It’s official as Wemby has been ruled out of games 3&4. That sucks for him but suddenly gives the blazers a shot. I don’t really care about the NBA and haven’t got a long time, but it’s interstate news for those that do .

    News article by CBS Sports on MCBB;

“Oregon State on absolute fire under new coach Justin Joyner. The Beavers retained Josiah Lake, who averaged over 13 points per game, and added an influx of real-deal talent. San Francisco transfer Legend Smiley is a 42% 3-point shooter, Daniel Freitag can really score and there’s loads of size on the wing and the frontcourt with Jackson Rasmussen (Idaho), DeShawn Gory (Fresno State), Dennis Evans (Grand Canyon) and Xavion Staton (BYU). Joyner’s group will be instantly competitive in the new-look Pac-12. Hire studs and get out of the way.”

    • I was noticing this, and I really, really like the fact that a handful of these dudes are not upperclassmen (I think I saw 3-4 sophomores). This, of course, comes with the possibility of another transfer for their careers, but assuming OSU comes out and makes noise – that might bring in the money needed to retain players or Lake will lead the way with his loyalty. I want to be wary of anything Scott Barnes has touched, but so far I’m liking the Joyner hire and Shephard isn’t too far off either. If both do well then I’ll be super pumped because we removed the cancer from our Athletic Department AND we’re winning games. We shall see.

  3. Now so-called experts are saying that Wemby is questionable for tonight’s game but it sounds to me like they are trying to manipulate the betting line trying to get more action on tonight’s game. I guess we will see.

  4. Haight getting acquainted with the wall, two nice plays.

Dax takes himself out in the t7 after 89 pitches, now the speculation begins.

  5. Former Beaver CB Jermod McCoy not drafted as of the first three rounds. Apparently ran a 4.37 at his pro day, but concerns about his knee have hurt him. Scanning the draft, looks like 12 CBs drafted in first three rounds (a SDSU CB went in the first round). Some considered McCoy a top 10 pick, some thought he’d be off the board by #15. And that’s part of the reason these kids take the NIL when they can….I wondered what he got paid to to Tennessee.

Also, on another note, I saw an article praising OSU Beavers MBB coach Joyner’s recruiting progress to date, predicting Beavers MBB to be very competitive in the new PAC, and that the PAC could offer some good basketball.

    • Yeah only following the draft to see how the Raiders are doing wild to hear talking heads just absolutely drooling over mccoy. I remember him being good but not a top 10 type player. Word seems to be his knee injury was worse that what has been reported, despite his awesome pro day, or worries that he didn’t come back as soon as he could have and sort of called it in instead of playing in 25 looking ahead to draft day instead

Raiders need CB help and hoping he’s the top 10 type pick they’re talking about

    • report on his knee was how his surgery was done and fear that it needs to be fixed again and he may never play again if it doesn’t go well. He’d lose another season to recover so that’s why teams were hesitant in the early rounds. He’d be out of football for two whole years since his original acl surgery.

  6. Whitney’s injury of forearm tightness is less bad than blowing out his elbow. But generally he’s going to be out for the next 2 weeks or so. Out next week for sure to rest and then spend the second week building back up to make sure it doesn’t flare up again.

Best case scenario, he returns for the last series of the year. In the meantime, someone will have to step up and throw a lot of innings.

Now we see what the guys like Edwards, Scott, Queen are made of in pressure. Dorman has been sending out a lot of guys through the year and some of them really need to find consistency.

As Mike Parker was describing it last night, I figured a return to Omaha was just flushed if Dax isn’t pitching those Friday games in the post season. EK will need to step into the Friday guy role and take the leadership role for the next month.

I’m hopeful that Dax isn’t going to be out for the rest of the season, but he has a $200 mil arm, and no way OSU gambles with his future for Omaha. They already made that mistake with Kevin Abel.

Beavs Rugby NCR 7’s Championship update. Beavs lost their first two games in the nation’s capital against #2 West Chester and UNC-Charlotte, but won the consolation bracket called “The Shield” in Rugby lingo. Shut out Nebraska 24-0 and rolled over Temple 36-17 in the final. Mckalk Jr did not travel due to a hamstring injury from an earlier tournament. Finished 11-6 for the 7’s season.

The NBA is just unwatchable. Watched about one quarter, mid 3rd quarter and early 4th quarter. It’s like watching street ball and pickup games. Great athletes but the game is so disjointed and really lacks fluid flow. Just jack up 3s even though you can’t throw the ball in the ocean. National Bad Association.

    • I tend to agree…its the best athletes in the game not playing the game to its highest level. And the refereeing is of course terrible.

I think a guy like Wemby at SA is different…seems to respect the game, bring effort consistently, tries to impact the game in multiple ways and does obviously.

    • I’ve felt that way for a while now. Isn’t that the old cliche? Tune into an NBA game with three minutes to go, and if it’s close, watch.

  9. Just got back from the Spring Game. With the roster turnover, it was kinda hard to know who was who. Just basing it off the size of the linemen, it seemed like Murphy was going against the starters, Brady Jones was with the twos and Braden Atkinson QB’d the threes – but I could be wrong. Murphy seemed to move the best in the pocket and he makes the other two (especially Atkinson) look small, but Atkinson made a couple of nice down the field throws. Jones meanwhile was kinda inconsistent – he missed a short pass early that might have scored and he seemed to have trouble getting the offense lined up. TE DeCorian Temple also dropped a wide, wide open ball (forget who threw it) that he probably would have scored on. The running game went nowhere and the kicking game (3 or 4 missed field goals) was awful, but at least the snaps were good. Probably the highlight was Kourdey Glass (Fr RB) taking a short pass out of the backfield about 65 yards for a TD after a couple of nice moves. Hard to draw any real conclusions with a new coach and roster – but the talent level definitely feels more Mt West than Pac 12 (which is to be expected). Feel free to correct me.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see Galloway get hot! Looking good today, his first HR to make it 8-1 Beavs in the b7; this after a solid RBI double in the second.

