    There’s a lot of talk today about the upcoming OSU vs Texas Tech game. Daschell and the O think that OSU should cancel the game unless their rotten QB is suspended for the year. It is a sound moral argument, but a piss poor financial argument. There’s a million dollar buyout clause and millions in tv, ticket and concessions to surrender with such a move. Unless some other big 4 conference opponent arranges to step into the void with us and arrange to make the trip to Corvallis in September… it ain’t going to happen.

        Easy for Daschel to say. And since the Heimlich controversy, when did we think following the Oregonian’s lead was the right thing to do? Since Texas Tech is threatening to sue the Big XII if the conference takes any steps to penalize them, instead of cancelling the game in Corvallis we should extend them an invitation to the Pac 12.

      Ball control, a balanced offense, no TOs, playing penalty free, will be key.

    Josiah McKee, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive tackle, committed to the Beavers on Fri. He took an official visit to Corvallis last weekend and chose OSU over offers from Memphis, Southern Miss and James Madison.

      Man this one hurts a lot. I know a lot on here didn’t like him but when you look at the pitchers stats from when he was here is it was pretty remarkable. Team ERA was always around the top in the nation and sometimes the very top, walks were always low, HRs allowed always low and strikeouts were always high. He knew what he was doing with pitchers and was very good at fine tuning talents. He will very hard to replace as a coach and recruiter. I hope I am wrong but I bet Trey Morris enters the Portal in a day or two. Hopefully the recruits are officially signed but I don’t think that really matters anymore as they can still enter the portal before they step on campus. The think that hurts and makes me think is that this is a lateral move. Don’t really understand it.

        -10 Unique All American Pitchers (3 in 2026)

        OSU led nation in ERA, H/9 and WHIP in 2026, ranked 2nd in K-to-BB ratio and 3rd in K/9.

        Like I said….hard to replace.

      I’m hoping he’s getting seriously paid and it isn’t just a decent bump. That Florida HC is a major a-hole. Dorman will earn every dollar. I wonder if Sullivan will let him call pitches, he didn’t let the previous pitching coach do it.

    There shouldn’t be a shortage of candidates for the pitching coach role and any up and coming coach will want the job. Kind of crazy that since 2004 there have only been three pitching coaches at OSU. Spencer, Yeskie and Dorman.

    I’d guess it is Andrew Moore’s job if he wants it. He is currently assistant pitching coach for the Cleveland Guardians Triple A team in Columbus, Ohio.
    He has lots of family in Oregon and I bet he has already talked to Mitch today.

    Maybe Gundy is another option but I’d figure it will be Moore. He was an actual pitcher, and would bring an entirely different approach to the OSU staff. Maybe a good thing to shift away from a staff of big arms to a mix of guys who all understand location, changing speed, and have great control. I’d prefer that to guys always trying to throw the ball through a wall as hard as they can.

    The WSU starter made it look pretty effortless with a 91mph fastball, and a lot of methodical pitching to spots, changing speed, throwing strikes.

      You need both. Power pitching and control pitching. Nice combo 9ver a weekend to keep the opposing teams from getting settled in. Think Randy Johnson on Friday night and Jamie Moyer on Saturday.

        Yes that is the point. Dorman had an entire pitching roster of the same guy. It never occurs to him that the kryptonite to last year’s team was every team’s average starter who only threw off-speed stuff? When the plan is 100mph and Ks, you can’t deviate to off-speed pitching to contact appparently.
        I think Dorman was very comfortable calling a game of fastball in, fastball out, fastball up, fastball down. And just expecting the guys to throw themselves out of jambs rather than learning how to pitch.
        If Dax wasn’t hurt, I’d bet that Dorman would have stayed for next year. This is a good thing for OSU. Dorman was a good coach, but I’m glad to see the analytics driven approach to hitting and pitching end.

        Beavs need to lean to more competitive heart than simple data analytics for the types of players they bring into the program.

          Hopefully you are right about this bring a good thing. Just hard for me to see right now but I’ll keep an open mind for sure. I do believe Beaver Baseball is a destination for players and coaches which I can’t really say about football or basketball yet. Maybe Women’s BB a bit but not like the likes of UCONN or LSU.
          We do need some bats that are game changers that teams are scared to pitch too also. Busy and important off-season ahead.

    If everyone in Oregon would move to Miami Florida….not Miami Ohio, then the State of Oregon could become a National Park…the Gators and Pythons and Sharks would love some Beaver and Duck. But whatever you do, don’t move to Miami Ohio….they have more Beaver and Duck than they can deal with right now.

    It is pretty insane how Texas Tech is refusing to acknowledge the absurdity of their role in the Sorsby situation. He is a confessed gambling addict with a real and extensive track record of gambling and placing bets in various versions of impersonation and self-incrimination.

    The TT admin is all about defending his character, absolving themselves from any oversight by the Big12, and basically threatening lawsuits to push any further rulings until next year, which would conveniently be after the season ends.

    The irony is that ESPN and their pundits are all using this topic as a launching pad to attack TT (an unwanted and unwelcome entry into the NIL football sweepstakes), and simultaneously opine about the lack of integrity within collegiate sports due to TT actions. ESPN is laughable and grandstanding to redirect the pressure to the Universities. It has been those in the backrooms/boardrooms of ESPN that have attacked the integrity of collegiate athletics. TT may just be pushing ot make a point and show the hypocrisy of it all.

    I wondered if TT may just bench Sorsby as a stand against gambling, but they are almost being prodded to resist the mob and play him no matter what. I wonder if Sorsby makes it through the year without some team taking a cheap shot and “sweeping the leg” so to speak.

      Its a pretty ridulous story to follow and almost unbelievable. Their stand is all a product of today’s issues in college sports with NIL, the transfer portal and doing everything you can to make the college football playoffs. If he was a 3rd string QB he would be off the team and banned from college football and probably professional football. But he was the #1 QB in the portal and they paid $5 million to get him on campus to be the next great Texas Tech QB. Lawsuits filed, injunctions given for the overall health and well being of a student athlete. Biggest Joke I have ever seen in sports.

        At this point whats stopping a school from bringing back a player that was in the NFL? The NCAA is obviously powerless to stop whats going on. Just threaten to sue or do take them to court. Then get an injunction from a favorable judge so he can play while its tied up in court.

        Hell, you could field an entire roster of former nfl players and win the CFP

    Garden so “storied?” I get the Garden’s rep as a facility. But it Seems like they’ve massively underachieved in a market they could easily attract free agents. The Spurs have a much more successful history than the Knicks.

    Is it because there were a number of “almost” years in eastern conference playoffs or something?

    I watched the video of Jade Carey’s commencement address yesterday. She’s been one of the few bright spots for OSU since COVID. Fully dedicated to the school and a great representative of the university. She’ll be missed.

    Well crap. I called it the day the Dorman news broke but Trey Morris entered the transfer Portal today. He also has a “do not contact” tag applied so he knows where he is going. I assume Florida but he might not want to go that far. Rumors are maybe Oregon. Just sucks because he had a really good chance to be our Friday or Saturday starter next season. Not sure we have any weekend starters on the roster right now. Damn I miss being in a power conference. All we have is baseball and it is getting harder and harder to put together a tough schedule that the kids want to play.

      Yep, I thought the exact same thing as you after reading about Dorman. If he ended up at Oregon, that would be added insult to him leaving. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in the SEC bc they can offer him big money.

      Well I guess it isn’t just a lack of power 4 conference and OSU issue because the Ducks super star freshman outfielder entered the Portal today also. He will be a 1st round pick in a couple of years when eligible. NCAA sports just suck and is highly broken.

      It’s a pro sport with annual free agency and no salary cap…anyone who risks injury is likely to take the biggest bag of cash they can. Hard to fault them, and if they actually invest it they might do ok in the longer term.

    Ok, TT may have become the most shameless, gross program in NCAA football, and that’s saying something:

    Texas Tech mega booster Cody Campbell to OutKick: “Nobody boycotted Penn State a few years ago when that horrible situation happened there, you know?”

    The NCAA dropped the hammer, including a $60 million fine and a multi-year postseason ban. Penn State accepted the sanctions and did not appeal.

    The situations are incomparable.

    Penn State cleaned house at the highest levels of the university administration and within the football program, including firing Joe Paterno.

    NCAA sanctions were applied, and not voided by a judge.

    Campbell: “The college football world doesn’t think Texas Tech should be as good as we are. We’ve been a disruptor… and so we’re a target.”

    (head coach) McGuire: “As a society, we’ve been OK with other things that happen and allowing players to play, and this has been the one thing that has united people that we’re against, you know? It’s crazy, because it’s not murder.”

    ? University president Lawrence Schovanec: “Mistakes have consequences. At the same time, here’s a young man with a dream and a vision to pursue a career.”

    Schovanec: “I think we have to recognize the (NCAA) rules in place now were made long before there were millions of young people walking around with a legal gambling apparatus in their pocket.”

    Geezus. I hope the Shepard and his flock of Beavers defy all odds and upset these glory hole cocksuckers.

