    Beavers game at Houston 9:00 am pacific. That seems a bit unfortunate for the Beavers(?).

    Odd to start a season without a sense of playmakers. I hope Freehauff is one…the TE group is supposed to have depth, impact this season. Hatcher @ RB?

    Be really nice if the DLine can at least hold its own?

    Odd to be rooting for BSU (@ UO) and Fresno (USC).

    Line for tomorrows game is 21. That’s really what the Beavs are playing for. Can they beat the spread?

    I’d say Vegas is being nice to them.

    The thing that will tell you if the Beavs can compete is the oline and dline. If they can hold their own, might have a decent season.

It is a new era for a reason, please stick to the main goal of winning games instead of trying to butter-up those alums who loved Riley and mediocrity.

    I love kickoff to a football season, and a cozy overcast day, I’ll be settled in for the whole game, hopefully it’s not a good reason to start day drinking. Can’t watch GameDay those shit monkeys have ruined the sport and turned that show into WWE fuckery. Anyone watch it and what did they say about beavs?

    with so little known about the composition of the team and the coaches, everything will be a surprise: what does the offense/defense look like schematically, are there any players still on the team I recognize the name, do they look competent even if overmatched, do they have have any fight in them, can they snap the ball, do they still look like the keystone cops.

    Transfer Newberry appears to be the early #1 RB, thought Hatcher would be, but Newberry supposed to be versatile.

    Whiskey saw it right. Shitty spot on the Atkinson scramble. I could understand calling him short of the 1st down because he slid, but they spotted him 2+ yards shy when it should have been 3rd and inches.
    Our next play we ran about 2 yards but were still short.
    And 4th down hurry up play didn’t result in any positive yardage.

    Not bad really. Look more like a solid team than last year. Some good plays on O and D. Atkinson looks good. A few missed plays on each side. A couple bad calls. But I’m worried about the 2 o line injuries. Definitely something overall to build on

    2 coaching mistakes… rushed 4th and 1 bad QB sneak call with our line (spot also seemed bad on 2nd and 3rd down the plays before)…should have called TO… also attempting a 47y FG is always questionable to say the least.

      If Ojeda were a good kicker and, say, 70%+ from 47 yards, kicking becomes quite defensible. But if by “bad kicker” we’re talking about someone you expect to make only ~50–55% from 47, I’d strongly prefer going for 4th-and-7.

      So given score + 3:23 left + 4th-and-7 + 47-yard attempt + underdog status + questionable kicker, I’d lean GO FOR IT, probably fairly clearly.

    Sure, we’re down by a couple scores, but I do think overall the team plays cleaner and the play calling is much improved over previous Beaver teams. The line talent just isn’t there, as expected. And OLine injuries compound that issue.
    Feels like the type of game we would be down by twice this margin in prior years.

    First half impressions,

    Offense – had low expectations but Atkinson was the right choice. Looks confident back there. Playcalling seems to be fine, execution isn’t all there.

    Defense – I guess it’s in OSU’s dna to struggle vs mobile QBs. So many missed tackles.

    Special teams – A+ for not botching snaps. haha. But gotta make kicks

    Overall – Players don’t look lost so credit to coaches. Obvious talent gap to P4. Could be competitive in conf play.

      It’s too bad the schedule is so loaded against the Beavs in week 1 & 2.
      They look good enough to hang in conference play, but we’re going to be limping after playing Houston and TTech back to back.
      Every other game on the schedule we should at least be competitive in so long as we’re healthy.
      Would have been nice to have an early FCS tune up game in week 1

        Beavs can see what type of effort and execution is needed to beat those types of team. And then perform at that level vs the rest of the schedule.

    I’ve seen enough to predict Atikinson will get poached in the offseason. Throws a really nice ball and hasn’t been risky with his passes.

    I’ll tell you, OSU has some talented receive s with speed and Atkinson is much better than I expected. The Beavs have some stuff to clean up, but I was pleasantly surprised they are much better than I expected. Tackling was better in the second half, they need better run blocked ng but the pass blocking was solid. Overall, I was very encouraged by their performance today.