  11. Listened to the Shepard discuss the spring game. My two meaningful takeaways: 1) they need to get stronger and bigger, and 2) he wants to explore putting the student section behind the opponents. Be great if they put the opponents in the sun and in front of the student section. Especially this year, with sparse crowds. Students will hopefully show up and have fun.

Totally agree on the bench sidelines being swapped. Even makes sense from a locker room perspective where the opponents enter the stadium on that side already.

        • Shows how much I’ve paid attention lately. I thought they still came in from the ramp across from Gill. I’ve only visited Reser once since the newest round of renovations

    • I was wondering if maybe it was the helmet caps they were all wearing (except the QBs) that were making their bodies look smaller. Guess they are just smaller – which is why I had written above that the roster has more of a Mt West vs a Pac 12 feel in terms of size and speed.

Beaver State is consistent and only shows up and comments after a beavers loss but rarely ever comments after the beavers win. I wonder why?

  13. 1
    7

My best guess is Wyatt Queen moves into the starting rotation if Dax is out but I don’t know if Dorman will shuffle the starting rotation moving either Ethan to the Friday night spot or Segura to Friday night. I would think that Dorman would just move queen into the Friday night slot. I guess we will see.

  14. A sign of thinning talent…no Beavers drafted, few free agent deals.

Defensive back Skyler Thomas signed a FA deal with the Chicago Bears, per league source. Thomas is receiving a $20,000 signing bonus with a $200,000.

Running back Anthony Hankerson signed a FA deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Former Oregon State and Oregon kicker (does that make him a platypus?) Atticus Sappington accepted an invitation to rookie minicamp with the Minnesota Vikings, per a league source.

Beavs have a 3-1 lead not 2-1 and that’s game. 3-1 against a Hawaii team that has one of the top ERA pitching staffs in the country. Beavs finished with 3 hits but one of those was misplayed in the outfield leading to the 3rd run.

Announcers said they should have more info on Dax’s health on Tuesday.

Beavs #10 RPI and as long as they continue to win, I think they get the nod to get into a #8 slot regardless of their opponents RPI. National reputation and 3 titles will do that for a Blueblood program like OSU. Just keep winning and let the metrics do the rest. The Beavs have the 5th best record in the country at 33-9.

    • It will be less about what the beavs do and more about how other teams end the season, bad weekends by FSU, Florida, West Virginia and Virginia definitely help our case. Coastal continues to lose midweek games doesn’t hurt either. A&M and maybe Auburn should jump us in the national polls.

    • 3
      2

Do you honestly think the Beavs are a top 8 team this season?
Seems when we play decent competition we’re about a .500 team, but I have to admit I haven’t watched many full games this year.

  16. Ha!

“…Belichick and UNC general manager Michael Lombardi dubbed the Tar Heels’ program as the NFL’s “33rd team” with their day-to-day operations and development from their first day in Chapel Hill.

Everything we do here is predicated on building a pro team,” Lombardi said in February of 2025. “We consider ourselves the 33rd (NFL) team, ’cause everybody who’s involved in our program has had some form of aspect in pro football.'”

For the first time since 2016, the Tar Heels failed to have a single player selected with one of the 257 picks…

UNC finished as one of four ACC programs and one of 10 Power Four programs without a single player drafted. The Tar Heels entered the draft coming off back-to-back years of having a first-round pick, and had multiple players selected in four of the last five NFL drafts since 2020.”

  17. Eggers has a piece up on the spring game, a couple quotes and the link:
“Our run game wasn’t worth a plug nickel…We didn’t move the line of scrimmage at all.”
“Big people usually beat out little people. We have to get bigger so we’re not getting beat up or pushed around on Saturdays.”

Eggers disagrees with Shephards position on QB’s talking to the media (consider the source):
“I am doing the speaking for this football team,” the coach declared. “Right now at quarterback, I haven’t decided who is going to speak for our team. (The QBs) are speaking to the team throughout workouts, throughout practices. That is what they need to be focused on — how they are leading their peers. They are doing an outstanding job of doing that. The time to get up here and talk to you all will be determined when I make that decision.”

    https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/2026/a-look-at-the-beavers-spring-game-from-my-perspective-and-coach-sheps

    • meh, he just wants to get a story from the QBs or do in depth pieces. Not being able to talk to them limits his work. whatever

Seems like Shephard pushing the players pretty hard. We’ll see if that works. Players really need to buy in.

  18. Selections from OLive’s “10 takeaways from Spring Game:”

    1) “…(Murphy) is clearly the most physically talented quarterback on the roster, with the best arm talent, and his understanding of the offense is evident.

JaMarcus Shephard can drag things out until August 22, or later, to officially name Murphy the starter but it’s a formality. Houston is not going to be remotely caught off guard by the obvious.

    2) The offensive line is a glaring issue

Being down three likely starters has been a problem all spring for the offensive line, so Saturday was not an outlier. But it underscored how poor the group is as a whole and where the Beavers could absolutely still add during the offseason.

Simply put, even once a few starters get back on the field, depth is clearly an issue. “Run, Malik, Run!”

Newberry looks like #1 RB, Hatcher #2 (a bit surprising to me)…Skyler Jackson likely #3-4…All need to work on pass protection and catching the ball. “Ooops!”

    Depth at TE…

    Not at WR…

    Or Secondary…

LB is probably deepest group on D.

Going to be a long season. Anyone going to watch one of the highest paid rosters in colllege football – texas tech – play the Beavs in Reser next fall?

