the slasher genre.
Of the films you listed, I’ve only seen the Godfather. Chinatown has been on my list for years and the others I really dont know much about, so will be good to try something with zero expectations going in.

Great list for the 1970s. I would add “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Kramer vs. Kramer and American Graffiti. I saw a huge percentage of 70’s movies as a kid as the local theater showed double features for 99 cents after the first run was over.

        • Yeah I agree. Cuckoo’s Nest is amazing, but it’s so depressing…….especially Billy.
If you want to go down that route, Deer Hunter is another awesome but depressing movie from that era.

I couldn’t get into Kramer. Maybe I have to try it again. Was the Graduate late 60s? Still worth seeing if you haven’t. I can’t remember if I’ve seen American Graffiti…I feel like I must have, but nothing comes to mind. I’ll have to add it and re-watch.

          • 6
            1

The Graduate was later 60’s, but they ran it at my theater as some sort of revival. Amazing I liked Kramer. I was a product of a divorce, so maybe that was the appeal? Dustin Hoffman was everywhere in the ’70s. Marathon Man is another great Hoffman flick.

Black Sunday if you want terror mixed with sports! Also, Clint Eastwood made a lot of great movies in that era, especially the westerns.

      • Little Bigman with Dustin Hoffman. Great characters and dialogue, great humor alternated with occasionally shocking scenes.

Jeremiah Johnson. Robert Redford. Silence, cinematography.

The Black Stallion. Good family film, but also uses silence well (so rare).

        • 5
          2

Good call. I saw both in the theater. I was pretty young when I saw Little Big Man, a lot went flying over my head.

I never liked horses! Fell off one when I was five and sustained a compound fracture! Never saw Black Stallion.

          • Ha fucking horse bit me on the foot when I was about that age. Was up on the fence feeding it apples and it decided my foot looked better. Hated those fucking things ever since.

      • Army of Darkness is one of my all time favorite movies.

And in case you didn’t know there was a new series on one of the movie channels a few years ago that is a continuation called Ash vs Evil Dead and it’s fucking awesome.

    OkayState situation –

It’s first ammendement, free market and capitalism.

    1) You can say what you want but you can still recieve reprecussions for what you say or represent.

    2) The consumer is free to choose who and where it spends capital on. Businesses and institute who wish to have consumer capital need to be mindful of the consumers wishes. Moral stances are very difficult for a business to make. Standing for a principle can be devestatinh if it drives away consumers but can also grow consumer base or create loyalty.

    3) part of bussiness and capitalism is creating products that consumers want. Being good at capitalism is not wasting resources on features and development that does not increase profits.

The response to this case has been mismanaged. The coach should have made a statement that explains a few things before players and the public had time to chime in.

    1) I am not racist.
    2) It was a mistake to wear the shirt. I am sorry if it offended fans, players, recruits or anyone who calls OKST home.
    3) My choice of shirt does not encompass who I am or my views. It does not reflect the views of the University of who I am a representative. I will learn from this one xperiemce and thank everyone who has taken the time to explain why this was offensive.

Not doing this has created trenches of a battle that must be weathered or ends in people disassociating from the University. It makes no sense for OKST to defend OAN. They have no control of message that way. If they lose players they devalue their product. If they lose fans they lose profits. If they lose the coach they are in a search at about the worst time possible and likely devalue the product. They screwed up now they have to pick between bad options.

    • 12
      2

Also, either Gundy is truly stupid or he’s playing dumb now which probably makes the situation worse. It takes about two minutes this day and age to figure out a media outlets politically bent. He wants us to believe he just started following OAN randomly because it was refreshing? Give me a break!

There are a few college football coaches who have out of control egos who thought they were untouchable. Life has changed. Dabo Sweeney better lay low and I’m waiting for Mike Leach to fuck up again.

      • NCAA football is not about capitalism; it’s about shaping young STUDENT-athletes into educated men who are thereafter empowered to contribute to society in many positive ways.

        • When has that ever been true, though? Other than in theory/an idealistic world. It’s all about profit. ESPN/Disney et al own the rights, etc.

          • To answer the question on when it has ever been true?

Ivy League? Harvard, Yale, and Princeton at the very least essentially volunteered to give up the income they probably could still be making (like Stanford, Northwestern, etc…) if they wanted too.

