As is the weekly tradition, this is our gameday thread where ya'll get to complain, whine, cheer, and mock our beloved Beavs.
I'm just going to try to block out the disappointment of last week and enjoy the game with some good food and my lady Beav. I know the bowl situation looks dire, but I'm still hoping for the Alamo until it's no longer an option, and then I'll hope for the Holiday. What I am trying to say is this: as much as I/you want to root against the Beavs out of frustration and the hope that it will ignite (coaching) change, the reality is the roster improves next season and these coaches aren't going anywhere unless they have two or three bad seasons. So, here's a call for solidarity and a strong finish. A win today and some recruiting victories (Grant kids…*cough*) and we'll all be feeling better about the future.

Originally a USC recruit, and now has Arizona, Tennessee, Washington, and Oregon State in his top-4?
OSU is also getting a visit from MARCUS PETERS? The 25th rated CB (Rivals) with offers from such schools as Washington, Utah, UNLV, Nevada to go along with Oregon State?
Anybody with more recruiting info. want to expand on this?
What about VICTOR BLACKWELL, C.J. ANDERSON, STEFAN McCLURE, DAVON MORELAND, TODD PEAT, GRANT KIDS, and (JC RB) ERIC JOHNSON (4.31 40 time)?
Pipedreams of these recruits is all we have left this year…
First off, I wouldn’t believe 40 times unless the source if verified and reliable.
Of all the big names you mentioned, I think Moreland and the Grant kids have the highest probability of signing. A lot of these guys haven’t visited yet so nobody is going to have a good feel for what they’re going to do.
Saying Moore has a 25% change of signing is arbitrary figure and just opinion. Just because he narrowed his choices to 4 schools doesn’t mean each has an equal chance.
What is interesting is that Heyward is recruiting most of these guys. Can he close the deal? If this guy becomes a solid recruiter it would be huge.
At least Heyward was a former player and can pass along his personal experiences as one to potential recruits and will have a closer connection than would a 50-60 year old white coach.
Haven’t seen/heard anything about Eric Johnson. Can’t find anything on a search. Do you have a link where I can see some info?

Funny, it just occurred to me that as OSU football fans, we should probably take a lesson from the fairer sex and not pin our hopes on the commitments of young men…at least until demonstrated.
What else CAN we pin our hopes on? Divine Intervention? Michael the Archangel and his army throwin’ on OSU uniforms and driving Stanford, USC, and Oregon into hell?
These “young men” make or break our program… recruit poorly, compete poorly.
I’m also predicting that our early bomb we always throw is successful.

You know what’s sad? If the Beavers blow out Wash. St. (like they should), then the media will just talk about how the Beavers “righted the ship” and “got back on track” and “Riley up to his late-season heroics again.”
They will act like Washington State was a huge win and how players like PANKEY “stepped up” and dominated the line of scrimmage.
Everyone will forget that Washington State is, in fact, a doormat that even a medicore OSU team should blowout.
God help us if this thing is close, or even if we lose.
If we lose this game, I don’t know what to expect. I still think next year’s talent is better, so it’s hard to say it’s all doom and gloom. But…man…there would be some major pressure to make moves with the ancillary coaches.

This one is easy: predictable play calling.
WSU is making us look silly with basic read option… the Ducks are going to score 100 on us.
I doubt 100, but probably 70.
Even the Ducks would need about six defensive or special teams TD’s to score 100. They only scored 72 against a New Mexico team that could barely execute a hand-off to the RB.
If they sacked us on every one of our offensive plays, they still wouldn’t have enough time in 60 minutes to score 100.
I’ve read this number before and just chalked it up to mouthy Duck fans getting after it. So I know it’s not your idea. But anyone who has an inkling of an idea about football should dismiss this idea out of hand.
50-60 will be excessive, and the Ducks will likely do it.

It’s a wide open competition at this point. Ryan peaked against Arizona and it’s been down hill since. Read progression is too slow, and by the time the pocket collapses, albeit quite quickly a lot of the time, he’s still locked on option 1. Or so it seems.

