He will begin participating during the winter term.
This is great news, as he's a legit DI defensive tackle. The thought of him and Castro side by side next season is intriguing, and will help many a Beaver fan sleep better tonight.
4-star prospect Stefan McClure is taking a glance at the Beavs and they will likely get a visit. They've made some headway with Viliami Moala, due to available playing time. I still don't see either being Beavers (McClure will likely be a Bruin, but possibly a Duck), but it's nice to see some 4-stars on the list. At the very least it gives us something to be excited about before the yearly disappointment that is signing day.
There have been a lot of rumors about Davon Moreland, saying he's a soft commit to SMU. There's no concrete reason to believe this; the rumor is based off the oddity of an LA kid committing to SMU. Agreed, it is strange Moreland committed to SMU, but he hasn't shown any sign of wavering, so these rumors are simply wishful thinking that recruiting sites dangle like a carrot in order to lure in new membership. Given his offer sheet, it's equally strange Moreland would commit to OSU.
Some basketball recruiting news: Nick Faust chose Maryland.
Awesome news. He looked like a beast. Any word on Welch?
Last I heard Welch will be here at some point (December was the rumor). Haven’t heard anything in a while.
This is excellent news…only if Wynn sticks with us.
You know, I’m not as pessimistic about the talent of next year’s group, I’m just worried about the numbers.
I think Glover has been playing some decent ball, and Henry is about where he should be, considering his age. Add maybe Rosa, Crichton, and Wynn for depth and we’re not doing too badly at DE. However, one guy gets injured and we’re mcfucked with a double order of shitfries.
Fred Thompson in the middle with Castro should be pretty good…but if either of those guys go down we’re gonna have to pray we have the next Olander pop up.
Yes, I actually used Olander in a positive way…I have to say the guy has finally taken advantage of the fact that Paea is taking two guys off him and making more plays. He might actually get drafted- like…7th round.
As the guy below notes, Mana Tuivailala is intriguing. Thompson should be flat out good. Castro M, the jury is still out. He has a pattern of one great play, one terrible play. Shows potential at least. I feel better about things–it’s amazing what one solid recruit (Thompson) can do to a depth chart.
Oldander has been solid since the start of last season. I don’t see him getting drafted, though.
At Orlander’s size his only hope at the NFL level is DE. I don’t know if he is fast enough for DE though. It would be interesting to hear an NFL scouts take on him. You would be amazed how many people are actually scouted (that you wouldn’t think could even sniff a jock in the NFL) by the NFL… people worse than Orlander.
Mana Tuivailala is an interesting DT prospect too. Similar background as Paea. Got to love the DT’s that played rugby because you have to be athletic to play rugby and the ruggers always know how to tackle properly (wrap up low). I think between Frahm (I know, I know but he does know the system), Massiani, Thompson, and Tuivailala we should have some serviceable depth at the position.

McClure would be sweet. I would love a lock down corner on this team and think he could work in immediately. I am so tired of Hardin. They need to find some special 6 DB set or something for Hardin so that Riley can play him in this “special role” since we know Riley will give him time next year as a senior. How many times does he have to get burned before we start developing some depth. I keep hearing that Parker and Reynolds are a couple of the fastest guys on the team, I want to see what they can do, anyone checked them out yet? I noticed we are looking for JC help at the CB position. I really hope we can find 1 JC guy at DE, MLB, and CB that are solid. If we can find a way to put a better defense on the field next year than this year despite the loss of Paea, Orlander, and Dock we could be real time Pac-12 contenders. I think this team has enough character that we can take a few risks without spoiling the pot.
Also I am interested in the young RB’s. The Malcom’s and Ward (if he makes it). With the vertical threat of Katz there is going to be a ton of stuff underneath for some scatty type backs. Plus the scatty guys always work well in our system. I really hop Katz can figure out the short lob/drop pass over the blitz to the scat back and the screen type pass.
All in all recruiting seems slow but it is really more about how you finish anyway.
I think Ward’s already in school part time.
Anyone know?
He’s not a shifty/balance type back. He’s more of a one-cut downhill runner with a lot (and I mean a lot) of speed.
Don’t know anything about Moreland but grades could be driving his choice.
That was my first thought. Unless he’s a Methodist?
could be, or he could prefer to be a big fish in a small pond… who knows… but it sounds like it might be an offer. Sometimes offering a guy that you know wont make it can get you in the door a couple years down the road once they have a JC transfer degree.
Moreland?
Sorry, I just missed the Moreland part of the post on my first reading.
Remember a couple days before Moreland committed to SMU and Williams committed to us? I posted a comment about a friend of mine from LA telling me that Moreland was highly interested in the Beavs.
Then he went and committed to June Jones.
Email from my friend says Moreland is going to SMU come hell or high water, and he’s not happy about the rumors. He thinks they’re funny, but he’s not too happy about them.
I think in a past conversation I was told he has family in the DFW area.
I wouldn’t be happy either if a website was trying to sell memberships by inventing a rumor about me.
No kidding. The recruiting sites are fun since coaches can’t talk but there is something wrong with pestering 17 year old kids about their choice of college. Oh well. I guess I am part of the problem.
*might be worth an offer
Former USC safety Byron Moore, who’s in JC now, has scheduled a visit in January. It shows he has some legit interest in us, and he has 3 years left of eligibility. This could be a huge pickup.
Davon Moreland is visiting Oregon State this weekend, in addition to Darryl Jackson and Thomas Tyner. Colt Lyerla and Scarlett might be attending as well. Some big time recruits. Looks like I was wrong on Moreland and there is something to it.
No kidding!
What the hell is going on? I know Moreland loves Mike Riley, but do we think he’s just visiting with Josh Williams? Or do we think MR might be poaching June Jones’ recruits?
See the update to my post above….Colt Lyerla is apparently at this game. So odd.
I heard the Beavs delegated a lot of the recruiting/technology work to Gundy. Not sure if it’s coincidence that we have 5 of the highest rated guys right after that happened.
Wow, let’s hope we can put on a decent showing today!
I think Lyerla would be a great fit in Riley’s Pro-style system. He definitely would be well prepared for the NFL playing with the Beavers.
Conner Thomas finally had his offer pulled.
