Brandin Cooks & Recruiting

138

As you all know, the Beavers landed (rivals.com) 4-star recruit Brandin Cooks. Poached him from UCLA, to be more exact. Scout lists Cooks as a 3-star athlete, and based on the film I saw I tend to agree. He looks more like Kevan Walker than Markus Wheaton (who I thought should have been 4-star). He's a bit faster than Walker, though. I saw a 10.7/100m listed, which translates to a 4.28/40m. But I don't see that kind of speed on film. He looks like a 4.45 guy. Scout lists his 40 at 4.40, but scouting services rely on players, coaches, and unreliable timing methods so you just never know.

What I do know is he has a good head on his shoulders, thought the process through, and picked the best fit for him. He doesn't sound enamored with Corvallis, the town, but he does love the program and staff. He seems determined to make the NFL, and the Beavers need that work ethic and mojo. Also keep in mind Cooks and McClure are buddies, and he's also chummy with the Grant foursome. If dominoes begin to fall the Beavers could wind up with a real coup de tat.

As to where he will play, he does look more natural on offense, but the Beavers have more of a need at CB. My hunch is that Cooks is a Doe replacement right now, and ultimately projected to be a James Rodgers replacement. That's fine.

Overall, I'm excited about Cooks' commitment, but I think fans expecting him to come in next year and be DeSean Jackson will be disappointed. Think a combo of Kevan Walker and Markus Wheaton. On this prospect I think scout.com has the more accurate projection.

Here are his highlights, decide for yourself:

    • He looks like a stud receiver to me. I think we are set for a while with the tandum of Cooks(Quon), Zimmerman(Stroughter) and Mullaney(way better Morales). We need 1 or 2 Oline men and like you said, McClure Peat Grant 4 sum and we are set.

By the way I really like the 2 we took from UCLA. There recruiting has really taken a hit this year, I wonder what Owa would have done had he been a senior this year? Just curious

  1. A 10.7 is quite impressive. You can’t really translate a 100 m time to a 40 yard time though. Some guys are better at one than the other. A good 100m time will be good for those 50 yard bombs. With good training he should be able to improve his burst.

  2. Watching Cooks’ video, he looks to have very good speed, excellent hands, and a high football IQ. I agree with Angry — his best position is probably receiver (offense) not CB (defense).

I also agree that the Beavers have a greater need for studs on the offensive and defensive lines. But getting a guy like Cooks is still a good thing (especially if he can help OSU land other high-quality guys)…

  3. Another thing I thought of… is I think in the past when we have landed highly sought after guys it has been late in the game. It might help landing this guy earlier in the game with landing more quality players.

  4. I just had a crazy thought…Could it be that the beavs through the game last Saturday against Stanford to get another team in the top 5 especially since it’s a pac-10 team? If we come out flat this Saturday for a Rivalry game, with College Gameday there, and everyone watching…..we would be hurting ourselves more than helping ourselves…could it be that Bobby-D is telling Riley in secret to not win these games so we can earn more revenue for the pac-10 with a pac-10 team (even if it is our rivals) to play for an NC and allow Stanford to play in a BCS game?! Is it possible?!!??

  5. Idk Silver, I’ve seen some pretty crazy things….the only pac-10 losses we’ve had were those in our division for next year except UCLA. Looking ahead to next year, we’ve lost to UW, WSU, (UofO)*, and Stanford. The only team in our division we beat was CAL. 1-5 in our division next year at this rate is not a good record at all! maybe we should be happy for the round robin…people say it hurts us, well this year it helped us. We would do better in the southern division than the Northern Division.

  6. If the Rodgers brothers don’t come back next year I may not renew my season tickets even though I was very excited about starting Pac-12 play and the Beavs hosting a CCG game some year in the next 5 hopefully.

If they go, maybe Decarolis and Riley have run their course. Altleast Langsdorf and Banker will have. Seriously, we need atleast one new coordinator and two would be even better. Maybe Jay Locey could be interim offensive coordinator. DeCarolis is too slow to reach out to Mike Leach for O.C.