I’ve only watched his HS film. I remember thinking he was savvy in the pocket. Definitely less mobile, but savvy and smart throws. I think he has better intangibles than Katz. We’ll see…he’ll probably look terrible since this line can’t keep anyone upright and there’s no run game.
Haha. Cody is a good kid. He’s a gym rat, see him in there by himself pretty much every time I stop by. He doesn’t have any experience though, and he’s young, but he’s definitely the kind of guy I wouldn’t mind having back me up in a street fight.

This is something that requires a lot of long, hard analysis. We should spend next week looking at what the real problem is here…there are a lot of theories but many of them don’t make sense since they have had success with this system.
The fact that Riley can’t beat teams who run a spread offense is telling.
It’s a big problem since OSU will have to go through Oregon every year now if they want the Rose Bowl… and he can’t beat them.
Riley seems to have lost this team in some way and I cannot quite figure it out. Even in 2005, they played with intensity, but went through growing pains with Matt Moore and his 19 interceptions. This feels different.

My dad is at the game and he texted me this: “worst half osu has ever played-ever” Ya, he’s 53 and has seen a lot of football…including the 28 bad seasons. so that’s saying something. We will not go to a bowl game this year. I guarantee you people will sell their OSU tickets to duck fans and say, here, we’re crap and you go watch a glorified scrimmage…cause that’s what it’s looking like. Funny thing is the Beavs offered Katz over Tuel. “Shoveler”, the recruiting guru on blitz, said it was a great pick, and that Tuel wasn’t very good. There’s a difference between a good college and pro QB (and system as a whole); Riley’s NFL experience has skewed him. He didn’t offer Kellen Moore, either, who would have signed in a heartbeat .

All I have to say is thankful that guys like Pankey and Kahut(been horrible with everything this year) are graduating next year. We will be much more talented all around.

The lifetime contract that Riley got was the worst possible thing to happen to this program. I am hoping after going 4-8 this year our whole staff will be shaken up. The complacency on this team is shocking, absolutely no passion from the majority of the players. I watched the players on the sideline before the game and during the first half and all I saw was total disinterest. Some were yawning, others were chummin it up with some former players during Wazzu’s first scoring play and the most disconcerting was some of the o-lineman not knowing we got the ball back with 30 some seconds left in the half. When I saw that the players didn’t care that’s when I decided they didn’t need me there to root them on. I thought for sure after the first play when Quizz was tackled 15 yds out of bounds that the players would come alive but instead they curled up like a little kitten. This was the most pathetic showing I’ve seen from an OSU team in years.

He’s been doing that a lot this year…he’s not as good as last year for whatever reason…line, play calling, off season weight lifting…whatever you want to pin it on.
Anyway, he’s the last player we should be spending time criticizing so I’ll stop now.

I understand your frustration, and I share it, but there is a small fallacy in your logic.
Not all football players are good, some are much better than others, this is true. Every program should compete like hell with the means that they have to go after the best players that they feel will have the biggest impact on their team.
But, good players can come and often do come from all sources; scholarship, walk-on, transfer, and grey-shirt alike.
Some of the greatest “players” in college football and beaver history have had little, if any stars next to their names out of high school (J. Smith, K. Simonton, M.Hass etc).
But, football is an emotional game, a physical game, a man’s game.
We are not “finding out what happens when a football starting lineup is populated by walk-ons.”
Some of the best teams I’ve ever seen, played with, or played against, have been loaded with “walk-ons”.
We are finding out what happens when your starting lineup is soft, has zero confidence, and executes very, very poorly.
I am as frustrated as any other fan on this site. I’m disappointed because our team is playing like big sissies across the board, and that’s not OSU football, and that’s not how we are successful. But in reality, that has nothing to do with how many stars our players have next to their name on rivals.com, or whether they walked on.
That’s not, and never will be what makes successful football teams at OSU.
For every Smith and Hass there’s 10 Grant Johnson’s.

