Home Football Fresno State @ Oregon State

Fresno State @ Oregon State

443

This will act as both the game week thread, and the game day thread.

As I was saying in the prior thread, I think these teams are equal in terms of prestige, but Fresno State has had more years to mine this type of B list talent that the new Pac will be able to land. So, they’re probably the superior program at this point. Thinking we would beat Cal was laughable given the talent gap between their conference an ours and also our coach and theirs? Seemed like easy money with that line.

No line this morning for the game, but I’m thinking something ugly.

Fresno State 45, Oregon State 21.

        Fuck that absolute shitty noise.

I’d rather hire Mark Banker as our head coach and stay a Beav fan. I would rather give Wayne Tinkle a lifetime contract and be forced to sit at each game and watch them, than be a Duck fan. Arsenic is a better alternative.

      • Yeah well, about that. Anybody questioning the sanity of continuing to schedule a game with that team other than for the sake of ‘just beacuse’?

        • 5
          2

At this point scheduling Oregon is win/win for UO. They get an easy win with little travel and don’t get the PR hit for destroying the rivalry.

Unfortunately Barnes is too stupid to recognize how easy it would be to turn not playing into a PR loss for UO and therefore a PR win for OSU.

After last night I don’t really expect any wins at this point. The offense looked Andersen level bad and the defense let an 18 year old light them up.

They need a coaching staff with a clear vision of what success in Corvallis can be, this staff is grasping at straws.

          • Okay, I stand by every word. Last night was embarrassing for the first time since Andersen.
That was unwatchable football. Calling it football is an insult to football.

  1. I dont currently have enough wifi juice to find video, but what’s this I keep reading about Murphy yelling at Langsdorf?
    What did Danny do?

  2. Given the death of NCAA sports, and decreasing product quality, how lunch longer will you keep this site going Angry?

I thought the transition period might have som interest, but it’s pretty much morbid interest.

It’s not just the football team loving, it’s the poor coaching, apparent lack of learning by the coaches, and lack of over quality. A return to rationalization and acceptance of losing by the AD, coaches, and many players, will not be interesting.

      3

The total decline of NCAA sports could be interesting to document, too, and I’m down with doing that. I actually think Oregon and Phil Knight’s obsession with buying rather than earning a championship is hugely responsible for that.

  3. 14

College is almost a better deal than NFL for the players now. Contracts are guaranteed and you’re a free agent every year if you want to find a higher paying gig. There’s really no incentive to stick with a team unless they can consistently afford to overpay. The cream will rise to the top even more rapidly than in past years.
Let’s face it, the cash poor teams like the Beavs have no chance to compete, and the media money discrepancy between G5 and P4 teams only widens the gap.

There wasn’t a talent gap between is and Cal. Don’t be silly.

We spent the first quarter running around like chickens with our heads cut off, and the whole game on offense was some weird pass-happy plan that played Cal even for three quarters, despite looking like a heaping pile of shit and making mistake after mistake.

No idea if the coaches have learned anything from it, given they played to none of our strengths last night to start with. But that loss wasn’t due to talent.

    • 6
      4

What are you talking about? The talent gap was clearly evident; the physical nature of Cal’s O-Line and D-Line was much more than what the Beavs brought to the table – they outweighed and pushed us around all night. Their QB torched our D backfield consistently; and this was a freshman with no D-1 game experience – we made him look like a Heisman contender. Cal has the benefit of playing in a Power 5 Conference and knows what to expect from the competition they will be facing – the Beavs have been subjected to being a middle of the road MWC team and play to that level. That Beaver squad was no way prepared to play that game last night.

Did our coaches learn anything? I’d be surprised if they did.

      • 8
        2

They weren’t. Not sure what you were watching, but we never even tested their d-line. We just called pass after pass after pass, followed by the occasional telegraphed stretch handoff. It was clearly a coaching gap. We played them pretty even, once our D finished the first quarter Chinese fire drill.

And let’s not pretend the refs were anywhere near competent. They called a bunch of head-scratchers… and no-called a bunch, as well.

I will give credit to their QB. He did look really comfortable as a frosh. He wasn’t as good as the gushing announcers on TV called him during the game, but he made some good plays and his footwork put him in good spots to make those plays. And Uluave was good, though, I couldn’t tell if it was because he was the next Seau or if we just never bothered to mark him.

  5. There wasn’t a player quality gap, it was a quality chasm about the size of the Grand Canyon. Same for the coaching. When money becomes an issue, it quickly becomes the only issue. In the new D-1 reality, talent isn’t recruited or coached or found. It is bought. He who has the most money wins. Find a huge “sugar daddy” or get used to 4-8 seasons. It’s that simple.

    • 7
      2

Cal has less money than we do.

There wasn’t a talent gap. That shit show was all coaching. Hatcher and Allah had almost as many catches as they had runs, and Murphy ran it as many times as the two of them touched the ball, most of the time because a pass play broke down.

When your leading rusher only attempts 15 carries, that should mean your second guy is also getting double digit touches. Otherwise, you can expect thei d-line to just pin their ears back and stay fresh all game long.

      • 4
        1

I do think there’s a talent gap but it’s not yet as wide as it will become over the next few years when we truly hit that mid G5 team status. Their OL and DL were far better than ours. Murphy is legit as big as some of our OL guys. We had 4 TFL and 0 sacks. We only pressured their QB twice that game and he easily avoided the 2 sack opportunities we had. When your safties hold the top 2 tacklers for the game and 3 of the top 5, thats not good especially when its not an air raid offense. DL and LBs aren’t getting of blocks. Believe at 1 point into the 3rd qtr they were averaging 13 yds a play. Lol.

Our OL couldn’t move theirs off the line of scrimmage. 0 run room for our RBs and Murphy had guys in his face or laying hits on many of his pass attempts. The TE room is garbage and was touted as being one of the deepest we’ve had in years. Caufield had 2 catches for 9 yds and a lost fumble. The former 4 star recruits we brought in at TE mightve not seen the field and if they did, definitely were a non-factor in pass or run-pro.

This is a bad team with some really bad coaching schemes and decisions.

        • I think we’ve already hit that mid G5 status. It happened when Smith bolted and everybody transferred out, only to be replaced by mid talent and an expensive yet unproven QB

        • Our LBs were getting through gaps easily. The issue was they were the wrong gaps, because they kept committing way too early.

You and I could have played better covering those holes, simply because we’re too slow to commit as quickly as they did, and we’d at least act as speed bumps.

Reality Sunday is kind of brutal. It really is about the Jimmys and Joes. Beavs have 11 players 300 lbs and above, Cal has 23. That stuff makes a difference. Extrapolate that out to height, speed, etc .throughout all of the position groups and Nick Saban, Bill Walsh’s ghost and Buddy Ryan couldn’t put together a game plan or find plays that would make up that kind of gap.

    • Yep and then theres still people that want to continue playing Civil War and so on. If this is what we’re dealing with just 2 years removed, what’s another 2, 3, 4 years look like? Not pretty. We’ll be the body bag early season tune-up team for P4 squads and then we need to schedule some FCS stuff for ourselves or we’ll be lucky to hit 6/7 win seasons. Based on the shit we saw last night and the coaching decisions that went along with it, this is a mid P12 team. They can clean up the sloppy play but we can’t overcome the bad offensive scheme and stupid coaching decisions. Those have cost us numerous games during the Snake era and last year and apparently carrying right on into this year.

  7. The talent gap with the P4 seems to be mostly along the lines because there’s just not as many of these body-types walking around – plus you need more of them. There are enough talented 180 to 230 lb players available to filter down to our level, but by the time the big schools get done fighting over the 300 lb guys, there is not a lot of talent left.

  8. Did Exodus Ayers even play? He was listed as a starter on the depth chart, but I only recall seeing Tucker, Glasper, Vadrawale, and Ivy at CB. Was he benched because of the video that went somewhat viral? I’m surprised at the lack of rotation at RB, and thought Allah and Crosby would get more snaps. Also was expecting Riley Williams to be much more of a factor at TE than he was. I thought he would be Murphy’s go-to safety blanket target.

I’ve been hearing the excuses about the lack of linemen for 25 years as a Beaver fan. Of course it comes down to the oline and dline. It always has and always will, if you aren’t innovative or forward thinking.
OSU has a strong tie to polynesian culture and hasn’t really been able to build off of it for the linemen. WSU, Utah, Boise St and Oregon all have been able to bring those guys into their programs. But OSU just continues to hand-wring about “not enough of those guys available”.

For once I would like to see an actual commitment to being an innovative football program. So many great ideas have been proposed here for OSU, but we are consistently stuck in another version of Riley pro-style offense that flops.
It was easy to predict the offense would look like a lame version of Riley 2.0, as soon as Langsdorf was brought in. Such a loser decision to go back to Riley’s staff for any kind of help.
My greatest day as a Beaver fan was the day Riley left for Nebraska. But here we are a decade later and his guys are trickling back into Valley because the program is on its deathbed essentially, and they are milking the last few paychecks out of it before they retire. But that is going backwards in a time when OSU can’t afford to go backwards.
OSU needs to have a clear vision of how to rise out of this situation through football success mainly, and other sports as a residual. The path forward will never be retreads from early 2000s Riley staffs.

