  1. Not much of an opponent, but I don’t mind the Beavs getting another tune up game given all the player and staff turnover.

Too bad they didn’t close out TT, and hopefully they can upset BSU, but otherwise they won’t have any “quality” wins on the season.

  2. Good start but need to step on UTEP in the first half. Give them no hope that they are in the game.

Also the uni combo is bad. Away games should be all white

    • It is such a great surprise how Shepard et al have them playing well early.

Also, Dahlen manages all the motion so much better than past staffs…that was all motion, no action, Dahlen is getting results.

  3. Colson Jr looks like a gamer to me….doesn’t quit on plays, good mobility. Maybe the Beaers should try to get him in the portal. Not that he’d beat out Atkinson.

  4. After all these years when I hear UTEP I still immediately think of the “UTEP two-step” by Tim Hardaway and his sweet-ass crossover dribble he had back in the day. Is that everyone or just me?

    • Not sure what he thought he saw there. The ball was high, but the receiver was tightly bracketed. Probably a little overconfident because everything was coming so easily.

  5. Sort of watching the duck game while listening to Parker. The Ducks douchy backup QB is #8, how the hell did they not retire that number after Mariota? What an insult

  6. I find it kind of odd that the MW tv guys can’t seem to locate the correct “black guy” who is the new OSU head coach. It looks like they keep following the rb coach and haven’t shown Shepard yet. Not a good look for the producers of this low budget product.

  7. Coach Shep: “I hate 15 yard penalties, we are not going to be that team!”

I’m here for it…A coach that actually cares ands has some fire. It gives the staff a reason to keep coaching the team hard. Good stuff. The 2nd half wwill be interesting to see if there is more focus. A lot of self inflicted errors and yet they are uop 20-0. Much better than last year.

  8. Shephard letting loose in the halftime interview. Did not like the penalties. I expect them to come out fast in the second half and try to put this game away and get the backups in.

  9. Beavs are no longer in a tune-up type game. THey have made enough mistakes to allow UTEP some success. Now it is time to focus and see what this team is made of during some adversity.

Quacks are going to beat USC again. I wish somehow both teams could lose. Now, the Quacks will be part of the national narrative in a positive way. The Oklahoma State loss week was fantastic!

  11. Beavs got caught up in how easy things were going early and eased up. Good response to the UTEP TD, and now the defense needs to find that killer instinct and put this game away. Offense needs to get the ball to Legree and everything else falls into place.

  12. Good win but lots of stuff to work on and not just clean up. Needed a bit of a wakeup call after rolling Montana with ease. Intensity level dropped too much that would cost them much more vs better teams. They need to know to they have to get better each week.

Start of the new PAC12 next week. The conference has played pretty poorly. And that creates an unexpected opportunity for the Beavs. They look like a top half team. Competitive in losses vs very good teams and soundly beating teams below them.

    • I just signed up for a subscription on Roku MW+ and tried to cancel but says I have no active subscriptions. The email I received after signing up said charge was still pending so I’m guessing my subscription won’t show up until that transaction hits my card…..

  13. I’m going to guess the opening line next week will be -3 or -4 in favor of the Beavs. Kind of a benefit playing at some altitude this week. Won’t be as a shock next week even with CSU much higher. Weather looks to be nice too.

  14. So glad to not be forced to watch multiple games on the MW+ network. Only plus was the ability to show up nlate and fast forward through commercials and half time. But I’ll take a real time USA or CW broadcast over that any day.

Boring game for the most part. Hope it’s not a sign of playing down to the competition and more just a sign of keeping things simple and saving some creativity for conference play. Refs seemed a little trigger happy on some penalties. The face mask wasn’t a facemask. Was nice to see Atkinson remain upright most of the game. Need to keep him healthy.
Legree makes the game look easy. Defense played well

    • Legree still got his even with a game plan supposedly designed to stop him. He also seemed to be doing a lot of chirping at miner players, first I’ve seen him do that… Hard to know if that was provoked though or not

  15. Olsen post game mentions not liking being taken down by one guy once tonight; working to be harder to drop than that.
Did BIG JIM say Olsen was targeted 5 times and made 5 catches?….seems about right.

  16. Quarter of the season done, time for a re evaluation,

I thought it was going to be a pretty rough road this year with question marks everywhere and didn’t seem like a whole lot of answers. Glad to see I was wrong. A winning season appears to be the minimum expectation now.

Nearly everyone on the team has exceeded expectations. The coaches have made the biggest difference. Guys are completely bought in.

