Home Athletics Debut of Roberto Nelson

Debut of Roberto Nelson

46

At 1:30 this afternoon we'll finally get to see touted freshman Roberto Nelson. Since he'll likely be rusty, don't expect Nelson to get much playing time today. Robinson has been saying all the right things this week to take pressure off Roberto. Expect somewhere in the range of five to eight minutes and 6 points as he's worked into the lineup.

Below is the scouting report on Texas Pan Am

Texas-Pan American is 3-7 on the season with wins over Eastern Kentucky, SUNY-Cobbleskill and Victory University. The Broncs and Beavers have played one common opponent this season in Colorado. UTPA lost to the Buffaloes, 83-64, at the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo., on Nov. 30. Head coach Ryan Marks is in his second season after posting a 6-27 record in his first year, which included a win over Utah Valley in the Great West Conference Tournament. The Broncs start four guards, including senior Perry Petty and sophomores Aaron Urbanus and Brandon Provost, who are all averaging double-figures in scoring. Senior Matt Mierzycki is the team leader in rebounding and Petty leads the team in assists.

What I don't like seeing is that they play four guards. The Beavs have been atrocious in defending the corners in their 2-3 and 1-3-1 defenses. With Nelson on the floor do they shift towards man to man defense? He's not a great defender, but he is better than Haynes.

Either way, this is one of a handful of games Beaver fans can't miss. We've waited a year and a half to see what this guy can do. The good news is that we will, in fact, be able to see the game, as it is being broadcasted live on the internet.

  1. I had to look up if “broadcasted” is a word, since it sounded awkward. It looks like it recently made the jump into the dictionary. Whew.

    • That’s an okay starting lineup. Collier needs to be in there more. He has legit, upper tier, DI frame. My complaint would be Burton–he’s slow on D and misses most free throws. What exactly does Burton do well?

  2. How many more logos can OSU fit on the court?

I love the smaller “OS” logo drifting to the bottom left of the cartoon beaver at mid-court.

How about they scrape that beaver off and just put the “OS” in the center?

The A.D. and Marketing Dept. need a swift kick in the ass.

I know…I was thinking…OSU leads the nation in turnovers, but they’re so sloppy with the ball after they get one. It’s like they have a “playing with house money” mentality.

What they don’t realize is that if they don’t capitalize on the turnover, really it’s just a lot of wasted effort and that tires down the club and ultimately benefits the opponent.

If I were Robinson I’d have them slow down after each turnover…never try to play up tempo. They aren’t ready for that.

  3. I don’t understand the Beavers body language. They look so depressed.

People get all over Wallace, but he’s the one guy who looks into every game.

  4. How would you guys say he did? I wasn’t able to watch so I’m curious how he looked. I’m guessing he was real nervous because of the expectations and every kid’s first game in college they are nervous. His shot also could have been off a little bit due to his sprained thumb he had not too long ago. I won’t miss his next game I’m excited to finally see him play.

    • He didn’t play well, but it looked like first game jitters.

I’m more concerned about the offense. Do the Beavers have any play they run through the point guard? They seem so disorganized and heave up too many random shots. They need to go back to the Princeton offense and work their way up to the frenetic pace they seem to want to play at.

      • I’ve noticed that. I’m not sure what offense they’ve been running all season long. The few times they’ve ran the Princeton offense in games they’ve gotten easy baskets. I think Craig this season has made the game too difficult for the players. If they ran the Princeton offense often they could control the tempo and get guys easy baskets and give them some confidence. It would also make teams actually guard the team instead of just having the Beavers toss it around and do nothing so the defense doesn’t even have to play defense.

Is it like a syndrome of Beaver coaches in football and basketball to not keep doing what works for them? I swear I see it too often and it complicates things when there’s no need for it.

        • “not keep doing what works for them?”

Ditto with player combos-just when a particular fivesome starts to click, there’s a substitution. I hope this is just a preseason assessment and that it will end when Pac-10 play begins.

      • It seems like they do not have anyone to run the top in the Princeton anymore like Big Roe was able to do. Joe Burton is still too turnover prone and is not a threat to hit the three from the top like Roe could do if the defense sagged. Kevin McShane, no thank you. Angus Brandt seems like a possibility, maybe? The media does not seem to be asking either. I do not think there is a rule that athletes have to play open court at the college level is there?

        • I’m fine with going up tempo and making it an up and down game. My issue is though, when this team has to play in the half court they don’t seem to have an offense they just pass it around the perimeter a lot of times and jack up jump shots. You don’t see many cutters or movement and that’s why at times they go long periods without hitting a field goal in the halfcourt. Just wanna see some semblance of an offense in the half court.

I’m sure we will see that in the coming games as Craig I’m sure knows the half court offense needs to be a lot better. Let’s hope he makes the correct adjustments and we see that in the next few games.

          • Correct.
That’s why I’m saying go back to a Princeton style offense for the half court game. At least that looked like an offense. What they are doing now…I don’t know what it’s called. They’re sloppy. If the light ever turns on this team will be very good. I have a feeling that might happen during Pac-10 play, and this team could be peaking by the end of the year.

  5. HOLY SHIT WE BEAT TEXAS PAN AMERICAN!!! BRING ON DUKE!!!!

Wait…how did we do against Colorado again?

However, I’ll think it’s a step in the right direction if they beat Montana, as they beat UCLA on their home court.

Should be a much more interesting game than this shitfest.
