We left two scores out on the field. The one that Atkinson over threw Legree wide open for a TD and then Hampton’s drop on the 1 yard line. Beavs should be up 21-14.
So far both Beav lines are better than I expected, even with a bit of a lapse for awhile in the second qtr.

This is a competent coaching staff. No offense to Bray, who was a good DC and didn’t want to be a head coach, but this is markedly better. With more talent and depth, this team could be 2-0 after this game….

As a fan who’s sat through the rain and watched some abysmal football the last couple of years I feel like we are allowed to be excited about the possibilities, but understandably gunshy.

Oregon State plays undefeated Montana (ranked No. 2 in the FCS Top-25) on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Corvallis. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. (PST) on USA Sports.
Didn’t realize Montana was ranked that high. That’s a late game though, may dissuade some attendance. OSU needs to perform highly in all three phases of the game.

Last week some friends and I were ready to buy Montana tix after the Houston game, but then I saw it was 8pm start, meaning I wouldnt get home till 1:00am. the choice to watch on tv is an easy one

IMHO, if the Beavs lose this game, all the momentum goes to shit. Montana St is #1 and just dominated Nevada, so the Beavs need to play strong against #2 Montana to not meet the same fate.

Coaching-
The staff has performed a miraculous shift even at 0-2. I’m sold on the future from these guys. This is actually the fulfillment of years of angrybeavs complaints. How many times were we told to “Be careful why you wish for” every time we demanded a departure from the Riley circle/coaching tree.
Shepard has already done more in 2 games to silence those warnings than I thought possible.
He is a better talent evaluator, motivator, fundraiser, program personality than we have had since DE.
Dahlen is a great OC and has lots of room to grow still.
McIntyre may be the best hire given what this defense has done already, and how much it seems to understand roles/schemes etc. lots of young guys playing which means improvement will happen too.
We do have a gamer qb finally. Maybe he doesn’t get poached since he is undersized but he may like it in Corvallis and stay. I’ve been a Beav fan since 1998 and I think Atkinson is the best QB I’ve seen at OSU after only 2 games. It may be hyperbole or recency bias, but he has a better range of throws, pocket presence and touch than DA, Mannion, Canfield. Maybe Matt Moore was better in a short stretch.
Legree may be better than Cooks too. Those were the 2 toughest defense we will face and he torched them both. He is elite Speed, great routes, great catches, and a showmanship factor that jumps off the screen.
Legree’s hands are amazing too. Never bobbles the ball.
The one handed catch out of bounds was Sportcenter top 10 worthy if he hadn’t gotten shoved out
Also attempting the 53yard FG is just insanity, great coaching and play makers all negated by 2 bad coaching decisions (the other being not going for 4th and 1)

If there was any PI ever called on TT, we wouldn’t be discussing it. Even after the fg attempt, not going for 4 & 9, I think TT knew they were in trouble until the OPI ended the game. Beavs were on the 50 yd line with 1:30 to go, 1st down, and then the play is called back and the game was essentially over. I’ve seen those plays run for TDs against OSU and it always is explained as getting caught up in the wash of movement etc. But OSU gets an instant OPI flag before the play even began.
I have been prepared to be overly critical because I expected a lot of hype and no real changes given our situation. I figured it would be another long season of a dumpster fire and Shepard would look for the first opportunity out of Corvallis. Now I’m not so sure.
Also, I am not so sure the players he is recruiting will be transferring out as we assume. Maybe there is a sea change with this athletic department and we can finally enjoy OSU sports for once. I see the point on the critiques, but I’d rather be debating those than enduring a true dumpster fire that we had the last few years.
It’s a competently coached team, there’s a bunch of gamers on the roster, and the product is relatively entertaining as well.
The new A.D. is encouraging, Canhem still is bringing in good recruits it appears, Rueck too, MBB will be better, we could be in for a resurgence of competence that may not always show up on the scoreboard right away, but that will include effort and watchability that make the program supportable.

Lanning’s problem might be that he promoted two inexperienced in-house guys to OC and DC. In the past he’s always been able to attract big-name coordinators from outside the program. Being a defensive guy, Lanning can probably help out the DC and bring him along, but the offensive side might be a problem. Kinda like how Gary Anderson had to sit by helplessly while the offense floundered.
Lanning is so unlikeable, so its fun for me piling on his douche canoe ass. Only Chip Kelly has a winning percentage better than him. Lanning just doesnt win big games for them. His 9 losses….

