Recruiting 12/11

Rumors are flying around the internet. The first is that the Beavs have poached another tackle from UCLA. Brandin Cooks is becoming quite the recruiter. Maybe the university can hire him when his playing days are over.

The second rumor is that if the Grant foursome like Corvallis they will commit. The reason being that OSU is the school closest to their home to offer all four. They visit on January 14th so a lot can and will change, but right now recruiting is looking better than ever.

  1. I am liking this Brandin Cooks guy already..the Grant players probably want a close school where their families can make all the home games. Lets hope recruiting keeps going well and maybe that Pac-12 North championship can happen sooner than most of us think.

  2. There’s a reason the C-list guys like Harrah and Collins aren’t committing on the spot. Logic says the staff told them to look around.

  3. Where’s the room?

Aren’t there only like 5 scholarships left?

    4 Grant Kids
    Byron Moore
    Rahmel Dockery
    Torian White
    Davon Moreland

If OSU is lucky to get these guys, where’s the room?

Do people like Kellen Clute greyshirt?

    • That must have happened recently.
It’s bad news since they said they’d like to remain close to home. But, OSU still has a major depth chart advantage for all of them.

  4. No one in the Pac-10 is closing better than CAL right now…

They’ve been stealing away high profile commits/leans from Washington and Oregon as of late, thankfully. I’d rather CAL get high profile recruits than for Oregon to get more than they need. Here’s hoping Colt Lyerla chooses USC or CAL as well (Oregon doesn’t need him either).

How badass would it be if OSU pulled in McClure, Moore and Sample in this class? What a nice young secondary that would be.

  5. I feel good about getting the Grant kids I hope the visit goes well for them. If the Beavers get Moore,McClure and the Grant kids I will be really excited for the future of the program and I would question if it’s real lol

  6. As noted elsewhere, Beaver Nation may have been lucky that the Beavs missed qualifying this year for a mediocre post-season bowl game. Maybe Riley & Co. really are taking advantage of the available time to close the deal on some big-time recruits. To me, that’s much more exciting (and more beneficial for the program) than watching this year’s deeply flawed team play one last time in the Sun Bowl, the Holiday Bowl, or even the Alamo Bowl.

  7. Cal landed Todd Barr today. This their 2nd DT of the class, so maybe they don’t pursue Moala as heavily now? Cal people told me they only have 5-6 schollies left, and Avery Walls will likely commit to them tomorrow. Hopefully more guys commit so they run out of room for the Grant guys.

  8. Speaking of greyshirts…just based on offers, I’d guess these guys are candidates…

name (number of offers including ours)

    Kellen Clute (1), Na’Alii Robins(1), Jashwa James(2), Peter Ashton(3), Larry Scott(4), Brandon Bennett (5 – but we’re easily his best offer.)

Could be a couple more academic greyshirts or guys that straight up don’t get in.

I think it was the Portland Tribune the other day that said OS has 8-9 scholarships left to give, which was, I believe, just before Larry Scott and Tyler Trosin committed. So 6-7 left to give?

  9. The info that Grant kids were all offered by Cal is incorrect. Cal has only offered Moala and Sample. With the recent verbals from Todd Barr and Jason Gibson they will not be offering Lopa and Paulo. And they would not have likely offered either anyway.

I think Cal has one spot left, assuming no attrition or grey shirts. So they realistically can take five to eight more if grey shirts are created and attrition is forced.

    • And as I typed the above post, Avery Walls out of Georgia commits to Cal. That’s a DE, a LB and a DB in last couple days. It looks like Sample is likely off their board too.

      • They would still find room for Moala. We all believe these guys have to go as a group because they said they’d like to, but the reality is they might not since their careers are on the line. We saw this earlier with Dylan Wynn and Blake Renaud.

        • Wynn and Renaud aren’t the best friends Moala and Lopa are. Anderson and Ward were really tight, and they were going to go to school together regardless. But Renaud and Wynn wanted different things in life.

Cal will make room for Moala alone. With the Walls commit, I don’t think they make room for Sample… unless he comes with Moala. But even that friendship is due to just skill level in football. The tight-knit trio is Moala, Lopa and Paulo. Moala doesn’t know football without those two, and he hasn’t known life without them for the last four years. He and Lopa are like brothers, and they really play well together.

Of course, I’m just comforting myself. Moala has a spot anywhere he chooses to go. But the way Cal has closed on the three defenders and one O-lineman and RB in the last week, I get the sense Tedford wants to close out his class and just take someone like Moala (or Flavin, Lyerla, McClure, Heyward, Marquise Lee) if they eventually choose.

Right now, I’m hearing that Cal may steal SC commit Steve Dillon. I would say that Jalil and Barr make DT less of a concern for them at this point.

