Baseball returns to Corvallis this Friday, should we expect improvement? Is it needed?

Only 180 days till Cal comes to Reser; what do you expect from multi tasking Bray and his revised staff?

Basketball always good for opinions, let’s hear ’em. Tinkle and Rueck, not exactly two peas in a pod.
GO BEAVS!

Fun fact: Didja know USC baseball is playing home games this season at a public park in Irvine (Not anteater field) and that all home games are free admission?

Hope they can get this pitching figured out. Yet again, we kept hearing how this was the deepest staff Dorman has ever had and they’ve been not very good these last 2 weeks. 57 walks, 7 wild pitches, 9 hit batters and 11 home runs. Obviously very early in the season but these categories have only been getting steadily worse the longer RD has been coaching pitchers. The staff he inherited the first couple years were by far more in control of bb, wp, hit batters. It’ll be good to play at home after being on the road for so long but sadly, travel is the name of the game this season.

  2. Football tomorrow. Seems crazy but looking forward to hopefully a healthy defense (Collins, Johnson, Poem’e, Hickle, Howard), Patterson and Ayers to look like clear #1s, a bigger, faster Allah, a diversity of tight ends, three WRs to step up, and Gutridge to have shown clear growth at QB…Murphy will get the start, but he’s likely gone after a year to a higher bidder, so I’m pulling for the local, long term(?) kid. I’m wondering if Gabbari Johnson’s height is an issue in the pocket and he ends up running designed packages?

The O actually has a number of 4*s, at least coming out of high school, at QB, TE, and a WR or two. Probably more than any point in history(?), so we’ll see how the stars align.

I’m not sure OLine talent and depth plus Cavanaugh are an upgrade over last year, could hamper the offense?

    Who punts and kicks?

    • I forget, are transfers unlimited now?
Like can a guy like Murphy change schools 3 years in a row if he hasnt graduated yet?
I guess it doesnt matter because as soon as you get used to an elugibilty rule, another ruling comes in and undoes it.

          • I guess my comment was that they didn’t used to have the unlimited ability to transfer after they signed an LOI but that’s probably no longer the case.

I don’t think it really matters anymore hows y times you transfer whether you’ve graduated or not. The NCAA passed a rule about a year ago that allowed for one transfer if you hadn’t graduated. If you wanted to transfer more than once as an undergrad, you had to sit out a year but the courts shot down that rule too. So I think you can transfer without restrictions or penalties even if you’re an undergrad.

          • Currently there are no restrictions on transferring. You can transfer as many times as you want whenever you want so long as you retain “good academic standing” enough to enroll at the school you are transferring to.

So yes, Murphy and anyone else could transfer during the Spring portal window without ever playing for OSU.

  3. RE staff, I expect the D to be more aggressive under Bray. OC Gunderson probably gets more free reign with a big QB with an arm and new, big TEs, but how he schemes with what may be a limited offensive line probably determines their competitiveness and continuity, which was severely lacking last year.

  4. The TE Riley Willaims is listed at 275 per Blitz. Guess he was listed at 245 for Miami. Can’t imagine that’s all “good” weight and what they want him to be at for TE. Seems like dropping 15-20 lbs is more in the ideal range for TE. O Line still has several injuries and guys that won’t be participating in Spring practice.

    • I’m waiting for closer to $100, but would buy hand over fist there. NVDA is Apple circa 2008. The market is strangely looking for reasons it’s not rather than taking the gift horse.

Andrew nemec is reporting the Beavs will get a 6’3″ WR from the state of AZ and he will announce on March 16. He will choose the Beavs over ASU, WA, Utah and Boise State. Cynai Thomas is the brother of Skyler Thomas so I’m sure that helps his decision making.

I can’t recall that we’ve had too many 6’3″ WRs..

  6. Meet Maalik Murphy, Oregon State’s charismatic, reformed Duck-loving quarterback who insists ‘this is my last stop’

CORVALLIS – Some first-day spring practice observations about Oregon State quarterback Maalik Murphy:

He’s charismatic. It’s clear Beaver teammates love the Duke transfer. While Murphy was doing a one-on-one interview Tuesday at Valley Football Center, OSU teammates would periodically walk by, and not just nod hello.

“Is that Maalik Murphy, the goat?” said receiver Trent Walker, patting him on the back. “You look good, man. You look good.”

The 6-foot-5 Murphy throws a beautiful ball. With rain often falling over Tuesday’s practice, Murphy threw darts, short and long. Murphy said after practice that he once threw 83 yards in high school.

“I don’t know if I’ve got that anymore,” Murphy said.

Murphy’s ideal school is, rather was, Oregon. Growing up in southern California, Murphy dreamed of being a Duck. He got a UO offer, but it happened during the pandemic, so he didn’t visit. There was a coaching change, and it didn’t work out.

“I’m probably going to be the most excited guy on the team when we go down there and play this fall,” Murphy said of the Beavers’ Sept. 20 game in Eugene.

Told he might want to keep that under wraps, Murphy smiled and said “I’ve already got a little bit of hatred. Being around these guys, that flips immediately.”

Murphy is mature. He’s not exactly thrilled with every aspect of that, either. Murphy notes that he’s the oldest among Oregon State’s quarterbacks.

“It’s kind of weird in that aspect,” he said. “A lot of dudes on the team call me ‘Unc,’ and I don’t really like that.”

But maturity helped Murphy get through some tough news at the end of 2024 season. Murphy helped Duke win nine regular season games for only the second time in school history after passing for 2,933 yards and a Blue Devils-record 26 touchdowns.

Yet days after the season ended, Murphy was in the transfer portal, looking for a new school. Duke informed Murphy that it was moving on, despite his success.

Yet there will be no revenge tour for Murphy in 2025, no I’ll show Duke what they’re missing. It’s clear he processed the news as business, not something personal.

“Of course it sucks initially. It’s kind of like getting fired from a job,” Murphy said. “But life moves on. I couldn’t just sit and dwell on it. Just take your next step forward and make it your best step.”

Murphy said he leaned on his parents, coaches who are close to him, and friends. He took that next step. To Oregon State.

The two have flirted in the past. Murphy received an offer from the Beavers as a high school sophomore. Following the 2023 season after Murphy left Texas for the transfer portal, Murphy briefly visited Oregon State before opting to enroll at Duke.

There was no turning back after his third interaction with OSU. Murphy said he saw what the Beavers had for receivers – he’s known Darrius Clemons since high school – and viewed himself as “one missing piece” from getting the Beavers back to a tradition of successfully throwing the ball.

Following his two-day visit to OSU, Murphy had some powerful words for coach Trent Bray.

“As I was leaving, I just told him, I think this is where I want to be,” Murphy said.

Murphy makes it clear that his game is pro style, though he’s not opposed to running. He said if there’s a professional comparison, it’s probably former Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert.

But enough about the Ducks. Asked what he would say if a Beaver fan asked what he can do to return Oregon State to winning following a 5-7 campaign in 2024, Murphy said his pitch is simple.

    Do your job.

“I don’t have to try to be Superman. I don’t have to try to be somebody that I’m not. If I go out there and be myself, I can contribute to this team,” Murphy said.

Murphy brings varied experiences to Oregon State. He spent two years at Texas, where everything is big, bold and rich. Murphy played a year at high-brow academic Duke, where his one season became one of the best in Blue Devils history.

Murphy said his experience at Texas “raised me. They kind of took a kid who was 17 years old from California to come in with hopes and dreams, and let me fulfill some of those. It was great. We had all that NFL talent and all the huge tradition. I loved it.”

Murphy’s takeaway from Duke was experience, which he hopes will continue at Oregon State. Between Murphy’s college experience and Oregon State’s seven-figure NIL commitment, there are plenty signs indicating he is the Beavers’ quarterback for the 2025 season.

Murphy said he doesn’t like having a reputation as a player who is quick to transfer, though it is very much in vogue in today’s college football.

“I didn’t want to transfer the first time. I’m not that type of player, not that type of person,” he said.

    Murphy’s eyes then narrow.

“This is my last stop,” he said.

Murphy has two years of eligibility remaining. A big year in 2025 could become a springboard to next year’s NFL draft.

“Whether I go to the NFL or come back here, and hopefully, they want me come back if it comes to that, but yeah, I’m definitely not going to transfer again,” he said.

  7. Larry Steele on Rueck giving walk on Ally Schimel a scholarship:
“…To get a scholarship at a university like Oregon State, under a coach and coaching staff that really knows what they’re doing — it is an amazing story line, the fulfillment of a young girl’s dream.”

Steele is Ally’s grandpa and, yes, she’s got a basketball playing sister who is a senior at Cobett HS.

It’s really an amazing story.given she went to Corbett HS and walked on. She really is a very skilled player and Rueck has knack for finding talented players regardless of what level of HS ball they played. She might have a stronger upside and higher ceiling to her game than Kennedie Schuler does based on my observations although Kennedie has made tremendous progress on her game the last 10-12 games despite her quirks at the FT line

      • Shuler is developing into an adequate backup, and that’s about it. Her weaknesses from the outside and midrange as well as free throw line will likely remain. Hopefully, Rueck can bring in a quality PG and get this team back to where it belongs.

    • To be fair, she probably should have been recruited more heavily out of HS.

She was held back by injury, I believe, or she would have been.

    • And she takes care of the ball!

Nice announcement on the scholarship. Those are great to see, the gesture and reactions are genuine.

  8. Wilner makes some good points in a discussion of the value of athletics to even a high brow academic outfit like Stanford:

Stanford’s administration has spent years living in fear of college football’s new era, petrified that accepting a transfer from the SEC — not just any transfer; an undergraduate transfer — could spark an institutional identity crisis and that a winning season could somehow tank its U.S. News and World Report ranking.

That’s only the case if your worldview is rooted in the bowels of Stanford’s National Accelerator Laboratory in the hills to the west of campus.
A closer look reveals no such correlation.

Duke has won 26 games over the past three seasons and beat Clemson and Florida State in the process. Over that time, the school’s U.S. News ranking has gone up.

Does anyone think less of Vanderbilt since it slayed Alabama with a quarterback (Diego Pavia) whose college career began at the New Mexico Military Institute?

Northwestern not only experienced a hazing scandal and fired its coach in 2023 but then had the unmitigated gall to win eight games. We hear it’s still a pretty good school.

In his defense, who thought Americans would voluntarily destroy the greatest superpower ever created because a few trans kids play sports?

What’s impossible for me to understand is how everyone views politics and individual issues as black and white or clearly right or wrong. Maybe you should look deeper into why 77 million people would vote for someone. Spoiler: I don’t think men playing girls was as the only reason they voted that way.

I criticized certain aspects of the last administration and was called a Nazi. Now that I am criticizing some of the current administrations actions, I am apparently a socialist.

Until people wake up, you will have two parties playing tug o war between the citizens and getting rich all at the same time.

          • 8
            9

LOL, sorry but if 9 years into the most obvious grift and you’re still defending the people he conned while he and Musk crash the entire economy to make themselves richer I have no interest in your opinion.

And the fact you’re still pretending “both parties” are the same is just fucking embarrassing. Enjoy the Trump depressions, crashing the economy to enrich themselves and gain more power was ALWAYS the plan and zero Democrats (or Republicans prior) were remotely as corrupt (nor was the corruption more obvious and in your face as a voter).

People still defending this are the dumbest humans to ever live.

          • 4
            7

One more point, I can’t understand how someone can’t see what is obvious “evil”

Name one thing Trump would’ve done differently in the last 6 weeks if he weren’t actively working for Russia? One.

Trump is the Manchurian Candidate. And it has been obvious for 9 years.

          • If he is such a “Manchurian Candidate” as you say, why did he give Javelin missiles to Ukraine in his first term? And why didn’t Putin invade Ukraine during that time? By your reasoning, Trump would have stood by and done nothing and Putin would have known it…..

Look dickhead. You were one of the ones that started this political bullshit on this thread yesterday at 1:21pm and now you want others to show “respect” when they disagree with you. Here’s some advice asshole: restrict the discussion to Beaver sports and leave the politics out of this site.

            7

Actually I made an offhand joke then did make a political post, after which the owner of the site asked for it to stop and unlike you I will respect that.

I am happy to have this discussion with you, you’re a brainwashed idiot and could use some facts but angry asked for it to stop. So either respect that or don’t but I don’t give a fuck about you. I won’t be responding again to your angry rant. Go masterbate to your MAGA poster.

      • He just needs a more expensive roster…and a bigger paycheck apparently.

I am surprised with their obvious resources they are paying OT transfers from Texas State and I think UNLV(?) for this season. They could be vulnerable in the first half of the season…

        • I think it was a Nevada OLineman, rather than UNLV. Recruiting sites rated him as the top OL available in the portal, but I’m not sure if that was before or after he signed at oregon

    • I said this with Smith, look at the buyout to leave? Lanning’s $20M is a loyalty buyout, Smith’s $3M was a waiting for a better offer buyout.

    • 2
      1

I hate the hole but another school that defeated Ohio State,Michigan and Penn State in the same year like Lanning did this year. His only loss was to the best team in the country. He should be one of the top 10 highest paid football coaches. What is sick is that’s thanks to ESPN he makes more than our entire coaching staff.

      • And he lost when it counted, he could have lost 2 out of 3 of those games abs still been in the CFP. He’s 0-2 in playoff games. I’m counting the PAC title game vs UW since the winner was in.

      • “…(name) another school that defeated Ohio State,Michigan and Penn State in the same year like Lanning did this year.”

Fair enough I guess. But some put UO’s roster #1 at $23M NIL, (topping second place Ohio by about $3M) , and their schedule broke pretty well for them (7(?) home games, plus road game at Corvallis, Ohio and Penn State at home?).

What was impressive to me was getting so many free agents to play together so well early and consistently: transfer in staring QB, CB, WR, DT, and kicker….

The salary amount is crazy stupid, no matter who he beat. This country is crazy about its football…a 32 team NFL, plus a pro college league now….SO many games, so much money changing hands….