    • Related to Texas Tech-they won’t have the qb they thought they would have as he’s in rehab for gambling. I doubt he ever plays college football again. They will still stomp us without a qb. If it’s a nice day and tickets are cheap I’d go tailgate.

  19. Bazzana being called up to the show. Wednesday’s TB vs CLE is a game to watch. Rasmussen, Kwan and Bazzana in the same game. Too bad Melton is in the minors for TB.

  20. FWIW (not much) Way too early top 25 includes a few Beaver foes:

Beavers open @ Houston, have Texas-Tech at home, and are @ BSU in November:

    15. Texas Tech (12-2) (7) – After winning the Big 12 last year, Tech aims to take the next step and go deeper into the playoff after reeling in another top-rated recruiting and transfer class. The headliner is former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby, though his status is uncertain after the school announced he was seeking treatment for a gambling addition. Expected backup Will Hammond is recovering from an ACL injury and likely will not be ready for the start of the season. Defensively, the Red Raiders added three high-impact linemen. Overall, Tech has brought back 14 starters and added in several possible all-conference or even All-America transfers to again be the unquestioned preseason favorite in the Big 12.

    23. Houston (10-3) (23) – Houston is poised for a playoff run after jumping to 10 wins in coach Willie Fritz’s second season. Among the most experienced teams in the Big 12, the Cougars will build an offense around senior quarterback Connor Weigman, senior wide receiver Amare Thomas and Oregon running back transfer Mekhi Hughes. While the schedule includes road trips to Texas Tech and Utah, Houston misses both Arizona schools and Brigham Young.

    25. Boise State (9-5) (25) – Boise is the favorite in the reestablished Pac-12 and the safest pick coming out of the spring to be the best team coming out of the Group of Six. The offense brings back quarterback Maddux Madsen, running back Dylan Riley and three starters up front, though the receiver room will be almost entirely rebuilt around Southern University transfer Darren Morris, JUCO recruit Akeem Wright and a pair of true freshmen in Terrious Favors and Rasean Jones. The defense returns five starters but needs a makeover in the secondary.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2026/04/27/college-football-top-25-too-early-rankings/89626721007/

  21. Hearing some good rumors about NIL money for football. I understand we may see some solid adds to the roster potentially similar to what we’re seeing in basketball. I’m guessing it will mostly be for the 2027 roster given how late it is in the recruiting cycle. That said I wouldn’t be surprised to see the football team go after a player or two that can step in and start on the oline this fall or another impact player if there’s someone available.

    • Texas is very close to SEC country so that was a good win.

The best way to evaluate anything is to get a sense of how the SEC honks will need to interpret events to boost the SEC. Canham should look over all EC non-conference match-ups and play against any lesser schools that the SEC plays. No matter what you box them into boosting your RPI…

  22. Ranking all teams after spring ball. Yeah, a silly effort, but I think the perceptions are telling. Of course its mostly B10 and SEC then everyone else…

“As of now, the weakest teams in the Power Four are projected to be No. 106 Stanford, No. 107 Colorado, No. 111 Boston College and No. 112 Purdue.”

    BSU #23
    SDSU #48
    Fresno state #53
    WSU #84
    Utah State #90
    Texas State #104
    Colorado State #121
    Oregon State #122

So Oregon State steps down from a power conference, helps save the PAC, raids the Mtn West for teams, then is perceived as the weakest football team in the conference…somebody above hoped the PAC would get a national following, but I don’t see any reason for that. BSU has national name recognition as the scrappy underdog that punches above its weight every once in a while. WSU might have some recognition for its offenses, but that’s been a while.

Its striking how many schools formerly recognized as programs are now just mired in the middle (UCLA #81)…MSU (105), Stanford (106), COL (107)…Northwestern which will have Chip Kelly at OC and Aiden Chiles at QB are #101…

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2026/04/29/college-football-re-rank-spring-practice-ncaa-1-138/89824995007/

Year 1 is going to be brutal, BUT, we’ll see if there’s an increase in NIL, and how the Shepard grows his flock of Beavers by year 3. He needs linemen on both sides and a QB….

    • Colorado sure is getting it’s moneys worth for the contract they are paying Deion. When will there be a reset on coaching salaries……guys that have won nothing are getting new contracts paying them 10-12 mil a year.

      • Right?

NFL money for no meaningful results…I guess it happens in every pro sport though…I think CO knows it made mistakes (apparently even lowered academic standards so Coach Slime could recruit a broader pool of players) but just sort of doubles down on stupid.

        • “NFL money for no meaningful results” I had to research NFL salaries. I had now idea NFL coaches make as much as they do. 16-20 mil a year?! I get that winnings a superbowl is a huge deal and brings tons of money to a franchise but does a coach need that much to do that job of coaching a sport?! Obviously owners are willing to pay it. Could ticket prices to these events but much lower if owners were forced to keep spending to a certain level and have to keep prices for food, tickets, parking, etc at certain levels? It’s a turnoff for me.

Given that Morris started and Queen pitched too, I’m now wondering who will replace Dax if he’s unable to go this weekend. On the other hand, it could be that those two guys who were logical replacements for Dax is a signal that Fax will be ready to go but on a pitch count. I’m not sure who else on the staff could be the replacement for Dax unless you’re going with multiple pitchers by committee and then it shortens depth our of the bullpen.

No word yet about Dax’s availability or health for this weekend’s series but the beavers can’t afford to slip up tonight, brhia weekend or the rest of the season if they hope to get a national seed and at #8:now.

      • 1
        3

I thought about Kmatz but he’s been spotty at best and AJ, you’re right, could be a big problem. I also wonder if they will change the rotation with either Segura or EK as the Friday night guy if Dax can’t go? I don’t think that would be a very good plan but I guess we will find out soon enough. Maybe we get an update in tonight’s game?