The Beavs would be way better off trying to find an OC from the Leach/Peterson coaching tree instead of Riley’s guys.

I’d actually throw money at Bryan Harsin after last night and bring him in as the head coach. It would be a nice story and he would see the opportunity for next season and the playoffs. It is pretty predictable that OSU admin/AD will wait too long, hesitate to act and in another 2-3 years, the major damage will already be done and OSU will be a bottom feeder in its own rebuilt conference.

Reactionary Sunday leaves me feeling like it may be over sooner rather than later. Sure Jack debates the talent, everyone sees the coaching deficit.
We all know the real issue is money and NIL, and sadly, we know deep down that OSU will never really compete at the same level with the USC, Ohio St, Texas, Oregon, or even programs like Cal, Utah, UW again. We know it would take something that OSU has never really had, desire to win, a broad base deep pocket alumni base willing and ready to spend for it to happen. This is a foreign thing for OSU. The boomer alumni base was used to losing and never experienced what a winning culture meant to a campus or institution. Now OSU is reaping the fruits of that era because they put thousands of students through the school and very few have any concept of what a successful sports program requires.

    • The problem with the line size has more to do with where the Beavs are in the food chain. In the past they could take an underrecruited kid in high school, add 30 pounds onto him over two or three years and develop him, and he’d be a functional Pac-12 lineman. Now, the kid is hitting the portal after two years once he’s big enough.
I have no problem with the Portal or NIL, but together they are really hurting the sport. One free transfer from a D1 to another D1. One. Another when you graduate if you still have eligibility. And these NIL deals have to be public.

  10. 11

really not trying to over-exaggerate, but i’ve been watching for 20 years at this point and think that may have been the worst coaching performance i’ve ever seen. it was shocking to see how unprepared they were from the leadership side. multiple unforced errors, almost every special teams possession having an issue, baffling decisions with the 2 point conversions that take away all momentum. the inability to read the room and play with any kind of tempo to get something going. punting down two scores with 5 min left? these guys are minor leagues and honestly don’t think any of them would be on staff at a major school.

    • 20? I’ve got 40+ and that just includes from a student to alum and doesn’t include the ’60’s when I was a kid, when I wasn’t even aware of the Beavers and football in general. Just always wondered why Dad was mostly frustrated on Saturday’s while listening to the game on his transistor radio out in the garage…One thing that may be an issue going forward is that Murphay is an ‘air raid’ QB and we run a pro-set offense. He knew that coming in and must be frustrating as **** to not be able to use his talent for the offense he knows best how to operate in. I think this was a bad fit for both him and us….

  11. Geez, the local and even some of the national media must not know shit about D-1 college football. I fell for the pre-season hype that they were drastically improved. I’m trying to think where I saw even a glimpse of progress, maybe the new kicker making the long field goal?

Oregon State’s coaching staff used the management technique of MBWWH. That is, Management By Wondering What Happened. Clueless from the get go.

  13. Self imposed death penalty? I didn’t even watch the game but recorded it because I was at a concert.. I guess there is no need to play it back because by the sounds of it, the beavers are just bad.

I posted comments about the FR QB and the Cal defense a few days before the game and those comments were apparently consistent with what I heard on the podcast with Dirt and Sprague. Their FR QB sounds like a phenom and their defense sounded like they were every bit as good as advertised.

I checked out the final stats and they were surprisingly close so I’m not sure what to make of the Beavs or Cal for that matter.

The duck game in three weeks sure looks like a barn burner now with the farm boys getting torched to the tune of 69-7!

    • At 1 point he was 9/9, 125+ yds and 2 tds. Lol. He was good. We had 0 pressure. Dude could’ve prepped a 5 course meal back there. Our OL was pretty bad unfortunately. The most glaring issues were coaching blunders. Special Teams penalties and personnel issues. Gundy is clueless as fuck. Completely odd 2 pt conversion try that made 0 sense. Punting when down 2 scores with 5 min left. Bad clock management. It was really just an all around bad showing by the beavs. Really bad

  14. The Beavs are now 1-8 over their last nine games. They may not be quite as talent-less as some of GA’s worst teams, but that’s a GA win/loss record for sure. I’m sort of numb at how quickly things turned for the worse. If this is another lost season, I would like to see a clean break from the “Riley Tree” once and for all.

  15. Just ran into Mike Parker outside of California Pizza Kitchen at Bridgeport Village in Tigard. As he and I crossed paths, I said Go Beavs and he stopped and asked if I was at the game and I told him I was at the concert at Clark county amphitheatre. He asked who played and told him it was Christopher Cross, Men at Work and Toto. He was like all three at the same concert? I said yep and around 17k in attendance. Anyway, I told him tough night for the Beavs and he agreed but said I think we will be okay. …I said I hope so. We shook hands and he went his way. A very nice guy who looks like he is still struggling with his hip replacement.

It’s copium. The issues with this team run much deeper than some player miscues. Gundy is to Bray as Tibesar was to Snake Smith. If he can’t move on from Gundy, it doesn’t matter how good he can get the defense to play. That anemic office won’t do shit.

  16. Not much else to day than just a really awful coaching performance by the whole staff.

Felt palpable anger for the players on their behalf leaving Reser, the roster isn’t nearly as bad as they played, totally capable of beating CAL, completely let down by the staff.

I don’t know if it’s primarily an inter-staff issue, if Bray has an approach on Offense he’s wanting Gundy/Langs to implement, or if Gundy/Langs are working without proper direction to pursue any kind of offensive identity.

But from a leadership standpoint, Bray’s gonna need to figure out how to step up and get what he needs from that side of the ball from his coaches.

It’s possible Bray just doesn’t have the attributes to be a HC. Is what it is.

They simply weren’t ready to play and all the confidence seen at practice in camp was out the window.

Rewatching the film, the D responded reasonably well even though they are still missing the talent they’d need to compete at the Power level up front.

Silver linings: Nikko Taylor. The freshman CB is a stud. Trent Walker is Trent Walker. The kicker seems good.

I do think they can recover enough and put together enough to get an ugly win against Fresno, but it’s close, 34-31ish.

If Fresno dominates I don’t know how they’ll keep the locker room.

    • 3
      1

I don’t see this offense scoring 34 pts. We move way too slowly for that to happen. Not to mention it doesn’t seem like we know what offense to run to even score. Maybe Fresno will be that bad.

      • Understand. I know they can do it, not saying they will.

If Gundy would get out of his own damn way (or whatever is going on there), it’s entirely possible. They have talent.

        • 4
          1

I think it’s also a coaching issue. I watched two series and went to bed not wanting to stay up and watch that garbage. It’s amazing how you bring in a new coaching staff that is competent that turns around programs with similar talent the previous coaching staff had. Look at Indiana. Look at the job Matt Campbell has done at Iowa State. Hell, look what Dennis Erickson did hear. I’m a big proponent of throwing the ball as a number of you know, but you also have to have some balance and compitent OC who is calling plays.

  17. 3
    1

I’ve read some interesting proposals throughout the thread so far:
    Fire the whole staff
    Hire Banker as head coach
Institutional self-imposed death penalty for football
    Hiring Jimbo Fisher
Beavs fans just going over to the darkside and rooting for the Ducks

We are in no man’s land as a program, and will continue ot be even after the PAC12 starts up again. Barnes isn’t steering the ship well through the storm as far as on field product is concerned and that will be amplified once the Beavs get destroyed by 4/6 new schools.
We thought Gundy was going to take an FCS qb, McCoy, and make hime great in a zone-read system, major fail. We thought Gundy was going to take a 5* experience P4 qb, Murphy, and lift the whole offense around him, also a major fail.
My guess is that Bray has made a major error. He knew he needed to take over DC in order to make that side better, which will happen. But in order to do that, he has added Langsdorf/Cavanaugh as the experienced brain trust in the offensive room with Gundy, and Bray stepped away from that group maybe more than we know. My guess is Bray was shocked at how bad the offense looked. But the dye has been cast, and MM is already frustrated with Langsdorf. Of course the point of MM being an “air raid qb” rather than a “pro-style qb” is rrelevant and on-point. Langsdorf only knows his own bag of plays and likely has no interest in shifting to accommodate MM. Gundy is not the OC, Langsdorf is the shadow OC to help Gundy without the pressure or controversy of being the OC again. This will fail horribly. The team leader is MM, Langsdorf has been exposed, Gundy wasn’t ready and isn’t capable to call the plays and Bray is now stuck with divided attentions again.
And that doesn’t even address the special teams coach. Who is it and why hasn’t he been jettisoned already?