Talent matters. It’s not everything, but there needs to be a certain level of it, and the notion that 120 programs with 5-10 recruiters per staff missed on all the Beaver walk-ons is naive.
Talent is damn near everything.
However, whether a player is a walk-on or not can have little to do with how good of football player they are.
Our team sucks because the players are playing like shit, and we should have much better players in key positions (e.g. the offensive line)
But, they don’t suck BECAUSE they are walk-ons. They suck because they suck.
What you’re saying is that some walk-ons are good, and I agree, but most aren’t, which is why they don’t get scholarships. The reverse argument would be equally ridiculous–that all 5-stars are great. They aren’t, but most are productive college players.
The offensive line works as a cohesive unit, so if you put three of these guys on your line, the problem becomes exponentially worse. It’s negative synergy.
Anyway, I think ultimately we agree. Even if we don’t, who cares?

I agree. I always measure my level of care by the amount of liquor I drink. I only had 1 today, and not until the 4th quarter when the Lady Beav started dinner.
Versus BSU I had about 4 by kickoff. It’s a trusty gauge.
Oh, something else worth mentioning: the flipside of this is that if fans don’t care, the AD et al won’t care. So, while we may not be emotionally involved, I think we have to keep the heat on and demand some things on a big picture scale.
Oh, and I have Wheaton going versus Quatre today in the fantasy league. That’s gotta sting, good sir.
It’s not that I don’t care. It’s that I’ve already seen this kind of football out of our team, and I’m not going to waste my energy getting upset about it any more this year.
It’s never been a personal affront to anyone if I note that they play poorly… even consistently poorly. I won’t stop telling the truth because some loopy fan thinks it is, and I’m not going to take it personally as a fan that my team has decided to pack it in.

I’m right there with you on this one. I’ll still go to the USC and CW games, but I’m putting more effort into the menu of our tailgate than worrying/caring about the outcomes of the games.
Like others have said, 4-8 is more likely to affect change than 7-5 with a crappy bowl.

First home game i’ve missed since i moved back to Portland in 2007. Stayed home because i hate 1:00 p.m. kickoffs and i had a bad feeling about the game. It ended even worse than i thought it would be. What’s amazing is how bad the team has become. Most of these guys are returning starters. 223 yards rushing by WSU. Oregon is going to hang 100 on us. Wow.
So OSU basketball plays UT-Arlington at home tomorrow. Radio only affair. Here’s to Basketball season!!!

I kind of like the fact that the Riley mystic is blown up (for the time being anyway). I for one did not think the slow starts every year and then the recovery were a sign of good coaching. I thought they signaled a lack of pre-season preparation and opportunity lost. I wonder how the media will spin this one or will the gloves come off? Beaver Nation is content with 8-5 and any bowl game, they will not be content with 4-8. Again, I think Riley will survive always survive on his good guyness, I mean he got 48 games in the NFL before getting fired.
I don’t mind Riley, it’s his assistants I have a problem with. Langsdork needs to get fired or be removed from calling the plays for the rest of the season. Then it’s Banker who needs the boot if Oregon blows us out again in the CW. complacency is not acceptable. Riley’s system can work as long as we call the right plays….which we don’t…hence the problem.
I am not so much talking about Riley as head coach, but the aura (for lack of a better word) that he has been able to create at OSU. Lunch Pail U., slow start but brings his team together, finds walk-ons, low rated recruits and coaches them up. There is some truth to those things, but it is over emphasized by the media who continue to give the program a pass because of how approachable and accessible he is.
Man, watching Cal/Oregon is such a different experience. Fast players who look like athletes, high definition TV, etc.

I just quietly observed it to myself in the past games. But OSU have never managed to score more than one TD on the fourth quarter.
The announcer is busy praising James for his lead block for Thomas on the read keep. That block is illegal when he goes low outside the tackle box or comes from outside the tackle box and goes low into it.
Why is he praising him?

