Below is the scouting report on Texas Southern, taken from the Beavers official site:
Texas Southern returns seven letter winners and two starters from a team that went 17-16 last season and 11-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Tony B. Harvey is in his third year as the head coach and as 24-41 record in his first two seasons. The Tigers are 0-3 this season with losses to Drake, Wichita State and Oklahoma. Kevin Galloway led Texas Southern with 19 points in an 82-52 loss to the Sooners on Thursday night. He's a transfer from Kentucky competing in his first year and had 20 points against the Shockers and eight in his first game against Drake. Redshirt freshman Lawrence Johnson-Danner had 22 points against Wichita State and 11 against Oklahoma. The Tigers have nine players on their roster during their current five-game road trip.
The bottom line is that Texas Southern has some experience and Kentucky transfer. They have no wins, and they're in the 4th game of a 5 game road trip, so they'll be hungry. It would be nice if the Beavers athleticism began transferring to wins on the court, but what we're going through now are growing pains. The Beavers need to learn how to win, and there are different types of wins, such as holding on when ahead (Seattle), coming from behind, and winning when the pressure is on. They need to learn all of these before they can be considered a good team. Right now they are a below average team with a lot of promise.
What I'll be looking for (or listening, since the game is only available on gametracker) are improved, sound fundamentals, specifically free throw shooting and rebounding. The basics of the game must improve and come naturally for the players before fans see dramatic improvement.
At some point soon, these are the type of games that the Beavers needs to win by 15-20 points going away. I know we have discussed it before, but to make the NIT (and gasp even the big tournament) the 6-6 type of non-conference records will not cut it anymore. They get a mulligan against Seattle, but that is about all they can afford. Colorado and UAB look like they may be tough.
You might get a live feed…. someone is usually recording the games from the upper media area. I was mad no one was streaming the Seattle U game though. I don’t pay for cable TV anymore. I will be cheering the team on in the stands, although my throat is kind of sore from last night. Go Beavs! Does anyone with a sweet cable package have the ability to stream future games? I would think we would want to set it up via e-mail and keep it small just so it is not too risky but that would be sweet for the rest of us.
Just saw we landed another DE, a JC speed rush guy. I am wondering why we signed so many DE’s. I wonder if Jawsha is going to be a linebacker? Or if some of the bigger DE’s will go as undersized DT’s (robbins and Bennett)? Seems kind of pointless to have a speed rush specialist with so many teams running hurry-up offenses it will be tough to get in 3rd down packages. Jawsha and Rusty seem like guys that could play LB. I got to think that the staff isn’t planning on playing all 5 at DE. Looking like it could be a pretty decent recruiting class.
He’s 6’3″ and 205 according to this post on Pure Orange.
http://www.pure-orange.net/cgi/anyboard.cgi/bscrecruiting?cmd=get&cG=33338353&zu=33333736&v=2&gV=0&p=
205 isn’t cutting it for a DE. It’s bad enough being 240 when you have to deal with the roadgraders (OG) when they come around the corner.

Thanks for the link angry!
Wow nice crowd(not really)
Angry, how is the video working for you? mine has been going slow
Same, slow and choppy. I’m resorting to gametracker.
Kevin Mcshane scores. Angry I know you love seeing him in there already
The video is way ahead of Parker on KPAM. Are these feeds usually better? Kind of cool that this stuff is available.
Video feed just got a lot better for me.
Yeah, video feed suddenly got really good. Before the video was really slow for me
Beavers need more consistent outside shooting from Lathen since that’s why he’s in there to begin with.
it is also slow and stalls for me
I just listen online through the kpam.com website
My feed is much better, but Parker is on such a delay I may switch to Gametracker. What is with KPAM? Are they worried that Mike will start dropping f-bombs???
The Beavers mistakes tonight are much different than previous 2 games. Overpassing has caused turnovers but that happens sometimes. They’re shooting better and finishing near the rim I like to see that.
Calvin seems to have found the touch and is not just standing around holding the ball offensively.
Angry – I registered some time ago but I have to enter my name and e-mail address every time I want to post a msg.
Am I doing something wrong?
Also I periodically clean up my computer so the cookies get wiped out when I do that. Could that be the problem?