Funny, so apparently oregon’s OLine has been tipping their hand via how they line up and other subtleties in their pre-snap moments where Indiana discovered they could predict most of Oregon’s plays last year in the Peach Bowl.

Saw an article on PAC football rankings with #1 BSU, #2 CSU, and #3 Oregon State. CSU apparently has a good offense and QB, and a poor defense, so maybe that’s going to be a shootout….
The Athletics ranking of all FBS schools moved osu up this week from 111 to 85, with the comment: “Iowa State moves up for an unexpectedly strong effort at Iowa, even though it took the loss in its first FBS game of the season. The same goes for Oregon State, which is 0-2 but up for battling Houston and Texas Tech into the fourth quarter. The Beavers look better than projected, so there’s no need to anchor them to preseason rankings.”

BSU- winning program with a winning mentality is tough to beat, qb not so great though
OSU- Best offense in the pack, waiting for some running backs to figure it out
CSU- QB is pretty good, defense is bad, Jim Mora is back in the PAC
SDSU- no idea but many are high on them
TXST- Texas talent, I expect them to be decent
USU- Benefit of the doubt for Bronco Mendenhall to improve the defense quickly
WAZZU-qb and offense is dreadful, new everything again
FSU- qb is dreadful, looked out of their depth against USC

10 years ago I had a discussion with a customer who thought the football players received too many perks back then, ‘they get free haircuts and food in addition to their scholarship!’ Not sure we’ve discussed since but considering EVERYONE hates what NIL has done to college athletics, he’s probably checked out completely.
Everything is about controlling/limiting how much money the athletes can earn from their employers(schools) but nothing limits how much coaching staffs or the schools themselves can earn. It’s the same thimg that got them into this situation. They gave the athletes a nut and are trying to essentially go back to their original model with structured pay rather than strictly scholarships.
But as the schools keep watching their revenues increase and coaching salaries keep going up, the athletes wont stay happy for long.

I have a hard time seeing this bill hold up in court. It grants an antitrust exemption. This doesn’t work unless the athletes are allowed to unionize. It doesn’t stop the arms race either with outside players Can’t strip player amateur statuses like they would have in the past. And you can’t stop an athlete earning what they are worth. That’s pretty anti capitalisitc. Why would athletes accept a cap when they know they can get more?

Theyre really pretty similar to a Mike Leach air raid team on offense. It makes for a pretty entertaining watch, even with the lack of “star” power on the roster.

I would say Legree qualifies as being a star. Small sample size but against two P4 teams that are in the top 20. Atkinson could be a star in the making too, but he still has a way to go before we can pin that label on him. Now that defenses have some video on these guys, we will see how they adjust bc going into the season, there was little if anything to suggest these two players would be what they’ve shown so far and what the beaver’s offensive tendencies would reveal. We shall see but I’m much more optimistic despite the small sample size.
I would hold off on the Mike Leach and “Air Raid” offense comparisons just yet. The reason we are throwing the ball all over the field right not is our running game is totally non-existent. Our O-Line seems to be able to pass block decently but for some reason can’t run block. It could be our RBs aren’t great and would explain why they opened conversations with Hankersons camp a few weeks ago. Next couple of weeks should show what offense we have or want to be, especially with a couple weeks of tape on Dahlens offense now.
Last week beavs had 69 yds rushing and 403 yds passing. Take what the defense allows, right, I mean If a defense allows 19 straight runs no sense changing what’s working. But yeah doesn’t seem sustainable. Now that teams know about Atkinson and Legree they may sell out to stop them allowing more room to run and make use of draws
There was an article today(can’t remember which site, will have to find it) where Shepherd referenced Mike Leach’s philosophy of spreading the ball around and getting as many players involvednin the offense as possible. He doesn’t like the idea of handingnthe ball of to 1 guy 30 to 40 times per game while everybody else waits to get a touch. But, he did say if a RB is hot, he won’t hesitate to use them. He did coach under Leach briefly at WSU
Jacob Kreig granted another year of eligibility and lands at California. He certainly had a very disappointing season for the beavers last year with the emergence of the other kid that took over 1st base which was a major upgrade at the plate.
He’s that player on the team that you wonder how he hasn’t broken out and dominated. Good for him, maybe he’ll come through on a redemption year and get a shot at pro ball
Atkinson’s ability to throw to the open man instead of just focusing on one player should benefit other players and other spots on the field as Legree can legitimately “stretch” a defense.
I actually think the game could be entertaining tomorrow night. Hopefully the first win for the Shepard and his flock of Beavers…its too bad it didn’t happen last weekend, as that would have garnered the staff and program more praise and attention.
BTW, at some point, I think Barnes and the hiring committee may be due some credit for hiring Shepard.

