Let’s make this both the game week thread and game thread since I’m late in getting it up.
You have to think Cal wins this game pretty easily, right? I’d be curious to hear the case for the Beavs.
34-17 Cal is my feeling here. Make your best case for the Beavs winning this one.
Beavs muscled into a home and home with…App State. Corvallis game is in 2032.
Traveling to App State next year. Feels like a loss and I know nothing about what either team will look like next year. Just seems like the type of game App State always wins in the Non-Con
In all honesty, I don’t know what it will be like post-Hurricane, but Boone is a pretty cool place.
The Blue Ridge Mountains, all the historic buildings, the music scene in the area… it’s pretty fun.
Haven’t been there in a while.
No way we’re winning this one. We lose by 2 touchdowns at least. I base this on our apparently diminishing run defense, and our track record of shitting the bed on the road.
Hard to predict a win here. Cal should have beat undefeated Miami but blew a massive lead.
On the other hand, they lost to a terrible 1-6 Florida State team, so I’d say we at least have a punchers chance if some bounces/turnovers go our way.
PFF position group comparisons vs Cal:

OL has been a problem for Cal this year and made their offense inconsistent. Defense has been solid with no obvious weaknesses.
On the road against a superior defense, this feels like a two-score Cal lead, but injuries will continue to play a factor for us. If we can get a few starters back, we’ll have a chance.
Cal by 7
Cal Qb will be a problem even if the Cal oline is spotty. Cal offense is inconsistent but can break a lot of chunk plays.
Cal defense is steady and causes turnovers but may also be somewhat inconsistent.
Beavs are just generally inconsistent and can’t really stop the run defensively or make many chunk plays on offense.
Wildcard is recent familiarity etc for Beavs and perhaps a chip on the shoulder for the old PAC.
Last year was a shootout and the freshmen qb was an unknown. This year will be a lower scoring game with Beavs never quitting.
Beavs 31 Cal 28
Honestly the grit they showed last week told me a lot about them. Yes, they lost, no moral victories here. Pregame I honestly thought there was a chance they would get blown out but they just kept grinding.
The depth of talent isn’t there, a natural occurrence given the circumstances from last year and the injuries. But I don’t see any reason why they can’t win this week. And Cal certainly won’t have a homefield advantage.
Cal gets this win. Don’t care if their o-line hasn’t been great, our d-line and qb pressure has been non-existent even when healthy. Their qb gave us some trouble last year if I recall. Ott is a good rb and could easily put up season high #’s on us. We have historically sucked on the road. Cal’s last 3 losses are by a combined 4 pts and that’s including losses to 2 ranked teams.
If we do have a chance to win, it’ll be getting back to run game with both backs and McCoy in the mix. Can’t turn ball over. I think we can keep this close but Cal wins this game.
You’re probably right, Vegas has Beavs 10 pt dogs/angry says 17 pt dogs. Could easily be somewhere in between.
But, you’re also right about the chance of a win for the good guys. Run game with Allah/McCoy/Hank is, I think, quite likely. My concern is SpTm and TO’s.
Beavs by 4……but I’d not bet lunch on it!
On the bright side, we have done well at Cal (knock on wood), that’s the one place we’ve actually been able to win at on the road. I believe Cal is much better than their record and we will have to play a flawless game to win. Think we need to score TDs vs settling for field goals and our wide outs need to catch the damn ball. Walker is such an enigma. He’s good for a couple drops a game but then usually can catch the tough balls in game time. It’s just weird how we don’t seem to find WR that can catch the ball. Under Snake Smith we typically had 1 guy that could reliably catch a pass but then everyone else was a crap shoot. McCoy has largely been very good and while a couple of his INTs are on him, at least 1 was a bobbled catch by Caufield (in the end zone nonetheless) and I guess the other was the hail Mary. However, 3 or 4 of his incompletions are due to dropped balls. We’re just not a good enough team, against mid to top opponents, that can afford losing the turnover game. Or dropping passes that hit you in the hands.
Next year’s schedule was posted on Facebook. 7 home games.
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/oBHJncWPkbz48X5a/
Sam Houston, Lafayette (really? from PA?), App St, Tulsa…
2 BYE weeks.
Road games are very G5.
And we play WSU twice, home and away.
Which I guess is sortof like having a conference championship game???
Three away games in North Carolina, Texas, and Oklahoma. Seems like it can boost recruiting if the Beavs put up good performances.
Oregon in Eugene in G5?
What if the series splits? Total points decided conference champion?
8/30 Cal
9/6 Fresno State
9/13 @TX Tech
9/20 @Nike
9/27 Houston
10/4 @App St
10/18 Lafayette
10/25 Wake Forest
11/1 WSU
11/8 Sam Houston
11/15 @Tulsa
11/29 @WSU
Uhhh…we’re playing WSU twice? That’s an interesting home and home. PAC12 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES!
First month is respectable….
Really dislike the 2 games v WSU, they couldn’t have found an FCS school? Dumb.
Only one FCS game can be counted towards bowl eligibility.
I know. They have 0 FCS teams scheduled
Correcting myself, I thought Lafayette were the Rajin Cajuns
They did. Lafayette is an FCS school. patriot league
Cal toss up
Fresno win
@ t tech toss up
@ore loss
Hou win
App loss
Laf win
Wf loss
WSU toss up
Sam h toss up
@ Tulsa win
@ wash st loss
Playing Wazzu twice is some vintage WWII circling the wagons scheduling.
I love the spectacle.
Only happened once according to WSU, 1945. BTW their schedule is a lot better then ours next year.
Flyover should be P51 Mustangs, or F4U Corsairs, or a rare P38 Lightening….I’d go see that!