    • Both of them will be back. There’s no reason for them to leave they won’t be high draft picks and the NFL most likely will be having a lockout. There’s no point in them leaving when they have eligibility left and they know that.

      • I could see Quizz going in the 3rd or 4th round. James is not going to get drafted so i makes sense for him to leave. On the one hand you might say it doesn’t make sense to leave for 3rd or 4th round money but he is a known quantity, a breakout year isn’t going to raise his stock. That is why I say he should go and it makes sense he should go because he risks significant injury like his brother. I think he likes college life though and think he feels he has unfinished business. If I were his friend and he asked what I thought I would say take the money and run.

A lockout could throw a wrench in things but this is not the NBA. The NFL is making money and the players and owners share the profits pretty evenly. I doubt the season is even shortened. The NFL is the biggest league in America and it will be for a while.

        • If I were a friend of Quizz, I’d strongly advise him to come back for his senior year, for a chance to:

          1) play one last year with his brother James
          2) move way up the career records lists at OSU and in the PAC-10/12
          3) leave a greatly enhanced legacy at OSU (a legacy that would be badly tarnished if Quizz left after this down year)
          4) improve at least somewhat his NFL draft stock and signing bonus (no guarantee of this, but a good 2011 season might move him up a round at least…)
          5) win the Heisman next year (probably only a small chance of that….but still a chance)
          6) graduate from college — with his brother James — before going to the NFL
          7) enjoy his last year of college before turning pro (given that his pro career may end up being short — one never knows…)
          8) be part of a highly successful Beaver team in his last season (again, assuming that OSU does much better in 2011, which I believe is likely, though of course far from guaranteed).
          9) become a better player before trying his luck in the NFL (yes, even Quizz has room for improvement)

In contrast, the major reasons to leave OSU after this season would be quicker/earlier NFL money, and also avoiding the risk of injury next year at OSU. Those are valid concerns. But I think they are significantly outweighed by the considerations listed above.

  7. Just as off-topic as stalking twits…

If Wazzu wins (and we, of course, lose) then the Pac 10 has only three bowl-eligible teams.

I say screw the bowl system anyway. When the SEC and Big Twelven get their fourth, fifth and sixth place teams tied into bowls with payouts higher than our second place tie-in, something is just wrong.

On top of that, they all play only eight conference games and save their best for Coastal Beauty College of Peru in Indiana the week before their rivalry games.

We get a better payout when we put a second team in the BCS (and that’s it) than we would if we filled all our tie-ins and had only one BCS team.

    We love you tom Hansen!

  8. Is it just me or is it sad that we all seem to get super excited when we finally see a kid with 4 stars next to his name commit to OSU?

Shit like this should be the norm and not a “special treat” that rarely occurs…

    • He does have an offer from LSU at least…. that’s at least a positive if he is indeed going to be a Beaver.

If Kurz commits and with Cooks, how many scholarships are left?

Hopefully OSU has enough to give McClure, Moreland, 4 Grant Kids, Byron Moore, Victor Blackwell, Michael Thomas, and Rahmel Dockery….

  9. So far, Rivals does not rank OSU in the top 50 for recruiting for all conferences (several PAC 10 teams are) and OSU is ranked 9th in the PAC 10 (ASU is 10th). They show us with 19 commitments so far.

    Just sayin’

    • I get pissed when I see statements like this: “…and the underwhelming performance of his brother Jacquizz have …”

The only reason his performance was ‘underwhelming’ is because he had a piss poor OL in front of him and the OC did a piss poor job with his play calling. IF he’d had a good OL and OC we’d be talking about him winning the Heisman.

      • I know the stats don’t back this up, but I think Quizz was best as a freshman and has gotten a little bit worse each year. He’s still very good, but you’d think he’d improve each year. Also, I feel he didn’t fight as hard for yards this year. Granted, he is probably fed up with the line and team effort. Still, that’s what I saw this year and over his career.

        • I can only imagine this but that said…. If it were me and I thought the play calling sucked and the quality of the OL sucked and there was a lack of fire and emotion on the team I’d have a problem with keeping myself fired up. In fact I’m impressed with how hard he tries even now.