    Some encouraging stats. No turnovers, two takeaways. 5 penalties, 42 yards, 3/3 in the red zone, ….not bad for a first and road game. But, 4/15 on third down, no running game. Again, the line play on O and D a big factor.

    Well, pleasantly surprised by the qb, wrs, and special teams. Need some work on tackling apparently.
    Maybe Dline will be great in conference play, and Oline needs to figure out run blocking. It would also be nice to see a screen pass when you know a blitz is coming.

    I am hopeful looking at conference play. Not so sure about next week against Texas Tech. Week 1 to week 2 will be interesting.
    We know the qb is legit and the teams know he is going to make the right decisions and throws.
    I am intrigued. Sounded like the effort was there all day. Nice switch from the quitting that happened last year.

    Even with a loss, it was a good game 1.

    I’ll give the Beavs a solid B for today’s performance. Passing game is legit. Running game is suspect.
    Defense was not without highlights, actual sacks and a couple forced turnovers.
    It seems that defensive staff is putting a priority on tackling at knees and below. It is a solid technique choice when your defenders are taking on stronger runners who may have a size & strength advantage one on one.
    The plus to this is good tackles drop the guy fast, but a bad tackle give the ball carrier open space.

    unranked OSU on da’ road vs #23 Houston gives the Cougs something to chew on and think about as our side does cover the spread.

    After one game under the new staff I can say – I see it! Obviously some tackling issues. But the offense looks competent. The special teams seems coordinated and the number of procedural type penalties were few. An amazing job considering this is a new staff with a largely new group of players. Defense needs to learn to make plays and I’m sure we’ll lose some physical match-ups, but the the team looks well-coached. The players look like they know what they are doing.

    This might sound a little counter intuitive, but today’s loss almost seems like a win given that the team exceeded what I thought they would look like. I mean, they looked prepared, well coached, organized and really didn’t make too many mistakes aside from some poor tackling technique that they really cleaned up in the second half. The O line did very well in their pass protection and I thought the offensive game plan was solid. They showed a variety of offensive sets in the passing game and the receivers were really quite good at finding open spots in the secondary.

    There is still lots of room for improvement, but as a long time fans, I don’t ever recall a team having to rebuild from the ground up being this prepared and polished.

    They say the most improvement occurs between game 1 and game 2 so next week will be a test to that statement…I don’t expect a win but if they can compete from start to finish and stay within 14-17 points I think their confidence will grow. Who knows but they might just get a win too. Either way, continue to develop and grow and we will see how the season progresses.

      I can’t think of a better game one performance, particularly against a “top 25” team, in a very long time. They trailed for quite a while, but it was competitive with 6 minutes left. And there was a talent gap. In the past, OSU has looked like shit against FCS teams early in the season.

      Anyone think of a better game 1, whether with a staff with continuity or a new staff? Riley’s non-con performance sucked. Anderson and Smith’s first games probably weren’t this decent. Its probably there, but I’m maybe I’m not remembering it.

    I just saw a Big10 ref crew steal a win from Western Michigan. Somehow they found a second on the clock to give Michigan an extra play and you cna guess what happened next. I would expect Western Michigan to file a formal protest and demand a transcript of the booth communication to see how the refs determined there was still time. So gross, and the worst of it is Western Michigan kicked them all over the field for the entire game, and Michigan knew they were beaten. I have no dog in that fight, but it was a sports travesty honestly. Sad for the WMU team and fans. They beat Michigan in the Big House and had it stolen from them on a bogus clock reset.

    So… I always record every game that is on cable, because I typically will get to watch maybe one half (maybe even half of that) uninterrupted. So I will usually watch what I missed later in the evening when I have time. Well, some dildo at ESPN decided to make the decision to cut to the Texas game right after the Beavs cut it to a score completely ruining my opportunity to watch the whole game. But I liked what I saw. Depending on how much they improve and grow into their roles. This could actually be a pretty good football team. I really want to go to the Texas Tech game.