Other than the Boise St game, Beavs should be favored in the rest of the games. Will have tough road games but this team has shown, they show up.

    • I had the same thoughts. I had no idea who the qb would be and if they would be as amazing as Atkinson has been. I also had no idea the WR room would be the most impressive we’ve had in a long time. Glad to see the team is coached really well and the players are fairly solid. I think your prediction is realistic every off season because it’ll be a lot of turnover each year.

  17. UTEP head coach Scotty Walden:

“When you play three Power 4 schools… we’re going to play good teams in the Mountain West but it will be slower than what we’ve seen in these three games. But we have to play better ultimately.”

    Beavs are back, baby

  18. Speaking of “defensive pride”, who here can forget the 3-0 win over Pitt in the Sun Bowl? I believe we could have played 8 quarters against the Panthers and still shut them out!

    • Speaking of early line, notice odds on Beavs winning the PAC12 championship have drifted from +1500 to +1000 and now stand at +650. Vegas is noticing and now has Boise State as the only team more likely to win the PAC.

I won’t be surprised if the Beavers win in Boise…they need to improve, no doubt, but I like their motivation, expectations of self (e.g. Olsen comment about getting taken down by a single tackler being unacceptable), and staff’s abilities to improve them.

It was good to see them getting TFLs. They should have, but they actually did and that’s encouraging.

  19. A couple questions for those here who do detailed research:
1-didn’t see much of Aiden Sullivan last night, eight Beavs had more tackle stats. Question is, did he play significantly less snaps than usual?
2-isn’t it time to get some snaps for a back up center in case Wells isn’t eligible for the last few games? Question is, has anyone taken snaps at C other than Wells?

  20. After four games and, unfortunately, given how weak most of the P-12 has looked so far, I will now be seriously disappointed if the Beavs don’t finish at least second or third with an 8-4 regular season record.

  21. 10

3* , 6′ 185 lb QB Zeke Thomas from Willamette High committed to OSU class of 2028. Formerly committed to Boise State, Thomas will play both football and baseball for the Beavers. 60 TDs 10 INTs in his FR and SO seasons…

“Our guys respect the game,” Lanning said

Throwing the ball 4 times on your final drive up 77 points. Scoring a TD on 1st and goal with 30 seconds left when you should have taken a knee.

Something about glass houses comes to mind coach.

    • Yeah in the context of USC celebrating the hit etc.
He asserts that his guys respect game and would never do such a thing….honestly when do the Ducks not celebrate anything and everything they do as a program?

On the human side of it, I agree with Lanning and could appreciate the brotherhood of the team in the moment when they had a teammate knocked out. But when it comes to Lanning climbing a hill for moral high ground, I laugh and mock it. The NikeU program has forfeited any rights to moral high ground in such matters. They long ago sold the proverbial program soul for attention, favor, wins, publicity & will likely use this as another opportunity for emotional manipulation in the goal for wider appeal.
I have no sympathy for Lanning’s stance in that presser. May just be my Beaver goggles speaking.

        Agree with everything you wrote.

Lanning is a fuckin chode and just makes it worse every time he opens his fuckin pie hole.

The USC player was suspended today btw

Dante Moore was NOT getting an IV after the Stillwater debacle.

Did anybody attend the watch party in Portland at Pioneer Square yesterday?
It looks like some group of protestors and “Patriots” decided to stage a protest of sorts in the area prior to the game. Curious if anybody showed up for the OSU event?

Btw, for anybody who seeing these things from a distance, these groups are organized by people who mysteriously speak both English and Russian fluently. Just like you’d expect from your everyday American Patriots.

TT #10 and HOU #20 in coaches poll. BSU coming in at about 28…. in AP TT #12, HOU #20, BSU #22….

Could the Beavers end the season in the top 25?!!?

Would be sweet if Reser were the site of the PAC championship game….

      • Paul Myerberg at USA Today used to put a lot of thought in his rankings but now he just mails in garbage. Navy, Army and Air Force at #75, #76, and #77 is a clue.

if you look at Jeff Sagarin’s “STRONG RECENT” ratings for the old Pac members, it looks like the defectors are mostly all headed to the shitter:

Nice to see several old pac members and big12 members below us.

Not sure how anyone in this new iteration of the pac will rocket anywhere in national standings as we move into conference play, based on the overall poor performance of the pac so far this year.