    • Why would it? OSU wasn’t a part of that contract. And BPS got money from us which would have gone to Kyle in salary. The clause in OSU’s contract with BPS that allowed us to end the contract at any time was the risk BPS ran, and it was enacted. It’s their mess to deal with Kyle, now.

I guess they’re lucky they didn’t guarantee his salary on top of the purchase agreement. But I would be surprised if the sales contract wasn’t enforced.

        • Not really.

The contract is between BPS and Kyle. I’ll read it later, but speculation that OSU is any part of it will be only speculation. If there’s anything in the contract that includes OSU, it will be specifically written. If nothing is written, then it has nothing to do with us.

Contract law is about the contracts written. Kyle deserves that sale being enforced, unless there’s some out in it. I doubt there is, since his representation is using such bold language.

          • Agree, the current suit doesn’t involve OSU directly; so discovery in the case is unlikely to tarnish Barnes.
But, Barnes actions have been very questionable and another suit is possible. It’ll put heat on Barnes directly.
Per Kyle’s attorney: “Richardson said there is a possibility a second lawsuit will be filed against Oregon State under what she said was the “covenant of good faith and fair dealings” in its contract with Bjornstad to serve as athletic department GM.”

          • Yeah… um… no.

Richardson needs to read up on that clause before she takes all of Kyle’s money on that proposed suit. There are strict guidelines to what is good faith and fair dealings, and none of this falls under those.

Hard to believe we are about to have just 10 losses total and 7 of them are mid-week games. Assume the smaller NCAA baseball rosters this season has drastically affected our pitching depth because its awful.

  24. Beavs 3 hits in 4.2 innings, lets see how the new arm for UTRGV does, comes in with a 1-0 count to AJ, throws 3 balls to complete the bb. Two on two out.

  25. 1
    4

Wow, Rio Grande crushes a 2 run shot now lead 8-5. Kmatz looks like he’s done after the HR and a single. Zack edwards on relief.

  26. 9-5 b8 and the Beavs on the verge of dropping in the RPI to 15 or 16 according to the announcers. They risk losing out on a top 16 rpi too. Oh well….
    ..

  27. 4
    4

Well, I guess that if UCLA can lose two games in the last two weeks, one to SAC State and UCSB, it’s not too hard to believe the Beavs could lose tonight. The major difference is, UCLA could afford a loss or two but the Beavs couldn’t.

    • The said arm discomfort. Which always seems like what they call it right before they announce TJ surgery. Hopefully I’m just being an overly pessimistic Beaver fan… though that’s probably redundant could just say Beaver fan.

      • I watched the game and listened to the TV broadcast as Rowe and the other guy are excellent in the call of the game. Parker is great too but if I listen to his call, he is either a few seconds ahead or behind the TV broadcast so it kind of takes some of the drama out of watching.it on TV..

  28. Are there any articles about the Pac12 media deal that aren’t behind paywalls?
Saw Canzano teasing some news, but I’m not subscribing for rumors.

  29. So if the portal closes April 21 &22, how is it that I continue to read about players committing to new schools via the portal? How is that happening? Oregon MBB just received a new commit transfer.

  30. Hey NewPac12, you actually have 51 out of 151 comments on this thread alone. Wow, quite prolific. I actually wasted a few minutes counting just because I was curious.
Go Beavs, hope they can get a sweep this weekend.

    • Well, when you’re recovering from TKR, you don’t have too many options to distract from the pain and it’s brutally painful. Stupid car accident where a guy fell asleep at the wheel and came into my lane broadside.

      • Ah sorry to hear about the accident. I’ll leave you alone for all of the posts. Hope you are on the mend and able to fully recover from your injuries…

        • Thx, I appreciate. It rests your physical and mental toughness and trust me, I think I’m going mental at times. Have a good one

UCL surgery for Whitney. Worst case scenario as we won’t have him the rest of this year or next also. Projected to be the #1 pick in the draft so his Beaver career is unfortunately over. Such a same as I was really looking forward to him growing and getting even better next season also. tough break for him and hopefully he has a full recovery. They really tired to not overdo it with him this season also. Rare to be a great pitcher now without having at least one UCL surgery under your belt.

    • Damn.

Hope he heals quickly and correctly.

I was looking forward to seeing him in the post-season. Now I just hope he doesn’t end up in a lousy MLB system.

Anyone think he has the stats to still take awards for this season?

  32. 2
    1

Too bad. Hope he can recover and get to the big leagues, even if he can’t lead the Beavs to another national title. It was a great privilege to have watched him pitch as a Beav though.

  33. Very unfortunate news about Whitney but looking back, it should have been expected when he walked off the mound immediately. Rarely hear about shoulder injuries these days and a forearm issue is usually related to guys throwing splitters and he doesn’t have one. The rapid increase in velo got to him vs overuse.

Timeline for recovery depends on the type of UCL surgery he gets. If he gets the UCL internal brace surgery, the timeline is accelerated. Could return for next season. This is only if the ligament is not completely torn.

Otherwise, its the 12-18 month recovery.

Can someone please give Coleman from CSUN a Beavs NIL deal. He looks like Ken Griffey Jr. playing tonight at Goss. And please stop pitching to that kid.

Sucks about Dax. This team was a super regional team at best with him.

They’re a regional team at best without him.

Enjoy whatever is left of this last 5-6 weeks of the season.

Things will look very different next year. Could be good or bad

  36. 7

Baseball is the only successful major sport OSU has left. Now the Beavers appear to be spiraling down at the worst time. Hopefully this team can rally, find the next man up, leaders can emerge and help lead this team going forward. It would be great to host a regional!