    OLive has a story titled “Oregon survives shocker against BSU.” There was NOTHING shocking about that game. Ducks move to 2-3 all time against BSU, the last two wins, and both close.

    I suppose it should be shocking given the difference in the roster and coaching salaries, and that it was a home game.

    Morning after thoughts

    Shephard’s rep as an elite WR coach is validated. Offense looks like the UW offense from a few years ago with Penix. Lots of shotgun and passing first to move the ball. Obviously need a run game to keep the defense honest. Atkinson played well, a few bad throws that could have been ints but moved the offense well. Oline will need to overcome injuries from the first game.

    Defense is clearly talent deficient vs the power conferences. Missed tackles is hurting them a lot. It does mean they are in position to make the play but just can’t. this is something that does carry over game to game no matter the opponent. So they need to really work on this.

    I expect a pretty bad beat down next week. TTech is on another level. Injuries to the oline will slow down that side of the ball and the defense is going to get beat up front, which means they won’t be able to stop the run game and missing tackles will extend drives.

    Opening line next week is 28pts.

    I am optimistic about the season, that they’ll be competitive

      Im more optimistic about the TTU game. They didnt exactly look like world beaters vs Abilene Christian (won 33-10). Im sure they used a fairly vanilla offensive play book since that was a sure W.

      The old adage is the most inprovement comes between games 1 and 2. So I expect the Beavs to improve. However, TTU probably will as well.

      28 points seems a little high for a spread though.

      TTU was picked to win the Big 12. Beavs played pretty solid on the road against the team picked to finish 4th in the Big 12.

      While i dont expect a win, I expect the team and coaching staff will be amped up for the first home game. Score will probably be relatively close to the same as the UH game.

    Not a good first week for the new Pac12 conference.
    Pac 12 has only 2 wins combined through week 1(plus week 0)
    San Diego State took down Portland State.
    Colorado State took down Wyoming.
    WSU plays UW today(likely another L).
    OSU and Boise outperformed expectations, the rest all look like bad losses.
    Utah State losing to Idaho State is a bad look for the conference.

      Next week isn’t looking much better. Beavs host Texas Tech.

      4 more likely losses. Boise hosts Memphis and that’s not a gimmie for the blue donks either

      I’m still trying to hold onto my glass half empty approach and wanting to be pleasantly surprised by this team and staff. But..given the showing yesterday, I am warming up to them.
      So maybe the Beavs are top half of the conference and have a chance. Based on watching BSU, I think Atkinson is a better qb than Madsen, and that means he is likely better than the rest of the qbs in the PAC.
      If we have a top tier qb for this conference, and the staff figures out a few things on defense, it could be a surprising year.

      One other thing that will fade is the chip on the shoulder aspect that the 6 new members used to have whenever they played OSU. OSU was the PAC12 school that they all felt they could and needed to beat for respect, and it happened with Fresno St, Boise St, Utah St, and Colorado St.

      So if we evaluate the conference in light of week 1, (apart from the Beavs getting everyone’s best shot out of conference malice), I can actually consider the Beavs may have a chance to win the conference. It is a long way away form today, but my expectations were surpassed so much that I am reconsidering my lack of preseason Beaver goggles.

      Imagine that BSU, OSU are both 6-1, and WSU/CSU are at 5-2 in conference going into the last game. How do they arbitrarily decide who should get the advantage? Seems kind of suspect even if it is an innovative concept.

    WSU defense looks pretty good vs Washington. They appear to have the trademark of bend don’t break at least so far in the 1st quarter. WSU isn’t going to be an easy out based on what they’ve done so far.