        • WE can rocket up by default to some extent, The other 5 conferences are not going to have any wins to jump the PAC12 as far as conference wins go. None of the P6 had a non-conference win ot boost them ahead of all others. What did happen was BSU nearly beating Oregon, OSU nearly beating both Houston and TT. In a sense the only way to rocket up is to just add a win each week. The advantage this year is SEC new schedule will add 8 more losses within their records which means that some of those teams will be 8-4 or 7-5 and not look as pretty by the end of the year. If the Beavs have the ability and good fortune to finish at 10-2, that means they will have a win over BSU, WSU, and should have a compelling argument for jumping into the top 25. There is a natural dropping for teams (except SEC teams) as they get losses 2,3,4. If the Beavs can stay at 2 losses for the entire season, they will predictably rise into the top 25.

We need to see more losses for James Madison, North Dakota St, South Florida, UMass, New Mexico, Tulsa, Toledo. It kind of comes down to about 8-10 schools who will battle for the P6 spot. I actually think the NDSU Bisons will run through the Mountain West and probably get the CFP bid in their 1st year at the FBS level. NDSU is the biggest obstacle at this point. They will eventually replace BSU as the media darling little program that is intriguing but harmless, until they rock the boat as BSU did 20 years ago.

If the Beavs had won the Texas Tech game, I think it would be the biggest non-conference win for any of the lower conferences. But a phantom OPI ended that chance. I think if the Beavs have an exciting offense and put up huge offensive numbers, plus Atkinson/Legree in the national conversation in stats, the Beavs may have a chance to move up faster.
P6 Teams to watch and root against I guess, each team has 0 or 1 loss except OSU on the list below. I think the PAC12 does have the best standing among the 6 conferences, and if an 7-2 Beavs team can beat BSU head to head in late November, it would be the launching point win to put the Beavs into the CFP conversation. This is the advantage of having BSU in the conference for football, an Gonzaga for Basketball. If every other P6 school has 1 loss, I think a 2 loss PAC12 champ with a big win at the end of the year would get the nod in the polls and the CFP bid. Whether it is BSU or OSU.
American Conference-South Florida, Army, Memphis, UTSA, Tulsa
          C-USA-Liberty
          MAC-UMASS, Toledo
MWC-North Dakota St, New Mexico, Air Force
          Sun Belt-James Madison, Louisiana
          PAC12- Boise St, Oregon St

          • Good thoughts, probably also want to root for tt and houston–todays ap has them at 12 and 20, respectively.

Just have to keep winning, one game at a time.

Winning cures all; who would have thought after the last couple of years we’d even be discussing rankings? At the very least this team has given beav fans some life again

          • That alleged phantom OPI call was on the other side of the field.

There was an article in the portland cat box liner about it last week and who the guilty party was that committed the penalty.

Personally I still think it was horseshit as it did not affect the play

Before we can dream about winning out, we need to address our lack of CB depth.
Legree might have to become a 2 way guy( he has corner experience)

  26. I was just looking at CSU stats and they are horrendous defensively, ranked 100+ in nearly every category.

By the numbers, OSU should win handily. But it is a road test, at altitude, even though Shepard dismisses that as a built in excuse.

Beavs strengths are passing and rushing the passer. CSU seems to take a lot of downfield shots, which can be good or bad. They has success against UTSA because UTSA defense was just as bad as they are. I think OSU controls the game and still wins by 2 or 3 touchdowns. Probably see a heavy dose of running backs and timely play action from the Beavs for this one.

    Beavs 42 CSU 27

    • CSU was playing their backup QB and he threw for 344 yards. What makes a difference is if their starter comes back. He can run well which is historically the beavs weakness and it doesn’t seem like they’ve figured it out this year. The backup is not a runner.

Pretty much the same gameplan as last week. Get on them early and get them to mentally check out of the game.

Don’t get cute, get the ball to the best players. Make them stop Legree

    • Absolutely. Their pass D is one of the worst in the nation. Conversely the Beavs strength offensively.

Agree with Bill below. Get on them early and get a lead will be key.

    • I hope Wells, Atikinson, Legree can sit the 4th….

OSU pass rushers might tee off…some mix of big plays both ways because of OSU DBs giving up plays…

Senate passes new legislation intended to reign in college sports and now it’s onto the House but doubtful the House votes on it before midterms.

  28. I’d guess it is 90% posturing for votes and not a serious effort to reign in anything. And it is more likely to have unintended damaging consequences rather than creating a solution.

  29. In “the best and worst of college football,” USAToday identified Jason Legree as the best freshman.

He ranks second to Smith of Ohio state with 585 yards and TDS (6) and first in YPC at 25.4.