      So what are the chances TTech still finds a blue chip transfer QB somehow even though the portal has closed and the only players available are guys passed up by other programs in the Sprimg?
      I could see a guy like Raiola getting some pressure to leave his backup spot at oregon to become the immediate starter for Tech.
      In fact, I’d love to see that happen.

    Oregon State incoming freshman voted Max Baseball POTY in Oregon:

    Grady Saunders, Thurston (Springfield)
    6-2 | 185 | Pitcher | Senior
    Considered the top pitching prospect in the state by Perfect Game, Saunders also had a huge year at the plate for the Class 5A runner-up. He batted .531 with 32 RBI, 23 runs, 14 doubles, four triples and four home runs. On the mound he posted a 7-3 record with 84 strikeouts and a 1.89 ERA in 59.1 innings.

    Beavers added has added a top in-state prospects to its 2027 recruiting class.

    Kawai Chamberlin, a three-star linebacker out of Willamette High, committed to the Beavers on Tuesday. He took an official visit to Corvallis last month and chose OSU over offers from Minnesota, Boise State and San Diego State, among others.

    The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Chamberlin is the No. 5 player in Oregon in the 247Sports Composite, the highest-ranked in-state commit for the Beavers since Damir Collins was No. 3 among in-state players in 2021.

    Chamberlin had 103 Tackles (15 for loss) with two interceptions and one pass breakup as a junior at Willamette, where he also plays tight end. He had 16 catches for 218 yards and four touchdowns

    Chamberlin joins Teave Brown and Brody Downs as linebackers committed to OSU and is the eighth commitment to its class. The group is ranked 79th overall and seventh in the Pac-12 in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

      Even worse is the wide ranging discussion of where he fits on NFL rosters, as if turning pro will make his betting temptations much less. Why would any NFL team be allowed to draft or sign him anymore than college teams? Pete Rose was painted as a villain for decades for far less.
      Think about the amount of bets Sorsby has admitted placing over a 4 year period: $90,000 dollars on 9,000 bets in various sums and sports. SO break it down a bit more, 4yrs=1460 days/9,000 bets= roughly 6 bets per day over a 4 year span. But sure, he is done gambling and a legit NFL qb… ESPN talking heads have had their pound of flesh by tearing into Texas Tech for about a 2 week period, now they get to turn the page and act like he isn’t the same integrity issue in an NFL uniform they were making him out to be for college.

      Why was Pete Rose facing a lifetime ban from MLB? How is this not an immediate lifetime ban for Sorsby as well? Same problems, same concerns, same impact upon the game and yet here we are, pretending he is so much better after a 3 week recovery program and worthy of an NFL roster spot. Crazy.

      The kid made his choices for a long period of time, it wasn’t a one-off mistake. It was a well established pattern of behavior that he lived and lied about for a long time. Nobody “deserves” a chance to keep playing and avoiding severe consequences for a long series of bad decisions that are detrimental to the sport he intended to make a living playing. So insane to hear the cognitive dissonance around this guy. He wasn’t a great qb, but somehow he is being pushed onto teams like they would be passing up John Elway in a supplemental draft. Any NFL front office that actually drafts him, deserves the drama and controversy tht will surely follow. I predict it will be the Cowboys just because Jerry can’t help himself.

    MLB latest proposal for the draft eliminates HS seniors from being draft eligible, but lowers the draft eligible age from 21 to 20 for college players.

    OSU in head to head recruiting, I mean NIL money grab with Michigan for QB and decision time coming soon. I’ve forgotten the kid’s name but if is a kid Michigan wants, he must be pretty good although Kyle wittingham isn’t really known for producing high caliber QBs. The question is who can offer more money? My bet is on Michigan…..

      Ben Cushnie, LH, pitched 21 innings with 13:strikeouts,vso not a huge sample size but adds needed lefty to the staff. I would hope the mitch announces new pitching coach soon before all of the quality pitchers sign with other schools.

        Well, he has had success in the Cleveland Guardian organization as an assistant pitching coach and knows what it takes for kids to be effective at that level so I would say an emphatic yes to your question

        Seems light on coaching experience, but at the same time has seen first hand what it takes to be successful at the collegiate and pro levels.
        And still pretty young and likely driven to succeed.
        Doesnt hurt that he is one (of many) examples of success at OSU either.

        The best aspect of Moore is that he likely won’t be as enamored by velocity as Dorman seemed to be. Since he was a guy who understood how to pitch using location and off-speed pitches, he will have a different approach to the pitching staff.
        I hope we see more guys who are Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, and less guys who try to be Nolan Ryan, and Rob Dibble.

        Hopefully it will bear some fruit in recruiting right away. Moore has been an assistant pitching coach in AAA ball for a while and should be a good asset for Mitch going forward. I’ll be cautiously optimistic about the hire.

          It’s still wild how much people ignore how good Dorman’s numbers were. Walks are the biggest complaint and we were top 15. Also, hate to say it but we likely won’t see many Glavine / Maddux types as the hitters are just too good and your best prep pitchers are high velocity guys. Guys are fringe prospects when they don’t have the velocity.

          I am looking forward to pitch selection and strategy with Moore. I think that maybe the biggest change we’ll see.

    He spent ,three years at Cleveland’s Triple A affiliate I Columbus and they had solid team pitching stats. Given he was a FR all American and went 27-9 at OSU won’t hurt his cause either

    I have to think he’ll be a great recruiter. Not just the credibility he brings to the table, but he seems like a genuinely good dude from what I remember of his interviews with Parker back in the day. Very genuine.

      He should fit right in for Mitch and the staff. A top notch guy from one of Casey’s more successful groups, family focused and a pretty good pedigree at OSU just like the rest of the staff. And he grew up in the Willamette Valley right?

    Amir Reese, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound corner from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, committed to the Beavers during an official visit to Corvallis on Saturday. He chose OSU over offers from Georgia Tech, UCF, Georgia Southern, FAU, Tulane, Southern Miss, Troy, FIU, Liberty and several FCS programs.

    Johnny McNeil III, a three-star prospect from Downey, California, committed to the Beavers during an official visit to Corvallis on Saturday. He chose OSU over offers from Kansas State and Boise State.

    That’s apparently 11 total for the class.

    Seems like it was a decent recruiting weekend for OSU. I think we are up to 5, maybe 6 commitments from the weekend. Sounds like maybe some decent players. I think all 3 stars with other offers to mostly FCS and non P4 schools. Hopefully they are diamonds in the rough and end up being great players for OSU. Timr.wll tell and they have to get to campus first. Like to see some higher ranked, impact players as it seems like we might just be going for volume. Disappointing really so far as with all these commits we are now ranked 75th nationally and 5th in the conference. Need to be better.

      Not on any potential list that I have seen. Joyner wasn’t even the top assistant at Michigan when he left. Their lead assistant will get promoted it sounds like to try and salvage the recruiting class although we all know that never really works. I guess it helps to be the defending national champions though.

        Mike Boynton will be promoted. Whether he’s the actual permanent replacement idk. He has hc experience. Was the coach of that Oklahoma St team with Cade Cunningham the beavs knocked out of the tournament in 2021

  45. It’s kind of a no-brainer if he’s getting a decent bump from the Mavs and a decent length of contract. If it doesn’t work out, there will be no shortage of college teams who will throw money at him.

    Unsure about Moore. No idea what kind of coach he is or how he’ll adjust to the college game. I think Canham and Moore crossed paths when they were both in the Mariner’s org. And it might help that his wife is an osu alum and Corvallis native. Maybe the appeal of stability vs a pro coaches nomadic lifestyle was enough to pursue the job. and or family reasons.

    Shephard doing as well as advertised on the recruiting front. But until NIL rules change, Beavs are a stepping stone team. Certainly no issues getting skill players but where’s all the meat and potatoes guys who will make them look good???

    MBB – Hired another assistant coach. That’s 5 now. Tinkle had 4 last year but most years had 3. Is this a new trend, have more coaches?
    Looks like all the transfers are in. If you add up all their ppg avgs last year, it’s like 95 ppg not counting the high school commits. Beavs were 286 of 365 in ppg last year. We’ll see what kind of system Joyner gets into place that can accommodate all these guys. On paper, it all looks nice. And no he won’t leave for Michigan unless they strike out on about 100 people in front of him.

        As for us, the saying was “We may not win the game but we never lost a party!” when the record was not so hot. Then when everyone thinks we’re dead, we rise up and do something special. That’s as much fun as one could have!

          Funny thing, I read an article over the weekend previewing both teams in the finals. I didnt realize Mike Fox had retired several years back. Their HC now is Scott Forbes who was their pitching coach in 2006 and 2007. He still doesnt like talking about that 2006 finals loss. Still hurts.

  52. Hudson Harbuck, a defensive end from Fort Worth, Texas, committed to OSU on Monday following an official visit to Corvallis. He chose OSU over offers from Arkansas State and New Mexico State.

    The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Harbuck had 39 tackles (10 for loss) and 2.5 sacks, one pass breakup and one fumble return touchdown as a junior at All Saints’ Episcopal School, where he also plays baseball as a pitcher and third baseman.