        Well we know they know it is a bigger issue when every show, sports update and halftime show since has pretty much said it was correct and everyone needs to move on. I’m certain the WMU coach was told he would never get a P4 job if he didn’t accept it, the WMU AD was told they would never get another $2 million body bag game with any Bog10 school again if he didn’t go along with it, and the MAC commissioner was told to shut up or the MAC would be iced out altogether form the CFP and future scheduling. Probably along with each of them getting a deposit into a Cayman Island bank account as a “gesture of goodwill”, an incentive up front to keep quiet and not make an issue.
        The challenge for the Big10, ESPN et al is we all saw it and it doesn’t matter how many officials from every corner pronounce it as legit, we all know it was plain as day fraud and cheating. It is the purest form of gas-lighting and propaganda to tell us over and over we didn’t see what we saw in real time. Even the announcers had no hesitation that the game was over. Any sports fan, or non sports fan for that matter could watch the play and see that the clock was at 0:00…
        As we know, billions of dollars are at stake, from gambling, conference bragging rights, media deals and all the rest. It is crazy that the BIG10 will just gloss over it and basically say, “Yeah we cheated on national TV, what can you do about it?” and ESPN/Fox and everyone else (except normal fans) is willing to go along with it.

    It is a disaster for Whittingham either way. He is forever linked to them as a cheater whether he likes it or not, right from game #1. Incredible how bad it looks and he is caught right in the middle of a bunch of admins who want the W, control the $$, and decide things beyond football. Too bad for Whitt. I bet he would rather have the loss and the heat of that instead of obvious cheating on his behalf by hidden forces. In a loss, at least there is time to build up the team. But this only reinforces the status quo of Harbaugh, Moore, and Stallion permeating a program of cheating as the norm.

    According to his voice mail my call is very important to him and he’ll be getting back to me in the order my call came in. It’s been about five hours so far and I’m still waiting by the phone.

      It is a delightful dream to consider that our mega-billionaire doesn’t care the least about sports but could easily bankroll an elite talent roster transformation and buy a championship that Nike never could. How amazing would it be if Shep somehow strikes up a great friendship with Huang, and in turn Huang just decides to throw a $2 billion athletics donation for Shep to go win it all.

      Oh the irony of OSU being able to buy that elusive football national championship before the ducks. I would enjoy that very much.

    • That AD is a politician with a pretty obvious strategy. WMU doesn’t want to rock the boat with the Big10 by protesting the game outcome in litigation etc, but does want to pressure the CFP to create an exception based on a different version of the outcome.
      So keep your non-conference alliance that funds the entire athletic department, and push for an advantage when the time comes for reviewing the top P6 schools for CFP.
      In other words, have your cake and eat it too. Every other P6 school should be howling at WMU over this plain as day attempt to play both sides to their advantage. If WMU is upset about the outcome, protest immediately and vociferously to the UM admin, NBC, Big10 all at once.
      Instead they have given it a couple of days, and decided the best route is to target the CFP committee in hopes that they are given a mulligan even with a loss. It is just as suspect as the clock ref, but with more time to devise the plan.
      WMU is no different than UM with this stunt. They both are simply looking at what result gets them more $$ in the long run. For WMU, it is both non-conference games with the Big10 and a shot at the CFP. I hope they drop a couple of games and no one cares about them the rest of the season after seeing that article. Thanks for posting it.

        Everyone should be rethinking watching college football after that bullshit. Its hard enough for one of the little guys to rise up and beat a P4 program. Even harder when you have to beat the game officials too.

        I thought the opposing team in non conference games supplied the officiating crew? Is this no longer the case?

        There should be an independent in game review crew that isn’t affiliated with either conference.

        • They returned everyone from an MAaC championship team and have a good look at the CFP with a win against UM at the Rig House. He wants to ensure they still have that shot if they can go undefeated the rest of the way.

    According to James OopsICrappedMyPants at the BigO, Shepherd has multiple roster spots still open out of the 105 spots in the event that he finds players he wants to add ahead of Fall enrollment closing.
    Great strategy in my opinion.
    Find some linemen who didn’t make an NFL roster and pay them to fortify the lines for 3 months.

    SEC proposing teams need to play 10 p4 games to qualify for the CFP.

    Oregon’s future schedule doesn’t qualify under this standard so they’d need to get rid of a game in the current schedule. This is the way to get out of the future civil war games. Oregon isn’t going to get rid of the FCS teams on their schedules. With what Boise St just showed, they won’t take chances in the 2 games they can get auto wins and those would be home games.

    My opinion is that there’s no real benefit to playing a team where the opposing QB makes more than the Beavs head coach.