Everyone needs to pump the breaks a bit about winning out. Remember we are only 4 games in with a lot to go. Our secondary hasn’t looked great and Montana and UTEP would have been a lot closer if the QBs didn’t miss quite a few wide open receivers. Makes me pretty nervous as Colorado State has good QBs and even a better coach in Mora. He will definitely exploit our weaknesses. It is a game we are now expected to win but as we all know, road games are hard and I think we have won one in the last 2 years (last week). Atkinson and Legree aren’t surprising anyone now. We will need to run the ball and get after the QB.

    • 10

Your concerns are valid, but I was pumping the breaks all off-season on my own expectations because I’ve been through the Charlie Brown/Peppermint Patty routine too many times with OSU football. I said wanted to be pleasantly surprised rather than buy in early on all of the rhetoric/hype and new staff etc. Well I am pleasantly surprised and will gladly shift from all breaks to all gas at this point as a fan. It is a tremendously different situation from pumping the breaks in the old Riley regime. We always knew the collapse was inevitable. We played along just because we were loyal to a fault. We enjoyed the ups and downs, without ever really believing little “Lunch-Pail U” had a chance.

Cast off the old routine of being afraid to get excited about OSU football. In the current scenario, the Beavs really are only competing against 6 other P6 schools for one CFP spot. OSU has never had better odds of getting into such a situation for the last 25 years. Why pump the breaks now? Why not hope that the staff and players seize the opportunity that is in front of them?
Also 4 game sin is 33% of the season. If we can’t get behind the team with big dreams and expectations now, when do you propose we can?

Mora is decent and brought his qb from UCONN with him. But he didn’t bring a defense good enough to stop a nose-bleed. OSU should be fine on offense and I think OSU defense is actually better than we realize. Mora is not Vince Lombardi. I’ll take my chances with OSU being just fine in this match-up.
      No Breaks, ALL GAS!!

Yeah, I don’t think CSU even remotely compares to, say, Houston or TT. I’ll take Beavs all day winning a couple touchdowns.

A rant on the “save college sports bill:”

Senate votes to protect bad college football coaches – The bill isn’t law yet. It must pass in the House, and it’s not clear whether the House has an appetite for a Senate bill that purportedly will “protect” college sports, but it’ll protect nobody more than the coach who’s getting paid millions to go 4-8, then gets paid more millions to go away.

If the bill becomes law, it would largely restore a one-time undergraduate transfer rule. That’s another win for the bad coaches. Why? Because, if athletes realize they’re playing for a stooge, they’ll be dissuaded from transferring out of the stooge’s program, if they previously burned their free transfer.

Who and what does this legislation actually “protect”? Well, it would award the NCAA an antitrust bailout and leave free and clear the exorbitant salaries for coaches and athletics department officials. The bill would not address skyrocketing buyouts for failed coaches. It makes little headway in reining in runaway spending and won’t prevent athletics departments from racking up huge deficits.

Athletes will get restrictions, while coaches get rich – If the money’s not going into athletes’ pockets, where do you think it’ll go? Where it typically goes: Into the pockets of executives and coaches (including fired coaches) and into buildings.

Exhibit A: Illinois unveiled a new video board this season that measures the length of six buses. Because, you know, a video board that’s five-bus-lengths wide simply wouldn’t be sufficient.

Exhibit B: Division I athletics facility spending would make a Russian oligarch blush. Take Clemson, for instance. Its football facilities include a slide, bowling lanes, a barber shop, a mini golf course, and a “nap room.” Let’s not just pick on Clemson. This type of overindulgence abounds throughout the FBS, where athletics departments blow through money like drunks on a Vegas bachelor party.

Exhibit C: Amid a particularly active coaching carousel in 2025, FBS schools accumulated up to nearly $270 million in possible severance costs for fired football coaches, according to an analysis by The Athletic. The real cost will be less than that, because of settlements of offset clauses, but the fact remains coaching salaries keep soaring, and so do severance packages.”

Would Clemson’s largess make an American oligarch blush? I doubt it. No gold….Ha!