          • I was going to answer similarly. EARLY on, I think it was viewed as an extra-curricular activity and about physical fitness and training more than income to support the university.

youngorst Ivy League refernece reminds me there was an east coast team that came out to play Oregon State in the early 1930s or something like that. Because fans could not practically/affordably travel back then, the OSU student body voted to have a number of students designated to cheer for the visitors. Can’t remember where I read that, some OSU site…

Definitely not happening in the age of ESPN, branding, selfies…

But yeah, my obvious sarcasm aside, its been awhile since the game was primarily about student development. Decades ago there was unethical recruiting as they game became more about money and prestige…

          • 1
            5

This is honestly one of the reasons I hate the playoff.

When the Rose Bowl was the only goal that mattered, it really didn’t matter if the SEC made all their players take 12 credits of basket weaving or not.

You could argue that what the Big Ten did mattered but of course at that time the Big Ten was much more similar to the PAC 12 culturally but now the Big Ten is basically the SEC too.

I’d be fine with the PAC 12 keeping scholarships but upping the standards and playing 11 games vs each other and 1 OOC game with the champion going to the Rose. The problem is finding a partner conference (also not sure the Rose would be willing) that would do something similar because that conference is no longer the Big Ten.

I know I am in the minority on that but I actually believe it could earn the PAC more revenue than chasing the playoff does. And it would be better for the student athletes of the PAC 12 which is what should matter. And of course the players should be allowed to earn money for their likeness.

        • Yeah but it’s not really. It is critical for almost every athletic department. No football and sports basically die at the college level.

  12. I dare to recommend outside the 70s/80s box – 2011 ‘United’ – about the Manchester United/Munich airplane crash. Historical, good characters, new subject, new names (for me). Sir Bobby Charlton, is only present surviving member of the team. His record for most goals was broken by Wayne Rooney – a significant span.

Up above someone mentioned how the Red Cross is incentivizing the donation of blood by offering antibody testing. Good for them. Among the many mis-steps the last few months has been the delay and inefficiency and reported inaccuracy of anti-body testing. That data is the THE key missing data point that would bring a lot of clarity (and I believe calm) to public discussion of Covid 19. One theory, which to me seems likely, is that the virus is far more widespread than believed, especially since there is increasing evidence that the epidemic broke out in late October or early November, not mid-December as is commonly assumed. Even the first cases in this country have been documented to around last Christmas.

All that said, the misinformation, that still surrounds news coverage of the outbreak is astounding. Like for example, more and more athletes, young people by definition, are showing up on the “case” list. How many times does it need to be said that the number of cases is far less consequential, in terms of terminal outcomes, than hospitalization? It still remains the case that more people over 100 years old have died from this than people younger than 30. Think about that, combined with the fact that the senior death rate was expedited by nursing home care bungling early on, especially in the Northeast.

And then there’s the continued misunderstanding surrounding the proposition that “everyone is at risk of catching the virus.” This is, in fact, the case, just like everyone is at risk of getting struck by lightning or getting in a car crash. The appropriate question is how you manage the risk. For example, you leave the golf course when you hear thunder and you don’t drive drunk. Also, you stay away from close contact with people indoors, especially if you are old with underlying conditions. You are perhaps 10,000 times more likely to die from the virus if you are over 80 than if you are 20, the median age of our college athlete population. A lot more people can and will catch the virus, that is, become a “case,” but far fewer of those will get “sick,” far fewer of those will need hospitalization, far fewer of those will die, especially because it seems we have a couple of therapeutics and have learned not to over-utilize ventilators. In the vortex created by the focus on the increase in the “case rate” the news that the “death rate” is decreasing gets lost.

Oh, and here’s the answer to why the case rate is rising in the southern half of the country. It’s getting hot and people are spending more time indoors to take advantage of the air conditioning; the quest for physical comfort is putting people in closer contact. One thing we have learned in three months is that that the virus doesn’t spread very well outdoors, like on football fields and the stadiums that hold them.

  14. Anybody else have inlaws who insist on bringing their big dumb dog with them whenever they come to visit? Even when it’s pouring rain outside so the big dumb dog is also muddy and and gets too excited to control it’s bladder when it comes inside?
Or if you are the inlaws who do this, just leave the big dumb muddy pissing dog at home for a change.

    • 8
      1

Do they ask if they can bring the dog? If not, it sounds like one of those “Dear Abby” questions. Are you risking pissing them off to tell them to leave the dog at home?

      • They just dont go anywhere without their dog. So if we want to do something nice like host them for lunch for a father’s day treat, the dog is a given headache we’ll have to deal with. Originally the plan was to host them but hang out outdoors, but mother nature didn’t like those plans.