Begin the season vs Cal at Reser; how much different will the two teams look compared to this week?
Notice the second bye is before the trip to WSU for the final game of the (regular) season.
First bye is after the trip to Boone.
Link to the schools presentation of the sched:
https://osubeavers.com/sports/football/schedule/2025
Average Sagarin ranking of opponents is 88, which roughly translates to slightly better than G5, but worse than P4.
At least there aren’t any obvious traps with the G5 opponents.
The best traps aren’t obvious…..
I thought there was talk about playing Stanford. Either rumor or it fell through.
All the reasons to lose have been covered so I’ll pick us to win.
I like your style.
For comparison, Wazzu’s schedule:
https://fbschedules.com/2025-washington-state-football-schedule/
Current average Sagarin rating of their schedule is a little higher than ours, but still in the same ballpark (82 vs our 88). I’m guessing they’ll add a FCS opponent, which should bring it down close to ours.
Dang they still only have 10 games
They already have an FCS opponent in Idaho. And I’m guessing UConn and UMass’s dance cards are full.
Shoot we should add them to the new PAC, it would be great for hoops at least.
That new schedule kind of feels like “The Shutout” sequence in the movie Sting…Did all schools close their ‘doors” as Barnes was approaching?
I get it that the short term timing made it very difficult to fill those game weeks, but man that looks like a weak schedule and will make it tough to recruit to those types of games going forward. The only way you recruit to that is to appeal to the winnable nature of the games overall. It looks like a slam dunk 8-4 before looking any deeper.
In some ways it is more interesting than playing a handful of jilted MWC schools, but App St is a tough one to think there is any benefit to even play, let alone going there for a road game…I might prefer a body bag game but it is kind of a toss-up to go that route too.
I feel like all of the recruiting pitches going forward will focus more on what the league will look like starting in 2026. Everyone knows 2025 is a “limbo” year when we’re between realities.
Yeah… next year was going to be The Shutout, in terms of postseason considerations, regardless.
It’s reality now with the B1G and SEC canceling with non-B1G/SEC schools. So it’s somewhat apt, if too specific.
Isn’t this what was expected for the 2 years in a 2-team conference? None of this should be a surprise to anyone.
I just don’t like playing WSU twice.
Why? It’s unique and kind of cool. Definitely creates some media buzz.
It don’t find it “cool”
I find it embarrassing. The last schools I remember doing this were Idaho and New Mexico State after the Sunbelt booted them.
The “media buzz” is just gonna be, “look at these 2 poor schools that now have to play each other twice because they’ve been left behind”
The articles I’ve read have been pretty understanding and note that it’s not the rare for things like this to happen. I don’t really care either way, it’s the best they can do on short notice without playing more then one big sky team and having to pay half a million to do it.
I have a hard time believing they couldn’t have found 1 more game.
I think this has more to do with WSU struggling to get games given they still need 2. Stanford only has 11 games scheduled for 2025 and can play 13, why not play them?
I heard Stanford declined.
What a stick in the mud.
If you can’t have fun with anomalies that can potentially increase your intake of Fireball*, why bother with college sports?
*beer is an acceptable alternative
I don’t “bother with college sports”
I watch OSU games and only OSU games. I find it stupid, embarrassing, and incredibly pointless to watch the same game twice in November.
And I drink Vodka.
These sound like personal issues.
Correct, I am sharing my personal opinion about the schedule. Thought that was pretty clear. Glad you figured it out. What were the clues you needed?
Oh.
I was mainly talking about the vodka, but the others apply.
What’s wrong with Vodka?
Sorry but when someone brings up Fireball as a legitimate option for anyone over 25 I struggle to take anything they say seriously again.
And I stand by my position that paying WSU twice isn’t interesting, it’s something teams the Sunbelt doesn’t want do.
And the media would be right.
I’ll re-evaluate the schedule after posting my first impression. They have 7 P4 schools on the schedule- Cal, TT, UO, Houston (now Big12), Wake Forest, WSU x2
Add FCS- Lafayette,
Add 3 SEC practice week “cupcakes”- App St, Sam Houston, Tulsa late in the schedule once injuries add up and need some guys to heal
Add in MWC and future conference foe- Fresno St
In a way, this is mirrors the 4-5 soft ball games every SEC team gets each year. And still has some tough games. I think UO is the only sure loss. And the floor should be 9 wins.
Go Alton! Good luck and good health!
Alton Julian hopes to turn his 3-year Oregon State rehab tour into a fabulous finish
Updated: Oct. 24, 2024, 10:53 a.m.|Published: Oct. 24, 2024, 10:14 a.m.
“Keith Heyward has been back at Oregon State for less than a year. But he didn’t need longevity with the Beavers to know what the moment meant to Alton Julian.
Julian’s story at Oregon State is a study in perseverance. The senior safety has mostly been sidelined from game action since tearing an ACL during the 2021 season against Utah. Julian briefly returned last season, only to tear meniscus in his knee.
Julian made his 2024 debut last Saturday against UNLV. It was action that he and Heyward, OSU’s defensive coordinator, talked about months ago.
“He and I shed some tears talking about his playing time. When could he come back, and I could tell what it meant. I’m just extremely happy for him, and I think so are his brothers and teammates to see him get out there on the field,” Heyward said
It was meant to be for Julian, even if many times during the past three years, it didn’t seem so.
“It was in my head, but I never really said it out loud,” Julian said. “I always told myself, somebody’s been through worse. So I stuck with it, and just kept working and made it back.”
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Julian was on the field for about a third of Oregon State’s defensive plays last Saturday. Julian made one tackle, but he showed some of the skills that made him one of OSU’s best defenders prior to the 2021 injury. Julian is impactful enough to play strong side linebacker, or safety.
