I am frankly shocked at how competent we continue to look. I think on paper our talent should be inferior to last couple of years but we look so much better anyone on previous coaching and recruiting staff needs to take a serious long look in the mirror.

Some important context to consider in this relatively “fast” start; new staff, significant roster turnover, two top 25 FBS teams to start, #2 FCS team, and reasonably close to being 2-1 and potentially ranked.
I can’t recall a Riley, Andersen, or Smith coached team that started this well with this much change.

What a pleasant surprise and likeable team in the shitty context if D1 college football.
Considering where they were, I’d say its more impressive than Erickson. Riley took a year or two to get the program moving in the right direction during his first go round. Of course, a couple more wins and we’re going to start worrying about Shepherd getting another gig. Kinda counting on Dahlen getting the head gig if/when Shephard moves on given his OSU ties.
Riley’s non-con performance sucked. Taking 4 games to figure it out always hurt their bowl seeding…granted, they played at least one big non-conference foe (LSU, Penn State) in the road (Wiscy at home was decent), but I thought he always considered that their bowl experience because he didn’t expect to really earn a major bowl bid….
This year’s non con has actually benefits the beavs credibility, even considered 2 have been losses
It took Erickson some time, too. They damn near lost to Eastern Washington (21-19) and played pretty average on the road against New Mexico to start the Fiesta Bowl season.
To me, Atkinson is the key to it all.
Legree is great of course, but the drop off between Atkinson and the next man up is a huge gap. Like it goes from very entertaining football to nearly unwatchable football just like that.
He’s everything ABs have wanted out of a QB.
So I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.
Shephard said it after the game, we need to keep him upright so he can continue to do what he does and not miss time.
By the way, Atkinson was 1 TD shy of tying the school TD record tonight, and he only played 1 minute of the 2nd half.

It’s worth watching Beaver football on Saturdays again! The team looked prepared and shut down Montana’s running back. I loved seeing Coach getting the crowd into it. Transfer WRs from Texas and Alabama coming on strong to balance Legree.

I love Dahlen. Really enjoyed his interview. Seems to be qbs/plaher coach type of guy. Is flexible and is willing to work with what he’s got. He’s had a lot of great influences and seems to be taking bits and pieces from all of them. I wasn’t sure if Shepard was taking what he could get staff wise but it seems he knew what he was looking for.
We have a former 5* qb on the roster and the Ducks have 2 on their roster but I’d take Atkinson over all 3 of them.
He is the best qb in the state and probably the best qb in the PAC12 already.
Dahlen found him and brought him in, Shephard brought in the WRs.
Beavs are in good shape.
Agree Atkinson is the key. He makes it look easy. Protect him, improve run blocking and tackling, they could win the PAC.
Atkinson has plenty of arm. Not a cannon, but nice zip and catchable, accurate on the deep throws. It’s early but it his work so far is against HOU, $TT$, and a top FCS program. I like him better than Matt Moore so far. Same kind of grit and accuracy, but fewer turnovers and playing at a high levels early. At 19! Moore was a junior who had sit out a year.
Going to have to increase pay for Shepard and Dahlen, maybe McIntyre.

This is arguably the toughest part of the schedule and they’re reasonably close to being 2-1.
Keep Atkinson healthy and I doubt fans will be disappointed in effort, results, or the entertainment aspect of their play.
It will be a paradox to see uninteresting opponents but a very interesting team.
Shepard has actually created the reason to come out and watch this team. The team itself is worth watching no matter the opponent.
We used to think the reason to be at Reser was the draw of rivalries etc from the old PAC12 era, but now it is more about having a team that is simply fun to watch and you want to root for them.
I am still surprised at how competitive, competent the team is at the 3 game mark of an entirely new staff.