Enter your email and password, and then click to always stay logged in. If you clean your cookies, you’ll have to enter the information again, but otherwise it should keep you logged in. Let me know if it doesn’t–I’m researching some new themes so I need to keep track of the glitches with this one.
It’s not working. At first I was entering my screen name “Mud&Sticks” and password. After seeing your reply I did as you suggested and entered my e-mail address and password. It didn’t like that either. It gave me an “Invalid username” error message. Could it be that it now doesn’t like “&”. It accepted it (&) when I first registered.
I just looked you up in the directory, and I don’t see you as having ever registered. That’s probably the problem. Make sure you register an account first. You can do it here, just enter a username and email.
http://angrybeavs.com/wp-login.php?action=register
Update: A couple things for you.
The register link you gave me takes me to a window that’s different than the window I see when I go the “Register” route on your website.
The link you posted for me asks for “Username” and “E-Mail” where as if I go in by clicking on “Register” and then clicking on the link I see a screen that asks for “Username” and “Password”.
The other thing I found was when I use the link you provided it doesn’t like the anpersan (&) in my Username.
Any chance you could have it set up so we could use special characters in our usernames?
The system has sent me a password – YIKES!!! Am I allowed to change that to something else or do I have to use the one sent to me?
Hope this helps.
You can change your password in your admin panel. Or, if you can’t figure that out, email me (angry@angrybeavs.com) and let me know what you want it to be and I’ll change it.
Thanks. I’ve changed my password.
One more thing:
When I registered using the password that was e-mailed to me I didn’t see a link for getting to http://angrybeavs.com/ so I clicked on the “Dashboard” icon.
Should we as users have the Dashboard page in our Favorites or should we be bookmarking http://angrybeavs.com/
Thanks
For the heck of it I clicked on “Forgot your password?”
I entered my e-mail address and got an error message saying “There is no user registered with that e-mail address”.
Deane and McShane on the court at the same time?! Craig must be losing it
Is it beyond the abilities of mere mortals to get Daniel Deane to stop missing layups?
Is Murphy injured or has not shown enough to be part of the non-conf rotation?
I don’t believe Murphy is fully recovered from his injury from last year heard he was like 85% about a week ago and I’m guessing Coach Rob doesn’t want to rush him back.
Thanks, I was wondering why he was not getting any minutes.
Now Lathen is 4/17 from deep on the season that is a problem. If he can’t consistently hit 3’s you just can’t play him much
Dang, a 3 went in when clock went zero
Benny is seriously the ugliest mascot in the NCAA. Did you guys see the closeup of those chompers? Wow.
They need to revamp him big time.
Beavers are not traditionally aggresive animals unless maybe they have rabies.
I wonder if Oregon State will have an annual N7 Game. I like to see it with myself being a Native American it would be good to see this become an annual tradition. They should see if they get some better opponents for these games as well.
Wallace with yet another missed 3 …..sigh
Turns out Rhys Murphy is healthy now glad he’s finally playing
Rhys just looks nervous and unsure of himself
Excellent point by Mike Parker the crowd is dead not sure why that would be. Why even come to the game if you’re not gonna get excited and make noise?
The Beavers are a bad team.
Not saying they’re a really good team but they’re winning the game it’s not as if they’re down 20
Do you know what a “good” team would do to Texas Southern?
Even an average team.
Anyway, they leave guys wide open for 3, can’t make free throws, play with no rhythm on offense, go for flashy passes instead of smart play, etc. They’re just a bad team.
Yes that is true. I had hopes this team could play in the NIT this year but seems nothing has changed. It really is disappointing.
The Beavs are once again scrambling at the end to try to comeback.
Coach Rob can recruit but can he coach?
He was a better coach last year when they played methodical. This idea they can run and pass like the globetrotters is killing them.
Yeah, his coaching ability has certainly become questionable. But it isn’t his fault the team is continually late to get to shooters and Lathen suddenly can’t shoot anymore.
Unbelievable this is just painful to watch
It’s really bad basketball. Nobody seems to know what they’re doing. They play sloppy and out of control, with no concept of team play.
I like Starks–you can see confidence in his eyes. He should replace Haynes permanently.