List of plays of the top of my head that were debacles:
1st series on defense-5 yard penalty as Cal was punting
1st play on offense- bad snap, lose yards
    TE fumble after catch
Int almost became a pick6 for Cal
Beaver social media can’t type TFL correctly
    No sacks for OSU dline/lbs
Murphy and Langsdorf yelling at each other on the sidelines
OSU fans walking out of the stadium thinking here we go again…

The social media stuff only shows me that we have a broader issue of institutional meltdown, and lack of awareness, lack of excellence when it comes to OSU sports.
Nonetheless, I think Bryan Harsin may be the best option, or Jimbo Fisher. Both guys have been in the pressure cooker of the deep south, have been paid handsomely to leave the jobs, and are looking for another shot. OSU has a head coach who didn’t want the job and a staff that isn’t capable or equipped to do their jobs. S naturally Barnes won’t do anything, and both of those coaches will probably be hired by other schools in the new PAC12.

    • Bray needs to dismiss Gundy the way Smith FINALLY dismissed Tisebar. The question I have is who most named “Langsdorf” can replace him?

It would send a message that incompetence will not be tolerated, and probably both shock and inspire the team the way Tisebsr’s dismissal did.

Funny, Angry suggested years ago that perhaps the Air Raid was a good option for the Beavs to be able to leverage the talent and position groups they can typically recruit…plus it’s simple and can be picked up quickly by players.

      • I would love for Beavs to adopt the Air Raid. We don’t have the horses to be like an Alabama, Texas or Ohio State. Obviously need a qb. Would be easy to recruit receivers. “Hey son, do you want to catch 120 balls and score a dozen touchdowns!”

    • I say bring in a big name coach like Jimbo Fisher who should be able to get “the band” back togethet attracting coaches who know what they are doing. It would be nice to get a Pacific Northwest guy who sees what OSU has to offer but options might be few. You bring in a Jimbo Fisher and his cache’ should also help attract recruits.

  18. I’ll say this in Bray’s favor. Regarding the pivotal play of the game (the penalty on Cal’s punt after their first possession), he mentioned in his post game press conference that it wasn’t the player’s fault. That can only mean that he knows it was a coach’s fault; probably the special team coach. And please, someone, identify who the special team coach is, please.

    • Bray knows that was a coaching failure, now what will/can he do about it?
A quick scan of the roster of coaches shows Jamie Christian as special teams coordinator and, get this, Daniel Akey as sptm quality control. Yup, must be related to Special Assistant To The Head Coach, Robb Akey.
      Nepotism strikes again!
I have no confidence that young Daniel will be shown the door.

I don’t think this team’s talent is the biggest problem. Wilcox is a seasoned vet. Good coach and staff. Cal was ready to play. Beavs were not and the coaching repeatedly cost this team momentum and points. ST penalty led to 7 points for Cal plus eliminating great field position and scoring opportunity for Beavs. Get an early lead and who knows how the game ends up. That said, given the play calling, scheme, lack of in game adjustments, clock management, decision to go for 2, punting with 5 minutes to go on 4th and 6, etc. this team won’t win no matter how great the talent is. The coaching is that bad. Gundy is crap but Bray and the defense, outside of special teams, was the primary issue in this game. To me, that was the most concerning takeaway. We’re fucked

    • “…but Bray and the defense…was the primary issue in this game.”
Can’t agree with that take. Defense has to be down the list of problems; behind SpTms and lack of creative offensive play calling.

      • Well the D got steamrolled early and Bray made several incredibly bone headed decisions. Defensive scheme was beyond bad in first half. Watch the replay. They were rushing 3 half the time. Cal QB had zero pressure. Not the way you get to a freshman QB

    • Wilcox has been there several years, providing stability, but he has never won any special bowl game has he?

Good thing Jayden Ott was no longer on their roster….

  20. 2
    1

Eggers reports Bray’s answer to why try 2 pt conversion…….hint: it doesn’t give any confidence at all in Bray’s feel for the situation or, actually, common sense!
“That’s going on analytics — when you have to go for two and when you don’t,” Bray said when I asked him afterward. “It was called for.”

    “It was called for”??

  21. 8
    3

I’m going to make this as simple as I can without all of the lengthy narrative:

1). Beavers in the deficit on the NIL and portal
2). Beavers in the deficit in their offensive philosophy as the pro style offense in antiquated. I can’t think of another program that runs this offense. Even if you have the horses, what kid wants play in it. I’m not even sure if any NFL teams run it.
    3) Beavers in the deficit bc they’re a G5 program. Generally, G5 attracts kids not skilled enough to play at P4 level
    4) Beavers in a small market that doesn’t move the needle for anyone outside of Oregon. Another in the deficit issue.
    5) Beavers on the negative on retaining players. If they are good and have solid seasons, P4 $$$ takes them away.
    6) Coaching staff is too inexperienced at the top. In fairness to Bray, too small of sample size but the trend is not looking good.
    7) No big boosters financially supporting the program to compete with the big boys. Translation, mediocrity at best for the foreseeable future.

In summary, unless there is a major uptick in NIL $$$, OSU will forever be fighting human uphill battle. It’s clear that we can’t compete even with the low-toi-mid-level P4 programs bc of the money and talent disparities.

At least in football, things don’t look great moving forward.

    • Given all of that, is the best course of action to:
      A) stand pat and hope Bray matures as a HC in the next 3-4 years
      B) reduce football funding and pivot financially to all other sports, mainly baseball
      C) roll the dice on a new staff from a lower level like WSU just did, and build it up for 5-6 years
      D) try to bring in a known big name coach on a reputation rebuild like Jimbo Fisher, even if it is only for 2-3 years and try to catch lightning in a bottle again that mirrors DE era
      E) accept your fate and drop down to FCS

      • Well, I’m not sure although a good start would be to change their offense to a more up tempo style to catch up with the rest of CFB and dump the pro style offense. If that means making a change with Gunderson, so be it.

Beyond that and unless a major donor steps up to plate for NIL, they are kind of stuck. I think the best we can hope for is a national movement to restore some sanity to the NIL and the portal to make it a little more equitable.

The next realignment will be a key point for where G5 programs land. Maybe the best thing is to let the SEC and B10 break out from the NCAA and do their own thing while the rest of the conference create their own division and playoff system as that’s where it appears to be headed anyway.

The fact is, if things stay the same, the beavers, cougs, et al will always be fighting a losing battle as the have nots and I don’t think it will matter who the coaches are.

I just know taking the same approach year after year is like treading water while trying not to sink.

      • Great questions! Maybe start by getting a new AD who is aggressive and thinks outside the box. Maybe Barnes’ hands are tied by the administration and boosters??? I thought I read how most football programs are the main money maker for the athletic department so it is imperative to try and get it built up. My vote would be to try and attract a big name coach with a proven track record of success. On another would be to attract a highly successful coach at a mid major but might prove difficult to attract recruits.

      • A) yes but I’d go with another two years max although having a revolving door with coaches can set the program even further back.

        B) no bc football is the revenue generating sport

        C) potentially after bray has 3-4 years under his belt.

        D) bring in a big name JC? I’m not certain given the NIL, portal and G5 status.

        E) dropping down to FCS would kill athletic programs bc media $$$$ is far less $4-5M

The only option at this point is stay the course and if this season goes South, make some changes to your offense and offense coordinator if the offense doesn’t show major improvement.

        • I’m gonna try and reserve judgement until after the FS game this weekend – if there is no improvement over last weekend and it’s another dumpster fire and 0-4 becomes a reality, I’m not supportive of giving Bray another couple of years to cut his teeth as a HC; the guy really didn’t want the job in the first place. But as usual, the Beavers went with the quickest, least expensive route possible in getting an HC and we’re seeing what happens when they do that: ala Ralph Miller and Jimmy Anderson.

We had the opportunity to do a thorough coaching search, we didn’t do it and now we have what we have. I know Bray has had to deal with some circumstances out of his control, like the implosion of the PAC12, NIL, Portal, etc. but I’m just not convinced yet that he is the way forward.

  22. that offense is painful to watch. how does a college team in 2025 look this antiquated and far behind? these guys have no idea what they are doing, and I for one appreciate seeing Murphy berating Langsdorf and his stupid philosophy.

    • Antiquated?

You can recall someone running whatever we call what happened on Saturday at some point in the past?

The Keystone Cops are all I can think of.

  23. The O line was totally overmatched. Losing Coach M was worst part of the traitor screwing his school. Short of some miracle happening, this is going to be a horrendous football season.

    • Wouldn’t matter though because anyone decent would transfer after developing. Many programs will become irrelevant unless there become some guidelines for NIL that help create a cap and money to programs that lose players to the portal (transfer fee in soccer).

      • Yes, that is a possibility but you have to build a culture where players want to stay with the olders one leading the newer younger ones. Very difficult to do in todays environment. Look at Iowa State and Boise. Not easy but it can be done.