  10. The whole team needs to step up. There was not a group focus on keeping drives going again. I blame Langsdorf quite a bit with some poor playcalling but the players just were nowhere into the Stanford game enough. You have to get jackep up about every game and the opportuntity it presents. We all love Quizz but katz needs to have a higher completion percentage and there has to be total focus for as close to a full 60 minutes as possible. Defense also needs to just give it everything and hold on 3rd downs. In football the little things add up. But if you give it everything you can usually force more things to turn your way and control momentum longer. The players and coaches have to dig deep this week and if they get into BEZERKER mode they can hang with even the Ducks.

  11. I agree with MW2 in that we (fans) get all excited in pulling in a 3 or 4 star… and I agree it should be the norm.

Question: If we happen to break from our poor recruiting and get good starred players on the field next year (that is they actually get to play), will we then be successful or has our predictable offense and defense brought us to a point that we lose whomever we play?

I know the answer here is multi-faceted but here would be my order of importance:

    1) Good starred players allowed to play / recruiting
    2) Banker has light bulb come on or leaves
    3) Langsdorf has light bulb come on or leaves
    4) If these don’t work Riley leaves
    5) Become a duck fan…. nah, I’d rather shoot myself in the head (that would make me a duck fan).

    • “…If we happen to break from our poor recruiting and get good starred players on the field next year (that is they actually get to play), will we then be successful…”

      I’d say no because:

      1) it seems to take kids a while to adapt to college football and to OSU’s system.

      2) the poor performance of the OC and DC.

      3) the lack of grit the team has displayed which as has been said before comes from the head guy.

      4) the inability of the coaching staff to make adjustments during a game.

      5) etc. etc.

  12. I need some help understanding the whole big/little brother thing.

Our younger sister to the south seems to have had a sex change, and the required testosterone supplements and steroid treatments have made her… er… him one big ugly man… apparently with a closet full of some of the worst drag outfits imaginable.

What I don’t understand is the thought that we as the big brother have some decided advantage over our younger sister… er… brother just because of age and wisdom. Sometimes the younger sibling grows up to be one big ugly who can’t be stopped.

Why does that big ugly have to also want to pretend to be us in the big/little brother dynamic?

    • “…Our younger sister to the south seems to have had a sex change, and the required testosterone supplements and steroid treatments have made her… er… him one big ugly man… apparently with a closet full of some of the worst drag outfits imaginable….”

      LOL

I’m known for stating the obvious so here goes.

It wasn’t a sex change that did it, it was an infusion of a TON OF MONEY. It’s all about bling baby.

Unless OSU has coaches that can recruit and coach like crazy then there’s no way in hell we’ll be able to keep up with the ‘ucks.

Currently OSU can’t afford to hire and or keep coaches who can recruit and coach like crazy so I’m figuring I’m going to be rooting for a doormat for the rest of my life. Even though common sense and my wife keep telling me that I should get away from sports all together, I can’t help but root for the Beavs. I was born a Beav and I’ll die a Beav.

      • Well, we’re not talking about a cheap surgery. Sugar daddy had to pay for it.

It doesn’t change the fact that they need to take pills to replace their lack of testes… or that they’re the younger sibling in this scenario always.

What I’m trying to understand is why the younger sibling has to pretend to be the older sibling. And I’m talking in a sociological sense. Many times the younger sibling becomes the bigger success as an adult.

But we seem to be dealing with a younger sibling with an identity crisis whilst trying to understand her… his sudden popularity.

It’s almost like UO has Disney Channel Star Syndrome. They’re doing their song and dance as proscribed by their handlers, and they are wildly successful as long as they’re the fresh face on the scene. But they’re only two steps away from beinturning into the strung out wastes these types always end up being.

At least Daddy Phil bought them a new house.

Funny thing…. There was a semi-stink (as there always is in Eugene) about the creation and construction of the Jaqua Center. People wanted to know the usuals. Why were athletes being treated betterthan students. Why were athletics getting money while academics suffered.

The usual response was that Daddy Phil (or whomever) could spend his money how he wanted, and look how much he has done for academics.

Of course, he’s really done nothing for academics except throw them a bone. But that’s a different topic.