      • In an age of excess and greed, why should we expect anything less than a bad bill that doesn’t actually curtail anything but give more power to the administrative level?
It will have some effect but it isn’t the panacea they will claim it to be. Of course, it will begin the real separation of schools willing to submit to these new rules, and those that are more apt to decide to be a true semi-pro league and drop the university ties.
It seems like it has been a 15 year project to break down most of the traditional elements of college football, in order to make way for a new version of semi-pro football.
ESPN is now showing the CFP and Superbowl icons side by side on their commercials, because ESPN now owns the rights to both events. That isn’t an accident, and I think they are trying to draw parallels for the fans to begin seeing them as one entity of professional football.
I think the goal was to dismantle conferences, eliminate the PAC12, disrupt traditions like the Rose Bowl or yearly rivalry games, absorb major brands into the larger population base conferences and then dismantle amatuerism, disrupt the 4 year athlete model, make fans less likely to follow only their school team and try to create more interest in the big brands as a forerunner to a new 32 team league of semi-pro “franchises” with built-in fanbases and name recognition. They have almost done it.

The argument was that NIL and the transfer portal give players a lot of flexibility, but it has obvious consequences like small school rosters are never settled, players don’t lean into working through adversity, players will tend to chase money while they can, fans of smaller schools may tend to care less since it is a revolving door roster, players won’t be known as a 4 year starter at his school any longer, coaches last about 2 years if things go south.

All of these consequences invite a solution through a ruling body. Who is to gain from any type of legislation? Do we actually believe legislation can be a fix-all for every school, or that there aren’t back-door conversations on behalf of those blue blood brands as well as ESPN?
I think the fix is in already and this will bring the death blow to what we knew as amateur collegiate sports. We will probably see a reigning in of the NIL, transfer, and spending, but the damage has already been done. In response, some of the big brands are going to push against it, demand some form of allowance to proceed on their own as unaffiliated franchises, form their own super league, along with a new CFP format that expands to 16 but only the brands from this new group of independent franchises will be allowed to participate, and guess who will have all of the broadcast rights to it?

Perhaps it could be the best thing to finally get the “haves” out of the system and allow the other 90 schools to compete on more settled footing in the traditional sense of what used to be, with regional conferences, NIL to some degree, transfer portal in a modified structure and players actually considering to stay at their school for a 4 year span.

I am Don Quixote fighting dragons that will not yield. The machinery of media, finances, and athletics will not get better. I am wistful for a past that will not reappear to me. It was probably always flawed as well, but it seemed like a better illusion than the plain faced greed we see at every turn right now from all participants involved in college sports.

Oh well, Go Beavs! If you can’t stop them, you may as well try to get a slice of the pie while you can. I hope the Beavs can make a real run at the CFP even if it only available to them this year, and even if they get boat-raced by one of those blue bloods. Although I think the Beavs could put up a good showing.

        • Thoughtful as always ohio, thank you.

Hard to pick a highlight, but this line especially struck a chord:

“It was probably always flawed as well, but it seemed like a better illusion than the plain faced greed we see at every turn right now from all participants involved in college sports.”

        • Well said.

And while the rest of the PAC besides BSU is pretty awful this season, it doesn’t mean the Beavers aren’t good and entertaining. These wins may be low quality, but the Beavers are building confidence and can develop winning habits. Sort of like BSU has done for years I guess.

I bet the SDSU home environment will be fun. I expect a good crowd but for the upper corners of the “old” side. They ought to make those really cheap and try to fill them. The Beaver’ entertaining style of play and Shepherd’s enthusiasm will then sell tickets in the future….

        • “…brands as a forerunner to a new 32 team league of semi-pro “franchises” with built-in fanbases and name recognition. They have almost done it.”

They will also have built infrastructure provided by education institutions. The teams though will become increasingly divorced though from universities missions, and the schools should lease the facilities to generate revenue and lower costs for actual students.

Should schools think about keeping their “brands” the way cities do now when their teams leave (e.g. Seattle SuperSonics). “Hey NIL collectives, mega donors, private equity and venture capitalists, don’t want to pay our lease fees and demanding upgrades to our fac? fuck off to another school with your money and free agent players. We’re keeping our name, logos, and facilities. Schools have their own “NIL,” value! Ha!

        • “Perhaps it could be the best thing to finally get the “haves” out of the system and allow the other 90 schools to compete on more settled footing in the traditional sense of what used to be, with regional conferences, NIL to some degree, transfer portal in a modified structure and players actually considering to stay at their school for a 4 year span.”

This is a scenario that I would applaud. They’ve already killed college athletics, let’s get rid of this putrid amateur/pro hybrid and get back to something that approximates amateurism, even if there is some NIL and yes I’m happy for better conditions for the ‘kids.’

      • Fuck Fox
        Fuck ESPN
        Fuck the SEC
        Fuck the B1G

Dont play any of those teams, dont have games broadcast on Fox or ESPN

All of them and their dirty money can eat a bag of dicks

        • 1
          1

I’m of two minds on this one. I also kind of like the idea of being a thorn in their side.