  24. Well, after a worse loss with higher expectations and more NIL $, Belichek has to go home and console himself with his 28 year old girlfriend…

  25. “You take control of the pace of the game. You don’t want the offense to dictate it,” Bray said. “Offenses will to try to get fresh players on the field and try to rush you. And within the rules, you get a chance to match that substitution. So, we time it that if Cal sub, we sub. And it slowed down the game and slowed their pace down as they tried to dictate how the game was playing. That’s why we did it.”

    Hmm.

  26. 11
    2

I’ve officially reached the point in my life where I have many, many better things to do on Saturdays than watching this shit product / Riley 3.0 bullshit. What a depressing end to OSU athletics.

  27. Attendance was reported at over 31,000, not bad if true, with a holiday weekend and students not on campus yet.

Did it look that full, or was that “tickets distributed?”

Beavs will show up if they have something to show up for.

But Oregon doesn’t have the overall population and OSU doesn’t have the fanbase to fill up Reser on labor day weekend if there isn’t any reason to be excited about the product.

Just win and they don’t have any problems selling out 35k every game.

        • There are about a thousand ways the OSU AD could stack wins off-the-field that support the mission on-the-field.

Engagement (social-media etc), brand identity and promotion, attention to detail on the product/game day experience, etc.

BSU and TXST getting it done at a fraction of the budget.

        • I am pretty tired of the “woe is us” attitude, it is self fulfilling. Oregon State has plenty of assets that should have them competing for PAC titles year in and year out which would easily fill Reser and likely make them competitive for attention within Oregon even if UO is competing for B!G titles.

They need the whole school to want it though, it has to be a university wide commitment, we’ve seen it with baseball and now, conference or no conference, they have no problem competing. Casey built it but the University committed to sustaining it.

Given how much it has invested in Reser it continues to puzzle me why we don’t see such a commitment to football. The resources exist to dominate the new PAC. Just need to find the will. I was very open to this staff but after Saturday they’ll need to perform to re-earn any faith. They can be better if they want it.

Turn the collapse of the PAC and rebuilding it into the strength it is and their commercials claim. Actions indicate they see it as an anchor. So it will be.

    • Good news, just received an email from the ad, apparently the longest bar in college football has been added to reser, along beaver street, get a seat for $100 and you get seat service to drink your woes away. Now *that* is targeted marketing!

  28. Finally got the nerve to watch my recording of the game and that cal QB might be the best QB we see all year aside from Dante Moore at Oregon. The kid is elite and as good as advertised, however, lack of pressure on any QB will result in a superb performance.

I saw some improvement on the backside of the defense but also some missed assignments. Defensive line played okay despite their lack of pressure on the QB.

I think Cal is a quality team but OSU offense lacks any consistent play. MM is okay but without a solid run game, defenses will tee off on him. The O line needs to step up and dramatically improve.

I’d like to see more of JJ and Allah…I still thank a faster pace on offense is important and why not go back to the fly sweep as it freezes the LB and forces them to play honest.

FSU is a must win game. If the Beavs lose, 0-4 start and the season is another washout.

      • How can you attempt to establish anything if just getting the play call in and out of the huddle and getting lined up correctly and the right guy in motion isn’t even doable?

      • 2
        1

That’s bc the Beavs fell behind too early and the O line couldn’t create holes for Hankerson. That’s why the fly sweep is important bc it can freeze the LBs if just for a second or two. In addition, Salah seems to be a little quicker to the hole so showing the defense a change of pace can be effective. The real issue is the beavers offense is Riley vanilla and predictable.

        • 3
          1

They didn’t try to create any holes. They kept trying to run east/west and losing yardage.

Then when they started running north/south and making progress, they tried a fly sweep for negative yardage, and it stalled the drive for a FG. After that, the run was only ever attempted in short yardage situations, if a completion happened set one up. The runs were so predictable, half of them were stuffed. It was just an upside down way of implementing the run game.

    • 5
      1

“I still thank a faster pace on offense …”

Gunderson may be half koala bear…he does nothing at a fast pace. Watch for him feeding on eucalyptus leaves on the sideline….

      • BYU will show up, Sin City or not.
The city of St George alone is 65% LDS and it’s only a 2 hour car ride away.
Add to that the Provo/St Lake area fans only needimg a 1hr flight and that’s a recipe for a large turnout.
Beaver fans will only have a few flight options which will drive costs up and become a barrier to travel. Book your flights early. I remember the cost getting pretty ridiculous for our Vegas Bowl game a couple years back.

        • It will be a home game for BYU.

Hope the Beavs are getting more $ out of this….giving up a home game….I don’t like “neutral site” games taking games off campus.

    • 3
      1

I mean isn’t that the way it’s always been? Wasn’t Phil giving players limited edition footwear that would strangely show up on secondary sites for sale pre-NIL? It’s only a pretense of amateur sports, just a little less pretense at this point.

      • Just in general. I was living on Maui for years and am back in Oregon and want to try to take advantage while I’m here. Figured this would be a good spot to ask.

        • The new side is pretty good if you haven’t been. The stadium LOOKS like it was pieced together over time, but if there’s a competitive game and good crowd it’s enjoyable. I saw the 22-20 loss to UW a few years back and had a great time.

    • I was surprised last week tickets didn’t drop on Friday like I thought they would and I ended up doing the four pack for $99 through OCCU online. OCCU (Oregon College Credit Union? I think) had a special on FB. It was not available over the phone with the ticket office. They did have the four pack available for the Fresno game last I checked. Buy the cheapest tickets and then move about once inside. Where about did you live on Maui? The wife and I just want to Kaanapali this summer.

      • I lived north of kaanapali like 15 minutes just past honolua bay. How was it? I left in January and Lahaina still hadn’t really even started building.

Not sports related but I’m watching the original American Pie movie and they just don’t make great movies like that anymore. Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia) was just a stunning beauty. Stiffmeyster was hilarious and so many great and funny moments in that movie. An American classic and the apple pie moment was epic.

  30. Near term realignment chaos:

“Florida State and Clemson are seeking to leave the ACC due to financial reasons and view the SEC as a potential destination.

A legal settlement allows FSU and Clemson to leave the ACC after the 2030 season, but an earlier move to the SEC is possible.

Adding the two football powerhouses could help the SEC stay competitive with the Big Ten, which has recently gained an edge.”

Then when the ACC falls apart, where might CAL and Stanford go? B12? B10?

    • They just need to get with and not delay in making their “mega” conference of 32-34 teams mostly made up of SEC, Big 10 and a few other blue bloods.

“Oregon State football player Exodus Ayers accused of domestic violence by former girlfriend”

“Rodriguez claims that during her relationship with Ayers, which she said ended in May, she was physically abused and threatened through text if she didn’t go see him, according to court records. She told The Oregonian/OregonLive that Ayers allegedly sent sexually explicit photos and videos of her without her consent to his OSU football teammates, later sharing the purported screenshots of those conversations on her TikTok.

Ayers’ behavior on social media, including allegedly logging into Rodriguez’s accounts and creating fake accounts impersonating her, was among the reasons for pursuing a stalking protective order, Rodriguez told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Text messages shared by Rodriguez allegedly show Ayers telling her, “your (sic) the reason I hate all females” and “if you were dead … my life would be no different.””

      But mainly make some $.

    • Probably hit the portal ASAP, make some $ at a school where he can get a fresh start, make the most of this “teachable moment,” and grow as a person…

      But mainly make some $.

Exodus: A concept of departure: from the Greek word meaning “exit” or “departure.”

    • Wonder if it was more the coaching, or the fans that wore on him?(or both)
He mentions not wanting to name a name, so maybe coaching?
Too bad he’s not here because we could use a guy who can catch 5 or 6 balls a game.

    • Does anyone know what he’s referring to here:
“So, it was cool not being the guy getting things thrown at you. I don’t want to say the name.”

      • That surprised me. Does he mean literally at Reser, which I find difficult to believe, or in terms of some criticism? Did a coach question the legitimacy of his injury or his toughness?

        • As guys come and go, they need something to deflect from the money they get paid, so we will probably see more stuff like this for a while. Some vague story of negative stuff where he left to generate positive vibes where he is.
Agents know that fans still want to root for these guys so feed the beast some sob stories.

      • It seems clear to me that he was referring to the experience of playing in Pullman as a visiting team member. Not a jab at OSU, but recognizing that the WSU fans can be rough on visiting teams. He didn’t want to say the name of “those things” being thrown at you. Listen to the video around :30. Were there sex toys like in WNBA being thrown? Something else?

More concerning was his remark at about 4:30 in the video regarding the reaction of QB’s when a receiver drops the ball. That was likely a reference to Beaver QB’s lack of support/encouragement when things don’t go as planned…….or it could be a reference to some other prior team, HS?

Watching the entire video gives a much more accurate picture than the writers summary.