Provided he remains healthy, Julian should provide a boost to a defense needing productive players.
“He’s very smart,” Heyward said. “With all the experience that he has, you can talk to him, he can learn it in the classroom. There may be some things you have to run throughout out there in practice to get him some reps, but he gets the total concept of what you’re trying to do.”
Julian said he’s had four surgeries since the 2021 knee injury, the latest one coming a year ago. Julian has always had hope that he’d return, but he felt particularly positive heading into the 2024 campaign.
The timing couldn’t have been better, either, as Julian was down to his final year of eligibility. Counting two years at College of San Mateo, this is Julian’s seventh year in college.
Five games, plus a potential bowl game, remain in Julian’s college career.
“I bring experience and energy. I always tell the guys when we break, have fun. I feel like I bring the energy, that fun mentality out there,” Julian said. “Whatever they need me to bring, I’ll bring it.”
Julian has only one stat in mind for his final games in college.
“I just want to win,” he said. “This is all I want to do.”
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2024/10/alton-julian-hopes-to-turn-his-3-year-oregon-state-rehab-tour-into-a-fabulous-finish.html
Wow…I had season tickets the year he was all over the field and really making plays before he got hurt. I’m going to be serious for a moment and not go all hillbilly and get Jack all worked up and say, “hell yeah, Alton Julian!”
Trying to gaslight people into thinking you were doing a dialect borne of Scotch-Irish roots instead of a racist stereotype is a tactic, I suppose.
You should insult the Acadians next.
Make it a trifecta.
Oh I come from a world where you better be able to handle an insult or two. But I’m a man (I’m 40!). I can handle it…
This is all you handling your racist troll.
You introduced this.
I’m not personally insulted. I’m just stating fact.
You’ve insulted a lot of other people, but if you went and wrote that garbage on a sports blog, just to troll, and you’re as old as you say, you don’t care.
I get it.
Nik Fisher commits to Beavs. Think he was a Tx State commit initially? Anyway, another edge guy. I like that we’re going heavy on the edge area but hopefully we can grab some guys via portal that can play now. Seems like all our edge guys our tall and lanky and we just pray that they can gain 40-50 lbs of muscle in 3-4 years.
And stay with us, eh?
He’s now our top rated commit. Close to a 4-star. In the old days, going from TSU to OSU would’ve gotten him a ratings bump. Probably not now.
We don’t get a bump to 4*. Don’t be silly.
When he’s offered by some B1G or SEC schools, because their first six targets fell through, he’ll get a bump.
He’ll get a bump and he’ll jump…
We always used to get a bump for G5 commits jumping to us
Funny how that works. When they commit to OSU, they are 3 stars. Same player commits to a blue blood program and suddenly he becomes a 4-5 star
Saw a post on X the other day for a TE that got offered by Alabama and either 24/7 or Rivals immediately bumped him up like 400 spots or something. Lol.
Gotta support the narrative
UNLV game TV ratings didn’t surpass CSU game (likely due to the overtime bump for CSU), but pretty solid at 500k. Better than a whole lot of power conference games, too (e.g. USC-Maryland, Baylor-TT, etc). CW continues to give good exposure.
I’ve been a Beavers fan and follower since the 1967 giant killers” season, I stayed faithfully with them through all the 29 losing seasons between 1971 and 1999. That said, any off those teams would’ve creamed Nevada or UNLV. This team managed to lose to both of them, back to back yet. I’m embarrassed. I I see no path back for them, now or in the future. I’m done. I blame Phil Knight.
Buh-Bye.
What I find interesting is my parents said the same thing in the eighties and early nineties. Funny how history repeats itself. I do understand however the landscape is much different now.
Possibly the dumbest shit ever posted on this site. You won’t be missed.
Dude, you clearly didn’t follow OSU if you think that either the Ferting(76-79) or Avezzano(80-84) teams would have beaten either Nevada or UNLV. Let alone both. Maybe the single dumbest thing anyone has ever posted on this site LOL
Sock puppet account
Blame yourself
You’re a liar.
Dubious statement to say any of Fertig or Avezanno teams would beat UNLV.
Kragthorpe in one year maybe. Rocky long defenses were pretty good, and the wishbone was fun early in the season, before our QB got whacked in Pac 10 play.
And that’s compared to UNLV back then, when it was a dumpster fire all but two years. They had one or two good seasons that overlap, and we wouldn’t have beaten those teams, pre-1997 or so.
Beavs win 30-27. Hayes hits game winner as time expires after gets a stop on 4th and inches from midfield with less than 2 minutes to play. Clemons with a breakout game and offense controls the game. D gets a couple turnovers and plays ok… or Beavs lose 38-7.
Hmm… maybe… UNLV is a very good team?
Beaver baseball doubleheader against LBCC today. Beavs won first game 16-0 with a no hitter and 4 beavers home runs. I left in 7 inning of 2nd game and LBCC still didn’t have a hit. Kleinschmidt, lefty pitcher that transferred from LB to OSU struck out 7 in a row. Dax Whitney started the first game for the beavers and had big time stuff for a freshman. Lots of beavers hitters fighting for playing time
So, time to book flights to Omaha? Or too soon?
A bit soon, considering the level of competition. I think we will be able to score runs in bunches, but we’ve seen beaver teams in the past that could wear out mid week starters. Pitching in deep but have to see if we have any Friday or Saturday dudes. I’m optimistic that the answers to both questions will be yes, but I would leave the plane ticket in your cart for now.
https://www.tri-cityherald.com/sports/article294478419.html
Their goal of $300 mill isn’t enough for UW to compete? Lol.
House of cards
How many Danny O’Neils are there?