Haha, as I type that.
A fitting end, blowing a WIDE open layup not shocking I expected that
Starks did everything right except….
But I think he’s going to be good.
bwdik
How many times this season will I hear – “and he missed the layup” ?
It’s crystal clear the Beavs think they’re better than they are because they (a) play in the pac-10 and (b) signed good recruiting classes.
The Beavers should be better than what they’ve shown on the court. No way they should lose a game to Texas Southern
@home.
It has crossed my mind that maybe Craig is just a good recruiter and not a good coach. The way this years team is playing it hasn’t exactly given me confidence.
Starks will be a good one for sure. Lathen and Calvin need a lot less playing time. They’re the most difficult to watch. They have good stretches but then they turn around and play terrible basketball.
Is it O.K. to say that the way substitutions were handled cost OSU the game?
So will every no name team have a no name player that goes for 20 plus on the Beavers during the non-conference schedule? I mean practice is to get ready and perform in games right? At some point, if this team is not going to be very good, do you just play the underclassmen?
Yes.
Yes again.
As I said on this blog after the prior game, Coach Robinson needs to bite the bullet, relegate Calvin and Lathen to the bench for most of every game, and play the young guys. As for Deane and McShane, I’d very rarely play them, except in garbage time.
Ahmad Starks is a true point guard and I think he is going to be a good one. Make him the starting point guard asap, and give him most of the minutes at that position from now on.
Cunningham and Roberto Nelson are going to be superior players at shooting guard. Again, give Cunningham most of the minutes now, and then get Nelson involved as soon as he’s eligible.
The frontcourt talent is not as strong yet, but Coach Rob still needs to play the younger guys to find out what he’s got there, if anything. I’d still play Omari, some, because I think the Beavs need Omari in the game at the moment to be competitive. But the more experience Coach Rob can get for the younger guys up front, the better (especially for Devon Collier, Eric Moreland, and, to a lesser extent, for Joe Burton).
Meanwhile, keep recruiting big guys aggressively until you land some better front court talent, to go along with Starks, Cunningham, and Nelson in the backcourt.
They desperately need some big bodies.
I completely agree.
Joe Burton has a wide body, he plays hard, and he rebounds aggressively. But Joe Burton is undersized at 6’7″ (I have shaken hands with JB and I’m estimating that he’s actually a bit less than 6’7″). He’s also slow afoot.
Eric Moreland and Devon Collier are projects. They may pan out (or they may not). But neither looks to be a great rebounder.
The Beavs need one or two players who can box out and command the defensive boards. Otherwise, OSU will have serious problems all year (as already shown graphically in the game against Seattle U., where the Beavs in the second half repeatedly gave up offensive rebounds to guys who wouldn’t even be bench warmers in the PAC-10).
Good points, and for all of the pre-season talk about athleticism, the team had exactly zero blocked shots last night.
I cannot believe two years later this team is still missing a leader like Ricky Claitt. I think Starks may be it, but he needs the minutes. I wish he would have made his layup just for the confidence that comes with making a shot when the game is on the line, but unlike every other Beaver he calmly nailed his three free throws. No point of giving Wallace significant minutes any more. He is not hitting his shots and is slow to rotate on defense.
Haynes should go to the bench every time he makes a stupid play like the impossible angle pass under the basket with the game on the line. Coach Rob keeps saying the team is more athletic, but when Omari, Haynes and Wallace are getting the minutes, how is that much different from last year?
Why doesn’t Robinson call a timeout when Haynes gets trapped under the basket?
Haynes had a guy beyond three on the wing wide open, too. His awareness is poor. He should be a bench player who gets maybe 8 minutes per night.
It will be interesting to see if Roberto Nelson changes the dynamics of this team and Haynes playing time. I mean from what I have seen the last two games, they are playing like it is the Jay John era again. What happened to the Princeton offense? There is a slight uptick in athleticism with Cunningham, but that is all I am seeing right now.
Coach Rob has the guys ready to the point where we have not been behind at the half yet this year. But it’s pretty apparent that Wallace and Johnson need to be role players in the second half. Calvin will come around as he shares time with Nelson, but Wallace killed us in this game. His defensive rotation wasn’t just slow. He was spacing so poorly that he could be beat by a five foot pass in the zone. It was ridiculous.