    • It’s not a secret, and even Bray has eluded to it, but the team did not have great chemistry or leadership last year.

Not everyone was bought in and onboard with the new direction and the new staff, and more looking out for their own personal interests.

I imagine that is going to be an ongoing challenge in this new era of college athletics.

I can see Noga leaving with a bit of bad taste in his mouth having been in the program when things were building under JS and then to have his last year with OSU be such a shit show, and ultimately lossing his spot on the depth chart.

Now he’s in a fresh start environment with a coach that brought in dozens of his own guys who are all bought into his culture, even though they might struggle to win many games fore the foreseeable future.

    Angry,
I’m a long time lurker since I first found the site as a student back in 2012, but I’m finally trying to join in on the comments and register an account. I’ve registered an account with a username and email address but never received the confirmation link to setup a password so I cannot log in. I tried emailing you as well. Thank you for any help you can provide. I’m going to the game tomorrow against my better judgment based on the awful showing from last week. GO BEAVS!

  34. 5
    2

So apparently the Athletic Department made a point of telling fans they could not wear body paint to the game and would get turned away at the gate if they showed up covered in paint.
So the fans got pissed and bitched at the athletic department all week about how unfun that would be and they werent going to show up at all.
So the athletic department reversed course and is now encouraging fans to show up and “paint the stands orange”
So now the fans are happy amd have forgotten how bad the team looked last week because they’re distracted by painting their bodies orange.
Some nice misdirection by the athletic department

    • I hope the students can have fun, otherwise, what’s the point?

I had a great time at games with (surprise!) bad Beaver football teams, but as students we had fun.

Alumni tend to over invest emotionally and take this stuff to seriously. I hope students are having fun in their section and partying before and after regardless the score…

just party safe and make good choices students…not many on campus yet I suspect…

  35. They could right the ship with a solid showing today, or the bottom could fall out. I figure that FSU will try to run the ball and avoid freshman qb mistakes. But we also know if they have done their scouting and study history, that FSU qb is primed for a career day in his first start against OSU. Does the Fresno OC have the guts to just throw the ball all around and call zone read qb runs as the recipe to defeat our beloved Beavs?

Bray will probably bring a lot of blitzes to confuse the kid, and likely none of them get a sack.

I don’t really trust Gundy/Langsdork to change anything and Murphy will probably lose his mind again by mid 2nd quarter. If Walker gets hurt the offense will cease to exist. Maybe they try to run the ball a little bit more this week, but I doubt it.

I still have my Beaver goggles on and I’ll guess:
    OSU 19-Bulldogs 17

  36. Looks like today’s game is on CW.
Does anybody have experience with live streaming CW games if you’re not at home? I downloaded the app, bit it almost appears that you can’t watch live Pac12 games on the app and can only get the replays. Is that correct?

  37. Technology is failing me. No CW app stream, No TV,and ESPN gametracker says there has been a single play in the game amd it was a 30 yrd run for TD by Freano.

  38. So much for “continuing to invest in our football program at the P5 level”. Our head coach didn’t/doesn’t even want to be a HC, we don’t have a defensive coordinator (!!) and our overall assistant salary pool is considerably lower than it was before.

    • Can someone recap what’s happened? All anyone mentioned above is a quick score by Fresno but then the game comes on and we have 6 points AND the ball?

      • FSU had a nice return on the kickoff, converted a 3 and long, copleted a few passes, then the qb ran in untouched form 30 yards out.

OSU answered with a nice drive and a TD for Freihauf after a MM scramble from about 15 yards out. Bad snap failed extra point.

Special teams are an issue again. Defense looks settled down.

  39. I saw a blurb in the local media that the P-12 is not required to discuss injuries this year, but some conferences are. We had no idea the long snapper was out injured. Bray won’t talk about anything.

    • Play calling and pace much better today.
SpTms still lousy, will Bray make a coaching change?…Naw, Jamie Christian and young Akey got nothing to worry about.

  40. Btw my youngest son was moved from guard to center in high school and had the exact same problem…too much adrenaline. I get it’s not hs vut gonna dog this kid

  41. We’re low-key on another situation where we’ve got injuries lining up. How does your long snapper have an upper body injury? Lol. Our strength and conditioning staff seems to be hot garbage. We just don’t seem to be a serious program right now. How do you not have more than 1 guy that can snap the ball? And how are we not going for 2 today when we legit can’t snap the ball but last week he’d go when not even remotely called for? Analytics don’t allow him to despite not having the right personnel?

    • Forget the injury, how do you not have a back up long snapper? That’s the evidence they aren’t a serious program right now. And they definitely aren’t.

  42. 3
    2

Stay positive. Knew it was going to be a ground up total rebuild, including rebuilding the conference. It’s like being part of a tech start up. Lots of upside eventually just not for a few years.

  43. Well, we could be Oklahoma St. They have some money, but it isn’t helping. Trail the Quacks 41-3 at the half. Gundy is going to lose his shit.

  44. 5
    2

This program is a joke. Only coach earning some of their salary is the secondary coach, but even then, most our secondary can’t tackle worth shit so that’s being generous. Gundy burns play clock down in every 2 min drill when every other fucking coach goes into hurry up. He’s dog shit. Our TE room ismfucking awful. Caufield was supposedly a stud and he’s only shown up in negative plays…fumbles, holds, etc. Says a lot about our TE room if he’s still our best guy. Murphy needs to be more consistent. Made a couple great throws but then missed a couple wide open receivers that could’ve been touchdowns. Our DL looks like a bunch of midgets out there and get pushed backwards 3 yds. Our LBs get caught up in the wash and we don’t touch an RB until they’re 8 yds down the field. Can’t even go into the special teams. Bray said it best, fucking joke

  45. Looks for the positives. Which individual player do you think is playing well? Giving 110%. They need encouragement, the OLine body language as they walked off is really down.

  46. Not sure what Ryan Leaf thinks he’s looking at? The Fresno player knocked Wells’ head back with his shoulder. Finally, a nice break for the Beavs!

  47. Well, this is a shitty product. The saddest part is the athletes are there but it’s clear shitty coaching is costing us another season. How do you not have a capable backup snapper? That’s JV stuff right there. Hire someone outside of this terrible underachieving coaching tree. Someone who has never sniffed football at Oregon State.

  48. This is like watching a slow motion car wreck… but the car is on fire, in an underwater tornado. Oh, and the car is full of puppies.

  49. 2 minutes to go, got the ball on Beavs 32….a chance for Gundy to make a mark.
Play calling, pace, use of TO’s, big opportunity if decent coaching….can Cavs guys avoid penalties??

  50. I know I’m just echoing what everyone else has already said, but how do you not have a backup long snapper who can actually long snap?

  51. They got some work to do if they want to play D1 ball. They had some bright spots but not having a backup long snapper is kind of a head scratcher.

  52. Don’t despair guys as the beavers will win the next 10 in a row or 8 out of 10 or 1 out of 10. BTW, how do you not have a back up long snapper as every other position has a back up?

  53. Last of the death rattle, time of death should be end of fourth quarter, @ UO…

Apparently 9 different Duck players scored TDs in their win over Okie State…

      • Let me just say, I hate the ducks for reasons to numerous to go through here, but father Phil has bought himself a team this year that looks like it would be able to compete with at least half the teams in the NFL. Watching bits of yesterday’s game, I really thought Oklahoma State would be competitive and I waited for them to kick it in to gear; it never happened.

All I thought of is why did the real OSU feel the need to schedule a game with this team?? We benefit in no way from this and isn’t necessary.

  54. Pre-season it was widely assumed there would be losses on the road vs TT and nike; many expected no better than a 2 and 2 start to the season. Now 4 and 4 looks almost certain. The big question is whether or not Bray can keep this TEAM together for the last 8 games.
Beyond SpTms or O-line play, i’ll be watching for the level of effort from players and for team cohesion……..not confident right now.

Hard truth is Bray bears responsibility for whatever happens; can’t just blame Robb Akey, his kid, Cavanaugh, Jamie Christian or Gundy/Langsdorf. We’re going to find out if enthusiasm and a competitive core (Bray) is enough to get the job done in Corvallis.

    • Honestly probably my favorite Bray moment but its on him for not having a back up long snapper ready, it wasn’t the Spring Game here, how does this happen?

  55. 4
    1

Bray resignation incoming? He can’t be happy with this debacle and now it is imploding on him.
Last week Gundy needed to go, this week the special teams coach needs to go. Special teams had a lot more problems than just the long snapper.
Coach Cav should be fired for his guys having 6 false starts. Unbelievably bad preparation for both games and these were at Reser.
Road games will be horrifically bad and I’d expect the Ducks to hang 80 on the Beavs just for fun and old times sake.