Not really fair to the dog either, because it basically has to hang out in one room of our house all day and has nowhere to stretch it’s legs. It would probably rather just play in the rain all day.

      • That may slip out at some point today. They havent arrived yet, so maybe I’ll get surprised and they’ll decide to leave it home for a few hours for the first time ever. Probably the best father’s day gift i could receive.

        • 1
          20

The next dog I meet I don’t want in my house will be the first dog I meet that I don’t want in my house.

Dogs are the greatest gift the human race was ever given. Cleaning up a some mud or a little pee (I don’t have carpet anywhere in my house) is a small price to pay.

          But to each their own.

          • 19

Of course, if I were in a similar situation I’d probably ask to dog sit the dog when possible and train the dog to treat my house the way I want and would prevent both those things over the long run.

        • NiceBeav: like Youngorst implied, it’s a cultural difference. I think most people would agree that bringing a dog to someone’s house uninvited is tacky, but there’s a definite subculture that just doesn’t think that way.

So, there probably needs to be a conversation if the behavior is going to change. Would probably be easiest if your wife had that conversation, but most important is that you have it in a planned and respectful way, and not in an unplanned angry outburst. Just my two cents!

          • I agree and also admit I probably could’ve said it better.

One of the reasons I choose to live in Bend is because it’s a great city for dogs.

I get that not everyone feels the same.

But I think you can teach the dog to follow your house rules, my dog knows the rules if 3 different houses and follows them.

    • That is odd to me how people just assume its ok to bring their pet without asking. I can’t imagine visiting friends/family, bringing my kid’s cat, and just imposing and acting like its ok. “Oh, you have a dog? Could you put it outside? Oh, you have allergies, could you take some allegery meds? My daughter’s cat is really important to her. Where’s your litter box by the way?” eye roll…

      • 18

I never assume but honestly if a family member wants me to visit my dog is coming. If they don’t want the dog to come I have plenty of other options for my time.

To be clear, I am not saying people don’t have the right to not want other people’s pets at there homes but in my world (friends and family) it is basically assumed that everyone isn’t just bring their kids to family events but the dogs will be there too.

      • I was once in an airport shuttle with a passenger carrying a cat. The woman said she travelled a lot, had 3 cats and it was this one’s turn for a trip. I had no response – still don’t.

        • 2
          12

          Yeah, I wouldn’t either.

I don’t know, I was just raised in a culture where dogs have just always been around. When I was a kid we lived in a small neighborhood where everyone knew each other and at any given time you might have 5-6 dogs in your yard even though we only had 1 dog.

We also had neighborhood ducks and were free to roam from yard to yard. They usually went wherever the dogs weren’t.

          Redmond in the 80’s….LOL.

          • This kind of thing happens all the time to us with other people’s kids. They bring them with them without asking us, then their kids run all over our house breaking shit and making a mess. We don’t do the same with our dogs (which are our kids). We ask before bringing them with us, if they prefer then we leave them home. If we bring them then we also bring what we need to keep them entertained and well behaved. It’s just about respecting someone else’s home. I guess we learned those manners from our parents.

          • There is a difference between going for an adult dinner vs. family gathering which is more what I felt NB was implying.

I’d always expect kids at a family gathering (or similar friend gathering).

I’ve never taken my dog somewhere I knew she wouldn’t be welcome but if I am invited to say a family BBQ, in my family it is assumed kids and dogs are welcome.

          • Could be. I think the main issue is behavior. It doesn’t matter if it’s kids or dogs. If they are well behaved and don’t ruin stuff, then most people don’t care if they come to their home (except maybe people with allergies). But if I know your kids or your dogs are going to ruin my stuff, I’d prefer you left them home or with a sitter until you have properly trained them.

They want to be lied too, it is what makes them feel safe.

Foxnews lawyers in court even admit their primetime hosts lie and claim their viewers don’t expect “the truth” from shows they watch on FoxNEWS

      https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/fox-news-lawyer-suggests-no-reasonable-viewer-would-think-tucker-carlson-is-news/

For the record, I agree with he headline, no “reasonable” viewer would believe Carlson is news but that is the whole point, “reasonable” viewers don’t get watch Foxnews.

        From the linked article:
“MSNBC lawyers argued along these very lines when defending host Rachel Maddow against a defamation lawsuit that was filed by One America News Network (OAN). “

        Just sayin’

        • 4
          19

And? Have you seen me defend MSNBC at anytime?

You see, that is the problem with whataboutism, shitty behavior from others doesn’t defend the shitty behavior you support.