          This is great news and shows we want to continue to be legit in baseball on the national level. Love this! It is already such a great atmosphere and this will make it even better. Should help recruiting also.
          My guess is the anonymous is a past player. Maybe AR? You would think he would want his name attached to it though but you never know as he is pretty far from wanting the spotlight on him.

        Yeah but we are getting crushed in recruiting by our peers in our conference. We are only ahead of Colorado State and Utah state. WSU is #1 and far ahead of us. Even newcomer, Texas State is making us look bad. So far we have 15 commitments and only 9 of them have a star ranking. I know stars aren’t everything but they are right more than they aren’t. I just expected us to recruit much better with the reputation of this coaching staff.

And now they have determined to harm her and in the process kill the golden goose so to speak.
    A lot of the recent new fans will soon be former fans of the WNBA. The WNBA thought they could co-opt the Clark following as a new fan group for them, but they have made enemies of the Clark fans all over America due to the near criminal way she has been treated by the entire league, and her own franchise.

    Any junior marketing executive could have seen the disaster coming. If the WNBA had the guts to pivot away from the past image and embrace a more traditional, less abrasive thug/lesbian culture, it would have been a genius marketing shift and would have been wildly successful. But the WNBA leaders are too invested in the politics of woke ideology that they decided to teach the Clark fans and CLark a lesson in how things are done in the W. If Clark leaves due to the recent events, the WNBA will implode and it will be a rapid decline of viewership and fans in the seats. As if there are other reasons beyond Clark the viewership exploded in the last 2-3 years. No one cares about the fraud WNBA.

      The NBA has its own share of thugs, pathetic flopping, unnecessary roughness, and drama queens (dramond green anyone?). Don’t know how many are gay and don’t care. It’s a bad product.

      One of the appeals of WBB was that there was supposed to be more team play. Agree they missed out on a big chance to improve the product and marketing.

      Basketball should be an artful game. Enforce the rules, call fouls, encourage defense, it can be great to watch. But it’s been a long time and it’s not coming back. In either league.

      Lowered bars are rarely raised again.

          Agree on both comments. If rules are only suggestions for some players then the game is no longer an honest game.
          For example:
          Euro-step is a travel but never called as such. (Ginobli)
          Palming is a plague but every player does it, so it is never called, even on the most egregious occurrences. (Iverson)
          Step back “gather” step is also a travel, but never called. (Harden)

          The game is an art-form when played as it was in the era of free movement, actual dribbling, jump stops, pivot foot, box out, motion offense among all 5 players.

          All we get now is 5 out- 3 point shots, isolation step back 3’s. It is as unwatchable for the NBA as the thuggery is for the WNBA.

          MJ was quoted saying he never wanted to be a great 3 point shooter, because it would affect his overall mindset and make him much more passive in all other phases of his offensive game. He preferred to stay aggressive and drive or attack mid-range than be settling for an 3 pt shot over and over. No one in the current era would agree with MJ, they would argue analytics but disregard the common affect it has overall.

        In 1972, North Bend had a 150 pound nose guard who wound up 1st team Midwestern League. Behind him were two 150 pound linebackers. Willamette HS had a 210 pound RB named Les Duman, who would go on to play on Oregon’s OL. This player had rushed for over 100 yards against North Eugene (they were 2nd place in the Midwestern that year) and against Thurston, who went 4-5. Facing our trio of little guys with BIG hearts, Duman carried the ball 8 times for just 7 yards.

        That’s the best illustration of “size of fight in the dog” I can think of.

        In any case, the male body fills out after the age of 18 usually. So long as these players coming have the spirit to stick it, odds are good we will be fine.

          Some these guys are 2027.commits. They still have their senior year of hs and wont be on campus for over a year. They’re growing boys. They get bigger before they even set foot on campus and some wont even play their first year.

            I think you’ll see most of they guys play. We don’t have a ton of good players and almost zero depth. Also with the new rules of 5 years to play 5 seasons, it essentially ends the red shirt opportunity. Might has well play everyone to see what you’ve got as it doesn’t affect eligibility. Plus with the portal most won’t make it past year two.

      Irs a good commitment but I seriously doubt he was ever considering Michigan. He’s a 3 star and 47th best QB in the cycle. Michigan already has the 19th best signed for 2027. He would be behind him, a 5 star from 2025 and another 5 star from 2026.

    Beavs just got a commitment from a D-lineman, The 6-foot-0, 260+ pound defensive tackle committed to the Beavers on Saturday, primarily over Bowling Green and New Mexico State. He also held offers from Colorado, Duke, Miami (FL), and UCLA, among others. So he had some good programs looking to sign him.

    Now let’s look at Mighty Oregon vs Great Expectations (apologies to Charles Dickens). A top college football video game has Oregon #1 on O and #2 on D (Ohio State is #1 on D). That is akin to Sports Illustrated ranking us as #1 heading into the 2001 season. We know what happened to us? It all went up on smoke in the season opener at Fresno State. At least we got our pain served on a platter right out of the gate. Oregon’s attempt to buy a championship reminds me of Steinbrenner and the Yankees some decades back. It is hard to do! I would expect hopes to rise in Eugene, then to see them dashed later on since they are playing in the 800 Pound Gorilla League (big time college football) and as we saw last season, a sleeper can do the black swan deal to spoil things for the established names just to add to the difficulty of running the gauntlet.

    Not only do the fans expect a title (their best chance died at Arizona when Chipster lost his starting QB Dennis Dixon), so does the Big Guy at Nike. How’s that for pressure?

    Over here at OSU, we just want to see a team come out, play hard, not shoot themselves in the foot (more games of football are lost than won) and that will get the job done this season. The new coaches for both football and basketball are doing their best to pick up some loose pieces on the board so they can assemble their teams. If they succeed to some extent in 2026-27, imagine how happy we will be with their hiring and our future prospects.

    Which team will end the football season with a smile? I like our odds of doing so. Maybe the basketball team does the same. x2 smiles!

    Anyways, as was said during the 29 straight losing season streak, we may not win the game but we never lost a party! Enjoy the ride and remember how those 29 years of frustration ended on the 1st day of the 1st month of the 1st year for the 2000’s. The losingest program of the 20th century wiped out the winningest team of the 20th century. All of us alive when that Fiesta Bowl game was played will remember it until the day we die.

    That’s my perspective on the coming season in Corvallis and Eugene. Hope for the best!

      This team has small players, the lines sound like huge weaknesses, even with coach speak…TT will feast on Beaver QBs. The Beavers might have to try air raid or run and shoot-like packages and get the ball out quickly. Murphy is going to see the evening sky above Corvallis many times..

      WRs are unproven….ST an unknown…DL is small…

      I like Shepard’s energy but he is really starting a challenging position, even in a weakened “PAC.” WSU, BSU, Fresno, SDSU could all be better, maybe even Texas State. Seems like CSU and Utah State could be beatable, but hell, even with many DI players Smith lost the bowl game to Utah state…

    My prediction – better than year one of the Gary Andersen era. Maybe better than year two or Riley 1.0. Does anyone know what percentage of the starters will be brand new? Not to mention a brand new coaching staff with people filling jobs they’ve never done before. As long as they are better at the end than the beginning, I’d call it a win.

        Be shocked if we win 5 games. I am thinking 2 looking at the schedule. We don’t have many good skill players, our lines are inexperienced and small. Big question at QB. Our defense might not be able to stop the run or pass. Not a good recipe for any success.

      Year 2…Start to win a couple we shouldn’t, lose a couple we should…still wrong side of the ledger
      Year 3…win more consistently but still lose close games… .500 team
      Year 4…win close games and expectations rise…8-4
      Year 5…consistently top of conference…sky’s the limit

        That is a plausible timeline. Unlike the Big Name Schools, where it’s “Win NOW!”, coaches get a chance to have time on their side at OSU. That is a big point in our favor considering the amount of turnover in the coaching profession.

        PDX, Seattle and Vancouver BC would make a fine trio of cities for someone wanting to start up a modern version of the ABA. I do expect the billionaire owner of the Blazers to move the team since taxpayers don’t want to fund the Moda Center stuff he wants. The politicians got way over their skis on saying they would work to get the $$$ for this project.

        If the owner moves, demand he leave the Trailblazer name and logo with PDX, otherwise sue like crazy even if the legal basis is weak. Make it cheaper to get along and go along with this demand than the cost of lawyers.

The Fire will also leave, NCAA tournament schedule will pivot and find a new location and you can all.kiss any big time concerts goodbye. If no Blazers the pipe dream of an MLB team goes from a slim.chance to zero chance.

            If MLB sees that the state, city and county won’t support a long existing and popular NBA franchise you think they would want to be in this market? No chance. Moda will sit empty most nights except for a few low level events, a couple concerts and the Fire games. That won’t pay the operating cost so they will tear it down and re-purpose the land. Fire won’t have a place to play.

            Why would MLB care?