Reality is beginning to set in for OSU. Sure they could have won both games but losing 2 winnable games in such unexpected ways is not a good look. We are going to be a laughingstock and this year will put OSU back about 30 years old n one disastrous season. Andersen was secure by being in the PAC12 but that is no more.
Bray is like a ship captain trying to bring the ship back on course but the tide and headwinds just don’t allow it and then his own crew is inept, and navigating equipment is all malfunctioning. A great captain may be able to overcome those things but an inexperienced captain will fail disastrously. Sadly, Bray is probably risking his future coaching career by being saddled with this program’s baggage.

    • 11

Quitting 2 games into a season will hurt his coaching career more than having a crappy year.
At the end of the day, despite how inept they have been in certain facets, they’ve been competitve with similar level competition, but obviously the worse overall team in both games. It’s not unsalvageable. Think about how bad GA teams were like the year our only win was an OT home game vs Portland State.

      • 11

Actually, we looked like the better team. Just made too many mistakes. But when you outgain an opponent by 210 yards and hold them to 1/8 on 3rd down, you should win.

        • All true on paper, but you know what is said about liars and statistics. Bottom line: Cal and Fresno played pretty clean games and Beav sloppiness gave ’em the games.

      • I get it but Bray may be the most competitive coach we have and he must be furious and frustrated.
His attention is divided now with DC duties. The plan had to be that he could offload some oversight for special teams and offense to the additional staff but it isn’t working and now even the defense has issues to work through.
No question the special teams was a disaster though.

It is bad when we are referencing Andersen, Avezzano eras already and we are only 14 games into the Bray era. 5-9 so far, lost how many in a row?

        • Smith’s first couple of years were pretty shaky too, and he didnt have to deal with NIL deficiencies or having no conference affiliation. We’re kidding ourselves if we thought we’d lose our conferenve, lose our revenue, revamp our entire roster and staff amid turmoil and somehow be competive with more stable programs(which is just about every other program in the nation outside of WSU)

  56. I know there is going to be a lot of doom and gloom in camp Oregon State. And there is a lot to be upset about. But mostly because we should have won this game by 2-3 scores. The fact of the matter is if we clean up the mistakes and find someone to snap the ball. We could be a decent football team this year. But we put up 528 yards of offense and held them to 318. We held them to 1/8 on 3rd down. And without some of the offensive penalties maybe we put up 600 yards of offense. But I’ll tell you what, I have never seen a team lose because of a long snapper injury.

  57. Bray was apparently heard cursing the special teams coaching and or play on the sidelines…saw the headline, didn’t read the article….

  58. 4
    2

I don’t know what the program needs to do to move forward but I think it honestly needs to start at the top. Bray needs to go. I would love it, and he probably would to, if the new HC would keep him as DC. I think we need Bray for his defense, dedication to OSU and recruiting but I don’t think he wants to be HC. The majority of the staff is awful. Gundy got some yds today but his 2 minute drill was head scratching again outside of that last score. Our DL is way undersized and weren’t holding to their responsibilities. If you don’t have size, you gotta at least play your role well and they didn’t. We had 0 pass rush and never hurried their qb all game. If we can’t record sacks vs teams with our similar talent level, that’s abismal. I don’t know where our LBs are. I think I heard Foster’s name 1 time all game? I haven’t looked at the stats so not sure where he ended up with tackles but the safeties seemed like the ones making the majority of tackles for the 2nd week in a row. We need a new DL coach at a minimum. Not sure about our secondary coach. Definitely had tackling issues today. Seems like a big talent drop off for us after the top 3 secondary guys.

The WR coach might be the best one we have. Their blocking seemed really good and Walker, Freuff and Reddicks looked really solid today. Coach Cav has been dealt a tough hand. Came in late, bunch of injuries and guys who’ve never really played before. They looked undisciplined today which is surprising for a coach Cav group. If the Special Teams coach is still employed tomorrow, you’ll have to question if Bray can make the decisions necessary to build this program. Considering that he actually has a decent salary pool to work with, he’s made some shitty hires. Obviously not going to strike gold every time, but it seems like he’s missed more than he’s landed.

Based on these first 2 weeks, I think 2 wins for this team is more realistic than 4 or 5 and that’s insane to say looking at the schedule. Lafayette and Sam Houston are the only 2 I would feel “comfortable” about. Tulsa is a road game and we play even worse on the road. App State I had as a loss even before the season but we have 0 chance now. I don’t see Wake Forrest being a good ACC team but Cal showed us our line play is well behind even the mid to low tier P4 schools. We can’t beat WSU in Pullman ever so don’t see that being any different. Losing is bad enough, but the manor in how we’ve lost and the complete joke this team has looked like thru 2 weeks leaves no hope that this coaching group can do what’s necessary to make OSU even competitive in our own downgraded conference.

Agree that this staff isn’t the correct staff and your prediction for the remainder of the season. But this is larger than the coaching staff.

In modern college football the program needs a university wide commitment like baseball only has at OSU. Cut/fundraise where needed to make said commitment and the university will make it up on the back end. A full re-brand away from the “Nike sleek” brand and back to a more traditional consistent brand should be part of this (build uniforms off the 60’s look would be my preference but whatever you do get rid of the modern Beaver please).

Ultimately the university appears prepared to miss a great opportunity to be in a big fish in a small pond. If OSU was competing for PAC titles every year Reser would be full, OSU would be relevant nationally and OSU can do this far easier than UO can in the B!G where they are a big fish but in a pond with equally to bigger fish.

I wish OSU would live up to the message they send in that commercial they run during games but I’m not seeing it.

  59. I’m guessing Murphy opts out after the Oregon loss. Returns his NIL or cancels it, and sits out the season and save himself for another opportunity elsewhere.

    • Fuck him if he does, I want someone who wants to earn it, and not just be given something…he has had plenty of fuck ups, he doesn’t get to point the finger at anyone

Our last TD…fucking slide at the 2 yd line. Run the clock down. Idk why we gave them time left on the clock to win the game. And if the LS is out then go for 2, why even try the PAT’s?

    Bray = Riley 2.0

This is worse than the Andersen era because those games we had no shit. This year we have the players to have a shot but our dumbass all alum staff is completely fumbling the most basic in-game decision making.

      • 3
        2

Anderson era was at least vs P4 schools in a good conference. It’s just a sad state of affairs for this program. Athletics is a mess. Men’s basketball is a joke and will be for at least a few years until Wayne is gone and the next guy has had a few years to try and prove himself. That program may well be dead though. Women’s basketball won’t be nearly as relevant anymore…maybe competitive in the new Pac but definitely don’t see us getting the talent like Rueck was able to get in the prime years. Might make a tourney here and there. Baseball is legitimately the only thing we’ve got going on.

    • When trailing you score the TD when you get the chance. You don’t play games with that.

But I do agree this feels very NeoAndersen…..

  61. Sad part is we would have won this game by 3 scores if it hadn’t been for long snapper debacle. But with that said I was expecting more from our defense this year. Still no rush.
Our 1.5 million dollar QB is look until he isn’t. Still throwing pick balls like last year and not a good scrambler when presser comes.
    OL improved from last game.
Our WR’s are better the last year. Our secondary had great break ups and great break downs.
Next two games will be ugly even if we get a long snapper that can snap long.

Based on the box score we should’ve beaten them. What this speaks to though, is just how bad the coaching is in many areas. 6 o-line false starts, and many of them either near red zone or on crucial downs. That shit cant happen, especially at home when you cant blame crowd noise. I said it earlier, Coach Cav dealt a tough hand with coming in late and injuries but discipline on the snap should be easier to Coach up than learning a new position or blocking techniques, etc. Inexcusable to have that many at home. Why the coaches kept trying to make long snaps on punts and everything else after the first few bundled attempts is beyond me. You’d have been better off pooch punting it. Makes no sense. This is a broken team and how they can even hold the locker room after the complete ass kicking we’re going to take over the next 2 weeks is beyond me. I wouldn’t be the least bitsurprised if we get outscored by 100+ combined points vs TT and Yucks. This team plays this bad at home and we are even worse on the road. It’s Busch league stuff from a program thats supposedly showing it’s P4 worthy. Also, Cougs looked very good vs SDSU last night and I will chalk both those games as losses. They made a good step forward in game 2, we turned around and sprinted 400yds backwards

      • 6 Oline false starts, how many by WRs?

And in the quiet confines of Reser!!!

How many at TT? How many at UO, where the crowds will be loud and ready to watch their expensive rosters feast on the poor?!? Few, if any teams spend more on NIL rosters than UO and this year, TT.

While I was wrong on the level of blowout, I was correct the Beavs should have been the underdog in this game. I’m seeing the final line was Beavs +3? That’s insane and was easy money. Beavs should be the underdog in every game but maybe three.

When I was harping about NCAA sports being over in 2011-2012 with expansion, I wasn’t joking. It took a while to fully dismantle it, but they (the people with money who care less about history or equity) succeeded.

      1

It does seem like an accelerated death spiral for OSU athletics right now.