But it is all conservatives have left, at this point the Republican Party platform is “we trigger libs”

          But you do you.

      • Meh. That’s a crappy argument. All media is biased. You can point out Fox, then throw up your hands when the same left slant from other outlets is exposed. So not “whataboutism” but “isaiditfirstism.”

        • 1
          15

You do understand that you can have a political bias without distorting the facts right?

          For example:

It is a fact that the climate is changing.

It would be one thing to be like the Republicans were prior to 2009 and believe the free market can solve the problem.

But flat out denying the problem even exists is not “bias” it is denial of objective reality.

The fact that people in SF pulled down a statue of Ulysses S. Grant is an indictment of history education in America.

While no man is perfect, Grant did as much or more to free slaves and work towards their equality than any President in US history including Lincoln.

Of course, we can put said statue back up. Keep taking down the statues of literal traitors please. Let those that call themselves “patriots” die on the hill of defending the statues of traitors.

    • 4
      4

We should start destroying Columbus memorabilia. That guy is a way bigger dickhead than Grant.
US History is a joke. I want my four years of study back. If I had spent that time learning woodworking, soldering, plumbing, etc I’d be SO much better off. Those “dirtbags” who took up a trade wound up being the geniuses. That’s how it was viewed in my school in my era…anyone doing a trade was somehow lesser. That’s why we didn’t do them. Man…so dumb. Now I’m scrounging around YouTube trying to learn the basics of trades.

Knowing about George Washington crossing the Delaware hasn’t made me or saved me a dime. Useless drivel.

      • 2
        17

Couldn’t agree more, we celebrate a guy that was never in the USA and was directly and indirectly responsible in creating the slave trade AND the genocide (both intentional and unintentional) of millions of Native Americans with Columbus Day (Oregon doesn’t but still). It is absurd.

I come to a slightly different conclusion though, rather than having people not learn history we should actually teach the real history.

We should also teach more trades but we can do both if we want to.

      • Trade schools are undervalued, underattended, and underfunded. When our crumbling infrastructure goes, I’m not sure we’ll have the folks to build it back up. Big contacts are more concerned with zip code hiring and other quotas and not enough on skilled labor. Our workforce is old. Interesting times ahead.

      • “History is bound to repeat itself” I am kind of a history nut, eat it up and appreciate previous generations and their sacrifices to get us to where we are now ( or maybe we were a couple years ago) I get that there is way more important skills out there to learn, but I get your point Angry.

    • They pulled down a statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn, i think in St Louis. Probably because he owned all those slaves.
And they also spray painted and defaced a civil war memorial to the 54th Massachusetts volunteer regiment. Thing is the 54th was a decorated all black unit that fought at Gettysburg.
This thing has morphed from civil protest to willful destruction.

      • 3
        1

Some people seem to think they should approve of history. That’s not the point of it. What happened happened. People should know the good and the bad and try not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

What was good for one group was often bad for another group. One groups hero is another groups villain.

        • I agree with this, but so many people feel the need to make a point that they are good because they disapprove of what someone did hundreds of years ago. They can’t just say “yeah that person did some bad stuff” and move forward. It’s much easy to condemn bad ideas and behavior than it is to come up with new ideas and teach good behavior.

        • 1
          4

What happened happened is true, doesn’t mean you build statues to traitors though….unless you are a supporter of the confederate cause…

David Morris, quoted in the GT says, “We had to go through a whole extensive thing to even get into the facility, So I felt really good having that kind of precaution just to even walk through the doors of Valley Football Center… our strength staff was doing everything they can to make sure we’re staying safe and I felt comfortable doing the workout…”

Total bullshit about protestors. WTF drugs are you guys on? Glad your leader can do nothing but litigate, tweet and fire people without cause. My grand daughter, who will be a senior in high school, told me that she and all her friends were ordering tickets to the rally. S It seems to have been common knowledge for that set. She had a ticket on her phone.

She, along with many of these students, will be able to vote on 11-3. I’m proud of my little activist.

They do this to prevent people from going to the rally that wanted to go to the rally.

Thanks for upholding a fair election. Maybe on Election Day they can send out misinformation to republicans on where to vote.

          • This was an uncapped event, anybody who wanted a ticket could get one. All this did was give the Trump campaign inflated data on their expected attendance number, it didn’t prevent a single person that wanted to attend from doing so.

          • 3
            5

Lol, no one was prevented, unlimited tickets mean unlimited tickets.

All this prank did was inflate Brad’s numbers and skew the data mining.