Frankly I am amazed that we don’t have anything to complain about beyond sketchy blown calls by refs.
Coaching-
The staff has performed a miraculous shift even at 0-2. I’m sold on the future from these guys. This is actually the fulfillment of years of angrybeavs complaints. How many times were we told to “Be careful why you wish for” every time we demanded a departure from the Riley circle/coaching tree.
Shepard has already done more in 2 games to silence those warnings than I thought possible.
He is a better talent evaluator, motivator, fundraiser, program personality than we have had since DE.
Dahlen is a great OC and has lots of room to grow still.
McIntyre may be the best hire given what this defense has done already, and how much it seems to understand roles/schemes etc. lots of young guys playing which means improvement will happen too.
We do have a gamer qb finally. Maybe he doesn’t get poached since he is undersized but he may like it in Corvallis and stay. I’ve been a Beav fan since 1998 and I think Atkinson is the best QB I’ve seen at OSU after only 2 games. It may be hyperbole or recency bias, but he has a better range of throws, pocket presence and touch than DA, Mannion, Canfield. Maybe Matt Moore was better in a short stretch.
Legree may be better than Cooks too. Those were the 2 toughest defense we will face and he torched them both. He is elite Speed, great routes, great catches, and a showmanship factor that jumps off the screen.

So we are stuck between a first time HC in his 2nd game being reserved and measured instead of the gambler going for it on 4th down every chance he got?
If there was any PI ever called on TT, we wouldn’t be discussing it. Even after the fg attempt, not going for 4 & 9, I think TT knew they were in trouble until the OPI ended the game. Beavs were on the 50 yd line with 1:30 to go, 1st down, and then the play is called back and the game was essentially over. I’ve seen those plays run for TDs against OSU and it always is explained as getting caught up in the wash of movement etc. But OSU gets an instant OPI flag before the play even began.
I have been prepared to be overly critical because I expected a lot of hype and no real changes given our situation. I figured it would be another long season of a dumpster fire and Shepard would look for the first opportunity out of Corvallis. Now I’m not so sure.
Also, I am not so sure the players he is recruiting will be transferring out as we assume. Maybe there is a sea change with this athletic department and we can finally enjoy OSU sports for once. I see the point on the critiques, but I’d rather be debating those than enduring a true dumpster fire that we had the last few years.
It’s a competently coached team, there’s a bunch of gamers on the roster, and the product is relatively entertaining as well.
The new A.D. is encouraging, Canhem still is bringing in good recruits it appears, Rueck too, MBB will be better, we could be in for a resurgence of competence that may not always show up on the scoreboard right away, but that will include effort and watchability that make the program supportable.

Lanning’s problem might be that he promoted two inexperienced in-house guys to OC and DC. In the past he’s always been able to attract big-name coordinators from outside the program. Being a defensive guy, Lanning can probably help out the DC and bring him along, but the offensive side might be a problem. Kinda like how Gary Anderson had to sit by helplessly while the offense floundered.
There’s probably some truth to this.
Lanning is so unlikeable, so its fun for me piling on his douche canoe ass. Only Chip Kelly has a winning percentage better than him. Lanning just doesnt win big games for them. His 9 losses….

Funny, so apparently oregon’s OLine has been tipping their hand via how they line up and other subtleties in their pre-snap moments where Indiana discovered they could predict most of Oregon’s plays last year in the Peach Bowl.
This has been going in for about a year now and OK State admitted oregon still hasn’t fixed this problem and they could predict plays pre-snap as well.