      Agreed. Fuck Oregon. They decided what they felt was best for them and went that direction. There is no benefit to playing them except for a pay check and an L.

      Unfortunately this is probably going to be a regular thing once or twice a year.

      Here’s how the G6 mitigate that. Astronomical pay outs. You wanna play us? 10 million. For one game. You already got no problem paying 60 million for a roster.

      No dice? Ok. Fuck off. Go play with yourselves. It’ll naturally eorl itself out.

      • It’s interesting talking to wazzu fans, and seeing their comments online, it seems many want the apple cup to continue, even while lamenting the early season version

        I get the idea that providing a body bag game and taking some of their cash is appealing, but seems like there would be plenty of teams happy to destroy a former pac team… although all these other caveats they’ve been trying to add, like eliminating play against anyone but a p2-4 team may make those games more difficult to arrange too. But why do any favors for the assholes that left the pac high and dry?

    • Only makes it more difficult for the G5 teams to make money.
      That’s 1 less opportunity to get paid to play a P4 team because you know those teams will always schedule one FCS. So now there will be 1 less open slot for a G5 team to play a P4 team. It keeps the pot of money within their ranks and also insulates the P5 teams from getting embarrassed by losing to an “inferior” conference’s opponent.

    Any bets on whether Theresa Gould is drafting an invitation to LSU as a future member of the PAC12?

    Rumblings that Lane Kiffin has ruffled so many country club feathers that they are meeting and considering a vote to oust LSU from SEC membership.

    I never really cared for Kiffin, but he is certainly ticking off all of the right people. I will root for LSU to just roll the entire SEC in his revenge tour and create more enemies along the way.
    I can also root for Indiana and Cignetti to continue to upset the blue-blood applecart for the 3rd year in a row.

    A star as 24 team playoff and the obvious charade it would be in favor of “everyone”, we know it is just a way to add at least 3-4 undeserving Big10 and SEC teams for both conferences. And still only 1 slot for the excluded schools.

    Interesting article in The Big Zero about Dahlen using an unbalanced line formation to create a numbers match against the defense resulting in some big chunk plays. I think that’s a great strategy given OSU will be at a size disadvantage in some other games this year. However, I’d like to see his offense take some advantage of the speed receivers and run the fly sweep that could open up some holes for an inside running game. Just a thought bc you can use some misdirection to get the defense to over pursuit and use their aggressiveness against them. I expect TT will be very physical and aggressive so if you try to play straight up with them, it could be a blood bath. Thoughts?

    Angry suggested 4 games were needed to evaluate a QB…the next three vary quite a bit v. Texas Tech, v. Montana, @ UTEP. Should wind up 2-2.

      He might be in the mold of Traitor Smith but as Smith was undersized and not very athletic but knew the game inside and out. Atkinson could turn out to be very similar to the traitor bc of his football junkie mentality. We will see how he performs under extreme defensive pressure this week.

    Whoops.. a buddy pointed out that I missed two really important other revenue sources soon to be provided by Trump.
    He promised huge rebates on the way from the trillions of dollars that Elon found with DOGE and even more money coming our way from the tariff refunds !
    Can’t wait to see that sweet cash and passing it on to the Beavs.

          Watching the highlights from last week, Atkinson throws a pretty good ball. Decent zip but catchable.

          I like the way Dahlen called the game and he looks relatively aggressive and creative without being stupid. At least from the highlights.

          Legree will probably get paid in the offseason if he is consistent.

            Yeah, I hope we have that problem where we have players good enough that other teams want to poach them. Feels like it’s more important than ever to have a really good staff to find, coach and be flexible enough to handle the constant flow through a program.

            If OSU can be the landing place for good, under recruited players to get coached up and has that rep at least until NIL nonsense gets stabilized, we could be in good shape, at least for some entertaining games. Just don’t ever expect to buy into a single player again.

      Not expecting much help from folks in the stands. There were more people at the fairgrounds tailgating this morning than I remember seeing last year for any game, but no students and expected rain, seems like quiet day at Reser.