This is the exact stuff I get sick of… Okay OAN is racist, Trump is racist but explain how? Name one action that he has done that you would consider racist?… I assume you are just going off of what he says, which I agree, has sounded blatantly racist at times… But I am a person who judges off of actions, not words… While Trump has been in office, the unemployment rate for Africa Americans hit a all time low in September(COVID has changed that for everyone), African-American poverty is at a record low, and arrests of African Americans has trended downward… All i am saying is if he truly is a racist, he’s not very good at it

          • 6
            2

I mean there is an entire wiki page devoted to it. Seperating words and actions is misguided. People can be hurt by words and obviously a powerful persons words can lead to other people taking action. David Duke rarely took any action besides wearing a robe and yelling at a mic, he must not be racist? NWA made fuck the police but those are just words and lead to no action?

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_views_of_Donald_Trump

          • You haven’t heard about his housing discrimination practices? This one is super easy to look up.

And you agree he “has sounded blatantly racist at times” do you know anyone that sounds racist, that isn’t? Do you think that is a schtick? Just feeding his base? Then you would also agree his base is racist?

All I was saying was life for African Americans has improved in some aspects under Trump. The problem I have is they label him racist. Yet in every one of these liberal run cities (San Francisco, Chicago, New York, etc.) life is terrible for African Americans, police corruption, poverty, the list goes on and on. These are cities that have been controlled by Democrats. The words they say don’t reflect their actions or the results. So where does that leave us, we have two shitty candidates again for the umpteenth time and a never ending cycle of discrimination that is indeed perpetuated by Democrats and Republicans alike. I rather someone be racist to my face, then do it behind my back. I think it is way less honorable to use black people as a voting tool as the democrats do. It’s shameful, these people aren’t out to help them, they want to keep them down simply for their vote. orangejulius, I’ll address your point about people who sound racist but actually aren’t later this evening.

          • 6
            1

Pretty much all republican presidential candidates are accused of being racists.

It’s part of the oppositions political play book.

          • Hmmm, thinking back…Romney, no; McCain, no; Bush 41 or 43, don’t recall hearing that…Which pres candidate was painted as a racist or more to the point, which GOP pres candidate has had blatantly racist overtones ( by your own admission) aside from Trump?

          • Replied to wrong thread… Yes, it happens in every primary I have ever witnessed. And that’s on both sides. Your point?

        • Romney and Bush 41 were. McCain was accused of being racist against Asians, at least.

Bush 43 seems to have been left unscathed, aside from the allegations that all the post 9/11 stuff was “racist” against everyone from the Middle East.

@orangejulius Give me a break, look at Katrina. The left blasted him as racist for his response. I don’t know where you get your information, but this a day one tactic for the democrats. It is nothing new, quit denying it.

          • LOL, no the left didn’t.

But keep believing everything is a left wing conspiracy against conservatives. Guess that is easier than admitting you support a fascist.

          • 5
            1

I knew the parrot would chime in at some point. Here is an exercise for you, google “George W Bush Racist Katrina”, and then tell me what you find. I am not going any further until you do. This was a large issue. I am guessing you were just a child when this went down. I will admit, i am a bit shocked that you didn’t know this, you seem to know everything. I think it goes to show, you only look up what you want to hear and if it doesn’t fit your narrative you reject it. Who does that sound like? Sounds a lot like the guy you are criticizing. Take a look in mirror, do some research, and get back to me.

Also, I like how you just assume that I support Trump, I never said that, I just don’t think he is the racist the media and left is making him out to be. I am not a fan of the guy but the Democrats made this choice easy for me. Joe Biden is literally the last person I would vote for.

          • 1
            6

No, but if calling people racist bothers you so much why aren’t you mad at Trump for calling Biden racist?

I have no doubt a bunch of idiots on the internet called Bush racist and you listened to Ruch and Hannity rant about those idiots on internet and decided they represented the entire left.

Rhetorical question, I know your answer.

And I do assume you support Trump because you said this “I am not a fan of the guy but the Democrats made the choice easy for me” which strongly implies you plan to vote for Trump.

You do understand that that is literally the definition of supporting Trump?

If voting for someone isn’t supporting them, what is?

I am genuinely curious what you think supporting someone means if it isn’t voting for them.

            Seriously….

          • I don’t think Bush was criticized for racism* as much as the city planning, historical segregation, etc. came to light. Of course the same thing resurfaced with every other natural disaster (like Harvey).

*In the media, academia, etc. I can easily find links to sources accusing McCain, Romney, etc. of being racist, but GW is harder to pin down.