            MLB has put teams back into cities that have lost multiple MLB teams (DC). If Portland is willing to build an MLB stadium and finds an ownership group losing the NBA won’t matter at all in my opinion.

            Leagues expand/move to cities that lost previous teams often.

            You really think Portland will spend to build a $2 Billion MLB ballpark when they won’t spend a fraction of that to keep the Trailblazers? If you don’t think MLB isn’t following this you are nuts. Portland will be last on MLB expansion due to politics, tourism, corporate support among many other reasons. Salt Lake City and Sacramento have jumped Portland. Same with Nashville. Too bad because it would be great and I would go to a lot of games. Just don’t see it happening unfortunately

    Only Portland would screw this up. Moda has stuff going on 300 plus days of the year. Bringing people INTO the city, the downtown restaurants etc. The Blazers only use it for 20 percent of that. As generous as Paul Allen was building the thing largely on his own dime, and then GIFTING IT to the City of Portland, Dundon is NOT Paul Allen.

      The MODA center is a regional asset, whether you follow the Blazers or not. As a taxpayer in Corvallis I don’t mind that the state has agreed to pony up some money. The primary beneficiaries though are portland metro and multnomah co. with inbound people and their money.

      There are people who see any tax as a negative. Hell there are people in Josephine co that don’t want to fund police, fire or libraries.

      When I use the MODA for an event, I’m also spending at a hotel and local bars and restaurants. Seems silly to ignore that money.

        Agreed as I’m out of state and travel to numerous games and events. What most people aren’t understanding is the state etc. should pay 100% for the upgrades and renovations. They own it! If I rented a house and it needed a new fridge or roof I wouldn’t be expected to pay for it. The owner/landlord would. If he expected me to. I would find a new place that wanted me and treated me better.

          Rental agreements on houses and leases on arenas don’t work the same way.

          Teams often get discounted to no rent because they agree to do maintenance. This is the deal both the Seahawks and Mariners have with Seattle.

          The Blazers pay $1 a year to play in Moda and agreed to 50/50 on maintenance in their lease. Why not hold them to the lease?

            Part of that purchase agreement was $1 rent and the Blazers being responsible for 50% of maintenance.

            I just want the Blazers held to the agreement they made with the state/city.

            And frankly I can’t believe anyone thinks the Blazers should be allowed to break the agreement by threatening to move.

He is a great hitter and solid backstop and we also have a great catcher coming in from the State of Washington as the one of the top players in Washington, Cooper McGowan and also plays infield.

    Football and basketball with pro and college all in one post…LOL!

    The Law Of Supply & Demand shows if the demand is high enough, someone will step up to supply it. Just look at the Prohibition Era or the War On Some Drugs to see even when the risks of death or imprisonment are high to see this principle in action.

    Unlike those two examples, not many Really Bad Risks exist in pro sports. $$$ on the line? You betcha! The only thing that can be lost is money and a few sleepless nights. Now let’s step back to 1960. A guy named Lamar Hunt could not make headway with the NFL to acquire an expansion franchise. The NFL had added nothing since they took in the Browns, Niners and Colts from what was left over from the AAFC. It was the early postwar period, with television expanding like crazy, cities growing and being prosperous and plenty of the USA desiring pro football. The ground was fertile and Hunt recognized this so he formed the AFL with his team being the Dallas Texans, who later became the Kansas City Chiefs.

    8 teams: Dallas, Oakland, LA (Chargers), Denver, Boston (later New England), NY Titans (later to be the Jets), Buffalo and the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans). NBC made a deal to broadcast the AFL games and with some money in the bank, the AFL began a bidding war with the NFL for college talent. Salaries went up for the players to such an extent that the NFL decided talking with the AFL made sense. The two leagues agreed to have a common draft, a championship game and merge. Pro football exploded! More teams were added, ABC created Monday Night Football and eyeball counts climbed.

    In pro basketball, there was also increased demand for teams. The ABA emerged to provide that challenge. When the ABA folded its tent, some of their teams went to the NBA. They did well in due time and pro basketball expanded its footprint.

    Today we have LOTS of areas wanting pro basketball. It is time for ABA V2.0 to arrive. My idea is 7 teams in the East and 7 teams in the West. Each team plays its side of the country opponents 4 times and the other side of the country’s teams 2 times for a 36 game regular season. #1’s vs #2’s determine the East and West teams to play in the finals with best of 5 being done in the semis, best of 7 in the finals. The season would run from June to September with the finals concluding in early October. This avoids conflicting with the NBA for the most part and provides pro basketball on TV at a time when no one else has it on the air.

    West: Vancouver BC, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Las Vegas, El Paso, Albuquerque.

    East: Kansas City, St Louis, Buffalo, Montreal, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Birmingham

    The league will get the “hometown hero” deal for each team when it comes time to draft. That will help build fan base interest.

    Anyways, taking some pages out of the AFL’s book might be the way forward for more pro basketball. Heck, two billionaires, one from the West and one from the East, could set up their respective conferences and if the league works out, they will have franchises to sell to new owners. Profit perhaps!

    Now to do something with college football. Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big XII are now basically JV pro football. Big $$$, big TV contracts. Four networks: ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox. Each one bids to see who gets first pick. A Big Ten team in the east gets swapped with Notre Dame, who is associated with the ACC. No other teams need to move. Top 4 of each conference play Round Of 16 with higher seed at home. Quarterfinals, semifinals and championship games get locations to bid for those games.

    The bottomless money pit will eventually find a bottom. Get the teams to recognize that so each team splits the entire TV money package evenly as is done in the NFL. Allow for Bigtime Donors and corporations to pay NIL but have a cap. The demand for $$$ is infinite but the supply is not so let the marketplace decide where the equilibrium point is.

    So those are my starting point thoughts for pro basketball and college football when it comes to the near future. Now to see what others here have for ideas and then to see how these two sports resolve their current situations.

      Sorry bro, but no one is clamoring for more professional basketball. NBA is a garbage league with gambling, corrupt refs, 2 tiered rules, unlikeable superstars, suspect draft lottery, and a completely disjointed salary cap format that forces teams to spend but don’t spend too much, trade but don’t trade without permission etc,

      College football is not going to by expecting SEC and Big10 to just lay down their advantages so everyone else can catch up. Texas Tech is the closest comp to the Lamar Hunt story you mentioned. If there were about 20 schools outside of SEC/Big10 that just decided to use their billions in endowments to buy players away from the SEC and Big10, then you may see some real reform. As long as those 2 conferences and ESPN/Fox are getting everything they want, all others will continue to lag behind. Of the remaining conferences, are there enough billionaires and cash to just continue to up the ante until the SEC can’t keep up? Cowherd says that the SEC will ultimately capitulate to Big10 due to the overall strength in numbers of the Big10 schools and alumni base with big dollars. Then only thing that can rival it would be Texas oil money or Silicon Valley billionaires. If only the Beavs had access to one or the other.

    Beavers sign former Oregon and ASU catcher. He had 25 starts for asu last season and got around .270 with 5 HRs. He was a top prospect coming out of HS but doesn’t appear he’s ever lived up to the hype. I can’t recall his name……

    I say this as someone who grew up rooting for Cal. Moved north and graduated from OSU. I’m really glad the Pac-12 is back and that OSU and WAZZU kept the fire burning so it could return. Sure, a lot of new teams but the conference has a great history and I’m glad it didn’t go away. So sure, maybe we’re like one of those bands still touring 40 years after their last hit and down to two original members, but it is still a legit conference.

    With Congress poised to act on college football, the Big Ten and SEC are looking to add members before any legislation is passed. The ACC and to a lesser extent, the Big XII, are the targets. Notre Dame has so much in its favor for staying independent that they are likely to stay that way. Utah is considering asking the Big Ten for membership.

    What is not mentioned: The Pac-12. Will there be any crumbs for us to pick up when all is said and done?

      I dont see that happening. The big 12 has a substantially higher media rights payout and may try to raid some of the Pac members. UNLV also seems like a logical add and ive heard they are holding out hope for a big 12 invite.

    This will come across as pretty negative, but it is quiet in the summer, and even I can’t muster any hopefulness for the coming football season or the future.
    I can appreciate DanOregon’s comments above about the new PAC12. However, I am struggling to be mentally or emotionally invested in what is to come for OSU. If the Beavs as a whole- Staff, athletes, AD office, administrators, alumni base, donors, fans all included, don’t shift perspective to a winner mentality with football, then it will all be lost and the Beavs will inevitably find themselves in the lower third of the new PAC just like they did in the old PAC far too often. There is a certain reality to the complaint of the 10 traitors when they claim OSU coasted off of the other schools. Well, it’s time to put up or shut up for old OSU. If the Beavs lose yearly to Texas St, Utah St, SDSU, Fresno St, then we should just settle into also ran status along with Rice as a once proud P5 program that was cast aside, with good reason, as everyone else moved on to greener pastures.