I have been a season ticket holder for many years and today was the most embarrassing game I have ever witnessed. Our football team acted like they didn’t want to be there, and as it turned out they really didn’t show up. Mike Riley has to take the blame for this. It is his job to get these kids ready to play and more often than not the beavs are not ready. I am tired of the nice guy approach that Riley takes. Its time for him to blow up and either step down or cut some assistant coaches. I would also like to mention that their is no leadership being displayed by any beaver players. It is a total team playing with no fire, no passion, no heart. It will be hard for me to renew my season tickets that I have owned for almost twenty years.
I am a diehard Bevaer but considering not continuing my season tickets next year. I see way too much of the same old and now worse and we never got higher than a Sun Bowl appearance. Then we only scored 3 points in that Sun Bowl so why are we rewarding Riley so handsomely for nothing all that special? Under Riley we are likely to have many 6-6 7-5 teams, make a bunch of Vegas, Hunger and New Mexico Bowls and not much else. He will then be extended for such lame results and could be around as long as 2028 for every year he makes a crap bowl since he already is guaranteed through 2019. Atleast this year he isn’t being extended.
CHANGE is one thing I always want the program to be capable of. You have to continually evolve but Bobby D was so dumb and set up this contrcat that literally makes us one of the most stagnant programs I can think of.
I first want to see Langsdorf and Banker face losing their coordianator positions. Someone needs to get the axe this offseason. I personally would rather replace the whole lot and bring in Bellotti.
I just know in my heart that OSU is never going anywhere higher than our last Sun Bowl until we are willing to shake things up and try a new coordinator or two at minimum. Riley has his ole boys network in place, along with Bobby D too content with poor results, and nothing is gonna ever get Riley to react until Bobby probably forces him to change a coordinator. I think Bobby is too much a coward to do that yet even though the time has definitely come. Nothing would be worse to me than 16-17 more years of 6-6 or 7-5 or maybe worse and Hunger, Vegas and New Mexico bowls.
Find a coach who is capable of bringing us to some national relevance and hire him and forge a new identity we can all get behind. Riley’s record is something like 1-23 against ranked opponents on national TV, especially in early games. They said it during the TCU and BSU games. He NEVER really wns the ones that matter most. Never has over 10 years and still won’t. Not someone we should be giving 15+ more years which is what will happen as long as he goes 6-6 most years. Not a future I want to support that much.
Something has to change….and we should not be asked to wait any longer.
Tell Bobby D that you are not considering renewing your tix. I am sure that if enough fans say the same thing he will pressure changes. As was said earlier, money talks. If 5000 fans said I am not renewing my season tickets because of Mark Banker then we might have another defensive coordinator.
You know I find it ironic that a large majority of Beaver Fans, myself included, were scared that USC was going to get Riley. And a lot of us were happy when Bobby D offered him an offer that made him stay… ironic.

This breaks my heart. He should be having the best years of his career right now and he has to go through this. I think that things will be figured out within the next couple years and we will get back on track, but it will sure be a shame when this guy is gone.