We all want a donor, maybe they find one but either way they need to seek inefficiencies in the system, Shepherd seems to get that based on this roster.

A few years from now with the right culture you could be a brand by winning this new PAC consistently. And they are gonna be on easily accessible TV for the most part.

I hate this bill but college sports does need some kind of fix. I think players should get NIL (walk on but can take as much outside money as you want) or school employee status (scholarship plus direct payment from college is fine be me, let donors fund it).

The transfer portal is more complicated and I’m not sure where I’m at on that. I am fine with the ‘employee status’ coming with terms that could include a multi-year commitment on both sides but NIL feels more complicated.

  32. Of 31 new coaches, USAToday ranks Shepard #13:

“13. JaMarcus Shephard, Oregon State (2-2)

Shephard has pushed the right buttons for Oregon State, which took No. 20 Houston and No. 10 Texas Tech to the limit and could be Boise State’s biggest threat in the Pac-12.”

Undefeated UCLA coach Cheney (from James Madison) at #1, Utah’s undefeated Sczlksy at #4 seem like good choices…Kiffin at #5 seems like b.s.

  33. I guess based on records, but I have a hard time believing anyone has done a better job and changing a culture and a team that was so beaten down.
The guy at Florida maybe but they were still in the SEC conference after all.

    • Is the culture really changed after only 4 games? Sure fans are a lot more positive and hopeful than they were at the end of last season, but it’s going to take more than two wins and two close losses to change the culture at Oregon State. At least Shephard is doing all the right things to change the culture, but we’re not there yet.

  34. I am nervous about this game with CSU. The last time we played in Fort Collins, we were coming off a Civil War win, local five-star Thomas Tyner came out of retirement to join the team, and we all thought Ryan Nall was going to war daddy the Rams into submission that day. We were up 17-14 in the second quarter and the wheels just fell apart with a 58-27 final score. Maybe it was the altitude, maybe it was picking Luton starting at QB over McMaryion was the wrong call (those 3 picks were killer), maybe there was too much outside noise as the team knew GA knocked up that cheerleader, but I learned my lesson that day that when you go into Fort Collins, you better not overlook them and better ready to give full effort for four full quarters at high altitude.

    • They appear to be getting quite a bit of attention and sympathy points after the cheap hit at USC …like a win over an perennially underachieving USC team has somehow revalidated them…

Lanning will still choke a game or two

      • He had multiple interviews for several days to capitalize on the drama and grab attention as the victims of USC, now he wants to move on to the next game and focus forward as he berates the press for not being ready to pivot with him quick enough. It seems like another coordinated publicity stunt by Nike to manipulate and use attention to grow the brand.
Even if it is all genuine from Lanning, the foundation, root and stem are already infected by marketing strategies at NikeU and I refuse to believe them as genuine at any point.

        • The presser he did with local media was shameful after his recent national media tour post game Saturday; not ‘playing for clicks,’ indeed

  35. Big zero says Beavs gonna be thin at CB vs CSU; Wheaton and Glasper out.
    Leaves Crandall, Houi and Thompson.

Not mentioned in the article, wasn’t Legree mentioned as a possible CB? Anyone else hear that?
Admittedly pretty unlikely he’d spend time on D.

    • Oh this sucks. I mentioned in a post a day or so ago that our CB depth is weak. This doesn’t help and Mora and their QBS have to be licking their chops. Worse news is it rumored that Wheaton is not injured and might have made quite the off-field mistake. Might not see him in the orange and black ever again. Damn.
Legree isn’t going to double down at CB. He is much too valuable at WR to risk injury and fatigue.

    • I half jokingly said Legree might have to fill in at CB earlier in the thread. Only because he does have experience as a corner in HS and I don’t doubt he could cober that position with hos speed and instint.
But seems more likely they’d pull a less used WR over to defense instead and cross fingers they don’t have any more injuries

My approach would be to play him both ways and see how he does. Prime Time showed by doing this with his best player that it is something which has a chance of working. Heck, players used to play both ways and they did fine. Young men have lots of vim and vigor to use!

  36. Apparently we’ve taken a time machine back to the1960’s and Oregon State’s opponent a week from now has several players sitting out due to the Mumps. When’s the last time you saw that in an injury report? Thought colleges required a current MMR vaccine record?

Btw, Mumps illness cases typically run for more than 2 weeks in duration.