    It would be great to see OSU rise out of the purgatory of the last 2 years and win a playoff bid in the next couple of years. We know it won’t happen though. And we can fool ourselves into positive hopes, but the die is cast and OSU is always goingot be the designated loser in any football scenario. We are Charlie Brown. I have to admit that the last 2 years have shown me that the Beavs are a rudderless ship tossed at sea. There is no way the Beavs can come back from JS, Bray, Barnes and the debacle that the program has become.

    • During those many years of losing seasons, every now and then we would rise up and smack somebody silly. Remember coming back from a 28-0 deficit to beat Fresno State 31-28? It was our only win of the season but it sure was memorable as well as record-setting at the time. Being the underdog has its upsides too.

    I read an article about the RH pitcher from Thurston and it’s likely he will get drafted but the beavers are his dream school and have been since he was a kid in middle school. I would be shocked if he opted for the MLB but I suppose it depends on his slot and the money. I’d say there’s a 90% chance he’s a beaver next season.

    Juniors who are drafted are gone. MLB teams do their homework and make sure that anyone they draft will sign.

    Have to wait until around the 5th round to breathe easy. Only Bowen will go early. Bowen is a nice prospect but would develop more on the college scene vs the pros. If he goes in the second round, he’ll probably sign. After that, it would take a pretty good size overslot dealt to get him to sign.

    Everyone else will likely make it to campus unless they agree to underslot deals. Don’t see many of those happening. None are grading especially high.

    • The CBA expires Dec 1 and a potential lock out is looming. HS kids are uneasy with the owners proposing to eliminate them being eligible for the draft right out of HS. College programs are we may scared shitless they’re going to lose most or all of their recruiting class. I posted an article about this a few posts above. We shouldnt expect this draft to go as it normally would.

      Pro teams don’t take flyers on guys anymore. When they draft players now, they expect them to sign.

      In the past when the draft was 40 rounds, no big deal wasting a pick in the last rounds. now they all count.

        No he will not sign unless the Rockies have underslot deals with nearly all of their picks. They can pay him whatever they want but any amount over $150k counts against their signing bonus pool by drafting him in the 18th round.

        My guess is Bowen’s number is somewhere around $1.5-2 million as that’s middle second round money. If the Rockies somehow have that left in their bonus pool, then yeah he’s gone. But seems very unlikely

          You might be right. I saw on X today that the VP of Scouting for Prep Baseball has Oregon State as one of 7 teams listed that were recruiting class winners. He also had Bowen listed as the #2 position player overall to make it to campus. Huge win for us of it holds up.

        Nah, he was mostly in coach speak mode. No real or veiled shots at OSU.

        He was somewhat surprised on the timing of being fired. He was thinking maybe they’d ask him to make staff changes at that point. But he knows if he’s not getting it done, he’s ultimately responsible. Obviously it didn’t work out so next time he would likely make different types of hires. Then he goes on to talk about why he’s happy at WSU. Pretty normal things you’d say when you take a new job.

        Bray will always be a Beaver legend in my books. Credit to him to try to save his alma mater but it just wasn’t meant to be the fairy tale story we all wanted.

    • I just saw that and thought the same thing too, but the big12 is trying to keep up with the sec and b10 and if you can add more geographic diversity and viewership, that is a bonus when getting TV deals. That said, I just think it’s a pie in the sky idea bc the timing isn’t right. As we get closer to the next media rights deal, and the new P12 has shown proof of concept in terms of TV viewers and some on field success, that would make this thing a little more believable.

      • Yeah this isn’t going to happen. If they wanted us, they would have taken us during the last round of realignment. I wish it would happen but this rumor is close to a zero percent chance of being accurate. We don’t have the name, clout, money, location, TV draw and proper funding for competitive big sports programs. We would have to agree to zero shares and that would be crushing for our programa to field a competitive team. The Big12 is not going to keep up with Big 10 and SEC by adding Oregon State.

            I don’t think it’ll happen by any stretch. Timing isn’t right either. That said if you’re a brand knew AD looking to make a big splash, maybe make a name for yourself or set the table for a future P4 job, you at least kick the tires again on Beavs to the Big12. I wouldn’t doubt at all that the new AD made a call. Now whether anybody answered is another story.

            Big12 schools get about $30M a year in media rights. Pac12 rumored to be around $8M-$10M. While the Beavs couldn’t join for free, a half share would be a world better than where we’re at right now on the money side.

            Well Barnes painted OSU into a corner after OSU was left out of the realignment. His mantra was regional schools should trump lots of travel for the sake of the athletes.
            The foolishness of that stance was a real lack of regional schools available to follow through on it for a new PAC.
            It does seem like the whole thing was fumbled and Barnes was simply trying to scramble and put on a brave face when the handwriting was on the wall. OSU was going to be in athletic/geographic purgatory and there was no way to change it.

          True, but remember, when you’re talking about a media rights deal, it’s all about viewers. As I previously said, if the new p12, including OSU, can demonstrate proof of concept with solid viewership #s and decent success, they can position the conference or at least some of the members to be considered for an invite down the road.

            “solid viewership numbers”- The question is whether or not Boise St continues to dominate every conference they’ve been in since about 2003. The schools that will be the most followed are already easy to predict. It will likely be Boise St, Wash St nationally for football; and Gonzaga, SDSU for basketball.
            OSU is already playing catch-up in a watered down PAC12, and it isn’t really in question. OSU needs to have a big year in football by 2027, and a big year in MBB this year.
            Pipe dream, but at least Barnes is gone…

            If Boise St wins and goes undefeated in the new PAC, then it will relegate the Beavs even further down the ladder of future P4 opportunities. Everything about the current timeline is actually against the Beavs. JS really destroyed more than OSU football when he abandoned the Beavs. It has had a much larger trickle down effect than we could have expected. In a 10 day period after he left, it decimated the roster, and left Bray with very little chance to recover. Then Bray ran it further into the ditch by his inexperience, and now we are at the bottom of a pretty deep pit, with a looming realignment that will be largely based on national tv viewership, and market shares, plus a bit of “hot team” momentum.
            I think the Beavs will struggle to rise back up to the prior status as PAC12 members, and it will nail the door shut on future big time athletic opportunities with major conferences. Unfortunate, but the Beavs are going to be relegated to obscurity in the near future.

            Obviously, baseball is the flagship program for beavers athletics but that by itself won’t be enough. Women’s and men’s basketball needs a resurgence and football too. I’m cautiously optimistic with the new coaches and AD so I’m not throwing in the towel at this point.

Case in point, article from GT just this morning OSU heading ‘FAST’ consortium leading to NSF grant of up to 160M. “I worked in industry and academia, and pursued semiconductor research throughout my career,” Murthy said during the livestreamed news conference. “And I can tell you, awards like this are generational. Little else at the National Science Foundation comes close to this scale.”

Recent letter from their president discussing shortfalls in students, both in-state and out of state, has put the crunch on their bottom line. OSU may have lost the arms race, but academically still winning where it counts.

      San Diego State is a shitty school, with a shitty program, and a shitty fanbase in a city that doesn’t care about college football. No one in San Diego knows who SDSU is playing each week and no one cares. Everyone here is a transplant (including me) and only supports teams from their hometown. SDSU might be in California, but I think that Boise State, WSU, or Oregon State would be a much greater asset for the Big 12.

      “Knives out” is a bit extreme given he unfortunately failed on nearly every level. Administration admitting he had no experience, the team had no conference certainty, and they had little in the way of NIL resources might have been appropriate, but even under-resourced, the game prep and execution were very poor. You can see them losing to a school with bigger and faster players, but Special Teams’ inability to execute routine plays is an example of the dysfunction.

      It was not Bray’s dream job, and I don’t recall him ever saying that. Head coaching was not his goal, he did it to help OSU in a time of instability, and for that he deserves some credit. Had he coaching salary resources, maybe he hires a more experienced staff to compensate for his lack of experience, but that too would have likely been challenging with conference uncertainty.

        Bray kind of forgets about the “24 season too. The Beavs started 4-1 and it looked like a bowl game was a sure thing and then the wheels came off. Come on, 28-0 loss to Air Force? He went 1-13 after that solid start. No one talks much about the Houston loss either, but I think that was one of the back breakers. Double digit lead in the 4th quarter against a solid P-4 team. It shows that they had some talent there.

    Oregon has a football record no one wants. They lost two games in which they led 31-0. One at Cal under Brooks and the other at the Alamo Bowl versus TCU.

    UCLA on the other hand is the Comeback King with a pair of wins when being behind by 31.

    Frank Reich of Maryland led the Terps to what was the record comeback of its time, then pulled off another record comeback with the Bills in a playoff game.

          Affordable housing and the cost of living is too high. I can afford to live there, but the ocean and all of the touristy stuff gets old. Plus, the locals like our tourist dollars but certainly not the idea of us taking their jobs and housing. Great place to visit and I wouldn’t be opposed to 2-3 months out of the year but not permanently.

      I’ve talked to a few parents of players in past years. At the end of the year, the guys are given a no bs assessment of what the coaches thoughts are on their future. Guys who want to make it to the next level may have their path blocked, or they are told they’ll be a DH or a utility guy or a bullpen specialist. Not exactly getting time to showcase what they can do. All these guys want to make it to pro ball. Tons of reasons why. Can kind of tell why they left. Bigger school = money and promise of playing time. Smaller school – looking for a bigger role or their path is blocked.

