    • Not really. It was 7-3 entering the 4th quarter. Reality is, it’s two awful teams and one of them had to win.

Beavs will beat both of those teams

      • I’m in a hotel with a nice 78” tv (lol) so I wanted to use YouTube. Those links don’t stream on yt. I know people post private links of these games but I don’t know how to find them. There was a guy last year who would post them here.

  1. The zona Washington game goes into overtime into our game. The Beavs end up winning 28-24 after they allow to take over women’s rowing on 1 of the pac12 alternates.

    • He actually knows how to read zone blocking and find a lane. Fenwick runs hard but doesn’t have much to him he needs to be ready for guys to cut his legs and jump or something. We say he goes down easy but he’s getting upended and needs to adjust.

    • Thats a story as old as time. I remember an article about it in the barometer when I was in school. It takes educated fans to teach others to get loud when needed and quiet when not

  2. Deshaun Fenwick’s family and this coaching are the only ones who think he’s good. Every single time Jam Griffin isn’t getting a carry when they run between the tackles, the defense is celebrating. It’s mind blowing the coaching staff can’t see how bad his vision is and he runs like he’s looking for someone to tackle him

  3. Bad fumble by Velling but he’s doing vert well for a freshman. I think he was a 4 star out of high school. He had bad false starts his first game and hasnt happened since and I bet it will be the same with the fumble.

  4. This camera work is really fuckin pissing me off. They show a replay of the wrong guy. Wtf? On the int couldn’t even follow the ball? There’s been like 2 other plays as well most of them big plays or controversial ones.

Obviously the first downs are coming too easy running. May as well abandon it for some poor passes then punt.
Lindgren is fools gold and predictable that he gets a touchdown with run game, next time in the red zone he tries to pass.
Started that drive with runs then went to the passing and sure enough punting.

WSU is probably laughing when Beavs set up to pass instead of inside runs.

  6. Run the damn ball. 5 yds on 1st down then throw incomplete. Then get stuffed on 3rd. Just run every play and see what happens

  7. Shouldn’t there have been a 10 second runoff on that holding call by WSU at the end of the half or is that not a rule any more? I realize that it doesn’t impact anything as WSU didn’t score but it’s a bad miss by the refs.

  8. At the game. Play calling got stale in the 2nd. Defense is looking decent. Need to catch the coug qb, we’ve had plenty of chances.

We should be up by another score or two. Our lack of proper play call in particular downs on offense has left the Cougs in this. Defense is doing their job. This is becoming a repeated problem game after game.

They *think* they should have but they’d clearly be wrong. Beavs out skilled them. Luck is if it bounces off the refs head or something rare. It’s not low probability, high skill plays that are executed.

I shouldn’t say there’s no such thing as luck, but actual luck is extremely rare.

          • Haha. We say that for fun but it’s the byproduct of being bad.

Luck is not a thing at all in the deterministic sense. But it appears to be a thing due to our lack of variables.

I’d say colloquially things like the way a ball bounces on a fumble, ball hitting off a ref, etc could be viewed as luck. But deterministically or objectively there’s no luck.

Do people comment on defenses getting tired just because it’s more noticeable than the offense getting tired? The energy spent should be the same for both, unless there’s something I’m missing.

I’m excited for the Julian, Cooper Jr and Skylar Thomas secondary next year. I think Austin def needs to come back but doubt he will. He seems to be the weak link and could use an extra year but having his experience for next season would be nice. Not sure who would play the other corner spot opposite Thomas if Austin tries to go pro.

    • The consensus in the stands is that Smith should have gone for it on 4th. What a concept! Ironic since “4th Down Smith” was invented vs. the Cougs.

    • I was thinking that second quarter, but I think this defense is great to watch, the secondary in particular. Throw in some nice runs, and Gulbranson developing against what has statistically been a good WSU defense, the end of the 8 game losing streak, I enjoyed watching it. And, they finally started getting sacks.

There was one play where Ward had like 15 seconds, and still couldn’t find an open receiver. Amazing. He finishes with probably less than 55% completion percentage…Caleb Williams was held to 44%…the D is worth watching.

If OSU had beaten USC, they’d likely be a top 15 team, even if wins over Fresno and Stanford were narrow.