Music definitely more ‘contemporary,’ lighting is generally just great since the update but everything this year does seem fresh, not sure I can put a finger on it. No party in the usa though lol. They’ve either brought in fresh blood or the staff has made the changes. I get how a continuous set of staff fall into certain themes and tropes, but fresh feel today may be tired in two years too

Most of the seats around us have been abandoned in the past couple of years so there are a smattering of visiting fans and folks doing a one off game.
First game bunch of alumni carrying in age all we’re having a great time. Yesterday student section must have been full because we had a ton of students in our section, they were singing along to songs I wasn’t familiar with so that seems like a good sign. One said it’s weird sitting during a game, have you ever sat at a game to their friend lol.
Of course one fuck a couple rows back kept yelling anytime the kids stood up, wife and I told them to ignore that prick. Heaven forbid well behaved kids have fun and stand up.
Few grez fans were not having a good day, most left at the half. Family of them directly behind us, two teens were having a good time dad leans over and asks if they thought they’d ‘like to go to school here?’ so that was kind of awesome.

One particular game from 2025 still sticks in my mind, the loss to App State. There was no reason to lose that game, we were more talented at every position and then some. Even with a big crowd showing up to Bumblefuck, NC… we should have won that game similar to the Montana win.
We lost that game before the season even started.
App State, expects to win. There culture is to win. They hired a coach that won games in 2019… but, when he stopped winning in 2024, they canned him. They didn’t give him a few years to figure it out, they upgraded.
It’s a culture, and a mindset.
The sample size is small, only 6 months or so, but the mindset at OSU, at the corner of 26th and Jefferson, has started to take that turn.
Do not be impressed by competence and success, expect it.

The defense got beat deep like five or so times. The qb missed the throws but if they play a qb that’s more accurate it could really hurt this team if they don’t get it cleaned up.
That was definitely an issue, multiple missed long throws. Also I noticed their qb was only throwing to the short side of the field for most of the game. I’m guessing not elite arm strength. At first I was thinking they were so concerned with Gillman they decided to let the wrs run free and sell out on the run. To a large extent the run game for montana was a non-factor, 10 minutes left in the 3rd they still only had 41 yards rushing.
How many of those were Glasper?

If they were considered employees it would blow up the NCAA “student-athlete” mirage, and create a hornet’s nest of legal entanglements due to occupational safety, hiring practices, liability, safety, work hours and a whole host of other things that the powers that be have been side stepping for a long time.
I worked for the state of Oregon and if they are defined as employees, they will be eligible for PERS retirement bennies, health care, etc., although those bennies are not as lucrative as they used to be for say Tier 1 employees. The outcome of this decision will have far-reaching effects as I posted a few weeks ago using AI to identify those potential impacts.

My concern is, schools and other organizations that have PERS have to cover the liability if the PERS account is short. So coaches, and maybe some players may actually become a liability years after they are gone from working/playing at college. Engineering is the largest college at OSU. This will inevitably siphon students at a time of shrinking enrollments so that isn’t exactly ideal circumstances. Not sure why out of state and foreign students, by far the money makers for schools would select a school not traditionally known for engineering. But at least he’s spending money on academics, and healthcare

Beavers land a top 150 guard for 2027. I have said it before and I will say it again. Beavs should be pushing a lot of chips towards basketball. It’s easier than ever to construct a winning basketball team. Whereas football takes more time. Depending on how these guys come together and how Joyner coaches, they could be a tourney team. But Joyner has been part of a title run, so he clearly has some knowledge of how to squeeze the Orange correctly to get the proper amount of juice.

I’m more concerned with our staff getting poached mid-season ala Smith and finding less motivation for the 2nd half of the season. Not saying Shep is anything like Smith, but money is a motivator

They can stay and figure a fine start buys them plenty of time from the fans and administration. Leave ASAP, go into flop mode and voila, you are colored gone by the next team to hire you. From that point on, you as a coach are seen as damaged goods.

There was a rule change to allow this and looks like all schools are taking advantage. Usually these were done behind closed doors as secret scrimmages but no more. Maybe schools will make some money off these.
Beavs will have a very good idea of what kind of team to expect this year after those two games. They’ll learn what kind of bar they need to clear if they want to be competitive.

Wished we still had him on our OL. But with Cav as OL coach, I don’t think any of our lineman last year developed at all. He seemed to do whatever was needed even playing snaps on the DL at the end of the 2024 season when we didn’t have many DL left.
He looks pretty against Tennessee this morning as well.