      • Seems like everything. Overall everyone is commenting about just how different the vibe is from last spring, lots of intensity/energy and a lot less “learning”. Some saying it’s looked better than any practice even from fall camp last year.

Maalik living up to hype (although not in sync yet). But more encouraging to me is Gabarri and Gutridge are coming out guns a blazing looking ready to play.

Hankerson looking a step faster, Allah put on 15lbs of good weight and looking ready.

All the young Defensive players forced into action looking developed and made plays the first 2 days (Foster/Vadrawale)

New OL transfers looking like contributors, OL over all looking better than expected with several sitting out recovering from injury.

Defensive front additions looking substantial, OLG Walker Harris from Southern Utah has been making plays.

        • Thanks!

I think Murphy looks legitimate and importantly seems to enjoy the role and have fun.

I expect Allah to impress this year.

        • Doesn’t the media only get to see about 10-15 minutes of practice?
OSU media always starts out spring with a giant Beaver boner.

          • When it comes to practice reports of course you gotta take em with a grain of salt, and there are some observers that I trust a lot more than others. But it’s the same group of folks (from different/competing outlets) that saw the team practice last year and across the board they’re all saying the team looks way better.

They didn’t start out with Beaver boners last year. Both Blitz/Sedge crew bet 5-7 wins after watching Spring/Fall camp noting the Defensive Line and QB’s as liabilities, and we saw how that played out in the season.

Last spring there was lots of hedging and being polite in saying “there’s lots of learning” and “getting to know the new system” and “QB’s are a work in progress” etc.

Not seeing any of those vibes this year so far.

            FWIW.

          • Asked Ryan Harlan of Beaversedge (probably the best of the practice reports) and they get to observe the entirety of Spring practice, just limited on what they can film. Gets more restrictive as they get into Fall camp and game weeks.

        • I heard a week or so ago from someone with the team that his arm is incredible but that he isn’t picking up the plays as fast as they hoped for. Hopefully it just eventually clicks for the guy.

          • DJU looked perplexed by the new playbook and got out played by BG/Chiles in the spring after transferring too.

Expect Maalik to need some time to get it together, it’s his 2nd season in a row learning a new offense and it’s a big departure from what they were doing at Duke.

But that arm/physical talent sure is there.

Love that Gabarri and Gutridge have put in the work and are playing so well and can challenge him.

I just checked SD record and they are 2-10 so far losing a few close games but getting blown out in other losses. I’d like to say the beavers should sweep this series, but it is baseball and even a solid pitcher on a bad team can shutdown the opposition. Go Beavs and hopefully Trosky can get into the lineup…..

I like the telecast. Is it being produced by P-12 Enterprises or whatever it’s called? I wasn’t able to watch it from the beginning.

  13. Pepperdine beats Portland 86-73. Beavs will play the Waves tomorrow night at 6pm. Good result as the Beavs beat them times they played and did not struggle with them as much as they did vs the Pilots

Seemed to me the spirit of Casey was in the ballpark, at least for last night. Some outstanding defensive plays, aggressive base running, and a little small ball! Except for Segura’s troubles, not much about which to complain.

Singer’s play at 2b was especially impressive, and how ’bout Krieg knocking down that screamer and getting back to cover first for the out!

I’d like to hear others opinions, especially Bill and Creekwater. Wannabeav (yes, the yacht has docked) was spot on when he pointed out the extended time Mundt had to sit in the dugout as his mates scored 4 runs; it really did seem to affect him.

Caraway with an E today continues to be the clear leader in that category, if Trosky is healthy I continue to feel Caraway’s spot is PH with Trosky at 3b.
I like Caraway as leadoff, just looking for more reliability in the field, am I wrong?

  16. MBB playing like crap on defense once again. Rataj is in an ankle brace and has been ineffective in the first half (one point). Beave up 40-38 thanks to Kingz going off.

    • Down 57-51

Could still win but good lord Stinkle’s teams are always so unprepared away from Gill. Jekyll and Hyde

      • He is a tournament master. He took a team picked to finish 12th in conference, won the conference tourney and got to the elite 8. What more do you want from the man??

  17. 2
    2

Pepperdine wins 77-73. BAD LOSS. Forget the NIT now. Not happening for the 5th place WCC team that can’t even win a conference tournament game against a bad team.

What excuse ya gonna use now?

Fuck you Wayne Tinkle. How much longer to we have to suffer through his bullshit?

    • When is Tinkles’ contract up? Do they let him coach as a lame duck for the last season in the WCC and then fire him? He’s not going to have a competitive team in the new P-12.

      • This!!!

These jokers would get absolutely destroyed by good MWC teams.

It’s not because the talent isn’t there

      • I would rather use this year’s collapse as the reason to do it now (fire Tinkle). Eat the money while you still have a little in the bank, and give the new coach a year in the WCC to get their feet wet before the new Pac starts.

        Tinkle gotta go.

  18. Unfortunately I don’t think they are in any position to. But if I was the AD. I would be having a little meeting with Tinkle after that flop. The sad thing is they had some decent talent this year. I would say they had enough talent to be a tournament team. With good coaching.

  19. 9

At least softball beat the #12 Quacks 5-2, that’s something anyway. MBB was shameful tonight, so tired of the regression most seasons.

  20. 5
    1

Tinkle is like clockwork. Every year we can the first 10 games of good basketball and the team playing together because they haven’t been coached by Tinkle. Once you get to January it is always a slow descent into futility. No different this year except he had a better roster and can’t coach his way out of a paper bag. He ruins careers in a season and we can expect about 6 of these guys to have enough fits to just move along rather than play or Tinkle another year. Rataj is the outlier and is working on a pretty intense degree but the rest will depart and Tinkle will get to moan about a new roster and chemistry, not realizing the irony every season is he wrecks team chemistry as the season goes along. I’m glad I didn’t watch another frustrating display from his teaming a late season debacle.

    • It was a fairly weak non-conference schedule, though they showed promise against Oregon. Lost to both semi-decent teams they played (Nebraska, North Texas) and were damn lucky to come from behind to beat Oakland. Probably another twenty loss team if the P-12 hadn’t imploded. Ok, record for a mid-major, which is unfortunately what they’ve become.

  21. 1
    2

Wayne Tinkle’s contract as head coach of Oregon State men’s basketball runs through the 2026-27 season following a four-year extension announced in April 2021

    • He has been overpaid and mailing it in for the last 6 years. Such a frustrating spot for OSU to be stuck with him for 2 more years.
I am confident that at least 10 guys off of this board could take half of his salary and do as good or slightly better or worse than Tinkle. Basically a net gain of salary without much impact to wins/losses.
He loses in so many ways due to baffling coaching decisions.

      • Here is some good news…..WT probably has an incentive clause that if they win 20 games and make at least the NIT, he will get a raise and/or another year added to his contract. There’s always a silver lining for the OSU MBB program. Lol

  22. WBB up by 17 in the 1st half and now down by 2 points in the 4th quarter. They’ve blown a bigly lead and better find a new coach and fire Rueck if they lose. Lol

  23. Well, looks like Rueck saved his job. Rees fumbles a pass and regathers the ball and drives the baseline and takes an awkward shot at the buzzer that goes in and Beavs pull it out 61-59.

Shuler also had a steak and a breakaway layin late on the game to tie the score.at 61 if I remember correctly. I dogged her early in the season bc of poor Free throw shooting and turnovers but man she really showed tremendous growth over the past 12-15 games. Wow

    • “Arguably the biggest sophomore breakout in Oregon high school football this fall has been Lakeridge athlete Noah Tishendorf.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound edge-rusher and offensive weapon registered 23 tackles-for-loss, 10 sacks, one forced fumble and an interception and was named SBLive Sports’ “breakout underclassman” in the state of Oregon.

  27. Left for dead 11 months ago, Oregon State women are on doorstep of an NCAA Tournament berth”

    Great headline…

“LAS VEGAS – If we’ve learned anything about Oregon State women’s basketball, it’s never stop believing this program has exhausted its magical moments.

Some 11 months after making a run to the 2024 Elite Eight, the Beavers are back making memories. A roster that was completely turned on its head by the transfer portal last spring is 40 minutes from an improbable NCAA Tournament berth.

No. 4 Oregon State advanced to the West Coast Conference championship game Monday with a 63-61 win over top-seeded Gonzaga at Orleans Arena. The Beavers are on the verge of an NCAA tournament appearance after winning back-to-back WCC games on their final possession.

Oregon State is far from the team it was a year ago. That team had potential All Americans, and players who might participate in the year’s Final Four. But in tearing themselves down, the Beavers have rebuilt themselves into something fun to watch and follow.”

Just turned on ESPN at 9:00 and the lead story was Kennedie Shuler’s game winner against Zags…I’ve got to think of OSU beats UofP tomorrow, that will be a huge boost for recruiting players

  29. Isn’t today the scheduled meeting of the Pac 12 (8) Presidents to discuss media rights and moving forward?

I’m surprised it’s so quiet on that front.

    Mildly funny:

“Lanning is 3-4 vs. rivals Washington and Oregon State, 1-1 in conference championship games and 0-1 in CFP games. And just got $60 million — no matter what happens over the next six seasons.

    There’s your unsustainable, everyone.

And it’s nothing to laugh about.”

  31. WBB out scores Portland in the second quarter by 14.
At the half Beavs up 27-17.
    Beavs lead in RB’s 26-17
Beavs D has held Port to 19% shooting.

      • Despite the Pilots’ gaudy record, which is nothing to sneeze at, their issue is they not only didn’t win any quad 1 games, they didn’t even PLAY any. And they actually only played one quad 2 game. 29 of their games (including 3 of their losses) were quad 4.

        • 4
          1

Yes, but they are objectively better than some teams getting votes for the top 25. Placing them outside the top 50 is monumentally backwards.

People would know this, if they just watched the games, instead of counting quads.

          • NET ranking prior to today’s loss was 81 and that’s just not going to get it done. Remember, the net ranking is really all that matters. While they might meet the eyeball test, they don’t meet the metrics test.

          • The metrics test is obviously flawed, and it will be be humans who lazily confirm its biases.

UP’s two worst losses are “quad 4” losses… to OSU.

  32. I’m not going to hold my breath, because Portland is having one of those seasons where they don’t know how to lose.

But the Beavs pulled a 18-4 second quarter and are up 27-17 at the half.

  33. 25

Not to take anything away from the players, but Scott Rueck is in his bag, as the kids would say.
How do you completely dismantle a final 4 team and build a new tournament team in 1 offseason? Pretty freaking impressive

    • How do you do it?……………….listen to the postgame vid posted below; said it before, the man is a teacher with total belief in his system and culture.

How about his comments of feelings towards those who transferred out. A sign of his personal character to say he understood their position/decision.

  34. The Men’s team needs a guy like Scott Rueck. Sheesh. What a coach. He can turn any group into winners. Just further highlights how much disappointment we have had to face with Tinkle.

  35. 12
    2

To all of those gals that bolted after last season…..I hope the Beavs get matched up with a former beaver and knock them out of the NCAA tourney!

  36. “Oregon State’s defense played a big role, holding Portland to 22% shooting. The Beavers mauled the Pilots on the glass, outrebounding UP 54-33.”

Wow, what a great way to cap the regular season. So impressed with their fortitude.

  37. 4
    1

Is there any way we could have Rueck coach both the men’s and the women’s teams? Maybe have dual practices?

    Only half joking.

    • It’ll never happen, but would be interesting to see how his approach would work with men. There is some truth in his belief that, “Women have to be happy to win, while men have to win to be happy.”

      • Nice new york times article (the athletic)about wbb. Scott gave a little dig at the end to last years team, “This team did what last years couldn’t, win a championship”. I’d post but it’s behind a pay wall

          • Not that anyone is looking forward to Rueck moving on – I don’t know if he’d be as successful at a “name” school where there are expectations, egos etc. But Sidney Wiese seems like she’d be a great head coach, just hearing her on pre-game shows talking about the team. Build Scott a statue already, maybe they could get a group discount and add statues for Jade Carey and Pat Casey.

    • Good point, but I think the kind of happiness that Rueck wants for his gals is more a “family comfort/support” vibe than the male NIL aspect which seems more individual.

    • “The former Oregon State Beaver emerged as one of the league’s top punters in his second year, limiting opponents to just 79 punt return yards on his way to Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors. He earned a second-team All-Pro nod in 2014 before ripping off three straight years as a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro. Hekker led the league in punts, punt yardage, and yards per punt in 2015 with similar production in 2016. Improvements to the Rams offense under Sean McVay in 2017 reduced Hekker’s volume, but he remained effective at pinning opponents deep in their own territory.

…landed him on the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.”

      Talk about a late bloomer…

Beavers had another punter that left due to playing time when Hekker was starter….that guy had a very good career with the Patriots, probably didn’t get to punt as much!

  38. Interesting note RE new recruit Tishendorf’s versatility:

    “Tishendorf is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds…

Tishendorf was named the defensive lineman of the year in the Three Rivers League. He was a first team all-league selection at defensive line and was an honorable mention running back. He was also a first team all-state selection at defensive line.

Tishendorf was a multipurpose player for the Pacers, which included using him as a wildcat quarterback in running situations.”

    • 2019 through 2022 there was a two-day Sisters Blues Festival. Greatest kept secret event each summer…looking at you Hayden Homes. Sisters City park, probably 600 people a day. Most were the upper crust Sisters residents and they would leave at sunset. After that, ~250 people left.

Went all three years, saw LP before they were LP. Every artist I wanted to see, I was at the front of the stage with no crowding. Favorite moments: eating a burrito with David Hildago of Los Lobos at the side of the stage watching Walter Trout, then him jumping on stage to jam. Larkin Poe trying to introduce themselves while an unknown, watching Eric Gales jamming with Mr. Sipp and Kingfish at the end of the night, and hanging out with EG during other sets.

Eric Gales closed out 2022…we had an Uber to drive us back to Bend. He was closing out the set with a medley of Back in Black/Kashmir and Voodoo Child. Uber driver pulls up and says to us, “What the fuck is this?” We just laughed.

Only 3 hits for Beavs, but 7 bb’s and 2 hbp helped.