5-2, with 3 home games remaining. This secondary will challenge conference foes the rest of the way. I think the biggest challenge is @ UW on a Friday night.

  12. Defense made plays when it needed to. BG wasn’t great but 1 pick and only 1 sack so not too shabby. I’d prefer to give him the start from here on out unless he completely implodes for a 3 or 4 pick game. Lindgren calling a rather tried and true game tonight. Run the ball, opens up play action and quicker rollout. Got the TE involved again.

  13. Beavers defense unbelievably is so good that they’d be at worst 6-1 right now and possibly 7-0 with a QB who just didn’t turn the ball over. It took an unreal meltdown for USC to squeak by the Beavs by 3 and defense got so deflated from QB performance and just packed it up against the Utes. Just need a QB to not lose games and this defense will give them a chance against anybody. Nobody saw this coming but Trent Bray is an animal.

    • If they could have landed a few big, fast lineman…they’d probably be undefeated. Man, that secondary sets the front up for success.

Secondary is very good but the scheme above all is just absurdly good. USC’s offense has looked phenomenal but Bray had Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams all kinds of lost. Had no idea where blitzes were coming from and what coverage Beavs we’re playing. His disguising of the defense is something we have basically never seen from a DC at OSU. A lot of talented QBs are seeing ghosts. Just amazing it took so long for him to get his shot

    • Of course we should all be pleased with the D but this game was not a test. WSU offense is so predictable and they really had no playmakers available. Just a bubble screen fest.

    • 5
      1

We’d be 6-1 if the refs didn’t call the game in favor of USC. We just needed them to make that 4 down call right but gave Williams forward progress instead of calling it dead. Yes, the ref called our play dead and we weren’t given forward progress and that was a RB.

Beavs will get no love from the rankings for this win, nor should they really. They probably get some votes, but will not be in the top 25. Then they beat Colorado, still probably not top 25. If they beat UW then they would be ranked in the high 20s. Then Cal and ASU. There is a real chance the Beavs could be 9-2 heading in to the CW and still only be ranked like #20.

    • Yeah, they haven’t beaten anyone good so that’s a problem. Boise and WSU are 4-2 I guess but last second heroics to beat 1-4 Fresno state and Stanford. They need some dominant wins vs Colorado and cal to get some better respect.

  15. Good game. I was at it. Impressed with DBs. Nice to have get reasonable spots… both offense and defense. Against USC, it 1 yard short on O, 1 yard ahead on D. That takes a toll over the course of a game. Plus good to get obvious holding calls go our way. Can’t imagine what it would be like to be USU or Ducks with getting the benefit of the doubt with officials. Would probably add another win or 2 to the record every year. Anyhow, good to see another win at home… btw BG sucks

BG did not have a good game. This was a disappointing performance against a secondary where our receivers had an advantage.

Smith should start him next week, but he needs to have the best performance of the season. If not Nolan deserves the start in Seattle.

It was an ok game for where he’s at. What’s great is he never looks flustered and the team has more energy with him. Smith should start Ben but on a short leash once Nolan is healthy. Basically reverse rolls from a few weeks ago.

Good win by Beavs. When does Bray get his extension?
BG is growing up and the idea should be Learn how to manage the game without losing It. He is now 2 for 2.

Lindgren play calls are still alarming at times. JS didn’t resort to any absurd gambling, which is growth.

Kickers/field goals are an adventure and may force different approach for future games.

TEs contributed for the 1st time since Fresno St, that was nice to see.

Martinez, Colletto, Grffin in that order please.
    Sacks and Turnovers, check

Go Beavs, JS has a victory over every conference team and all streaks have been broken.

    Bowl eligibility next up

I wouldn’t call this a “complete game” but this was certainly the most satisfying win of the season. All starts with the defense. This secondary is amazing. The times they have breakdowns come as a surprise this season because of how often they’ve been so solid. It was great to see a consistent pass rush tonight. 6 sacks and forced and handful of throw aways.

Much, much better game for Lindgren. He kept it simple. He smashed the run. He gave Colletto multiple attempts in goal to go situations. The RB distribution I think was the biggest sign of growth in the coaching staff. Martinez 16 attempts, Jam 9, Fenwick 7. This is how it should be. Fenwick is so clearly the third back. They made things easy on Ben with play action boots and some easy slants. Protection was not great most of the night but he hung in there and made the right choice every time other than the pretty awful INT. There was only one time we took the ill advised 1st and 10 deep shot that never works. We didn’t really throw it deep all day other than that but why would you? It’s a low % play and I felt the running and short passing game was working well enough. In short, I’m glad that they stuck with what was working and didn’t try to outsmart themselves or the opponent.