The neat thing is that both sides never asked the athletes what they wanted for an academic/learning/studying facility. It turns out the Jaqua Center wasn’t it. If you drive by the center at night, you can see all the rooms lit up with the blinds open. And there’s nobody inside.

It turns out the athletes wanted to be a part of the student body as a whole, and they spend the majority of time doing what the rest of us did during our school days. They go to the library to study.

        • We just need to come up with a plan. Here is the basic premise:
1.) we get Beaver fans to enroll at UofO.
2.) they then team up with the local anarchist to protest Nike and their abuse of cheap labor.
3.) PK stops funding UofO athletics.

          It is ingenious.

        • When are you going to pretend not to have penis envy?

The 1994 Ducks Rose Bowl run was done without Phil Knight’s assistance. So was the 1996 Cotton Bowl run. Granted, we lost both games, but they were indicative of far better seasons on the whole than mere Sun Bowls can attest to.

In short, we did some serious winning without a gazillion dollars. That winning drew Phil Knight’s interest.

Again, what’s your perpetual excuse for not even managing what we did without Knight?

As far as big brother/little brother, that requires context. Yours was the first public college, it wasn’t even a university until 1927 whereas the UO has been one since its inception. Regardless, both schools started their football programs in 1893 and we all know, or should know, which one has been the more successful of the two.

          • So you’re saying that all this success is Oregon State’s fault? If an OSU alum wouldn’t have built a football stadium for our little sister then they wouldn’t have had a team worth coaching for a later OSU alum. If that OSU alum hadn’t caught the fancy of Daddy Phil, little sister wouldn’t have changed into little brother on steroids and wearing fairy wings.

That’s not a penis down there though. That’s all dick and no balls.

Are we envious of little hybrid gender for getting to play for the BCS championship? Every team not doing so is.

Are we envious of all the trappings the university thinks are gaining them the ability to play for said BCS championship? Not really. They’re more garish than they are useful.

In fact, I have a hard time accepting that OSU deals with Nike at all given their known (not to mention suspected) labor practices. I’d rather play in the house that potato salad built than the house that lots of part time 12-year old sex slaves built. I’d rather play in the house that bad burritos built than the house that totalitarian Commie profit-sharing built.

I think you get the idea. It’s not hard to be idealistic about this one, and we should make a move to do so.

          • What I am saying is that your lack of success is your own fault. That the Ducks are somehow your collective oppressors or that no one but Phil Knight put in any cash or effort into building the program is what is endlessly funny about the relationship between the two fan bases.

            Thomas J. Autzen= a Beaver with a Ducks son, Thomas E. Autzen.

Rich Brooks= a Beaver not hired by OSU.

In 1950, Autzen started the charitable foundation that finally built the namesake stadium in 1967. That was a lot of foresight and a lot of donations to the foundation from varied sources over a long stretch of time. OSU could have planned something comparable but never did. Excuses are always easier to make than are cash donations.

OSU could have had the foresight to hire away Rich Brooks after the Fertig disaster and before the Avezzano calamity, but didn’t.

So do go on with your fine tradition of warmly accepting mediocrity, complete with a miserable world view, snug and smug in the blanket moral superiority that the rise of your potato salad benefactor was only made possible through the indirect, but still wholly illegal, exploitation of Latin American farm laborers.

It is well nigh impossible to make any more fun of your fans–at your collective expense–than you already do caricaturing yourselves on the internet and IRL.

            You redefine pettiness every day.

          • Of course lack of success is our own fault. Try finding a post on this blog that says anything negative about the Ducks. The reason the site exists is because I (and the people who post here) know the lack of success is the Beavers fault. It’s why we have hundreds of posts and comments pointing fingers where they’re deserved.

Any jab at Phil Knight or money is out of hatred, which is nothing more than jealousy. I try to never do this, and I respect and admire what the Ducks have done. I think most people here feel that way, but if you do find someone (myself included) lashing out they’re either drunk, enraged, jealous, or some combination of all, which are totally understandable emotions, especially given how this season has gone and the fact that we are not as good as Oregon. It is not exactly easy to deal with.