“On the other hand, I’m beginning to feel like the mark who’s sitting in front of a carnival game at the midway aiming a water pistol into the mouth of a clown, inflating a balloon as a gravelly voiced barker urges me to keep pouring my money into this game if I’m serious about winning a big prize. You see, I’m old enough to remember 16 months ago when I was told that Washington absolutely had to move to the Big Ten otherwise it would be relegated to a lower rung of college football’s food chain. My opinion that Washington should stick with the conference it had been in for more than 100 years was deemed stupid, and it would have meant Washington would become a farm team for those schools whose conferences were hooked into more lucrative television deals.

Hopefully the Beavs come out ready. These 10 am east coast time games can be rough for the traveling west coast team.
Beavs should be ok even traveling to an ACC school. Sometimes an early east coast game-time feels very much like 1 pm in your own timezone.
lol… I’m an idiot anyway, flipped the time zone difference.
Vegas moves Beavs to +12.5 despite BIG JIM saying that two of Cals top D players are out, an experienced offensive tackle out for a freshman, and that Ott may not play as well.
Saw on ESPN gameday this morning that OTT will play
Of course, Ott is available, it’s always Luck O’ The Beavs. And of course, Cal is rolling with the passing game with the secondary apparently not concerned about covering anyone.
Don’t we have any others safeties other than Kane, who is highly over matched!
Cal scores on opening drive. Kinda a fluke play for the TD but they matched right down the field. Defense looks garbage here early.
And Cal scores on a bizarre Rugby style play after the Beavs had the 3rd and 8 stopped.
Opening series with 3 pass plays?!
Well, I said we needed to play a clean game to have a chance and they take the kickoff out the endzone and then a hold on the return and we start with the ball on the 5. Lol. Then it’s nearly a safety and we’re hopefully punting from the 1 inch line. Play is under review and it might be called a safety. We’ll see
Why review that 100 times and not the pitch and score?
Well, the start has been about as “unclean” as one can get!
Big Jim Wilson all but calls Card an idiot for running that KO out of the end zone. Who’s the special teams coach for OSU?
Special teams have been a disaster all year honestly. ST coach needs to move along.
Beavs have the look of mailing it in.
Gundy needs to figure out something besides Walker.
KHJ needs to find some intensity and take some risks on defense at least.
It was a ridiculous decision, as was the decision to not call a FC on the one he then fumbled.
Maybe Ayers should field KOs.
At least we could blame stupid returns on him being a true frosh.
I’ve only coached youth football, but in bracket coverage, I don’t think a five-yard cushion is what the coaches would be looking for. 14-0 Cal
So Cal has 2 key dlineman and a star lb out but we need to pass?
And for the accolades the O-line receives, they’ve been shit in pass protection lately.
Did Gundy lose the flysweep/motion in the offensive playbook? This offense is garbage and McCoy can’t throw a clean ball today. Let Johnson finish this game and get some experience. It is starting to set in that we are now worse than Cal, who was the most inconsistent program in the PAC for the last 10 years, and now 0-4 in ACC, but we can’t even compete with them.
Not impressed.
Melvin Jordan just rolled his ankle pretty good…
Luck o da beavs.
Watching this defensive front try and get after the quarterback is comical
The Beavs we’re seeing in this first quarter might not win another game all year. They look uninspired. We can’t do shit on offense and our defense is just bad all around. 4 months until baseball season.
This is hard to watch.
Great show boys!!!
Can’t tell if we get worse every week or our opponents are just better.
Beavs have zero play makers on offense. No receivers and average QB at best, not to mention a weak offensive line. The team looks over matched.
I think it’s more than a “look”.
It’s like when Cory Hall was coach.
I’m about to turn off the game.
Stick around for Dr./Capt. Ben
#8 on defense is so bad. Gets caught for a holding penalty and was still 3 yds behind the receiver. This team is a hot mess.
Beavs laying an egg and Mizzou is falling apart against Bama. Just need the Blues to get hammered by the Canadiens tonite.
Dr Ben to the rescue. Gundy wanted to wait until the game looked out of reach to bring in the ringer. We will see the rise of Dr Ben to right the ship.
Wait, why wouldn’t they take the penalty to push them out of FG range? Does Bray have that little confidence in the defense?
I don’t have confidence. They’ve only had 1 stop
It would have been something like 3rd and 13, right?
I don’t know if they are being outcoached or if it is youth.
How about ineptitude
What a garbage heap. A toilet. Junk.
With 2:50 to go, it is 28-0 and OSU has 27 yards of total offense. That is pretty sad….
Make it stop!!!
Ugh. This is horrible. The stats are embarrassing. The only thing that makes it worse is there is a limited travel roster so you have to keep throwing the same players out there. You could at least get some low depth chart guys a chance for some reps is this was a home game.
A loss like this is definitely more about Jimmy and Joes, than Xs and Os.
Stop with his QB swapping. It seems like Dr. Ben was giving the offense some spark.
This pathetic display reminds me of the Andersen era.
Spot on.
2024 will likely be the year of the complete destruction of the Oregon State football fanbase. The thing keeping the fanbase together is their hatred of the Ducks. Gabriel winning the Heisman and Oregon winning the CFP will be the final nail in the coffin, with the burial happening in 2025 at Autzen in front of 60K and FOX.
What happens next is anyone’s guess. Mine is that OSU will fold the program within the next 10 years. Good riddance.
lol… Gabriel winning the Heisman would be the next coming of Geno Toretta… a complete bullshit call.
Nobody hates the Ducks, Duck. We’re not even thinking about them, other than when you bring them up.
When we fill our schedule with you all next year, as you owe us, you can them all fuck off. You are dead to us.
It is no longer a civil thing. It is you all being irrelevant to the majority of college football fans in Oregon.