You could try to spin a positive that in spite of horrible execution, terrible clock management, disastrous special teams, poor tackling the Beavs were 2-3 plays away from winning both games. But we need to be honest with ourselves at this point. It isn’t good and the program is in a free fall slide. The next 3 weeks are losses and we should begin to expect the “season ending” injuries to start piling up once Bray loses the locker-room. Some guys will stay the course but I expect a fair amount to start searching for greener pastures.
WSU has the ability to consistently reset their coaching staffs and the program keeps churning along but OSU can’t get out of its own way.
Fresno State of all places has brought in multiple coaching regimes, all with success in the last decade but
OSU can’t get beyond the Riley coaching retreads.
The “Pro-Style Offense” is now a detrimental tagline for OSU recruiting because kids aren’t interested in what they will never need. NFL is shifting to the zone read concepts more each year and We are stuck in the mud selling horse and buggy to people interested in the Model T.
We are witnessing the self destruction of a cherished but dreadfully anemic sports program due to lack of awareness and vision for well over 50 years. The traitorous schools were sort of correct when they kicked OSU to the curb because they were no longer willing to drag OSU along. OSU has no interest in taking risks and desiring to win so the results are a ridiculously embarrassing loss at home to Fresno State on a beautiful fall day.

The denial of the rise of NikeU/Chipster in favor of Riley 2.0 extended will be the legacy. Riley hypnotized an entire generation of beleaguered OSU boomers and it will haunt OSU.

If a guy like Ben Arbuckle can go from scouting at a D3 college to OC at Oklahoma in a 5 years span, what is OSU doing wasting time with Bray and Gundy? There are others just like Chip Kelly and Ben Arbuckle in the lower ranks winning with schemes and lesser talent but OSU needs to be dull, lunch pail U, giant killers, pro style, cliches that keep them prisoners to Riley and his crew.

For those asking what we have to be angry about, now you know.

      • I pin the failure of our athletic department on the OSU administration who seems to care not about sports. Part of the blame also goes to the AD Barnes who I think has been inept. Can anyone mention a good coach he has hired??? The two major sports programs that identify a school – basketball and football have been a train wreck for 40 years!!! Please spare me on the basketball program going to the final 8 one year or the limited success the football program has had. The administration needs to make a financial decision to compete for – consistently for conference championships or shut down the athletic department. I’ll gladly spend my time and money watching programs that are invested in winning or pursuing other options.

    • Have you seen how lopsided scores across the country have been this year? I know there are always a few of these, but this is becoming normal. How is this considered entertainment worth spending time and money on?
The gap netween the Haves vs Have Nots is widening rapidly and it’s only going to het worse

      Ohio St 70 – Grambling 0
      Penn St 34 – FIU 0
      Miami 45 – Bethune – 3
      Oregon 69 – OkSt 3
      FSU 77 – East TexasA&M 3
      Alabama 73 – UL Monroe 0
      Tenn 73 – E Tenn 17
      Indiana 56 – Kennesaw 9
      Texas Tech 62 – Kent St 14
      Utah 63 – Cal Poly 9
      Minn 66 NW State 0
      Auburn 42 – Ball St 3
      Nenraska 68 – Akron 0
      Wash 70 – UV Davis 10

      • That’s just non conference football. Remember fsu was terrible last year so it doesn’t guarantee anything. But ya games like the ucks and *osu is pretty bad.

      • The big ten and sec will sell many tickets and have good tv ratings because they have a lot of marquis matchups throughout the regular season. The rich get richer.

      • When national attendance starts to decline bc of the lack of parity and advertisers see that those numbers drop, we might see more balance bright back like with the 85 scholly limits back in the 80’s. Until parity is restored, it will only get worse. OSU will be on the lopsided emfs of those scores playing P4 teams.

I took my family to the game and Reser was empty, maybe 15,000 – 20,000 fans in attendance? It was a 12:30 kickoff with great weather, against a decent opponent, in September and empty. While we were walking to the stadium I noticed that the Truax indoor practice facility has pieces underneath the roof completely falling apart almost the entire length of the building. It’s apparent that not only has the team given up, but the University looks like they are giving up too. If nobody cares, then why should the fans? It will most likely be the only Beaver football game that we will go to and we live locally. The team might win 2-3 games in what is arguably the easiest football schedule in school history! Beaver football is officially dead during a time they literally can’t’ afford to be. In a newly realigned PAC-12, the Beavers are going to be bottom of the list, when they should be at the top. College football has been completely ruined by TV networks and greed. I’ve been a Beaver fan since the Dave Kragthorpe years but I’ll go enjoy the outdoors, camping, hiking, fishing, etc. instead.

  64. 5

I really feel sorry for Bray. No question he’s a believer, and his enthusiasm for the game and for this team can be catching, and has helped us get good talent. He knows defense, and should be our dedicated defensive coordinator.

But he was promoted above his ability. With his hires he tried to build a Beaver culture, and believed his coaches would follow suit. But they haven’t.

One of the most important aspects of being a head coach is hiring, and that is not one of Bray’s talents. I had a sinking feeling back in his early days as head coach and he very quickly made hiring decisions. Too quickly.

He doesn’t seem power-hungry. I wonder if he would take a move back to DC, after firing the coaches who took advantage of his belief and vision. Pave the way for a remake.

Who should go? Any coach associated with special teams, for sure. With the odd injury equation last year and this, I’d get rid of the strength training coach. Cav should go. And then Gundy. And all those Riley ghosts who were hired to help Bray with other duties as he tried to reboot the defense this year.

    • 2
      1

After watching that halftime clip with Nigel Burton, while I am completely sympathetic with the sentiment made by Bray, you can tell he really is in over his head. It will take a hurclean effort to turn the ship around and I can envision a 1-2 win (maybe) season at this point. The coaching is really that bad. One thing that you can say about Riley, he took the players he had, regardless of ability, and coached them up. Bray doesn’t even act the part of a head coach at this point.

I still contend we should have worked harder with the MWC instead of clinging to the belief that the PAC 12 could be built up again into a formidable conference. WSU enevitably will jump ship the moment an alternative conference comes calling and makes an offer – they appear to be the more desireable team in the PAC. I just can’t believe with the amount of money that the University has invested in the facilities; so far, we don’t have much to show for it in the way of performance on the field.

We’re in for some difficult times ahead!

    • 7
      1

“one of the. most aspects…is hiring…” Agree.

Barnes hired a DC who never wanted to be an HC. Then the HC hired a bunch of alumni who are underqualified. The “Care Bear Coaching Staff.” Alumni who get togther and cared really hard so they could make things better.

In contrast, look at what UO did for example. When the CW was in danger of becoming a rubber match for a while, Belloti went out and hired Chip Kelly, a complete outsider with a different take on the game. Kelly was “lightening in a bottle” for four years, and his success converged with Nike $ and marketing to propel the ducks nationally (and yes, he left for the NFL before the penalties kicked in). Then every hire since has been someone from outside…Cristobal, the Fortune Cookie Coach….Lanning…money is a huge driver obviously, because they can afford to buy talented players, but they bring in different perspectives.

But the OSU approach has been to return to the OSU coaching “shrub,” rather than try anything truly innovative.

This is going to be a miserable year for Bray. He’s a valid DI defensive coordinator, but he’s inexperienced as an HC, and no one on his staff seems to match his energy or motivation. Whether he stays, gets fired for language, or resigns, its going to be a long season. Games at TT and at UO are likely to be as awful as some listed above by NiceBeaver.

The Beavers are losing to old PAC conference mates (CAL), and now to upcoming PAC conference foes (FSU)…when the new conference starts, they’ll be in the bottom third to quarter of the conference. without an infusion of Reser and Huang money for coaching hires and NIL to compete in DI, the future looks grim.

The ST coach should be spent walking today. Likely Koala Gundy too. But who is Bray going to bring in at this point of the season?

      • Yeah, I think his body language on the sideline keeps getting worse and worse. Like you said, I don’t think he ever wanted to be HC, but took the job out of a sense of obligation to the program (which is commendable), unlike the pudgy gnome who jumped ship at the first opportunity. The f-bomb was just a symptom of his growing frustration with the overall incompetence.

        • How many new coaches are on the staff this year? He’s got many new players and coaches. Devan was barely there. Everyone is looking to use non power programs as a stepping stone and I don’t blame them. You can bring in art briles, jimbo fisher etc and it won’t matter if the Wild West of how NIL is ran continues. Many fan bases are feeling the same thing of basically being left for dead.

  65. Even better than the Bray “highlight” of the f-bomb, was the OL dropping one when the ref’s mic was open announcing a holding penalty. Every Beaver fan was saying the same thing!

  66. So just to clarify the original starting long snapper is Black who battled cancer last year and is out not sure why. Jackson started as long snapper and was the long snapper most of last year with no issues that I can remember. It was clearly a case of the “yips” where he was in his head. Who knows what’s going on in an 18 year olds head. They put in his backup after the third bad snap bray said haverland a freshman and he obviously struggled as well.