Beavs 30, Grand Canyon jumped up to 56 (4 spots below nike u).
    UCLA and Stanford 7 & 8
    FWIW

SOS pretty similar for Beavs and Grand Canyon

  44. How much is parking for baseball games? I know the lot beyond left field is permitted, but what about the garage, the lots by the performing arts venue and Reser?

    • Pitching has been solid today and the bats have been productive. This might be the Beavs best game so far against a really solid club.

  45. 1

Spoke too soon as segura gives up 2 or 3 walks and walks in a run. I’m glad he’s getting the hook at 6-1 in top 8 with one out bases juiced. DP gets us out of the inning.

      • “As the ball flew awkwardly, seemingly zigzagging in the wind, it sent Canon Reeder and Talt zooming toward the same spot at the warning track. At the last second, Talt knelt to his knee with his glove raised, poised to make the catch. But, out of nowhere, just before the ball would have landed in Talt’s glove, Reeder darted in front and made the catch, diving head-first to the turf.”

        • Interesting bc the announcers said the opposite. I didn’t really get a close look at the play but heard it from the announcers

This is where a normal friend of the blog would simply apologize and move on, but esucks is a troll so he doesn’t consider an apology applicable. Good job oob for setting the record straight on a seemingly innocuous detail. Mike Parker called it and talked about the play extensively in the post game show.

          • Which one are you referring to? That the announcers states Reeder made the catch or that Talt actually made the grab but it was Reeder that attempted the diving grab?

  46. 1
    4

Morrell gets Wakefield on a backwards k to start 9th. Wakefield was 4-4 before trying to show up the ump on a called strike with 3-1 count and then throws the same pitch location to get the K. Easton Talt makes a diving catch in right center to get the third out.

It wasn’t pretty the last 2 innings but they got it done. Big win against a solid team that should improve their RPI from #29.

  47. Damn! Could BIG JIM, Parker, Freeman, and the TV guys have the call wrong on the final out yesterday?

Here’s the vid, watch starting at 2:18 and make your own determination.
    https://youtu.be/ogAeZDeUmvs

PS: don’t ya just love the GCU first baseman? looks like he really enjoys the game, noticed he visits a lot with Beavs who reach 1b all game long.

    • Talt had it in his glove and held it up. You can clearly see the ball. One of those bang bang plays that id like to hear both players explanations. Could it have hit the ground or bounced off Reeder into his glove? It was hard to tell because Reeder was blocking the view with his dive.

Maybe they’ll be some interviews or info on the pregame show today

        • I watched this play a few different times on replay and thought the same thing too. However, upon a closer look what appeared to be the ball in Talt’s glove I think was a billboard on the fence with a portion of white from the signing peeking through his gloves webbing. So, the announcers calling the game thought that Talt caught the ball too when I think Reeder actually came up with it.

I didn’t listen to any post game comments, and I wonder if they asked the two players who actually caught the ball? I certainly thought it was Talt based on the announcers comments but it might have sort of an optical illusion.

          • 2
            1

WTF are you even talking about? There’s no billboards behind Talt. There is white painted on lettering on the outfield padded fence.

Pause the video at 2:28 and 2:29.

The ball is CLEARLY in Talt’s glove and there’s green behind where he is holding it.

Anyone that can’t see this needs their eyes examined.

          • Yep. Crazy play and I will apologize to Esucks, because it does look like Talt made the catch, and had it all the way in the wind. Reeder had more of a chance to knock the ball out of Talts glove than to catch it based on the video. Parker was watching Reeder tracking it and didn’t really mention Talt in his call.

          • 3
            1

I just went back and watched it 3 more times and yes it was Talt who came up with it in front of the Forest Emerald Products billboard.

Up above others were suggesting that Reeder caught the ball and it almost appeared as he did but Talt made the grab.

What really matters is the beavers won their 7th straight game and Keljo had another solid outing.

I think I’m going to have to reverse my previous prediction of this being an Omaha team at this point. The team continues to show a lot of the struggles that we’ve seen with Mitch teams, and, unlike previous years, seem to lack “it” factors. Our best win, UVA, appears to be turning out to be overrated. We lost to both SEC teams we’ve played, and we don’t have a reliable ace like Hjerpe et al, nor do we have a clutch batter like Bazzana, Forrester, etc. Just thinking about the super regionals a few years back when they brought Hjerpe in on less than one days rest to serve as a closer to give us a win in game two against Auburn.

Would love to be proved wrong, but I think this team might be a regional exit right now.

    • 2
      5

Yeah, I have to agree bc the Beavs are now a paltry 13-3 with a 7 game win streak. Yeah, pitching has been atrocious too as Keljo just keeps winning and the bullpen has been stepping up too. Beavs bats were poor yesterday too only getting 10 hits and scoring 6 runs beating GC#1 starter. This team is just overrated and not very good. Lol

      • 4
        2

Are you familiar with strength of schedule? The only teams we’ve beaten so far who are above .500 are UNLV, UVA, GCU, and Baylor. We also have a loss to a below .500 Minnesota team. With the exception of UVA, it’s not like these are powerhouses either.

I’ll delete my account if this team goes to Omaha.

        • 5
          3

We don’t have a reliable ace like Hjerpe? Yet, Keljo is undefeated and shutdown GC, a team that just beat Oregon in Eugene. His pitching performances have been solid in really poor weather conditions and as the weather improves, his pitching will get even better as is usually the case playing in Oregon.

The SOS is a direct result of playing an independent schedule. Teams were unwilling to come to Corvallis bc they are playing conference schedules and won’t travel to Corvallis. That is why OSU is playing ~64% of their games on the road this year.

The Beavs are just 16 games into the season with several new players as well as young pitchers. So it’s way too early in the season to predict how things will end up in June.

The 2006 and 2007 teams didn’t catch fire until later in those seasons. 2006 they were 50-16 and 16-7 and 2007 they were 49-18 and 10-14.

Finally, losing several key players like TB as well as Hainline, McDowell, Holmes, Kmatz, and a few others from last year’s team was a major change to the lineup so there’s always going to be somewhat of a drop in production. Losing TB, the #1 pick in the draft and arguably one of the best hitters if not the best of all time, was a major loss.

Given all of the holes the Beavs had to fill and going independent would normally be a major drop-off for any other program but the Beavs are ranked #8 and continue to just win. If you knew anything about baseball, you’d know it’s just keep winning and that’s what they are doing.

So relax bc there’s a lot of baseball left to play.

Santa Clara is now 8-7 having been swept in 3 games by Texas, winning 3 out of 4 vs California. Hopefully the Beavs get another “W” today.

  53. lol out, going to be an interesting, entertaining football season:

“Oregon State’s first spring scrimmage shows a defense that’s regaining its Trent Bray style

CORVALLIS – Oregon State wrapped up the first portion of its 2025 spring practice Saturday, though you could have sworn the Beavers were getting ready for a late-season game.

The weather is unlikely to be much worse in November than it was Saturday, with a stiff, cold wind and steady rain throughout the 90-minute practice, the last until the second portion of spring drills resume Thursday, April 3.

It was weather that only a defense could love, and the Beavers did, particularly safety Jaheim Patterson. The 6-foot-4 junior had an interception and made a couple of thunderous tackles, including one where he rocked running back Cornell Hatcher Jr. in the backfield.

Patterson, who secondary coach Rod Chance once remarked “when he steps off the bus, we want him to step off first,” was beginning to emerge late last season. It’s a strong sign that he’s taken another step in becoming one of the leaders of OSU’s secondary.

“Having a safety who can come down and do that stuff, it’s a problem for offenses,” Oregon State coach Trent Bray said of Patterson.

Patterson’s play epitomizes that the style that is evolving with OSU’s defense through six spring practices. With Bray taking over the defense this spring, it’s apparent there’s a return to the aggressive, attacking style that the Beavers’ former defensive coordinator prefers.

While it’s too early to proclaim mission accomplished, Bray said he’s seeing progress on the pass rush. He likes that some of the defensive front transfer have “added some skill,” in addition to overall improvement from the returnees.

“We’ve got to improve our sack production, and production on the quarterback. I’m encouraged about where we’re at with that,” Bray said.

The secondary, particularly safety, is what stood out. If Patterson becomes the real deal, it bodes well for a position that includes seniors Jack Kane, Tyrice Ivy Jr. and Skyler Thomas, a three-year starter. Although Patterson is “as physical as a linebacker,” Bray said, he envisions Patterson playing plenty of coverage, too.

“Having those veteran guys with those new guys has been a good match. They’re pushing each other, competing with each other and not against each other, which is big for us,” Bray said.

The offense looked rough at times, but that is unsurprising. The Beavers are breaking in a new offensive line, a prized quarterback transfer in Maalik Murphy and several first-year assistant coaches. Though he’s the defensive coordinator, Bray said he’s kept a watchful on the offense this spring.

“I like what we’re doing. They do a lot of stuff that stresses us, which is great,” Bray said. “They’re going to get it cleaned up. It’s going to take a little bit of time, but I’m encouraged by what they’re doing.”

Offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson believes the offense is on track, even if “results-wise, we’re not where we want to be … but way ahead of where we were last year.”

Beaver fans are most interested in the progress and fit of quarterback Maalik Murphy, who transferred from Duke after leading the Blue Devils to a nine-win season in 2024. Murphy clearly throws a beautiful ball, but has been inconsistent this spring. That’s not surprising, as there’s a lot of learning of the offense to absorb, and timing with a crew of receivers.

Gunderson raved about Murphy’s intangibles, saying he’s at the facility at 6 a.m., and afternoons. He’s embraced teammates, and shows incredible leadership ability.

“The guy is a pro in that sense,” Gunderson said. “There are moments where you can tell he knows it, but he’s not confident in it, and there’s moments where he’s confident. … we just need to get him to where he feels really confident with what we’re doing.”

It’s clear Oregon State has a dynamic 1-2 punch in Murphy and redshirt sophomore Gabarri Johnson. Murphy is taller and more suited to operate in the pocket. Johnson is decidedly dual threat, and the combination of both on the field this fall could keep defenses on their toes.

ohnson’s skills might not show as much in a controlled practice scrimmage, as the whistle blows as soon as a defender gets near the quarterback for protection. There were several situations that Johnson could have made a play with his legs if not for a protective whistle.

Bray said with the addition of several veteran analysts who work as coaches during practice, including Robb Akey and Danny Langsdorf, “it’s been an easy transition” to head coach/defensive coordinator this spring.

The remaining nine practices this spring – including the spring game Saturday, April 19 – will have a different look than the first two weeks. Bray said the first six practice were heavy with the installation of plays. When practice resumes, it’ll be all about repetition.

“We’ll add some wrinkles on third down and red zone, but 90% of what we’re going to do is in,” Bray said.

Gunderson said during the two-week break, the offensive coaching staff will meet and discuss what they’re seeing.

“Is there anything we need to add? We’re not going to add just for fun. We want to get good at what we do,” Gunderson said. “The big thing, we want to see guys being confident and playing fast.”

    • Thanks for posting this. I cant say I remember Patterson much from last year, but I also didnt watch as much football as past seasons. Is it fair to say his game is similar to Oladapo? The Beavs could use another guy like him. Someone who has the ability to make those game changing plays with a well placed hard hit

      • I think so, but Patterson has a pretty limited sample size and a lot of potential given his size….I’m really looking forward to him with a year in the system, and playing under Bray’s aggressive style.

    • Go Barlow! Love seeing Tom Johnson finally get a state championship. And with homegrown kids too. Fuck Jesuit and all the other schools that just “recruit” all their talent from other districts.

  55. Carey kicking ass before 9K+ at Gill, and hoisting the chainsaw!

Maybe she should be a guest at a Beaver game this season and hoist the saw….

“Technically, it wasn’t Jade Carey’s final gymnastics meet at Gill Coliseum. But the two-time Olympic gold medalist made sure Senior Day was something special.

Carey set a career and school record in all-around and posted a pair of perfect 10s as Oregon State rolled to a season-best score of 197.700 Saturday in a dual meet win over Air Force.

Performing before a Gill Coliseum record crowd of 9,042, Carey scored 10s on balance beam and floor exercise, and 39.925 in all-around. Carey’s all-around total was .075 from perfect. Only one college gymnast has scored a 40.00, Georgia’s Karin Lichey in 1996.

Carey, a senior, scored 9.975 on uneven bars and 9.95 on vault. Carey’s all-around score is a national best this season. Carey’s 10 on beam is the second perfect score this season in that event nationally, and fifth 10 on floor.

Oregon State honored nine gymnasts on Senior Day. The Beavers have one home meet remaining this season, against Fisk next Friday. That meet was added to the schedule in January, after Senior Day had previously been scheduled.

Here is more on Saturday’s meet.

Tanner Douglas is just nasty stuff. Followed by AJ Hutchison who is pretty nasty in his own rights with his sidearm delivery close the door on GC 3-1.

I like how the pitching has really developed over the past 9 game winning streak. Hitting is still spotty from game to game, but they are producing just enough to win these close games.

  58. Tough regional playing North Carolina, Duke, WV, Vanderbilt, Oregon, Lehigh. Columbia/Washington.. Why they put Oregon in the same regional as OSU is a little interesting. In theory, if OSU and Oregon win the respective brackets, they could meet in a sweet 16 matchup, highly unlikely but you never know.

Careful what you order at Carl’s Jr. if you go there….

“A group of Oregon baseball donors have formed a business to help the program fund additional scholarships and Name, Image and Likeness opportunities for players.

Diamond Ducks has a goal of funding additional scholarships, up to the newly approved roster limit of 34 next season from the NCAA’s current 11.7 scholarship limit in baseball, and create more streams to support funding of NIL for players.

The “Diamond Duck Omaha Yellow Membership” is designed as an affordable option — $29.99 per month with a $149 initiation fee — for fans interested in supporting NIL efforts. Members will receive priority access to postseason tickets and other benefits.

The “Diamond Duck Omaha Green Membership” is a higher tier level of support for the program, costing $149 per month with a $349 initiation fee. Members will receive a custom engraved bat and batting helmet, VIP parking, priority access to postseason tickets and other benefits.