        Just because you aren’t a Blazer fan doesn’t minimize how important they are to the state, city etc. Regardless if the Blazers stay or leave the Moda will still need renovations if they want to keep the NCAA tournament and attract any decent events and concerts. The tax money is super minimal to local residents and much cheaper than what they spend on the homeless and getting absolutely nothing for it. In fact it is having an opposite effect as the homeless population is growing more out of control each day.

            Then don’t chime in if you couldn’t care less. Homeless is relevant when it comes to taxes as a lot are paying 1% for that and not getting anything in return. We will get taxed not matter what for Moda renovations eventually so we might as well have the Blazers and a world class arena to show for it. It will be a less than the homeless tax or supportive housing tax, whatever they are calling it this year.

          • Not to mention the jobs created by the work to renovate Moda, the 50 or so games employing gameday staff, ushers, security types. The money will be circulated back into the community. I posted on a City Councilor’s FB post saying “the Blazers won’t leave” so they didn’t need to pay for the renovations. My post said I thought the same thing growing up in Oakland and was proven wrong all three times.

      Whole situation blows for me personally.
      I’ve followed 2 programs most of my life. The Beavers and the Blazers.
      Already had the Beavers effecitvely neutered and reduced to a minor league program.
      Now a few years later I stand to lose my other team completely, if they end up in another city.
      Tom Dumdum is about as unlikable of an owner as the team could have landed with. All of it stinks and there’s nothing I can do about it.

        It is a page out of the UNike playbook. Any attention is good attention in the new era.
        WSU has set-up the new PAC12 teams for the inevitable sideline fight, racist comments, tossed beer on the opposing team etc., all with an expectation to get headlines. controversy, talking heads opining loudly and plenty of national attention as they create a national uproar out of it.

        They only have 5 home games, so expect the fights to begin on Sept 26 with Arizona, pick up steam on Oct 3 for Fresno St, and culminate in a policy change after Oct 24 as Boise St rages post-game at WSU fans/administration in the bowels of Martin Stadium.

          Notably some of the reasoning behind the move was teams had to cross paths to get to their locker rooms and got into “fracases” on at least two occasions, vs. OSU and Idaho. I’m sure keeping a thousand drunk students in line will be way easier than admonishing your team or asking opposing coaches to keep their teams in check LOL

          I will say, there are many proponents, including AB users, that have recommended OSU making the same decision to move team benches so there’s that

      Chip has become a caricature. He is the former genius who has become the nomad, 1 year gigs, all similarly uninspiring compared to the results he had at NikeU.
      I am more convinced now than ever before that the large part of his success was simply refs not sure how to approach the hurry-up snaps within the rules at the time. He recruited speed for that purpose and nearly turned it into a national championship.
      He has had some success beyond NikeU, but the intense desire from Nike to make NikeU a relevant brand was probably more of a factor than he and many others would like to admit.

      In hindsight, I think Mike Leach was a greater offensive guru influence and more legitimate coach who changed the sport, and he had success in multiple challenging venues without Nike backing him.

        Once the offense substitutes players, the defense is allowed the same opportunity.

        It’s why the referee will stand over the ball. No more blur offense. No more faking injuries.

        That’s Chip Kelly offense in a nut shell. Tire out the opponent sideline to sideline with track athletes and exploit it within the rules.

        The rules no longer allow it.

        Now they just do the same thing as the others. Throw money at it and hope it runs them into a title.

        That’s a legitimate point, and Leach did it with less resources in more challenging environments.

        Chip finally won it all as an OC, but Ohio State had a very expensive, if not these most expensive, talent laden rosters.

        When he coached the Philly Eagles they put up some good offensive numbers initially with players that were already there, then he made some poor personnel decisions…

  125. My son went to the Richfield, WA vs Bend summer college baseball game today. He told me that Proctor hit 2 home runs, went 3 for 3, with 3 BB, 5 RIB, and 5 runs scored. Richfield won 16 -3. The home runs were his 3rd and 4th for the season.

          I mean there has to be chemistry but based on the guys he has brought in, Oregon State could contend in basketball this year. They brought in 2 bonafide all conference type players in Rasmussen and Frietag. Some excellent glue guys. Tons of size. And they have one of the best players in the PAC 12 returning in Lake. All depends on coaching but I am optimistic about anyone who coached under May.

  127. Baltimore isn’t actively shopping Adley Rutschman, but they are willing to listen to offers. Their top catching prospect Sam Basillo is under team control through 2033 which makes Rutschman expendable.

    There’s a few teams out there in need of catching help. There’s a decent chance Adley is wearing a different uniform in the next week if the Orioles get an offer they like.

        Don’t think the Guardians are in the market for a catcher.

        Yankees, Red Sox, Rays and White Sox could all use one. I dont see the Orioles trading him to a division opponent/rival.

        Dodgers could use a backup catcher with the Will Smith injury but I dont see them as a viable option either. Dalton Rushing has performed beyond expectations.

        The A’s Shea Langeliers tore his meniscus and may be out for the rest of the season. That will impact the catcher trade market as he was likely gone because the A’s are just a terribly run organization

      I would be shocked if he is traded. They are only a couple of games out the wildcard to you don’t “sell” a top 5 catcher in all of MLB if you are in this position unless you don’t win a game in the next week and take yourselves out of the wildcard picture completely. Or you get a few top flight starters to help with a push but you won’t get that for him. He’s not a backup either.

      Honestly the preseason hype videos just don’t hit anymore because we have been relegated to second rate status.
      It is pretty sad when the Arizona Wildcats can at least entertain some form of relevance simply because they are in the Big12. Of course they are a natural bottom feeder in that conference too,much like they were in the Pac12. Arizona has very little to claim over OSU, but they can at least indulge in legitimate preseason hyperbole. OSU is simply in a delusional state to engage in any preseason hyperbole because of the conference situation.

      Imagine when the playoffs get expanded, then the Beavs will have a real shot at the 24th seed instead of the 12th seed as it sits now. Any expansion will just add more Big10/SEC schools and the Big12 may get 1 extra team.

      Oh well, at least it isn’t Riley leading the charge in this current debacle. That is what I am reduced to as a Beaver football fan. Too bad and quite sad compared to what once was in the old Pac10.

    I read where Baseball America ranked the beavers baseball recruiting class at #11 in the nation and Bowen is ranked in the Top 10 as an incoming FR. The beavers just seem to reload every year and this coming year it is needed bc many holes to fill, but I think they will be solid again

      Yes Bowen is going to be a top tier player in all of college baseball and he stays for 3 years we could see yet another 1, 1 come.draft eligibility time. We recruited well and even the top ranked kids seemed to have a strong commitment to getting on campus so their draft stock dropped as MLB teams knew they had a heavy lean toward Oregon State. I still think the big losses are losing Dorman and Morris. Not sire we have replenished the starting pitching yet either. Still think we will be a preseason top 20 ranking.

    • Terry Baker scored the only TD in the 1962 Liberty Bowl win over Villanova and did it with a 99 yard run. I bet that is the only college football game with a 6-0 score where such an event took place. When it comes to unique happenings, OSU has to be among the all time leaders.

    Oregon State has landed its top-ranked commitment of the class of 2027.

    Benjamin Harris, a three-start athlete, committed to OSU on Friday. He took an official visit to Corvallis last month and also held offers from Arizona, Colorado, Miami, Oregon and UCLA.

    The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Harris had 39 receptions for 457 yards and eight touchdowns, seven carries for 30 yards and returned 13 kickoffs for 260 yards as a junior at Servite High School.

    Took Sweaty Jr to OSU orientation this morning. Brand new turf installed at Reser Stadium. Looks awesome.
    The signage around the field and the midfield logo feature three very different shades of orange on the Beaver logo. It annoyed me…
    But, the turf will look great on CBS vs TTech.

        I have the lowest expectations I’ve ever had as a Beaver fan. the last 2-3 years has taken a toll as a Beav and I can’t endure the ridiculopus efforts at hype for this new era. It is a shame and a debacle where the Beavs have ended up. OSU is already a pounching bag in the new conference without much argument. As great as the facilities may be in comparison to some of the other members schools, it is all for naught. No one will care anymore once the Beavs get their lunchpails handed to over and over them by multiple MWC schools.

        It is going ot be a debacle and I don’t look forward to it. National media will crow about the miseries of OSU and laugh at the decline of a once proud PAC12. OSU will be the face of the mockery. Ugh.

          UTEP is awful and won’t be a loss. Montana is a very good FCS program and very well.could beat the Beavs. CSU is also awful and starting over with a new head coach.

          WSU also starting over with a new head coach. Most of the others I agree with you. 3-5 wins is my expectation in a new watered down conference.

            If Shepherd hits as a 1st year coach and needs the advice of his experienced staff, I could see a 5-6 win year.
            Hard to believe they should have won 3 more games last year if they could snap a ball.