Saw an article on PAC football rankings with #1 BSU, #2 CSU, and #3 Oregon State. CSU apparently has a good offense and QB, and a poor defense, so maybe that’s going to be a shootout….
The Athletics ranking of all FBS schools moved osu up this week from 111 to 85, with the comment: “Iowa State moves up for an unexpectedly strong effort at Iowa, even though it took the loss in its first FBS game of the season. BSU- winning program with a winning mentality is tough to beat, qb not so great though
OSU- Best offense in the pack, waiting for some running backs to figure it out
CSU- QB is pretty good, defense is bad, Jim Mora is back in the PAC
SDSU- no idea but many are high on them
TXST- Texas talent, I expect them to be decent
USU- Benefit of the doubt for Bronco Mendenhall to improve the defense quickly
WAZZU-qb and offense is dreadful, new everything again
FSU- qb is dreadful, looked out of their depth against USC

10 years ago I had a discussion with a customer who thought the football players received too many perks back then, ‘they get free haircuts and food in addition to their scholarship!’ Not sure we’ve discussed since but considering EVERYONE hates what NIL has done to college athletics, he’s probably checked out completely.
Everything is about controlling/limiting how much money the athletes can earn from their employers(schools) but nothing limits how much coaching staffs or the schools themselves can earn. It’s the same thimg that got them into this situation. They gave the athletes a nut and are trying to essentially go back to their original model with structured pay rather than strictly scholarships.
But as the schools keep watching their revenues increase and coaching salaries keep going up, the athletes wont stay happy for long.

That’s pretty anti capitalisitc. Why would athletes accept a cap when they know they can get more?

Theyre really pretty similar to a Mike Leach air raid team on offense. It makes for a pretty entertaining watch, even with the lack of “star” power on the roster.

I would say Legree qualifies as being a star. Small sample size but against two P4 teams that are in the top 20. Atkinson could be a star in the making too, but he still has a way to go before we can pin that label on him. Now that defenses have some video on these guys, we will see how they adjust bc going into the season, there was little if anything to suggest these two players would be what they’ve shown so far and what the beaver’s offensive tendencies would reveal. We shall see but I’m much more optimistic despite the small sample size.
It’s nice to already have an offensive identity. No having to wait 3 to 5 games for the players to grasp the concepts.

I would hold off on the Mike Leach and “Air Raid” offense comparisons just yet. The reason we are throwing the ball all over the field right not is our running game is totally non-existent. Our O-Line seems to be able to pass block decently but for some reason can’t run block. It could be our RBs aren’t great and would explain why they opened conversations with Hankersons camp a few weeks ago. Next couple of weeks should show what offense we have or want to be, especially with a couple weeks of tape on Dahlens offense now.
Last week beavs had 69 yds rushing and 403 yds passing. Take what the defense allows, right, I mean If a defense allows 19 straight runs no sense changing what’s working. But yeah doesn’t seem sustainable. Now that teams know about Atkinson and Legree they may sell out to stop them allowing more room to run and make use of draws
There was an article today(can’t remember which site, will have to find it) where Shepherd referenced Mike Leach’s philosophy of spreading the ball around and getting as many players involvednin the offense as possible. He doesn’t like the idea of handingnthe ball of to 1 guy 30 to 40 times per game while everybody else waits to get a touch. But, he did say if a RB is hot, he won’t hesitate to use them. He did coach under Leach briefly at WSU

Jacob Kreig granted another year of eligibility and lands at California. He certainly had a very disappointing season for the beavers last year with the emergence of the other kid that took over 1st base which was a major upgrade at the plate.

Atkinson’s ability to throw to the open man instead of just focusing on one player should benefit other players and other spots on the field as Legree can legitimately “stretch” a defense.
I actually think the game could be entertaining tomorrow night. Hopefully the first win for the Shepard and his flock of Beavers…its too bad it didn’t happen last weekend, as that would have garnered the staff and program more praise and attention.
BTW, at some point, I think Barnes and the hiring committee may be due some credit for hiring Shepard.

USC and the Ducks are both soft and coddled prima-donnas. I think the pressure/expectations of winning a national championship are starting to get to Lanning.
I know it’s a small thing, but what really bothers me about Lanning is something that Cristobal also used to do. Both like to say “Right?” at the end of every sentence like they are trying to control the conversation and get the listener to agree with them. It’s like they both took the same used-car salesman course., right? Just kinda makes them sound insincere and manipulative, right?
Have you noticed Shephard says “All right? Okay?” after most sentences? Once you notice it you won’t be able to ignore it

I haven’t heard Shepard enough to know whether his speaking will similarly piss me off like it does with Lanning.
For Shephard its more like a space filler. Like instead of “um” or “uh” he uses it to bridge sentences together