Former players, coaches and team managers are encouraged to job the “Diamond Duck Alumni Bat Club,” which will include a display of engraved bats outside the Oregon locker room with the names of all former players who join the group that will honor their respective legacies. Cost to join that group is $66.58 per month with a $249 initiation fee.

A Premier Club limited to 25 members is designed for major donors and will provide exclusive experiences, premium amenities at PK Park and a “deep level of engagement” with the program.

Diamond Ducks has also partnered with with Carl’s Jr. restaurants in Lane County, which are serving the Coach Waz Double Play Patty Melt, with $5 for every combo sold being donated to support the baseball program.”

In other news from quackville, BG’s Golden Gophers win 9-1 over nike which tallied 4 hits, 3 e’s, 3wp and a balk.

Oh, and regarding the Carls Jr thing, this news along with the sauce that outfit serves is enough to insure I’ll not set foot in their stores.

    • My thoughts as to seeing the likes of 15-19 SJSU (Net ranking 175) in the field as a 3 seed is we are likely about to see another mass exodus out the door, and an NIT invitation was declined for this reason. How else would you explain it?

        • I saw Wake Forest and South Carolina declined NIT bids. South Carolina finished 12-20. They don’t deserve to be in any tournament.

The SEC got 14 teams in the NCAA tournament (Texas is in a play in game)
The B1G got 8 teams in
          ACC – 4 and Big 12 – 7

That’s roughly half the field. Honestly, after the first 2 rounds for any potential upsets I may not even watch. We’re going to be seeing some conference teams play a 3rd of 4th time by the sweet 16. So tired of this bullshit and the deck being stacked.

          • And believe it or not, Craig Robinson’s old favorite the CBI tournament still exists and is entering its 18th year I think. Looks like they only have 11 teams selected. I remember when they used to be able to attract power conferences.

      • Daschel hinted at “good news for Beaver fans” or something to that effect, while also predicting we would land in either the NIT or CBI, so something happened that was a surprise to him.

          • Half the field is from the old PAC-12. At least, they got some more brand name teams in this tournament. Surprised that Boise State which just missed the Big Dance is here instead of the NIT.

          • 1
            2

Well, the team went 20-12 and ten years ago that would have been good enough for an NIT bid. Going to Las Vegas isn’t a bad trip for the team so I’m sure they’re happy to still be playing.

Someone earlier mentioned another mass exodus but I’m not sure the beavers have enough talented players to warrant a mass exodus. Certainly Rataj, Minor and maybe even Fallah are talented enough to warrant some interest, but I’m not sure they are high valued NIL prospects except for Rataj.

I guess after the Beavs win the Crown tourney, we shall see who stays and who leaves.

          • Did I understand correctly that the portal opens on March 24th? Players could opt out of these secondary tournaments if they have a nice NIL offer from elsewhere, right? Why risk injury in a meaningless game?

          • It’s hoops.

These guys would be playing noon ball every day, or pick-ups at Dixon, if they’re not practicing or playing.

It also gives you face time and tape for any prospective buyers.

What does it take to get Tinkle to go? Is the buyout too much? Both the AD and Tinkle should be satisfied that Tinkle has had enough time and opportunity. One would think there would be mutual interest in moving on so each party has a fresh opportunity to enjoy success.

    • He beat Gonzaga this year, brought in some good talent, osu isn’t a basketball school at all. I wish we were in the big tourney. Not sure there’s an upgrade out there willing to come to osu. Any names that would be willing to come here? Tony Bennett and Randy Bennett aren’t coming here so let’s skip those names. We are very very lucky to have Rueck and the legacy Pat Casey left to keep talent coming in for baseball.

      • Yeah, I hate to say it because I want him gone as much as the next person. But given where they were at the end of last year, the fact they were able to put together an NIT level team and beat the best team in the conference at least earned him one more year. But good gravy gotta win some road games!

  61. Supposedly we had our choice between the CC and NIT and chose the CC. Prevailing opinion here has been that this team was good enough for the NIT, probably wasn’t a tourney team.

So, all kidding aside, this seems like a successful season, right?

    • The CC is much more financially viable and comes with NIL incentives for the players.

The NIT/CBI are traditionally net $ losers for participants and they haven’t modernized to combat that, not surprised so many elected to go to the Crown.

    • NIT might as well be dead at this point. CBC is actually attractive. Players get to go to Vegas and they get NIL opportunities. It’s going to become the new trend with lesser tournaments.

    • It’s a better choice; look at the teams involved. I knew something was off with the NIT when San Jose St got an invite. The NIT used to require .500 or above. CBI used to attract Power conferences and now it’s an 11-team joke.

  62. Just watched some highlights of NC WBB games with VA, LVille and California. They are very good offensively at the post and have some excellent guard play and shooters from the three points range. I think the beavers have the interior defenders to slow them down but the beavers are going to have play excellent perimeter defense if they have a shot at winning. The Beavs play solid defense and if they can keep NC below 60 points, they have a shot. Oh, I forgot to mention that NC is pretty athletic too

  63. 1
    7

Just checked out team stats for NC 1st #s:

Scoring margin: 12.8 PPG (solid)………….1.5 OSU
    FG %: 43% (good),,………,……………………….41%
    3 PT %: 34% (average),.,………………………..28%
    FT: 67% (weakness),…..,……………………….75%
    Rebounding margin: 3 (not great)………….6.4
    Turnovers per game: 13 (decent),………….16
    Assists per game; 14 ……………………………13
    Steals per game: 8 (very good)…………….. 6
    Blocks per game: 4 (good)…………………….3.5
    NET ranking: …….,.20…………………………..126

So the stats show advantages for NC in several categories, however, if the game is close, FT shooting could be a deciding factor. Plus, there’s no doubt that NC has played a much more difficult schedule.

X-factor: NC is expected to advance and if the game is close, all the pressure is on NC with little to no pressure on OSU.

    Prediction: NC 69 OSU 57

Just some thoughts on the past week of beaver sports,

Have to want Carey to win an all around title or individual title at NCAAs. School needs boost in the national athletic image department. Don’t think wrestling is going to offer any legit shots at titles.

Baseball is just trudging along. Good solid team but doesn’t have that aura of the special teams of the past. Maybe it’s because the weather at home has just been terrible.

Mens bball, you’d have to hope the reason why the mens team would accept a bid is if the team voted for it and the major returners don’t plan to leave. or maybe more likely, the players are using it as a final showcase before deciding to transfer. For the school, it’ll be a cheaper trip since it’s all held in Vegas vs having to travel to other schools in the first couple rounds. As for Tinkle, he’s pretty much going into a contract year next year. That’s when he shines. If not, then firing him becomes financially worth it. A replacement coach will undoubtedly be paid much less.

And there doesn’t need to be an analysis on the women’s game. They are 22 point dogs. All you need to know.

    • 4
      3

Baseball just moved up to #6 D1 baseball rankings. Pitching and defense is improving and the Beavs offense is starting to show signs of breaking out. This team doesn’t necessarily have the Bazzana type of player, but they have talent across the board and will continue to get better.

At 15-3, I’m not sure what else they can do. Just look around the country and every team has a loss or two. Still lots of baseball left and I like what I see so far.

Will they get to Omaha? I think they have a pretty good shot at it.

      • I have an opportunity for complimentary tix to the college World Series….so tempting because Beavs could end up there…

      • It sure helps to host the regional but baseball can be a strange sport at times. The team that won the 2nd of the b2b titles barely snuck into the tourney.

  65. Who cares about this UNC bullshit. Where was the outrage when that sleazeball Husky Meggs kept the Casey Beavers out of the playoffs in 2016 with a 35-19 record?

    • 7
      1

It’s all fabricated to keep talking about the blue bloods, SEC and Big10. They are killing the golden goose with this nonsense for each major sport. I’m kind of sick of SEC ruling every sport since ESPN signed the media rights deal as lead propagandist.
It is the ultimate conflict of interests and has been for a very long time. ESPN programming across all platforms pushes SEC superiority. I despise the uneven paying field they have created. In addition, they now destroy regional competition for 2/3 of the country to satisfy their propaganda.

  66. 1
    3

Well, if we thought NIL was crazy before, it just got crazier. After a lawsuit filed by several AGs from various states, the NCAA will lift a ban on their policy that prohibited athletes from negotiating a deal before enrolling with a specific school. It will also allow a third party to negotiate deals on behalf of players during the transfer portal window.

This change is pending final approval by the court but that’s pretty much a formality.

What does this mean for the schools? Get ready for an official bidding war and open the checkbooks. Personally, I’m not opposed to the players getting as much compensation as the market will bear, but I think as a protection for the schools, players should be required to sign an NIL contract that specifies the performance period of the contract, the amount of compensation, offered and accepted, termination for cause by either party and any clawback provisions. This agreement should include the third any third party involvement as well as the player, the collective and the university.

Without a binding and legal agreement representing the interests of all parties, it could cause further legal issues down the road and especially for the schools.

Well, you all might find this freaking hilarious…..Traitor Smith is now whining that P4:schools are poaching his best players….does that sound familiar? It’s not like he didn’t poach coaches and top players from OSU a when bolted from OSU. Wat a freaking hypocrite!

Oh Lordy. So you’ve been reading Facebook articles and citing them on here like they came from O-live? That explains an awful lot.

          • In other news, Aunt Debbie’s kids have all grown up. Debbie and John had a nice little snowbird vacation in Arizona. Debbie likes to spend her free time painting watercolors and attending Jazzercize class while John has developed a hobby restoring a classic 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner.

          • It is as good or as bad as most media sources these days. BTW, most of the articles come from other beaver sites like Beavs Edge, Pure Orange or Beavers Behind Enemy Lines.. When I cite the source, I don’t say an article comes from Oregon Live if it comes from some other site.

          • 1
            1

There are valid sources out there. They’re just industry/sector specific, and they report the details, not just broad strokes that allow people to incorrectly fill in the blanks.

O-live likes to run reports with a lot of the latter.

          • @ESPNsucks You think Facebook is a legit media source? Can I point you to reddit, at least they have to link the bullshit they put on there.

Ps. Cite means to quote. BTW, trusting your words about “most” of the articles come from legit OSU sports sites, is like trusting those headlines on Facebook. ESPNsucks should probably go back to following ESPN.

Also, I am saying all of this so that you maybe look outside of Facebook and do some research on your own. See an interesting headline, go straight to google search about it. If its legit you should find multiple real news sources Fox, CNN, etc. Read a variety of them and you’ll be able to see the fact by the things that are common between the sources and you can read around the BS.

          • I’ve used the correct terminology in my comment as far as site and cite so I’m missing your point. In fact, who really gives a rip anyway.

As far as using FB, it has some very good feeds to beaver SITES and good information as I CITED those sources for you.

  68. Bill Oram: Oregon State had Final Four dreams. What the Beavers have done instead might be even more impressive
“CORVALLIS — Shortly after the Oregon State women were announced as a No. 14 seed on Sunday, a white-haired woman in orange and black approached Scott Rueck inside an event space at Reser Stadium.

She told the Beavers coach that she would be watching his team’s first-round game against North Carolina.

“I know you will,” Rueck replied. “I count on you.”

She said she was excited to see the Beavers advance to the regional in Birmingham, Alabama.

“What it would be like to get to Birmingham,” Rueck said, indulging the fan’s optimism

No team seeded 14th has ever defeated a No. 3 seed in the women’s tournament, let alone won the two games required to reach the regional round.

“That would be something,” Rueck continued. “That’d be a story.”

“What it would be like,” the woman enthusiastically replied, “to get to Tampa.”

She was referring to the site of this year’s Final Four.

“Uh, that would be, uh, that would an even better story!” Rueck said.

What went unsaid by Rueck in that moment is that a Final Four is likely out of reach for this team. That the Beavers have already overachieved by winning the West Coast Conference tournament and earning the league’s automatic bid.

Could they beat the Tar Heels on Saturday? Sure. Why not? But expectations have changed for Oregon State.

And where the Beavers are today is perhaps as gratifying as any tournament run the Beavers have had in Rueck’s tenure.

Tampa? There was a time, of course, that Rueck had that in his sights for this season after last year’s team reached the Elite Eight and the entire roster was eligible to return.

“I thought we built a Final Four team,” Rueck said. “Who knows. You can never predict that. But a team worthy of competing for a Final Four and I felt very fortunate to be able to assemble that group.”

    He paused.

“Then circumstances said no. And that absolutely sucked.”

Realignment drove most of the Beavers’ key players away. Talia von Oelhoffen transferred to USC. Timea Gardiner went to UCLA and Raegan Beers to Oklahoma. Donovyn Hunter? Lily Hansford? Dominika Paurova? All gone.

“I had to mourn it,” Rueck said. “It took a month, three weeks of pain. Then there was a shift and excitement. What’s next? I’m still here. Who do I get to coach now?”

The answer was Catarina Ferreira and Tiara Bolden and Ally Schimel. It was AJ Marotte and Sela Heide and Kelsey Rees.

And what eventually emerged in the place of that delightfully determined team has become one of the best and unlikely stories in college basketball.

After starting the season 1-5 and losing to Minnesota by 45 points, the Beavers seemed destined for a losing campaign. A long, miserable season.

“This group was so far away from their potential at the beginning,” Rueck said, “and that’s the beauty of our story this year.”

Marotte had one word for those early days: “Chaos.”

“To have all these people from all different levels of college basketball and then freshmen and people from different countries,” she said, “it’s a whole mix of a bunch of unknowns.”

Slowly, the Beavers came together. Rueck stripped things back to the fundamentals, drilling simple things. Like setting good screens.

“This team was so fun to work with,” Rueck said, “because they wanted to be coached the whole time. They were humble, they recognized it and they were very appreciative. Nothing fills me like being around a group like that.”

In 29 years of coaching basketball, Rueck said, he has never had a team grow as much from Point A to Point B as this Oregon State squad.

“I don’t think it’s close, actually,” Rueck said.