          • I was saying the same things when we were better than and beating UO, so envy is not what fuels my dislike for the Ducks. And my dislike for them doesn’t rise to the level of hatred either. That would be a waste of my energy. It’s simply a rivalry.

That rivalry is fed by the evidence of simple human rights violations by one side. But that only fuels the fire. When Reser Fine Foods issues a Captain Renault statement apologizing for not knowing about the treatment (that is the stuff of serial killer movies in the US) of their children and women employees in notoriously totalitarian states, then I will agree with your contention that what they do is “wholly illegal”.

That Reser’s is not on the same list as Union Carbide/Dow Chemical (anything Agent Orange or Bhopal), Shell and Chevron (Nigeria and Burma), Texaco (Ecuador), Monsanto (India), DynCorp (Colombia and Bosnia) and Nestle (Ivory Coast)… is a testament to the non-issues you raise against them. That they refuse to sta

          • That they don’t go into these situations and stand on the shoulders of these evil giants then issue empty procalamation after empty apology time and again should drive it home.

I absolutely hate that we are associated with Nike in any way. I’m resigned to the fact that we are for the time being, and I would make the most of it as a business decision. But I REALLY want the first decision to be that we find another apparel contract.

Through all that, I can still separate the UO from Nike. It’s just getting harder every year with every decision the school makes.

Like angry and I said, we envy the Ducks’ success. And anyone not named Auburn would say the same. But the model from here forward is to buy success with ill-gotten gains. The well is poisoned, and we don’t want to drink. But not drinking means dying of thirst.

          • Blah, blah, blah. That there is not a class of professional “activists” raising money from anti-capitalist pinheads–when they are not shaking down the very same corporations they purport to combat–going hammer and tong with Reser Fine Foods just underscores that company’s lack of a high profile.

A clique of overeducated twits, who’ve never worked a hard day in their lives, compiling sensationalistic lists for immediate press release in no way makes the exploitation or benefitting from illegal farm labor any more noble than profiting from the efforts of off shore workers who are employed by local subcontractors.

The entire issue boils down to who you’d like to wear your blinders for. Congrats on choosing factory processed refrigerated foodstuffs.

Oh, and congratulations are also in order regarding OSU’s ongoing Tier One dance with the devil known as Nike.

          • You come bearing the gift of an assumption that our benefactor breaks the law to pay undeserving individuals a somewhat fair wage in comparably excellent working conditions. I come with your benefactor’s ‘shocked’ apologies for known human rights abuses in totalitarian states where the conditions were preset and a known quantity… and empty promises for change which can in no way be upheld given those preset circumstances.

I agree with Cesar Chavez about the economic and resulting human rights issues concerning the practice of hiring illegals in the US. And that is a problem that needs to be addressed. And I agree that most (if not all) farmers (read: local sub-contractors) are complicit in this practice because of the same poisoned well of unbalanced and tainted competition.

But paying illegals under the table is hardly comparable to human trafficking and slave/child labor. The world is not black and white. I’m not going to point my gun at the kitten playing with a ball of yarn when there’s a lion charging me.

          • I’d like to take a moment and thank you for running this blog because Beaver Nation sorely needs the measured and critical perspective it provides.

I lived the old Ducks’ inferiority complex regarding Washington, which is almost completely exorcised these days. We collectively bitched about them less and less beginning in the late 80s, benchmarked them, rolled up our sleeves and started building a program to compete with them.

It feels indescribably good these days to be able to look their fans in the eye, or even look down upon them when they get snippy, and laugh, rather than spew the old timey religion of bitter invective about how they hold all of the cards and how life is so unfair.

Angry, I sincerely believe you are a fan who’d like to instill a collective “Let’s do this!” attitude within your fan base. Best of luck to you in your efforts because that quest commands my respect.

My fear for you is that there is far too many “bitter beavs,” who hate the Ducks more than they love their own team, and the complacent “happy not to be losing as much” fans who will both continue to be the albatross around the program’s neck.

          • And without PK you would still be competing for the odd Cotton/Sun/Holiday Bowls much like we are now without a PK bankrolling us. Your 94 Rose Bowl would be akin to our 2000 Fiesta Bowl, a once-in-a-15-to-20-year thing. If after our 2000 season, I wonder where OSU would be now if a PK had stepped up and asked, “What do you need?”