A comedy of errors? A comedy of crap!
Worse half of football in all phases of the game since probably 2017? At least the pudgy gnomes teams had some offensive innovation. This is Anderpant’s stuff. Combination of lack of talent and execution.
Worst half of the season. Beavs were more competitive against the Ducks than this. Bray has his work cut out for him. Lots of questions after that half of garbage.
You wonder if he sticks around out of fear he can’t recruit absent NIL resources and takes a D coordinator position somewhere.
You have played yourself into complete irrelevance. Take a bow.
It’s worse than that. The program will be financially insolvent with the mass exodus of fans to the transfer portal in the coming offseason.
At this point OSU needs to look out for the best interest of their institution and liquidate the program’s assets. A good idea would be to convert the stadium’s color scheme to green and yellow so that the Ducks can host neutral site games in Corvallis.
lol… this is possibly the stupidest shit I’ve read in a long time.
We are at the “kids are going to class and doing all the right things” stage of bad football.
Gundy needs to go watch those old Boise St games where they did all kinds of motion, reverses, wr pass, trickeration just to keep defenses off balance. Gundy thinks the team can’t run block so just pass, but they aren’t pass blocking either and can’t really pass either.
Defense is playing a lot of young guys and they just look a step behind and unsure of what they are seeing in front of them.
Special teams can walk home.
Complete disaster of a first half.
Glad i haven’t watched.
Maybe next year they go full Avezanno…
Gulbranson throws ducks. Garbage.
Gabarri then throws it 10 yards short of Walker. Garbage.
Just leave Ben in
Bad play call n 4th
Is Bray banging a cheerleader?
I’m just hoping we can score in the 4th quarter when Cal puts in their 3s.
Yasssss!
Beat their one future pro corner for that TD.
Why does OSU schedule these football schools?
Should stick with playing ahhh can’t think of any at the moment.
The rest of the football teams on our schedule this year thank you for doubting them with your poor troll.
Mendoza is by far the best QB we’ve seen this year. You’re correct about that.
Worst defeat since I don’t know when. There have been struggles, games you knew the Beavs were up against it going in, but this? My goodness, Pettibonesque. The only “good” thing about that era was the Beavs ran it so much they minimized possessions.
This offense is uninspired. This does remind me of the Anderson years.
No quit in this team. No sir, they’re playing the same brand of football as in the first quarter.
We’re entering new territory of incompetence for the year.
It’s a road game.
The only incompetence is your expectations.
This was a given.
Hey at least we have Men’s Basketball coming up. Oh wait, watching even that is like kissing your cousin with halitosis.
If she’s cute, it’s not remotely close.
But at least we ain’t the Ducks.
That would be embarrassing.
Let Gabarri take it the rest of the way for experience.
Beavers QBs: 4 YPA
HANKERSON: 4.6 YOC
4.2. Sorry, didn’t mean to exaggerate the difference.
Just got home what have I missed?
Nothing you’d want to see!
Gulbranson is really good at foot passes when he’s scrambling.
1/10 on third downs… I bet even the players’ mothers have turned off the game.
Hopefully can score and at least avoid the shutout.
Dr. Ben needs to be starting going forward
He might be even better right now if he started from the beginning. He’s still a little rusty, but likely gives us a better chance going forward.
This Cal team is the only win of soon to be 1-7 Florida State by the way…
Yeah they also dominated Miami for 3 quarters. So they clearly have some chops.
Thank God this one is over!
“Jeanty has 1,248 yards rushing in six games, and is 1,381 yards from breaking Sanders’ single season record of 2,628 yards. Jeanty has a minimum of seven games remaining, including Friday’s critical Mountain West Conference game at UNLV. ”
Anyone guess he breaks against the Beavers?
Oh he will. Even if he needs 300 yards to do it.
At this point, even AF as a possible “W” is looking shakey…
It is on the road.
Shakey is a poor expectation.
Lucked out today with my son’s final soccer game of the season and team pizza party happening at the same time as the Beavs game. Felt no obligation to watch the game and am happy to have missed it.
I watched the game in about one and a half hours.
The run D looks better, but it’s putting the DBs on an island, and Mendoza was just on today. I would much rather have the DBs on an island. If they don’t get those reps, they don’t learn. And that obviously needs to happen.
There were a lot of good plays, but Mendoza is just smarter than our DBs… for now.
After the first TD, I thought it was just going to be one of those games. But I withheld judgment, thinking we could still do something, once given a chance. One KR that didn’t need to happen, a penalty that occurred on a KR that didn’t need to happen, and three pass attempts starting at our own five… I knew the outcome.
I still watched to the end. BG seems to have a lot more zip on his passes. And his footwork has improved. Not a bad outing by him, given the circumstances.
Bye week now, right?
May be a good time for some peer review from outside and or former coaches.
Hopefully D players get healthy.
I think I’m going to be right with it being a 4 win team. Gulbranson also clearly better than McCoy. This doesn’t help with my instinct that these are bad coaches.
Understand why they went McCoy and stuck with him trying to give him time to adjust to speed of the game, but he’s shown that he can’t do it. He can’t see the field and process the information the way a successful QB needs to at this level and there’s just no fixing it with time. He got away with telegraphing and being ultra slow to make a decision early in the season against bad defenses, but that ship has sailed. For him to thrive he needs to be in a system like he was at Idaho (and against FCS players).
Spend these two weeks getting the offense re-organized with Captain Ben, they clearly gained some confidence with him in there actually reading the defense and working through progressions. Stop with the multiple QB musical chairs mid-drive, terrible time to experiment with that crap when the team is getting boat raced and confidence is at an all time low. Another “learning experience” for the young coaches.