About football; this is the smallest Beaver football team I have seen in the past 3-4 decades! They look like a high school team. They at least better be fast, you don’t want to be small and slow in football. I like the passion and energy from the coaching staff but it reminds me a little bit of the Gary Andersen era, it’s only talk at this point. I think the ceiling is winning 5 games at best this season, they appear to be outmatched physically with most of the teams on their schedule. I’m also hearing that the offensive line is a glaring issue and weakness, and it hasn’t been resolved, that’s not good.

    • I hope and pray it’s not that bad. Those first two seasons of the Anderpants era had some of the slowest Power 5 football players I have ever seen. Opponents would run simple stretch plays that looked like 2-3-yard gains; the RB would just outrun the defense for an easy 20-yard gain.

    • 1
      1

The team will probably be fortunate to win 3 games. The OLine was bad in the scrimmage, no quality, healthy depth along the lines, and proven QB (who will be getting hit a lot).

I think there’s a risk Shepard’s high energy verbosity wears thin, and hope players don’t start tuning him out.

IF they can get some NIL going, Shepard should probably be judged in about 3 years.

    • In regards to football I think Shephard will need some time to get guys. Sounds like he is a very good recruiter. I like how he didn’t mince words about the offensive line. Andersen didn’t seem to say stuff like that when he was around and his staff was poor outside of Sitake. I also think having MacIntyre will be huge for us.

  37. 4
    1

Beav in Beaverton is on to something. We have seen multiple guys from Hawaii, UT Rio Grande and now CSUM that seem like they are dominant compared to OSU for some reason. Pick the 5-6 guys you couldn’t hit or couldn’t get out and work on some NIL deals for those guys. Goodness Mike Parker has been speechless watching some of these games.

    • 3
      3

I agree. These essentially mid major kids just hit the heck out of the ball and took our best pitchers in some case behind the woodshed. That freshman last night would be one of the first players I’d pursue.

    • They have some good offensive players coming in from high school next year including the best player from my Alma mater South Salem!

  38. 3
    1

Vazquez an RBI double to walk off in 11. 6-5 Beavs.

RPI 17. Beavs 35-11 record is better than: Auburn, Bama, Fla State, S.Miss, USC, Ol Miss, Coastal, Oklahoma, and Florida. All who have better RPI’s.

    • Their best chance is to steal a super regional seed from USC as one of probably just 3 West seeds. I expect about 12 top 16 seeds for SEC schools just based on past years so only a few up for grabs after the first layer of fraud is in place for SEC home field advantages in multiple regionals.

      Gutsy win today!!

      • Interesting speculation there. Three West Coast teams…..UCLA a lock, then the next three, by RPI, look like USC, Beavs, and (what?) nike.
USC strentgh of sched close to Beavs, but they have a brand new stadium.
nike SOS way worse than Beavs, but they have phil.

Bottom line there is no guarantee we’ll see three from the West; if we do it ought to be UCLA, then the Beavs and then USC.

“first layer of fraud”……love it! ohio speaks TRUTH.

And, yes, gutsy win…..imagine how good this team could be if more than 2-3 guys were totally “on” their game.

  39. According to Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham, the future of college football appears to be going to a place where a $50 million roster is less of an outlier and more the norm. In a recent interview with On3, Whittingham predicted that as many as 12-15 schools will have rosters costing more than $50 million per year from now on.

However, is that sustainable? The Wolverines’ head man says no.

There are a few schools that can weather that, but not many,” Whittingham said to On3. “So it’s already unsustainable for most schools and is only going to get more so until we come up with a model that provides some guardrails and works for everyone.”

  40. Difficult, for me anyway, college sports is not good to follow or watch with the past college conference team changes and NIL money. The only thing that espn and other media only care about SEC and Big 10. There basically semi-pro sports programs. ESPN only shows SEC sports programs.

    • It is funny how ESPN app only shows information on SEC teams as far as interviews, highlights for baseball. You really have to dig to find any basic information that might reveal there are a lot of schools outside of the SEC that actually play baseball. Self promotion in disguise as sports news coverage, seems like a form of monopolization. ESPN buys the CWWS coverage &owns the rights, is the exclusive broadcaster for the Omaha, also has a contract with the SEC as the exclusive broadcaster for their games. ESPN has a clear conflict of interest by owning SEC rights and Omaha/Football Playoff rights. They need to get ratings, but they also need to feature SEC teams, so they rig the system each year by claiming that it just means more to SEC teams, justify their coverage as if it is non biased.

Beavs back in at #16 RPI. The RPI ranking is about as volatile as the global oil market right now. Get the win today and we will see where the dart lands today.

As I expected after the midweek game and the first two this weekend, Trey Morris gets the start today. I guess it was by default bc the beavers didn’t have many options although Trey Morris is very good and of he’s on today, the Beavs will win…

Vazquez went 3 for 5 with the walk-off RBI double that scored AJ Singer from first to send the No. 6 Beavers to a 6-5 win in 11 innings in front of 4,103 at Goss Stadium Saturday afternoon.

“It was an everybody effort right there,” Oregon State coach Mitch Canham said. “Trying to bunt, trying to swing, we’re trying to do a little bit of everything — fake bunt steal. I did appreciate the energy with which they went about their business today.”

Nice crowd, sounds like an entertaining game.

And at the most critical juncture of the game, CBS switched to the news and I wasn’t able to see the walk off but did see the replay. You watch a game for 3+ hours and they shut it down….yes I know it was on streaming but I was at a restaurant where the signal was horrible and couldn’t get it on my phone. I guess CBS should stand for Crappy Broadcast System..

Nice outcome winning two in a row. UofP up next and we know they’ll be highly motivated to beat the Beavs again. I don’t know who starts but maybe Queen?

  46. “The Big Ten Conference has announced a record $1.37 billion distribution to its 18 conference-member institutions for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.