Of course we’re envious. Who wouldn’t want an owner like Phil Knight?

  13. All of these WR recruits, to me, don’t mean shit.

It’s nice we got Cooks, I guess, but what good does that do us with this pathetic offensive line that we have? I’m surprised Katz isn’t in a coma right now with the way he’s been smacked time and time again.

Not only are these guys on the line talentless, they are gutless and they need to be replaced.

It’s not all bleak in Beaverland though. We did recruit a bunch of DE’s. I really wish Banker would consider changing us to the 3-4…since we’ll be dreadfully short on DT’s next season.

Either that or we shift any guy with enough weight 250 or more to that position and put them through the toughest defensive boot camp ever imagined- which, coming from Banker, will suck. The loss of Paea should be a wake up call to Riley and co….and they need to offer any player with the heart to do it a chance to start or play- with Kevin Frahm and Castro being the guys they compete with.

I just wish we could recruit a few more talented guys that weigh about 270 or more that can play either/both sides of the ball.

  14. I’ll say one thing about the Furd loss. Anthony Watkins needs to be playing a lot more ball.

But we’ve had this whole discussion. There are guys who get it and know how to play football. And there are seniors who have ‘earned’ playing time.

Watkins was a lot like Poyer in HS… with a little better speed and size. Watching him just make a bee-line for the RB by cutting through Furd linemen and just tackling the guy was about as impressive a play as I’ve seen from an OSU defender all year. And he did it twice… getting rave reviews from the color guy both times.

It was funny, because it looked both times like everyone was standing still on the field, they were all so slow. I could see Watkins running in from out of the picture, and I thought, “I can see where he’s going, but he’ll never get there.”

Then he seems to speed up and just run between two of several pulling blockers… and the play was over just like that.

      • Watkins was the same as Poyer in that he was a QB/DB with decent size and a lot of speed for a small school here in the NW. That got him zero evaluation from the recruiting ‘services’, but he was spotted in an OSU diamond mine.

Until this year, I thought he was just another kid lost on the sideline due to our mine being mined out. Now I know it’s because he can play football, and that would give the seniors a complex.

This is a kid who was recruited in the 2007 Class, but gray shirted to be in the 2008 Class with his brother.

Those two plays alone made him look like OSU defenders of four years ago. He also looked pretty good as a pass defender against Luck when really nobody else looked close to getting it done against him.

  15. How good of friends are Brandin Cooks and Stefan McClure?

I hope they are BFF’s … Bringing McClure to OSU with him would be brilliant.

Perhaps Cooks is the reason Riley finally decided to cut Lampkins loose….?

  16. I found an updated highlight reel of Cooks. He’s improved a lot from 2009, and I can see why he’s 4-stars. The one odd thing on his film: they show him fumble a kickoff.

        • If we land Dockery and hold on to Zimmerman and Cooks… those guys to go along with a Jeff Maehl-looking Richard Mullaney, a returning James Rodgers, a stud in Markus Wheaton, the explosive and circus freak Jordan Bishop, the high-jumping giant Obum Gwachem, and a potential for Victor Blackwell and/or Michael Thomas…. dare I say, could we possibly have the best depth at WR in all of Division-I?

Now we need the same depth on our ‘O’ and ‘D’ lines.

          • This recruiting class is starting to please me a little bit. Earlier in the year, it was looking very grim (Yay! Kellen Clute!). Now, with these recent/almost verbals, and if they can pull in their friends with them (*cough* McClure *cough*), this might be a respectable class. OSU will have gained some speed with some of these skill players. Recruits from earlier in the year (Woods) are turning out to be huge gets, based upon their Senior production.

The only thing that would make this class really good is more highly rated tackles (Moala, Todd Peat anyone?).

          • I agree… Cliff Harris doesn’t really impress me at all. He puts his team at stake whenever he tries to be flashy doing fancy crap on botched kick returns whilst fumbling the ball.