Seems like they should have known that by the end of fall camp? Maybe Bray just too focused on him as his guy?
Two weeks to reset, maybe Griffin, Collins, Thomas and others get healthy and they look more D1-ish.
Young staff taking some L’s
Yup. That’s why I suggest peer review, constructive criticism.
New HC, OC, DC (with previous DC position experience).
I think Bray needs to intervene with Heyward. Even with injuries, the Tisebar look is unacceptable.
The redshirts are now off.
Gutridge can play in all games without burning one.
Not saying he will, because I think BG is capable, but the reserves need reps.
Good point, throw everything at getting to 6 wins and developing. Those bowl game practices are a huge.
Did Julian not play again? Man this team can’t get healthy. Probably won’t see singleton because he’s going to use his redshirt.
Beavers official X site appears to have NOT posted the final? Half time 31-0 is the last post?
Oh, but GP2 was there in support.
Gundy is down his most explosive player, Jam, and several key olinemen. Also we are no 8 weeks into the season and his offense has been fully scouted for defensive coaches to stop it. We are at the point where Chip Kelly’s offenses ended at UCLA. Unless they had game changing wideouts they were pretty easy to slow down. We are there now.
I’m no longer convinced bringing the old Beavs back was the best approach long term.
We are entering new type of roster turnover and Jim Wilson pondered it today. How many guys who get injured before game 4 will just sit and wait to transfer for the extra year and an NIL bag? Do we have some of the more talented guys who are being told by agents to just ride out the rest of the year and not attempt to return? Jim was talking about Jayden Ott but it makes me wonder about our roster when so many on the original 2 deep are not even playing. Get a few games of film and pack it in with a dubious injury before you play a fifth game, and see what offers are out there for next year…
Colins seems a likely poaching target…lined up with effective linemates, he probably looks better, or allows them to.
“I’m no longer convinced bringing the old Beavs back was the best approach long term.”
I would have liked to have seen a run at UNLV’s OC. Heyward is supposed to be a good recruiter….sucks as DC IMO. When I saw how he had them lining up against the Ducks, I turned it off. Not watching Tisebar shit anymore.
I think the driver was the context the program found itself in, and thinking that loyal alumni was necessary. Maybe it was absent a buncha money to hire experienced coaches, but injuries and coaching inexperience have them looking poorly.
Looks like 80’s Beavers.
“Also we are no 8 weeks into the season and his offense has been fully scouted for defensive coaches to stop it. We are at the point where Chip Kelly’s offenses ended at UCLA. ”
Good point. I was concerned about that when Gundy was hired. When UCLA lost to OSU in Reser last year, other than one hard running RB, the UCLA O seemed a mish mash with no clear identity. That’s how this O has trended along with key injuries….
All his misdirection calls are so fucking obvious.
And why are we trying to run toss options… when they are so fucking obvious?
We are not now, nor have we ever been an East-West team who can outrun people to the boundary.
Stop with the square peg in a round hole garbage.
Put the ball in their face. Then when that is only a nominal gain, stuff the fucking ball in their face again. Stop with this trickeration fancy pants bullshit, and run basic football the way we are capable of running basic football.
When we get that right, then maybe pull some misdirection.
I don’t see the value for purchasing season tickets for football from now on. I’ll instead choose a game or two in September with nice weather, an afternoon kickoff time and against an opponent we have a better chance at winning. My family will save a lot of money and focus our time on other endeavors. I have been a Beaver fan for 40 years but, I believe we are beginning to see the end of competitive Beaver football. Today I spent my afternoon helping others out with my time doing some yard work and then spent quality time with family. I had the game on the radio in the background until it was 17-0, then checked the box score online at the end of the game. I don’t feel bad, and I feel I made the right decisions with my time today. The Beavers used to be competitive vs. Cal when we were still in the same conference. Now the talent between OSU and non Mountain West teams is incomparable. OSU still has PAC-12 talent on the roster, what will it look like in a few years when they’re gone? Things are not looking up for Beaver athletics, especially Beaver football. Go Beavs! Hey, maybe we’ll see 2 for 1 tickets at Bi-Mart again in the near future?
lol… nobody who has “been a fan for 40 years” gives up on this.
That’s complete bullshit, since there are several seasons true Beavs have suffered worse than this.
You blew this troll handle too soon and with a bullshit narrative.
Just stop, man. Every single time someone doesn’t line up exactly with your narrow view on a what a Beaver fan should be (for you, it typically means only consistent unwavering optimism and support allowed. No criticisms or hard truths.), you immediately accuse them of being a troll, “loser”, or Duck fan.
Nothing Beaver State said is unreasonable. Things suck right now, and everyone has a breaking point. In the past, there was always the fact the team was still in a power conference. The future looks quite bleak, and you shouldn’t shame someone for not investing their mental capacity or hard earned money on something like that.
lol… you simply don’t understand the 28 years and how bad things really could be.
Sorry, but our situation now is light years ahead of what is truly bad.
I have issues, and I have stated them. What doesn’t line up with my baseline for being something other than a bandwagon fan is when some self-entitled turds give up on the team they say they’re a fan of, especially when they try and gaslight everyone about being a fan during some of the 28 years and telling us this is embarrassing.
That lie can go back up the hole it came from.
Weak weak sauce.