    • Listened to a replay of big Suke in 1080 and he said UW is looking to get rid of their HC and lure Shep away from OSU so we will see. I hope these guys remember that money doesn’t bring success just ask Traitor Smith.

A crazy large amount of money does set you up for a comfortable retirement. That fucktard traitor doesn’t have to work another day for quite a while.

Money makes people abandon all reason.

Example: The entire United States government.

        • It’s also hard to see underperforming “peers” get overpaid…taking guaranteed money would be hard to resist…

“Jonathan Smith buyout – Michigan State owes Smith over $30 million if he’s fired without cause as of Dec. 1, 2025, according to USA TODAY Sports’ head coaches salaries database. He earned $7.35 million in total pay in 2025, making him the 27th highest-paid coach in college football among public institutions.”

I do think there will be an effort to retain Shepard and staff, Atkinson and Legree…probably Cole(?), but can OSU compete? Can it keep an east coast kid like Legree?

          • Use that Rose Bowl naming rights $25m that’s coming to us at the end of bowl season.
Should be more than enough to stabilize for a couple years. It’s our last payout like that, might as well out it to good use

      • That lackadaisical throw to 1st on the strikeout followed by the awful throwing error to 2nd on the steal was painful to watch. Not the Adley I remember.

        • Adley needs to reshape his body this offseason. He has gotten huge through legs and back. He no longer moves as well behind the plate and seems bound up when he swings. He moved much better in his time at OSU, and he should be in his athletic prime now. Cut some weight, gain some flexibility and get back to being an great player

  37. Saw this On3 graphic about potential conference realignment changes if they cap conferences at 20(which is idiotic anyway, why not split all of these conferences back into groups of 10 regional teams?
Their clickbait graphic has a few teams leaving the ACC(like Miami, Virginia, VTech, FSU, North Carolina) and then the ACC back filling with a bunch of G6 teams including WSU and OSU.
So basically ACC becomes the new G6 super conference that will never be able to compete with the bigger conferences financially anyway. But we’ll get to travel more!

Yep. Nike Air Jordan’s are now what grandpa wears. The kids all think Nike is goofy and don’t care about Jordan. Nike hasn’t innovated and their slave labor isn’t a good look to the younger generation. Nike is not the cool thing anymore and it is hitting them in the bank accounts financially.
Who knows if NikeU will still get their bankroll but Nike has used Oregon as its marketing strategy for college athletics for at least 2 decades. Hopefully it has run its course and Oregon falls from grace without a trophy once and for all.
Even better if the implosion begins this year and Lanning jumps off the sinking ship as the signal.
Drama queens of the Eugene Dump.

        From last year:

“Nike is forecasting it will have to pay $1 billion in additional costs because of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, the activewear giant announced Thursday.
The tariffs “represent a new and meaningful cost headwind,” said Matthew Friend, Nike’s chief financial officer on a call with analysts, adding that the company will “fully mitigate” the cost by reducing its supply chain reliance on China – and by passing the costs onto customers with price increases.”

Recent estimates say $1.5B in annualized gross tariff costs for nike… but that’s from AI so….

  38. So is SEC pushing for a 24 team format now?

“A 24-team format eliminates conference championship games, and adds a first round of games between teams ranked No. 9-24”
    ….
“The die was cast for this move when the Protect College Sports Act doubled the salary cap to $45 million. Where do you think universities are going to find an extra $22-23 million — or more, if Congress doesn’t sign off and the current funny money system continues to feed on itself?

    The playoff ATM, of course.

Which brings us to this “exclusive” negotiating window with ESPN. An absolute joke of a sham of an excuse at due diligence.

Why in the world would any fiscally prudent caretaker of tens of billions of dollars agree to a new format that expands the playoff field to 24 teams — and not see what the free market will bear?”

  39. Legree getting more national attention:

You know the saying you need 10,000 hours to master something?

Well, in that time frame — a little under 14 months — Jesse Legree has proven it may take less than that.

The Oregon State receiver has exploded onto the scene as a freshman, posting at least 100 receiving yards in all four games this season. His 585 receiving yards rank second in the Football Bowl Subdivision behind only Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith, while his six touchdown catches are tied for second nationally.

Not bad for a guy that’s been a receiver for just about 10,000 hours.

“We’ve been working a lot,” Legree told USA TODAY Sports. “To see it come to show during the season is a great feeling.”

  40. Northwestern opens its new stadium tonight:

“The state-of-the-art stadium will hold a crowd of 35,000 fans, down from the previous capacity of 47,310 at the previous Ryan Field, which was demolished in 2024.