          • He does do a lot of good things to. I just think if we had landed Harris that Riley would not be playing him. He prefers guys that will conform to the system of guys that take risks. Cliff has some brilliant plays but just as many head scratches. The knowledgeable Duck fans do gush over him.

          • Yeah, their fans see him return punts for TDs against the likes of Washington State, New Mexico, and Portland State and they think he’s greater than sliced bread.

I’m surprised Harris is even academically eligible to play still… didn’t he go to Oregon because his grades sucked to bad to get into other schools?

          • Cliff Harris impresses me. He rarely gets burned. You guys are exaggerating it because he called OSU “little brother”…he’s pretty great at both returns and CB. He has 5 interceptions, and every time I turn on a Duck game he’s returning a punt for a TD. I can think of only one time he’s been burned badly, and it was in the last game.

          • IDK, I’ve seen plenty of plays where the guy he’s covering just drops the ball without Harris making a difference.

He plays selfishly, taking unnecessary risks that put the defense in jeopardy. He might be a good athlete, but he doesn’t impress me too much personally.

          • Angry I’ve seen every Duck game this year and I can tell you he gets burned A LOT. Once a game he looks like a guy who shouldn’t see the field. He doesn’t start for the Ducks and they don’t have great cover guys to begin with. The coaching staff doesn’t even think he’s starter material that says all that needs to be said about him as a player. Perfect example of how he gets burned that Juron Criner TD on Friday night my god, Brandin Hardin would have done a much better job.

          • I’ve seen almost every Duck game, and I don’t see what you see. I see a guy who is aggressive and usually makes plays. On the team I root for, I see guys who aren’t aggressive getting burned more than Cliff Harris.

I guess we’ll see on Saturday.

    • The prospect of Rahmel Dockery makes me VERY excited. This kid has awesome speed and is very versatile.

He can play stints at RB, WR, DB, PR, and KR…. All around great, great athlete.

His floor is Markus Wheaton and his ceiling is DeSean Jackson+.

    • Unless we replace him with someone better. We do have Agnew in this class, and he is rated higher. Woods also said depth chart is a huge issue for him. It’s probably that more than the bowls tbh.

      • Even though Agnew may be rated higher than Woods, just by looking at the film, I think you and I both know who’s the better RB.

Hopefully Terron Ward can turn into something…. at least we still have Jovan Stevenson for 3 more years!!! haha!

  17. With all the talk about Poyer and Watkins, I wonder if Anderson will live up to his hype. I know he is athletic and probably plays hard. I am hoping Ward is the 2nd coming of Quizz!! Though it would be nice to have a #34 type back of the old days.

I feel positive about this game, I dont know why but I do. Anyone else share this sentiment?

    • Seems like the Beavs have one in McCants, but he cannot get on the field when there are not enough plays to go around. Would have been nice to see him get 5 to 10 carries a game in a perfect world. I think he has a lot of talent.

    • What hype? Anderson walked-on, and was a zero star recruit. That being said, he’s one of the better looking walk-ons in some time and could have an impact at some point.

  18. “How many more scholarhips does Riley use on WRs this year?”

I couldn’t agree more. Seems like OSU lavishes scholarships on WR’s and RBs, and then relies on walk-ons for the O-line and D-line.

I know Cav is a great coach, and can transform scrap metal into gold, but c’mon — give him something decent to work with, for a change. I’d much rather see us recruiting more studs for the O-line and D-line rather than stockpiling more WR’s at this point….

  19. Uo dropped in the rankings to #2. Anyone think the ‘ucks are going to come out fired up thinking they’ve something to prove (like they deserve to be #1)?

This is for all you ‘uck lurkers, FTd.

  20. I hate the fucking ducks. I hate their fans, I hate their stadium. I don’t even like the color green anymore. I am so sick of the arrogant bullshit spewing from every bandwagon duck fan in the nation.

The ducks are good this year. No, the duck are great this year. They are way further ahead of the Beavers than the 5-5 CW record over the last 10 years would indicate. But enough is enough. I know it’s just a fantasy, and I know we have a serious beat-down coming our way…but how sweet would it be if some how, some way we could knock them off? It would be the upset of the year…but what if?

    I hate the fucking ducks.