So refreshing to clean up the penalties. No false starts, no holding. When you have an inexperienced quarterback those penalties always feel like such backbreakers and staying out of those situations tonight made a big difference. The only coaching decision I questioned was kicking the field goal with 3 minutes left. In a perfect world, that’s the right call to go up 3 scores. But with our kicking situation, that was not a guaranteed make and a first down would have effectively ended the game. It didn’t really matter in the end, I suppose.

Nice to break the WSU curse. Smith has now defeated all P12 teams in his tenure. Unfortunate that conference title hopes are already out the window because the schedule breaks very nice the rest of the way. If they can win in Seattle, I don’t see why the other 3 games with Colorado, Cal, ASU shouldn’t be wins. 10 wins is obviously where we want to be but I think 9 would feel about right for where this team is at. And if I had to predict where they finish I think it will be at that 9-3 mark. It might feel like a season where we left something on the table, but playing in a bowl with a chance for a 10th win would be a successful season all things considered.

Watched the game on the dvr after I got home. Kind of a ho hum, ugly win. But I’d rather win ugly than lose.

Beavs SHOULD be bowl eligible heading into the bye week. The weather forecast for next Saturday is looking awful.

Pretty sure the PAC is out of the CFP after tonight. But that won’t stop the duck hype machine. Sorry, but no one from this conference is top 4 material.

Speaking of always overrated, how about Stanford winning in South Bend??

I passed out for the final 5 minutes. Miss anything important? Cooper scooper made another play?

So I had the beavs at 5-2 after 7 games in the preseason predictions. I had Stanford and WSU as the Lise’s rather than usc and Utah. We’re back on track.

Martinez now has a 5.9 avg and nearly 350 yards on limited carries. Smith needs to get his head out of his ass and start the guy. Best rb on the roster. I like jam, too. Both are better than fenwick.

Hitting the trail and can’t get a thread up can an admin get me? Ohio beav had a good game recap above might be worth posting. Martinez and Ben worth discussing too. Thanks!

Oregon is in the top 15 because of the whole Nike association and “elite talent” narrative. Obliterated by Georgia, then later give up 40+ to WSU. They’re all over the place and don’t have the consistency you think would characterize a top 15 team. Top 25, sure.

For some reason, the loss to Georgia doesn’t have the staying power that the win at Ohio State last year, which carried them to inflated rankings. I’m sure the argument is “well its Georgia.” So that makes 49-3 acceptable for a top 15 team? What about the Ducks elite talent? What about their former-NC defensive-coordinator-head coach?

Its always better to lose big early than late.

  22. It felt like the USC game without the turnovers and thus a victory instead of a frustrating defeat. The Beav’s secondary is impressive. When does one see the type of one on one wins that Rezjohn comes up with in the college game? Oladapo is a beast. Smith had an interesting decision by going for the FG instead of having Colleto run for the first down. As it happened, I was shouting run Jack and ice the game, but a made FG does the same thing. It’s too bad the kickers continue to choke. 35 yarder decent angle should be a gimme until it’s not. I’m a little surprised JS didn’t run the ball there. I’m thinking he might if the scenario comes up again.

  23. From Spokane media:

““We couldn’t get much going offensively. That’s a credit to what they were doing and how physical they were,” Dickert said, “You give up 200 rushing yards, you’re not going to win many games.”

Beavers rushers churned through tackles and wore down WSU’s defense. OSU logged 203 net yards on 47 carries. Freshman quarterback Ben Gulbranson, making his second career start, threw just eight passes in the second half. He finished 12 of 24 for 141 yards with a TD and one interception.

“We didn’t stop the run, so why would they have passed the ball?” WSU edge rusher Ron Stone Jr. said.”

    Hope Lindgren remembers Stone’s question!

  24. Briefly:

Pass protection this game didn’t look great; too much pressure allowed on our quarter back.

Defense did fine, would’ve liked to see pressure from front in 4th quarter throughout entire game. Better tackling next game.