I think Coach Rob is just about fed up with the seniors’ play. Loyalty is fine for a couple games, but we can’t take the losses for this loyalty. We could have lost these games while breaking in the youngsters… same difference. We may see that still. Wallace rotated out for Collier’s defense a couple times in the second half. Collier is a much better athlete, and it showed immediately.
Where’s Brandt? Six minutes?
Our frontcourt for the second half should be Collier, Brandt and Burton with some Omari thrown in. And the guard rotation should be what it is now with Nelson replacing Wallace and Starks getting 30+ every game.
I just can’t get the image of Wallace launching 27 footers for fun… then getting lost on the defensive end, leaving his assignment wide open for an easy trey. It was just lazy play.
Yeah, Brandt could not get into any flow and I am not sure why Collier is not getting more minutes unless he has been slow to pick up things in practice. He has a smooth stroke at the foul line also if his two attempts are any indication of the future.
It is also time to phase out McShanes minutes. I know he hustles, but lets be honest, he is not a D-1 talent and it not going replace Shaft at the top on the Princeton. His four turnovers in 11 minutes did not help things.
Wallace has been on the bench before, so I am little puzzled as to why Coach Rob is putting up with his play. Even more then his godawful three point shooting (his shots are not even close), like you say the defense is atrocious. I hope some kind of rotation falls into line when Nelson starts playing.
McShane is fine for about five to seven minutes per game. And about five of those minutes should be in the first half. Yes, TO’s are bad. Missing bad shots is equal in my eyes.
With Wallace rotating out due to his lack of defense, he only played 27 minutes. That number should drop quite a bit when tape of this game is reviewed. I would assume that review is needed because he wasn’t yanked the first time he tried a poor shot. I would give him 15 in the first half, but he gets the pine for the second stanza.
Omari is an enigma. He seems to be doing the right thing some of the time, but he is just a half step slow in the second half. I’d be willing to let him continue so long as he continues to work on his second half offense. His defense keeps him in for now.
Johnson has been much improved, but I have a feeling we’ll see his production decline significantly in conference play. If I were Robinson, I’d bail on these upperclassmen, go all youth, take lumps, and make next year the season you take a run at an NIT or greater.
They need a calming force on the floor. Everyone looks unsure. Cunningham has the look of constant panic on his face. Same with Johnson. Most of them play out of control, too.
Nelson is a cool cat who can just hit shots and take pressure off everyone. Starks has that look to him as well. They need guys like that.
There are so many problems with this team; I should probably make a post to discuss all of them. Even things like awareness are poor. How does nobody on the court call a timeout when Haynes gets trapped under the hoop with a few seconds left? I have a hard time accepting that.
Do you notice when Starks hit that fade away in the lane to stop the bleeding, it looked like he was saying something to the bench?…his body language was like…this is how it is done idiots let me have this team! I think the question about recruiting vs. coaching with Coach Rob is interesting, but needs more time to play out. You can tell he spent time in the corporate world with his…this is improvement because we are getting ahead in games…spin. Nice salesmanship!
Mike Parker made a comment about Omari looking tired in the second half. It is a more uptempo style so far. Sounds like conditioning is in play.
We’ll see on Wednesday which direction we go. I think it’s fine to start the seniors because they seem to practice well and play out the first half with decent play. I don’t mind the mad scientist method of substitution to figure out who is ready to play the second half either.
But the weird and constant rotations in the second half need to stop. Why did Rhys Murphy rotate in during a crucial time in the second half? He looked SOOOO rusty. The time for him to get game feel is in the first half… before the other team has time to make adjustments.
I really think the difference between the last two games and the first is that Ahmad and Angus were on the floor for most of the second half in the first game. Haynes and Johnson have been hit and miss during that time, and Wallace has been worse than ineffectual.
Collier needs to work into the rotation along with Brandt and Starks. He’s going to be a dandy.
With two losses in the non-con, we can kiss a decent league record good-bye unless we turn over the rotation now. We might take a couple lumps, but I’d be willing to bet we take more with the current rotation.
And we play .500 ball at best while relying on the seniors. The youth needs to take over now.