    • I know how you feel but I have it worse. My brother goes to Oregon so I have to hear all that arrogant crap every day! But I personally think OSU has a shot to win it. First of all Oregon is nowhere near great on the road. They often come out sluggish and play bad in the first half so the Beavers need to come out with fire and passion and get up on them early. I say kick the ball off to start the game and get a stop and see if they can get a 10 point lead at the break. Start of the 2nd half take the ball and milk that clock as much as possible talking like a 8 minute drive and put it in for 6. Then Oregon will get hot offensively just gotta keep the ball for a long time for the purpose of milking the clock. All the Beavers would have to do then is trade TD and drain the clock while at it. Quizz should get a heavy dose and I would like to see Ryan McCants get the ball a bunch in the 2nd half. That way he can wear down that Duck defense and show some power for once.

This is the kind of game the Beavers need to pull out the bag of tricks. Oregon is a team that defensively likes to fly around and use it’s speed so the Beavers need to use that against them. A lot of sweeps and reverses and double reverses and even a reverse pass. The Beavers can’t hold anything back. I have a feeling if the Beavers have successful trick plays and the Beavers make plays defensively, Oregon will get rattled. Riley has a tendency to get conservative with a lead in the 2nd half that can’t happen. If the Beavers are leading Riley needs to pull out all the stops and have this team step on their throats don’t let up for one second.

Best way to stop Oregon as I’ve seen is to send the heat up the middle. You blitz up the middle on Thomas and he panics a lot. You can get his head so when you’re not blitzing you can tell he’s still panicking and expecting to be pounded and makes bad decisions. They key is always to stop LaMichael James but if you can lay a lot of hits on Thomas then you have a great shot at winning the game cause h

      • he will give you some turnovers. Hopefully the Beavers come out and don’t hold anything back and play with fire, heart and as much intensity as they can muster. Beating the Ducks would be the best, especially cause they won’t be going to a national title game. How many Duck fans would find the nearest bridge…..

  21. Let’s try this again.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. But the Pac 10 would be better off if the Beavs won on Saturday.

Because of the Rose bowl rules for taking the highest non-BCS at-large if eligible, Furd is already in a BCS game other than the usual Pac 10 tie-in. So if UO has to settle for the Rose Bowl, they’re not pushing a Pac 10 team out of that slot.

I’ve already pointed out that if Wazzu wins the Apple Cup and we lose that the Pac 10 will have two BCS teams and one team in the Alamo Bowl… and that’s it. If we win, we would technically take third in the conference, but I don’t know if the Alamo Bowl chooses us over Arizona. And the Holiday Bowl has already said they would choose us as low as fifth in the conference.

Bottom line, the conference wins money-wise if the Beavs and UW win on Saturday. It’s a gain of only $2m or so, but it’s a gain.

And who wouldn’t want to see the Ducks get run over by a Wisconsin team that’s on a roll?

    • Well explained, but right now I have a wistful smile on my face because it all seems like just a sweet unrealistic dream. Not that I want to lose Storm Woods, but I think it would also fit in well with the Utes. Asiata and Wide graduate. Whittingham always uses more than one back.

  22. Losing Storm Woods would suck. But there are other RB’s available if he makes the decision to back up Jarrell Oliver for his whole career.

I have always liked Courney Williams in Davis, CA.

And I also like Garrett Steele down there in Kingsburg.

Note on Steele… he was the starting RB until halfway through the first game this season. Then the starting QB broke his wrist, and Steele had to take over. They run a read option, so he is really tearing it up at QB. But I think he would have been better at RB.

    • Normally I would agree with you on line prospects, but this kid looks like he has some real fire to his game. If he’s 255, then the camera must add twenty pounds in his case though.

He plays contain nicely, and he has really strong hands. I usually like videos where the linemen are singled out before the play, but you could tell which one he was before each play because he was twitching non-stop.

If this is Auwae De Rego, then he has a tragic personal story. He lost a little brother in a fishing accident five years ago, and he lost another younger brother this past summer in a vehicle accident.

He was a really good hoopster, winning several state championships as I recall. And I think his third sport was/is judo.