A lot of negativity and I get it, but green coaches and players. For one Hayward is not nearly as bad as Tibesar. Tibesar’s defenses were legendarily bad. Heywards D has at least looked serviceable in spots. Plus Tibs didn’t have to deal with a litany of injuries. Cal is the definition of snake bit this year. And that was a team that is better than their record taking out 4 weeks of frustration. I am more concerned with Gunderson at OC. The offense has looked great at times this year and puzzlingly bad at times. Gotta find consistency and stick to an identity. Looks like he is trying to hard to get a passing game going, but for whatever reason we are not using play action enough. If you are a heavy running team, you have to be effective with play action and our tight ends should be seeing more looks. I have not been as down on McCoy as most, but the benching was deserved this game. I think Gulbranson will likely start moving forward and I am fine with that. McCoy just has way too much trouble going through his progression. And we know BG can do that with the best of them. Gabarri should get some looks too. He clearly has the highest ceiling, but that ceiling will never be found without game reps. Especially if things keep going south, he should get the call.
I think with McCoy the tape is on him now and he’s a big play threat running but doesn’t challenge the defenses deep much so they are loading up on the run and keying him in it now. I can see why they liked McCoy and he’s made some great plays but BG might be able to stretch defenses deep more and can open things up a little more. He just has a low ceiling and doesn’t help build for next year and the guys that have the higher ceiling. I think one of BG’s best attributes is reading defenses and making the right audibles when necessary (saw it quite a bit in this game). The offensive line might have been the worst part of the offense tonight. Not getting much push in the run game and allowing way too much pressure on the QBs and we saw the results. QBs having to pass more than usual and getting teed off on.
In the “there are no transitive properties” in college football category. SDSU leads Wazzu 26-14 with about 13 minutes left. Wazzu’s slim CFB hopes are in danger.
Not sure I understand all the outrage and surprise. Cal is the best team we’ve played this year besides Oregon. They have a solid D, great QB, elite RB, depth, and continuity. Much better than their record would indicate. We have a new coaching staff, sub average roster without a quality QB, that’s been decimated by injuries. Nick Sabon would be 4-4 with this team. The 44-7 score shouldn’t surprise anyone. Even if this team gets healthy, I don’t see a game on the schedule they’re likely to win. It will take some luck and extraordinary individual performances to even beat AF. Next year won’t be much better. My hope is that Bray will make some adjustments to staff, the Pac12 rebuild ends with a couple great additions and a respectable media deal, and the program reloads with quality under the radar HS recruits that can be developed with some difference makers mixed in via portal. Then aim to really compete again in 2026. I’ll always be a Beav fan. Grew up walking into Parker in the rain watching some crap football with no real hope. Watched the Orange Express in the 80s and 90s… never missed the Far West Classic. Still pretty much watch all games still today. Love watching all the other Beavs sports too. Men’s and women’s. Always enjoy rooting for Beavs. Sucks to lose but learned after 9/11 to not let it ruin my day. Fans have very little impact on a team’s success or failure. Without Phil, the Ducks would probably be in a similar situation as we are in. Probably worse. Had Smith not bailed, we’d probably be ranked right now. None of the fans had any control over a million events that has led to the Beavs current situation. It’s not like we suck as humans (maybe some of you do… I’m looking at you SB). We just happen to root for a football team that for the majority of its existence has been below average with a lot of inherent disadvantages. So be it. Enjoy rooting for your team… or get off the bandwagon if you like (fucking pussy). Adjust your expectations to reality, put things into perspective, treat others with respect, and enjoy life. There is much worse things in life than losing 44-7 and not being a fan of a team that is currently successful. Then know, there will be moments in time that the stars align and the Beavs will shine. Few and far between but all that much sweeter when it happens. Go Beavs. The sun will rise tomorrow
Thanks….
They definitely have good to decent chances to beat Air Force and San Jose. College football is so different week to week. Just look at the wsu San Diego state game.
True. They could win. Never know. I don’t like there chances especially vs SJSU but we’ll see. Good to see WSU gut one out vs. SDSU. Had Smith stayed, that WSU game at Reser would have been monumental.
Ya and UNLV played Boise close and WSU barely beat sdsu. No transitive property but does mean we can compete if we continue to get healthy and better and actually have all 3 phases show up which we haven’t seen.
McCoy needs stay starter Ben played horrible after this year go after a qb in the portal to compete with McCoy Johnson Ben needs to transfer and also go after good wide receivers
how about let’s go for good wrs, good oline, good qb, good dline, good kicker, good kick returner, good safeties, good special teams coach, good defensive coordinator, good offensive coordinator, good TEs.
Key spots on the field that are obviously needing an upgrade: Kane at safety, Card at kr, Walker at wr/pr, Hayes at k
All of these guys are pretty underwhelming in their roles
Walker has been our best receiver…
Precisely the problem. He also has at least five drops that would have been 30+ yard gains/tds. It is obvious that Walker is not a #1 receiver but no one else is the least bit productive. Walker would be fine as a #3 option perhaps but he is underwhelming in his current role. Hence my statement.
This is the best argument.
Walker is a potentially great WR3 who can just kill the opponent, when their best DBs are covering WR1 and 2.
The only reason I can figure out why he’s a PR is because he will never return the ball, so he’s a sure thing to just catch it… and probably has the wherewithal to not do so in the coffin corner.
This passing offense would be significantly better if Valsin was available.
I roll my eyes at Angry’s “glorified HS team” comment but there have got to be a lot of HS kickers better than Hayes.
Was that FG blocked?
I know someone got credit for it, but it looked wobbly coming off the foot, and replay didn’t confirm any change of direction, that I could see. Even the announcers were hmming and hawing during the replays.
There are HS players better than McCoy, too. I mean most 3-star QBs in HS would be better. You can go up and down our lineup and this is pretty much true. People might not like my comment, but it’s accurate. RB is pretty much the only position where it’s not true.
Your statements are not accurate. And it’s honestly pathetic you keep pretending they are.