            The reality check for Beavs fans is how quickly the fall to irrelevance happened. Nw we are wondering if 4 wins are possible against a weak MWC type schedule. UTEP may be bad but it is a road game, first year coach, bad qb play and no plan for special teams that we have seen yet. I’ll stick with no road wins even against the worst opponents on the schedule.

            If you are asking me, I’d guess that the coaching could be 20% improvement over last year but I’m going to be skeptical.
            We are in a challenging trajectory and improved coaching can’t overcome a roster full of smaller and younger guys who are no longer lower level PAC12 (circa 2022 or so). Even that roster was far superior to what we will see this year.

            It is uncharted territory to be outmatched by MWC teams physically and we will see it several times this year. OSU has always hidden behind the PAC12 recruiting advantage and that is gone. NIL is not in the Beavs favor either.

            Even Cignetti would have his hands full in Corvallis with this roster. Murphy will be a disaster. Maybe the defense will be decent, but surely undersized. The offonse will struggle with small wide receivers, inexperienced Oline, and a dreadful qb. I expect special teams to be a disadvantage for every game until proven otherwise. Hence 2 wins cap and a lot of frustration in the fall for Beav fans.

            My optimism however is having Mike McIntyre on staff. That dude could be a competent head coach at many places.

            Bray didn’t want to be a HC, and focused on hiring loyal alumni for his staff in a transition period.

            Shepard enthusiastically wants to be a HC, and connects well with people, which is important too. Bray connected pretty well with players and alumni, but i suspect Shepard’s connects more broadly, and this should help recruiting.

            BUT, as you point out, the Beavers small, slow roster is going to lose a lot of games. 2 wins seems likely. And NIL and a weak conference with poor exposure will be a factor in recruiting and Shepard will move on….

            McIntyre may be the ace in the hole for Sheppard. Who knows. I’m not rooting for the Beavs to lose, nor am I against Sheppard having a great coaching debut and being very successful.
            I’m trying to take off my orange Beaver glasses for the first time since GA and approach a season with some objectivity.

            Historically the Beavs don’t get nice things and if they do, they don’t get to keep them. If Sheppard has a great year, we might be 6-6. And he may be gone next year.
            If the roster is somehow filled with highly productive/overlooked talent, they will be gone next year to NIL.
            Any rebuild for this program is going to need someone like a Whittingham or Chris Peterson to stay for the long haul to great successes. Perhaps Sheppard is that guy, but I’ll wait and see.

            It is a struggle to be 1 of 2 cast asides in all of college football, and then turn around and think the Beavs could ever climb out of the pit they have been tossed into. Even with a new PAC12 and possibly a better shot as conference champ than any other conference for a playoff spot. When that day comes, it will be a redemption story to be sure. But it seems very far in the future if at all.

            I think last season was more frustrating. They lost to some crappy teams and had a double-digit lead over Houston in the 4th Quarter. Anderpants teams were seriously outclassed talent-wise; we knew they were going to lose.

        Eh… my first MLB game was at Chavez Ravine. Bob Welch was pitching against the Reds. The Dodgers won 1-0, because Welch hit a homer to left center. They almost lost, because Johnny Bench hit three towering fly balls just foul of the LF foul pole in his AB in the top of the 9th.

        Still one of the best games I’ve ever seen.

        Another was at the Astrodome when Hershiser was well into his scoreless inning streak. Nolan Ryan’s started for the Stros. We (my friend a Mets fan with his lid on) had seats about 15 rows behind the 1st base dugout. But there was nobody sitting in front of us. So we migrated to the front row at the end of the dugout. Yogi Berra spotted the Mets lid and spent the majority of the game talking to us.

        Baseball is awesome.

    So now we get to spend a few weeks trying to figure out who won or lost the settlement.
    Spoiler, both conferences lose. At the end of the day, both conferences are and will remain insignificant in the grand scheme.

        Is the $70M being paid by OSU and WSU for poaching or is it being paid by the teams that left the MW as exit fees or a mix.

        If it a mix or being paid as exit fees by the other member joining, then a bunch of $$ set aside from the old PAC 12 settlement becomes available to OSU and WSU.

        • If what I’ve read is to be believed…The exiting MW teams had a combined 47M in payouts being held hostage by the MWC so the pac will be paying the remaining estimated +/- 25M, as the MWC was suing the pac for 150M seems like a win for the pac.

    Marquis Raspberry, a sixth-year safety who spent the past two seasons at Division II UNC Pembroke, was added to OSU’s roster on Tuesday.

    The 6-foot, 200-pound Raspberry had 49 tackles (6.5 for loss) with 1.5 sacks, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles last season.             Oh dear great one, I should have specified what my eyes witnessed at the spring scrimmage, and a short practice video yesterday on Beaver Blitz. Although black is said to be a slimming shade (I don’t dare say color, that would inaccurate) the team appears to these eyes to be less than average at size, that being height, weight and stature, as well as less than average at over all team speed. I don’t think it takes a brain surgeon or astrophysicist to draw the same conclusions. Although I am open for my mind to be enlightened, Oh dear, great one., AKA: Jack.

            I don’t doubt that is what you saw and I am in a different state. Anyone who has followed the roster depletion over the last 3 years would expect the roster to be smaller, slower, and less experienced overall. It is a given and a big part of the concern leading into the fall for most rational fans that aren’t busy bloviating about technicalities instead of reality as it is right now.
            Somewhere along the way OSU has to wake up to the decline. Beavs may well get blasted by one team after another that used to be the cream puff non-conference match up Riley longed for prior to real football in the Conference of Champions.

            The black shade was reference to the shade, or some say color of the Beavers practice pants, helmets and jersey the were wearing in yesterdays practice. In the fashion world and in public relations it’s also referred to as a “sliming” color.           • I agree. The number ones on the depth chart look like theyhave made significant improvements in the weight room. It the second and third string where it falls off. Depth and experience are concerning. However there is only one way to go, up! I listened to interview with Mitch Dahlen and it sounds like the offense will look like an air raid, or a Kalen Deboer variety? With the emphasis of the quarterback, getting rid of the ball under three seconds after the snap.

            I’m still trying to be positive, but Murphy doesn’t process quick enough for Air Raid. I’ll wait to be proven wrong. He can’t hit the broadside of a barn on intermediate throws, and his strength at Duke seemed to be deep shots to talented/big wide receivers. It is a horrible fit for Murphy.
            I hope one of the other qbs is capable of an Air Raid approach but it sounds like a concern.

            Reading through the roster above, I realize that this is the first time in 25 years that I don’t have a handle on the starters for any group. It certainly reflects a deflated expectation. I hope the Beavs give me a reason to begin following and learning about the players again. NIL doesn’t help either.

            Go Beavs…. maybe 6 wins are possible?

    The OSU Beaver storyline is about absolute zero on one end and being the best on the other end. If we were almost always good, the expectations would make for a different culture and fan base. If we were also always bad we would have no fan base. Be a Beaver fan for both the face plants and the fine upsets! This kind of trajectory is so much like real life. Pain, then persistence followed by a bounty of presents at times to make the whole struggle worthwhile.

    Before Avezzano’s first season imploded, we won the opening game against Fresno State after being behind 28-0 and set the record for the greatest comeback in college football. That Bulldog team had two WR’s who would be NFL All-Pro’s and a QB who would do well as a coach. They did the Ultimate Cougin’ It and we got the most improbable win in our football history.

    On the other end, the losingest program of the 20th century demolished the winningest team of the 20th century on Januaey 1,2000 in a major bowl game.

          Clownzano with behind the scenes access is a major red flag for Sheppard’s awareness and judgment honestly. Why is no one in the AD office informing him of the idiocy Clownzano has created against OSU over the last 20+ years. I despise Clownzano and he is a class 1 hypocrite, awful broadcaster and lazy journalist. Shoudl nevder have the benefit of behind the scenes access at OSU for thew rest of his life just based on what he did to the 2012 Beaver football (Wheaton) and the 2017 OSU Baseball team (Heimlich). He is an enemy to OSU sports, and should be treated as such.

            Beavs were 6-0 heading to UW. Canzano gets on the radio and declares that UW is a soft team and won’t slow down OSU’s Mannion/Wheaton connection. UW comes out in the first half and laid out Wheaton on a late hit along the sideline and he missed the rest of the game. OSU fans and maybe some UW players claimed it was a response to CLownzano calling them soft.
            Beavs lost the game 20-17.
            Canzano had a gloating article afterward inserting himself into the turn-around for UW. He is a hack. Easy to search.

      Watching coach shep in a couple of interviews he seems pretty upbeat, send personable, like he connects with the kids, hopefully he can keep them giving that effort

      That was one of many frustrating aspects of last season. There were issues with special teams, there were issues with the snapping, there were issues with QB play, but maybe worse, it felt like the team just had given up. I don’t remember which game, so I can’t point to a specific moment, but it just felt like sitting in the stands, we all gave more of an effort than the players on the field. Really disheartening.