The largest distribution in conference history represents a $490 million increase compared with the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, when the conference distributed $883 million.”

Apparently Oregon’s share was nearly $49M….not sure how well balanced is their AD budget….

  47. I’m certain that Big10 money is already spent or accounted for. The problem will be when the tide goes out, and it will at some point.

  48. Pac12 needs to tair some notes from the Savannah Bananas marketing team. They were able to pull a crowd of over 100k to watch Banana Ball this weekend at the Texas A&M football stadium.
How do you convince people it’s worth their time trying to watch a baseball game from the opposite end of a stadium that size?

Three baseball polls still have OSU #10, 8 and 7. Btw, I saw a lead in to an article on a paywall site, the Beavs are closing in on a key 2027 football recruit but no details unless you want to pay for access to the site.

Back to the discussion of possible three host teams in the west; D1 is out with their latest “Field of 64 Projection”.
Of course UCLA is there. Beavs host as well, and believe it or not, nike too!

How these experts put nike (RPI 27/SOS 99) above the spoiled children (RPI 10/SOS 39) is hard to understand.
Is it just phil? Can someone explain?
And SC to Tuscaloosa to boot!

Perhaps D1 is just messin’ with us all……..it is only a “projection” after all!

    • Projections move quite a bit week to week.
3 weeks ago Beavs were a 7 seed, last week a 10 seed, this week a 15 seed.

As far as top 8 seeds (current projection)
      SEC (4)
      BIG (1)
      Big12 (1)
      ACC (2)

  52. Geez, the Beavs just don’t want to host a regional. Pilots just took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, 4-3, and they might not be done. Bases loaded one out.

The Twitter recruiting feature has been removed since Twitter chose to block that feature for third party sites.

    • Recruiting is no longer a point of emphasis nor is it interesting to follow anyway.
The big day has become free agent signing day from the portal instead of high school signing day.
And the Beavs are the forgotten ones anyway, shunned and left for dead in the vast landscape of conference realignment.

Last chance for the Beavs to make RPI gains this weekend. Then can’t lose at home the rest of the way. So must win the rest of the games to keep at top 16 rpi. Should be enough to get a host bid. Oregon all but guaranteed to end up the Corvallis regional if the Beavs host.

“Oregon all but guaranteed to end up the Corvallis regional if the Beavs host.”
I’m usually in lockstep with ya, Bill, but hard to agree on this one. What’s yer logic?

      • Three projected west coast hosts,

UCLA, USC and OSU. Beavs outside the top 8 and on the edge of falling out of the top 16. Oregon is solidly a two seed. They can’t go to UCLA or USC for regionals and the committee will reduce travel when they can. Oregon looking like a solid 2 seed which makes sense to pair them vs a high top 16 seed in OSU.

last year’s west coasts hosts and participants – All but TCU were short flights away and the committee has no issue pairing old conference rivals.
Beavs – St Mary’s, USC and TCU
Oregon – Utah Valley, Cal Poly and Arizona
UCLA – ASU, UC Irvine, Fresno St

        2024 tournament –
Beavs – Tulane, Nicholls and UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara – Oregon, Fresno St, San Diego (Oregon was still in PAC12)

        • Good points for sure. Thanks.
Interesting to consider that Oregon moving to the B10 showed little concern for travel while the committee considers travel for the tourney. Is travel more important when thinking of smaller schools……like many which will be participating?

  58. Nice to see Krieg get a couple RBI’s with two down in the t9 to make it an 8-1 game, on to the b9.
Haven’t heard a lot from Krieg lately, be nice to see him come around now.

  59. Singer a 2 RBI HR makes it 3-2 Beavs. Sounds like some personality there as he commemorates his slip up rounding 2b earlier. Gotta love that kid, a real baller.

  60. RPI and rankings won’t be very similar.
I think Coastal and Kansas both lost 2/3 this weekend and the Beavs could jump up in rankings. If they can get to top 8 in rankings and still be around 15 RPI maybe they get the nod from the committee after all?

  61. 2

Duckies blow a 6-1 lead and lose to the bruins 9-6. Oregon hosts USC next weekend and their opportunity to host took a hot today.

    • 2
      3

ducks improved their RPI by 8 this week, now stand at 19, that’s after droping 2/3 on the road to #1.
Beavs latest spot is 16. RPI bounces around, lets see what Monday’s rankings bring…FWIW.

      • Still #16 so the chance to host looking iffy now especially playing UofP and AF so win out and let’s see how things stack up. Going 44-11 and ranked in the top 10 would be tough outcome if they’re not on the top 16, but the loss to Rio Grande was a killer.

    • I think likely. I’m not sure if it is officially supposed to factor in but it has to play in the minds of the committee a bit

  62. 16th in rpi after today. Gotta win these last 4 to feel safe about hosting a regional.

Being a top 8 national seed is most likely out of the question

    • Yeah no chance being a top 8. Zero! We need to win out and hope for some upsets this weekend and in the conference tournaments to just improve on the 16 spot we currently hold.

  63. Damn! We have a 4-0 week and drop to #16 in RPI. Ducks lose 2 out of 3 to #1 UCLA and climb 8 in RPI to hold the #19 spot. I guess strength of schedule is more important than winning. Good chance they pass us this week playing another ranked team and we play a horrible RPI team in Air Force.

    • You can only win the games on the schedule. Beaver baseball is going to be facing the same issues as a good quad 3 school in MBB. No one will schedule them.
So the circular logic mystery of strength of schedule can still be pointed at by average SEC teams as the only reason they should get post season oppoprtunities.
Look who we played and lost to…we deserve a spot over those lesser teams with twice the wins…

Still hoping for a shocking benefit of the doubt for the Beavs. I figured 10 losses max was the line they couldn’t cross, but they are still in the top 10 rankings and not many teams out west to seed so I have some slim hope.