          • 5
            3

@youngorst It bothers me because that is an accusation that has no merit in the aspect of the presidency. Again, what action has Trump implemented in his time as President that you consider racist? This is just a ploy of the Dems, if they can convince everyone he is racist, no one will vote for him. You don’t have to think deep, its not a conspiracy, it’s called a strategy.

Again, here you are assuming that I listen to Fox News or even care to. No, I can think for myself and I do my own research. Which means, guess what? I can form my own opinion that is separate from any of two parties that don’t represent me. Maybe you should try that, I have found that thinking for yourself can be very beneficial.

It seems you have trouble breaking down issues that are gray and require a little critical thinking, so I’ll give you a black and white example. How can I vote for Trump and yet not support him? It’s simple, the choice I am faced with in November is either cutting off my entire hand (Biden) or cutting off my index finger (Trump). Neither are the choice I want to make but I’d rather keep my hand. I am guessing you are so aligned with whatever party you support, that you love this two party system. It makes things real simple for you, not much thinking involved, I get it.

          • 4
            1

A black person was dragged to death in Texas when bush was gov. When he was running for Pres the opposition ran a commercial about it.

Like I said, it’s part of there play book.

          • Whatever you say man, whatever you say.

I am not going to try to convince you of something you will never believe no matter how much evidence gets presented so why would I even bother?

Trump is an authoritarian. Trump is a fascist.

You support a fascist. Simple as that. Good for you I guess.

But don’t try to tell those of us living in reality that Trump (who is obviously racist) isn’t racist.

And even if Trump isn’t racist (again he clearly is) all the racists in America believe he is racist so why would I support the person the racists support?

Pretty adorable you claim I am the one with issues breaking down issues that are gray though, if you say so.

And again, if you vote for Trump, you support Trump. Voting is the definition of support. But sure, I am the one not thinking.

You are awesome, wonder why I literally had no clue you existed prior to today. Thanks for the entertainment.

          • 5
            1

The truth is, you have no evidence, otherwise you would have said so. You have his words in or out of context and somehow you believe that counts as evidence. And you are right, you will not convince me without at least some evidence.

Quit focusing on Trump, tell me why Biden is such a good candidate and why I should be compelled to vote for him? Sounds like you are going to vote for him and by your definition that means you support everything about him. So let’s hear about all the great things he is going to do for our country. And I am sure you are all about sniffing peoples hair and having young boys rub the hairs of your leg. By your definition if you vote for them, you support everything about them, so it means you like it too. Again using your definition.

          • Whatever you say…..

I’ll just re-link the same source that nuclearbeav posted and you have already chosen to ignore

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_views_of_Donald_Trump

And why would I stop focusing on Trump? Trump is attempting to destroy our democratic republic and replace it with a oligarchy. If you support that, good for you. People who love America don’t support fascism. Simple as that.

Do love the attempt to claim Biden is a pedophile though, you do know Donald Trump has actually been sued for raping kids right?

The cognitive dissonance it must take for you to attack Biden for the things Trump actually does it impressive. Truly impressive.

Side note: when did I claim supporting a candidate by voting for them means “you support everything about him”?

Seriously? How high are you right now?

This is the behavior I expect. Deflect and never answer my questions to try and change the conversation. That link is rhetoric not policy, so get out of here. Plus its wikipedia, not a very trustworthy source, anyone can edit those articles.

It’s apparent you are blindly supporting Biden. So you think it’s normal as a stranger, to sniff little girls hair, and you excuse that behavior? The difference is, this is all on tape, I can show you the evidence. I wouldn’t let you near a child if you feel that is okay.

I was just going off of your definition, sorry, maybe you should change it. Be cool if you answered my questions too. But I assume it’s pretty hard to make Biden look good without bringing trump into it.

          • You ask for a link, I give you a link, then you claim I am deflecting. So predictable.

LOL at Wikipedia not being trustworthy, literally sounds like something a teacher told you in 2004…..Everything on wikipedia is sourced when people edit without a source it gets deleted/changed back. Seriously, you can go to the direct sources at the bottom of the wikipedia page.

I support Joe Biden for the job of President of the United States because I am not a science denier (climate change is real), I believe women have the right to control their bodies, I believe in union rights, etc….

I could list significantly more reasons why I prefer Joe Biden for the job of President of the United States but to be honest since Trump is literally a fascist, Biden not be a fascist is enough for me. It should be enough for all Americans.