      If Coach can breathe some life back into this team, if they can play like they want to be there and for each other, they played Houston to ot, I think maybe they’ll be better than people expect. But if/when the wheels fall off, they resort to low effort bs like last year, yeah it’ll be another rough one.

        That’s an understatement! : )

        I’m leery of those who focus so much on motivational tone, but I think he’s genuine, knew what he was getting into, and wanted the job.

        I agree sustaining motivation may be challenging when the L’s pile up…hopefully there will be progress to point to at individual, unit, and team levels he can point to to keep them going, heads up, striving.

      Refreshing change, worth a watch. Composed, organized. Highlights for me:

      Had coaches dinner, brought in Pat Casey to speak.
      Gary Payton coming to visit.
      Poyer has visited.
      Talking to engineering school about integrating AI into athletics , praises engineering school.
      Emphasis on long term relationships with student-athletes, thinking about the entire continuum of recruit to alumni.
      No mention of Riley.

      Weakness; Vague, unfocused answer about how to out fans in the seats in a time of transition.

      Clearly, winning games is important, but realistically, for what conference opponents are you going to have 30K+ fans for football? Assuming you have a winning program, maybe WSU, BSU…SDSU? Fresno? Going to be tough to bring in good non-con opponents if they are adding a conference game to their schedules…

        I’d add that, “he was “heavily involved” in Ohio State’s recently announced $17 million deal with JPMorganChase for a jersey patch for its 36 sports teams.”…..”We’ll figure out if we do a jersey patch,” Griffin said. “Team’s working on that. It certainly is on our list. It’s something we talk about each and every day. It goes back to the resources that we’ll need for athletics and the rest of the university.”

      • My two eye blinking ‘this doesn’t sound like the last guy’ moments were
        1) him talking about engaging the engineering dept and ai, which I’m sure aren’t unique to OSU but with the new Huang exposure (no not that exposure BG) but never heard even a glimmer of this thought process from SB
        2)the direct response to uniform sponsorship and his direct involvement with his last employer and getting that done

        I like the Barnes personally I think he did fairly well for the beavs during a really terrible set of circumstances and didn’t bounce just to get free of the mess. Also they’ve been very gracious to my wife and I, lots of ticket kick downs and sat us and some friends in the ad suite for a game when the west side reopened… but …Griffin sounds sounds like a guy from a bigger environment, with a clear set of goals.

        Dahlen said that…using GPS more, 40 times less.

        Also says goal is for QBs to release the ball in 3 seconds or less, and he’s been timing them at 2.6-2.8 seconds.

          So we have good news that qbs are getting rid of the ball instead of getting sacked, but it begs the follow-up questions:
          1) Do we have receivers that can get open within 2.5 seconds and catch the ball?
          2) Where and to whom is the qb throwing it to in 2.5 seconds? DBs, WRs or out of bounds to just get rid of it?

          Based on what we all saw last year, Murphy is expert at not getting rid of it in time, throwing behind or over the wr and more likely to chuck it out of bounds than to hit a wr in stride.

          Of course hitting an inside slant to a speedy wr sounds great for a fall camp sound bite, but can we actually expect to see it in a game situation? I’ll be pleasantly surprised when we get to see it happening regularly.

          It is kind of crazy to think how poorly the qb play at OSU has been since DJU transferred in. Meanwhile WSU has had 2 heisman candidates play and transfer from their program. QB is the key, and I hope Sheppard/Dahlen can get it right.

            Poor qb play at OSU since Mannion if we are honestly assessing things. Pretty much a decade of bad qbs. It can’t be much worse when the only guy to defend is Luton in 2019 as the best qb in the last 12 years.

    LSU apparent scheme:

    “The idea is to house media rights in a separate entity controlled by the university. LSU would control 80% of the new entity, and the remaining 20% would be sold to investors.

    But if it walks like private equity, and talks like private equity, LSU is going to have to do a masterful spin job to make this thing work. LSU is a public university, so it can’t sell shares for purchase.

    investors, and the entity would then give LSU that cash collected in exchange for the right to receive payouts from future media rights distributions.

    So technically, the investors don’t own a piece of LSU’s media rights pie from the SEC (through partner ABC/ESPN), the fund itself — which the investors have paid into — is entitled to a percentage of the media rights revenue. The fund then pays back the investors.

    The overriding problem (beyond the aforementioned fiscal machinations): LSU has proven over the past few years it’s not the most fiscally prudent of sports programs when it comes to hiring and firing coaches, and spending on student athletes.

    LSU fired former football coach Brian Kelly in the middle of last season, and paid him $53 million to not coach. It fired basketball coach Matt McMahon at the end of last season, and paid him $8 million to not coach.

    It got into a bidding war with Florida, and signed new football coach Lane Kiffin to a $91 million deal. Kiffin then gave defensive coordinator Blake Baker a $9.3 million deal, and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. a $7.5 million deal.

    LSU’s 2026 roster is reportedly worth more than $45 million, from both internal NIL (revenue sharing) and private NIL deals.

    New men’s basketball coach Will Wade signed a $30 million deal this offseason, women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey has a $36 million contract through 2033, and baseball coach Jay Johnson has a $23 million contract through 2032.

    That’s a boatload of cash out the door for a football coach who has never won a Power conference championship, and a men’s basketball coach who was fired by LSU not long ago for running afoul of NCAA laws. Or the two marquee, revenue-producing sports.

    And now LSU has decided to throw private equity on top of the fiscally reckless heap, though it’s not technically private equity. It’s “donations” from boosters for the right to recoup from future media rights deals — if, you know, they want it.

    What could go wrong, you ask? How about another 6-6 football season, and the margin calls start flowing.”

    • Money makes the world go ’round, then it crashes. Rush did a song called “Big Money”, which fits the current sports environment.

      In the meantime the NFL is looking to place more games on revenue-generating platforms instead of OTA broadcasts.

      LOL no Eggers piece is complete without a Mike Riley reference, from the article, last paragraphs:
      “As I prepare to leave McIntyre’s office, he says he would like to say something about Mike Riley for the story. (I had mentioned to him that Riley told me they had gotten together for dinner in Corvallis recently.)

      “Mike was a great coach and is a class act,” McIntyre says. “I enjoyed getting to know him when I was coaching in the Pac-12. Over the years, we have stayed in touch. When I got here, he showed up at practice one day, and it was so great to see him and get reacquainted. I look forward to him being a great sounding board for us, no doubt about it.”

      No slam on MR, I hope he’s doing well.

          You can’t critique Riley without breaking out his faults.

          Otherwise, it appears as hate on an otherwise competent coach and great person, given all metrics.

          That’s the whole reason we’re here. Or it should be.

          • Or maybe Mac figures he knows where the bread is buttered in the OSU octogenarian fan base and is playing to them as early as possible.
            I’ll grant that there was likey some professional friendship, but c’mon, another dip at seeing Riley around practices etc is just frustrating to hear again.
            We will never be able to disconnect from Riley even with a completely disconnected head coach in place. Unfortunate.

    1 week into training camp and Shepherd can already see this season will be a struggle.
    Lower your expectations but come support the team is the message to fans.

    Thinking back to last year, what would our record have been if we had a semi competent special teams. Seems like that was our biggest undoing and things snowballed quickly from there. Well, that and our QB being a bust didnt help.

      The seats around mine are mostly resale at this point; mostly empty as the season went along. One game a group of 40ish yo alumni having a good time, obviously been pregaming, half way through they were just laughing and left mid game. I have pics of people in front of me on their tablets watching a movie. Like what the hell.

    So he went from a hype man to quickly pivoting into a cautious cheerleader with reality glasses. We already know it is going to be a long season. That is why I was skeptical of the hype in the first place.

      Admittedly, I’m much less tuned into OSU athletics than I used to be.

        Frankly I’m not bothered by a positive yet guarded messaging. I think many here were already ahead of that messaging, with many well into doom and gloom territory

        I think the hype is only around change and hope. Transition points are interesting and important, but OSU’s history of managing them in football is poor and difficult for fans to overcome.

        Smith’s tenure went 2, 5, 2 (covid year), 7, 10, and 8 wins…so four years to a “decent” season….but that was against better competition.

        Filling Reser will be challenging….

        • Overall secondary market prices are pretty low in general. Thinking about taking my son to see the Texas Tech game even though it will likely be a back alley whoopin.
          But who knows, maybe them not having their starting QB anymore is disruptive enough to give us a glimmer of hope.

          Right now you can get into the November games (Texas St /Utah State) for about $10 each, fees included on the secondary sites.
          So cheap!

          A coaching change should never be an expectation for immediate wins. That’s on the observer. Cignetti is an extreme outlier.

          The progression over years is the computational metric. Sustained success is how we get poached, except by those with a mindset borne of short term wonts.

      I do wonder about their cut on ad revenues. I imagine it’s positive for us, being a large contributor to viewed content.

    • I don’t necessarily hate it, I like the easy access. The PAC is putting it together and running it out on YouTube keeps the cost to eyeball ratio manageable but also comes across as kind of rinky dink. Belt tightening isn’t always pretty though
