In-game Comments: Utah Valley @ Oregon State

Sorry guys, just got home from a long day.

Here is the scouting report on Utah Valley:

Utah Valley comes to Corvallis on a two-game winning streak with blowout wins over La Sierra, 93-46, and Northern New Mexico, 87-37, after opening the season with losses to Maine, Florida International and Georgia State. The Wolverines finished 12-18 last season and 5-7 in the Great West Conference. Head coach Dick Hunsaker is in his ninth year at Utah Valley after stops at Utah, Ball State, Manchester College and Weber State. Arguably, the biggest win of his career came in 1990 when he was the head coach at Ball State and upset Oregon State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This year's team is led by juniors Isiah Williams (11.6 points) and Geddes Robinson (11.4 points, 7.8 rebounds) and senior Jordan Swarbrick (10.8 points, 3.0 assists).

  1. Utah coach is complaining about the disparity in fouls.

Even though I have channelsurfing on I’ve only been listening because I have Quicken over the top of channelsurfing. Does the coach have a valid complaint.

  2. Another sloppy effort so far. Hunsaker is a good coach, a lot of people thought he should have replaced Majerus at Utah, but he got shoved aside.

    • Ahmad is clearly their best FT shooting and Calvin is normally good on both of those. To me when guys are missing free throws and layups that’s a sign they aren’t focusing which you can see from this group from time to time. I’m sure the more Craig gets on their case the better they’ll be at being focused for each game.

  3. Will they build on this run and put these guys away or will they come out flat? Starks is looking great, like his creativity with the ball.

  4. 1

I hope Dockery doesn’t give Parker any of the game plan.

I still don’t trust Parker, since he was a ‘uck way back when.

  5. Does Burton every shot a smooth shot that quietly falls through the hoop? Even when he makes them they roll and bounce around the hoop!

    • Exactly, I mean he just seems to throw the ball up there at times. If he had touch, he would average 12-16 pts a game easy. Plus does not look like he is going to improve his free throw shooting either.

    • Just dont get what he brings anymore. Why not see what Murphy can do in extended minutes. Point will probably be mute if Nelson is as advertised.

    • This team has lost decent little leads in every game except the first one I think. They just are not great shooters and now they cannot rebound tonight for some reason.

    • You’re far too negative. This team is plenty athletic that is not a problem. They can defend when they put in the effort. They aren’t a great shooting team as a of now. It’s all about focus and effort that this team is lacking which is very concerning.

      • I am just fed up with the lackadaisical play on both ends. This is Utah Valley St., they haven’t beat a D-1 team this year. There is no excuse or rationalization for this game being close.

        • At one point early in the game the Utah coach was complaining because Utah had 16 fouls and OSU had 1.

If he had a legitimate complaint it would/could be even worse than it is.

          OMG

          • It’s more than a matter of effort. The wings on the 1-3-1 never close out the trap, and thus it gets split too easily. No one knows where to be on the 2-3 zone. It’s a lack of defensive intelligence.

          • It is like they think they are a fast break team now and they do not have to give complete effort of defense. I think it is time to get the Princeton back and slow the game down. This is obviously not working.

  6. I’m now hoping that the coach is letting the upper classmen dig their own graves so when he sets them on the bench they have nothing to complain about.

    That’s what I’m hoping.

        • Perhaps one of the pointers (although I haven’t listened to one of the women’s bb games yet) would be to not hysterically scream and yell from the sidelines. I’m keener about coaches who mostly observe and then direct.

I listened to last night’s game on the radio and thought it would be difficult to play through the yelling – perhaps it’s different if you see it, but I wondered if that doesn’t cause the players to lose focus.

  7. Why do these no-name teams always have a player that can light up the Beavs? I think the 1-3-1 get some turnovers, but leaves too many open three looks. If the Beavers could shoot they would take advantage of the turnovers, now it just keeps them in games instead of losing by 10 or more. This is going to be another unbelievable loss.

    • Seriously, they make DIII teams look like Duke. You know no other team in the Pac-10 would lose this game, even if it were played 100 times.

What is going on in Corvallis? Why is the mental makeup of every team f’d up?

Utah Valley sees this game on their schedule and gets excited. “This is a Pac-10 team we can actually beat!”…OSU has to realize they’re going to come out looking to do that. They don’t realize, though. Even after six games versus this type of competition.

      • I mean in my mind they are on the verge of pissing away another non-conference schedule. Even bad Beaver teams in the past would post 8-2 type records before league play against this kind of opposition.

  8. Maybe the basketball team is going to lay an egg so OSU has it out of their system for the week. In other words the bb team puts down a stinker and the football team shines.

I think I have to get away from the keyboard.

  9. Wonder how many times they have practiced the half court heave during practice. Why did Robinson call a timeout to draw up that play?

At least try to heave it down court first.

    • My thought was Ritchie McKay! I hope these recruits dont get frustrated and bail. I remember what happened to the fab five freshmen back in the 90s.

      • Well with Ritchie McKay was he treated the players like shit and they left. But I was thinking Payne cause he would get good recruiting classes but he didn’t know how to coach them up. These are the kind of losses you expected in Craig’s first year not his 3rd.

  10. I lost the my video feed, so I had to listen on the radio. I noticed they do not even try to run the Princeton anymore. The new offense is not working and rebounding was pathetic.

  11. It takes 1 pass to break the 1-3-1.

The offense is terrible… very little motion.

Starks is reminding me of Tujuan Porter way too much… shot selection?

Coach Rob has some learning to do.

    • I am tired of hearing about all the length the Beavers have, it does not mean shit without total effort in the 1-3-1. I believe that Seth made the 1-3-1, the 1-3-1 did not make Seth.

  12. Did anyone else wonder about Coach Rob’s post game interview? He was moaning about if the team had done this, or if they’d done that (like hit more of their free throws) they would have won. And it sounded like he would have been satisfied with that.

Not once did he imply that it shouldn’t have been close.

Maybe I didn’t hear it right.

  13. 41% FG
    26% 3-pt
    58% FT
and dominated on the glass. I think we were extremely lucky to keep it close. Too bad Cunningham got in foul trouble. Him and Haynes were the only guards getting anything done. I hope Roberto is as good as advertised.

    • Cunningham played really badly. I think you mean him and Starks were the only guards playing somewhat good. Coach Rob needs to get this team playing better I don’t want yet another bad season and finishing at the bottom of the conference.

      • Yeah, I think Cunningham actually got pulled for extended minutes because of defensive lapses. I am starting to scratch my head at the X and Os of this season or lack thereof.

  14. Sad thing is that this is not even a good Utah Valley team by Coach Hunsakers standards. I lived in SLC for 13 years following college hoops there and a few years back they were much better, pounding Big Sky teams and they also beat Arizona State. They had a guy named Andy Toolson who went to some NBA camps and played in Europe.

  15. I’m not ready to sell Coach Rob down the River yet, but I have a couple thoughts on this:

1-He can’t coach. A la the Bill Callahan expiriment at Nebraska (football), he got a bunch of 4 stars and still lost. Couldn’t get them to play. Pelini turns those same guys into winners (see: N. Suh).

2-Sit the friggin Sr’s and just get the young guys in so if they are going to lose, they are going to get some experience and hopfully a chip that will allow them to exact revenge on people next year when they are matured, and gelled as a unit.