My definition means I support Biden for the job of President, not I support everything about Joe Biden. But I am the one that does not see the gray areas, lol.

Honestly, you can have the last word here. This is just too stupid of a conversation to continue. I’m gonna go outside. Have a great day. I get it, you love Trump. It’s cool. Bye.

          • 6
            1

I would have let it go and let you have the last word but you had to throw the “you love Trump” accusation. So I just want to be clear on where I stand for others.

I don’t deny climate change and am in favor of some regulation but not over regulation. Biden has a shaky record on this issue particularly. His rhetoric sounds different from his actually voting record (Typical)

I am all for pro choice and is a big issue I have with Republicans. Seems silly and terrible to me to have more kids born into poverty and to parents that don’t want them. This creates troubled people in world and continues peoples reliance on welfare. Something that Republicans aren’t too keen on, yet they want more kids in the world. Population also relates directly to climate change as well.

Basically, you believe Trump is fascist and you seek out any information to support that. Yet, throughout history, the majority of fascists were left leaning politicians. Not exactly like Democrats in America, because most countries don’t have a stupid two party system. That being said, many of these fascists leaders ideas are directly the same rhetoric the left uses in America. Believe what you want, I just hope someday you wake up and realize that neither Democrats or Republicans are the answer.

            5

Trump is considered so gross that lifelong Republicans are actively running ads against him.

Have you ever seen a candidate from a party have ads from their same party run against them? As a sitting POTUS?

          • The bar to be a registered republican or Democrat is very very low.

Both party’s have people in them that their own party members despise.

No. No they haven’t. I’m not talking about primary opponents. I’m saying the sitting POTUS, as the nominee of their party, having members of their party actively promoting the other party’s guy. That doesn’t happen.

            Trump is flawless.

Waste of time to argue with people that think fascism is a left wing ideology, anyone stupid enough to support Trump in 2020 is a lost cause.

Ugh, he isn’t talking about political opponents challenging in a primary, why is this so complicated?

There are literally groups of Republicans, people who have been part of Republican campaigns and the national committee that are actively pushing for Joe Biden.

But keep telling yourself it is just libs upset Hillary lost.

          • Teddy Roo ran against the republican president and the dem candidate. Had to create his own party (the bull moose party I believe) to do it.

Biden sniffing hair is an offense to you? And 15-25 (dependent on source) women accusing Trump of sexual misconduct isn’t a concern. “I grab them by the pussy” was a joke? Probably similar to the “slow down the testing” joke. Rumors (I repeat rumors) of associating with Epstein parties is a joke?

as Joe would say, “come on man”

One reason to vote for Joe—he’s going to fill his Cabinet with competent, experienced people. Trump is on his 3rd and 4th string. Can you imagine who’s next? Javanka?

          • DJT : “I told my people to slow down the testing”

            Trump handlers: “He was joking”

DJT : 6/23 when asked about if he was joking…”I don’t kid”

Through experiment I have found out anything is downvotable. I guess we should be kind and assume it was an accident haha

Downvoting has always been a mystery. Does it mean someone doesn’t like the opinion expressed? Does it mean they don’t like the general theme? Does it mean they don’t like the facts/information being passed along? Does it mean they don’t like the spelling errors? Does it mean they just don’t like the person who posted? Or does it mean they tapped a vote button by mistake while scrolling on their phone? The only person who knows the meaning of a up/down vote is the voter, so they’re pretty meaningless. Now, let the downvoting commence!

Pretty sure it’s a couple of boners that don’t like certain posters that follow them around like jaded ex girlfriends and automatically downvote everything posted.

I have one. I named her Debbie Downvoter.

A fun experiment would be to show the users who are downvoting or upvoting. I am sure you’d see Youngorst downvoting all of my posts lol. Makes him feel real powerful and knowledgeable. I think Britannica would be a better username for him, since he literally knows it all.

          • Wanna bet? Pick your amount….$1-$infinity I will take it.

I give angry permission to release the numbers and posts I have downvoted.

          • I do think it is hilarious you think I am following you around downvoting you though, honestly until you made this post I don’t think I’d ever even noticed you name on this site.

But how does it feel to let some stranger on the internet live inside your head? No wonder you like Trump, you are just like him.

          • I figured you for that type. Makes sense, you must not recall much of your conversations. Sorta like ol sleepy Joe (see I can fling insults too). You might remember our little debate about the MLB draft, and you were assuming a lot of things then. Then my posts got down voted over and over. Doozeldorf’s comment made me think of you. You should feel special.