Another thing to consider, just think how bad this team would be if they turned the ball over at a normal rate of say 2 times a game? When you think about it, the only thing this team does well is ball security. A turnover here and there and this team could easily be 1-8. If you look at the overall stats for the O and the D, you would think that, but then you see only 7 turnovers in 9 games.
Great point. 1-8, that is scary. They’re very good at punt and kick returns, too. Worse now without Rodgers, but they’re still pretty good at it.
I can see both of your points here, but we can’t start playing the “what if” game. IF we want to do that, then look at both sides of the coin knowing that better play calling and defensive coaching could have brought us into this game with zero losses in the Pac-10.
Since we have a solid return game and don’t give away the ball often, at least that’s a few things were good at right now or bright spots in a pretty gloomy lockerroom. Can’t say that for too many other areas of their game.
I am not really playing the what if game. More just mentioning that the statistics point to an even worse record than 4-5, so that they are no illusions from the apologists that think this is a good team. Usually bad teams also have poor ball security, but this team just has not turned the ball over very often the last season and three quarters with big thanks to Jacquizz mostly.
I kind of lump that under special teams which if you consider punting and kicking, they are not very good overall. Definitely, good when James was healthy and as you have mentioned it kept the games close.
Good point. Their Special Teams overall isn’t quality and I do understand what you’re getting at. Hopefully we can get a much better effort from the team moving forward.
I saw a lot of comments from early in the game predicting fights in the game. I really wish that some fighting had occurred. Fighting would have meant that someone actually cared. I think WSU got in our heads on the first offensive play with their aggressive play. It was at that moment that the team realized that if they had to fight for a win it wasn’t worth it. This team is full of pussies. It is evidenced by their tackling, nearly every player tackles with his arms only and head down. Our players then lunge at them hoping to grab an ankle to make a tackle. It is as if they are afraid to hit. A solid hit includes using part of the helmet and all of the shoulder pads while wrapping the guy up. A collision with the waist/chest of an opponent is a sure tackle. The poor tackling is clearly a technique that is being taught and it is plain wrong. Whichever coach is teaching this technique has to be the worst football coach in the history of man. I would rather die than teach technique like that.
Quizz has to be the only player with heart left. I sure hope he goes to the NFL and gets whatever money he can, he is currently wearing out his body for teammates that don’t care enough to try for him. It pisses me off to no end that he is trying hard for this team and the rest of them disrespect him so much that they don’t even try.
Paea is overrated, he is not a first round pick. If he is, he is a bust. Fast and strong are not enough to be a good football player, you have to be able to tackle. Paea tackled like Pankey today, watch the tape.
Yeah, I dont know that people can say the Paea has been dominating. From reading the pre-season hype, I was expecting a senior season like Suh had last year for Nebraska (and I am sure he was double teamed also every down also).
I was at Reser and it was painful to watch. I don’t know what they showed on TV, but I know what I saw. Many OSU players gave up in the fourth quarter. Even Quizz looked disheartened — like he had lost faith in his teammates (for good reason…)
This game felt completely different than the loss to the Huskies and the loss to UCLA. In those games, most of the Beavs (not all, but most….) seemed to be giving 100% (to the extent I could tell while watching on TV). Against WSU, in Q4, many Beavs mailed it in. And I have zero doubt about that, because I saw it in person, up close.
The next three games will be very interesting. Riley knows he is close to losing this team. If the Beavs play like this against USC next Saturday at Reser, it’s going to get ugly — very ugly. And that will have impact far beyond the current disappointing season. It will hurt OSU recruiting. It will damage the psyche of key players (including Ryan Katz, who is clearly losing confidence). And it may even cause the Rodgers brothers to bolt after this season (although I still believe that’s unlikely).
Can Riley and his staff get this team — this WHOLE team — to play hard again, to come out strong against USC next Saturday, and to give 100% for the entire game? We’ll see in 6 more days. I think a lot is riding on the answer….
A lot sure is riding on the answer. I sure hope the Rodgers brothers bolt. I would hate for them to stick around and get injured anymore playing for a team that doesn’t respect them.
For those who think OSU and Bobby-D need a major wake-up call — imagine the Rodgers brothers announcing that they are not coming back to the Beavers next year.
Sure, money talks, and season ticket sales matter. But remember that LOTS more money will soon be coming into the program through PAC-12 media revenues, etc.
Meanwhile, for a short term jolt, it’s hard to imagine anything bigger or more powerful than the Rodgers brothers giving up on OSU and walking. If that happens, there will be changes, guaranteed….