What happens in March is that it is easy to forget that success is relative. One team might call its season a disappointment for losing in, say, a national semifinal, while another might call it a smashing success after losing in the first round.

“We’re not a 3 seed like we were last year,” Marotte said, “but for some reason this 14 seed feels even better.”

It took a strong finish to the season to get here.

The Beavers went 12-8 in conference play. Then snuck past San Francisco in the conference tournament on a Rees buzzer-beater. And nipped top-seeded Gonzaga with a game-winner by Kennedie Shuler.

By the time they faced Portland in the championship game on March 11, the Beavers were every bit as confident as they were at the end of last season. After beating the Pilots 59-46, Ferreira — a Baylor transfer — was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.

Rueck spoke glowingly on Sunday about the players who joined the program this year. Recruits who were not as highly rated as the ones they replaced and maybe didn’t expect to be playing for a team that was a win away from the Final Four just last year.

“But those roster spots opened up, they’ve stepped into them, and look what they’ve done with them,” Rueck said.

In a different world, on a different timeline, the Beavers would indeed be aiming for Tampa this week. And it would be both a real and realistic mission.

And no one would argue that such an achievement wouldn’t be absolutely wonderful.

But in this world? And on this timeline?

“This,” Rueck said proudly, “is as good as it gets.”

    — Bill Oram is the sports columnist at The Oregonian/OregonLive.

  69. “The Beavers on Monday moved up in three of the five major college baseball polls, surging to a season-high No. 6 on one ballot, after another undefeated week.

Oregon State climbed to No. 6 in the D1Baseball Top 25, No. 8 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 9 in the Perfect Game Top 25, dropped a spot to No. 10 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Poll and held steady at No. 11 in the Baseball America Top 25.”

    • I do wonder how high they will have to be in the rankings to assure themselves of a top 8 seed. They “should” win two-thirds of their remaining schedule, but I imagine their strength of schedule will be questioned, despite a few series against BiG teams, Oregon is the only currently ranked team they have left.

Silver lining, if the Beavs MBB team somehow makes a run and wins the Crown tournament, that’s another $300K towards buying out Tinkle.
If they bow out in the first round, it becomes a financial burden to even attend the tournament.

On the other hand, George Washington University is offering it’s team $500K in NIL (assuming it would be distributed around the players) for a Semi-Finals or better finish. But, this isn’t considered pay to play…..

I think GW is just talking about the overall prize total. Boise St says $50k to semi finalists. $100k to runner up and $300k to winner for the $500k pot of money.

This feels like the future of non ncaa post season tournaments. Held in one location for some prize money. Seems more attractive to teams vs playing all over for the NIT.

    • The cash awards are for the schools, I think. The players all get $10k NIL for showing up. But there’s an additional “unspecified” amount given to team NILs… I’m guessing performance based. I imagine any individual awards (MVP) would get some extra, as well.

      • Next year bowl games will need to offer $10k per athlete to play in the bowl game, which means the end of many bowl games. The whole financial side of it is not going to end well. Athletes want access to NIL and pay for play opportunities but no one wants them to be recognized as employees. Insane.

        • Is NIL money still treated as a donation? Currently, sponsors donate a lot of the swag that players get from bowl games. It seems like it would be feasible for them to make monetary donations, as well, as part of their partnership agreement with the bowl game.

          • This is contracted.

FOX will be paying the players for the rights to broadcast and own the games they play in this tournament.

It’s about as NIL as it gets.

A less angry post, a little over a week away from the start of the MLB season. Let’s check in on our Beavs. About 40 guys were still playing indy ball, minors or in the majors last year.

    Obviously in the starting lineup,
    Rutschman – Orioles
    Kwan – Guardians
Conforto – Dodgers – since he was in the opening lineup yesterday

    Probably platooning,
Larnach – Twins unless he’s been crushing lefties this spring

    In the rotation,
    Boyd – Cubs

In the minors and likely to be called up at some point during the year,
    Bazzanna – Guardians
    Hjerpe – Cardinals
    Eisert – White Sox

Got a courtesy look in spring training,
    Boyd – Guardians
Dernnedde – Guardians – Must be working hard, got a minor league deal after playing indy ball after Michigan. Or is he no longer a Beav?
    Gambrell – Red Sox

Working back from injury but will be playing at some point this year
Rasmusssen – Rays – He’s always working back from injury right?

Getting long looks in spring training, but long shots to make the roster
Meckler – Giants – still in big league camp as far as I can see but likely to start in AAA
Melton – Astros – injured early in spring training but still in big league camp. Could be the #4 OF

Ouch, that’s some bad luck – out for season
Madrigal – Mets – maybe shouldn’t have brought a cubs bag to the Mets facility.

I guess they don’t reference junior colleges in baseball reference,
one time beav Cam Booser is on the white sox but listed as out of OSU as that was his last listed college. So if he hits it big, why not claim him.

Guardians really like what OSU does as they have 4 players in their org

    • You could put together a pretty good MLB starting lineup with just Beavs.

~10 WAR from field players is better than last year’s White Sox, roughly in line with the A’s and other bottom tier MLB teams if you assume some of the fringe guys like Melton and Meckler would be slightly positive. Adley and Kwan carry most of the load there, but you have guys at almost every position that are decent replacement-level MLB players with some upside.

      • Maybe not “pretty good” from a MLB standard, but just as good as what some of these teams are trying to get by with!

Actually, if you only fielded players from only OSU and Nike, Portland could put together a pretty profitable baseball team with a reasonable payroll that would be about as competitive as Oakland, Colorado, Miami, etc. Pitching depth would be the only issue.

  72. 4

University of Portland WBB team has to be pretty upset they didn’t get an NCAA bid @29-4 and co-champs of the WCC. From what I read on another site, they didn’t play any Q1 teams and that probably was probably determining factor citing someone close to the decision making process. I hope they get a host site for a game or two in the NIT. UofP is a nice venue and they certainly deserve something for a 29-4 season and regular season co-champs.

    • Yeah, that’s insanity to me. What a great season. They did about as good as you can do with the schedule they had. Probably left out in favor of some mediocre big conference school that will lose in the first round anyway.

    • Lmao, man I am not gunning for you, you just say some off the wall nonsense sometimes so I have to respond.
Weren’t you the same guy saying after our three losses, our season is over?

Pretty sure I said let’s see where we are at at game 20. How are you feeling now?

      • I’ve always said the season is a marathon and not a sprint. I just recently posted that even one of the national title years the beavers were 10-14 in conference and something like 38-17 in the regular season. I will always argue it’s better to be hot at the right time of the season.

If I said anything about a losing streak, it was done with tongue in cheek. If fans don’t understand that a short term losing streak is just a snapshot of a season and not a full length movie, well, I don’t know what to say.

    • That answers the question about Trosky but had no idea about Morrell. Good news is we have plenty of arms and Trosky has missed the entire season.. Trosky tough bc back to back season injuries.

        • I agree but the policy is not to disclose nature of injuries. I’ve not seen anything official on Morrell but definitely have seen that Trosky. So, it could be Morrell is not out for the season. The last time he pitched just last week, no mention of any injury…..

People need to quit calling it “poaching”….transfer periods have willing participants in players.

Coaches unhappy with players leaving for better deals is hilarious….

  73. Texas just lost to Xavier, blowing a 10-point halftime lead. I didn’t see Pope play the last five minutes during crunch time. I hope the NIL was sweet.

And barely contributed to the team. I get what you mean but if I’m 20 ish years old in the prime of my athletic career, I’d rather be playing. Did he start playing basketball to make money or to play? He has plenty of years to go make 100k, 200k a year. If I was him, I would regret going somewhere to play a sport and end up playing sparingly. I would guess he will be back in the portal.

        • 2
          3

20 years old is not his prime, or if it is, he isn’t playing the game for money in the future. An alternate take is that even with less playing time, if he’s learning new and different things from a different coach, it could arguably inform his long term development.

  74. Zags is putting a 1-seed beat down on a not-16-seed Georgia.

    49-28 at the half.

Their game against Houston (should they win this one) could be one of the best games in the tournament.

One third of the way through the season for baseball, lets check in.

Watching all of the last few games and winning them all, it somehow feels like this team is under achieving and the team’s identity is still an unknown. Are you not entertained by a 10 game winning streak??? is clearly the response of orange colored glasses fans. But let’s see if the Beavs are a contender or pretender.

    Looking at the pitching staff,
One thing the team has consistently done in the past few weeks is letting teams who have no business playing a close game back in the game. It’s not because those teams are really fighting back, the Beavs have essentially walked them back in. Some themes from last year have continued.

    What do the stats say,
Walks per nine this year 5.4, last year 5.3. I’m counting HBP here too. So this stat has not improved.
Weekend guys are at 4.3 and the bullpen is 6.1 with Palmer being the worst at 10.8 but Segura is right behind at 9 per 9. Somehow none of Palmers have come around to score.

WHIP is ranked #10 right now. At 1.16 vs 1.35 last year. All the starters are under the avg.
Batting avg against – .189 vs .235 last year. All starters under the avg again.

So pretty clear in stats and the eyes, that the bullpen is holding the pitching staff back from being an elite staff. For context, walks per nine for the 2018 was 4.3. Lots of room for improvement, but will they? No one has stepped up to claim the shut down arm in the bullpen. So much for all that talent hyped in preseason. They do throw hard, but not for strikes.

But is it really pitching that’s holding the team back from being a title contender? Let’s take a look at the offense,
Power down as expected but maybe not this much. Is it the weather? Could be. Avg and OBP is about the same as last year. but slugging is way down.

Arquette and Caraway are the real deals. Enjoy them while you can. Kind of thought maybe both could hit .400 early in the year

Turley is making much better swing decisions but is that subtracting from his power? OBP is up 30 points but slugging is down more than 100 points

Macias’s issues is all between the ears. Obviously very talented but pressing hard. Reeder has stepped up to fill that hole. Have to wonder if Macias ever makes it back. McEntire is coming on too. He was a very highly rated recruit and full of potential.

Krieg is basically as expected. Big swings and long homeruns with a bunch of strikeouts. His defense is notably better this year though.

So the offense while hitting around the same as last year, just aren’t hitting as many homeruns. We’ll get an early look to see how much weather affected the bats. Nice comfortable weather in San Luis Obispo this weekend.

Fielding is about the same as last year. Not great but so far not costing them games.

Coaching is the same. Not a lot of questionable decisions.

So what to make of this team? Clearly have enough talent. Hitting is enough to win a lot but can the pitching staff stop hurting themselves? Reduce the walks and instantly they are a top 5 staff. The schedule is setup for a lot of wins. No real scary opponents. Biggest series will be at Oregon but I’d bet half the crowd is orange nullifying any home field advantage. Both sides of the ball have things to work on. That means finding a closer and a 7/8th inning guy. Have to start slamming the door on opponents. Singer and Krieg need to get better and they’ll win games when the pitchers get into trouble.

For now, supers seems like the ceiling again.

The super fun stat of the season,
Boyds world’s have the BIG10 as the 5th best conference. Ahead of them? The Independents! Who are 22-17 meaning they are really 6 -14 without the Beavs.

    • 1
      1

The below average offensive numbers make a strong case for more small ball. Unleash the speed in more steals and hit and run plays. More bunts to move runners into position. Plus more fun to watch versus a homerun or strikeout.

    • So who are the 8 CWS teams then? If the Beavs ceiling is the Supers then surely you follow college baseball enough to be able to opine on the 8(+) teams you find superior to the Beavs this season.

      • These are the teams that are putting it all together right now and it’s pretty much all SEC teams. They spend the money to be good and it’s showing. They all are in the top echelon for hitting, pitching and fielding. They also are top in k to bb ratio. Beavs are good in two of the three. Beavs slugging is ranked 105. If the pitching fails, it’s hard to expect the offense to bail them out.

        Tennessee
        Georgia
        Miss St
        Arkansas
        LSU
        Wake Forest
        FSU
        Florida

  76. The Beavs should fire Tinkle and go after Drake’s coach. First season and he lead them to a 30-3 record and held a potent Missouri offense to 57 points in first round win

Future PAC school Colorado State takes down potential future PAC school Memphis….

Is the new PAC going to have multiple, good men’s basketball programs: Gonzaga (obviously), SDSU(?), BSU(?), CSU(?), or are these flash-in-the-pan type seasons for the latter three?

Can the Beavers get a new coach and get some of this action?!?

    • I doubt Memphis is a target to add. It’s pretty clear, the PAC priority is to get into the Texas market by adding TX State and UTSA. Remember, PAC leadership has stated their priority is on the student athlete and not cross country traveling. While I’m Texas is not necessary western region specific, it’s much closer than Memphis.

My best year yet with bracket picks and i didnt watch a single team play a regular season game this year, except a few minutes of Duke off an on.
28 out of 32 1st round games correct.

  80. Riiiiich pulls Segura at 71 pitches (4 shutout innings)….probably a good limit, but now Douglas comes on.
    4-1 to start the b8

UPDATE: Douglas faces 3, k’s 2 and gives up an infield single (Caraway) Mundt on looking for 4 outs.

  81. 5
    2

What a weird ending. A 2-run shot by CP to get within 1 run in b9 with two puts us called back as a result of a pitching violation delay. Then on the final pitch to the next batter, a swinging strike three that OSU catcher drops but goes to pick up the dropped strike and throw the batter out at first but the batter accidentally kicks the ball away from the catcher and is ruled out for interference.

Like Parker has said, go to a baseball game and you’ll see something you’ve never seen before but back to back like that? Wow

  82. Despite some slop, Mundt gets those 4 outs, Beavs win 4-1.
Would be nice to see Dax go more than 5 tomorrow and not need a lot from the bullpen.
Turley and Reeder each with a 3 hit night, Caraway and Peterson hitless.
    Changed lineup not a problem.
Biggest question, of course, how long (if at all) will Keljo be out.

  83. Sela Heide Is very persistent, hope she stays healthy and makes a pro roster if she goes for it.

Finally healthy, ‘big Teddy bear’ Sela Heide’s breakout season helps fuel Oregon State run to NCAA Tournament

    Updated: Mar. 22, 2025, 7:24 a.m.|Published: Mar. 22, 2025, 6:44 a.m.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Could Sela Heide’s breakout 2024-25 season at Oregon State simply be a matter of feeling good?