            “figured me for that type”

LOL, as if i give a shit what you think about me.

Pretty hilarious you got so butthurt over a conversation on the internet (yes, I don’t remember most of them because they are meaningless mindless entertainment not serious discussions) that you thought I was stalking you….

“(yes, I don’t remember most of them because they are meaningless mindless entertainment not serious discussions)” – yep this explains a lot.

  20. https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-kevin-abel-returns-to-oregon-state-ready-to-prove-he-is-healthy/article_522f0353-63d2-5849-b862-eec6c7ec46c9.html
“I knew with the draft only being five rounds that it was gonna be hard for teams, just because they have a limited number of picks,” Abel said. “With me being a Tommy John guy, it’s a risk, as they say. They haven’t really seen me throw a whole lot since my freshman year. So it’s hard for a team to come forward.

“I knew it was unlikely, but it wasn’t a huge surprise not to go. I’m not too upset about it.”

The other day my wife was complaining we never play games anymore. So we bust out the Yahtzee, 4 turns in and I already have 2 Yahtzee’s and suddenly she doesn’t want but to play games anymore.

  22. Not sure if any of you remember Mique Juarez from past recruiting cycles. He was a 5* 2016 OLB recruit out of High School. The Mike Riley staff was actually.considered a darkhorse candidate to land him at one point. Of course Riley left and nothing happened there. He ended up choosing UCLA over Alabama. Then suffered multiple concussions at UCLA and sat out much of his time there.
It doesn’t appear he and Chip Kelly meshed very well from the get go.
He elected to transfer last year and nearly ended up coming to Oregon State again, but slow played things and got an offer from Utah which he accepted. But then Utah didnt come through, so I guess he never even signed with them. Now, a grad transfer, he’s looking for a last shot to transfer somewhere.

I’m not sure OSU is even an option at this point, but we were last year, so who knows if that interest still remains. Might be worth keeping an eye on, especially if he could fill in at DE(although he really not big enough to play DE in our system
    ).

  23. Zero members of the OSU football team have tested positive for Covid19, according to Nick Daschel.
So either we are an extremely rare example, or we got bad tests. I guess that OSU community random test from a few weeks ago was right. Almost no positive cases in the Benton County area. Maybe the NBA should set up their bubble at Gill Collesium

    • We sure could use the money.

Unfortunately it still might be a disadvantage. We are like an uncontacted tribe who haven’t been exposed to any disease.

      • Might be good for recruiting.
Instead of “Best College Town in the Pac12”, they should start using “Least Infected College Town”.

        • Haha! This is priceless! Hire NiceBeaver to the OSU marketing team. They should at least throw it out there, I am sure it would get a lot of attention.

    • Will this be a luck of da Beavs season where we’ll be off to a great start this season and then covid will start ripping through the team and ruin the season?

Kind of funny Reichner making that tweet and no one on the team even has it. Not to mention the fact that it doesn’t present much danger at all for young athletes.

  24. Can we start a new non-political general thread?
MLB frustration? Movies? Sports? Anything but this?
And then leave this one open for the handful of people who want to argue political stuff?

  25. Slow down the testing, it’s making it look worse than it really is! Wait, that’s not right. I mean it’s making it look really bad…which…I guess it actually is. Ahh, never mind.

          • I didn’t vote you down btw, you have a hater lol…. What’s sad is all the Biden supporters who don’t like the term “Civil War”… Seems like both sides are okay with whatever you want to say as long as it is something they agree with.

          • I couldn’t care less who downvotes me.

I find it far sadder how many Trump supporters defend statues of literal traitors.

But keep trying to claim Biden is the problem.

You remind me of my best friend (Trump supporter), calls me a communist every time we are out but the one time I called him a fascist he lost it and wourldn’t talk me for a week. It was hilarious. And so on brand for a Trump supporter.

          • It’s so funny how some are so blind to hypocrisy, and yes I am talking about you. I never called you a communist, you were the one who called me a fascist, and I explained that historically your inference was incorrect. It’s hard for me to put a label on someone I barely know, for others this is an easy exercise. All I am pointing out, is there are many things to criticize about both of them and neither of them are great choices. And both sides sound the same. You are either a Snowflake or a Racist, nothing in between. I’ll just keep reiterating my point, its not for you, as you are too far gone to one side.

  26. Y’all should check out Jo Jorgensen, if she had a realistic chance of winning I would vote for her… She is the superior candidate which isn’t saying much this election… That being said, she aligns with the way I see things, don’t agree with all of it but the majority of it