The team won’t get it if you nurture their lack rather then kick them in the ass. The best thing he could do to save next year is act now, and act tough.
I would have came out stern and said to this team that come Monday no one’s position is secure including my coaches.
This would at least let prospective recruits know a couple things… 1) if I’m good enough I can play. 2) Riley wants to win (because right now it isn’t a passion) 3) Riley is willing to do what it takes.
You know the way WSU has been playing they were bound to win a Pac-10 game sooner or later. They are much better than their record indicates. I think that it took them so long to finally win one because every team they face played with the attitude “we are not going to be the team that lets the Cougs break their streak.” And that is what makes me so sad and disappointed in this team. They played like they didn’t care whether or not the Cougs broke the streak against them. They are the least motivated team in the Pac-10. No more excuses. I don’t think I can listen to interviews or read practice reports anymore because I don’t want to hear it. Also I know Riley wont do it but play young guys and next year have competition and select the starters based on skill level.
I think this team’s spirit died once they lost James Rodgers. If that’s the case, than James Rodgers was their senior leadership for this team….and now that he’s gone…we’ve gone to heck in a hand basket. Ever since the UW game where they fought back to have a chance to win it, they have said, screw showing up to play. Why show up and do our best when we couldn’t even beat the huskies!? Sure we beat CAL single handedly, but I think that blowout game did more harm than good. The team probably thought, shoot! We found our rythmn! We’re THERE! We don’t need to work hard anymore! Once they go play at UCLA, they lost when they found out that they didn’t show up and bellied up on the fans and the game. They did the same thing against WSU! I don’t see us winning, or being close in any of the next 3 games with this attitude. This team has died. We’ll finish the season 4-8 at this rate..maybe 5-7 if we’re lucky, but I’m not seeing it.
I too feel bad for Jacquizz, this is the worst offensive line OSU has had EVER! Walk-ons won’t get the job done, but when the announcers say that this team is being handled easily….they see a problem. Put in back ups now, get ready for next season if the starters are going to belly up right now. I would much rather see the future than see a team that is dead on the inside.
Riley should be the one who sets the attitude and mood for the team, not James. My dad said the same thing and although it may be true, what I’m saying is Riley is not doing his job… JR is.

We want change for the following reasons:A, B, C… not “this team sucks and so does Riley.” We’re all especially pissed right now but I think logically thought-out comments will carry more weight. I am a season ticket holder of 4 years. Each year I have upgraded my seats as my budget allows. I support OSU football because of the workmanlike attitude the team portrays, because it is a clean program that I can be proud of, and most importantly, because of the promise of improving into a legitimate Rose Bowl contender on a somewhat regular basis.
I am seriously disappointed in this team’s performance, especially the coaching staff.
Is it too much to ask that the coaches and players put as much effort into their OSU football careers as I put into earning the money that I donate to their university each year? Really that’s all it comes down to doesn’t it?
Why would I continue to donate well over $1,000 each year plus ticket costs, plus driving from Hillsboro, plus traveling to several away games each year when:
a) The coaching staff isn’t willing to try something different when they are losing.
b) Mike Riley doesn’t try something different in our recruiting department so we get better athletes.
c) The players flat-out quit like they did against WSU.
Picture this… me working at my job this coming Monday morning, saving some of the money I earn to give to OSU next year. Would you continue to give your hard-earned money to a staff that doesn’t appear to be trying as hard as I do to succeed? I am moderately successful even in this tight economy because I do not accept mediocrity. Why would I support a program that shows that lower-level bowls (or possibly none this year) is Ok performance?
I want to be proud of Beaver football. I want to see the improvements shown since the 1990’s continue, not stagnate.

I’m going to the Beaver chalk-talk this Friday at the Rosegarden just to see Riley’s demeanor. If he gets a standing ovation when he walks in the room like he usually does then, well I dunno. Too many myopiates amongst us I guess.
Well, he used your name and addressed your concern, so it’s not canned. You can’t expect a personalized in-depth response–the guy probably gets swamped with emails. Bob’s always been good responding to issues we write about here. I like the guy in general.
James Rodgers has one of the best attitudes in college football. He brings so much of the intangibles. A great leader and he knows that all the small details are what produce first downs, longer drives and possession and ultimately a shot at frequent touchdowns. Halahuni, Wheaton and Quizz are our smartest players now but Bishop and nichols need to step up more and Katz needs to learn to throw it away as long as no longs will be thrown. I don’t think he has thrown it out of bounds more than once this year. Riley isn’t teaching that skill and getting sacked for minus 12 just hurts too much for getting needed first downs and getting in rythum.
Katz and Wheaton actually need to connect on some of these long pass plays and it would open up some other dimensions to the offense. I guess that will come with maturity.
I dont know if Angry will bother doing thoughts on USC (cannot blame him if he does not), but I will say this…the Beavs usually play better against pro-style teams, but a win may just prolong the agony. A blow-out loss at home against a good, but not great USC team will say a lot about whether Riley really has control of this team anymore.
