New Beaver Website

16

A new Beaver site went live today:

https://www.ourbeavernation.com

Once again I had to chuckle at the video production.

Pros:

1. Highlights the beautiful campus.
2. Strong focus on academics, not just athletics.
3. The segue where the football team hits the field was well done.
4. The music.

Cons:

1. The cheese-ball corporate looking douches listening to the radio in their cars. Are those ass clowns really OSU grads?
2. The cheese-ball corporate looking douche who scoots to catch the elevator.
3. The video, like most Beaver productions, gives a mixed message. The first part of the video is spent trying to convince the viewer of strong academics, but then at the end, when they say "A better world" they show the football team. Shouldn't that be the other way around, or does Beaver football make the world better? Thoroughly confused!

Anyway, the good news is they learned to set up a site that takes any size donation. I suggest all readers donate what they can, even if it's a few bucks (I only gave $10, and it processed just fine).

Prove that even negative Nancy's can create "A better world"…

The video is okay and the music is nice.

My issue is that there are too many images put together and they all have very different meanings. Like the kid walking out the door, the random middle aged dude listening to the radio, and the shot of the golden gate bridge. I understand that these are “symbols” of something but i also get a vibe that the guy who made this has ADD.

I saw it, and it was a little corny at times, but I think they pulled it together nicely. I’ve seen it once, and the lasting words from the video are “Oregon State athletics, the world’s window into Oregon State.”

…or something like that. It was five hours ago that I saw it, so I may have the words wrong. But I get the jist.

    I like the new video.

My only quibble is that the video should have also included a few seconds devoted to OSU baseball and OSU basketball. I mean, OSU baseball DID win back-to-back national championships a few years ago, right? And I expect that OSU basketball is on the upswing, too.

Sure, football is the most important athletic program at OSU, and the program that gets OSU valuable name-recognition around the nation. But baseball and basketball are important, too.

But, again, that’s a quibble. Overall, nice job.

I assumed they would make a vid for each sport to appeal to the various fans of each sport. But you bring up a good point. There needs to be one over-arching vid for all athletics as well.

What do you like about it?
Do you think people at Oregon, Ohio State, Florida et al would laugh at this video?
My two biggest hopes for the newfound revenue:
      1. sports psychologist
      2. overhaul of the marketing department

I like that it veers from ‘I am Orange’ first of all. I think they can play on the ‘window into Oregon State’ theme a lot more and draw interest from non-sport fans as well as die-hards.

Nothing bothers me more than hearing someone go off on some rant against athletics on any level while simultaneously extolling the virtues of book lurnin’. It’s as if these wise sages forget that we study according to the Hellenistic philosophy of wholeness in mind, body and soul. Because of these cretins, we’re losing art and athletics as viable teaching methods when they are meant to be the foundation of any education. Any kid who understands the physics of his or her own body and the wealth of structure and morality within the arts can easily succeed at book lurnin’.

That’s enough of a rant against those dufuses (dufi?).

Anyway, the vid is a little corny. but I think it’s more raw in thought than anything. I think they get their message across, but we can just call it the pilot episode. They were trying

They’re trying, but it would be nice to see them succeed.

Thing is, I never watch other university’s videos, so maybe they’ll all this bad. Only other ones I’ve seen were for Oregon, and they are badass in that “I need some Ritalin” kind of way.

UO’s ads are interesting in a ‘they still make LSD?’ kind of way. I get no feel for what they’re about, and I understand that what they think they’re good at is a lie. I guess it’s hard to show a psychiatrist doing anything in a snippet on a video. But they have managed to make everything seem cool and hip… whatever it is. And they’ve managed to commandeer the ‘O’ from tOSU.

Off the top of my head, I can come up with several ideas to play on the ‘window’ theme.

Pan away from a family (family atmosphere) eating dinner… out a window to show a house under construction… by a construction engineer. Pan out of a tare lab through a window to see some scientists working over a console… whatever the subject or set-up. Pan out of a car window into the forest. Pan out of a port hole onto the ocean. Pan out of a window into space.

Intersperse images of camera moving through a window into Gill, into a weight room, out of the Founder’s Loge and onto the field while a game (or a big play) is underway.

Then finish it off by flying up to and through a window at Valley Library… through the stacks and landing on some kid doin’ some book lurnin’.

There. It took all of two minutes to come up with that idea.

    • That’s my hope, too. That the people who read this site will donate whatever amount they can afford or want to donate. A lot of people giving a small amount adds up fast. This is why I was furious with their first campaign–it didn’t accept small donations.