“We really do believe this will be the best stadium to watch a football game or stadium-concert in America,” Ryan Jr. said during a USA TODAY Sports visit to Ryan Field in August. “The worst seat is only 136 feet from the sidelines.”

It sounds modeled on soccer stadiums and seems right-sized for the future…wonder if it will turn into a good home field advantage. Penn State finds out tonight…

  41. Betters and sports books are paying attention to our Beavs injury issues in the secondary it looks like. Betting line has shifted from -6.5 to -4 in the last couple of days in a few places. Still favored. Don’t touch the spread but bet the over.

  42. Clownzano interviews coach shep
    https://youtu.be/1_cSug6c9X8?is=UAYaMq4_NmKmniQk

Haven’t watched yet but teaser was coach apparently discusses people trying to get into current players about switching teams. Like shit it’s only 4 games into the season, they can’t wait until the end of the season? If they are really trying to get a handle on fixing what’s wrong with college athletics this should be one of the main topics.

Maybe the one transfer rule will help bring sanity.

      • There is! The problem is the loopholes. A univeristies head coaches agents brothers sisters ex-boyfriends nephew makes a call to show interest and make a hypothetical offer. Whole system is a joke and a huge problem.

        • Looking at the rule it’s pretty well covered but the ncaa looks the other way, and so do most institutions, apparently.

IIRC, the troll was selling MichST to his existing at osu roster BEFORE announcing he was taking the spartan job. WTF?

The one time transfer (not accounting for coaches leaving) would help.

  43. Scary game tomorrow and stats aren’t all in our favor. Gonna be a battle of offenses for sure. Saw this on X.

  44. Pretty good Friday night in college football.
    NW thumps Penn State.
Miracle in Moscow. 0-4 Vandals takes out 5-0 Montana St on a last second td and 2pt conversion.

  45. Omfg. The portland cat box liner is trying to make Lanning a saint for his handling of the Dante Moore injury and there’s an article titled “the trainer who reached Dante Moore in 4 seconds” currently.

He wasn’t on his death bed

Ducks dont play this week so they gotta come up with something for clicks

    • They will sell this as their rallying moment of the season….enjoy all the attention, then lose a game or two at the wrong time(s)….

It’s amazing how people fall for this hyperbole and false narratives. These plays and hits happen regularly, but consistent with societal norms, the ducks are at once entitled and victim.

  46. I didnt watch the game but cool to see our former RB coach and Idaho upset our former runner up HC and #1 Montana State.
Sounds like the refs botched a call and gave Idaho an extra second to pull off a hail mary play, a little like Michigan, but without the review to drag things out.

    • From what I saw this morning, it looked like the MSU coach pulled a Riley and saved up his time outs at the end of the game, instead of stopping the clock and allowing his team to to get set. Wonder what these coaches do with their saved up time outs? Trips to Cancun?

    • There was an obvious second on the clock after a 25yard gain and a 1st down. Runners hip hit the ground at :01 second left.
Refs reset the clock and everyone on offense and defense were scrambling. Vigen called the timeout to ask for a review of the clock. By calling the timeout, the clock stopped and the offense had time to hike the last play unhurried rather than in a scramble of a running clock.

Seemed like a panic timeout and made things worse than they already were.

Idaho went 75 yards in 4 plays, no timeouts and converted the 2 pt conversion to win.

      • LOL that’s like the opposite of what I (incorrectly) got looking at the cutup I saw this morning. Sounds like an entertaining game and good for Ford. BTW what is going on in Moscow that that stadium is so empty? Just watched a doc about catching Kohburger it looks like a cute town

        • What does your last sentence have to do with a football game?

And you are obviously wrong about the last second. Its out there and everyone saw it. Not Ann Arbor 2.0

    • Nope. That was not Ann Arbor 2.0 and was legit. Receiver WAS clearly down with 1 second left.

Vigen calls timeout and still gets beat.

I for one did not want him or think he was ready for FBS. Dodged a bullet there. Maybe someday though

  47. I’ve listened to coach and player interviews quite a bit recently . Given injuries to secondary, they may struggle today, but hopefully they’ll win and either way, the problems are definitely mostly (depth has often been a problem) different now.

This staff and a number of player are the real-deal, DI football. They challenge each other and have the high standards we’ve been waiting for as fans.

    • Depth will definitely be an issue all season (every season?).They need to have at least a two deep. Still building, confidence at least in this regime