Nope. There are hundreds if not thousands players on HS teams much better than players on the Beav’s roster. Pretty much any 3 star in HS is better than everyone at every position on our roster except RB. We have legit RBs, and that’s it. A high school all star team would beat the Beavs. An top 25 high school team would beat the Beavs. So yeah, not every HS team, but good HS teams are better than the Beavs. Hence “glorified HS team” and not “a HS team”.
This was correct when I wrote it week 2, and it’s even more obvious now. Insulting me isn’t going to change reality. It’s just going to make you feel good for a few seconds before you go back to whatever semblance of a life you have that make you hurl insults at a correct blogger because you don’t like what they wrote.
Sorry angry but that claim is just comical and demonstrates you don’t know shit about football at any level.
It is truly sad you are so devoted to a complete and total nonsense argument.
You probably think the National Champs can beat NFL teams to don’t you?
Blah blah blah. Then give it a few weeks, and I’m right again.
Hahaha…OSU could lose every game by 50 and you’d still be wrong.
Sorry, you’re making a really dumb argument. There are zero high school teams that can beat any FBS team. This has nothing to do with Oregon State, FBS football teams are on a different level. You are essentially claiming Oregon could beat the Carolina Panthers. That is your argument. And it is comedically stupid.
I’ve seen this act like a thousand times over 15 years. A butt hurt hemorrhoid rage at the messenger. It’s really not my fault we suck. Go blame the people who are to blame.
Hilarious that you think I am “enraged”
You and your opinion aren’t that important just because you own a blog.
I’m sorry you’re so dumb you believe a high school team is better than the Beavs, that belief makes your stupidity self evident.
Yeah, I’m stupid. Great one. Beavs are still a glorified HS team.
“glorified high school team”
And the Ducks could beat the Carolina Panthers.
Same logic.
He admits he never watches the games, you sure as shit know he’s NEVER watched a HS game, and he’s never played football…his schtick is just that, a shtick.
At this point he’s merely acting as an engagement farmer.
If it’s true now. it’s true of most teams in the NCAA now, and it’s always been true.
I won’t argue either way, because it’s always been a suspension of disbelief to think any college ream is performing at a level that would compete at the top of the game. None of them would come close, and it hasn’t been that way for 50 some years. It is a second-rate game, preying on irrational loyalties of fans to schools in order to foment some idiotic talent gap bullshit.
There’s no talent gap. There are teams who all have good and bad years.
That’s it.
Anything more than that, and the person making the argument is just lying to themselves.
lol… people should look up winsipedia between us and UNLV.
We played them three times from 83 to 91. We got stomped in every game.
lol… we need more, “I’m so embarrassed, because I can’t even do basic research on the fans and team I’m trolling,” trolls.
They are what makes the world go round.
Football to date assessment:
4-4 at the bye
Negatives so far-
coaching inexperience,
mass injuries to the roster,
not a lot of experience on the field for the last 4 games
losing winnable games
special teams
defensive strategy is puzzling, not really getting pressure on qbs
national exposure is limited and we are being pigreon-holed on some respects
conference media deal and final members are both still in doubt
Men’s basketball is just around the corner and it will be uglier than football
Ducks are ranked #1
Positives-
Reser is a top notch football stadium for the program going forward
Bray has a team that is young and doesn’t quit, and he is learning a lot of lessons as a head coach
4 wins are better than 3
Jim Wilson and Mike Parker are great to listen to each game
CW network is helping with national exposure and good ratings
WSU is holding up the PAC12 banner at 7-1 and finally ranked
Boise St is representing the future of the PAC12 well with a potential Heisman winner and a playoff appearance being very possible
Next years schedule looks decent and is at least completed before major recruiting begins
QB recruit looks to be a good one out of DJU’s family tree
Ben should start next game. Plug in McCoy/Johnson on short yardage/wildcat type situations. Go back to McCoy if need be, but I think that Ben at least deserves a start with how he seemed to light somewhat of an offensive spark, and he appears to have more down field threat.
It’s almost as if someone here has been saying that since the first time he saw McCoy throw a football. Huh.
Offense spark. Really? I must have watched a different game. Didn’t see that. Saw a meaningless drive vs 3rd string D playing base sets. I think we’ve seen enough of Ben to know he’s not very good and isn’t going to be the difference between winning and losing for this team.
He’s pretty good. Definitely better than McCoy.
Crazy enough, this was our #2 rated defensive game on PFF, behind only SDSU. Worst offensive game of the season. Ben also had the second best QB rating of the season behind McCoy’s Idaho State game.
The reality is none of our WR’s are going to stretch the field. We have to rely on consistent ground yardage. If the OL can’t deliver that for us, we don’t have a chance.
That is interesting considering we have up 44 pts. Lol. The Cal rushing wasn’t that high but Mendoza threw for 365 yds and only 8 or 9 incompletions. I think they could’ve ran the ball much better but didn’t need to with the pass game being so good.
Mendoza could just do no wrong… except he took a lot of unnecessary hits when he ran the ball.
Their first TD is a TFL 999 times out of a thousand, because football isn’t rugby, and a QB isn’t going to trail a train wreck… most of the time. It was at that point I knew it would be one of those days. Even when they screw the pooch, they score TDs.
Yeah, it’s basically a measure of “did they do what they were supposed to do?” Tackling was the best it has been all season. Coverage was average, but that’s an improvement over where it has been.
Ben is the future, he’s going to kill it next season
Above people said the goal is to win games and get a bowl. If that’s the goal, then Ben is the best option. McCoy isn’t the future, either, so that argument is flawed from the get go.
I still think Gutridge is\will be the best QB on the team. But he needs a good 20 pounds on him.
Next year will be a limbo year. There are no expectations, other than development and effort. If we’re not playing to make a RB, it’s a throwaway season.
Bray blew it with KH, season is a lost cause. Plan for the future