For one of the first extended periods of her basketball career, the 6-foot-7 Heide is pain free. Her knees, a constant source of trouble dating back to high school, have held up all season.

It’s allowed Heide to blossom as an off-the-bench post and help end her career in the NCAA Tournament. Heide and No. 14 seeded Oregon State (19-15) take on No. 3 North Carolina (27-7) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in a first-round tournament game at Carmichael Arena.

For the first time in her five-year college career – three at California, two at Oregon State – Heide in every game for OSU this season. Averaging 7.4 points and 5.6 rebounds a game as a senior, Heide hit 6 of 9 shots and scored 12 points in the Beavers’ WCC tournament championship win over Portland in Las Vegas.

“Definitely my healthiest year so far, which has been a blessing,” Heide said. “Getting to be healthy means that I’m on the floor more, and that automatically is helpful for my confidence and my development.”

If the Tinkles are the first family of Oregon State basketball – men’s coach Wayne, wife Lisa and their three children all played college basketball – the Heides are 1A. Sela’s father, Jason, and mother, Sissel, played basketball for four years at Oregon State. Her younger brother Miles is a sophomore forward at San Diego State. Younger siblings Liam and Scarlet have basketball potential.

With basketball and size – Jason is 6-11, Sissel 6-4 – the sport seemed an obvious choice for the Heide children. Yet Sela Heide says each of their basketball paths “kind of happened accidentally.” Sela was into volleyball early in life, and for her brothers, football.

“My parents obviously wanted us to play basketball, but they also knew like, burnout happens. It’s really important for kids to play a lot of different things and try to see what you like and use your body in different ways,” Heide said.

There wasn’t the big 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 family basketball battles in the driveway that you might expect.

“We were all really supportive of each other. But we were all playing for different teams, and everybody has a practice at a different time. We weren’t home a lot. You eat a crockpot dinner at 9 p.m.,” Heide said.

As referenced earlier, injuries didn’t lead to a smooth path from Mount Si High to college basketball for Heide. While in high school, she dislocated her kneecap seven times, eventually leading to surgery and months of recovery. The other kneecap dislocated while at California, which wiped out most of her sophomore season.

Though Heide was mostly healed heading into her third year at California, it took time to adjust mentally. OSU coach Scott Rueck said it was a factor during Heide’s first season in Corvallis, the Beavers’ 2023-24 campaign.

“She was healthy, but she didn’t believe in her body yet. That’s a tough place to be, especially for a big, not to trust your knees … it’s a hard place to be when your mind is there instead of on the game,” Rueck said.

Rueck recruited Heide when she was in transfer portal, because “I saw potential from Day 1.” But last season, Rueck admits, was a struggle for Heide. There were flashes of brilliance; Rueck recalls stretches when Heide would give former Beaver Raegan Beers “a ton of trouble in practice.”

Whether it was time running out, or Heide trusting her health, she began to transform into a consistent presence last summer. During the second half of this season, Oregon State leaned hard on a person Rueck says “is a sweetheart of a human … maybe you’d say a big teddy bear.”

A big teddy bear who decided not to become a pushover.

“Down the stretch those who have been watching have seen a fierce competitor come out of her, someone that will fight for rebounds, fight for loose balls … she’s made such a massive difference in our evolution,” Rueck said.

Because of her injuries, Heide could potentially request a medical redshirt and play next season. But whenever Oregon State’s NCAA run is over, Heide says she’s done with college. If there’s more basketball ahead for her, it will take place as a professional.

“I’ve been in college long enough,” Heide said.

Heide said she really treasures spending the last five years of college with her mother watching. Sharing the WCC championship with her family “was special.”

Heide did something her parents didn’t experience at Oregon State, and that’s participate in an NCAA Tournament. Heide has done it twice, though she doesn’t bring it up around her parents.

“I keep it quiet until my mom starts bragging about her (high school) state championship. Then I’ll bring it out,” Heide said.”

    • I used to live next door to her dad, Jason, in the dorms freshman year. And then we lived near each other at the Park West apartments. It’s really cool to see his daughter living that same life all these years later

    FEEDBACK REQUEST
How do y’all feel about in-game situation/score updates here?
Please give thumbs up if you like them, down if you’d like to see less.
Asking because in the past some have relied on updates here to keep up with the games.

  85. As noted a very strange ending to the game. Beavs get luck on their side twice, helped by the umps.

Mundt gets the first two guys out. Next guy singles. Mundt gets to 0-2 vs Collins who then hits the next pitch over the left field fence. BUT the umpires stop the action. Umpires get together and the field ump had called a pitch clock violation. Cal Poly doesn’t argue the call. Batter works the count to 3-2 and Mundt gets another pitch clock violation! Tying run comes to the plate.

Last batter works the count to 3-2. Mundt Ks him but Weber can’t squeeze it and the ball rolls in front of the plate. Batter tries to run to first but collides with Weber coming out for the ball and kicks the ball away. Mundt goes after the ball and also kicks the ball away to the dugout. Umpire saves the Beavs by calling interference on the batter and game ends. Otherwise at least one run would have scored with the winning run coming up to bat.

This game represented a bit of what I posted earlier. Letting teams back into games that have no business being in the game. 6 walks and letting the tying run come to the plate in the last inning. Still looking for a guy who can slam the door in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings.

    • Dorman doesn’t change his approach for pitchers or who he recruits. if you throw over 94 he wants you. He doesn’t bother checking on a guy’s control.
It may be an analytics thing to prefer several potential Nolan Ryans over several potential Tom Glavines for the staff. Although at the college level, it might be better to hope for the Nolan Ryans but look at the potential Tom Glavines due to the exacting nature of baseball. Walks obviously aren’t a concern to Dorman or Canham though.

  86. Reagan Beers having a great game today but she looks like she’s added another 20-25 lbs to her frame. She has gotten huge!!!!

  87. WBB has started, if you are able to access the LiveStats let us all know the key. Eventhough it’s listed on the OSU site it is restricted by the NCAA for post season play, credentialed media members only. All about the $
Beavs down 1 about 5 minutes in.

  88. WBB down 15-9 after one. Feels like they are lucky to be down only six. Lots of turnovers and poor shooting to start the game.

  89. Well, the pace and score of the game at half favors the Beavs but Kelsey Rees is a mess offensively. AJ and Kennedie are having solid games but the Beavs need Bolden and Ferreira to pick it up. 9 turnovers is to many so keep it down to 6 or do in the second half and keep NC around 55-58 total points and the beavers have a shot at the upset.

  90. Down 2, 26-24 at the half, better than expected?
Both teams shooting in high 30%’s, Beavs lead Rebs 21-16
OK, nerves should be settled, time for Scott’s experience to make the difference.

    • I turned off right after that 3td 3 as I could see the collapse coming. I guess if you’re going to lose, losing big leaves no question marks as opposed to losing a close one

Dax spending time behind in the count, finishes the b3 at 55 pitches. Has given up 5 hits so far.
3 k’s, no bb or hbp.
    Beavs down 3-1.

  92. CP leaves their arm in with 80 pitchs vs Arquette who has already seen him twice, questionable decision.
Arquette hbp forces in run #4 to give Beavs a 4-3 lead. T4, two out.

Caraway then pops up, leaving bases loaded.
On to the b4, up 4-3

  93. Dorman pulls Dax with 76 pitches to start the b5. Can’t afford to use a lot of bullpen as Huskies are on sched for next Tuesday.
AJ Hutcheson comes on with a 4-3 lead gets an out and then gives up a double to Fenn who now has two 2b today.

  94. 3

Walk off HR gives CP the win, 7-6.
Biggest takeaway for me is Dorman pulling Hutcheson when he did and not pulling Edwards when he shouid have.

Win the games that are winnable and the ones you should win. That one was winnable, and one they should win.

The wheels aren’t falling off, but it isn’t a matter of “Oh well, that’s baseball.”

      • 3
        6

It’s baseball and anything can happen. If you win 100 games in the majors and lose 62, it’s an amazing season.

At 17-4 with 2 new starters, one being a freshman, new position players in every spot except catcher, LF and 3rd base, they are having an outstanding season.

Like I said, that’s baseball plain and simple. Heck, the
beavers could have easily lost the first game too but they
didn’t. You win some and you lose some. You can’t win them all even the ones you should win……just ask the Yankees about game 5, the 5th inning of the WS last year. That epitomizes how the fortunes of a baseball game can quickly turn against a team just like it did earlier today against the beavers.

Games like that you have to have a short memory bc it’s just 1 game out of 50+ games. Flush it and move on.

        • 3
          6

Postscript…..the #9 ranked Ducks got shutout today by a 10-13 Rutgers team. A game that pretty much everyone thought was a winnable game they should have won. Again, the unpredictability of baseball.

I won’t even mention the osu-Arky WS game in 2018 the Beavs had no business winning but did it in another example of how unpredictable baseball really is.

True and what is troubling is we have known this since last fall about this team. The coaches don’t seem to be concerned about the most obvious flaws of their approach, pitching staff or roster. There is a lot of talent on this team, but it is somewhat compartmentalized into specific categories, mixed with obvious flaws. Every team has flaws, but great coaching tends to mask the flaws with strategic and situational approaches that protect the players and limit failures. These guys tend to just play the percentages and analytics as a rule, letting the flaws be there and expecting the strengths to just simply overcome the flaws over time. On a macro-level, maybe that works, but on the minute by minute detail of baseball, they shoot themselves in the foot when it is totally avoidable with some awareness, emphasis, and planning. We know Mitch has traded the small ball/defense/pitching approach for homeruns, hard throwers and average defense. It is th eway of MLB and analytics to wait for the homerun and accept the strikeouts. Likewise, Dorman has constructed the staff to throw for strikeouts without concern for walks or hbp, giving every opponent free baserunners and eventually runs. Dorman leans on talented arms to just get more strikeouts to get out of jams and no one expects the defense to be stellar enough to make great plays anyway. Defense has been secondary to hitting ability, see Caraway vs Trosky over the last 2 years.
I guess we just need to accept the flaws as part of Mitch’s program mindset. The problem is it won’t lead to winning a super regional or CWS again. I don’t think the hitting will ever be good enough to overcome a really good super regional pitching staff. Supers will be Mitch’s ceiling. He won’t get to the CWS, and if he does, they will face tougher pitching, more disciplined hitting opponents and the same flaws will be magnified even more.

      • While I agree with all you’ve said, ohio, I do think we’ve seen more lately in the way of bunts and aggressive base running; also some nice defensive plays. Maybe just my orange tinted glasses.
        Consistency?…….there’s the rub.

  95. 3
    2

That it is why I have lost interest in baseball at the MLB level and losing interest in OSU baseball. Everything is analytics and they don’t stress the basic fundamentals of baseball, ie hitting with contact to avoid striking out, bunting, hit and runs, stressing defense and throwing strikes. Everything is a homerun or strikeout. Yawn. Watch the NHL and then turn over to baseball.

    • Is that you Goose Gossage?

It does kind of suck that parts of the game have been taking out due to the nerds. But the stats really don’t lie. Harder thrown pitches get more swings and misses resulting in more strikeouts. Harder hit balls result in more hits at every level so batters swing harder with less bat control.

      • Bill, don’t you think you can generate some runs when your bats are cold via small ball? The Cardinals under Whitey Herzog use to do that all the time with the speedsters they had. A guy would draw a walk, steal second, bunt him over to third the hit a sacrifice fly or maybe get a base hit. Hit and run also opens holes in the defense but you have to make contact. Strikeouts just kill you as there is no pressure on the defense to make a play.

        • 1
          1

In very specific situations like late game tie or one run situations, sure but over the course of the season, it would limit a team’s ability to score runs. MLB has tried to help revive these types of situations with larger bases, minimum batters needed to face by a reliever and limiting the number of times for pickoffs. I’d say the evolution of pitchers has greatly contributed to the decline of trying to manufacture a run.

What happens these days in the mlb, a guy draws a walk. Next guy wants to bunt him over, but the pitcher can throw sinkers, sliders all at 95+ for strikes or he throws a fastball at the top of the zone to induce a pop up. Bunting those pitches becomes very hard. Put on the hit and run? again, the variety of pitches available makes executing this play really hard. Say the runner does steal and is bunted over. The next batter will face all types of pitches to induce a groundball when he wants to lift it to the outfield. The odds are just stacked against those situations now.

Pitchers these days have quite an advantage. They have so much immediate quantifiable feedback on their pitches, they can really dial in their pitches or get rid of them if they don’t work. That’s why you see a lot of guys being able to add a new pitch in the offseason and it’s already a plus pitch for them when they throw it. Batters always having to keep adjusting

      • Really?!? You like the olympic size surface? The increased player speed has helped offset the neutral zone trap and low scoring games. I was hoping the NHL would go to the Olympic size rink a number of years ago to open the game up and add more scoring but don’t think they need to right now. Maybe in the future.

        • NCAA hockey in the 80s and 90s just spoiled me.

The NHL will never go to a bigger sheet, because the Canadians will never do it, unless it’s for the Olympics. Even their training facilities at those Olympics have always been NHL regs.

They are averse to the European style of play.

Canham might need to switch up the rotation to save some arms. Kleinschmit moves to Sat and Whitney to Sun. Saves the bullpen a bit as Kleinschmit is showing he can go deeper into games. No work on Keljo but would think Segura takes his spot if needed.

    • According to Parker during the broadcast, Keljo played catch before the game and wasn’t in any discomfort. So, we will see

Sanity has been restored as Beavs win 8-2. Now those that thought losing a single game in the last at bat was a major blow for the beavers, they recovered very nicely and now are 18-4. It would be great to be 19-3 but 18-4 is a very solid record.