      • OB, I completely agree and I think the Beavs national pedigree could be a factor if they win out and finish sh in the top 10 polls. These four games allow zero margin for error. I don’t know who we throw vs UofP tomorrow night but UofP as of late gives the Beavs fits.

  64. With the exception of out pathetic mid-week record, we have dominated the weekends. I believe we are 1 of only 3 teams that hasn’t lost a weekend series all year. That is really unbelievable actually. It is us, UCLA and I forget the 3rd.

  65. Fitt said on Joe beaver, Beavs are a lock to host if they win out, might be a nat seed depending on how things shake out

  66. Here is my best argument for the Beavs getting the 8th national seed:
    1) If they win out, they will have at least the 5th best win/loss record in the country.
    2) If they win out, they will still be a top 10 team
    3) The lack of strong teams makes it likely that at least 2 top west coast teams get a top 8 seed just for map balance and PR for the committee.
    4) UCLA is a lock for the #1 seed but USC/Oregon aren’t getting the Big10 multiple top 8 bids
    5) There are 9 Ranked SEC schools all bunched up with at least 12 losses and some up to 17, which will make it challenging for the committee to lean heavy to the SEC this year
    6) ACC has 2 in the top 5 but only one other contender, very top heavy, hence 2-3 dominant teams beat everyone else.
    7) Beavs are a national brand in Baseball and not many will question if they get the benefit of the doubt for the 8th seed and another shot to host both rounds of the postseason
    8) Goss Stadium looks great and plays well in June on ESPN especially when they have rain delays and lightning delays all over the southeast and the Midwest.
    9) Beavs do boast one of the best pitching staffs in the nation by the numbers.
    10) Lack of series losses or multiple game losses all year make a good case for the Beavs not just feasting on a weak schedule for stretches.
    11) The 2 worst losses came within a week of the team learning Dax was done, and the accident.
    12) Midweek losses account for over half of the losses, less likely to be punished for that in seeding, I hope
    13) The Beavs also have one of the best defensive fielding teams by the numbers.
    14) The committee didn’t emphasize RPI as much last year and the Beavs got to Omaha, along with a few other surprise teams. Maybe they continue the trend away from heavy RPI emphasis again
    15) All Big12 schools except WVU have 15 or more losses which makes it less likely any of them get a top 8 seed.

Arguments that look bad for OSU:
    1) Not in a conference
    2) Best pitcher in college baseball is out for the year
    3) RPI isn’t top 10
    4) Key losses to Oregon, UW, UTRio Grande will be killers
    5) SEC bias pushes undeserving SEC schools up in both seedings and the rankings
    6) Committee would rather make teams out west travel east than send multiple eastern teams west.
    7) ESPN prefers SEC stadiums for postseason play
    8) Committee leans too heavily on RPI and sinks the Beavs

Summary, I think Beavs can get a top 16 seed pretty comfortably if they win out. I actually think they have a good shot at the last national seed at 8 too.
Dax getting hurt and the accident, I think rattled the locker room for about a 2 week stretch and they have recovered. Now the question is will it be enough?

My guess for the top 8:
    UCLA 1
    G Tech 2
    Georgia 3
    NC 4
    Auburn 5
    WVU 6
    Texas 7
    Oregon State 8

Go Beavs! Just win the rest of them and it might happen.

    • Good stuff, ohio.
The positives #7 and 8 are solid, but I wonder if #9 and 13 (defense and pitching) are as attractive as they used to be; seems many still favor only the long ball.

Just win. Note Portland’s RPI is 118 and AF is 159; both much better than Long Beach’s 245

Here’s what Kendall Rogers says today: “I think Oregon State is hosting if it stays in the Top 20 in the RPI. The committee is well aware of the Beavers’ scheduling challenges, and this is a classic situation where the human polls REALLY help the Beavers. That would mean OSU is a Top 10 team in every human ranking — but yet, is not hosting. I just don’t think that happens — with or without Dax Whitney.”

    • Number 14 just isn’t true, OSU ended up being a top 8 RPI last year. They found a loophole in the RPI formula that allowed them to compile a strong RPI based on a beating good to average teams on the road that resulted in a significant number of Q1 and Q2 wins. Example Hawaii, Nebraska, and Xavier were all Q1 games. Most of the neutral site games if they were at home would have been Q3 vs Q2, Cal State Fullerton at RPI 112 was a Q2 win. The home/away schedule normalized this year is why the RPI is so much lower than last year even with fewer losses.

You are missing to 2 biggest Cons, SOS (currently 60) and lack of Q1 wins (only 3). Yes, those are components of RPI but you are hoping that the don’t rely heavily on RPI which metrics do you point to that help the OSU?

    • I think 6 teams are pretty locked into national seeds, your top 5 plus Texas.

Two weeks ago I thought 4 teams were fighting for the last 2 spots, A&M, Coastal, Kansas and ORST, but all 4 have had a rough last 2 weeks.

Coastal and Oregon State are both out of the national host in my opinion. WVU you had at 6, I think that is a stretch with a lower RPI and SOS than ORST, but if win B12 regular/conference tournament, maybe.

I think all of these teams host and have a better path to top 8 than Oregon State. I think Oregon state if they win out is a 13-16 range

A&M has a shot with a series win over Miss St and a good showing in the SEC Tournament.
Kansas still controls its destiny in the B12 regular season and winning the conference tournament still has an outside shot.
FSU – top 8 RPI top 5 SOS, win v Miami and a strong ACC tournament.
Miss St – win series vs A&M and strong SEC tournament top 12 RPI and top 8 SOS.
Bama – win Ole Miss series and strong SEC tournament top 6 RPI and top 4 SOS.
Southen Miss – Outside shot with RPI in top 10 and top 15 SOS, beat Coastal in the conference tournament
Florida – sweep LSU and SEC tournament and they have shot as well.