  10. We landed JC DE Blake Harrah. The one thing that stands out to me in his tape is his strength. If he learned some pass-rushing moves, he might turn into something special. He is enrolling in time for spring, so he will have some time to get ready.

I just hope we don’t take too much more JC guys, so we still have room for the big targets. Anyone know how many guys are greyshirting to make more space for this year’s class?

      • He’s obviously a legacy recruit. John Robinson called Riley and told him to offer the son of one of his favorite players.

I don’t see a sub-5-second 40 on that tape. I also don’t see much in the way of strength, technique, leverage or agility.

He’ll be starting by his second year, and his flailing arm tackles will garner him league honorable mention honors.

  11. Of course Blake Harrah committed…

You think he’s going to turn down his only D-1/BCS offer just because OSU has the potential to use his offer on a blue-chipper?

All this means is that OSU will have to turn away someone better because they already wasted an offer on this guy.

  12. It looks like we offered a bunch of scrubs in case the high-profile guys don’t commit… The high-profile guys aren’t committing so we’re stuck with a bunch of scrubs. A big class with a whole lot of 2-star recruits sounds like the ’06 and ’07 classes all over again. Sun Bowl here we come.

    • Just for shits and giggles, I broke down those two classes in terms of who had already committed as of Dec 14th and who committed after Dec 14th.

      2006

      Before Dec 14th
      Alex Linnenkohl 3 stars
      Casey Kjos 2 stars
      Clinton Polk 2 stars
      Danzel Issac 3 stars
      Dorian Smith 3 stars
      Howard Croom 3 stars
      James Dockery 3 stars
      Joe Halahuni 3 stars
      John Reese 3 stars
      Keaton Kristick 3 stars
      Kyle Loomis 2 stars
      Mau Nomani 3 stars
      Mitchel Hunt 2 stars
      Ryan Pohl 3 stars

      After Dec. 14th
      Brady Camp 2 stars
      Chris Johnson 0 stars
      Coye Francies 3 stars
      Devin Unga 2 stars
      Dwight Roberson 3 stars
      Gabe Miller 4 stars
      Geoff Garner 2 stars
      Gerard Lee 3 stars
      Joey La Rocque 4 stars
      Kaulin Krebs 2 stars
      Keith Robertson 2 stars
      Keo Camat 2 stars
      Kevin Unga 2 stars
      Lyle Moevao 0 stars
      Mana Lolotai 2 stars
      Shane Morales 0 stars
      Suaesi Tuimaunei 2 stars
      Timi Oshinowo 2 stars
      Tom Hansen 3 stars

Some good early commits in Halahuni, Kristick, Dockery and Linnenkohl. But we closed pretty well too getting a starting QB in Moevao as well as the only two four star players we had in that class: Joey La Rocque and Gabe Miller.

      2007

      before Dec. 14th
      Ahmed Mokhtar 3 stars
      Carl Sommer 3 stars
      Colby Prince 2 stars
      Darrell Catchings 3 stars
      Jake Gelakoska 3 stars
      Jon Ioane 3 stars
      Kevin Frahm 3 stars
      Michael Cole 2 stars
      Will Darkins 3 stars

      After Dec. 14th
      Anthony Watkins 3 stars
      Brandon Hardin 2 stars
      Cameron Collins 3 stars
      Castro Masaniai 2 stars
      Danzel Issac 2 stars
      David Ross 4 stars
      James Rodgers 2 stars
      Jesse Fifita 2 stars
      Josh LaGrone 2 stars
      Keith Pankey 3 stars
      Kevin Pankey 2 stars
      Kyle Bell 2 stars
      Lance Mitchell 3 stars
      Latu Moala 3 stars
      Leaualofa Liilii 2 stars
      Marcus Perry 2 stars
      Reggie Dunn 4 stars
      Rory Ross 2 stars
      Ryan McCants 3 stars
      Sioeli Nau 3 stars
      Taylor Henry 2 stars
      Tonu Tuimalealiifano 2 stars
      Una Smiley 2 stars

We definitely closed well in 2007, picking up the best players in the class James Rodgers, Cameron Collins and Lance Mitchell after today’s date.

There are at least a half a dozen more players coming in. I’m reserving judgement until we get them all in. But I think when all is said and done, this class will be better than either of those 2006-2007 classes.

  13. This is frustrating:

A couple of DE’s no one else seemed to want taking scholarships that could go to O-lineman. I don’t see how bringing Fernando in as an OLB is better than giving Doctor, Collins, Welch, and/or Akuna time there.

There was some potential in recruiting here this year, hope Riley isn’t losing confidence and going for the easy commitments. “We beat out Middle Tennessee and Glenville State to get this guy…”