    • 5
      6

Any program with CWS aspirations doesn’t say “that’s baseball for ya” after any loss. Especially blowing a 3 run lead in the 9th to a scrub WCC team. Give it a rest with the snarky tone.
The flaws are there for the Beavs. Don’t cover with obnoxious loser phrases. This team should mow through their schedule and rack up wins. In fact, they need to if they want to host a regional and possible super regional.
The margin for error is slim. The program reputation adds some advantage but not for long if they play sloppy and make excuses like “oh well, that’s baseball….” on a regular basis.

      • 5
        7

Sheesh, they had an 11 game winning streak broken. If you’re expecting them to win virtually every game, you might want to start following another sport. If a single loss is showing warts as you suggest, then exactly what is an 18-4 record showing?

Like any good baseball coach will say, baseball is unpredictable and any team cam win or lose on any given day. It’s not a loser mentality but it is realty especially if you under the game

Colorado St loses on a buzzer beater and an egregious swallowed whistle for an obvious travel on the buzzer beater. BIG10 and SEC seem to get a lot of calls and proper no calls when needed.

Sports betting and tv revenue steers the boat with a lot of this garbage. Refs have decided to never call travel or palming the ball so anything goes and the rulebook is old fashioned.
Iverson made palming the ball on a crossover acceptable.
Ginobli made the traveling Eurostar acceptable
Harden made the travel no step back 3 acceptable
All 3 elements have ruined the sport to some degree. Fundamentals are gone and refs have gone along with the degradation.

I want to see flagrant disregard for other empirical rules:

Step out of bounds with the ball or on the free throw line during a foul shot? No problem, you’re good.

Make a shot after the buzzer? Count it! You win!

Traveling, palming, and these unnecessarily physical fouls (“I was just playing basketball!”) all need to be called. Basketball can be a great game. But they won’t be called and the game continues to erode for the reasons provided above.

D1 baseball rankings shows that OSU’s series road win was worth moving the Beavs into the #5 spot. So it looks like D1 Baseball understands that an occasional loss preceded by an 11 game winning is just what happens bc it’s the nature of the game.

  101. “Back in 2022, I got an email from a guy I have known since third grade.

“I’m curious,” wrote Tyler Thompson, an Oregon State alum and Beaverton resident, “why UO has such a great plate while it appears the state just absolutely mailed it in on the OSU plate?”

    https://www.oregonlive.com/living/2025/03/beavers-rejoice-osu-finally-has-a-decent-license-plate.html

Black plate, white license letters and numerals, orange golf club Beaver head, “Oregon” at top, orange “The Beaver State” on bottom…

They should have had at least a choice of Benny Beaver…

    • But wait! There’s more!

“OSU Beaver plates cost an additional $40 to purchase the first time and with each renewal or replacement, in addition to regular registration renewal fees,” the agency said.

Net proceeds from the sale of the plates will “directly benefit Oregon State Athletics,” according to the press release.

“Your support will help maintain competitive success and scholastic excellence to not only support the holistic development of our student-athletes, but also bring joy to Beaver Nation,” said OSU’s director of marketing, Carson Dunlap, in a statement.”

  102. Oregon State is headed to the NCAA gymnastics championships as the No. 14 seed and competes in the Alabama Regional when competition begins April 4-6.

The Beavers seek their first NCAA team finals appearance since 2022, when they finished 12th. This year’s championship meet is April 17-19 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Also on the line is a gold medal for Oregon State senior Jade Carey, the five-time NCAA medalist who is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Oregon State is one of nine teams competing at the Alabama regional. Competing in the Beavers’ four-team pod are No. 3 Florida, North Carolina State and the winner of a play-in between Clemson and Rutgers. The other pod includes No. 6 California, No. 11 Alabama, North Carolina and Iowa.

Carey is seeking her first NCAA gold medal. She’s a four-time silver medalist, including last year in all around. This season, Carey ranks No. 1 in all around and balance beam, and seventh in vault and uneven bars.

Oregon State’s team season high is 197.700.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2025/03/where-is-oregon-state-jade-carey-headed-for-ncaa-gymnastics-championships.html

    • Oregon State has always been a “good” gymnastics school, and Carey is by far the most decorated gymnast the school has ever had, but I am surprised her coming here hasn’t elevated the program more. Is it just the SEC schools pay more?

  103. The talk about the “Maryland shuffle” got me thinking about the time Beaver Nation benefitted from a no-call. Stevie Jr. definitely shuffled/gathered for that game-winning three-pointer against the Huskies in ’16. Nothing new under the sun.

Juju Watkins done for the season with a torn ACL so it looks like TVO and USC are going to be hard pressed to win the NCAA tourney. The last thing I want to see is TVO play in the title game as she led the the charge last year to get players to transfer. Too bad about Juju but TVO can is a booger eater.

  105. Oregon State’s 2025-26 men’s basketball took a blow Tuesday when forward Michael Rataj entered the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-9 Rataj was an all-West Coast Conference first team forward this season, averaging 16.9 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. A source confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive that Rataj entered his name in the transfer portal.

Rataj is the second Oregon State player to enter the portal since it opened Monday, joining guard Da’John Craig.

  106. Why can’t we get rid of Tinkle? He can’t hold onto his players. Because they want to play for a winning coach.

    • 3
      2

Nice for Rataj to transfer before the post-season tournament that no one cares about. The clock is ticking for more to follow his lead. Tale as old as time. So who is next to transfer? I bet at least 4 more are gone within a week. Probably Lelevicious, Sy, Kingz and Lake all leave. Tinkle stinks and his players know it after a year around his lunacy on the sideline. Tinkle needs to be gone, no matter the buyout at this point. He is killing the men’s program and I wouldn’t blame any of these guys for leaving.
Can someone make a list of the guys who have transferred out over the last decade? He has to have a pretty high rate of starters departing since about 2015. So insane that Barnes keeps him around after another failure of a season. Any self respecting AD would embrace firing him after finishing 5th in the WCC!. Whatever cash is saved by keeping Tinkle is lost at the gate because no one shows up to watch since the entire fanbase is disgusted with this debacle.

Maybe hire Bobby Hurley for a short term redemption run and at least have some clownish behavior while the team implodes yearly. Tinkle just stands up and yells at his guys, pretending he is a coach in action. Hurley would be comedy gold and true short term entertainment as a competitive psycho on the bench. Tinkle doesn’t care anymore, he is coasting on his buyout without a care in the world.

        • 1
          1

Of course I’m not wanting to hire Bobby Hurley. But the consideration to hire him illustrates how terrible Tinkle has been and continues to be.
Hurley is an arrogant fool and has never been a likable guy even at Duke. Tinkle capitalizes on the likability factor in spite of being a horrible coach. He is more of a politician than coach at this point in his career.

          • Tbf, Hurley was likeable for a minute, after the crash.

He just couldn’t help but return to his old ways, instead of being humbled, as many of us would have been.

    • Day late and dollar short as the prior comments didn’t show up here until after I posted my comment. Regardless, not a total surprise although he didn’t really impress the last few games of the season… next?

      • I think Nate Kingz is next. I hate what college football and basketball have become, but it’s never going back. Rataj will get his bag.

        • 2
          2

Tinkle is such a bad coach that he didn’t even know which guys on his roster were the most likely to transfer due to their skillsets. His roster mismanagement is so bad that he basically identifies the guys with talent and who may elevate the program, and plays mental games with them once they show skill, and effectually guarantees they will leave at the end of the year.

    Beavs take care of UW.

UW is a bad team, they lost to Pacific Lutheran (a D3 school!) at home.

Caraway needs to really clean up his defense, cost the team a run. 2 errors in the same inning tonight for a team leading 7 errors. No one else has more than 2.

    • 1
      1

Caraway’s bat seemed to keep him in the lineup early in the season, even with his nice use of the 4 hole tonight, how long can his weak D be tolerated? With Trosky down, who ya move onto the field?

Yes, UW is a bad team, but………….they took 2 of 3 vs Nebraska, should be an indication of things to come this weekend.
Nebby also lost to Grand Canyon and the (new to the top 25 ) Anteaters early in Arizona.
Gonna be hard to accept less than a sweep this weekend.

        • 6
          1

Nope need to win all 3 versus Nebraska. Our SOS isn’t strong enough to loss to teams with 120+ RPIs and still get a national seed. We will be battling teams from the SEC with series wins over Oklahoma/Auburn and we dropped those games. I think it is very likely that we are ranked top 10 in all the polls, but are on the fridge of hosting a regional because metrics like RPI or Quad 1 wins won’t be as friendly to us as Pollster who apply the eye ball test. This team looks like a national seed, but committees like their metrics.

          • 2
            5

Actually, the Beavs SOS gets tougher down the stretch with 4 games with the backstabbing traitors, 4 games in Hawaii, 3 games at Iowa, a single game with UCLA…..all on the road except a single game at Goss vs the backstabbing traitors.

BTW, Nebby has an overall losing record but they did beat Vandy earlier this year. It’s s road series so anything can happen.

If Keljo is out with an injury, that will be a significant issue for the pitching rotation.

          • 2

I’d argue that the first 8 games in 10 days was the hardest part of the Beavs schedule, even if it is get tougher than it has been, it is still week compared to the ACC and SEC teams we will be competing against for hosting.

Both your posts @ 2:09 and 2:05 are spot on as far as I’m concerned; no way the lack of a sweep at Neb is just “ho-hum, it’s baseball”.

I’d love to see Santana out there. And if his bat is the question, utilize him in small ball, while the rest of the lineup whacks away.

HRs and RBIs are more abundant when the pitcher is in the stretch, and his focus is divided.

  108. 1
    1

For those interested, Nebraska is 127 in the RPI. This would qualify as a quad 2 series.

Looking through the Nebraska results. They lose games early on. Their main starters have combined for 2 wins and 9 losses. Have maybe three decent relievers but none look like they go more than an inning or two.

They don’t have a lineup that screams as formidable. Looks more like adequate. They would probably want to try to play small ball to scratch out runs and hope their pitching can pitch the games of their lives. Nebraska hasn’t won on the weekend since the opening week.

A series win is ok, but a sweep on the road goes a really long way. Get to their starters early and beat up on the bullpen.

The weather is nuts out there. Friday weather – High 82 degrees. Sunday – High of 48 degrees, low of 28. If I am Canham, I throw Dax on Sunday. His fastball in the cold would play up a lot. Be ringing everyone’s hands.

Speaking of a series on the road, road series vs nike and hawaii are the only ones left against teams with current RPI’s better than Nebraska. Gotta polish the resume whenever you can!

Iowa is over 140, CSUN over 180, and Fullerton over 150. Those won’t be as impressive as even Nebraska’s 127.

Oh, and if Nebraska plays small ball then Caraway’s defense could end up in the spotlight. Just sayin’

  109. Opening day in St Louis as they celebrate 1985 NL Pennant. That “small ball” team stole 312 bases!!! Man they were fun to watch!

      • Hahaha!!! I think Coleman had a third of the stolen bases. That guy had blazing speed. If he reached first, you might as well put on third as he was going get there stealing bases and or bunting him over. They were so good executing and putting pressure on the opposing D. Everyone knew what they were going to do, but couldn’t stop them.

  110. Fallah transferring. Eggers says OSu could have matched or come close to Rataj’s NIL money so it clearly isn’t about the money.

Maybe Tinkle will be so demoralized by the mass exodus that he’ll leave? He’s going to have to do what Rueck did next year in a much more competitive conference than Rueck is in.

    • All we have coming back are LL, Lake and Sy, plus all the bench guys. Pretty much have to replace the whole starting lineup.

That’s about 20 ppg returning. We returned less this year and had a pretty good season so that’s encouraging.

      • It’s interesting how most of the Power Conference teams selected the Fox tournament, but because of its start date, they are at the most risk for taking portal hits. What is the portal end date? If the Beavs had somehow won the WCC tournament and gone to the dance, would these players still have transferred? What a mess. I guess if Tinkle had wanted a cohesive lineup, he should have gone with the NIT, but then the team would have missed out on the NIL bling for the Crown tournament.

    • 3
      1

Not too pressed about Fallah leaving. Outside of his inside game he was soft as hell. Averaging 4 rebounds for a 6’9 260 lb big man is horrid

      • 5
        2

Not surprising at all. Tinkle prefers the storyline of a perpetual rebuild rather than stability. Now he can travel to Europe and Australia for recruiting trips, complain and whine about new guys needing to learn his system all over again, get a free pass for the first month of the season, lose winnnable games, win a game he shouldn’t and then still finish around .500 on the year. It is a nice gig if some school is foolish enough to keep paying him an outrageous amount of money for continued failure and mediocrity. I would be willing to do all of that for half the cost.

Don’t expect Sy or LL to stay. Any guy who plays decently at the Vegas tournament will simply be auditioning for the next school’s NIL offer.

Read an article about potential landing spots for Rataj and the Schmucks were listed as a potential spot. USC was another program too.

  112. Coach Slime joins Lanning pay territory. With a new pro league, there is so much incentive for players to annually change schools and coaches to stay at the college level:

“The new contract calls for him to be paid monthly at a $10 million annual rate this year and next year before increasing to $11 million in 2027 and $12 million in the final year of the deal in 2029.

It also increased what it would cost to buy out his contract if he voluntarily left Colorado before his contract expired. His previous contract would have cost him $8 million to buy out his contract in 2025 and $5 million in 2026. His new contract calls for him to pay Colorado $12 million to buy out his contract in 2025, $10 million in 2026, $6 million in 2027, $4 million in 2028 and $3 million in 2029.”

Also, read Kirby Smart complaining about NIL players not getting in shape and not committed to working hard. Apparently his early enrolling FR are disappointing him….terrible way to have to motivate them, try and shame them in the press.

Three innings in the books, 3-zip Nebraska lead.
    Segura: 56 pitches, 2 HR’s, 5 k’s, 1 bb, 1wp, 1hbp

Every statistical category side by side comparison was advantage in the beavers favor and Nebby is winning. How do you explain that other than that’s baseball.