  67. 1
    5

Beavs drop to #17 in RPI after beating UofP. I’m pretty certain that means a national seed is certainly out of the question and hosting a regional is in jeopardy even if they sweep the flyboys.

  68. Another win and another drop in RPI. Down to #17. No wonder Oregon and others canceled recent midweek games against Grand Canyon and whoever. Seems like there might be a flaw in the system. Based on the recent trend we could sweep AF and end up around 20.

    • The only difference between this year and last year when we had a top 8 RPI is we have 3 bad loses and we didn’t have the same unbalanced home/away schedule. Last year our Average RPI against in Wins (regular season) was 111, this year it is 113. Average RPI in loses was 35, this year is 81. I’ve mention this before what last year we got really lucky because at lot fringe Q1/Q2 games ended up being Q1 (Xavier and Hawaii), This year those games we at home so they are Q2/Q3 (Mercer and Xavier)

  69. The flaw is they are starting on the assumptions that SEC teams 1-16 are superior to all other teams and everyone has to prove they are better than the 16th place SEC team in order to gain in RPI or SOS.
It is a purely subjective and quite skewed starting point directly traced to ESPN contracts.

      • Kendall Rogers and a few other vocal journalist/pundits were banging the drum of anti-RPI last year as a way to promote the general good of the game since it is so difficult for teams to gain in RPI over the course of most schedules.
I think it will be a replay of that same drumbeat this year. No way the SEC deserves 5 of 8 national seeds or 11 of 18 overall seeds, when none of them are under 10 losses. The argument will be how tough the conference is week to week, of course, since they always push that myth.
The old PAC12 had the same issues with several teams ending up good not great, but it somehow always meant the league was down and not as good as it could be.
The starting point assumptions are exposed as propaganda in those cases. I despise it because it negates the actual outcomes, and teams like Oregon or LSU are now rewarded for conference losses but schools from other conferences are punished for conference wins.

  70. SEC schools in RPI
    2 Auburn 35-16
    4 Texas 37-12
    6 Alabama 35-17
    10 Texas A&M 37-12
    11 Miss St 38-14
    12 Florida 34-18
    13 Ole Miss 35-18
    15 Georgia 41-11
    19 Oklahoma 31-18. 13-14 conference record

SOS and RPI are interlinked in an absurd circular logic puzzle of justifying one by the other. In what world does an 18 loss team with a sub-.500 conference record deserve to be considered as a home regional site? Oklahoma is waiting for any team above them to get upset in conference tourneys and they can start griping about how they were robbed of a regional host opportunity.
And somehow SEC deserves to host 9 out of 16 host regionals? Insanity, all other conferences should not be happy being part of that every year. ESPN controls a lot more than we realize, behind closed doors.

    • RPI is just a math equation. Anyone who wants to put out the effort can prove or disprove the SEC numbers. Claude could probably calculate it pretty quickly. I feel like the only factor that could be subjective is whether or not a game was played at a neutral site.

      • They can change up the RPI weighting to not favor power conferences loading up on cupcakes at home early in the year. 50% is based on the win/loss record with away wins worth more, 25% based on opponents record and 25% based on opponent’s opponent record (essentially SOS). They win all the early games and if they go 500 in conf play, basically cancels out the negatives.

Increase away wins worth, decrease home win’s worth, increase the weight of opponents record and decrease the opponent’s SOS. So home wins vs cupcakes early in the season don’t count much. Reward teams for going on the road. Power conf teams might start challenging each other more in non conf series or neutral site tournaments resulting in more losses. Beavs have been doing this for years to game the RPI system.

        • If you look at the RPI value scores the gap between UCLA and number two is larger than ORST at 17 and USC at 8 0.0132 vs .0126. All these teams are extremely close and the small things matter. We are number 8 in the RPI if we didn’t have 3 bad losses at home.

          • A&M loses to MSST (RPI 11) and drops from 10 to 15. This group is packed in tight. I’m not sure we have the schedule to move up but expect a lot of movement between 8-17 through out tournament play, ever loss matters.

    • OhioBeav, where are the Big 10 teams like Oregon And USC in the RPI rankings? What a joke all of the sec teams in the RPI rankings but not surprised as to what ESPN is wanting.

  71. Ethan makes it through 5 on a nice 6-4-3 DP, gotta figure Dorman was considering pulling him when he passed 85 pitches. Ended with 88, doubt he comes out for the 6th.
    6-2 Beavs, b5
Talt and Singer a little quiet so far.

  72. Quacks have emergency budget problem. Next year’s enrollment numbers are in. Revenue going down $65 mil due to declining numbers of out of state students (Californians no longer want to go there). Quack Prez says they are now at a crossroads.

I don’t understand though. Why not just ask Uncle Phil for some more cash? Can’t Nike just cover it?

    https://president.uoregon.edu/news-uo-budget-and-road-ahead

    • Nice to know that the Beavs cut ties with that sinking ship a few years ago. Once the money dries up, how long until their football program officially departs from the school and becomes a semi-pro Nike farm team?

      • 1
        2

That will happen in the next realignment circus where 60+,teams from the B10, SEC and B12 create their NFL minor league system with exclusive media rights with the NFL, or at least that’s the speculation.

    • They’re going to “elevate and invest in research strengths that can meet the needs of our communities and industry, attract the best talent” by implementing a hiring and pay freeze?

  73. Watching the Indians game and Bazzana is so good. Popped up in the infield but it was like a 12 pitch at bat working the starter. I guess the advanced stats and exit velocity are pretty good too but I am not that into that stuff. People are saying the average and slugging will go up.