Not making excuses but it sounds like this kids problem came out of nowhere and then they tried to address it and that didn’t work out either. Pretty ridiculous tho. I don’t think I’ve seen that many bad snaps in a pee wee game.

    • And just to clarify, the long snapping issue isn’t the only issue special teams has had. Even the last drive they could have saved some time and fair caught the kickoff which would have started the drive a few yards further.

      • That’s what is crazy about this staff. You clearly don’t have anyone that can snap the ball. Pooch punt. Fuck, just go for it. While not ideal, I think most fans would’ve rather had either of those 2 choices made vs continually fucking up over and over again. ST has been so bad these last 5+ years. Walker is a stud but he’s not particularly fast. Why is he returning punts? Wells or Card can’t? We seem to always try and run kickoffs back when we could fair catch and get good field position. So many things wrong with the decisions being made in multiple aspects of this program.

Will Murthey take charge? She should. If she has any connection with Huang, she should ask for money, not NIL, but to buy out the coaching staff. She doesn’t seem to have that connection.

A statement from Barnes? Probably not.

      19

She’s a bullsh*t DEI hire, way in over her head. The whole thing is rotting from the head down. You have to hit bottom before you can rebuild and this University is on the way to hitting bottom. Revenue is drying up and the liabilities are growing. It’s not like this is something only happening to OSU.

      • 13
        3

How do you know she is a DEI hire? Just bc she is non-caucasian doesn’t make her a DEI hire. Were you on the selection panel? Did you read the selection criteria during the recruitment? Do you know how many candidates were interviewed? Did you see the interview panel’s scoring during the selection process? Again, her ethnicity alone doesn’t mean that she was hired bc of race.

Furthermore, she has had more than one conversation with Huang and he actually attended a game in a luxury sky box with Murthy.

Bottom line is, some people view athletics as a worthwhile donation and others don’t. It is unfortunate that Huang doesn’t but he has donated lots of money to OSU for non-athletic reasons.

Making this a DEI issue is pure speculation as she might have been the most qualified candidate for the job.

        Furthermore, she has met with

You want to use race as an excuse for not performing? You can’t have it both ways…. Your entire economic model is based on student loans and borrowing against future earnings. For athletics, yes. And that’s a short term need which is a direct result of another lesser school in Oregon intentionally harming the economy of the state in a shortsighted move.

You’ve demonstrated nothing but ignorance, misogyny, and racism in this sequence of comments.

          • 3
            1

I didn’t bring up race but you certainly did with your reference to DEI. The entire country is operating in the red and has been since the Iraq war brought to you by another Republican war hawk, George W., at which we spent $12B per month for 7.5 years based on Weapons of Mass Deception.

In case you haven’t noticed, the federal government as well as state and local governments are running deficits often bc of failed policies, lack of vision, understanding and complying with their statutory mandates. In other words and I’m many cases, poor leadership based on the previously mentioned issues.

Is this the case for president Murthy? I don’t know that answer but I can tell you it has nothing to do with DEI/race.

Oregon wants to have a comprehensive social services network without any corporate revenue to pay for it. It’s fairly obvious the federal grants and subsides are gone. Now What? Wouldn’t surprise me if she ends up putting the football program on hiatus in the next couple years, she’s hemorrhaging cash, you can’t continue to spend more than you take in. The writing is on the wall.

          • It’s funny, blue states pump money into the SEC footprint and what they get in return is subsidized chicken breast with SEC marketing on it. Did Murthey make some enemies vigorously defending the PAC from the antitrust alliance?

          (b) Almost everyone white at OSU sucks, too, including our HC.
          (c) This isn’t helping OSU’s 60 year old reputation as a backward racist institution.

Your wild posit is based on bullshit.

            There’s not even a question.

She’s grown the university’s population and research monies extensively. She was the will behind reforming the Pac 12, now that we know Schultz was essentially a milquetoast putz on that front. She’s done a bang up job in a short period, and you’re ignoring all of it and saying some idiotic things in the face of evidence to the contrary. And the idiotic thing you attempted to base it on is a brain dead talking point parroted by brain dead parrots who like to play the misogyny and bigotry game.

So fuck off with you even thinking you posited a question of any kind, let alone one that could be valid, based on brain dead propaganda.

They should use all their NIL money to buy an offensive line, place kicker, and linebackers. Go where the NIL money is not. We’re playing Moneyball without revenue sharing. Need to buy yards and any points possible, forget about touchdowns. Look for older players that are still eligible that haven’t taken pro money, those that played in other countries. Yep, there’s the top teams, the bottom teams, 20 feet of shit and then there’s us.

    • Both lines. You have real talent and depth on both lines, you can fill in around with “legit” 3*s that want to play behind them and benefit from them..

I also like, conceptually, 3 year minimum deals with academic standards and buyout clauses, to try and promote stability, roster management, and academics, so my NIL concept probably wouldn’t fly very well…ha!

It’s the wild west, free for all at this point, for many players it’s more lucrative to play college than pro. I don’t see any model other than salary caps and revenue sharing working. Maybe spin off the NCAA into pro and amateur like golf. No one is going to pay for this product long term. Watching the Harlem Globetrotters beat the Washington Generals every time gets old even with the laughs and tricks.

This is all emotion. You don’t even have to look at the financials, every revenue stream for OSU is under assault. From federal grants to student loans to ESPN/Disney dismantling the PAC. Look at the product and how it’s suffering. You’ll get the inevitable we’ll figure it out from the loyalist with their dogma ideology but that’s usually the end game when they are yelling at the top of their lungs. Trump is fighting a way bigger macro fight right now, we’re a flea on the dog just trying to hold on, he just has to cut the checks off and we’re toast, that’s the entire Oregon economy

          • You have no idea what a Nazi is. It’s easy to throw words around without knowing what the fuck you’re talking about.
With your comments, you diminish the horrific nature of the Nazi’s and the 10’s of millions that died.

          • Except any objective look at OSU financials says otherwise. Athletics is one thing and is obvious. The only other thing affected is state funding for National Guard tuition funding.

That’s it. That’s the only thing you can hang your hat on. Your complaints are all imagined by you. Nothing you have claimed besides those two things (one you didn’t claim, because you’ve proven you have zero clues) is even remotely correct.

Now, if you want to talk about this subject for Nikegon, you have several things to point to, other than athletics. And even their accounting is shady.

  70. Has Bray fired the Special Ed Teams coach yet?
That had to be the most effed up way to lose a game I’ve ever witnessed in my life. Short of an absolute miracle we’re going to be 0-4 to start the season.

    • 100% agree that ST coach Jamie Christian and ST quality control coach Daniel Akey (we all need to know their names!) deserve to be kicked aside after the first two games.

However, there isn’t a pool of football coaches sitting by to take their places. There are enough problems on this team that you can’t expect the other coaches to put their fingers into the dam when they have their own issues to deal with.

Bray’s flaw is that his staff is mostly washed up coaches with connections to his dad. Robb Akey has been floating around the NW for years, with NO success at any stop. Now he shows up on Bray’s staff because he coached with Craig Bray at Wazzu 20 years ago. And brings his son along, for good measure. Jamie Christian has bounced from job to job based on his loose ties to the Dennis Erickson coaching clan.

I’m not sure that Bray is cut out to be a head coach but I am very sure that he has done a poor job of assembling a coaching staff to support him.

      • Bray hasn’t hired one coach that had performed at a high-level in the role Bray hired him for. Barnes needed to have stepped in.

If we fired everyone, maybe 1-2 of our coaches get another D1 job in the role they have with us.

    • To know the quality isn’t good and change it. I did read the backup long snapper was who played last year so maybe he got the yips or something for this game then they had to go to the third string inexperienced guy. Not ideal no matter what. I hope Black is back soon. I’m sure the long snappers are all feeling down on themselves. It would be one thing if that as the only area that looks juvenile but it’s not.

With all of the changes in college football and the huge reliance on money, the differences between the haves and haves not has substantially increased. We used to field some teams that were competitive with Oregon. Now it is not even close. Essentially, teams are bribing players to come instead of players wanting to play for a team. The hollowness of these purchased teams has turned college football into an empty and meaningless competition. I used to enjoy watching the Beavers try to compete with the larger programs, and took great delight when we could pull off some upsets. Now, it is just embarrassing and painful to watch the Beavers unable to compete well with lower division teams.

  72. Highlights: dinner Friday night at the Angry Beaver on 4th street and breakfast Saturday morning before the game at the Peacock. Got great seats off StubHub 33 rows up in Section 116 right on the 50 yard line. Lowlights: 1) Small crowd; 2) way too many penalties; 3) terrible center snaps 4) I attended the game with a Fresno State grad who wore a Fresno State t-shirt and there were a couple of Beaver fans that were quite rude to him as we walked by; nevertheless, he was very impressed with the campus, stadium and Corvallis in general in his first visit to OSU.