        • 9
          1

That loss probably costs the Beavs a top 8 seed eventually. But “that’s baseball”? You can rationalize it away for a little bit. But this roster is supposed to be loaded with MLB talent.
“That’s baseball” feels like cover for poor execution and lack of attention to details over a large sample size. If the Beavs emphasized defense, details, execution with this roster and still had random losses against bad teams, then maybe it falls under “that’s baseball”.
College baseball has such discrepancies in roster and talent distribution that the Beavs should have expectations of Omaha, Hosting a Super regional and not stubbing the toe against mediocre WCC/Big10 teams multiple times.
It isn’t “that’s baseball” to have a bad loss with this roster playing this years schedule. It is a lack of focus, execution or complacency much more than “that’s baseball”.
I suspect if we were still playing in the old
PAC12 against those teams, these guys would either be much more focused or getting exposed as an undisciplined squad just interested in home runs. We will never know.

          • 5
            2

            Right on, ohio.

Said it before, “Seems the importance of a sweep is dependent upon ones aspirations for this team.”

“That’s baseball” works for those who, with this team and this schedule, will be pleased with traveling to a regional.

          • 4
            2

Yeah, this team is not playing very well right now and is over rated. Maybe the guys think they just need to show up because they are much more talented??? Top 10 teams will have a loss here and there but this team is not playing well in most areas. I think there normal starting pitchers have done well but not impressed with the rest.

    • Yeah me too! I was thinking about going to Des Moines in May but will be on vacation that weekend. It would have been fun to get together and drink a couple beers.

NE MO. I’m about 4 hrs to Des Moines. I’m in Omaha fairly often and am hopeful that our Beavs make it. Pat Casey would light a fire under his players getting the best out of them. I think Canham panders the players. Maybe its the time we live in with players bolting if they get their feelings hurt.

  115. 2

Very disappointing season so far as the the Beavs on the verge of winning only their 20rh win of the season with just a horrible 5 losses. I guess winning 80% of their games so far is just an epic failure. Beavs should probably just throw in the towel now.

    • 8
      1

20-5 is good for most teams and schools who are in a stable conference situation. OSU isn’t most schools and isn’t in a normal conference situation.

Your “that’s baseball” take wouldn’t work at Notre Dame in football and they wouldn’t tolerate losing games they should win as an independent. Since OSU is independent, the approach must be demanding perfection and a tactically effective approach that is more than waiting for a home run.
Mitch performs well against compared to an average standard, and “that’s baseball” will apply to those average schools. But OSU isn’t an average baseball school and your takes are ignoring the very real situation that we may not be an elite program much longer if Mitch and fans like you can’t see it.

      • 2
        3

Your expectations are very unrealistic. If you’re expecting perfection in any sport, you’re going to be disappointed a lot and winning 80% is not just good, it’s exceptional at any level whether you’re in an independent or a conference. The point is baseball is probably one of the most difficult sports to play and achieve success at any level Teams will have good days and they will have bad days expecting perfection is not only unrealistic but it’s impossible to achieve. As a fan, we shouldn’t live and die with each win or loss but just hope the baseball God’s are smiling down on the Beavs baseball team during the stretch run. After all, baseball is a marathon and not a sprint.

  116. Only 13-1 top of the 6th. The beavers are just pathetic. I still can’t believe they lost yesterday to Nebraska who also beat Vandy this year. I think they need to fire the entire coaching staff bc they obviously don’t have a clue about coaching a bunch of underachievers like this team!

  117. 1
    3

Only 8 hrs today and 16-3 so those warts are really showing today. The Beavs could score 20 today and get shutdown tomorrow. That’s how baseball goes.

  118. 7

    Baseball America top 10:
    SEC 7 teams
    ACC 2 teams
    OSU
    Next 10:
    SEC 4 teams
    ACC 3 teams
    Big West UC Irvine
    Big 10 Oregon
    Big 12 Arizona

In order for OSU to get a top 8 seed and super regional host site, they need to exceed the performance of at least every team from the west, Oregon, Irvine, Arizona and also have better numbers across the board than at least 12 out of 16 combined teams from the SEC/ACC. The Beavs need to be easiuly head and shoulders above the SEC/ACC teams in consideration for hosting regionals and set themselves apart as a givien to have a top 8 seed. Given the recent trend toward a strong bias for SEC as host sites, this means the margin for error for OSU to host a super regional is extremely tenuous. They are not going to get the benefit of the doubt from east coast and ESPN bracket organizers because it has already been shown that the brackets will be skewed to benefit the SEC and ACC for baseball host sites for at least 6 years now.

Tenn, Ark, Georgia all have 2 losses entering the weekend.
Texas, Clemson, Florida St, Oklahoma, Alabama all had 3 losses entering the weekend

So there are already 8 teams with better records and the accepted narrative of tougher schedules than OSU. This is the key for why my insistence to strive for perfection is pertinent. The Beavs don’t have a strong conference to fall back on with some losses simply explained away. All other teams will be able to hide a bad loss within the “strong conference ” narrative because ESPN wants that narrative. OSU will be the outcast among the preferred and OSU will need to crash the party with excellence not a lame form of a roller coaster good/great/eh that’s baseball mixture of a record.
I think even 8 losses out of this schedule will easily disqualify them from a top 8 seed. The arguments won’t be there to justify keeping them ahead of LSU, or Texas, or Florida and eventually the Beavs will get sent to an SEC site as a 2 seed again. They will struggle against good/great pitching because they can’t produce runs and decide to wait for the home-run to keep them in it. Rinse/repeat since Mitch took the job.
My contention about OSU just waiting for a 3 run homer isn’t a revelation or a guess, it is how Mitch has been recruiting and building the roster for several years. We know the approach is flawed and the offense isn’t capable of overcoming good/great pitching. The only advantage would be home field against great pitching but that margin is very thin. OSU already has 5 losses and a couple of them are going to be shown as really bad losses. “That’s baseball” or not, it will affect the seeding and national perspective once the record is scrutinized against SEC teams who could host. ESPN doesn’t mind the blatant conflict of interest to push the SEC as host sites because it makes for better tv, while owning the contract for promoting the SEC at the same time. ESPN is the problem and any hurdle for OSU will be amplified in order for ESpN to have another SEC team host instead of OSU. This is where I fully reject the “that’s baseball” mantra of ESPNsucks. He can’t see the inevitable repercussions of taking a bad loss in mid-March becoming the difference in eventual post-season opportunities. Don’t simply argue about the 3 game series and make snarky comments about home-runs in a bounce back game. Who cares at this point about 8 home-runs? The damage has already been done by the first game loss. If the Beavs can’t beat a bad Neberaska team on the road in March, then they won’t beat any SEC on the road in May/June either.
I want the Beavs to be successful in the post-season, but the flaws are evident and the staff doesn’t mind the flaws since they are running an analytics factory built to get guys drafted instead of a baseball program built to win.

    • Good stuff, ohio, a lot of logical ground covered there.
I note that LSU also has only 3 losses, making even more competition for the top 8 spots.
The lack of a conference not only prevents the hiding of a “good loss”, it means there is no conference rep to lobby for the Beavs.
(although that isn’t always a given……..lookin’ at you, Meggs).

      • This. At the moment the Beavs are 4-3 in quad 1 games and 2-2 quad 2. They have not losses vs quad 3 or 4 teams. That may change as teams move up and down based on RPI. Looking at you Xavier. Currently at an RPI of 13 with a 14-14 record due to having the toughest schedule in the country.

Beavs need have work to do and cannot lose this series tomorrow.

UCI at home will be a good litmus test. They also have games vs UCLA, 4 vs Oregon and a handful of others against current quad 1 opponents. Don’t lose the games you shouldn’t and be above .500 vs quad 1 teams at the end of the year.

One other item to note…..there is no postseason conference tournament this year. Or next. Beavs will have almost 3 weeks off before a regional starts.

The last game is on May 17. Regionals won’t start until the first weekend in June. That is a long ass layoff without playing a game. Then they immediately go into playing meaningful games.

I will not be confident about winning any regional.

They should’ve partnered up with the Big West for 2 years instead of trying this independent bullshit.

Oregon’s bullpen, its undoing in the postseason for several years, melted down in both ends of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Ohio State — the worst Power Four baseball team in the country this season.

The No. 10 Ducks blew a four-run lead in the final three innings, falling 11-10 to open Saturday. Then a four-run eighth inning sent the last-pace Buckeyes to an 8-6 win to cap the afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus.

Proves my point about how unpredictable baseball really is. That in a nutshell is baseball regardless of whether or not some so called experts are willing to accept this reality. On any given day, any team cam win and any team can lose. No team is immune to this fact including the Beavs. So expecting perfection and winning games they are “supposed to win,” is just unrealistic and lacks understanding about how difficult baseball really is and that these are humans playing it and not robots.

Relief pitching implodes in the bottom of 7th. Mundt stunk after getting the first two batters and then inexplicably walks the next batter and hits the following two. Then, Zach Edwards puts out the fire with gasoline and gives up another 5 runs before getting yanked. I quite listening at that point. What a shitshow….

Now it’s 13-7 as Nebraska has scored 7 runs with 2 outs in the b7. Wow, how often do you see that happen? Not often bc that’s how unpredictable baseball really is

  124. This team is opposite of being clutch. They choked so badly in this series against a really bad Nebraska team! They don’t deserve to host a regional or be a Top 25 team at this point. They just don’t have what it takes, especially in pitching and defense.

Wow, 16-7 after thumping Nebraska 16-5, who’d thunk it after yesterday’s game? Actually, on an earlier post I said as unpredictable baseball is, the Beavs could get shutdown today and they did.

That is baseball. Finally, you’ve figured it out. 9 run explosion with 2 outs b7…….that certainly happens a lot. Loler

      But but but….

      That’s baseball (dripping with sarcasm)

This team has serious warts. Regional is their ceiling imo

As pointed out above, hitting is feast or famine.

      Pitching is average at best.

      • Have not followed these guys that close but national media pre-season was saying this team was loaded with talent. Is the talent over rated or is it the inability of the coaching staff to develop it?

        • No, that talent is there but they lost a starter before the season started, Morrell a reliever went down with a season ending injury, Trosky hasn’t played this season due to an injury and now nelson Keljo has some precautionary thing going that caused him to miss his start vs Nebraska.

Combine all of these issues with virtually a new infield and new outfield, and the Beavs are really a new team from last year.

I think TBazzs absence from the lineup proves how the Beavs miss his spark plug approach.

The Beavs will be there at the end of the season but will need to catch fire at the right time.

I think Mitch needs to be on the hot seat after this season if they don’t make a decent playoff run. His teams have been shown time and time again to be the opposite of clutch, from blowing massive leads in PAC 12 tourney games and coming in 2nd place in the PAC 12 regular season three years in row due to inexplicable losses, to games like the one today, which have become more common while on the road. He has shown that he’s not up to Oregon State Baseball standards.

I don’t think there can be any doubt now that we’ve been overrated this year. This is not a top 10 team. We’re benefiting from something that many other teams benefit from in other sports. Name recognition. We’re stilling benefiting from the reputation built during the Casey years.

How much do we all think we’d need to offer to bring Casey out of retirement? He still lives in Corvallis, and he’s only 66 years old….

No chance Barnes lets Mitch go. This is an AD that has let the mens basketball program drop off into irrelevance by keeping Tinks.

At least Tinkle has a conference tournament title and elite 8 appearance to point to, which I guess could be equated to an Omaha appearance as they are both the final 8 teams. Mitch hasn’t won anything of note in his 6 seasons thus far.

What’s with all the batter-hitting? Are they trying some Dorman technique and not succeeding? Or is it Dorman who isn’t succeeding??

Most boring ncaa tournament ever. Very few upsets and all 4 number 1 seeds make the final four.

The powers that be got what they wanted

I don’t consider these reactions to be overreactions for a team with pre-season Omaha expectations. Getting blown out twice by a poor B10 team is not something to just shrug off. And it’s not just this weekend. It’s a pattern at this point with our pitching especially. We have a very easy schedule this season and can’t be losing series to the likes of Nebraska.

Time for Canham to take the team bowling…..

Sometimes hard to believe the HC was a catcher for a Casey championship squad. It’s like he’s thrown all that out for what he learned in the pros.

    • So many coaches let their egos override their brains. Canham wants to do it his way, not his former coach’s way, even though that way won 3 championships. Maybe he’ll figure it out if he’s not successful again this year, then again, maybe not.

    • Yep all true. Mitch wants to be a players friend instead of a demanding leader. It isn’t easy to be a coach in the “Casey” style.
Also, as a players coach, Mitch is captive to stay lines and pro style analytics to get guys a look at the big leagues. No doubt it is part of the recruiting pitch.
He isn’t as interested in defensive prowess, or contact hitting, or control pitchers. His preference in recruiting leans towards hard throwers and home runs.

      • Things aren’t the same as when Casey was coaching. If you’re too hard on a player bye bye they can jump ship to another program. I don’t know how long Dorman will be around but that’s a change that has to be looked into.

I think we are seeing the circling of tbe drain.

Beavs are drowning into.just a run of the mill regional team from being a national power.

    Sucks, but its reality.

    Ask yourselves this…..

Does this look like a power conference or a joke? Because as of right now? That’s our conference brethren in 2027.

    OSU
    WSU
    Fresno St
    Gonzaga
    San Diego St

Can that compete with the SEC???

  132. 12
    2

    Here is our reality:
SEC is running over all other conferences in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and softball.
The outliers at this point are Boise St in football, Gonzaga in basketball, and Oregon State in baseball.
All other sports are reduced to SEC being chipped at by ACC or Big10 in one sport or the other.
OSU is in deep trouble if Canham doesn’t make a run this year to Omaha. We are in the twilight days of the fading glory of Casey.
It is a stacked deck and some clowns are satisfied with “that’s baseball” being an explanation while we watch the shifting landscape swallow up OSU sports into an afterthought.

Looks like former Beaver Times Gardiner was 5/8 from three in helping UCLA defeat LSU and their annoying crazy coach… first time UCLA WBB has made it to final 4(?).

    • This is only year 43 for NCAA women’s hoops.

They did win the AIAW Championship a few years before that. But the NCAA did to that league what they did to the NIT, by simply sanctioning the sport and a Tournament.

The Beavs were in the second Sweet 16, in 1983.
